Absolutely LOVE this place! My husband picked this place for our anniversary diner and I was skeptical about having "French" food (I am French!) but it was SO GOOD! the duck is the best duck I've had in NYC. The purée and homemade fries were delicious. We started with oyster and homemade foie gras: oyster were fresh as can be. (I think it was dollar oyster Tuesday: so it was a good deal too!) The food was overall fantastic and we will definitely come back & recommend to our friends. The staff was so nice and the restaurant itself is super cute (check out the wall paper in the bathroom when you'll go!). A little French gem in Brooklyn without all the unnecessary tralala.
Outstanding French food — excellent service. We had the burger (huge) with duck confit and gruyere cheese — and the filet of sole. Highly recommended. One note however: the brash young lady who at the end of the evening after the place closes and you’re sipping your wine or talking — the one who walks around and rudely barks at patrons that they need to leave — she’s a detriment to the word hospitality and to the establishment. Not good for business or return guests. paroles de sagesse
Authentic delicious French food in Brooklyn. The burger with gruyere cheese and duck confit is worth the trip. The filet of sole and mushroom dish are also amazing. The bulldog hostess who storms the private dining rooms barking at patrons to leave at evening’s end is a bit much to swallow. A lesson in hospitality would do much for her. Aside from that, excellent fare.
This place is a gem i have been living couple of minutes walk for almost 3 years and one day I went for a dinner and I was actually blast ! I wasn’t expecting that !to be honest I don’t check places and reviews and just walk ! I do work in hospitality and worked for some Michelin restaurants! This place is solid! With a solid good cuisine ! Looking forward another diner there ! Thanks chef for the experience !!
The owners of L'Antagoniste knew what they were doing when putting together this marvelous restaurant. You can come here for something as simple as brunch or for a nice Christmas dinner. The servers are mindful in every step they take. They are kind and attentive without being overbearing. This restaurant has it all, Ambiance, delicious food, and a great staff. I will always come back here because I know what i'm getting and I'm sure they will make sure that it won't change.
We ordered: 1. The mussels and fries as an appetizer, les moules et frites 2. The duck, le canard 3. “Zhee hamburger” 4. Wine (I leave it to my boyfriend who knows more about it, the owner is also very knowledgeable) All three dishes were honestly some of the best French food I’ve ever had. The mussels were perfectly cooked and the broth had rich flavor. The hamburger had duck confit and the duck was an amazing twist on the hamburger. Everything is better with duck fat. Then we had the duck: paired with citrus slices and mashed potatoes. C’était une rêve. Xx
Fathers Day 2023 was our second visit to L'Antagoniste and our second visit was even better than our first. The atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant, the food is exquisitely prepared and presented, the wine selection is superb (my family and I highly recommend a bottle of the sparkling rose that is also served by the glass), the deserts are beautifully crafted and delicious. We highly recommend the duck and lamb entrees, the charcuterie board is a lovely appetizer, and the chocolate mousse dessert is creamy and delicious. The steak tartare appetizer at our first visit was also excellent and fresh, just the right amount. Last but not least the service was also perfect, just the right amount of attention but not too much. Five stars all the way, and don't forget to tip the staff generously. They are worth it.
This is one of my fav restaurants in New York. I happened to visit it the day it opened and had the chance to visit it recent. Still the same amazing personable service, great selection of cocktails and amazing amazing food. It was delightful to see the owner and chat with him. His same vibrant and youthful spirit that was a huge draw when the place opened still drives the restaurant and makes this one of the best gems in NYC that you simply have to go to! Ideally you can take the subway and walk over or drive there as there is street parking available.
Had a wonderful dinner - charcuterie, steak, duck - all delicious, as was the wine. We ate indoors for the first time since March as we are pretty cautious. But we were at ease inside, the tables are generously spaced apart, seemingly much more than 6', nice high ceiling, open windows. The staff was attentive and careful. A lovely, romantic place to enjoy delicious food. Also, they have a lovely back patio with heaters too!
I ordered the special Christmas eve take out dinner, and it was absolutely delicious! It was more than enough for 5 people and all of us really enjoyed it. The Beef Wellington was fantastic, tender and scrumptious. I am so glad we found you. You really helped make our dinner a special time.
