High Lúa Brooklyn Reviews
The lychee soda was so delicious! I have had their soups many times and they never disappoint.
I had a Bánh Xèo obsession (𝙑𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙚) that got curbed after devouring every one that I cross paths with during my Saigon and Hanoi visits (plus all over🗽). This is a Central 🇻🇳 dish whose name is synonymous with the sound the (turmeric mixed) rice flour makes when it hits the hot pan. Every region has its own version, the biggest difference being how you eat it. Like Southern 🇻🇳 (and in my 🏠), at this eatery you break off a piece of the sizzling (xèo) crepe and wrap it in fresh 🥬 or just put it in a bowl and go at it. Whichever way you choose, DO NOT forget to dip it in nước chấm (sweet and sour fish dipping sauce) for the full experience!
It’s one of the most authentic places and one of the best Pho's you'll find within NYC (it beats Di An Di in Greenpoint, Thai Son in Jackson Heights, Madame Vo, and a few others I have tried). They have thai basil, jalapeño, lime, and the bean sprouts we need in life (a lot of NYC spots don’t have one of the above) - the broth was pretty good and tangy, getting close to that SoCal Garden Grove (Pho 79) quality I've been searching for these past few years. Other dishes we tried were all great and the hit the nail on the head, price point is great considering it's NYC. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone searching for good Vietnamese food in the city. If you're looking for Bahn Mi specifically, Ba Xuyên in Sunset Park Brooklyn still wins that claim to fame - High Lua's were still delicious.
Nice Food ! For Service only Three Stars because They forgot my bahn mi to Go
**Staff all wears mask. Indoor and Outdoor available. Tables spaced apart. For this review, I will recount my two visits (yes it was so good I had to go back). When this was first recommended to me, I made a plan to go with a friend so we could try different dishes. We opted to sit inside even though there were some spaces available outdoor. At this time, the indoor dining ban restriction in NY was eased to a very limited capacity. The available seating includes a long table (picnic style) near the restroom entrance, some seating on the side (there is a corner seat that is very coveted and usually taken) and a table set up next to the bar. For my first visit with a friend, we ordered summer rolls, fried passionfruit wings, stir fried corn with salted duck egg, and the grilled pork banh mi. Of course we had to get their signature dish Bun Bo Hue (hue beef noodle) and the ever popular Beef Pho (pho bo). The rolls were packed with lettuce, mint, basil, cucumber, vermicelli and we picked shrimp as the protein and delicious peanut sauce. The wings piqued my interest because I had never seen any other place offer and flavor. They passionfruit fish sauce they use creates a very nice aroma and flavor. They were fresh and crispy. The salted duck egg corn we got because it reminded me of the Chinese flavors and it was quite different than the buttercorn or cheese corn that I get at other Asian restaurants. The banh mi we shared amongst ourselves. The pork was tasty and you just cannot go wrong with any banh mi they offer really. The bun bo hue was loaded and the broth had a little kick to it that lingered after. There is a reason why this dish is one of their specialties because it has it all and then some. Even if you are not a spice fan, this dish will be one you will remember. It is perfect for sharing or if you are very hungry. The beef pho was super flavorful. if you plan to order both, it is better to eat the beef pho first and then the bun bo hue after. Each dish has certain flavor profile and intensity that should be enjoyed individually. For drinks, I opted with the ever popular Vietnamese coffee and my friend got the limonade with basil seeds. There was water available and the servers for the initial visit were on point and so friendly. Two ladies, Suzi and Ribbon were working non stop and checked on us often (in addition to the outdoor diners and packing the deliver and to go orders). At one point, a gentleman with glasses came out of the kitchen area to make sure we were doing all right and asked us how we found out about the restaurant. When I mentioned a friend recommended High Lua, he was both so happy and surprised. Later on, I find out that this person is the owner of the establishment and his name is Kenny. He was working as hard as his employees were yet took time out to greet customers. He apologized it was os busy and he was working nonstop in the kitchen earlier. I felt bad for taking him away from his work but was glad he introduced himself to us and took time to chat. He is very humble and has quite a strong work ethic. Much respect to him. The first visit left such a deep impression on me that I decided to go visit again but this time alone. There were other menu items that I definitely wanted to try. As I arrived, the bar top was again full of bags of food ready for pick up and delivery. The two nice ladies who worked the first time had a well deserved night off and another employee name Chris was working (very diligent and courteous). Kenny was outside the kitchen this time but still working non stop packing orders to go / delivery. I ordered the sausage rolls with peanut sauce, and two entrees (pork bacon and quail egg and the grilled pork over rice. The slow cooked pork was so so tender and delicious. The other pork rice dish was super savory and grilled to perfection. Great food. Excellent service. My compliments to the staff at the FOH and the heroes who handle the BOH operations. Highly recommended family business. I will be visiting again for sure.
