We really liked our dinner here! We went during happy hour, and ordered 6 of the tapas (small) plates. Every one that came was better than the one before it. The crochets were creamy and beautifully flavored. The potatoes were perfectly crispy. The mussels had a wonderful sauce. The blistered peppers were amazing. And I almost ordered more of the lamb-kebabs, they were so good. We finished off the meal with a small shared plate of the nightly special paella, and were even more impressed. We'll be coming back. We'll be bringing others. And I just noticed that the receipt has a free glass of Cava coupon for our second visit.
The food was amazing! The service was good and it didnt take long to get the foid on the table. I ordered the paella barlata, it was fresh, warm and just delicious. The environment was good. I would have liked to hear spain music though, they didnt play that. The place can be a bit expensive but it is worth it. :)
While the menu at other tapas places might be more accessible and “user friendly” to the average person, and sharables for the price of an entre at other places, the attentive staff, beautiful presentation, wonderful drinks, and flavorful dishes compensated for that small frustration. Will be returning!
Cool spot. They recommended ordering around 2 dishes per person and myself and my friend ended up ordering 5 plus dessert (whoops lol). Every dish was fantastic. We got the salmon special, quail, octopus, mushrooms, brisket, and cheesecake for dessert. Drinks were fantastic as well. Be prepared to spend a decent amount, but for being a tapas restaurant, the portions were pretty generous,
First off, the food is amazing!!! It's definitely on of my favorite dining experiences as of late. The ceviche was so fresh tasting and the seafood in the paella was so perfectly cooked. I always have to get brussel sprouts if I see it on a menu and they definitely didn't disappoint. The Churrasco steak was cooked well and paired great with the shishito peppers and fries. We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. I can't wait to come back.
This place is absolutely worth the hype! Husband and I went in for a quiet date night on a Tuesday, which happened to be half-off bottles of wine night. To start we ordered the Ahi Tuna Tartar (very generous portion, loved the presentation and so yummy!), Patatas Bravas (can't go wrong, but the aioli was phenomenal - we kept the plate and dipped everything in it), Pulpo Encebollado (so flavorful and the octopus was cooked perfectly), and the Croquetas (perfect comfort food). For the main we shared the Barlata Paella, which was good. The portion was perfect for two people to share, especially with all the other tapas we started with. Somehow we found room for dessert, and we ordered the Tarta de Chocolate and Tarta de Queso Vasco. I am usually a chocolate person, but the Tarta de Queso Vasco was phenomenal - it was more of a light, blue cheese like flavor vs sweet, but it paired well with the fresh berry compost it was topped off with and our Rioja wine. The service was quick, friendly and our server made great recommendations & was so attentive. We will definitely be back soon - and will take more advantage of the Tues wine night, their wine list was incredible.
Crazy good, took a bunch of people from work, not a bad thing was said. I visit Spain a lot and this is as close to authentic as you’re going to get in the US. Everything was outstanding. Both paella’s were a huge it, the croquetas were as close to real Spain as you can get! Highly recommended.
Can not give this mom and pop restaurant enough stars. Wheelchair accessible. Very clean. Friendly servers and the chef was amazing and came out for a photo. Included 15 pictures. The food is out of this world. Paella with jumbo shrimps is a must, meatballs were finger licking good but the best for this foodie was the blood sausages. It's a must. Thank you Barlata, you are amazingly brilliant. We thank you Chef Daniel.
Went for brunch and I have to say the food was excellent at a fair price. I had the flank steak which came with a fried egg and thin cut fries. The food came with chimichurri, some sort of herb butter, and a salsa. Great flavor combinations and after the steak and egg was done I was able to take my fork to the leftover fries, sauces, and the egg yolk and it was amazing. Strong recommend for brunch.
Had a girl night here during happy hour and it was so good! Great happy hour prices, small plates for nibbling, delicious drink menu. The lamb empanadas were amazing!! I also really enjoyed the marinated mushroom skewers and beet/arugula salad. The ambiance is nice. We sat at the long wooden bar and we were able to chat with each other or engage with others at the bar if we chose.
