A wonderful slice of locality in Santa Catalina Island. If you are looking for 5 star atmosphere you are in the wrong place if you’re looking for five star food and service this is where you need to be. Ricardo was the best, wonderful personality and recommendations; almost like a part of the family. The restaurant was busy and the food took a while to come out but he warned us to have patience and our patience was rewarded. The food was excellent, Chile rellenos outstanding, carnitas excellent in every form. The restaurant was obviously understaffed but they really worked hard to make this a memorable occasion for my family.
Very tasty burgers and chicken sandwiches, great fries and onion rings. In the middle of nowhere. If you are visiting Pebbly Beach, it is an excellent place to eat. We went three times on our last Catalina vacation.
I am usually very self conscious in a new restaurant due to my being a vegan goofball... I usually tend to simply go for a quick easy app as to not ask for too much manipulation of the menu items. But my co worker asked the gentleman serving us what kind of veggie/vegan foods they have on my behalf which made me blush. He perked up and went through the ingredients in his mind and offered such a beautiful idea and solution for a meal. I was TRULY grateful for their kindness and that FANTASTIC Fajitas burrito! Gahh... Covered in green sauce and avocado on top... Mmm... With SOOOOO much like! Tremendous adoration for this place! 💛
Awesome local spot in Avalon. Give them a call and they will come pick you up. Very eclectic menu. On their website they describe themselves as a Mexican food restaurant but here in Google maps for some reason it's called a pizza place and it's because they have just about everything so it's a good crowd pleaser. Very friendly staff outdoor patio and you can watch the helicopters take off and land
Loved the food and the dark, true pub vibe. We had a great seat to watch the helicopters come and go, and that added to the ambiance. The food was some of the best on the island. You can't go wrong!!
Highly recommended. We had dinner on the outside patio. The ceviche is delicious, along with the mahi mahi tacos and the medium rare New York steak. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about menu items. The service is great. Definitely will return.
While there were a couple issues with my first experience at Buffalo Nickel, I happily give them 5 stars for excellent customer service and in the end, good food and good value for the money. Buffalo Nickel offers a large variety of items: from hamburgers and chicken wings, to more substantial fare like seafood and fish, various Mexican entrees, barbecue to pizza. Normally I'd be leery of a menu like this, but their barbeque (while a bit too sweet for my taste) is very good (pork ribs in particular), and the salmon fillet is excellent. They serve dinner with a choice of soup or salad..and personally I recommend the salad - a very nice quality salad for a side dish, with olives, cucumber and tomato. They have very good appetizers, and among them, I would recommend their garlic bread. Pricing is fair and a good value when considering the overall quality of the food as well as generous portions. Buffalo Nickel is the one restaurant that will deliver on the island, which is convenient in these times.
Fantastic food at reasonable prices for a tourist town. Great service as well. I had ordered a delivery order which was prepared incorrectly. When I called the lady was prompt and polite in immediately offering a replacement at no extra charge. I can't recommend this place enough.
BEST PLACE IN AVALON! The service is friendly and amazing. Always so helpful with the biggest smiles! The food is delicious! The portions are generous and the food always comes out hot! The drinks are super yummy as well, they know how to make a great margarita! The location is out of the busy area, you are next to the ocean and the pretty hills. It is family/locally owned and the vibes are awesome!
I had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant on my first visit to Catalina Island. It serves generous portions of Mexican food for reasonable prices. My burrito was tasty and filling. The shrimp cerviche my friend ordered earned high marks and smelled fresh as a garden in the Mediterranean. Cozy and intimate, the staff's laid-back attentiveness complemented the relaxed atmosphere of the island.
First, The food was delicious. I had the ribs and my wife had the fajitas. The atmosphere was so great that people didnt want to leave which made our wait too long but it was worth the wait. From having a driver pick us up and drop us back off in Avalon to the waiter and servers, their service was superb. Highly recommended if in Avalon (Catalina island)
First time here it was amazing. The host was very helpful and friendly.