Went with my bf and a friend just yesterday and got 4 appetizers and 3 different entrees between the 3 of us. Favorites: Tamarind wings: must have! The sauce was sweet, savory, and evenly coated perfectly fried wings, definitely getting this one again! Spring rolls: these were amazing! Im still drooling just thinking about them. The spring rolls seemed fresher than the usual that I get in chinatown and the filling was more discernable than a weird gray meatball that ive had before. The fish sauce also has a little something extra that I've never had before; definitely coming back for these! Beef pho: my bf actually ordered this one, I just helped myself LOL The broth was surprisingly clear and clean tasting but still packed with flavor, even before added lime juice and veggies! Grilled chicken/pork with rice: it actually comes with a side salad?!?! With cherry tomatoes and cucumbers and a dressing with a bit of a kick (not that I could really tell, i drenched the entire plate with the fantastic fish sauce) The "good to try but not what I come back for": Pho rolls: i got these cause they sounded great but overall, the rice roll was super thick and overwhelmed most of the other flavors :/ Vietnamese pancake: i was so confused on how to eat this but ended up wrapping some of the pancake in a leaf of romaine and dipped in fish sauce. The pancake was pleasantly crispy and had an unexpected coconutty aroma. Nice to look at, 4/5 taste imo Extra: lychee iced tea was jam packed with lychee flavor (even some lychee pulp!) Overall: this cozy lil place kills it with presentation, decor, and the comfort foods. Appetizers are new, fun, and definitely worth trying. The spring rolls and pho alone are definitely worth making my commute from Staten Island!
What an incredible experience! Delicious beef pho, excellent service, cozy ambiance. Would absolutely come back.
Great local Vietnamese spot in Williamsburg. Both quality of food & portions were very good. Service was friendly and ambiance was convivial. We got the veg spring rolls and Bun Ga Nuong (lemongrass chicken with vermicelli) and both dishes were delicious. The lemonade with basil seed was too sweet so would skip. Otherwise lovely experience.
The standard here makes you question why others fall short. All their dishes meet quality expectations. Most importantly, the service exceeds expectations! The workers and the cuisine are truly excellent. This restaurant exceeded what I expected.
Exceptional new menu full of legit Viet dishes - the Mi Quang, Bo Kho, sticky rice with chicken, and Bun Cha Ha Noi are standouts.
the bún chà here was SO good, as was the salted plum soda. will be coming back the next time i’m in the area :)
Love the broth here, gotta love jalapeños too! Ambience is calm and enjoyable w attentive fun service. Papaya salad and summer roll(grilled sausage) were both so refreshing. drinks (wintermelon tea and lychee tea) were both so good. 10/10. Got free shot of viet ice coffee hehe. Pho (beef, spicy beef) had different noodles nd were both so satisfying. Worth it.
I went midday for lunch and had a wonderful meal. The staff was attentive and kind and the restaurant itself was clean. The banh mi was super tasty and the baguette was perfectly crispy. I really enjoyed the iced coffee. I usually find that Vietnamese iced coffee can be overly sweet, but this one was just sweet enough.
The best and most authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Williamsburg. I’m so happy that we found this restaurant. I love their pho, lemongrass chicken, salted chicken and also the summer rolls. Ummmmmmm. Every plate was returned completely empty. My goal is to try every single dish on their menu :-)
Authentic, high-quality, no-frills Vietnamese cuisine made with the freshest ingredients. The broth of their soups are incredible - I got the Bun Bo Hue and it was rich and surprisingly refreshing. Perfect for a cold day. The staff are attentive and very friendly. Great portions and value for the money. Highly recommend.
