Hungry Bear Plattsburgh Reviews
We go there regularly for breakfast. Always great food and friendly service. Large portions, drink refills. Try it. You won't be disappointed.
Their raspberry cream pie is to die for!!! Seriously if it is available, you should try it. They have big portions for pretty reasonable prices; their signature hungry bear dish can last me for two to three meals. They have a classic rustic diner feel. Their staff is always so pleasant too.
Ordered breakfast for 2 during a busy time. Waited 2 minutes for Coffee, and it was was fresh. We waited less than 8 minutes for our order, we were pleased. Boston Cream Pancakes were amazing, didn't need syrup!
Wow! Awesome breakfast! The home fries are huge. And the omelets are amazing. If you want a pancake the size of a spare tire then go here. I highly recommend. The prices are very cheap.
Best home made food, great service, great prices! I had the turkey dinner and it was just like you'd expect at Thanksgiving dinner. A mountain of turkey, masked potatoes and gravey with stuffing, corn and a roll. You better be hungry! A whiteboard full of home made pies, I went for the coconut cream and it was delicious (and huge!)!
Delicious food, friendly and efficient service and great value for money. On Sunday morning they were very busy but we were seated served and fed promptly. Black and blue salad was delicious. Eggs Benedict with home fries was tasty also.
Soooo, let me tell you about my Hungry Bear experience... The food was phenomenally delicious, the service was better than good, and the friendly atmosphere and customers par none. A whole lot of food for not a lot of money. I was beyond pleased. Oh, and did I say I was able to park my semi there too. If, you ever find yourself in and around the Plattsburgh, New York area, do not do yourself the disservice of not grabbing a bite here. It's worth every bit of your time and money. Nuff said!
Instead of doing our usual shopping lunch break at one of the local chain store restaurants, we decided to take a chance and try this little gem. It isn't easy to please my picky crew but this place was a huge hit. My son said its his new favorite place ever. My daughter is already begging to go back. The food is delicious , the prices very reasonable and the service was incredibly quick. The place was packed but the waitresses handled it with ease. Definitely worth the trip!
Stopped in while on a road trip, and it was fantastic!! The server was so kind, very nice. The food came in a timely fashion, and everything was so darn good. That was the best chicken fried steak I've had in my entire life!! The food was amazing, the staff was attentive. All around, a fantastic experience. I love local diners that serve regulars but treat strangers like family, and this was the place!! We will definitely stop in every time we drive through Plattsburgh, NY.
Had a wonderful breakfast here. Pancakes were the size of Frisbees and the home fries were delicious. (say yes to the added onions). The staff were friendly and service was quick. Will be back.
The food was delicious and I definitely got my money's worth. Plus the staff were professional & courteous. I had only a short wait to get my food and enjoyed chatting with a few fellow customers. I'll be going back there again soon !
We were a party of 4 that ate here on Friday, August 11th. I had the daily special of lemon ricotta pancakes, my husband had the BLT, my son in law the vegie omelet. All were delicious especially the pancakes. Bacon cooked crispy and very good. My daughter had the waffle which was dry. Great atmosphere as you can tell a lot of local eat here. Will certainly return!
The food was great, staff was friendly, we even went back for pie 🥧 and 🍰. The muffins we brought home were the biggest I've ever seen and they are delicious! Carrot cake was also a must have= AMAZING! It was a great trip and we are so glad we stumbled upon this little gem! We went for our vaccines and can't wait to go back in 3 wks just so we can stop here again!
Breakfast was very good. Coffee strong and made right. Service was spot on. Prices fair. Nice homey feel. Lots of room and regular patrons. Returned 3 more times for lunch had specials. More than enough served. Do eat here you will return.
Went for breakfast. Waitress was excellent and her suggestions were spot on.
I was up in the area from New Jersey for a wedding in Keeseville. Went to the Hungry Bear for breakfast. Chose the eggs with Corned Beef Hash, it was DELICIOUS!! Flavorful and crisp, omg so good!
I swear some of these reviews are written by jealous competitors. Excellent food, Nicole served us, she is warm, genuine and nice. Place is busier then a one handed wall paper hanger! I'll go again. Very nice!
