Guatemalteca Van Nuys Reviews
Love it. Tamales are really good. I tried the mole and the bread is delicious. The girls are a lil clue less but the place is very busy so I understand. Nice clean place for the family
I love the food and the groceries they sell but they need more people working or a faster service. It's always full before they close or on wknds. The prices have been getting higher and the quality still the same.
Awesome place to taste and enjoy Guatemalan food. Its oncredible how they are able to replocate the true Guatemalan flavor.
Very good food at respectable prices. The only downside is the wait. They have help but for some reason they can't get the orders out fast enough. I blame it on their Chipotle styled food system.
The food was so yummy, I went a couple of times and enjoyed it every time. The only thing is the ladies working there don’t seem to be very nice, other than that it was good.
👩🏻🦳Went to buy 36 Guatemalan tamales for my Mamasita funeral service for this weekend and they didn't have any at the time so they told me to wait one hour for them to be ready😏 thank God i didn't need them till Saturday so I order to have them be picked up for Thursday since I don't need them till Saturday👌 and I got some dinner for us to eat and it was like my Mamasita home cooking😋 Service was okay just because it wasn't busy and it took a bit to get our food to go🤷🏼♀️ but the server's are very friendly and helpful especially because I don't speak Spanish very well when ordering food🍛 overall it was a good experience 😊
First timer and I'm hooked, everything was so good but I especially loved their 'popusas' and their 'rellenitos'. I'm so happy this place isn't too too far from me and that it has clean seperate restrooms inside for both men and women.
This place always hits home, in my opinion. From breakfast to the lunch menu, there's someone for your appetite. Also the bakery and small market they have adds to more of the reason I love visiting this spot.
Love the food. Wait time can be long but food is quick unless they need to prepare something that they have ran out of. Similar buffet style, u pick n they serve. Green sauce is good and spicy. Hilachas are tasty. Platanos are good with crema and beans. Prices are good for what u get.
Loved the food everything’s so good!!!!
We stopped here before catching a train out of Van Nuys since we had some time to kill. There was a very long line of people, which moved somewhat slowly. Once we ordered, our food came out very fast. There are some workers who speak English, but everyone spoke Spanish primarily. Overall, it's a great spot for food, but if you're in a time crunch it might be best to go elsewhere. If you've got time, definitely worth it to check out!
Nestled near the Amtrak station, it's a great place to get a a quick bite. Here is fast food that tastes nothing like the well known franchises that surround it. Rich with flavour and rich with a sense of community. Thought there's a queue, don't be dismayed as it moves quickly. Yes the food is that good. The staff are friendly, helpful and patient even when an Australian tourist, such as myself, destroys the pronunciation of the menu board.
There aren't many Guatemalan restaurants/ bakeries in LA so for people that are part of the Guatemalan community, when we find somewhere that sells our food it tends to get crowded. This bakery is the San Fernando valley branch. There are two other branches that I'm aware of in the heart of LA. The food is good the pandulce our sweet bread is great and I love that they have a little section for imported goods. The ladies working the counter are quick. Just be aware that people tend to overspend there. I know I do, I mean seriously. How often do you find our Guisado, our chow mein, tamales, pan francis and expect to leave with so little so people buy a lot, it makes the already long lines longer. Best time to go is for lunch, you'll still wait in line but the line won't be out the door. If you're just trying it out avoid going a few days before Xmas the line will take hours. This is true for the other 2 spots as well 😉
The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. Service was respectful and helpful. So many dishes to choose from. Also, the bakery had all the best items.
Bathrooms need more attention. Building is damage, not good atmosphere. What's wrong ? We are latin people, good service and good atmosphere talked for itself. But sadly this place was good at the beginning.. but now. Needs new vision
All ways a good place to eat and reminds me of my lovely Guate
The food is authentic and quite savory. Indeed, it can get quite busy so there is a wait time average of 10-15 minutes. It is worth the wait! Do not forget to make a visit to the bakery side. You will enjoy the variety of sweet breads they have to offer.
First time there. Parking was easy, there was a line but it went very fast. All the food looked amazing but I went here for tamale's, because of some article that said they have some of the best tamales in LA and I agree they're really good. I'll be back for the other food.
The closest you can get to Central American food and snacks is a bit pricey, but trust me, it's so worth it! It's just absolutely delicious .Just come on by and try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
Great food, the bread is delicious
Best bakery in town, the restaurant side is also great good food
Food is always good and also the sweet bread.
This place has a line for most of the day. We had a tamale, Chile relleno, and atole de elote. Everything was delicious! The tamale was moist and meaty, I would definitely order that again. The Chile relleno was stuffed with a beef paste with veggies. The atole de elote was sweet and absolutely amazing. It was my first time trying Guatemalan food. I would drive 40 miles again for this place.
