The Swedes Lázaro Cárdenas Reviews
One of our favorite meals of the trip. Excellent food and drinks and even better service. Our waiter was also a bartender and gave us his recommended drinks and they hit the spot. Will definitely be back.
We have never had a bad meal here.
Always visit The Swedes when in PV. We usually stay right up the funicular from the restaurant. Great food and great drinks.
Absolutely amazing. The service was spectacular and the food was equally delicious. Our server was attentive, friendly, and all around top notch. We had the gravlax (first time ever trying it and it was so good!) and both ordered the gorgonzola beef pasta for the main entree. Freaking amazing. Definitely give this a try while you're here.
The place was friendly and the service is great I would recommend coming here after 9 PM when the rush it over. The food was extremely delicious and worth the wait I would highly recommend you order dessert as well I also have the red sangria it was really delicious and has apples on it.
Swedish food in Mexico? I know it sounds crazy, but it’s definitely worth a visit for when you get tired of tacos (if that is even possible). The service is great and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The first floor offers air conditioned space for dining and the second floor features the bar and additional dining. One of my favorite dishes here is the beef tenderloin pasta. If you like blue or Gorgonzola cheese, your head will spin for this rich combination of pasta, beef and sauce. Make this a must visit while in the Zona Romantica neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta.
Excellent meal! The rice wraps were wonderful for an appetizer. The Norwegian salmon was absolutely spectacular! Service was amazing. All of the staff were so friendly and accommodating. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant
The food is amazing, the view and atmosphere are amazing, but above and beyond is the owner Chris.. He's a true champion of the people, even though he hides it. Cannot recommend the Swedes enough!
Stellar service (thanks Juan) and exceptional food. Started with a beetroot salad which was a highlight. Our mains were the Pasta Pesto with Chicken, and Pasta Pesto with Grilled Vegetables. Both were delicious and portions weren’t overwhelming. We sat at a balcony table on the top floor which was perfect for sunset. Highly recommend and would go back. With 1 cocktail, 2 wine with dinner, salad and 2 entrees, our bill was 1485 pesos or about $107 CAD. As long as you don’t mind climbing the stairs, it’s a real gem.

Excelente servicio
We’ve been wanting to try The Swedes for a while after a friend in Denver raved about it, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. It was busy when we walked in without a reservation, but they still found us a table. Everything we ordered was delicious… definitely get the pesto chicken pasta!
I met the owner when he saved me! He helped me put of a jam. I went to eat The Swedes and loved everything about it! The food, the drinks and the staff. Best restaurant in Puerto Vallarta run by a great guy!
Comida fresca y sabrosa, excelente servicio, buena ubicación. Fresh and tasty food, excellent service, and good location.
An excellent restaurant to enjoy a delicious dinner.

Excelente servicio! Rica cena! Super recomendable!
The Swedes is one of our staples when we visit Puerto Vallarta. We love sitting on the upper balcony, taking in the city views, while enjoying a fantastic meal and cocktail. Favorites include the mushroom risotto, lobster bisque, and the pesto noodles! We've had consistently the same servers when we visit and they are warm, friendly, and always a delight to see. Recommended!
We went with a group of 4 to The Swedes and had an amazing experience. From the initial greeting and throughout the meal the staff were friendly and professional and very attentive. The food was excellent! We had drinks and appetisers to start and then on to the mains. The salmon was perfect and the mushrooms risotto with chicken was delicious. The desserts included homemade carrot cake, impossible pie and pumpkin spice ice cream with a leisurely cappuccino. There is an indoor dining room with a/c and an upper open air terrace. We enjoyed a perfect evening on the terrace and look forward to our next evening at The Swede as we will definitely be returning!
We really enjoyed our meal at The Swedes, service was excellent, waiters friendly and attentive. Sat upstairs by the railing so great views. Pork tenderloin was tender and delicious as was the chicken breast deluxe. Also loved the green grape salad… we will definitely be back
WE have loved The Swedes since it opened so many years ago. It's still a place that we will go to at least twice during our two week stays. The new owners were so smart to keep the tried and true menu and atmosphere. Love everything on the menu. Only difference is that the waitstaff seems to change alot vs. how it used to be the same great servers. I still miss Traci!!
Either everything here is great or we just happened to order the greatest hits. The spring rolls & gazpacho were the perfect refreshing apps for a hot PV night. The Cobb salad would give Jonathan Waxman a run for his money (I’ll order it every future visit). The Gorgonzola beef Filet Pasta was also rich and lovely. Ricardo took very good care of us.