We stopped here on the way through and we were all thoroughly impressed! We had everything from breakfast meals to dinner meals and it was all cooked so well. The service was fast and pleasant. The restaurant as a whole was extremely clean. The prices are also very good. I would very highly recommend this restaurant!
Very rustic setting. Love the interior of the place. The food is always on point. They open pretty early as well which is great with breakfast establishments. All around great, whether your having a family, business, or even a little romance this place is simple enough to be able to do all three
Quality comfort food with excellent service and an adorable very local feel. The waitress was very cheerful and fun and you could tell most of the customers were regulars. It was a fun and homey atmosphere, great pit stop on a long drive.
We walked into a cozy, almost full restaurant, and were greeted by a very friendly atmosphere and the smell of delicious coffee. My breakfast included pancakes, my favorite. Most places do not serve real maple syrup, this place does. Most places serve a giant cake-like flat cake. Not here. Here it is a delicious real pancake that absorbs the real maple syrup. The eggs were done to perfection as well. Yes, the coffee cup was kept full. ❣
Clean and a huge variety of great tasting breakfast and lunch foods. I recommend the #11 for breakfast. Friendly staff and great coffee
The best burgers, the ny syrup was amazing, very cozy.
Came down from Montreal and decided to try this restaurant. The good was great! Awesome breakfast, super nice service and great atmosphere. It was very busy but we still had gotten our food quickly!
Very fair prices on all the dishes they serve. Servers are polite and accommodating. I have never had a complain with the food here and it doesn't take forever for the cooks to make it. I highly recommend giving this joint a try for breakfast.
This was our first time at Hungry Bear. It was excellent and we highly recommend. Ambiance is very welcoming and country like, service was fantastic and food delish!!! Will definitely be back during next vacation.
Good food and plenty of it, so come hungry! Two fireplaces for that cozy feeling! Nice place to go after church. Senior discount! ;^) Easily the Nicest diner in Plattsburgh! Only open for breakfast and lunch till 2pm. Went for Sunday breakfast and weekday lunch.
I love small places like this, where the locals know each other and sit & chat. I had the spinach, feta & tomato omelette and wasn't disappointed at all. Great prices, lovely place for a quick bite.
Love this restaurant. Im usually here once a week. Great food and the portion sizes are very generous. Great value. The staff is very friendly as well. The Adirondack burger is my personal favorite. :) And you gotta try the home made pies. They're delicious! Just do it. Raspberry Cream is my favorite pie.
This is one of my son's favorite places.Any time We visit our cabin in upstate new york We have to go here. The food is good and the prices are decent. No complaints.
Great place for some good breakfast. They were very nice to customize food for vegetarian.
Great place to eat. Staff is friendly. Great atmosphere. If I lived here I would go there all the time!
Omg my friend said this was the best breakfast place in all of Plattsburgh and she was right the host seated us ASAP the coffee was excellent really fresh not over roasted the blueberry pancakes and bacon tasted amazing our server was funny and checked on us we'll definitely will be going here again.
Breakfast was great, love the atmosphere of this place! Coffee was not the best unfortunately!!
I want to preface my review with a bit of context, if you'll bear (pun!) with me. I have never been to New York before. I'd never even been to the East Coast. (Florida doesn't count.) But my husband is from Buffalo, and after a decade of saying we should visit sometime, we finally did. ... from a born and bred Pacific girl, y'all made me fall in love with your state. I wish I had the space to write all the ways New Yorkers kept on surprising me with how friendly, jovial, and welcoming they are. But this is a review, and I have to keep it brief. On my last day of my stay, after multiple hours of driving and exploring, we were tired. We were headed to Albany to fly home, and wanted something to keep us going through the rigors of an all-day travel plan. And y'all were *perfect*. Just about every combination of breakfast food possible? You had. And lots of it. As well as a thousand ways of combining things, an entire board of available pie flavors, and never-ending coffee. Your hot chocolate was like getting a hug on the inside. And if you wanted lunch? Sandwiches, burgers, you name it - this place has it. The portions were generous without being so enormous I'd get weighed down. Everything was cooked perfectly. The servers were swift and decidedly about their business, but without sacrificing warmth. If I could remember her name, I'd give our server a special shout-out for being understanding of my tired-traveller word-salad when she was taking our order. The whole establishment is a warm, richly "homey" vibe, and I wish we could have stayed longer. ... that said? I'll be back. Y'all are the *best*. Much love from Oregon. Keep being awesome, Hungry Bear. ❤️
Went for the first time yesterday and with was very good. Great service and good food. Would go again.
