The Basque Cultural Center is an absolute gem for anyone who loves hearty, traditional cuisine and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The family-style portions make dining here a true communal experience — perfect for groups, celebrations, or simply sharing great food with friends and family. The Basque dishes are authentic, flavorful, and generously served. Every course feels thoughtfully prepared, and you definitely won’t leave hungry. The group-friendly setting adds to the charm, making it easy to relax and enjoy a long, leisurely meal. If you’re looking for traditional Basque cuisine served in a lively and inviting environment, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!
The food is great. The lamb is magnificent. 5.5 stars. Service is good, should be 4.5 stars. Atmosphere 4.5. It can be bit nosy, they need some acoustic absorption material, however the facility is very nice, very clean and has fresh new look to it. This the third time I've eaten here in the past five years and it has been consistently good.
Party of 4. Had grilled shrimp with polenta and it was excellent. Shrimp was crunchy, polenta creamy. 2 others had steak and 1 had rack of lamb. Sampled lamb and it was tender and cooked perfectly as ordered, med rare. 2 who ordered steak had no complaints although 1 had ordered rare, but cooked med. Included with meal is soup and salad. Service was friendly and efficient. Cost a bargain. Recommended!
One of my friend's wife's co-worker recommended dinner at Basque Cultural Center. This was great meal. Everything was flavorful. We loved how they have daily prix fixe menu items. Saturday's prix fixe items are cod fritters as the appetizer and Roast New York as the main dish $48. It starts with a pot of butternut squash soup at the table. There's bread and butter to dip onto the soup. If you ask, they will give you olive oil for the bread. Next is a salad with this tasty white dressing. The prix fixe meal came with cod fritter as appetizers. We also wanted to try their escargot $17 and today's special, not on the menu, scallops $40. Both were very good. When our entrees arrived, Roast New York's and duck with orange sauce $45, we were surprised how good their mashed potatoes were. Very creamy and goes well with the mains. As for the ambiance, it is a quiet restaurant with 80% full on a Saturday night. The guest are old and respectfully talking at low volumes. Tables aren't right next to each other where you have to shout over each other. The dining room is bright enough to see what you are eating. I like that. The holiday decorations are up and it puts everyone in a good mood. Awesome job everyone at Basque Cultural Center.
Had a group of 30 Riordan class of 73 members for a nice lunch. The staff was wonderful and the food was delicious. Ever had a great time and were happy of the selection of the venue. Been here many times and have never had a bad meal.
This a quiet, yet elegant place to come for lunch. It is tucked away in South San Francisco. The service gentle, caring, not rushed. The food is prepared in the style of the Basque area of Spain and delicious. I had the Basque pasta with spicy tomato, spicy, but not overwhelmingly so.
Delicious, accessible, and super attentive service. So glad they're hanging in there. It was pretty quiet at lunch today, but they had multiple events going on so it was lively. Soup, salad, and mains were delicious as usual. Nov. 2024: Still as good as ever. Rack of lamb is usually only available at dinner, but they can often accommodate requests at lunch. The daily soup is usually good regardless of what it happens to be. Today it was mushroom soup - tasty but a smidge strong on the salt. We all liked it though. The salad was crisp and refreshing. Personally I'd say the food is 4.5 - good value! The basquiase sausage was yummy. Kiddo's hamburger steak looked great. Service is attentive; they often came around offering refills of iced tea and hot water which was helpful. We enjoy the old-school atmosphere. Review from 2020: Old school restaurant with good service and a consistently delicious rack of lamb and soup and salad. Very generous portions of soup and bread, that they refill without asking. I find their other menu options to be inconsistent but I enjoyed my filet mignon special today and the sea bass special was tasty although a smidge overcooked. The scalloped potatoes were fantastic. My toddler ate tons of bread and enjoyed the asparagus soup which was pretty great for us adults. We'll be back for more! I want to try the beef tongue sometime.
I was here for a friend's wedding reception. The site is so beautiful. Everyone so kind, warm and friendly. The food was awesome. I had salmon. Moist. Tender. Warm. Who does that??? Lol. People can kill some salmon but these folks did a great job. I am looking into this place for future events.
