Spanky's Lubbock Reviews
Spanky’s is an absolute must whenever I’m in Lubbock. The famous cheese sticks are amazing, and the burgers are great too.
Fried goodness and great burgers , this is a must have if you're in town
I'll always stop at Spanky's for the fried cheese every time! Nobody does the fried cheese like Spanky's. It's a meal all on It's own. Burgers and everything else are always great too. But if you live in Lubbock, visiting from another town, visiting from another state, another country, or even another planet... try the fried cheese for God's sake!
Lady server was very nice , no problems on the orders and she kept the area clean . The food was delicious, however it was a little deceptive the food on the pictures like the Burger looked so much bigger for the price . The food tastes good also the French fries probably needed the grease changed out already and perhaps we simply caught things after the lunch rush .
Great college atmosphere dining experience. Good food and a neat little location. Worth a stop if you're in Lubbock.
We love Spanky's they have amazing fried cheese and burgers.
Everything was great. Fried cheese, fried pickles soooo delicious
I love Spanky's!!! I cake here every time I come to town. The food is unbeatable!
Was greeted walking through the door and when we left… Very friendly and helpful staff!!! I got the mushroom Swiss burger, and it was fantastic!!! Not greasy, just perfect!!! The crinkle fries dipped in ranch was delicious…
Visited while in town for Wes Kittley High School Invitational Track Meet this weekend. We tried the mozzarella sticks, jalapeño burger, and Philly cheese steak. Everything was zesty and delightful. Service was great also. The family and I graced our presence by signing the wall.
Always great food and service. Our order came out in a few minutes. We got there before the 12pm lunch rush. The burgers were delicious and we definitely had some of the house special Fried Cheese.
The fried mushrooms and cheese sticks are amazing! Both are served with ranch. The service and food are amazing! Customer service and atmosphere is great! Greeted every time we walk in. Food is hot and fresh. Mushrooms were a little hard this time but still good. Burger and fries are delicious. Refillable soft drinks. Waitress comes to check on you and very attentive. Reasonably priced. Recommend eating here.
Great food, friendly staff. One of the best cheeseburgers I've had. Great place to visit if you're in Lubbock
My favorite place to eat on Lubbock! Food is always amazing! Little secret menu item I have got for years, get the Texas Cheesesteak, but with their chicken. You can thank me later!
I’ve always have had a great experience here. The staff were super friendly and welcoming from the second we walked in the door! Also the fried cheese is a must have!
A staple and tradition for anyone visiting or attending Texas Tech! Great food at a very reasonable price, along with pretty inexpensive beer on tap. It's located right off campus, literally right across the street from the main entrance to the University. Don't forget to write your name on the wall!
We had a lovely lunch after walking around TTU campus with our kids to see where they went to classes and studied. We recommend the fried cheese appetizer. It was tasty. The service was quick. Our food was tasty. The atmosphere was fun. Our teenage son appreciated the quantity of food that came with the “He Man Woman Hater” meal.
Great burger joint! This place came highly recommended for their fried cheese- and it did not disappoint- great breading but even better breading to cheese ratio- they are large cheese sticks. In addition we had the Monte Cristo and the swiss mushroom chicken sandwich. Both were very good- Parking is tight but there is additional parking in back! Seltzers and beer were available as well.
Visiting from out of town, referred by a friend, did not disappoint. Really good burger and fries!! Friendly service!! Fun atmosphere. Definitely a great place to eat in Lubbock!!
Stopped into Spanky’s across from Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas to check out the hype and rave of their burgers. Atmosphere was quiet at lunch but apparently is party city at dinner! Their World famous fries Mozzarella sticks were large, cheesy and flavorful. Burgers were also very flavorful and filling. Pricing wasn’t too bad but you do have to purchase burger, fries and drinks separately. Highly recommend their Hotter than hell burger! 2nd story doesn’t open until dinner.
Great burger place just off the Texas Tech campus. I had the Hotter than Hell burger and my wife had the Bacon Swiss Chicken sandwich. We both enjoyed our choices. I would have loved it if the fried okra were offered as a side instead of just an appetizer.
No pictures because food was gone before I could. You MUST order the fried cheese and make it a 6pc because 3 just wasn’t enough. They’re so delicious, two days later and I’m still daydreaming about them. The green chile Swiss burger did not disappoint!!! 10/10 would make the drive just to here again. Impressed!