La señorita que nos atendió hoy muy amable me dijo que se llamaba Alba deberían contratar más muchachas así con excelente atención y rápida para atender algunas son muy enojadas y pésimas
Was looking to buy a cake but was told they do not sell full sheet cakes only sweet bread , single serving, great selection, best cheese cake and tamales ever.

This place will take you back if you're Central American. You don't have to be, but if you are you're definitely going to be taken back to your mother country. Guatemalan, Salvadoran, Honduran, Nicaraguan, or Belizian. Food is typical of these countries. The place gets packed. I honestly don't know if there is a right time to go. It's always busy. The line moved pretty quick, but for a hungry person, nit quick enough. No matter where your from, you'll enjoy the food and baked goodies.
I come here a couple times a month because the food amazing the only thing is since they have really good food here especially on the weekends it gets very packed and busy so it has longer waiting periods but it is worth the wait and my family loves it here.
It's a good food . But the service could be faster if they be more organized , also the parking in rush hour not so good. But like I said the food delicious. Buenisima
The food is great, the bakery is great, service in general is fine, they could make check out more efficient. Most of the time it takes forever to pay if you buy from the restaurant. Checking out at the bakery is fine though.
Nice family atmosphere. Dinner was quick with a good home made taste. I didn't get a chance to try the bakery, the line was very long. I'm guessing by the amount of customers the bakery must be good.
I love the food. Just that employees and management need to stop scolding each other in front of the customers . 🙄
Good service with great food
Love this place best Guatemalan food So many choices and very authentic come early cause there is usually a line And the parking may be packed but someone is always ready to go so just wait around for a spot patiently. The bakery and mini market is awesome (Guatemalan) But eat your bread quick cause it does harden fast since.
Servers need paid more attention customers I see some of them work some waste payroll
Really busy all the time but that’s cause the food is delicious & the people are friendly
I visited this place on a Sunday at noon, it was a little bit busy but the line moved quick. They have a pretty big decent menu, mostly guatemalan food but you could also find salvadorian food. The service was fast considering they were busy. The food was good, I had no complaints about it. The only thing that bother me was the fact that since it was busy, it was hard to find a seat to eat there and the tables were dirty and we had to ask a lady to go clean our table. Overall, good service buffet style where you can build your own plate just in case you don't see anything you like from the menu.
I've never tried the food here but I heard it's very good and just like Guatemalan food should taste. I've only bought bread from here and was very delicious. There is always a wait here but that's ok it's pretty worth it. The employees seem to need better training for they all look lost.
Delicious food, this time I tried the Hilachas plate and it was a bomb.
Friendly staff and food is great. But the restaurant needs a renovation and looks old

Great for lunch down the street, reminds me of a Guatemalan portos! The pan con pollo is a great, cheap snack/light meal. Simple and filling!
The food is great however the service is horrible. They need a better organization so that the food line and bakery line flow better. I waited 30 mins plus for my order to be prepared to go. \n\n\n…
Their cheese changed a few years ago and it does not taste good it reminds me of stinky feet tastes like puke they had the regular cotija cheese before their atol de arroz is so good I love the rest of their food minus a few issues they've had
It’s super busy, a lot of people there. But there is little to no space to park at, people don’t even park correctly and take up spaces. Location bad, but the bakery part was great. Did not have any food from the restaurant side.
The food tastes great, but they don't cook their beef to the point where it shreds easily as traditional guatemalan dishes typically do, resulting in tough chewy meat. (Hichalachas/Carne guizada)
Normally I love this food, but lately it's quality is making me rethink coming here. Today the food was salty, pork rinds? Kind of stale, I come from San Beranardino county, because I miss Guatemalan food, but hopefully they will improve for next time..Next year!!
Had ordered my take for bread and the cashier was not checking the bags of bread and charging people for other peoples bread on top of what they had chose. I had mine sold to some other lady without knowing until the cashier started calling people after me. Once they fixed my order I was still ripped off one they got my order of bread wrong when they tried to fix it and 2 they charged me more while missing a fee amount of bread that I had purchased. Overall you guys need to train your staff more and to be more aware of their customers orders. I love the bread here and especially atole de elote that's is why I give it 3 stars.
The space is relatively clean. Customers self-bus tables, but no one seems to come and wipe the tables down regularly. All the employees only spoke spanish on the day I was there... Normally not a big problem as I have some minor Spanish language skills (working on it!) but there was no attempt to help in communication. The servers I was with were impatient with my lack of Spanish-speaking ability. Hehe! The food was pretty good, however, especially for cafeteria-style food kept in warming pans. The small bakery had some great confections as well!