Our large party had a wonderful experience on a weekday for a celebratory dinner. We ordered nearly the whole menu and everything tasted delicious. The staff were so accommodating and helpful, the service they provided was outstanding.
We had a lotta amazing food at Barlata … our new place to celebrate with family! We recently had the most pleasant experience there for a promotion celebration. Our server was Ellie and she was so competent, sweet, kind, and helpful. You know that experience when your server just becomes part of your celebration and makes a special evening PERFECT … that’s Ellie! Thanks so much - we will be back again and again and again. Yum! 😋
I really enjoyed Barlata. Their menu has a large variety of option to choose from and their portions (depending on what you get) are more than other small plate/tapas style restaurants. The service was a little slow but it seemed like they were short handed. The food spoke for itself. Very authentic and fresh flavors. I thought the cocktails were a little overpriced for the little amount served but the wine list made up for that. We recently enjoyed another great experience at Barlata. This time we sat at the bar and loved talking with the bar tenders who had tons of knowledge not only about the drinks but about the food. Having great staff and great food make the experience even better.
Fun! I like sitting at their long table and trying out all the food. Everything that we ordered was great. The wine was pretty good, but their house cocktails drinks are better. I enjoyed the paellas and their chorizo plate was so good.
Came for Monday happy hour. We have to come back. There were too many good choices. The cauliflower was a great surprise. Get bread to soak up the sauce! Omg the tuna cone was so good!!!! The paella was delish. They were very nice to leave the shrimp out. Get the sangria!
My girlfriends and I went here for happy hour this last week. The food is always great and love the vibe. What really took this experience to the 5 star rating, was our server Malia. She was so friendly and absolutely accommodating. Her above and beyond customer service will definitely keep us coming back for more. Thanks for a very enjoyable evening.
One of my favorite places to go for paella! Every thing is delicious there, including their cocktail options. I suggest you try the sangria and get yourself any of the paella plates. The small is enough for one person if you are really hungry but for light eating share with a gorgeous partner. Plenty of opportunities for happy hour so be on the lookout!
Went here for Happy hour on my birthday and was not disappointed. Between four of us we ordered 14 different plates. Even though the plates are small each plate was enough for all of us to get to try and afterwards we were all full. Every plate looked and tasted amazing! The sangria was excellent as well. We we're served quickly and did not have to wait for the other plates to show up. The yellow jack crudo, calamari with garlic aioli and the chicken we're my favorites!
Visited Barlata on a Saturday evening with my wife and 10 year old daughter and had a great experience. The place was full but not over crowded. Food and wine excellent. We tried about 8 different dishes and all of them were great. Service was wonderful. We really enjoyed and will definitely visit again next time we are in Austin.
Went here for a date night and it was amazing. Garlic shrimp is the best thing we had but so many amazing tapas on the menu. Can't wait to go back and try other options. Drinks are excellent and service was perfect. Please go here!
I come here once a week and it’s one of my favorite places to eat in Austin. They do happy hour until 7:00pm on weekdays, and I love the tapas style courses. The service, food and atmosphere are all fantastic! Also brunch here on Sundays is amazing too!
I have been wanting to come here for a while now. We went on a Monday which turned out to be happy hour all evening, so that was a nice surprise. Our server Joseph took excellent care of us and we had a fantastic time. I had been craving paella for a few weeks and after looking at some places in Austin this seemed like the place to go. I will definitely be going back!
Oh my gosh. The food was fantastic and the service was great. I went for a solo, self care date night and my waiter was fantastic. He helped me pick out great food and suggested drinks as well. Be prepared to sit "community/family" style in the bar area, but it felt so welcoming. The decor was beautiful and it was overall just a fantastic experience. I even told my Dad I needed to bring him when he came to visit!