Incredibly cozy place, fantastic traditional French food. We had a large group and ordered for the table, tried the charcuterie board, oysters, duck a l'orange, the burger, steaks and other items, everything was fantastic. A bit pricey but absolutely worth it for a special occasion.
I almost cancelled my dinner reservation because I wasn't feeling great. I'm so glad I didn't. I think their food healed me. Go. For a 2nd or 3rd date with someone you want to see again.... to impress a client or for any reason at all. The food, service and ambiance have a gentle, elegant and laid back vibe that the French really know how to pull off. And the classic French fare is spot on.
Terrific local spot. The service is very warm and attentive. The food is classic French done well. The wine list is well priced albeit not expansive. The place is quite cute and good for a date night.
Homey and refined atmosphere. The service is excellent in the fact that they are knowledgeable, accommodating, friendly and highly professional. The food is top-notch. Delicious, inventive yet traditional, and reasonably priced. Their wine and beer list are extensive and have many options to pair perfectly with food. A 5-star experience every time!
One of my favorite restaurants for classic French food. The service is wonderful and the food is spectacular. I would definitely recommend the pressed duck special on Monday nights - it's a fun experience and makes the most tender, delicious duck. We also had dessert here for the first time recently (usually we're too full) and the tarte tatin was also incredible. Love coming here and looking forward to the next time already!
Whether you are dining in or taking out, this place is not to be missed! Undoubtedly, the best food in the neighborhood. Very high quality ingredients and meticulous preparations. If you are taking out, try the "family dinner special." It is both a treat and a great value. Plus, it includes a fresh baguette and a WHOLE tart/pie!
This food experience was quite amazing. I will say the interior decoration at first had me a little worried, it seemed more diner like but then you walk past the open kitchen right into the majestic feeling outdoor seating area. There we are seated and made aware that we only have 90 minutes as they have a very busy night. A little odd but we chalked it up to efficiency. I was advised to get the orange duck, and by the gods it was the best choice I've made. We got the duck cooked medium rare and it was decidant. Tender and cooked to perfection. The texture was slightly chewy at first and then it seemed to dissolve in your mouth. That plate alone made my meal. We then got a creme brulee for dessert and that was a light creamy dessert to help finish the night off. Truly a gourmet experience and a truly a delicious meal.
My return to L'Antagoniste since the pandemic hit in 2020 was welcoming -- like a warm hug from a good friend that you have missed for too long. The atmosphere is comfortable, charming and authentic. The service is welcoming, attentive but not intrusive. The meal (salads and the seared sea scallops and duck a l'orange) was exceptional, prepared with great care and presented beautifully. The wine list is extensive (many hard-to-find wines), with several selections at different price points. Our server's recommendation--a remarkable beaujolais--was a perfect choice. We thoroughly enjoyed our transformative visit to this lovely restaurant. We will be back soon!
I've been here for dinner. And now for brunch and they have knocked it out of the park both times. Dinner: all the food was fantastic but I've got to say it was the salad with a surprise dill cucumber sorbet at the bottom that really took the experience to another level. Brunch: Well we ordered 6 dishes ( for two people ;) ) because we really wanted to try it all and once again everything we had was on point. From Quiche to Duck Hash this French spot is delicious. Come in and try it on for your self. The staff is great, the atmosphere is awesome, and you'll have a wonderful meal!
I’ve lived in the neighborhood for over a decade and walked by several times over the years and never went in until over a year ago. I’m mad it took me so long. Definitely one of my favorite French restaurants here in New York and I’m glad I live so close! 🥰
Food was a whole vibe 🔥 service on point, wine had me feeling boujee but in a good way 🍷✨
Can't recommend enough. Spectacular food and wine list.
WOW! We came here with a big group for a work event. I am a real foodie and can tell you that the food was incredible - words cannot explain how delicious everything was. Everyone was talking about the excellent service and the savory meals we were served. The servers were very welcoming and attentive. I cannot thank enough the owner, Amadeus, and all his staff for the event they provided us. I will definitely be coming back and will be hosting our future work events at L'Antagoniste. Thank you again!