This place is extremely delicious amazing staff and atmosphere was top shelf I’m totally going to mention it to others thank you buffalo nickel for making me like family
Amazing wings and nachos. Giant aperol spritzes too. And if you sit on the patio, a good view of the helicopter going in and out to make Arnold Schwarzenegger jokes. Something something GET TO DE CHOPPA!
Stopped in for a little appetizer and cocktail before sightseeing the rest of the island. Best decision we made. Appetizers are entree size and cocktails are very delicious. Would definitely recommend. Btw, you have to try their fresh chips and salsa.
Always excellent food! We have loved everything we have ever ordered. The staff are so friendly and accommodating, even of a large party with many children! The beautiful courtyard and occasional helicopter landing makes Buffalo Nickel even more of a gem. It's a must stop on your visit to Avalon.
Buffalo Nickel seems to be the local go to for the island. With friendly service and reasonable prices we were happy with our experience. The food was great. Nothing over the top, but generous portions and hits the spot after a long day exploring the island. Call them to get a courtesy shuttle to the main plaza if you’re staying in Avalon.
So if your in Avalon make sure to take the time to visit the Buffalo Nickel. I learned along time ago to ask the locals for restaurant advice and had rented the electric bikes and the suggested The buffalo Nickel. They have a shuttle from town and it's so worth it Excellent Food, great service, A must go to when on Catalina Island. LOVED it. Laid-back atmosphere. Highly recommend
We walked a short distance from town to the restaurant even though you could have call for a pickup from town. This place had been recommended to us by a local and it was definitely worth the walk. Here you will find a delicious ceviche (fish, shrimp, octopus) anywhere on the island. Add the spicy mango but skip the spicy cucumber. The restaurant was busy and offers indoor/patio seating. A+ service from Ricardo.
I was looking for somewhere in Avalon off of the beaten path and away from the crowds to enjoy a cold beverage. Buffalo Nickel fit the bill and Pedro, who was operating the place was great. Next time I'm in Avalon I'll definitely come back. I didn't eat anything but the menu was enticing. There's a nice patio and cozy restaurant.
Holy moly what a delicious meal! Probably the best baby back ribs I have ever had. Totally worth the 5 minute late-model minivan (with cracked windshield and semi-functional seatbelts) free shuttle ride to get there. That was the only weird part about it. Seriously, the food was outstanding. It was the opposite of a tourist trap. It was reasonably priced, the portions were ginormous and the food was SO GOOD. My big ol meat plate was mouth-watering and my vegetarian wife said her chile rellenos were the best of her life (and she grew up in New Mexico). We found this place on a tip from the kayak rental people in town. They said this was the locals' favorite place to eat, and I can see why! (I didn't even get to describing the cocktails, which were also awesome.)
Probably one of the best hidden spots on Catalina. It's a bit of a way from the town, but it's worth the extra 5-10 minute drive by golf cart. It's next to the gas station, so you can stop by while filling up. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The food was 50/50. I thought my half our party thought our places were delicious, the other hald thought they were okay. No bad complaints though.
OMG the portions are huge service was really good especially since we had 10 in our party. Everyone said the food was great. I had chili rellenos and it was spicy but not too spicy. Probably the best I've had. The wife's blackened salmon was cooked perfectly she loved it. And the margaritas we're awesome!
A great place for lunch, but the service was excellent. Their own dedicated shuttle service was speedy, and lunch service was attentive and very nice and humorous. Chicken nachos were plentiful, and fish taco special was EXCELLENT!
A hidden gem. For those that fly via iex helicopters, this place is awesome. Free shuttle to Avalon. So drink, eat, be merry! Just know that pretty aggressive bees and wasps will want your food during the summer months outside. They don't sting. But they annoy. July to September. Eat inside. Other months, outside.