Đồ ăn ngon quá wow yummmmy……. This place is beyond hidden gem or diamond in the rough. This place blew my mind. I have finally found a true Vietnamese restaurant in nyc/Brooklyn. They stay true to the roots and culture. No fusion no gimmicks straight from love and passion. The food is amazing and taste like how my mom made it growing up in Houston. The grill pork w rice or vermicelli is must order. It is perfect for Brooklyn hot summer nights. The smell when it comes out is mesmerize. It is dripping perfect season and glazed. The char marks is my favorite I like looking at char grill marks. First bite is juicy and knock me off my feet. Fresh summer rollz and pho is on point. Fresh summer roll made fresh on spot not sitting dry. The pho broth is very tasty, full of meaty soup broth medium clear and not greasy. I can tell it’s homemade not no cheap shortcuts fake broth like Chinatown. It was perfect for my morning hangover. And the last dish which I was surprised was Pork bacon and quail eggs. This was amazing taste of super soft pork bacon. It’s was butter smooth and soft meat. Add the Drip sauce over the rice and eat it all together was perfect day. It made my day. The pork banh mi was very good fresh and crunchy w perfect pork season. Pretty much everything here was good and I def be back for more. Shout out to Staffs and manager. They did amazing job and very polite. Main thing I love is good vibe. Good vibe is the most important thing in life. If you in Brooklyn give it a try swing by and see what real Vietnamese taste like. Come get a taste.
I was a little nervous about eating here with my peanut allergies, but front desk person was very knowledgeable on menu and pointed out items on menu that were prepared with peanuts. Had the chicken and tofu bahn mi(separately), I would definitely come back for the chicken bahn mi it was delicious and perfectly portioned.
I recently had the chance to visit a Vietnamese restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the experience was truly delicious. The food was excellent, with well-balanced flavors and very satisfying dishes. The atmosphere was nice and cozy, creating a relaxed and welcoming vibe. It’s worth noting that the restaurant caters more to an American audience. So, while it’s tasty, it might not be the most authentic Vietnamese experience. For something more traditional, I have another spot in Queens, Pho Bang at 82-90 Broadway Elmhurst, NY 11373 Overall, the experience was very positive, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a flavorful meal in a nice setting.
Got a table outside and enjoyed the food so much! High quality meat was used and very good portions for the price. Especially loved the very kind and attentive service despite having one of few outdoor tables. Will be coming back! Jumped on the food as soon as it came but got shrimp summer rolls, vermicelli lemongrass chicken bowl and beef pho :)
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the whole city. The vibes are perfect and not too loud but always pleasant. The food is the best Vietnamese food in Brooklyn and is so reasonably priced and affordable. The waiters are friendly and helpful. There is a sign on the wall that says "High Lua The Best Restaurant" and every time I come here I agree. I've been a customer for 4 years and I hope it never leaves!
Great staff, even better food and a cute space that felt authentic and modern. Most people are used to Southern Vietnamese food so it was a surprise when it turned out to be Northern! The pho broth was excellent and homemade, not the cubed broth flavoring a lot of other restaurants use. The appetizer portions were quite large for lunch and our group realized halfway through that we might have ordered too much! I would definitely return.
My new go-to pho place! Really good! The only place as good if not better than Sao Mei. Noodles thicker than I'm used to but the broth is divine. Love that the spring rolls come with lettuce without asking. Iced coffee was on point too. Can't believe I haven't tried this place sooner.
I came here for their lunch service and had a good time! This cozy restaurant in Williamsburg offers some pretty authentic Viet dishes from noodles to rice to banh mi. They also have really good sparkling Viet drinks and viet coffee! Service here is nice. We got their salad rolls, mi quang, and bo kho with their salted lemonade and coconut cream viet coffee. Everything was great. The mi quang was a huge portion with tons of pork, quail eggs, and shrimp. Meanwhile the bo kho had super tender beef and was very fragrant. Loved my Viet coffee and the salted lemonade was so refreshing. Great spot for some casual Vietnamese food in Brooklyn!