Sat down with fiancé for a Sunday night meal. Owner sat us down at a table where we could see the lunar eclipse perfectly! Amazing food. Great flavors and well cooked. Even though the menu is fancy we still walked out with a reasonable bill. We live a few blocks away, this is our new spot!
I had a double date herw for Valentine's day and everyone walked away more than satisfied. Our host Amadeus was extremely accommodating and friendly. Our waiter really took care of us and chilled wine for the table before we even realized we needed a new bottle. Needless to say he was extremely courteous and thoughtful . The food was amazing, our steaks were cooked perfectly and our appetizers were filling and extremely flavorful.
Very unique spot in Bed Stuy and definitely not the experience I was expecting. Lets start with the place, I came here for a birthday dinner with my dad and a friend. They seated us immediately and the service was pretty quick, food came out quickly too. The space has lots of small wooden tables like a french restaurant but what was nice was that there was a little more space at each table so you didnt feel like you were going to knock things over all the time. They have a lovely black and white photograph wallpaper which reminds me of old school New York restaurants. The food- They do work with local farms and have a list on the wall. They also sell wine by the bottle and its relatively inexpensive, we got a sauv blanc which was about $20. What they do with the food is poetry though, the cheese souffle came with a cheese ice cream, the broth of the mussels was good enough to be from France and the pate comes with a small balloon of cotton candy on the side. I wasnt the biggest fan of the steak tartare, but it was soft and really well prepared, the clafutis tasted excellent, but was slightly on the stodgier side. The wait staff was really good with us, made good recommendations and provided really great service. It does get busy at night though so I do recommend a reservation. They accept cc too and have a lovely patio in the back. I'll return for special occasions, thanks l'antagoniste, for a lovely evening!
this is such a great place ! L'Antagoniste's proprietor Amadeus Brogner created quite a little Gem here ! The cuisine is classic French ! Yet the restaurant's ambiance is not stuffy, au contraire one feels like dining in a cool neighborhood restaurant - The waiting staff is attentive and knowledgeable - the Chef the Cuisine just AMAZING ! There are so many dishes worth to try ... and that is why most folks, like us , come here at least once or twice a month !
What a great hidden gem - I really don’t know why it isn’t always packed. The owner and staff are so great and have a deep knowledge of wine. This place is so cozy and food is fantastic. Don’t know why it’s $$$ in google - prices are very reasonable, especially for wine (many excellent bottles are in the $40s).
Great cozy bday dinner spit. Had the Cliché (escargots, bone marrow and frog legs). Frog leg breading was perfectly crisp and clean. Then we had the Nicoise salad (crushed that), burger, chicken with mushrooms, and apple tart tatin. Had to take half the burger and half the chicken home. Delish leftovers.
This is the most spectacular restaurant that we’ve been to in the area. We were lucky enough to get the oxtail bourguignon, which was the best we’ve had. And all the other food was incredible. Plus, the owner and the team were wonderful.
One of the best in BedStuy. We have always been treated very warmly.
Some items were left out of our order. We called and they immediately apologized and made it right by sending the left out items and a bottle of wine for the trouble. Would highly recommend this place for their attention to detail and service.
Fell in love with the food, ambience, and service! The owner is sooo kind and knowledgeable about everything that happens in the restaurant. You can tell his heart is put into the place. It is reflected in the amazing food, the people, and experience. Loved it!!
I absolutely love this place, and come here as often as I can. The owner is so nice. The staff and service are great. The food is delicious across brunch and dinner. I'm grateful to live nearby, as it's a go-to for celebrations and date night.
EXCELLENT French food in casual-chic neighborhood-restaurant vibes. Servers took incredible care of our whole family on Christmas Day, from the 1-year-old in the high chair to the grandparents. Don't miss the steak tartare!
Perfect venue for VERY fresh food. French menu with local twist. The atmosphere is great. Music is not LOUD, but present. So normal level talking is SoSo nice. The menu changes a lot, and is always fun
Very tasty food. Decent service. Was slightly slow, but overall a good experience
Great dinner, food was on point. Large portions. My partner got the duck and I got the Pork Schnitzel stuffed with Gruyère and ham. Came with house cut fries and a simple salad. Service was attentive and not stuffy, great wine list plus recommendation. Price may look high but I think the quality and quantity are worth it.