Food taste ok the bad thing is that now the portions are small and the prices are high. I remember 2 years ago everything was well portioned worth the money. Sad that now many restaurants focus on money more than quality and quantity.
Good food but I wish some of the staff spoke English since it’s difficult for my husband to communicate. Please enlist this wonderful restaurant for DELIVERY cause aint nobody got time to wait in line thanks🙏
I was hoping this place would be good. I've definitely tried much better Guatemalan food. I feel like this place is commercialized and made in bulk. I believe that affects quality. The line was long. I waited probably around 30-40 minutes before it was my turn to order. I will probably skip this place next time I want to eat Guatemalan food. I know there's better for sure. The store is nice and the bread on the bakery side are pretty good.
Food is good, the people in line are rude and cut in. The staff doesn’t care. So expect a longer wait time. Expect peto park in accessible parking without an accessible parking placard.
I've tried authentic Guatemalan food. The food here is a good, but not the best. Tamales are usually pretty good. We do go often since not many Guatemalan options in the area. However, the service is horrible. The ordering system they have at the food counter is completely inefficient and unorganized. It takes way too long to order food even though most of the food is already prepared. You can easily wait 30 minutes with less than 20 people in line. And forget about coming on the weekends. We routinely see people walking out when they see the lines. Overall I recommend it when it's not busy.
I've been here before and the food was great, however this last time the black beans were extremely salty. They really missed a mark on that one. Maybe I'll ask for a sample next time before I actually make a purchase.
I called to try and save time and order ahead..the lady says they don't do that..but it would be nice if they did because the people that work there are inefficient. When taking orders. They don't get your whole order they run back and forth for each item...hope this feedback is helpful to the management team so they can develop a better process.
Good food, slow and unfriendly service, especially when they are about to close, the cleaning lady is really unfriendly and rude, and the servers are not the exception either. Bathrooms where not stocked, missing seat covers but they were clean. They also have a small food market with Guatemalan favorites like traditional snacks, instant coffee, candies, etc. And also a bakery obviously, which seems to have good variety of sweet rolls(pan dulce) I really do not recommend the place since there are so many like this, you can probably find the same exact food with friendlier and faster service and maybe even closer to your area. I'm definitely trying this bakery but in another location cause they do have good food.
The food here is delicious and authentic, with flavors that really reflect traditional Guatemalan recipes. That said, consistency can be an issue — sometimes items are slightly overcooked or undercooked, and portion sizes vary depending on who’s serving. As someone with a bit of social anxiety, I don’t always feel comfortable asking for adjustments, which can make the experience hit or miss. Still, the taste keeps me coming back. When it’s on point, it’s honestly some of the best comfort food around.
Perfect, you find bread, food and some tipical items from Guatemala. I love the taste of their bakery and also their food, so if you are looking for a place to indulge your paladar this is the right place. I’m home now and bringing a star down because a big disappointment on the pineapple empanada I was expecting real pineapple jalea, but instead they are using the caned stuff the resulting flavor is just a $0.50 bread you find in any market all over LA. If you are from Guatemala you know what I’m talking about.
I visited your restaurant yesterday, and as always, the food and atmosphere were great! I've been here several times and really enjoy coming back. However, like on previous visits, there was quite …
It was ok. I know they can do better than that. I seem some tension with the employees behind the counter. I really don't care for it. But when your dealing with customers and so visible it's not good for business.
This place was a mess. Rude ass ladies serving your food also very messy and the cashier. Well her she was taking other peoples order instead of just charging. I literally waited 20 minutes after ordering my food to pay. While my food was just sitting on a plate getting cold.
I'm been coming to this place for years, just have to say, that the service is becoming really bad, also the wait of time is ridiculous, 4 people ahead of me, and I have to wait 35 minutes, also the food is not the same not more. The arroz con leche is just sweet not favor, just sugar, I can't believe the prices are going up but the qualitie of the food and service is going down hill.
Poor service, took 45 minutes to just get a pan con frijole. The bathroom was not hygienic, 2 toilets were out of service and 1 had vomit. There wasn’t even soap in the dispenser, how could the employees wash their hands.
Always the same atmosphere, the ladies are always in a bad mood, portions are small, bathrooms are uncleanly, no seat covers and no paper towels. This place is definitely not up to the hype. Food isn't always fresh. Just sitting on the buffet line all day I've eaten here several times. Definitely not. much improvement.