It's a great place to have tapas. The food was really good and the service was nice. They have some traditional cuisine of Spain mixed with American cuisine. You will want to make a reservation ahead of time!! The atmosphere is relaxed and great for doing that first date. It's a place that is good for adults overall. Children could come there but the atmosphere is very adult oriented.
Started out slightly frustrating just because it was a busy night and we'd been waiting an hour for food to start coming. Tables sat after us were being brought their dishes and finally said something to one of the wait staff, trying to be polite but starving and a little hangry. They immediately apologized, and brought some bread, the manager sat next to us and apologized saying they were backed up, and gave us a calamari dish. The food was great, and it started coming out steadily after that. I really appreciate the kindness and quick response. I didn't want to be that person, I understand they were busy, and I really hope I came across as polite. They were all very nice and took great care of us, leaving a great impression. Definitely a nice spot for dinner and drinks. Thank you for a nice anniversary dinner.
Increíble tarde comiendo con mi familia en este restaurante español en Austin, Texas. Excelentes tapas y Paella Barceloneta. Súper servicio. Awsome services. Super deliciuos tapas and Paelle.
Tapas rock!
Barlata is one of the most under-rated restaurants in Austin. They are a fantastic option for groups as everything is small plates/shareable and the entire menu is at such a great price point. Every time we get the check I am shocked at how much food we got for such an affordable bill. The paella is a must!
Went there to celebrate a family birthday recently. We were happy to find we arrived in time to enjoy happy hour prices. Very nice menu, lots of interesting variety. We had Spanish Olives, Ahi Tuna Tartar, Brussel Sprouts, Baked Cauliflower, Pork Ribs and a Seafood Paella. Everything was tasty and served fresh. Service was great and it was an good choice for our celebration.
Definitely a unique experience and worth a try. Went with friends to try it out. We had reservations as recommended and were seated upon arrival. Our server was awesome, she took the time to explain the entire process to us as this was our first time here. We ordered and the food started coming out very quickly. Food was well prepared and was mostly very tasty. the Wagyu meat balls were GREAT, our favorite. The worse were the mussels as many were crunchy with what I assume is sand? the other negative was it was quite dark in the restaurant, to the point I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see the menu. At first I thought my eyes were just bad then I looked around and saw several others doing the same thing. When we were finished, the lights were finally turned up! Even though it was on the expensive side, it was worth a visit to experience this style of dining.
My husband and I went for dinner and were looking forward to it as we have always wanted to try it out. We didn't have reservations so we had the option of sitting in the bar or waiting out 1 hour so we decided to sit at the bar which wasn't too bad. We ordered a couple of things between us: 1. Fried Calamari- this was good and you get the freshness of the seafood 2. Paella seafood- the taste was a little off and we were wondering if it's coming from the pan. I love paella especially what my husband makes so I think I am probably very picky when it comes to paella so this dish was definitely not my favorite. 3. Grilled Moroccan Lamb - this was truly amazing. This was the best for me. I'll go back just to eat this again. Service was pretty okay considering how busy they were. They were still attentive. The atmosphere itself was nice and while it was a little noisy, we were still able to have a conversation.
Love this place! I go for the patatas bravas but always like trying new things. My faves from today were the croquetas and ceviche, droool. Oh and the Catalan toast dipped in the leftover sauce from the potatoes was so good, haha. Okay, one mooore, the costillas (sweet and sour pork ribs) were pretty bomb and I'm not even that big on meat. I'm doing sober August but can't wait to go back to try some of their new cocktails. Pear Mojito sounds amaze.
Food is excellent and the most authentic we had in the US. It is in our opinion overpriced. Close to $400 for a group of 5 (only alcohol was a sangria and 2 beers). Will return for the wonderful dishes.
A good lineup of Spanish wines. All the tapas I tasted were very good. The octopus (my personal benchmark for a good kitchen) was cooked to perfection. Service was great and a nice overall atmosphere. Looking forward to continuing my exploration of the wine list and the tapas menu.