First time goer. Was told by a family member that the cheese sticks were insanely delicious and the burgers were amazing. They did not disappoint! Quite the size of a burger and the Hot sauce on the Hot as Hell Burger was solid heat 🥵! Parking is kinda rough but worth it if you park and just walk.
We were dropping one of our kiddos off at Tech and were told we had to try this place! The cheese sticks were insanely gigantic! There were 4 of us so I ordered 6...we could only eat 3 with 2 of us unable to finish our food! We really enjoyed the crispy buffalo chicken sandwiches, and the burger was good, too. Highly recommend.
One of my favorite places to visit when in town. I've tried several different items on the menu and have not been disappointed yet. The location was not far from the hotel or work area. If you order the cheese stix heads up they are huge! Definitely recommend the mushrooms and the hamburger and cheeseburger!
Not from around town, decided to try this place out with some co-workers. Upon entry of the establishment, there was good music playing. It wasn’t too busy as we went around 11am. Service was rather quick at that time. Our food came out rather quickly. Upon receiving, I had ordered a burger and fries. The burger was rather bigger than I thought it would be. There was excellent flavor. The fries didn’t have any seasoning, not sure if that how it is or if we have to ask. We also got their huge mozzarella sticks! Those were the bomb!! You definitely should get them!!! Overall I was pretty impressed with the food and the establishment. The staff were friendly and helpful! Definitely recommend!
Must try if visiting Lubbock for the first time! While there are a few salad options, the menu is the definition of college food! Burgers, sandwiches, and fried starters galore. The small order of fried cheese is 3 which is plenty for small party as they are just humongous! Each one is the equivalent of like 4 sticks you would get elsewhere. The breading is light and the cheese is just ooey gooey delicious. The fried pickles are chips with a light breading - perfect! The burgers are delicious, so are the sandwiches, all around just a delicious meal. There is a dining room and register to checkout both upstairs and downstairs and to go order. The staff is friendly, the place is clean, just a good time - highly recommend giving them a try!

Loved the burger. Need to go back for the fried cheese! Add a few more thoughts to post review.
Went for lunch while working TTU football game. Cozy atmosphere and good food at good price. Local establishment with college flair. Will definitely go again if I’m there.

Great food. The cheese sticks were the best I’ve ever had. I got the Monte Cristo and the others got different burgers. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We will definitely be back when we visit.

The guy that took our order upstairs at the counter was not great, and neither was the salad, but the burgers and fried cheese were great.
Contrary to other comments, there is plenty of parking on the side of the restaurant. The cheese sticks lived up to the hype. The burger and chicken sandwich were tasty. Would give 5 stars, but the cheese sticks came out after the meal. The staff was friendly. They have postings for jobs because they are short staffed (as so many other establishments are at this time). Will definitely return.
This place really does have good burgers. The “He-Man Woman Hater,” is not just a clever name but a particular stand-out on their menu as well. But I will echo other reviews here and say that they do fall short in a few areas. They are “famous,” for their mozzarella cheese sticks which I will say are some of the largest I’ve ever eaten, but the batter encasing the fair amount of cheese is COMPLETELY lacking in flavor. Some garlic salt and/or Italian seasoning in the breading would work WONDERS for these cheese sticks which are otherwise pretty exemplary. I also found my son’s chicken tenders to be similarly lacking in flavor, which I honestly expected after tasting the batter on the mozzarella. However, my wife’s bacon grilled cheese was pretty phenomenal as was my burger. And the fries are sitting right on the fence of great flavor but too soggy. All in all I think the overall 4.0 Star rating got this place is fair. It is one of the better burgers in town, they just fall short on their side items in my opinion. The place is really clean and the staff is really friendly but be wary, due to the location it does tend to attract a sometimes-rambunctious college crowd.
Updated review 3/1/23 - great burgers, salads and of course the Fried Cheese!!! We brought my nephew here a few years ago and every time he comes to town, be wants to come here and has never been disappointed. Parking is limited and they get busy quickly around noon, get there early if possible. Be sure you are hungry because you will be when you leave!! Spanky's is a landmark restaurant that has been here since the 70's. Updated and expanded within the past 5 years, but still serving up their famous Fried Cheese Sticks. Big, fried chunks of special blend mozzarella and served with ranch and marinara. Have noted that the prices have steadily gone up over the past couple of years, but the food is worth it. One word of warning, the stair case was not updated and is very steep, so watch your step!!