Food was fantastic. The atmosphere was very pleasant and homey. Service was prompt and efficient. Absolutely recommended.
I was in Plattsburgh for an appointment that was cancelled and decided to go to the Hungry Bear for breakfast to make something out of the trip. I picked the place for the name, and I was not disappointed in the food! I had been craving a chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy and both were absolutely delicious. The service was friendly, the coffee was warm, and it was great to hear the conversations with regulars in the background. The Hungry Bear has good food and a great atmosphere; it's exactly what I was looking for in a breakfast spot!
Amazing little restaurant for a breakfast! Cozy place with a fire, food is good, price is good and service is super quick! Totally recommend!
During an impromptu overnight stay in Plattsburgh, we stopped at this restaurant for brunch on our way home—and it turned out to be a delightful find. The space is clean, cozy, and welcoming, making it an easy place to settle in for a relaxed meal. The food was excellent, with generous portions that offered great value for the price. Two meals, along with coffee and a juice, came to just $35. The homemade bread was a standout—fresh, delicious, and a perfect complement to our dishes. Service was equally impressive. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home throughout the visit. Overall, it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. We’d gladly return the next time we’re in the area.
Traveling from out of town, I wanted to try a local breakfast diner. I had the omelette and it was one of the best I’ve had in a while. Service was impeccable. One of the locals behind me gave great suggestions on choices.
First time visit. We had a great lunch and we will return when in the area. Looking at other meals as they passed by us looked equally delicious. Serving sizes were big, I brought half my wrap home. The restaurant had a cozy feeling and our service was friendly. My only negative is the floor could use a better cleaning, around the edges were cruddy. The bathrooms were clean, again it was the floors.
We were a large party of 15 that showed up with no advance notice and were welcomed very warmly by the staff. Our waitress was excellent and delivered all of our orders promptly and correctly. She was pleasant throughout our meal, refilling coffee and water glasses. The food was delicious and it was a very positive experience. Highly recommended.
My wife and her friend took my toddler for lunch today. They were happy... until a flock of Karen's sat down near them. They berated my wife and her friend, AND my son who has mild autism. They discriminated against my wife's friend for being from Quebec despite speaking perfect English. The staff asked nicely over and over before ejecting the Karen's. My familys lunch was comped and staff couldn't be more apologetic and helpful. The world is healing from toxic people and the Hungry Bear is a great example of a business putting customers, not profit, first.
When I showed up here the place was completely packed but it was a holiday weekend so that was to be expected. I was resigned to the fact that it was going to take forever to get seated and I was wrong. The friendly staff quickly found us a table of someone who had just left and cleaned it and had us seated in just a few minutes. I figured where things is busy as they were it was going to take forever to get our food, nope wrong again. I couldn't believe how fast the food came out. The quality of the food was great and it certainly wasn't overly expensive. All around it was a fantastic experience and I definitely look forward to going back again.
Breakfast may be the easiest meal to do well because it's hard to meet up the basics (eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc). But this place goes the extra mile and does everything really well! The potatoes were so individually crispy it's like they fried them one at a time! The toast was noticeably thick, fluffy and tasty. Everyone in our party loved their dish. So many options to choose from!
This place is great, always pleasant when I visit. It in some ways like a diner, but much more personal. I have tried everything from hot turkey to liver and onions, many of the various fresh baked pies, it's all been great. I know Plattsburgh isn't a big town, but if you happen to find yourself there, be sure to check it out. They do close like 2pm, so not a dinner place, but fantastic for breakfast or lunch..
