Great place to meet and eat with family or friends oceanfront. The food is on the level, the atmosphere is enticing and beckons you out to that "in vino Veritas" place in you. The service is second to none. The folks there want you there. Good times!
Mussels and pinot noir with a beach view? New standard. Update: came back for the mussels again. Awesome.
Good food on the boardwalk. We went for sunset and it worked great. The place was very busy but we didn't wait long for a table. The bathrooms closed due to an "emergency" (we saw water coming out). The food is pricey, but it's Venice. I loved my brussel sprouts and Jane's Other Addiction. The heaters keep us mostly warm on the patio. Service was quick and friendly even though it was crowded and busy. Great food stop on the beach.
We decided on this place after looking at a lot of menus. The fish tacos and chowder were what we came for and we were not disappointed. The fish tacos were delicious. Flaky fish in a great batter, the right toppings and sauce. They were fantastic. The chowder wasn't what I'd call a traditional chowder, but it was amazing. The addition of bacon and veggies was great. The sourdough bread dipped into the soup was soup-erb. And the whaler lager was a great addition to our meal. If we are ever back in the area we will for sure be stopping by!
Great spot to catch sunset on the patio (seat yourself so you may have to wait around for a spot, just grab a drink!). Great fish tacos, and a social crowd. If your from out of town, chat it up with anyone. All is friendly at the beach! Staff seems knowledgeable, friendly and efficient, even when it’s slammed packed! They rock.
Here’s a place that’s been head by the Covid virus for the positive the streets are filled with tents and outdoor patios and the wailers got the biggest and is constantly in touch with local activities the food is outstanding and you’ve got a great beach window available so you can get all the delicious food for the wheeler on the beach at Venice
What a surprise . We were looking for a quick & healthy option before hitting Venice Beach and we stumble on the Whaler Takeaway Spot. We had a fantastic Poke Bowl, which tasted so fresh ! Good portion as well ! They also served fresh pressed juice; I had Green Apple & pineapple juice which was tasty! Great service too!
Visited the Venice Whaler a couple of times whilst on our honeymoon and fell in love with it. The location is superb, just off the boardwalk and Venice pier. The staff were really friendly, the food we had was great and the drinks certainly did the job! Sitting outside as the sun goes down is a real treat, can't beat that view of palm trees as the sun sets. I would visit every time I go to Venice, just a great place to go. During the day is very chilled out, the evening it certainly steps up in to a much more bar vibe, but mostly only if you are inside and in particular upstairs. But that's your call, up for party, down for chill. Either way, I love this place.
The food was the best during my vacation the crispt mozzarella sticks were amazing. My shrimp tacos were the best I've had and my son loved his cheese pizza. The strawberry lemonade was very flavorful along with everything else. It was the perfect choice for our lunch. I highly recommend this place great service and great presentation.
We stopped in after walking the pier. We ordered fried cod tacos, grilled shrimp tacos, guac and chips and french fries. It was all great! The cod was a little fishier than I like. The grilled shrimp tacos were 🤌🏻 Fries were nice and crispy. Very casual place and all the staff were super chill.
Found The Venice Whaler after searching around google maps for a place to have lunch. The whaler had high reviews so we decided to give it a try. The shrimp tacos were very delicious. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos. I repeat, highly recommend. You will not be disappointed. The service was fast and to the point. We got seated quickly and our waitress was nice.
Get beach bar. Service was great. The drinks were whimsical. Great location. Straight across from the beach
Just ordered a margarita at this place, but the overall experience at this place was pretty nice. I sat outside and the waitress was very friendly. You could definitely tell that the staff, from the top down, really care about their customers. One of the security members that checks IDs stated that their system checks to see if you have warrants. I found that to be interesting. I don't how true that was or if he was just messing with me. The atmosphere was neat as well. It was clean and very lively. I could see this place really being live on weekends and other prime nights. The bathrooms were nice too. There were actual doors making them feel very private. Overall, this was a very well-rounded place from what I experienced, even though I did not eat.
This place is amazing! Every time we visit Venice Beach, our oldest son insists we stop here — it’s become a family tradition. The staff is always kind and welcoming, especially to kids, which makes the experience even better. The food is more on the fast-food side — not the best you’ll ever have, but definitely decent. What really makes this place special is the incredible view of the ocean. It more than makes up for the limited food options. Overall, it’s a great spot to relax, enjoy the view, and spend time with family. We’ll definitely keep coming back :)
We loved everything about this place. The food was delicious. The patio was comfortable and had blankets for if you got cold. I would highly recommend going here.