Love the way it has more than 1 floor. Fast service. Good prices for the quantity but our meals were kind of boring, lacking flavor. I'll still be back cause it's a cool place to hang with family. Only had 3 meals there so far and each meal was bland.
Love the ridiculously large fried cheese and the best fried pickles I've had in my life, paired with their house-made ranch 20/10! Service is friendly, parking was easy mid afternoon on a weekday. Bacon cheeseburger was okay, one tiny slice of bacon torn in half was disappointing :/.
The food was alright but kinda pricey for a burger joint. The ambience is nice and the service is super quick. I had the cheese sticks, a bacon burger and soda (no fries) and it was $30.

This burger joint is a long time staple for Lubbock. Their fried Cheese is hands down the bestest in Lubbock. This review is from my recent visit. The margaritas have fab mixtures, like blueberry pomegranate, but this time lacked any alcohol. Seriously, after a long stressful day with no food that first sip should instantly been felt. Drank the whole margarita hoping somewhere in the glass there was alcohol. The biggest disappointment after not eating all day and anticipating one of their big juicy burgers was a massive let down. The Swiss Mushroom burger was only meh. Not juicy like Spanky's burgers from the past..The meat nor the mushrooms had any flavor. The buns were fab at least. At least the fries were fresh and tasty.
Food was wonderful! Everything is an extra cost (fries, sauces). But that is not expressed on the menu, you don’t know until they tell you. 😢
Atmosphere and service are what you go here for. A classic Lubbock joint located right next to Texas Tech campus and across the street from the Jones AT&T stadium which makes for a good stop before or after the games. Food is OK, nothing special. Burgers where kinda bland and the fries were just the frozen bag fries which are always kinda soggy. My mushroom Swiss burger came with like 5-6 mushrooms, little dime-size ones at that. But the cheese sticks on the other hand were GREAT! Big log of cheese in a really crunchy and savory batter, easily feeds 6 people. Great cheese sticks, so-so burgers.
Old old old building is the first thing that comes to mind. I felt like asbestos was in it or something. The bathroom was missing the ceiling at the top and it smells so bad and it just looked like it was about to fall apart. The staff was nice they really were but the establishment needs renovating definitely. The food was okay meaning it wasn't bad at all but then it wasn't the best either. Cool place to visit tho.
Food is mildly above average, I would definitely eat there more often however the price is ridiculous for the quality of the food. 40$ for average food ain't it. There's plenty of better food at reasonable prices.
Update: most of what was said still holds true today (3/17/2023). I will add...they lose another star because despite having salads on the menu, I would definitely order a burger or basically ANYTHING but the salad. My lunch date and I got the grilled chicken Caesar salad and suffice to say, I hope I don't get sick. It was browner than me & limper than Hugh Hefner (iykyk). That is all. Pics for reference. 🤢 This is a very "do it yourself" experience. Apart from getting your order taken, don't expect a lot of assistance from the people who stand behind the counter. This review will be to help the first timers like us. 1. More than likely won't be greeted when you come in or thanked for your service when you leave. Just go directly to the counter and put in your order before picking a place to sit. 2. Wait for your order before going upstairs!!! (There's a sign we didn't see that tells you what to do but not a soul will tell you even if you look lost/confused just FYI 😂😂) 4. Whatever you do don't use the restroom. It smells like a nursing home. 5. Bring wipes bc the cleanliness wasn't there on our visit. We basically bussed our own table despite there being more than 3 people standing around. Okay now that I got that out of my system ... The food will make up for lack of service IN TROVES. If you haven't heard, they do have (hands down) the best fried mozzarella in Lubbock. Burgers are great 👍come hungry!!! Food arrived in a timely manner & was hot & fresh. Now that we know what to expect, we will more than likely go back bc the food was THAT good!!
Our first restaurant to hit when we rolled into Lubbock for move in day. Parking is very limited so just be forewarned but they do have curbside:) You have the typical kids running the place but unfortunately NONE seem to remotely enjoy their job nor how to act like it, but cordial:( Menu options are awesome! Ordering a Ham & Cheese sandwich, Orig Cheeseburger with fries, Zucchini as appetizer, a few drinks and a Chocolate Shake(no malts). Well the Zucchini nvr showed up before the other stuff, so asked the girl runner if she could check and she acknowledged but after waiting 10mins and nvr seeing her again, went back up to the ordering counter to have them go check. Finally got there 10 mins later when we were obviously done and no longer wanted it but just took with us anyways and yes, ended up in the trash uneaten:( But the sandwich, Cheeseburger, fries, and shake were all very good. We may return bc the food was pretty good but WAY too many other opt out there. So I wouldn't rush for you to visit here as I'd have to recommend other places. This was recommended to us, so we tried it but they completely failed on 1st impression of service who cares but thank goodness the food turned out good, or we were hungry and a cardboard box would have been good. May provide an update if we return on any of our many future visits to Raider County!