If you visit Catalina Island, this spot is a got to do and visit. Excellent awesome delicious scrumptious food. Very very delicious. Highly recommended by all the locals all the natives you will not be disappointed. We enjoyed every bite and customer service is awesome.!!! :-)
we loved the food. my husband loved the ceviche and also the margaritas. Ricardo serves us and make us feel very good.we saw the helicopters near us and also we had a ride back to the city with a friendly driver don Pedro. highly recommend
Great food, great service. I had a chef’s salad it was loaded with goodies on top. A filling meal for sure. My husband and son split the sampler and fries. Quesadilla, wings, taquitos, nachos. They were great. Best service on the island.
Visited Catalina for the first time in 20 years and this is still one of the best places in Catalina. Server was great, salsa was excellent and the kids love the helicopters coming and going just like I did when I was a kid! They have some space for the kids to run around and food was great for the price. They have a shuttle but evening was a great time to walk it. It’s about a mile from Avalon and took us about 20 minutes to slowly walk with two kids.
A local that we met on the ferry recommended this place. Good food and friendly service. We called for a ride there and they picked us up quickly.
Before laying out on Pebbly Beach the beach we went over to The Buffalo Nickel to order their famous Buffalo Milk. The Buffalo Nickel is a Family Mexican restaurant and located right next to a Helicopter Landing Pad. Inside Buffalo Nickel, I noticed the cleanliness of the restaurant. The bathrooms were spotless and the service fast. All the customers are seated in the patio, socially distanced from each other. The Buffalo Milk is amazing. We ordered one to go and drank it on Pebbly Beach as we watched the helicopters fly over our heads and listened to reggae. It is an alcohol beverage made with Vodka, half and half and banana liqueur with sweet hints of nutmeg and chocolate. It reminded us of a White Russian. It is served in a huge plastic cup with swirls of chocolate sauce and whipped cream. It had to have been about 16 oz. I was happy we shared just one.
Hands down the best fish tacos I’ve had in a looong time - and I live on the coast in a beach town. I asked what kind of fish and they said it was cod!? Had no idea cod could taste that good, I would’ve guessed it was locally caught perch or maybe sheepshead. Really excellent. We also ordered chicken nachos which were good but could’ve used more guac and sour cream. The service was great, everyone was very friendly and attentive. Easy pick up option from town so we could get here to try it out. We will definitely be back next time we visit the island! Wish I took photos of the fish tacos!
Hands down best food and service in catalina island, called the restaurant and was told to wait for the shuttle by the island conservatory. The van arrived really quick, got to the restaurant a bit hesitant but boy did they prove me wrong. Never judge a book by its cover the food was amazing we had ceviche as an appetizer wow 👏 🤤💯 I also had camarones a la diabla supper tasty really well prepared and served. My wife had chiles rellenos she loved them. Trust me we I say when ever I come back to the island I'm going straight into Buffalo Nickel. The service they provide is amazing 10stars they go out their way to make your night unforgettable.
Almost every time we visit Catalina Island we go to the Buffalo Nickel. If you've been to Catalina, you already know everything is a little pricey, and Buffalo Nickel is no exception, but it's totally worth it, I have never been disappointed with the food, service or atmosphere! If you are in Avalon with no transportation, give them a call and they will give you a ride. Last time we visited, they were closed due to a kitchen fire. That was a disappointment, and there was a rumor that it would not re open. We were thrilled to find out they are back in business! I know years ago they had a pasta bar dinner special one day a week. That was a great deal on a great meal, if they still have it, I recommend it! If not, there should be something on the menu you'd like.
Omg!!! If I hadn’t taken the helicopter ride, I don’t think I would’ve come here.. it is a little far from the “happening” part of the island. But to everyone who is visiting the island, this is a must visit restaurant!!!! Food is amazingggg!! Really great for brunch! The service was really good. Definitely do try the buffalo milk drink, you only get it in the island... and this is where you should get it! They have birthday specials so which is another plus!