Solid Vietnamese neighborhood. For some reason the pho is lukewarm but they will heat it up if you ask
very good pho! I loved the flavor of the broth-it was slightly sweet but still complex and didn’t need any additional sauce/seasoning. everything else was good too! my only complaint is it’s a slightly smaller portion of noodle than other restaurants, but I don’t mind that too much. would definitely return!
Really lovely staff and atmosphere with nicely plated dishes, but their pho is not the best. I have had both the beef and chicken pho and felt the toppings were a little lacking, and the broth was too salty/sweet without enough meat and bone flavour. The kumquat iced tea was good. I have also had their summer rolls and they were good, but the pho is a miss for me. Update: Changing to 4 stars because I think their vermicelli and banh mi are better. I also had the chicken wings appetizer and it was quite good. Their pho is still just okay for me but their other dishes are better.
Ordered takeout and got the beef pho and summer rolls. This is Williamsburg so higher prices are expected. Beef pho was $17 and summer roll was $10 which came with 2 rolls. Broth in the pho was flavorful and good. I like that they separated the broth and noodles for takeout and that they had jalapenos with the basil and bean sprouts. If you're looking for good Vietnamese food in Williamsburg, definitely give this place a try!
Really nice inside and the food was good. Some portions didn’t match the price point but overall good. Would only come back for the lychee soda and the coffee!
High Lúa is a cozy Vietnamese spot to enjoy in Willamsburg. The food is good but not amazing. The service is friendly and the space is small but well decorated. Something about their vegetable pho didn’t fully hit for me but I still enjoyed the experience and would come try it again. The space is fairly small so not a good fit for large groups.
Cute NYC-inspired ambiance makes this pho spot stand out. The service was friendly and attentive throughout my visit. The chicken pho could use more chicken, and the special beef pho was served a bit cold. Overall, the flavors were decent but not particularly memorable. Worth a visit for the vibe and good service, but pho lovers may want a bit more from the food.
they used to have the best pho in the city (~2-3ya) but my most recent dine in experience was pretty disappointing in terms of the food. the broth we had was really bland in comparison to the sharp lemongrass id taste before. idk what changed; pls I want my fav pho in the city back😭😭😭 really kind, accommodating service compact modern space
Stopped by for a late dinner with my family; but, unfortunately this place missed the mark for me. I must say, the restaurant is cozy and I appreciate how patient the staff was with us. Being that we arrived separately and hung around for a while. However, when we poured our sake, we didn’t notice one of the glasses was dirty. There were several black specks floating at the top. We mentioned it to our server and they just tossed the glass with the sake in it. They strained the rest of the bottle, despite us telling them that it was the glass and not the sake. We weren’t offered a replacement. I had seen on their menu that they had bún bò huê and I was so excited to try it because not many places offer it. When we got our soups, I received a beef pho instead. After seeing how the staff resolved the first issue, I didn’t want to bring up the fact that I received the wrong soup. The beef pho was just okay. My sister ordered a chicken pho which she absolutely loved. When the check came, I was being charged for the soup I didn’t receive. Not sure I’d come back.
pricey and $12 for three spring rolls. the rice dish i got was subpar. only decent one is the regular beef pho
Good service and atmosphere, but I was a little underwhelmed by the food. I ordered the bun bo hue but I think the kitchen might have forgotten to add spice to it (as you can see in the picture, there's no chili or red at all) and there was no spicy taste to it. The onions were a little thick/raw and I was also surprised that the bun bo hue and pho are served with lemon, not lime.
I like to give another place a chance but some time the food I get is less than my expectations. I was in a mood for Nem nướng but seems like only authentic Vietnamese restaurant has this menu. Other than that, even some place claim to have Nem nuong but doesn't look like or close. So, with no choice and willing to make a bet, I order out from this place and try to pick something that close to that dish. - Beef Pho: is just ok, too much noodles and less vegetables that is suppose to have. Broth is good. - Fried Spring Rolls: kind of oily - Banh Mi Pate: doesn't taste good and dry - Sausage rolls: So so and I'm not crazy about the vegetable they put at all. - Caramelized spareribs: the ribs are dry and sauce isn't good. with the price and taste of food I don't think is worth of money. It is just my opinion, maybe non-Asian will like it so if I want to eat real Vietnamese, I still have to go to Queens.