Being right at the beach, was not expecting a 5 star place due to the amount of tourism that is around. This place is one of those "always busy" places with Amazing food! The beer selection was some of the best I have seen here in LA. Everything that was ordered was top notch! I had the Brioche Grilled Cheese with Pulled Pork and Tomato Soup. Yes, it was as good as it looks. Also thanks to Sean for the great service and Very quick return on drink orders! Cheers!
I've lived in the area for years and never came here. What a mistake. This is definitely the go-to place to take your friends and family. Great atmosphere, great food.. and I mean I was pleasantly surprised with the food. The poke is great, with the cashews mixed in with the rice. Light - not saucy. Great drinks, including pear cider and high quality regulars with their moscow mules. I totally see myself coming here every week.
Great place to grab a few oysters and a drink. Usually it’s very busy, so don’t expect things to happen quickly.
Could not recommend this place more. Great energy, great drinks, great food. Delicious margaritas to go in all sizes. Will add jalapeños to it if you want it spicy, just ask. Fries are delicious and the pizza by slice is just okay. The cheese steak is great and the Caesar salad is incredible. Don’t believe they serve breakfast any longer but when they did, it was out of this world should it come back.
I am so glad we stopped into this place! We were on a bike ride along the beach and wanted a restaurant with an ocean view for lunch. The upstairs balcony is open seating and we found two seats that face the water. We had a great view and even better people-watching! Our service greeted us right away and we ordered drinks. The food was unexpectedly great! It's a very casual, beach-themed spot and the dishes were very basic offerings, but done so well I was pleasantly surprised. The pizza was one of the best I've had, with fresh ingredients and so much flavor. The spicy chicken skewers was fantastic! The staff was friendly and the service was great. I would absolutely eat here again.
Solo Work Traveller from the UK. Great choice of excellent beers, and the Margarita Pizza is REALLY good but lay off the farms worth of Tomatoes. The service is "too good". The staff personality is great and drinks are quick to come out. But over an hour period I was asked six times if I wanted to order food. Each response as the first one. I want to chill with a beer for a bit and a will probably ask for food later when I feel like it. It doesn't detract me from coming back again just providing constructive feedback. The vibe of the place is awesome. The music has a British/Ibiza aura. Playing classic 90s to modern club anthems.
Busy Venue with a roof top bar that looks over the Venice Beach Pier. Fantastic for those desired sunsets shots. Service was prompt even though it was happy hour and Friday.. Food was as good as you could expect with a mix of happy hour specials and regular priced items. Defintely worth a visit..
Enjoyed lunch here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon with my family. Food was tasty and drinks were good too. Very attentive staff. Not only was Ashley L a great server..we also had several other people bringing us what we needed and checking on us too. The Venice Whaler helped make my fantastic day at Venice Beach even better.
Loved the Double burger & the fries! A bit salty patty matched perfectly with the beer, and crispy fries served with ketchup and aioli sauce were very nice. Great view from upstairs. Although it was cloudy/raining, they had upstairs terrace covered up so you can still get the atmosphere by the ocean side. I'd love to come back if I'm in the area. Service was friendly too.
While in LA I wanted to visit Venice Beach and have dinner close to the water. This place was perfect for that. They have multiple setups. They have a tent, patio and upstairs patio. The vibe here is amazing even on a weeknight. The service was excellent. Our waitress Shelby was beyond kind and very attentive. I ordered a pizza because I had seen other reviews and it looked really good. I was not let down. The pizza was great! The drink I ordered was also very well made. This is a spot I will definitely look forward to next time I'm in town.
This was our first evening in LA, and The Venice Whaler set the tone perfectly. The atmosphere was vibrant and relaxed—exactly what you want by the beach. The staff were incredibly welcoming and made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. I had the fish and chips, and they were excellent—the panade was especially well done: crispy, golden, and full of flavor without being greasy. Overall, a great spot to kick off our trip. Highly recommend for anyone looking for good vibes and good food in Venice!
Stopped by for a quick snack with my puppy and we both enjoyed the food and service. Typical American fare, attentive service, pup got his water bowl as soon as we got seated, the wings were extra crispy which we love!