Great food, great service, allowed my girl and I to split the bill. Had the Catalina plate with the Steak, cheese enchilada, rice and beans. The food was so mouth watering and delicious. My other had a salmon and loved it. IF YOU COME TO CATALINA GO HERE! The server was so polite, we came just before the closing hour and left around dark. We were offered a courtesy ride back to Avalon, but we decline it because we had brought our bikes. So polite that they would offer.
When you get there, first thing you need to do is order salsa and guacamole. Salsa was one of the freshest I’ve ever had! The guacamole had chunky avocados and fresh onions. Everything we had was delicious and the cocktails were on point. To top it all off, we had impeccable service from a loving family. It was a great stop from our cruise.
A must visit when in Avalon! Buffalo Milk was delicious, so we're the chicken fajitas and mahi mahi...
The food is great. A nice mixture of Mexican, pizza, fish tacos and burgers all good. Their specialty Buffalo milk drink is a personal favorite. They offer rides to town and back just ask the staff.
The front desk manager at our hotel recommended this restaurant, and man I'm glad we listened. One of the best burritos I've ever had, and my wife loved her fish tacos. This is going to be our go to spot every time we come to Catalina going forward
Loved the continent shuttle from the port to their location and very friendly customer service. Not to mention great food!!
We stopped in on our last night in Catalina. Wished we had come here sooner. Orders potato skins and chicken fajitas. Both items were huge and probably could feed 3 people each. Could not take home leftovers since we were leaving the next morning. Please stop in and sit in the patio! Great food!
BEST restaurant on the island. Out by Pebbly Beach away from all the tourists. Come here for excellent and huge portions of food. If your waiter is Rafael, he is incredible!
Someone highly recommended this spot. The ceviche was delicious. Fish tacos we juicy and flavorful. Atmosphere was cozy and inviting.
Best ceviche in a long time. Generous portion, perfectly seasoned with appropriate ratio of fish to Avocado to onion. We had the red snapper ceviche. Served with crispy seasoned homemade tortilla chips. The prickly pear margarita with salt was also generous. To top it off they have a driving service to take you back to the main part of the island. Although the walk to get there is gorgeous. 10/10 recommend must eat here if you come to the island Our server and everyone around is super friendly! Great place
This place is well deserving of its five stars. Food is fantastic, the western style saloon atmosphere is enjoyable, and the staff are not only helpful but friendly. Definitely a must visit if you are on the island. If I was to come back again, I would eat here twice instead of some of the other places I ate. Oh, and the prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food you get.
A full American dinner with Mexican influence. It's the only spot on the Pebbly Beach side of the island but thankfully it's a good one. You'll find something you'll like for sure.
Perfect day on the island. BN was recommended by the bike rental lady. Fantastic ceviche. Mexican shrimp cocktail with octopus is amazing. Good beer selection. Free shuttle back to the ferry, too!
First stop, Buffalo Nickel. Family owned dinner spot with a nice down home feel. Waiters were very nice and helpful. Food was really good. Simple food done well.
ETA: A tour guide reported that they have a shuttle that will pick you up in Avalon for free! We loved our walk, but for those who can’t do it, just call them! A 30 minute walk from Avalon is so worth it. The ceviche is magical and the service was excellent. We even got to watch a helicopter take off. Seriously, though, GET THE CEVICHE. The potato tacos were also very tasty!
Buffalo Nickel was so yummy! The shrimp ceviche was delicious and the portion was so big! The fish tacos were delicious. They even have a shuttle that can take you and bring you back so you don’t even have to walk!
We had such a great experience at Buffalo Nickel on Catalina Island! The atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, and our server, Ricardo, was fantastic - friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. I ordered the Mexican pizza, and it was absolutely delicious… fresh, flavorful, and perfectly satisfying. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area, and ask for Ricardo, he’ll take great care of you!
Buffalo nickel is out at Pebbly beach and offers a free shuttle…great food, full bar, cozy atmosphere.