Great, cozy restaurant. Service was fast and friendly. We had a bit of everything and it was all good. My daughter got breakfast (served all day) and I stole one of her sausage links...a real link, with natural casing cooked to perfection. I had a great burger and my other daughter had a cheesesteak with peppers and onions. The roll for the cheesesteak was perfect...one of the keys to a good sandwich! The French fries were really good and fresh as well. All in all, this was a great spot for a filling and tasty meal of comfort food, prompt service, and very good value.
Food and service were amazing, unfortunately very tight area, so seating is very close.
Stick to the breakfast and dessert menus. Those are the good parts. I'm not particularly fond of the lunch/dinner fare. Staff is friendly, but sometimes the service is a bit slow. The prices and portion size make up for it.
A great restaurant especially if you're looking for breakfast any time of the day! Ate eggs, bacon, potatoes, french toast, hash and oatmeal. Everything was as you would want it. I've had much better hash and french toast, eggs are eggs, bacon is ok, oatmeal was good potatoes were above average. Menu selection was very complete and portions were medium to large. Overall a slightly above average local breakfast place that I would visit again.
Servings are quite large. Food is tasty. Atmosphere is pleasant. Not a big fan of the home fries, they're okay but feel something's missing.
Nice staff, good food. Very accommodating for my messy and hangry 1.5 year old. We went during lunch on a slower day. Biscuits and gravy is bomb and pancakes are huge! I also really love their bear bowl! Fries not so great when we got fish and chips. They were brownish... other than that, very yummy!
Tucked away on a side street away from the main town of Plattsburgh, the Hungry Bear is clearly a local favorite. Set in what appears to be a reconstituted log cabin that has since expanded, this diner offers some classic breakfast dishes where you simply mix and match what you'd like (eggs, pancakes, meats, etc...). For our meal we had the veggie omelette (very good) and Combo Ten (Biscuits with Sausage Gravy and Eggs...really very good with tasty gravy and good ole biscuits) with coffee that I found a like on the weak side. Service was good overall and our waitress was friendly though not always present (I think they may have been short staffed given the number of patrons versus waiters on the floor). There is a main room and a small annex with a large cutaway window looking into the main room. We sat in the annex where the air conditioner was blasting away making it quite cold...slight bummer. Also, the annex area is not frequented as much as the main room so do your best to sit there. Enjoy!
It's always a bit loud when we go, and always a bit crowded and cramped. Other than that, it's a good place. I really don't like the way they make their burgers/beef, but I know that's a personal preference. They have delicious quesadillas!!
This rustic off the beaten path place is a locals paradise, much better than the chain restaurants. You get a lot of food for the money and it is excellent too. The wait staff was on the ball and very good. I totally recommend this restaurant for when your around the Plattsburgh area.
Busy, but INATTENTIVE STAFF. Waited for promised syrup until pancakes were nearly cold. Waited to get coffee with my cup on the edge of the table for 10 minutes. They had plenty of time to wrap silverware and chat, but payed very little attention to the customers
Rating bumped from three to four stars, after a particularly lovely service experience at The Hungry Bear. This is a basic diner. The atmosphere is casual. The service is fine. You can get breakfast all day. The menu has plenty of options, and they run regular specials. I wouldn't recommend the waffles, though--I'm pretty sure mine were toaster waffles. They offer a wide range of desserts, and I haven't figured out if they are coming right out of a box, or if they are made onsite, using prefab crusts and fillings. Either way, this isn't a French bakery; it's more like a truck stop.
A rustic diner that specializes in breakfast. The staff is sweet, the place tends to be quiet and the prices are great. The crowd is older blue collar families so it's definitely not a hipster place. We always have breakfast here at least once any time we visit.
Come as you are for breakfast or lunch. No frills and no pretension. Simple good food. Come and make new friends.
The sandwich was good, the waitress was super-friendly, and the service was speedy. The shoestring fries are just okay, and the dining area is small, but it was still okay. People were in and out pretty quickly, so you should have no problem finding a seat. I would go again.
Two of us had the biscuits and sausage gravy. Biscuits were quite large with plenty of gravy on top. Gravy wasn't the best I've had (needed more seasoning), but did the trick. Had it with eggs also. My over easy were cooked correctly. The other person had oatmeal and a fruit cup. All in all it was a good breakfast for a reasonable price. Service was good.