Venice Whaler is the perfect spot to grab drinks and food after catching the sunset from the Venice boardwalk. It’s got that classic beachside bar feel, but with great food, strong drinks, and a vibe that can match whatever kind of night you’re looking for. I started with the coconut shrimp appetizer, and honestly, that alone was more than enough for a meal. The portion was huge, and the shrimp were crispy, flavorful, and paired with a great dipping sauce. I went in thinking I’d follow it up with an entrée, but by the time I finished, I was completely satisfied. Now, let’s talk about the Whaler Margarita—this drink does not mess around. By the time I finished my first, I was already feeling it, but it was so good I couldn’t stop at just one. I ended up having three total before heading out (don’t worry, I took a Waymo back to my room), and they were consistently delicious, well-balanced, and exactly what you want from a beachside bar margarita. Service was also a highlight. My waitress, Veronica, was beyond sweet—seriously, the kind of service that makes you want to come back just for the experience. Attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect. The upstairs bar was packed and way rowdier than I was in the mood for. But the downstairs patio was absolutely perfect. Even though it was a chilly night, the outdoor heaters were placed just right, keeping things warm while still letting you soak in the fresh ocean air. From my seat, I had a great view of the water and could still people-watch as folks strolled by on the street out front. Overall, Venice Whaler delivered exactly what I was looking for—great food, strong drinks, and a laid-back but lively beachside vibe. I’ll definitely be back.
Loved this place! Fish tacos were the best drinks were really good! Rooftop view of the Venice pier was breathtaking. Will be back!
Fantastic view from upstairs. The food was absolutely divine and portion sizes were plenty sufficient. The servers were super friendly and welcoming. Wished we'd known about this place sooner as we would have eaten all our meals here!! Will definitely come back if staying in the area again!
Great vibe, very fun/beachy atmosphere. I visited at night but this would be a great spot to watch the sunset. Service was top tier, the bartender, Erin, was amazing and extremely efficient. The tuna crispy rice had too much rice for my taste, but the house made guacamole was perfect. Overall, happy hour is a great deal for the pricing.
I had a great experience here! I ordered the seafood plate and everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The drinks were amazing too — especially the cocktails, really well balanced and not watered down at all. The staff was friendly, attentive, and professional, and the whole place was super clean with a nice atmosphere. Definitely worth the visit — I would 100% come back!
Great and delicious food, fast service, lovely and kind staff, cute and cozy atmosphere with a great view. 10/10. As a New yorker, who always find something to complain about, i am impressed, have 0 complaints and definitely will recommend this place to my friends. Updates: This place is truly THE BEST in LA. A girl, who was serving me, was an angel. Hope, she will take care of you also.
I visited with my parents from the East Coast, and we had a wonderful time. The food was excellent, and being right by the beach made it perfect for a nice walk. The clam chowder and buffalo wings were especially delicious. Thank you for giving us such a great memory for our first trip to the West Coast.
After a walk on the beach, we were looking for some cold drinks and a little snack to tide us over until dinner. Stopped in at this casual looking beach bar and ordered a couple of drinks and some tacos. The drinks were cold and the tacos were delicious. It wasn’t too crowded so it was easy to have a conversation and relax. Prices were a bit high but not totally out of place with other establishments in the area. The wait staff was super pleasant and helpful. Great people watching spot.

I had the Whaler smash burger and the buffalo chicken wings, and both were so good. The food really hit the spot, the service was friendly, and the lively beachside atmosphere made it even better.
Great view, attentive service, and great food. We snacked on the coconut shrimp and poke nachos

Beautiful rooftop place with decent sunset view! It’s right on end of Abbott Kinney road and you have all these awesome places nearby. Tips - - Good to visit around 9p local - they generally have someone performing, obviously on weekends - visit the rooftop during sunset - and have a seat on roadside / decent view or pier and the mountains behind - order the local special for day, on weekdays it’s good
local institution known for its hospitality, The Venice Whaler has been welcoming locals and visitors since 1944. Whether you need an escape from reality or just crave an impromptu celebration, The Venice Whaler is an infamous purveyor of magical sunsets, killer margaritas and world-famous fish tacos. As the sun sets on the beach, patrons can raise their glasses in the traditional “To Life” toast that’s been warming hearts since the bar’s inception. A favorite watering hole of many famous musicians through the years including the Doors, the Beach Boys and the Beatles, don’t be surprised to see a familiar face!