Love the guatemalan food. Opens early as 5.30 am. Recently I see that they need to add 02 more cashiers, line takes 45 minutes to get my order. Plus 15 minutes to get huevos rancheros. Organize better your place. Make sure by 5.30 am you have food to serve. I appreciate the effort but need to improve customer service.
I always come here to get Guatemala traditional sweet bread, but today I was so disappointed because there was not enough bread that even the lady told me that I can only get $3 dollars of bolillo, I mean I'm so happy to always see this place crowded but to deny more of their products it's just sad, they need to make more and more of their delicious bread specially during the evening and when the weather is cold, everyone rush to buy bread even during a hard day of work people stop by and to get this kind of service, not fair.
Food was great but my experience was ruined by the customer service skills of the manager. Not polite at all. Was murmuring things as she walked away and when asked why she was acting this way her …

I specifically said I dis not want to pay extra for sour cream for the food and rellenito I had ordered. A gentleman standing next to cashier said to give it to me...i again said I did not want to pay extra for sour cream. I later looked at my bill amd they charged me for sour cream. I feel disrespected. Food was a bit bland and service non-existant. Go elsewhere.
The Manager owner Gerardo is too greedy ; no coupons, no discounts, no SPECIALS of the day , Nothing the people go there to eat just because of the name to help(supposedly) or remember Guatemala otherwise they would not. The Owner Manager Gerardo does not give any training or incentives to the workers ; he does even care to teach the name of the food or bread to the non-guatemalans workers .The taste of the food is just 70 percent close to the originally t Guatemalan food .
Terrible service ... they tell u to clean ur own table , they make u wait in line forn1/2 hr before they serve u , bathrooms where not clean or stock with soap or paper .... Supervicer didnt know how to attend the customers .. doent knownhow to manage her employees. ... that place is a mess
Food is good ,but very poor service. They took an hour to help me out with only 5 people ahead of me in the line , those people seem to not care about their customer.
Worst customer service ever. The food is also bland ,and the lady's don't ask you what size you want your drinks. They will automatically give you the large size even though there are options for you to choose from .
OMG 95% of females working there are not polite , they ignore you when you want to order And the manager is like the rest of them very cocky I give it Cero stars. Most of their food is salty most of the times that is why I ask for a sample.
This place is absolutely awful. The cleanliness in this place is so bad. The quality of the food is even worse. Always finding hairs in the rice, beans, and meats. Please don’t bother visiting.
Poor services, long lines, little girl manager rude as it gets, I was standing in front of her ready to order and she moves to the people behind d me on the line asking who's going to order, unbelieveable! People asking me if they could order for me they saw what happened. All crowded expensive parking. Last time I visit a third world country restaurant fir beans and eggs.
Food and bakery are ok in flavor, price very high. Customer service is terrible, mostly from a lady with green eyes. She used to be nice when she was a regular employee, now that she is in charge she is very rude and arrogant. Not too long ago I was in line when I witness how she mistreated the other employees, yelling at them. Last time I was there to purchase bread I asked to have couple of tamales to go and she told me in a very rude manner that she couldn't serve food, since there is another separate section to do so; a very long line that is aleays slow as heck. However, I did not say much and after finishing my purchase I went to place myself in line to get the tamales. I was very dissapointed when I noticed that she dispensed coffee, fountain drinks, and an ítem from the food section to a man that stood behind me in the line specifitly for bread purchase, according to the lady. I got really mad and left without any tamales. This is not my first time buying food from this location, but by far this is the most upsetting one.
This is place is good when is running with the right people.. last time I went may 27, 2017 the food was bad. I went and spend over $40.00 food was cold and tasted nasty. I went back to tell the SUPERVISOR SANDRA. She told me to wait for 2 minutes. I asked her why do I have to wait. She said she was going to put the food in the microwave to warm ot up. I told her I pay good money to eat fesh made food not to eat microwave food. I asked for my money back and she give it to me with an attitud. She didn't check the food temperature or do anything about it. Before I left she was eating over the food which that consider inappropriate specially if she is handling food. I don't recommend to come in the afternoons since this is my second time experiencing this bad service. I hope no one gets sick eating food in the danger zone of contamination. I called the owner he never call me back. I think he doesn't care.
Every time I go there is always the number of workers and all of them are lying down, before they received with a greeting now nothing to do, since they changed personnel, all changes there should go back to the people who were before. They look for parojas but they are not educated by the food, nothing to see as before the same recipe for stewed meat with that of hilachas el pepian nothing to do with pepian the tamales always come out burned, the owners should pay more attention to the business ... ...... there it is not known who is the owner and who is the manager ........