Part 2: went back again the following night and had an equally delicious meal. If you're in Brooklyn and love French cuisine, this is the place for you!
Amazing food, much better than Manhattan restaurants
The staff is incredibly friendly, and the restaurant has a warm, cozy vibe. You can choose between the dining room or the bar area for seating. The burger is outstanding.
Every course built toward a complete vision I found remarkable. The staff shows unusual kindness while accommodating all requests. I never feel I've had enough. The staff at L'Antagoniste makes me feel like family. The high regard for L'Antagoniste is justified - it's truly outstanding.
My partner and I both live in the neighborhood and have walked past this place on numerous occasions and finally got the chance to go here. To say that it blew us away is an understatement. I have never written a review to any restaurant before but had to because of how delicious the food was on top of the fantastic service. We got the burger and the chicken and it was one of the best meals I've had in my entirety of living in New York. My girlfriend mentioned that she loved the bread and when we were getting the check Charley our amazing server gave her a loaf to take home and told her to put it in the oven tomorrow morning. This place now holds a special place in our heart and we will be attending again soon!
This restaurant is very close to my heart. As a French person living in NY for 11 years, L’antagoniste is the only place that takes me back home. No other so called French spots in the city manage to emulate that special feeling. the vibes are intimate and welcoming, the servers are knowledgeable, kind and discrete. The food is delicious, the wine list is fabulous and prices are hard to beat. It’s a rare thing to come across today in NYC. Amadéo the owner is the kindest and most hospitable person I’ve met in this industry. What really struck me is the authenticity, the quality of products and the attention to details. If you haven’t yet, give this beautiful place a try and tell your friends and loved one about it.
Always a great experience. The server is very knowledgeable about the menu and did a great job sharing the daily specials. The food is high quality and the menu is very creative. It’s an absolutely a gem in Brooklyn. Hands down to Amadeos the owner who is actually present and is always making sure you’re having an amazing experience.
This was my second time visiting this restaurant and it did not disappoint! I was really impressed with the service tonight and although I may be a little biased as I did mention it was my birthday in the reservation, tonight was really a special touch. Charlie was above and beyond and really paid attention to the mood of the table and surprised and delighted us with some great pairings with wine and food suggestions. It was very thoughtful of him to mention he saw the notes for tonights dinner occasion, as I am used to some places completely ignoring it. Granted tonight may have been a slower evening and this may not happen all the time it really made the difference in the overall experience. Highly recommend the red wine suggestions with dinner and port for dessert as a digestif.
Beautiful space with delicious food that transports you to France. Excellent, well-priced wine list. We started by sharing the generous charcuterie and cheese platter and the giant fresh salad bowl. Mains were delicious, including the specials of filet mignon and branzino and vegetables with truffle en papillote. Finished with a classic tarte tatin.
Excellent food. Brunch was great. Got there at ². They close at ³ for brunch so plan to arrive earlier if u want more time but it was enough for me and a friend. Mussels, bomb. Charcuterie plate, bomb. Wine, although they didn't have Chardonnay, the Italian white was good. Recommend highly of you want seafood options
Duck, sea bass, burger entrees superb. The mushroom soup is a must pre-course. Steak tartare was delicious. The bread and butter basket is a great touch. Attentive and informed servers. Warm, cozy ambience. Delightful dining experience of French fusion culinary delights.
So glad I found this place. The food was stellar, service was top, and the vibes were cozy. We had such a great time and excited to go back.
They had a filet mignon & fois gras special that may be my favorite entrée in all of Bed Stuy. The rest of the food was very good as well, but the frog legs could have been seasoned more liberally. That said, our waiter was kind and attentive, the interior was extremely welcoming, and I very much look forward to going back.
I have eaten here twice in the last two weeks and loved all my meals. Particularly loved the Duck a L’Orange. The restaurant ambience is warm and inviting and the staff are all so friendly and provide excellent service.
I’ve been coming to l’antagoniste for half a dozen years now and they are consistently delightful. Atmosphere is lovely. Service has always been great. And the food is quality. It’s a special occasion place for me but I also have loved getting their whole chicken for pickup. Enjoy!