Wow this place was popping off on a Saturday. I can't imagine that when things go back to normal they will ever get rid of the massive tent out front. They have probably quadrupled their capacity with it by completely taking over the sidewalk and space. For 2 people, it was very easy to get in without a reservation, but I imagine the wait is probably pretty long if you have a larger group without a reservation. This place has great vibes overlooking Venice beach. They have a diverse menu with tons of different food options to satisfy any taste. This is the perfect place to come with friends, grab a drink and enjoy the sunshine. What we ordered: - House Fries: very delicious! The perfect side to share. - World Famous Fish Tacos: this was a very large portion size. The server recommended the beer battered alaskan cod. The fish was delicious and cooked perfectly. I was very satisfied. - Whaler Double Burger: they have this listed as being voted the top 10 in LA. My boyfriend definitely loved this and would recommend if you're in the mood for a burger.
Another great place near the shore. Decent prices for where you are. The food looked great. The staff was very efficient and friendly.
The Whaler isn't about Michelin stars- it's about vibes, beach views, and a cocktail (or three) in hand. And honestly? That's exactly why I love it. The patio is the heart of this place- sun on your face, ocean right there, and live music that makes you want to stay way longer than planned. It's one of those spots where you run into friends, make new ones, and just lean into that salty, beachy Venice energy. And maybe laugh at a couple drunk tourists, ha! Food? Totally fine- classic bar food that does its job. But let's be real: you're not here to analyze the aioli; you're here for drinks, people-watching, and the feeling that you're exactly where you should be on a beach day. As a local, I can tell you: this is Venice at its best. Casual, a little chaotic, and a whole lot of fun.
Right on the beach so you can’t beat that. We had some lunch and drinks. I tried the Bloody Mary, which the waitress highly recommended, it was not good! Very water, the mix was predominately horse radish. It was bland. Any town we go to I search out the best Bloody Mary and this was definitely not it. I had a hamburger which was really good. Nice and juicy with all the goodies. The service was really good they checked in often. I know it’s a busy outdoor place but it was kinda dirty. Or table was dirty. They just needed to wipe and sweep all over. It’s a little rundown. But it was cool to hear it’s been there since the 40s so I gotta give them some slack. Overall I’d go back.
We had Thanksgiving Day brunch here and they were able to seat us (party of 6) without reservations. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The Captains meal for 2 was filling. The server was very friendly, but she had to take a required break during her shift, and we didn't have anyone follow up with us. Overall a positive experience.
Absolutely delicious! We ordered a sushi bowl and a burger and loved both. The spicy tuna was a great choice for the bowl. The fry basket was ginormous too and we couldn't finish everything. Honestly for the quality, taste, and quantity, worth the higher price. Our waitress was great but the other staff was a little frustrating.
Fish sandwich was great until I got to the middle and then it was too tough to eat. French fries were really good. Staff was super nice
We came for Happy Hour. I had the Californication to drink. It was refreshing but a little tart for me. The spicy tuna rice cakes were delicious. The clam chowder was good also, they put bacon in it, which is different for me but it was a nice touch! My husband got the fish tacos and said they were “taco-ey” but he said he enjoyed them.
I had dinner at the Venice Whaler and really enjoyed the experience. The food was good, and the service was friendly and attentive. We started with the calamari for appetizers — fresh and nicely cooked. For mains, I had the cod fish sandwich, which was excellent, and the smashed burger, which was also very good. The outdoor seating is beautiful, with a great view of the pier. Overall, a great spot to enjoy good food and a relaxed atmosphere by the beach
We were here around 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon with a lively buzz happening in the area. We sat outside so we really didn't get to experience what it was like inside. But given that the place has been around for over 80 years, it was easy to overlook it's somewhat shabby digs. The food, service and the fact that it's steps from Venice Beach and close to the Canals more than made up for it. We would definitely go back. It's an 'institution'!
My husband and I were riding our bikes along the beach and were ready for some lunch. The spot has a perfect location right off the beach. Honestly, it looks like you had the best atmosphere on these couple blocks. Paulina our server was fantastic! Per her recommendations my husband absolutely loved the fish tacos And my Philly cheesesteak is also good. Drinks are good. Atmosphere is fantastic even on a cloudy day!