We arrived at this restaurant without a reservation, and were kindly seated at the bar. The view is great from the upper level and the Bartender is super friendly. Our server shortly moved us to a table as it became available, despite how busy it was that evening. Our first visit was years ago and during the day. This evening was a treat, the view and the ambiance was spectacular. We ordered the Filet Mignon, and the Chicken Pesto Pasta. The presentation was on point, and I can't thank them enough for accomading us. The food was great, and we will be returning to try more things in on the menu! Thank you for a very memorable Dinner! We loved every bite!
Daniel from Pinnacle 220 highly recommended this restaurant to me and he couldn't have been more fantastic for doing so. Uli at the door was so shy and sweet. He brought me to my upstairs table where it was beautifully breezy and had a view over PV and its people. Alex was my server and he was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I was sure I knew what I wanted from the INCREDIBLE menu until he told me about the special...and I was hooked. Fresh watermelon salad and Nordic salmon over risotto ($21US for both!). See the pics...which don't do it justice. This was as good as any fresh salmon I ever had while in Sweden and Norway. Louis was also a great server and took great care of me as well! I have travelled to dozens of countries, many of which are well known for their culinary expertise. And this restaurant easily lands in my top 5 of all time. Fortunately I live right next door and will be back every chance I get. The entire meal, including freshly made warm olive and rosemary bread with dipping oil (OMG), a generous fresh watermelon salad, my gorgeous salmon entree and 2 glasses of wine was ~$40/US including tip. Please don't miss out on this gem. They truly deserve your business.
Nice little place. A/C on the second floor. Great presentation. On the more pricey side, but the food is very good and the presentation is awesome. We enjoyed all the food. Highly recommend. Total bill was about $25 a person. We got lemonade, pineapple juice, a spring roll appetizer, mahi mahi, steak Gorgonzola pasta, and a passion fruit pie. All tasty!
My partner and I enjoyed our first dinner here so much that we went back again our last night in Puerto Vallarta. And it was even better. Both floors are airy and open but preferred the top floor. Go on Wednesday for 40 peso Cosmos, about $2. Very LGBTQ friendly. Friendly staff. And the food was delicious.
We had a great dinner here. The mushroom risotto was absolutely fantastic with perfectly roasted veggies. The beef filet pasta was the star of the night. It had a delicious cream sauce with a healthy amount of tender steak cubes. Tasty cucumber martini and lemon drop. We would definitely return. The ONLY negative thing was that they only make meatballs as a special on Mondays and they were sold out by 7:30 when we arrived.
The Swedes... Excellent service. Food is wonderful, from Chicken Salad, Lobster Bisque to a pork dish with glass noodles, all perfectly seasoned and tasty. Good selection of wines and cocktails. Good view overlooking a busy area of town one block from the beach. Pro Tip - Air Conditioned during the hot summer months - They take credit cards

Arrived at 5:30 and ordered. We were the first ones in the restaurant. We were finally served our food at 7:00 pm. The chicken pesto was sooo bad. It was dry and without flavor. None of the servers checked to see if we wanted more drinks while we waited 1.5 hours for our food. When asked if my food was not good as I sent it all back, the server laughed. 1 day later In fairness to The Swedes, I just received a very professional note from a manager at The Swedes. He apologized for the bad experience and offered the explanation of what happened that caused the disruption in their record of having excellent food and service. There was an unfortunate situation that left many of the restaurants at a loss of staff as well as supplies. The manager offered his sincere apologies to me in writing and offered a complimentary dinner should I return. I will return to the restaurant but will not ask for the comp meal. I am so pleased to have received the letter. This speaks so many positive volumes about the manager and the restaurant. Thank you.
The Swedes A European owned restaurant with a cute view of old town, we shared the Morgan burger and French fries, medium and it was yummy. The spring rolls to start were great. Cute restaurant and reasonably priced. They were only taking cash the night we were there, so we had to be careful.
At first, I thought: Swedish food in PV? 🤔 But we popped in and were pleasantly surprised. While it is on the pricier side, the food is good. Cosmos are only 40 pesos on Wed. Alex was super friendly and engaging. I particularly enjoyed the bisque and spring rolls (it tasted very fresh). The pasta dish was filling. Definitely worth checking out.
Delicious food. As others have said, it was really nice to have some different flavors besides seafood or tortillas. The tropical salad was delightful, and the chicken with mushroom risotto just scrumptious. My husband had the burger and fries and both were cooked to perfection and tasted great (I stole most of his fries - ha, ha!). Indoors has AC, which also was a nice escape from the heat and bugs. Would definitely go back!