Excellent, cozy restaurant. Great for a date night. Romantic. Excellent wine selection and the food was divine! And these were just the appetizers. I forgot to photograph the actual meal. Service of course was great! You can’t have great food and poor service. They earned their stars! You should rsvp though!
My boyfriend and I decided to drop in without a reservation, and we were fortunate to be seated just in time for the busy dinner rush. The restaurant was fully booked, but the service was exceptional. Our waitress was fantastic—she provided clear and concise descriptions of the menu items, making our choices easy. I was starving so ordered the steak tartare since it would come to the table quickly since it’s raw. The presentation of it looks very pretty just when I scooped up some to put on a piece of bread the egg yolk popped and started dripping nice and evenly. I opted for the burger cooked medium rare, and it was incredibly tender, practically melting in my mouth. The burger looked substantial, a testament to its lack of added preservatives. My boyfriend chose the steak frites, and the steak was impressively thick and flavorful, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients. One wall proudly displays their local farm suppliers, which speaks to their commitment to quality. The frites, a nod to their French inspiration, were perfectly crispy and absolutely lived up to my expectations. You can truly taste the freshness in every bite. Don’t hesitate—make a reservation and experience this gem for yourself!
Decadent and delicious. One of my new favorites in the area, already planning a visit back. From the food to the cute vibe curated in the restaurant, this place is a true gem. Super authentic flavors and very kind and attentive staff! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quality meal.
This was my first experience with this restaurant and I went for my birthday with my husband and we had an amazing time. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, the service was great and the food, oh my gosh, the food was absolutely delicious. Them mussels were to die for (I can swim in that broth) and the oysters were so good. The Salade du Marché with that cucumber sorbet and sherry vinaigrette was so different from any other salad I’ve had before but the favorite thing for me was the duck. The Le Canard A L'Orange was fire. I never had duck before and for my first time it was great. I will definitely be visiting L’Antagonists again.
L'Antagoniste provided a delightful dining experience, with a private nook adding to the ambiance. The three-course meal we chose was a standout. My lobster bisque, pork cordon Bleu, and vanilla ice cream, and my wife's steak tartare, duck l'orange, and tarte tatin were all delicious. The restaurant was relatively empty when we left, which may have contributed to the serene atmosphere (we had a late reservation). Overall, L'Antagoniste appears to be a wonderful place to dine and enjoy a pleasant evening.
My first time to a surprisingly lovely, small and quiet French bistro in Brooklyn. I came here on a Monday so it wasn't too busy. The atmosphere is intimate and not too noisy. Wine selection is surprisingly adequate for a place of this size. Service was attentive and polite without being overbearing. I did not have an issue with the level of service or the speed the dishes were served. The ingredients are fresh and it appears to be locally sourced. However, their menu is limited to a few fishes but I guess this is all about quality control with a smaller kitchen. We tried their steak tartare, salad Nicoise, poulet aux Morilles, and le canard a l'orange. Each dish was excellent tasting and presented properly. You can tell the chef puts in effort nd heart into each thing that comes out of the kitchen. Each ingredient serves a purpose to the dish and compliments each other. The chef also seems to be well versed in the use of different salts to control the savory level and bring out the taste of the dish. I don't usually see this too often so a definite compliment to their chef! I'll need to return to explore their other selections in the future. Update: Been there several times now. Food and service have been consistently good and on par. Each time their soups have been a star (different each time). L'escargot with bone marrow and foie gras was delicious. Don't forget to dip the marrow sauce with some bread! They have a filet mignon special that matched all the ingredients such as foie gras and potatoes seemlessly like a medley. Definitely worth a try if it's offered.
Bed stuy gem! I will always keep this place close to the heart. I’ve had some amazing meals here. It is absolutely one of my favorites in nyc. The staff are dope. Wine suggestions are on point. Chefs kiss with every heartwarming dish. Maya keeps the place running like a pro! Can’t wait to visit again!!! IYKYK
Cozy French neighborhood bistro that makes you feel at home. The owner Amadeus is usually there and goes out of his way to make you comfortable. Maya is the sommelier and since we are usually in right when they open is waiting on us. Her wine recs have always exceeded our expectations. We usually dine with our 11 month old baby who sometimes needs extra attention. Maya has even helped us with the baby while we finished our last bites. The food is very good. We usually start with oysters which are very fresh and served with a classic mignonette. Last night we has the appetizer on special which was bone marrow, fried frog legs, escargot and black garlic. We completed by our meal sharing the Contre Filet (12 oz dry aged NY strip steak) and Roasted Hen of the Woods. All pictured here so you can SEE how delicious it was. I would really recommend anything on their menu but these in particular if you catch them on the menu get them. You won’t regret it.