Husband and I decided to stop in for a late lunch today. Parking lot was practically empty and we commented on that years ago, it would be full. The girl who took our order at the register seemed like she could care less about her job. She was neither friendly nor welcoming. There was another girl working who brought our appetizer and she was flat out angry and practically threw our food on the table. Service was VERY disappointing, but the food was great.
We had trouble getting our order, but once brought to the attention of the staff, we eventually got it. Food was pretty good, overpriced for what it was. Side note: I hate standing there waiting on a staff member to look up from their phone so I can ask where our food was after waiting over 25 minutes. Personal pet peeve
Pretty expensive off the bat 2.50 extra for fries alone most of it is 10 dollars for 1 meal so a family of 4 has to spend 50 to 60 dollars for lunch but other than that this was pretty tasty the kids…

The fried cheese was spectacular. My club sandwich was just ok We enjoyed the atmosphere and enjoyed being with each other
service was SUPER slow. Very small dining area. Too many people with not nearly enough staff. Food was just ok. Cheese was definitely worth it though!
The Legend of the cheese sticks is accurate. They were wonderful as was the zucchini chips.. My friend had a Philly cheese steak sandwich and it came out as hamburger meat and melted cheese. Bun really hard. Never heard of a Philly cheese steak served as ground beef. Fries were hand cut, but were so greasey we couldn't eat them. Appeared the grease hadn't been changed in several days. Pricey and overall food was not good. I know it was the first day of college coming back, but overall very disappointing. Nics just north of there was much better in all aspects..
Husband went with a friend and picked me up some food to go. I got a cheese burger with lettuce and mayo and fried pickles. According to husband, the server was very rude when he asked where the food was. The server also held the bag so all the boxes were sideways. This was evident when he got home and there were burns in though styrofoam tray. The pickles were extremely salty, to the point I couldn't eat them. Husband (who loves salt) also said they were too salty. Sad because they were crispy which I enjoyed. My burger was made wrong, I asked for mayo, cheese and lettuce and there was no mayo. Not the biggest deal but disappointing.
Only thing this place has going is location. Mediocre food at best, no flavor to onion rings, chicken strips or fried mushrooms. Ordered the “famous “ moth sticks and didn’t even get them till I asked TWICE! Daughter’s chicken was COLD and mine was borderline! Won’t return.
I love the cheese sticks. I’m so confused how anyone in that kitchen would send out fries that were absolutely cold for me and my grandson. Even the hamburger patty didn’t seem fresh it wasn’t exactly hot. Sad because this was my first time bringing my grandson here. Probably last. For a little more than the $52.05 we paid for 2 burgers, one order cheese sticks fries and drinks we can go to Texas Roadhouse and at least it will be hot. Very very disappear that much money. EDIT; Spoke to the manager after I wrote this and expressed my disappointment. He said oh sorry, never offered anything. I told him he should be embarrassed. As I expected it didn’t faze him. I’ll make sure to tell everyone about this.
My captain and I went to Spanky’s based on recommendation from a local. After a quick walk we arrived at Spanky’s. A cozy little diner. It has an upstairs and downstairs dining area. We stayed downstairs. A great location to come to before a Red Raiders game. I ordered the Green Chile & Swiss Chicken with fries. I also ordered fried pickles and a sweet tea. A side note, aside from salads and the meat protein, not a lot of non fried menu options. The fried pickles were salty. To the point there was no pickle tang. We left over half the serving. Let’s move on to the main course. The Green Chile & Swiss Chicken was average at best. The chicken was grilled to the point of a tough chewy skin, and dry meat. But the highlight of the meal, sweet tea. The sweet tea was refreshing and needed for the dry chicken. And French fries reminded me of Ore-Ida French fries. So I asked my captain how was his hamburger. He shrugged his shoulders, and said “I’ve had better.” The staff are nice. Great location and atmosphere but the food is maybe average.