I found this great spot on my way downstairs from my hotel in my first night in Puerto Vallarta and I went for the risotto... I wanted to add Shrimp. No problem. I loved the focaccia. I had one drink. I loved the decor and the company of the bartender I was the only one at the terrace. Anyway bill comes my shrimp was as expensive as the meal. I didn't appreciate that at all. It is not a 5 star amazing restaurant.
Great vibes. Food was meh. Ordered salmon medium well and it came out medium rare. They recooked it and to be fair they were hosting a charity event, so the kitchen may have been busier than usual and less attentive.
Second time coming here. Both times were generally great. The service was wonderful, the food was great (we had steak, salmon and chocolate cake), and the prices were reasonable. When we arrived we were surprised to hear it was cash or Venmo only. Last time I’m pretty sure I paid with credit card (Google shows credit card accepted). I was fine with paying with Venmo. The exchange rate was silly. I know places don’t generally offer great exchange rates but if you’re going to surprise the customer, the exchange rate should be at least reasonable.

Came here many years ago so thought we'd try again as a quiet alternative to the busy places lower down. It was very very quiet and the service although friendly was a little slow. The food was a bit of a let down. To start gravalax which was a bit bland and summer rolls which were mainly grated carrot. Followed by tenderloin and baked potato. Steak was good but the potato was inedible, hard, dry and tasted off. Also had chicken with cheese sauce and mushroom risotto which was a bit too creamy and clashed with the cheese sauce. Didn't stay for dessert. Left disappointed. Feels like a place that needs a kick up the backside.
Feedback on Recent Dining Experience (Customer Service) To the restaurant manager I wanted to reach out regarding an unfortunate experience at The Swedes during my recent visit. I’ve always appreciated the quality and reputation of your establishment, which is why this situation was particularly disappointing. When it was time to settle the bill, our server neglected to use the card placed inside the receipt holder and instead picked up the wrong one, resulting in a full charge to the incorrect card. Mistakes happen, but what made this especially frustrating was the server’s dismissive and rude attitude when the issue was brought to his attention. Rather than acknowledging the mistake and assisting in a resolution, he was unhelpful and lacking in basic courtesy. This interaction left a sour impression on what should have been an enjoyable dining experience at a restaurant that has long been a favorite in Puerto Vallarta. I wanted to bring this to your attention in the hope that steps can be taken to prevent similar situations in the future. I appreciate your time and would welcome any response on how this matter will be addressed to safeguard future diners.
I am giving my honest opinion, as I think it should be. It was late and I didn’t eat, so I went there as it was close to my hotel. I had been sick just 2 nights ago, and I don’t eat dairy, so it was complicated for me to find something on the menu that would be ok for my stomach. I had the grilled porc, and they told me that they could do the potato without cream…. Well I have not been able to eat this potato as I’ve never had to eat a potato that dry… The porc was good but the grilled vegetables, nothing I couldn’t have made at home… I found that it was not worth the price. Back home for this price I can get a very good meal, so I am quite surprised I almost have to pay more in Mexico for not as much quality. While the server has been nice, I really hated the fact that they asked me if I wanted to add a tip and how much, while putting my card in the machine…so that you are stuck with pretty much being forced to give a tip, while this is completely optional. So on top of a high price for medium quality, I paid an extra. Just for this reason I would not go again.
Nice restaurant and ambiance. We were a group of 6 and all ordered either the Grilled Sirloin or Surf and Turf. Let me firstly say the food tasted great and was cooked perfectly. But it took almost 90 minutes from time of order to arrival at our table. Our biggest issue was every single person's food was warm at best with a couple of ours being cold to the touch on arrival. For the second time in my 58 years I sent my steak back to the kitchen. My replacement meal took 15 minutes and was hot and tasted fantastic. I assumed our bill might be adjusted down slightly to compensate for the very obvious issues. It was not, instead we were given two free creme brulee, which unfortunately we're not to anyone taste and barely touched.
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants but my last visit was disappointing. My food came out at room temperature and lacked the flavor and pizzazz I'd come to expect from The Swedes.
I’ve been coming to Svedes for many years, which made tonight’s experience especially disappointing. I ordered the mushroom risotto with grilled chicken and a side salad. The salad was fine, and the risotto itself was quite tasty. Unfortunately, the chicken was not edible — it was extremely dry and rubbery. After our meals were served, the waiter never checked on us. I eventually had to flag him down to show him the chicken and explain the issue. I asked that the additional charge for the chicken be removed since I couldn’t eat it. At that point, the manager became involved, but instead of resolving the situation as offered, he was confrontational, which made the experience worse. This was surprising and disappointing given my many years as a customer.