For all that is good and lovely, get the duck and the passionfruit dessert. Every other dish we got was also lovely but that orange sauce with the duck is just *chefs kiss* Chicken was so tender and very quickly disappeared into neverland. Service was awesome, super friendly servers. Open kitchen towards the back is also very pretty. I really like being able to watch a dish come to life. Just go try em out! If you don’t like it then we can bare knuckle fight it out and get a beer after.
People love it here my brother frequents this place often. The owner is super nice and often comes and greets the tables. I’ll set down and discuss the menu or even if you brought your own wine in he’ll discuss the wine and is very knowledgeable. It’s a cute charming little place.
We had dinner there tonight for my boyfriend's birthday. The food was fine. The service was slow, though to be fair, there was only one waitress for the whole dining room, and she did all she could. I've had better times at L'Antagoniste but it remains a solid spot for great food and very reasonably-priced wine. I might just not pick this place for a special occasion.
After living in the neighborhood for a year we finally got to try this french restaurant. We only had brunch but everything our table got was great. A little sad about the coffee and non alcoholic beverages selection, this place is clearly tailored to a wine audience. No juices and only espresso based coffees. Also no dairy alternatives.
We tried both salads. They were super delicious. I'm still thinking about them 3 days later. The duck with lentils was over salted. Overall it was a beautiful experience.
We went for brunch. The food was delicious. We tried the mussels, Vietnamese sandwich, steak tartare, duck with hash and eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. The Vietnamese sandwich was served at room temperature. I think it would have tasted better if they microwaved it for 30 secs to warm up the bread and pork belly and added a touch more aioli sauce. The duck hash was tasty, but my wife said it could have used a little more duck. Being brunch, maybe the portions are supposed to be smaller? The steak tartare was good. I loved the mustard mixed in. (FYI I am writing this review the next day. I did not get sick from the raw meat or egg.) Never had eggs Benedict before, but it is how I imagined it to be. The homemade English muffin was a little dense though. The mussels were fresh and plump. The broth was great for dipping bread. Despite the area becoming more gentrified, it was good to see the restaurant attracting a diverse mix of customers. Service was excellent. Waitress was efficient and attentive. Parking was easy. I found a spot around the corner. The bill was $117 for three people before tip. No desert or alcoholic beverages. I want to go back again to try their other dishes.
The food was good, the service was ok. Nice place to eat if you are in the area. I like the steak tartare but in my opinion the portion was too big, the burger was ok but didn’t have that special something to make it memorable, the salad was not special. But overall the flavors were on point.
I tried L'Antagoniste for dinner for the first time. I usually go for brunch, and it's been a solid choice for many years on Malcolm X in Bed Stuy. Le canard a l'orange was a highlight, but the other dishes were average (moules, salmon). The service, however, was unusually off during our visit. Our server was openly rude and annoyed while we placed our order. After selecting the meals, I gave her my drink order, and as my husband and daughter were about to place their drink orders, she brusquely walked away and said she needed to place our food order before "she forgot." She came back for a few seconds, which gave us enough time to get my daughter's beverage in, and she walked away while my husband was in mid-sentence to ask about the beer selection (his 3rd attempt). We actually considered just leaving at that point because she didn't seem like she wanted to serve us or be there in general. My general rule is anything $50 or above per person should not result in feeling like you're imposing on your server or testing their patience (or memory!)
Mixed feelings about the food and environment here. First off we were there on a warm July day sitting outside. The warm smell of the garbage wafted into their backyard area but no one seemed bothered by it. The French bruger was cooked well but tasted only just ok. The duck confit was a bit dry and the green salad didn't even come with any dressing. Weird. For positives. The waitress was awesome and attentive. The French bread and butter was awesome. I would say come thru for a brunch and get the tried and true breakfast items (omelette maybe??) And sit inside for sure .