Dinner at The Venice Whaer and ordered the big seafood plate to share. The fried shrimp and fish were crispy and well seasoned, without feeling too heavy. Fries were plentiful and stayed crunchy, and the coleslaw added a fresh contrast to the fried portions. The tartar sauce was creamy and worked perfectly with the fish. The whole platter is generous, easy to split, and ideal for a casual dinner by the water. Lively atmosphere and quick service make it a solid spot if you’re in the area and want something simple and tasty.

The place needs a good cleaning. Tables inside and out were sticky and dirty. Floors - were pretty bad. restroom - again - really nasty.
I tried couple tacos and all of them was nice, except their BBQ Wings.\n\nView was great/staff was nice&cool\n\nI wish their menus and table was not sticky and chairs were cleaner.

They have some great food from the whaler. I recommend their philly cheesesteaks. Lots of their stuff is overpriced.
The atmosphere is great because it has a nice rooftop overlooking the beach. The female bartender upstairs though does not know how to make drinks. Asked for a Jameson sour and it was literally mostly bitters. Had to have the other bartender remake it and it was really good. Still a nice place to have a drink. Not too pricey.
The vibe felt right upon arrival, Can’t say much about the food as I didn’t have a chance to order after being here for 30 minutes on a Tuesday afternoon, had a nice beer though with a great view to people watch as well as a gorgeous beach scene, the bartender was very friendly. Better luck next time I suppose.
Great location - was able to watch a gorgeous sunset! Decent menu. Staff were attentive (and very busy!!) Shared a starter which was amazing. My main was delicious too. Unfortunately hubby was given a rather raw burger 😳The staff didn't ask how he wanted the meat (which is a thing apparently 🤷) Otherwise good.
The food is okay, it's really one of those "touristy" spots that people go to while their visiting the pier or Venice Boardwalk. Albeit, it is better than one of those places directly on the boardwalk close to the Big Vee. The plus side is you can walk up the stairs to sit on their "balcony/rooftop" area to look out but the views aren't the best. It's just a parking lot and the pier. Service was pleasant.
Came here for a birthday gathering over a weekend. Their outdoor patio was packed and lively. There's really convenient parking just a few steps away.\n\nService was friendly, but very slow. My fri…

Staff is nice. parking can get tricky but lots are an option. Food solid but you are likely coming here for the experience of socializing. Pricing and portions are fair at this hip causal spot.
1 star for Dining Atmosphere 1 star for Taste & Execution 1 star for Service 3 stars for Presentation & Partying Absolutely not the place to go for great food, let alone good food. I dont want to be rude, but I ordered the chili dog with slaw and it was so bland and incredibly salty and the tacos as well. (Looks amazing though right) Presentation was spot on for each meal I can say, but service went completely out the window upon a popular night like July 4th. The only seating available being outside we were not a priority as the guest who'd come for the party/bar/club experience. Guest who didnt come to eat were found all over the seating area lounging over guest who did. Very disappointing, maybe this place is good for partying only.

Absolutely disappointed. The restaurant is dirty, and they served me wine in a glass that was visibly filthy. To make matters worse, they completely messed up my order — it was brought to another person in our party. When I pointed this out and asked for my meal again, the waitress (who was extremely rude) just snapped that she would “add it to the bill.” This is not how hospitality should work. If you want to waste your time and money, this is the place. But if you actually want to enjoy your meal — look elsewhere. And of course service was included that’s explains everything😉
We were 4, ordered drinks and food, since it’s a restaurant on the beach, everything is overpriced. Everything was okay until we asked for the check, the waitress tipped herself 25% without even asking us, which we found really rude and inappropriate. That’s not the way things are usually done as we were going to tip anyways and it only gives bad reputation to the establishment…
The food was good, but the waiters, especially one Black waiter, answered my phone and told me they would take the last order at 11:30. When I arrived at 10:30, they told me they were already closed and asked if I wanted them to cook me a hamburger. I'm a waiter myself, and I think that was a bad way to treat people.
This was a good experience but when they had karaoke night tonight, which is Thursday I asked him to play a black song and he said that he can play it, but they were playing all the white songs so I felt that was racist. Tell him about they don’t allow them to play R&B or hip-hop that’s very racist so I did not like that.

There are some spots in town that just stick with you, places that feel like home even if you’re just dropping in for the first time. Nestled right in the heart of the Venice area, it’s been a go-to for what feels like forever, and for good reason.First off, let's talk grub and libations.