I wish I could give no stars because the quality of the food I purchased was spoiled. Half the food that I purchase I had to throw away. I spent over $100 but wasted over 50%. I live 20 miles away from this place and had to return twice not even to get I’m sorry you had a bad experience from the manager.
Yesterday- it was half the people as it always is. The manager herself help me out. She needs to pay attention to detail! I asked for Hojaldra and she gave me Champuradas! The Chao Main was all noodles and 4 pieces of red peppers with NO VEGGIES! She did not show me the Chao Main nor the Champuradas or those would have been fixed asap and this customer would not write this review! Need to do better customer service and pay more attention to details on the customer needs!
The most horrible client service ever. With a 4 people line, I had to wait 45 min to get service. And when I finally got it, the stupid "lady" just went to serves other client while she was taking my order. Managment must seriously pay attention to this, because all the compliants are about service and personnel maners. If I can Give 0 stars I will do it. Manager is so arrogant.
The service is slow. My mother and husband got huevos rancheros and the salsa is like canned tomato sauce with a very strong taste of anis. I got scrambled eggs with ham and also came with extra egg shells. We will not be coming here again to eat.
The service is super slow. I waited 20 min to get 4 cups of revolcado. And this happens all the time even if it is just 2 cups. They need more people working there or something to accommodate the long wait in the lines and to recieve your food.
I've been coming into this bakery for a long time. I've enjoyed the many baked good and food variety they have available, but the service (or rather my last interaction with the cashier left a very bad impression) I had finished my meal and walked over to see if I could get change as they had live music and wanted to tip the guys playing. Politely I asked if I could get some change when she had a minute, and she rudely asked if I was buying something. I explained that I had bought my food and was just trying to get change and would be willing to wait, but she waved me away saying she had no change for me. I really hope this a one time incident but management should really talk to their employees. Customer service has always extended so long as the customer is at the establishment, and I find it very poor that I was seen as a nuisance to be waved away.
One of the worst customer service is provided there by managers. Owner should select better managers or should close the restaurant & bakery. Never going back there again to spend my money if I’m going to get insulted by managers.
The customer service here is so bad. It’s disheartening because it’s suppose to be a one stop shop for everything Guatemalan products. There is even a vendor next door with clothes and artesian items. We go here because of the convenience of bread and food. And it’s local to all family members. But honestly, I stopped going myself personally. The service makes the meal taste bad. The head server, the lady with blue eyes seems like a colorist. A strong reason I no longer go. I witnessed her level of customer service changed with the shade of people’s skin. Many servers have bad attitudes. The parking is difficult. The lines are very long. But due to the traffic of people it can’t be helped. It’s just annoying, so prepare to wait a while during peak hours. The restrooms for the most part are very clean, but it’s a 50/50 chance there is no soap/napkins or toilet seat covers. A few instances only 1 stall had toilet paper. Overall, if you don’t care about minimal customer service, place has decent food, variety, convenience of bread and other Guatemalan products. It’s reasonably priced. But the multiple experiences there made me no longer want to spend my money there. I just go when we have family gatherings.
This place used to be a great place, great food but a month ago I stopped by for a lunch and food to go. I couldn’t eat the food everything was too salted, I believe they have a different cook, I wish they would pay attention to this issue, I would love to go back.
The flavor of there food has changed and on top of that the food is not hot. I never see thermometers or anyone checking the temperature of there food. The girls there are very rude too. 12/23/25 I went to buy my Christmas tamales. I was so disappointed. I ordered 18 tamales and heated them up on the 12/24 to eat at my family gathering. We all didn't eat the tamales we ended up throwing them away. The tamales masa was hard with no flavor and the sauce inside the tamales had a jelly like textured and tasted like it was spoiled the supposedly pork meat was a piece of fat all wiggly and in general the tamales had a disgusting taste. Very unhappy with the whole experience as that's what I was serving for Christmas. I had to end up ordering pizza since we had to throw the tamales. I don't recommend no one to buy tamales
Their food is good but the service really sucks. They have a line for bread to go and that's fine. But the fact that they don't have a line to order food to go, is really inconvenient for many people. They expect you to wait in the same line where ppl are dining in... It just doesn't make any sense.
Updated: very long lines- over a 30min eait for food and the food service was very slow given that it takes 2 people to help a customer Great bakery goodies!! Love their hot drinks. Food is also good. Their lines are very long at times so expect a longish wait
Don’t come here if you know English. Had three different people try to take my order, just a breakfast plate, and the most common one as well. Person I was with also tried her best with Spanish as well. Was very patient. But manager came and made things even more akward at the register in line. Wouldn’t recommend, spend your money elsewhere without sitting down and eating with rude people.