My visit to Buffalo Nickel was fantastic. The place has great views, making it perfect for a relaxing meal. The selection of food and drink was impressive, and they even offer a free shuttle to pick you up. We tried the ceviche, which was amazing, and the tacos were delicious too. The atmosphere and service were excellent. Highly recommend checking it out!
We stopped here during a day trip to Catalina. I could not say nicer things about the staff or the food. The ceviche was fantastic, and the fish tacos and carnitas burrito were also very tasty. Portions were large and the entire staff was very attentive.
A LOCAL FAVORITE! Try the ceviche! They were so kind and accommodating. This is a perfect, off the beaten path location. They will come grab you from town if you don’t have a ride. Easy golf cart access - took no more than 5 minutes to get there and lots of space for all.
A must try! If you’re visiting Catalina Island do not miss out on this hidden gem. It is a-bit away but good news is if you give them a call they will send someone out to pick you up and drop you off as well. I know a lot of locals love to come eat here that’s how I found out about it by a friend who lives there and now every time I visit it’s a must to come eat here. The ceviche with everything on it change my life they call it el veneno no lie it’s my favorite ceviche here in California I rate it #1 reminds me of Mexico no lie. It has shrimp, octopus, fish, cucumbers, mango and the salsa they use wow! Buffalo Nickel I will forever be a customer.
The best food experience I had on my trip the white sea bass ceviche best I ever had in my life the staff was super awesome I can't wait to go back
We enjoyed the service and food. Ricardo recommended the soft shell Alaskan cod fish tacos. I’m happy I went with his suggestion, they were delicious. Always a great time and experience at Buffalo Nickel.

I got the half rack of ribs and my wife got the sampler platter. Absolutely delicious, and great service! Plenty of food, did not walk away hungry. Don't let the fact that it's away from the shops for you, it's worth the walk, and they have a free shuttle if that's too hard.

This place is not in town but it's really cool. Price is best in Avalon. Had a buffalo burger and it's real good. 4 of us went and all the food was good. Will be our new secret place. They have a free shuttle. Just went back Out 22nd. Still fun place to go!!!
Good food, good service. Very pleasant outdoor patio. They have a complementary shuttle van that will pick you up and drop you off at or near the tender port.
Get away from Avalon's hustle and bustle - this is a true original! Delicious food, it's as close to homemade as a person can get in a restaurant. One dish we had was the chiles rellenos and the sauce was so good it made average cheese taste gourmet 😋. Good portion size too. Staff is friendly, we enjoyed the patio.
Buffalo mill drink was great! My sandwich was only ok but everyone else in my party loved theirs. Staff was all super friendly and accommodating. I'd definitely come back here, especially for that Buffalo milk drink. Nice atmosphere as well.
One of the big plus is that they offer pick up since their restaurant is so far away! Trust! It's worth the drive. I ordered the chicken fried steak sandwich and that was huge! It was delicious and super flavorful. They put plenty of each ingredient. The sandwich was over flowing. Every bite had avocado lettuce and chicken. I also ordered the free meal for my birthday and it was not a disappointment. The Buffalo hamburger was juicy. I will definitely be coming back! The beer is a little overpriced but this is an island so somewhat understandable.
The nachos were impeccable and their burgers satisfied me fully. It is perfect for those who don't like the crowds of Avalon as it is a whiles away from the town. The walk out there is nice and the atmosphere really sets the place apart. Highly recommend this place.
Locals place just outside of Avalon. The ribs were fantastic.
Food was very good. I ordered a whole fried tilapia fish and a michalada which was very good!!!! Service was great from our server however the eldest server there was rude. I would definitely return however if your on the island for just a few hours I recommend to go the the main part of the island to eat instead because this really took up more than half of our time on the island.
