Southern Caribbean Restaurant Birmingham Reviews
I will be back very soon for some curry chicken. This past Sunday I wanted some oxtails.I checked Goggle maps and found Southern Caribbean. I also got the spicy beef and chicken patties. OMJESUS I will be back soon.
I’ve been to Jamaica, and this food was 100% authentic and full of flavor. Friendly owners and great prices for flavors you can’t get anywhere else!
I had the blackened salmon, rice and peas with green beans. The salmon was so on point that I used the sauce for the dinner roll as well as the coco bread. I didn’t leave a drop! The green beans were also wonderfully seasoned and the rice and peas is what I expect from an authentic Caribbean restaurant. I’ll definitely be back!
Ordered ox tails, rice and peas, and cabbage. Also picked up some jalepeno cornbread. Man, let me tell you that this was really good and tasty. Oxtails so tender and packed with flavor. Rice and peas the same. Best cabbage i have ever had. Those jalepeno cornbread muffins. Wow. Make sure you all get some if you like em spicy. So glad I stopped here today. I will be back for some patties and that snapper. Thanks for the good food and service.
I took a leap of faith and tried something new on Thursday, and wow, I was blown away! The Large Jerk Pasta truly delivered a flavor explosion—10/10! The Jerk Chicken was packed with flavor, and the pasta and sauce were seasoned to perfection. Seriously, if you haven’t checked this place out yet, you’re missing out!
My cousin and I decided to take a road trip to get some Caribbean food, we stopped here and was not disappointed at all. The food is fresh and hot. I was surprised that the Mac and cheese was that food and filling. I ordered mild beef patty, jerk chicken patty, oxtails, Mac and cheese and rice and peas. That’s some REAL rice and peas ! Will definitely be back.
The curry lamb, jerk pasta, jerk chicken was all good. I drove across town just to try this restaurant and it did not disappoint. You taste the jerk seasoning throughout the meat and the portions sizes are great compared to other places that I have visited. I know where to come when, I want some good caribbean foods.
Really great food! Flavorful and filling. I ordered the jalapeño cornbread (served as two muffins). I also ordered a jerk wrap. Wrap with meat and cabbage served with an orange flavorful sauce. Only spent) $13. Great value. I will return. Update: I love this place! The spicy beef Patties are awesome! The jerk quesadillas are very flavorful and a big portion.
I decided to change things up and check out this well-known Caribbean restaurant. I'm so happy I did, right when you walk in your hit with the amazing Jamaican food aroma. I couldn't decide on what I wanted, so I got a variety (don't judge me, lol). I ordered 5 different entrees, jerk chicken, curry goat, jerk salmon, brown stew chicken, and oxtails. The wait time was about 30 minutes, but i didn't mind at all. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was amazing. I will definitely be back very soon
This food was delicious! We normally drive to Atlanta to get food like this. Don't be afraid, the neighborhood is a little sketchy, but this is a gem. You won't regret it. I ate the red snapper and my husband and daughter ate the oxtail. It was all so good and the portions are great. We ate outside and it went well. Second visit: I returned last night 12/8/23 and I was so excited to receive my whole fish! I didn't know how to order it, I just said a whole fish with the head and all and they looked at my weirdly, I guess because people around here don't order that! I am from the Dominican Republic so that's right up my alley! I added pictures here to show you how happy I was with this purchase. The dish was $20, but I got like two plates of food! I definitely can take the leftovers home! I love this place, it reminds me of my little island in Hispaniola.
Every time I visit Birmingham, I must come here to eat. The amount of food you get for their prices is well worth every penny! The service is always quick and customer service is great. Limited seating but every time I’ve visited we were able to dine-in. This is my #1 spot for authentic Jamaican food. Go check them out … you won’t regret it.
This was delivery, so I can't speak much about the environment, but the food scratched a mighty itch. The chicken was seasoned DOWN! Super tender and delicious. The rice and peas were less coconutty than I'm used to, but still tasted amazing. The whole plate was still piping hot too. The portions were beyond nice. The plate was $12.50 and the patty was $3. The last time I got a comparable plate, it was $25+. I will be ordering again!
The food was definitely good there was no problems with my order at all the only reason why I couldn't give it a full five stars is because of the the beef patties weren't meaty if you understand what I mean by that they just didn't have that much meat in them other than that everything else was certainly delicious.
A co-worker order lunch here about 4 months ago and I enjoyed it. Flavors were balanced and everything was great. Second time I had food from here the rice and peas were both spicy. Which I didnt understand. Though not what I was expecting the cabbage had a good flavor This order we both ordered the Jerk chicken which was not as flavorful as my oyher experiences. My colleague ordered mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. She said the mac and cheese was okay nothing to brag about and the mashed potatoes were good esp with the jerk sauce. I ordered the cabbage with rice and peas again. The cabbage was not spicy and I could actually taste that sugar had been added to sweeten it. But it and the rice and peas were okay. Overall there seems to be a lack of consistency in the preparation of dishes. It was edible and satisfying, but having had Jamaican food cooked by family and friends it did not come close flavor wise this time at all.
Amazing food! Jerk chicken was fantastic. I asked if I could just buy meat so I could try multiple options, the nice lady said I could but I would have to pay full price to do it. So I only got to try the chicken. I got two sides I didn’t eat because I am on a diet. They did look good…..place is small, not sure how clean it is in the back, and the neighborhood is questionable but all the risks are with it for the jerk chicken!
On first entering I was a little skeptical due to location and basic/mediocre appearance, but I’ve found many hidden treasures like this one. Food was worth the drive for sure. My first time trying Ox tails and Jerk chicken and it was very good. A little spicy (jerk) which Fiance said it should be, but very well seasoned. Cabbage and rice/beans was good also. Macaroni was good but a little sweet which was different. Loved the Guava drinks also. Service was great and loved the accent, great conversation when ordering. Everyone that came in seemed pleasant and created a welcoming environment for the most part. Loved the flag display on menu also💕
While the food looked great, it lacked in flavor. I’m not one to leave bad reviews but I hope this can help them in the future. The rice and peas lacked flavor as did the oxtails and cabbage. The oxtails were too sweet and lacked authentic Jamaican flavor. The cabbage was flavorless as well. Was headed back there Mississippi and stopped through but I won’t be back. 4/10
food was served with too much sauce , sauce was everywhere wouldn’t even grade the food taste because all i could taste was the sauce they served the jerk chicken. the men preparing the food was also very unpleasant which gave poor quality service. the beef patty was good though
I dine and take out. I was referred to this restaurant for good food and service. I used to love their food once I found it, I even told other individuals about their food being tasty and Caribbean. I ordered there multiple times. I even talked to the cook and communicated with him when I had a small issue about the size of the oxtails not to be stubborn or difficult but to understand the inventory on what to expect. He explained to me well how sometimes shopping varies. I understood and it was okay with me and I thanked him for letting me know. But I placed an order on Saturday 9.13.25 and it was awful like leftovers. I looked at the male cook at the time and he knew from my expressions that I was disappointed in my order but I do not like confrontations or making someone feel my concern is an issue. I will not return, it was good while it lasted I have paid a lot of money into supporting this business and always tipped to show my love for them doing a great job but lately it's been like since the area isn't that great they feel like they can serve or give any type of customer service. They lost a valuable supporter of any black or small business.
I guess some people get special treatment because our plates were not busting open with food and there was no smell of seasonings! This was a big disappointment! The four of us were disappointed to the fullest! I would have rather had McDonald's! The only thing that was good was the drink! Look up Jamaican D's from Philly, now that's authentic Jamaican food!!!! Not this slop!
