Sugar and Spice is an absolute Orange County classic and there is a reason it has been around forever. Anytime you are in Newport or Balboa you almost have to stop here for the iconic frozen chocolate dipped banana. I have had it many times and it never misses. Simple high quality ingredients with the perfect chocolate shell and your choice of nuts or sprinkles. This visit I decided to switch things up and try one of their ice cream cookie sandwiches and I was pleasantly surprised. I went with cookies and cream and strawberry with sprinkles around the outside. The cookies were honestly the standout. Soft and warm in the center with a slight gooey texture that paired perfectly with the ice cream. They were not too hard or crumbly which made it easy to bite into without everything falling apart. The ice cream itself was very creamy and both flavors were well balanced and not overly sweet. Everything came together really nicely with each bite. It is a simple affordable dessert but done really well. Overall Sugar and Spice is a must stop dessert spot and a true Newport staple. Great for families kids or just a casual walk by the water. Always worth it.
A must if you’re in New Port area! The balboa bars are amazing. I recommend the dark chocolate dip, one side dipped in Heath bar & the other in toasted coconut! The Reese’s crumble dip is also wonderful! Parking is awful. Maybe park off the island and walk on.
I'd never had a frozen banana as a treat (other than the usual pieces in smoothies etc.), and my expectations were low (I was suspecting something soggy or completely solid frozen). This cute little place had a line even though it was early in the morning. There is no seating available, but we found a bench on the sidewalk. We had a banana with crumbled Reese's and a vanilla ice cream with sprinkles. It was so good! And the banana was perfect! Definitely recommend it!
I always drive by this street and the frozen banana signs this time there was some parking open right in front parked and got me a chocolate frozen banana. It was great.
A naturally sweet treat, no added sugar needed, with a creamy texture reminiscent of banana ice cream. With the right toppings, it becomes even more irresistible.
Sugar ‘n Spice is a must-stop if you’re on Balboa Island—especially if you’re an Arrested Development fan! I had the cherry-dipped frozen banana with crumbled Reese’s and it was probably the best one I’ve ever had. My wife and kids tried different combos of toppings and everyone walked away happy. It was a big hit with the whole family. Delicious, nostalgic, and totally worth the visit. Highly recommend!
Ah yes, as a fan of arrested development I had to try a frozen banana when I visited balboa island for the first time. Thankfully I wasn’t disappointed. Is this my favorite dessert of all time? No. But it’s utterly unique and delicious, and it’s a lot of fun. A must try!
GO GO GO!! This is a cute hidden gem on Balboa Island. We ordered the frozen chocolate dipped banana with Oreo crumbles and then another chocolate dipped banana with Oreo and salted caramel. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!
I used to bike to Balboa Island as a kid when my family would vacation in Newport Beach in the summer and we would get Balboa Bars or frozen bananas here. Visited Balboa Island on an anniversary trip and got a Balboa Bar with everything on it. Tasted better than I remember! Nostalgic and delicious way to relive my childhood memories!
Be sure to ask about the flavor of the month! I had the Orange Twist, and it was absolutely perfect for a sunny day. My friend went with the Balboa Bar topped with this month’s special, hot fudge chocolate, and it was amazing. 😋
Love coming here. Frozen banana is awesome! The cookie is huge and the balboa bar is really good. Lines get long though so be ready to wait. I love coming here whenever the family visits Newport Beach. It’s a must stop! The frozen banana never disappoints. My go to is milk chocolate with everything topping! Parking on the island is a pain sometimes because there’s limited parking and the line for the banana gets long pretty often. We’ve come late at night and in the afternoon and the line was long at both times during the day. So just expect to wait a bit and hopefully you find parking quick! This is worth it and an absolute must visit if you’re in the area!
The frozen banana is a great sweet treat. It is a walk up frozen banana stand wit a few benches on the sidewalk by the stand. Parking is a little tricky to get on balboa island. Plenty of choices for toppings for your banana. We went with milk chocolate and Reese’s peanut butter cup and peanut butter drizzle. It was awesome.

Chocolate balboa bar dipped in Reese Peanut butter crumble. You won’t be disappointed I promise. It’s so good. And so simple. It’s actually wild that no one else is doing this as successfully as these guys. Maybe it’s the vibe and experience of riding the ferry over, walking through the island, getting your balboa bar etc. It’s a whole thing and it can’t be beat. Either way, it’s a must stop for me whenever I’m in Newport! So good. (Cannot comment on the frozen bananas as I’ve never tried them but I say go with your gut but hopefully your gut says ice cream because it’s 12/10).
Sugar 'n Spice is a historic Balboa Island landmark, serving its famous original frozen bananas and Balboa Bars since July 4, 1945, started by Bob and Dot Cook and continuing under new ownership, known for its classic dipped treats, becoming an inspiration for the "Arrested Development" TV show's frozen banana stand, and remaining a beloved local tradition for generations

unique desserts for sure, we really enjoyed our visit! Good variety of homemade ice creams, and unique frozen bananas.... sundae was outta this world! plenty of different toppings to choose from, something for everyone! The staff were really kind, especially to the grandkids in our group, and they interacted not treating like mere customers, but really with a friendly attitude for welcoming everyone. This was a terrific find on our adventure to Balboa Island, and this sure gives us a great reason to come back!
Excellent treats! We got the dark chocolate banana with Reese’s and almonds and it was delicious. Same with the cookie dough ice cream with Oreo crumbles. Definitely recommend!

Probably one of the most iconic spots at Balboa Island, saw a lot photos posted at this place. We choose classic frozen banana with dark chocolate dipping, and almond as toppings, turns out, this is a very healthy while delicious dessert 🤤
Yum! I’ve never had a frozen banana before like this and am so glad we stopped by for dessert! The arrested development reference is hilarious. The banana itself is a bit pricey, but great to split between two people. We got the dark chocolate with hot fudge brownie and Reese’s crumbles. I have sensitive teeth so had to wait a little bit to let the banana defrost before comfortably biting into the more frozen parts, but overall it was delicious. It IS messy, so beware! Most of the toppings did fall off too while we were eating it.
I was excited to finally try a frozen banana from Sugar n Spice. The banana was a bit expensive at $8 but I thought it was enjoyable and more filling than what I expected. Although I probably wouldn’t get this frequently, it was an enjoyable experience and I am glad I tried it.
Came for the famous frozen banana. It was good. I got it dipped in the original chocolate, and rolled in peanuts. The chocolate could have been thicker, it was pretty thin and didn't really taste it. That being said, it was more or less what I expected. I ate it all, and it was good. My daughter got the frozen cheesecake on a stick dipped in chocolate, and rolled in fruity pebbles. She really liked it. We came here because my daughter is a huge Arrested Development fan, and wanted to see the Banana Stand that the Bluths Original Frozen Banana was based on.
I really enjoyed this spot during my recent trip to California. I ordered the balboa bar (ice cream dipped in chocolate) and had it covered in peanuts. I also got peanut butter and jelly as a topping. This was an excellent combo. One thing I did notice on two separate occasions was they charged a slightly higher price than what was listed on their menu. I am not sure if the prices went up and they just didn’t update the menu or what. Overall it was a delicious treat and I would definitely recommend stopping here.

This was one of the places that I read about. I was under the impression that this is a must go to place on Balboa Island. I definitely had to try it! I ordered a frozen banana covered in chocolate. I decided to go a little over the top and get a peanut butter and jelly topping. The best part of this was the peanut butter and jelly. The banana itself was a little flavorless. It seemed like they had used a more green banana to make the chocolate covered banana. I don’t think I would try it again.