Great comfort food at very reasonable prices! Attentive, courteous, but unintrusive service. Slightly more upbeat and lively atmosphere at lunch as opposed to dinner, but you won't go wrong either way. Tossed green salad with the house dressing was a pleasant surprise. NY Steak with a side of veggies and potatoes au gratin was fresh and delicious! Had a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream with a thin crunchy wafer for dessert. Perfect all the way around!
This place is a winner—excellent food, very good service and filled with Basque culture. I had the rack of lamb. It was moist, tender and cooked just as I ordered—medium well. I’ve been to many Basque restaurants in California, Nevada and Idaho, and this place is among the best. The meal included a savory cauliflower soup, which was made with garlic, adding to the flavor, and a fresh salad with a zesty vinaigrette dressing. The lamb came with crispy fries and grilled vegetables. And the red house wine was very good.
Lovely place for family gatherings. Excellent service.. the only thing was we had to wait first few minutes for the staff to get a table ready inspite of having made a reservation. That aside, the salmon was really good. The soup was also good. In all well worth your money. In about 40$, you get a whole meal with salad, main and dessert. The flan was really good! Definitely going to go back again.
Great place for large gatherings. Food overall is okay not excellent- passable. Service is excellent and everyone is hard working. We had a party of 14 people and about 4 different servers helping us. Special of the day is great value for what you get. They ran out of the bacalao appetizer which was disappointing. Still would return.
Parking: Plentiful. Shouldn't have any problem with a large party. Decor: Tasteful if somewhat old fashioned. The artwork give it a nice relaxed atmosphere. The patrons tend to be older with more formal attire which lends a more classy feel. Service: Attentive and polite. Bread and appetizers come out quickly, entrees a bit slow. Ordered the daily specials, Trout with beet and lentil, as well as oxtail with farfalle pasta. The trout was quite tasty, especially the sauce. The oxtail was quite soft and flavorful. Portions are a bit small, except for the amount of pasta. Good for a relaxed lunch or dinner.
While none of these pictures are of the foods provided by this venue, I wanted to make sure and provide an objective review. Came here for a Women’s banquet and we were all incredibly pleased at the size of the venue, the organization of the service and the facilities provided. Great place for large group events.
Food was decent, it was really undersalted. service wasn't all that great, it took about 15 min for someone to come to our table to place an order. But I'm only 16, what do I know? We got the peppered steak, the prime rib and lamb cheek Sunday special, and some grilled shrimp. I personally did not try the shrimp yet.
Always a lovely place to dine. But, they changed the menu big time. Soup and salad always 5 star worthy. I always order the scallops. They’ve been excellent in the past…I think they got a new chef. New menu. The scallops were horribly salty. My husband ordered the beef tung. It was breaded and fried. Very chewy. Not tender as it should be. The dining room wasn’t as full as usual. It could be the new menu. Not going back. We use to love the food. Very sad.
Visiting relatives who live in San Jose and we were staying in San Francisco and this is one of their favorite restaurants that is half way. They obviously have a prix fixed menu that includes soup, salad, entrée, and dessert. Soup and salad are ok. For mains, I ordered the rabbit that was just fair, My wife ordered the scallops which she liked.
Dinner review only: verrrrrrry slow service. We arrived on Saturday at 7:30PM and there were maybe 6 other tables. At least 3 waiters floating around but it was so hard to get their attention. We didn't get our entrees until after 9:00PM... I ordered their special of the day: lamb with veggies and potatoes (cooked medium). It came out COLD and rare. Sent it back and it was warmed up. Everything tasted bland. I would not recommend this place for dinner.
FOOD and EVERYTHING DID NOT EVEN DESERVE A STAR. I went there with a group of people on Friday, 9/6/24. That day I ordered Friday special. However, I had Friday special before, and this time was SO DISAPPOINTED. USUALLY, the piece of salmon was about 1.5 inches by 5.5 inches. This time, it was 1.5 inches by l.5 inches. It was 4 INCHES SHORTER. The veal was only 3 THINLY SLICES LIKE PAPER. IF RESTAURANT DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH AMOUNT OF FOOD, RESTAURANT SHOULD TELL CUSTOMERS THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH. LOOK AT THE SALMON PHOTOS. WAY TOO SMALL. NEVER NEVER NEVER EAT THERE. The whole restaurant had 2 waiters. The female waiters sprayed her saliva all around when she was talking to customers. She needed to wear a mask. Service is very slow.