We biked here from Avalon to have lunch during our stay in Catalina. If you are arriving by the helicopter, the restaurant is located right next to the helipad. The portions here were very generous, so our quesadillas and Ceviche were more than enough for two with leftovers to go. The prices were very reasonable too, given it was located outside of Avalon downtown. So why not the 5-stars? Well, the service was extremely slow. And the servers all seemed to be slightly tunnel vision and not able to multi task. It could also be that we were there right after a large group has cleared out, so the server chose to spend time cleaning the table versus giving us the menu. Lastly, the quesadillas were on the greasy side. I would recommend budget extra time when dining here.
Great food and nice service! We had a burrito, nachos and buffalo milk and they were all really good. It was pretty busy. They do not provide free tap water only water bottles. They have a free shuttle you can call that will pick you up and drop you off, there just might be a bit of a wait for it. I would definitely come back here!

Every time I've been here the food has been wonderful! But the service is awful. Trying to get a ride up there they just don't answer the phone or it is just a busy signal. We waited an hour to be seated. Wait for our food for a very long time. One appetiser came at the end of our meal! The only reason we stayed because it cost us about 30 bucks in taxi service to get there. It won't be my first choice in great places to eat at anymore. This is the second time this has happened to my family there.
Visited twice. Second time for dinner. Even though it was not dinner time they kindly served us. Thanks for that. We ordered steak medium well and pork ribs no sauce. The ribs came with sauce, the steak was overlooked, and it wasn't hot like freshly cooked one, it was warm... And rice was not good.
Definitely a hidden away from it all, has potential space for improvement, especially the outdoor area. Came across this place from our Hotel shuttle driver. Not ever seen the Island before, Well I didn’t expect this spot to be so far away from it all, no view to anything. We told our shuttle driver that we wanted Ceviche, and fish. To my surprise my ceviche came with no tostadas nor tortillas chips. We had to order Chips and salsa to use those chips. My Ceviche wasn’t what I had expected nor craved. But it wasn’t terrible. My husband wanted fish & chips and it just wasn’t what expected. The atmosphere wasn’t what I hoped for. This spot wasn’t for me. It also appears that the locals enjoy and like gathering here.
Small intimate, quiet place you have to shuttle in to visit. I ordered the Mexican pizza with chile verde and carnitas and one tostada de ceviche. Both food items were good and on point. The drinks on the other hand were both of poor quality, did not drink either and got charged $25 for two drinks we did not consume. The Buffalo milk tasted like a lot of cheap vodka with little to no flavor so the colada tasted like it had no alcohol in it. So we didn't drink them. Didn't even bother taking a pic for the train we didn't like the drinks.

Had to call the shuttle 3 times. Dude on the phone was like I'll send him now 3x!! What about the 1st 2 times you told me they were on their way? Our reservation was at 7 and I called at 620, 640, and 7. Didnt pick us up until 715. Pizza is not the same. Only saving grace was our server who was awesome.
One star or less for the food. I gave two stars overall because the service was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. We ordered the calamari strips and onion rings for appetizers. They both were clearly what you would buy from the frozen food aisle at the grocery store and then overcooked before serving. The onion rings survived the overcooking and were edible with a good amount of ranch dressing. The calamari was the worst any of the four of us had ever had, we did not finish it, and we were all starving. The four of us ordered the following for dinner: Chile rellenos - soggy and salty Carne Asada Chile Verde - the tomatillo salsa was almost black and the carne was overcooked. Nothing on the dish seemed fresh Half rack BBQ ribs - the flavor was good, but most of the ribs were burnt on one side. Half pound hamburger - no complaints about the burger. I don’t know if we came at a bad time or what, but nothing we had looked fresh like all the posted pictures. We arrived at 5:30 pm for dinner, and the place filled up by 6:00, so it’s not like we got there near closing where you might expect to be served things that had been in the warmer all evening. Maybe it was an off night, but we will never go back.
Waited 25 minutes (after talking to them on the phone) for a pickup down by the Catalina Express nobody showed up.