The first time I went here, I was blown away. The second time, not quite a impressed, but still enjoyed my food and drinks. I will say both times I ordered the empanadas and was not disappointed. I tried two paellas and was also very pleased. The food seems a little inconsistent which is a little bit of a let down, but it is never bad. The restaurant has a nice feel. The prices are pretty reasonable for the quality and uniqueness. This place is definitely worth a shot.
The food was AMAZING! Servers were very friendly and attentive. Super expensive though; we assumed portions would be a little bit bigger with the prices especially the paella. It was worth it on NYE with friends but it'll only be a "special occassions" destination for us.
Atmosphere and food is incredible here, a cozy (and kinda dark lit, if that annoys you) tapas bar that is great for large parties who want to share for a special event because the biggest downside to this place is it is PRICEY. It's downtown so that's not a huge surprise. Recommendation: don't eat the fire roasted peppers unless you have a crazy high spice tolerance because I almost died (they still tasted good though...). The grilled mushrooms and pretty much every single meat dish rock. Enjoy!
Excellent decor and upbeat atmosphere. Mixed results on the food. I had an excellent cheese plate and Moroccan lamb..not so good on the chimichurri beef. A little pricey but unique..great service and Happy hour
Esta bastante bien. Comimos unos arroces muy ricos.
Buena comida española.
This place has gone a bit downhill for me since it first opened... The wait staff is a bit off and kind of rude at times. The food was not bad. Cheese board was good, beware paella takes 20-30 min and it’s ok but that being said even in Spain the only place that has great paella is Valencia where it’s from.., the octopus was good and romanesco seafood tapa. The garlic bread with tomato on it was toasted on ciabatta but cold and kind of mushy.
Barlata is a little pricey for a tapas destination but I do not regret the visit. Finally had paella since we were not able to on our Spain vacation. I do plan on trying at least one more of Barlata's versions. The Pulpo 'a la Plancha' was probably my least favorite of what we tried, it was creative but didn't do enough for me on the flavor side. This was not the case for the Red Wine Braised Oxtail, which I will probably order again on a return visit. The Spanish Charcuterie Plate has me wishing I could find such fine meat in at a local Austin butcher. (NO dice so far!) My surprise favorite of the evening was the glass of Clara which came to our discovery when we visited Spain and came to be our drink whenever we dined there. Thanks Barlata!
I can give it a 5 on the ambience and environment and service as well but the quality of the food needs a little more work. I would describe the food as average. This is definitely not a traditional Tapas place if you are expecting it to be. It is more of a hybrid or fusion tapas place with a Texas twist. The portion sizes are small obviously, so make sure to order multiple ones. The drinks are good as the service is really good. Weekdays aren't busy but for weekends I would suggest reserving in advance. I used OpenTable. The kobe was a little different than what I was expecting so I'm not sure how to describe it. The salmon was great though, it's a must try. Wine is half price on Tuesdays and parking is available on site. Parking is limited to 3 hrs though.
We came here for Valentine’s Day and it was packed. We were seated at a small dark table outside on the patio and, given that it was chilly out, we requested to move to a table by a heater which they accommodated. We ordered drinks and then waited an hour before they were brought to the table. At this time we also ordered food. They had a set Valentines menu which included 4 dishes & 4 wine pairings for $75 which we thought was a great deal. My girlfriend decided to do that and because many of the items included dairy (which I can’t have) I decided to pick several tapas plates off the main menu. The Valentine’s Day menu included charcuterie, a seafood plate (scallops, prawns, clams), steak & shrimp and then dessert. I had the Shishito peppers, ahi tuna tartar, octopus, mussels, duck and paella Barceloneta. Unlike the drinks, the food came quickly and basically all at once. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend the Spanish octopus, the tuna tartar and the mussels. We had ordered quite a lot for two people and spent some time getting through each dish. I finished my cocktail and my girlfriend finished her two glasses of wine but the server was nowhere to be seen. Another 30 minutes passed before we were able to order more drinks. At this point we had finished all the food and the diligent bussers had removed all plates. As it got colder we sat outside on the patio waiting for drinks and dessert. We waited another 30 minutes before one glass of wine for me and four (?) glasses of wine arrived for my girlfriend. We finally decided to come inside to warm up. The dessert had still not arrived at this point and we had been at dinner for over two hours. Finally it came and we finished dessert before settling up the $200 bill and leaving as soon as possible. While the food was fantastic the service was exceptionally bad and therefore I would not recommend this restaurant. I understand that this was a very busy day but the service was so bad that we contemplated leaving mid-meal several times. The three stars are 100% for the food.