I used to come here a lot more often as my hangover cure. This time was for dinner and it was unfortunately a little disappointing. I ordered the chicken pho and the portions were noticeably small compared to other viet spots in the city. The noodles were surprisingly al dente, which is not my preference. There is def a dearth of solid viet spots in Williamsburg, but would be nice for High Lua to change it up and fill the void.
The service here in my opinion is great. We've had the same server here multiple times who was attentive and excellent. That said, I think I've gotten the stomach bug at least two times from eating here (didn't put it together until my most recent visit). I think they should really take a look at how they handle food as this would easily be 4-5 stars if it was addressed.
Wasn't worth the experience...small portions overpriced, dirty bathroom staff looks overworked... Reviews are 50/50
Ordered pickup during weekday lunch time. Taste was good not sure about the authenticity. Portion looks big but only very few thin slices of beef on top of lots of noodles. That’s a bit not acceptable for the price. Plus the veggie look spoiled (see 2nd pic ) 🤷♀️🤷♀️ that’s a big no no no. Ok with no veggie if not available, but if you gave me the spoiled ones, I’ll doubt how fresh the food could be😕
POC Please read , I work nearby outside 11 hours and it is now cold summer nights this evening I visited this restaurant because I called in to order , when I arrived I asked if I could sit down to eat the restaurant was empty excluding two diners the women looked at me as if I disrespected her than ask the other young women served who fearfully looked at me explaining it’s not allowed, as I went to explain I called in but entended to eat here I work outside and cannot eat pho while standing she went on to soften a bit and said ok but I would have to leave if any guest needed the seat , looking around at the partically empty restaurant my stomach turned i thought I was over analyzing but I looked clearly at the pair firm and now talking in their own language I said forget it paid and then she offered me a bowl seeing that I was insulted I politely declined and my boss let me eat in his car . So take this as you wish the pho was good but bad ppl will change the taste . NOT Eating Here Again staff needs to be trained
I ordered delivery from here based on their good Google reviews. the spring rolls were not sufficiently fried so they were soggy and dripping oil, not crispy at all. the chicken pho was completely lacking any depth of flavor.
We got the a sandwich to go but changed our mind and wanted to stay but they refused to seat us even when there was ample space. :) love the “service industry”.
Unsanitary and multiple instances of seeing roaches have happened reported by diners. I was wondering how such a highly recommended restaurant would have pests. Please read their recent NYC healthy sanitary violations from August 2025, including filth flies and a restaurant not free of harborage of rodents, insects, and pests. Avoid at all costs until they get their act together.
This is the saddest, most pathetic Banh mi I have ever seen. No cilantro, daikon, or jalapeños. No sauce of any kind, not even mayo. And stale bread. I get that it was the end of the day and a holiday, but if you don’t have all the ingredients for the sandwich, don’t sell the sandwich. Never eating here again.
I visited this restaurant based on the positive reviews. However, my friend and I were disappointed to find that the pho soup was quite bland compared to other Vietnamese restaurants we’ve tried. On the bright side, the service was attentive. Unfortunately, the worst part of the experience came after the meal. I experienced a severe stomachache and felt nauseated, forcing me to rush to the bathroom. I don’t think I’ll be returning to this restaurant.
Sadly updating my review after coming here once a week for many months. A cockroach appeared on the counter next to my table, thankfully I finished eating and told the staff but they were totally unbothered and unapologetic. They didn't even kill it. Delicious vegetarian pho been coming here for a few years my fav in the area
The pho here is extremely overpriced for what you get. The portions were shockingly small, leaving us still hungry after the meal. On top of that, the service was slow and unfriendly. What made the experience even worse was the lack of cleanliness. We actually saw roaches crawling on the table, which is completely unacceptable. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone.