Such a disappointment. They got rid of all the awesome sandwiches they were known for. Fries suck now. The burgers have always been average at best. Cheese sticks are still great. RIP spanky’s
I DO NOT recommend Spanky's. Used to go here, but moved; not what I remember. Completely disappointed. Driving through and stopped by. Waste of time. Very off on the cheese sticks tonight. They were not cooked enough, and the cheese was not melted, the breading was excessive. The cheese is supposed to stretch, and be hot. It's cheese, and a fryer, not a technical process. The breading was an inch thick, just peeled it off and left it. It seemed like dead food or left overs. The fries were nothing to comment on, save expensive. The cheese sticks and fries were over over priced. We normally complete our meals, but left it on the table. The young lady at the register had no personality, but the young lady that delivered the food was very kind and sociable. Not worth the effort to request a remake, ask for quality assurance, or complain. Needless to say, we won't be back.
It’s a shame because it appears that a Lubbock favorite is declining from poor management. The bathroom was disgusting with overflowing trash. The hand soap dispenser had the bag of soap that was supposed to be installed in the dispenser just laying on the sink. The tables were dirty with crumbs. The worst part was my receipt said 2:38pm and we didn’t get our two person order until 3:15pm (cheese sticks, chicken sandwich, chicken strips). Food was good, but the chicken only covered about 2/3 of the sandwich bun. We spent $42 on two people and ordered water. Not a $20 a person experience, that’s for sure.
We don’t live in Lubbock but have heard that this place was very good. We came here and initially the guy working downstairs was very friendly and helpful. When we got upstairs to order and eat, we were greeted by a less than enthused young lady that seemed as if we were a bother than anything. We have a large family and we ordered 5 kids meals, 2 adult meals and the “famous” cheese sticks. The total was $64. The food came out really fast but the food was just your average frozen foods. I got a BLT, which was what you would think and my wife got a bacon chicken sandwich, she loved it. Over all just mediocre place to eat. Neat atmosphere, rude staff, and mediocre food.

Waited 45 minutes for 3 burgers that came cold. Tables were sticky and unclean. Servers placing food trays on dirty used tables then stacking them back onto other food before serving to customers. Plastic wrapping on burger.
Wife called Manager NAMED HECTOR..from Lubbock store.... He refused to admitt that they messed up her mushroom and Swiss burger and put REGULAR onions instead of Grilled onions and just HUNG UP ON MY WIFE!!
I don't understand why my husband wanted to eat Spankey's? Our fries were cold and taste like they were cooked in old grease. The fried zucchini was wilted and cold. Our burgers were drenched in mayo and raw. My husband was so hungry he didn't notice till he seen mine. Let's hope he doesn't get sick from it.
I have lived this place, and was so looking forwa To coming here this weekend. Ordered our food and sat at a table. Asked for them to change one of their many tables to ABC. The manager told me when she finds the remote she would. Proceeded to go through receipts and stand there. Asked the person who brought our food to change it and said they would. Learned at that point that two other tables asked as well. Then a lady came by and said they don’t have that channel…ABC, a channel EVERYONE can get!! As we left the manager was still standing there doing NOTHING! I told her thanks for finding the remote and she said, oh sorry about there. We will never be back, and I will stop referring people to Spanky’s. Tell your managers to do their jobs and stop having their employees lie for them because they’re lazy!
It’s been awhile since we have had Spankys, $41 dollars later and the this was a waste the food was horrible, COLD & the fried cheese was disgusting, it’s like they didn’t fry or bread it enough. We live right around the corner there is no reason why the food should have been cold the way it was. Fry’s were even soggy & cold. No ranch or marinara for the cheese sticks & my son didn’t get a drink with his kids meal which was also very cold for being a grilled cheese.
I ordered their famous cheese sticks, as well as fried mushrooms to go. The fried mushrooms were not beer-battered like other restaurants, but instead covered in what looked like something from Chick-fil-A. This crust was over cooked and the mushrooms themselves were just this side of raw, but slimey, which made the crust slide off when we tried picking them up to eat them. I chalked that up to being my mistake because I had never ordered them at Spanky's before and maybe that's just how they are. But the big disappointment was the cheese sticks. I got them home and they were nothing like what we have always gotten in the past. Covered in about 1/32nd of an inch of what looked to be flour and melted in a pool of cheese in the bottom of the foam container. I called, asked for the manager and asked if they had a new cook. He said that he personally inspected all orders and saw none that looked as I described. I took them back and he told me that they always look like that. I hate being called a liar and told him so. What a shame. I used to love their cheese sticks, but now that I know what they look like from now on I will never go back.