3.5 stars I came during happy hour so the prices were better, especially for me who was trying multiple dishes. The croquettes and the lamb empanadas were really tasty and flavorful as well as the steak. I really did not like the paella, it was definitely undercooked. Some of the grains of rice was rock hard and there was zero crust that you would expect from a paella. Also the sangria was too sweet and after I let the ice melt, it became too watery. The server did ask me if I wanted to exchange it for something else which was nice but by the time she noticed I hadn’t drank it, I was already getting up to leave.
we went there on Oct 8 after 6 PM. waiters were good and nice. food on the hand was not so great. Forget the Paellas and Gambas Al Ajillo. Ceviche was the highlight. I think most places you're safe with cheese plate and that's how it was at Barlata. they should offer dark beer. Sangria was ok. There wasn't anything that I would go back there again. we spent over $460
The happy hour prices are really good but the food wasn't as good as I was hoping for. Especially if you come outside of happy hour and are paying full price, I'm not sure the prices are justified. It is a really good location and we enjoyed the outdoor patio. We had the cheese plate, lamb empanadas, fried potatoes and paella. My favorite was the lamb. The paella was good but the happy hour portion was really small. The cheese was good and we got to try something new but the potatoes were just okay in my opinion. I'm not sure we'd go back unless I was with someone who really wanted to try it.
There were some gems of dishes here, but also a few ho hum, and it feels like they've packed in 5-10 tables more than there should be. We came the weekend after Valentine's day (2/16), so maybe they had increased the table count for the additional traffic, but it made the ambiance hectic and distracting, and a bit like a cruise ship with how close we were to the table next to us. The black paella was legitimately delicious, but other dishes we ordered just weren't that special. The service felt stressed and forced too, unfortunately.
I have never been treated so rudely. I ordered an ice tea and my husband ordered a drink from the bar. The waiter brought both drinks at the same time and excused himself while we finished looking at the menu. My tea had turned and it was really soured. I asked my husband to taste it to make sure that it wasn't my taste buds. He quickly agreed and I informed the waiter that the tea was soured and asked for a replacement. He asked me if I wanted something else and I said that a new tea would be fine. Not only did he NOT start a fresh pot he just left me sitting there throughout dinner with nothing. No manager came to apologize nor did anyone bring me a fresh pot.
I was there for 1/2 bottles of wine on Tuesday and though our waitress seemed to have forgotten we kindly remind her after getting the bill. The food was ok, I expected the paella to be more flavorful, it was kinda boring even though we orders a seafood one with mixed seafood. The small plates were some good some ok.
Food was decent and not memorable at all but you can enjoy the place. The service was very good - super nice and attentive. The drinks were good as well. :-) The paella I had was just ok. It wasn't hot as we're the ribs tapas direct from the oven. The tapas 1) ribs canoli - don't order them too much sauce and just didn't make sense 2) lamb skewers were rubbery and a bit spicy for me 3) croquettes we're good. We sat outside which was nice and the place seemed clean inside.
The ambient it is nice and the food taste very good even dough they served in small portions. Spanish restaurant where nobody speak spanish even when they look like they do know the language ... weird complex that I notice on Texas.
Some great food options, but prices are way too high for the type & amount of food your getting. Service was good 2/4 times visited. Drinks: If you want to pay $14 for a cocktail that amounts to 3 shots of liquid & taste "alright" by all means give them your money, but the thought of this is insane. Dessert: They ran out of sauce that makes a dessert & when I got it they said "we ran out of the sauce to top it." So why serve it when it tastes like dried up sponge cake with a small pile of blueberries? Tried Barlata for the 4th time & this place has pushed me over the edge to no longer support Austin's overpriced tiny plate foodie trend.