Small inside but seems to always have a table ready. Parking is easy. Sometimes the food can take a bit of time to come out. However the food is delicious and the staff is wonderful.
This is the place to go when you seriously need a huge, filling breakfast! The portions here are ginormous, and the prices are super reasonable. I ordered an omelet (the "Mountain Man," I think?)—everything was cooked great, exactly what you expect from a classic diner. The service really shines—the staff is so friendly, attentive, and keeps the coffee flowing. The atmosphere is bustling and a little loud, but that just shows how popular this spot is with the locals. Bottom line: This place lives up to its name. Highly recommend Hungry Bear for a classic, hearty, and satisfying breakfast in Plattsburgh. You'll leave stuffed and happy!
We've eaten here a few times while visiting family. The food is good, not too expensive, and the service is great. My husband likes their biscuits and sausage gravy. I had a really tasty Kitchen omelet, and the last time I ordered the Combo Eleven. Ham, bacon, sausage, peppers, onion, mushrooms, tomatoes, home fries, cheddar cheese scramble. It was delish! Coffee is included with meals.
We came from CA, visiting, and hoping to catch this gem after brunch. FYI, 12:30 on Sunday they were closing for the day.
I'm disabled, in a power wheelchair, and this place... listed as handicap-accessible... was a destination for me during my visit to Plattsburgh. Getting in the door was the first problem: While there was a ramp up to the entrance, the threshold was a bit high and caused my chair to "jump" over it. Once inside, I noticed that it was very loud... like a subway platform at rush hour. In my 72 years I've been in a lot of diners and restaurants, and this was the loudest I've been in. It took quite a while to place my order after I was "seated" at a table I could roll up to. I noticed that the bathrooms were not accessible to my chair, the doors needed to be easy-open and at least 36" wide for ADA. I need to be able to turn around inside the bathroom. When the food arrived, it was good enough, and decent quantities. But, and something that turned me off, was that the meal was served on plastic plates, plastic bowls, plastic coffee cups. The utensils were at least metal. The only thing worse for me at any diner is to find them serving hot coffee in paper cups. Plastic chemicals can leech into hot foods. After my meal, it took a long time to get the staff's attention to get my check. I gave up on asking for an extra napkin, and took one from another table. I really wanted to like this place... I love stopping at diners and smaller restaurants like this. But I can't recommend the Hungry Bear. I visited Monday, July 16th, about 8:00 AM.
I usually have a great time and great meal here. This time I waited 40 minutes for my burger and it sucked. Point blank period. I am also very disappointed that they do not have toothpicks at the front desk. It’s a damn shame. Then my dumb roommate ate all my sucky fries.
Not super impressed!!! With all the reviews, we were expecting more…. Bacon and waffles were cold, “rare” steak was well done… strangely, the cinnamon swirl was salty! Staff seemed very tired. I don’t think we’ll go back! It’s not horrible, but for the amount we paid, we were clearly expecting more!
A breakfast and lunch spot made popular by the locals. It's reasonably priced and have great portions for a hearty meal. I would try it again for different dishes or simply to have a warm breakfast. The steak seems to lack proper marinade, seasoning and was quite tough. Choose rare if you want medium. Eggs and home fries are cooked well. Definitely a worth a visit if you are looking for a quaint local place to eat without all the fuss.
Had chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, and neither flavor stood out enough. Not bad, not delicious. Home fries were good and crispy, hash looked and tasted like canned hash. Chicken and Waffle sandwich was pretty good. Same sausage gravy you would expect at a diner. Waffle was fluffy, got pretty soggy towards the end because of all the gravy. We dont care much about service quality, but they never came to check on us. Took 10 minutes after finished eating to receive the bill.
Service is fantasticand fast and food is okay but I could tell that some is frozen or canned and heated. The sausage gravy tastes and looks exactly like Sam's Club's canned sausage gravy. Same with the corned beef hash. Good prices, big portions, but I'm not homemade. Noise is a bit much. Not the restaurant's fault but a group of women behind us were excessively loud and we got to hear every detail of their drunken night and hangover suffering.