Decent place for brunch. The pork bahn mi sandwich is more like a pork belly sandwich due to lack of slaw, cilantro, and other flavors. Still a good sandwich with gold aioli but not a bahn mi. The mussels could have been fresher or better cooked. Fries were good. Service was good and staff was friendly
Nice place. Friendly waitress. The food was just ok.
It pains me to write this review as we've been to the restaurant a couple times before and always loved it, but 3rd time was not the charm. While our server was really sweet and accommodating, she did not know what she was doing. There were 3 of us: 1 ordered an appetizer and main dish, another ordered 2 appetizers -- the raw oysters and a cooked one -- and another just ordered a main dish. It would stand to reason that the appetizers would come first, but instead they brought the 2 main dishes, and the cooked appetizer. Whaaaaat? That was an epic fail in server/kitchen communication, and I put it squarely on the server to not know better -- even rookies would know better. And while the appetizers seemed to be fine, the main dish (chicken) was not; it didn't taste great nor prepared well, and I suspect it was the chicken itself that was not high quality -- farm to table concept failure there. Tea was forgotten for dessert, just cancelled it at that point. Don't get me wrong, some of the dishes were really nice -- beef carpaccio, oysters were fresh, dessert was lovely. Given the restaurant's roots from L'Philosophe, this reviewer can only philosophize that it was more antagoniste in experience.
Cute spot with a warm atmosphere. Wasn’t blown away by the food and flavors in general. We had the mussels and tartar to start, which were both just alright. The fish of the day (cod) was tasty, however the steak was not cooked well - chewy and hard. Chocolate mousse and hazelnut ice cream were also alright. Service was friendly.
Heard a lot of good things about that place. As a French person l was really disappointed . Plate of cheeses is a lie. Only one piece of goat cheese. Service mediocre. No sink in the restroom for a restaurant it s a mistake. . All is OVERPRICED. But l have to say that the duck was perfectly cooked
Chef who used to work in Shanghai we first met was no longer there, he brought some authentic French home cooking here in Bedsty as a pioneer. Now the place has raised the price with spotty service and mediocre “ french bistro” food where you can encounter everywhere in nyc. My steak was 31 dollars, which not a special cut and on the small side, no one gave us water, menu, bread.... once being directed to the bar not table. It was 9pm. The table was not occupied when we left even we were told there was a reservation. We were charged 16 cork fee being taxed then tipped on. We had to ask for wine glasses and poured the wine by ourselves. We tipped a bit more 10 percent to avoid this conversation because the owner was there to give us the bar seats, not the menu, wine glasses.... and this was the fifth chef hired since opened. They opened on Xmas eve, Xmas, all the way through... no wonder the chef kept running away. The beauty of fine neighborhood dining has gone lost here.
The food is okay. However, the service is problematic. On my last visit the server was very rude to me and a business associate. I wrote to the manager to complain, and the server actually wrote back to me, cursing me out for calling her a racist. I’m confused… if you act racist, then you’re a racist. The manager never wrote back to me. Never. I then spoke to several other people in the neighborhood, and several other black people said they don’t go there to eat because they have issues serving brown people. Not good in 2024.
We had 7:30 dinner reservations and still no entree at 9:00pm. Server mentioned that the chef “got mad” and there was disorder in kitchen. Oddly, everyone that arrived after us had their food. The cheese plate was the only thing we did get and was sub par to say the least. After notifying staff that we were leaving (without our meal) they handed us our meal in a to go box. Got home to two slabs of meat and no sides - ordered steak medium well and it was rare. This experience was beyond disappointing - not sure how you can run a business this way. We will not be returning.
We went here yesterday and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. The burger was underwhelming – the beef lacked flavor and the bun was not good at all. Most importantly, we noticed a fly inside our water bottle after already drinking a couple of cups from it. When we pointed this out to the waitress, her reaction was unprofessional; instead of apologizing, she asked “how did this come there?” which felt dismissive and uncomfortable. She had also told us earlier that the burger was her favorite, but when we mentioned the bun wasn’t good, she admitted she didn’t like it either – very inconsistent. Despite these issues, we still paid our bill with a 10% tip, but we will definitely not be returning.