Menu is vague and food was disappointing, bland and overpriced. I usually don’t complain about quantity because I rather eat less but tasty food, here they have the smallest dishes you could ever find, I would rather call that “sample dishes”. Also I was surprised to see they have so many paella dishes that doesn’t taste like paella at all. Am glad I just tried the happy hour “sample version”. The barman was really nice and made the evening enjoyable. Their best food was their complementary baguette with their olive oil.
I was meeting a friend from out of town here for Oysters, Champagne, and dinner. The Oysters were so old. and the food was not very good. We did go to the restaurant late maybe 2 hours before closing so not sure it was because of that. The waiter were so patient with us and we stayed maybe 20 mins extra past closing with out realizing since we were catching up. No one rushed us and they made sure they acknowledged us while leaving. I normally don't complain to the waiter when I order anything because I do not believe in wasting food. I still ate it.
No way man. To preface - I'm already not a huge fan of tapas, but even so I'm kinda shocked by the size-to-price ratio. Shocked in comparison to Spain's tapas. Shocked in comparison to NYC's Cafe Mono tapas. We came by during happy hour. Their happy hour paella is $9... for the tiniest portion, you've ever seen. Like, maybe three spoonfuls worth of rice. You can grab a bread plate, but it's like a few slices. Everyone around us was paying $50 for just a little bit of food. Everything looked tasty enough, just not at all worth the cost. I don't feel like our city needs this kind of place. No disrespect to the owners, I'm sure they're great people, but nobody except folks making at least 150% of Austin's median family income could enjoy a dinner-date here.
Las gambas al ajillo no lo son, son otra cosa, la carne muy dura, el pulpo muy duro pero el arroz negro estaba muy bueno
Was really excited to try this place. We ordered several dishes and there was hair in one dish, the seafood paella was greasy and the octopus salad was not fresh. Our server was unapologetic about this and walked away from us while we were in the middle of ordering food. We did the thing that I almost NEVER do: we asked to talk to a manager who was also unapologetic and said our server was one of the best there. She didn’t ask us if there was anything she could do- just said she’d send a complimentary dessert over. I will NOT be going back.
Slowest service ever. Ordered 4 dishes, got 2 after about 30 minutes and then waited another 45 minutes for the 3rd. Finally just told them to cancel the last one and got the check. The duck was dry, the steak tartare was drenched in spicy dressing and you couldn't even taste the flavor of the beef. Not sure what the paella tasted like - I would have probably been there for another hour waiting for it. I've been here a few times before but will never go back.
Big disappointment… I am huge fun of Spanish food and traveled to Barcelona at least 15 times. I was so excited that we have Spanish restaurant in Austin. Out of 5 meals 2 were acceptable quality. Wagu meatballs were without wagu; garlic shrimps were so overpowered with garlic and salt, stake was not soft at all… the service was good the atmosphere is nice but this was not a good quality Spanish food
I had originally set a reservation here a month ago for my brother's doctoral graduation. The day of the dinner, the manager changed the reservation to be outside on the patio even though I set it to originally be inside. Which was fine, things change. Turns out the patio was actually the side walk. She called me a few hours before to let me know which helped. Said that heaters would be placed outside. We arrived to the location and the heaters were not working. The table was right next to the entrance. Two of the chairs were actually broken. One of my family members is handicapped and fell in the chair. Out of frustration placed the chair aside to which the manager yelled at my party that she would appreciate not to have her chairs thrown. We later tried to remedy the situation but she was not empathetic or apologetic for yelling at our small party. She absolutely ruined my brother's graduation dinner. The only redeeming quality was the wait staff and the food. The manager made this place feel confrontational, unwelcoming and frankly racist. We will never be returning here again.