Not what it used to be!!! Prices went up, quality went way down! Food poisoning from the hot turkey sandwich... served rancid, old peanut butter pie slice to take home. Don't know why they had to go and change their menu and everything else around, they had a great thing going. Quality has gone down way too low to justify their new prices. Sad they had to go and ruin a good thing.
Man. I really wanted to like this place. All the good reviews made it sound perfect. Im still new to the area. Working on finding those gems I’ll include into my daily. I try not complaining. I really do. BUT: my coffee mug was dirty; 2 different places it looked like there was still food the didn’t wash off all the way. - I had to ask for my own water. The biscuits were pretty dry. The gravy was a little on the colder side. - Sadly. I’ll probably find a different diner to fill the breakfast needs in my life moving forward.
Went there Sunday 6/4/23. Got to the restaurant around noon and sat at a table and waited for someone to come round and wipe our table. After around 10 minutes someone came round. The family in front of us left, two tables on either side of us left and a table behind us left. We got our menus and ordered our drinks, an appetizer and our food. We watched a man and woman come in and sit at a table on our left side and two men took the table in our right side, a family of three took the table kiddy corner to us, a group of three took a table a head of us and two older ladies took the table by the special board that a gentleman and his lady left. We placed our order first. We had fried mushrooms, my daughter had a chocolate chip pancake, my husband ordered a burger and I got the parfait special. We watched as the couple to our left received their breakfast tacos, the family in front be served their food, the men next to us receive their food, the family kiddy corner receive their food while we sat and waited. We finally received our meals around 1pm almost an hour after we sat down. My husband and I were discussing paying for our drinks and mushrooms and canceling our food order since we had waited so long. We then received our food, which again was a pancake, burger, and parfait, nothing complicated or warranting an hour. I firmly believe they forgot us. The two older ladies that came in around 30 minutes after we came were given their food right after we got ours. We won’t be going here again and believe we should’ve been given some kind of discount since we got to sit and watch 10 people who came in after us get their food before us and 2 people that around a hood while after us receive their food at the same time we finally received ours.
Well not sure what happened to the service here... guess if mom and I were men, service would have been better as we witnessed the time we were there. Food was OK. Had plain bagel egg sandwich that tasted like onions. Mom's scrambled eggs looked and tasted over cooked. Asked for grape jelly from Nicole and was given a very rude "yup". Just not good food or service. Especially service.
I am sure the food is fine, but we never got to try it. We sat down waitress asked if we wanted coffee we said yes please we waited over 20 minutes and the coffee still didn't come. Took that as a sign of things to come.OR NOT TO COME. so we left. Maybe there were just super busy that morning. O well. Looked nice inside though.
Stopped in for pie because it looked so yummy, but it was so disappointing. Tasted like the most mediocre store-bought crust on the blackberry pie. The key lime tasted good for a few bites (though lacking that thicker more authentic texture), but was smothered in what appeared to be Cool Whip. I mostly didn't eat that part but we still felt sick and disgusting the whole day. Cool Whip is not food, it's an awful chemical concoction that you shouldn't try to pass off on people. Makes me assume the ingredient quality is pretty poor, not what I'd hope for from what seemed like a nice homey breakfast place. At least the price was cheaper than expected.
First they didn’t want to seat us, then took forever to take our order! Once the order was placed, they gave me a bagel that was visibly molded, and when I mentioned it to the waitress she didn’t seem surprised, just surprised that I said something. The fruit cup was full of fruit that was warm and clearly not fresh. My boyfriend was served a raw pancake! I was able to get a picture of the pancake but not the bagel being that she grabbed it as I was talking to her about it! After seeing the reviews I’m shocked people actually like this place! Of course we’d never go here again, but to make others aware, I’m sharing my experience experience at this dump!! Stay away from here!!!
Waited 40 minutes for food. People who arrived after us were served before us. Food came to the table cold. Eggs were not sunny side up (overcooked), pancakes - tough - you couldn't cut them with a fork and still a hard time with a butter knife, sausage was extremely dried out.