It was a disappointing New Year's Eve fixed-choice-menu dinner - especially for the price ($6,200 MXN for four), which we otherwise wouldn't have minded. First, they charge a hefty deposit for the reservation, and don't tell you up front that a portion of it is automatically designated as gratuity - before you even experience the service ($2,000 + $400 = $2,400)! Deposit on the seating (meal)? Sure. Deposit on the service? Umm, no. Second, the overall timing of the meal was slow (almost 2.5 hours), which with the right service on such a night might not have been an issue (more on that in a minute). Third, the food was... OK. The presentation was perfect, but we all agreed our entrees (duck, and beef Wellington) were overdone. The duck lovers thought the taste was off. The vichesua soup and the salads were fine, the desserts were so-so. Which brings me to... Fourth, the service was just plain BAD. The server paid little attention to our table and quite a bit more attention to other tables around us. No obvious reason why. Fifth, when it came to paying the bill, it was a debacle. The server had no idea how to split the check in two (which in and of itself they did not mind ) and then apply the deposit to one of the checks, which required a manager to come over, which created an embarrassing situation. Sadly, all in all, we probably won't go back.
I have passed this place on multiple visits to Vallarta and finally went for dinner during restaurant week. The vibe is casual and friendly. On Wednesday they serve cosmos for 40 pesos, and they're strong. The food is well presented but just okay. I wish I could be more positive about this place. A lot of the reviews just don't describe my experience.

Sadly, we wont be coming back after frequenting this restaurant for 10 years. We had a reservation which specifically asked us to choose upstairs or downstairs and arrived early to be told they seated other walk-in clients and we had a choice to wait 40-60 minutes for our table. We were TOLD with a tone of “we can do whatever we want because we are popular” not politely that that we could also wait at the bar. The attitude of the staff to was so arrogant and dismissive. We were told that they would allow parties to sit for 4 hours or more and we just had to accept it. No thank you, while your food is good, your priveledged rudeness to clients isn’t worth it. There are plenty of other good restaurants in PV. We will not return again and frequent restaurants where we are treated respectfully and politely. You are not with the wait or arrogant dismissal. We left. After reading a few reviews after this post, it seems the host has been a problem for a while and clearly the management condones this as your “first impression” of their business, since nothing has changed.
We went for dinner on Xmas eve ! Fixed menu ! Have been there many times always enjoy the food and service. Tonight the dropped the ball . The table next to use came in 30 min after us and got the mail before us. When u drew this to their attention . They were so apologetic!! And wanted to know what they could do to accommodate us. I asked the to wrap up the overs and desert and told them to decide ! They made us pay full Price for a fully ruined evening. Disappointing
PROS - location - welcome CONS - menu options poorly selected - ingredients not fresh - total lack of creativity chef Basically a diner would have been more satisfying. I wanted to give this restaurant a second chance because the first time I went here was disappointing too but it has such a cute location and it’s such a gay friendly place that I wanted to give it a second chance. The location and friendliness when arriving were very positive but then… The menu and the food lacks not only creativity, the quality of ingredients is just very poor. It’s not fresh and you can taste that. I’m truly wondering how it is possible that this restaurant has a ranking of 4 stars and higher. Fishy I eat a lot in restaurants from entry level price points to high end and I can appreciate all categories but this is one of those places that ruins my evening because there is clearly no genuine care about their guests, otherwise they wouldn’t serve low quality meals as they do. For the same price you pay here you can eat like a king at Azafran a few blocks further. I hope that management of the Swedes will wake up and start to invest in their restaurant with their guest I mind, may then they would deserve their ranking.
Miserable experience trying to get a table for dinner. The host inexplicably hated us from the second we approached the restaurant. They seated us at a small table in a bad location (despite the restaurant being practically empty) and the waiter proceeded to berate us while we tried to order. Not sure what it was about us (my husband is Hispanic? we’re a straight couple? we’re American during a tumultuous political time?) that so enraged them. We were forced to flee from the abuse and find another dinner spot. Edit: They’ve just replied and their response outright denies their rude behavior, in a mocking and antagonistic tone. They can’t even attempt to be professional on Google. Laughable! Believe all of their negative reviews — including from long time patrons who felt utterly disrespected. There is something gravely dysfunctional about this establishment. P.S. Nice try attempting to categorize my review as “spam.” Google is smarter than you think. ;)
