The meal exceeded expectations, and the service was wonderful
This was just half a block from my hotel, so I decided to check it out. The breakfast was amazing and affordable, and I was impressed with how efficient the staff was. The place was packed, and yet it wasn't a long wait at all for the table, the food, or the check.
A traditional local cuisine restaurant. Food is very good. Try the menudo or machacado. Good portions.
Al restaurant has new administration. They remodeled the place. I liked this place before than now. Food was very good, I had carne guisada especial. Beef was so tender and well seasoned. Prices are very fair.

This is a gem in the city. Although it only accepts cash, its location is quite convenient when you finish your party and you crave for an after meal. You definitely must try the "menudo", which is a traditional pork soup in Mexico.
I am reading one of my mother’s diaries, she wrote her love story daily while dating my dad from 1944 to 1950. They spent a lot of hours drinking coffee al “Al”,myself now living in the US, remember the restaurant. Next time I go to Monterrey I will visit el “Al” , and re-live those wonderful years from my childhood .
This is in an old section of the downtown area. But this place still has excellent service and delicious food! They’ve been here for YEARS

I really loved this restaurant. It is just a classic old school dinner place. Don't look for fancy dishes or modern cuisine. Al restaurant has authentic home food. First thing you have to try is the machaca, it is sooo delicious. Just be careful if you are not a chili eater and ask the cooker to be gentle with it

Super traditional cafe, it looks as if it had been ripped out of the 40s. Great coffee and service, just remember that this is not fast food.

Do not order the hot cakes. Service is slow and it was not that busy. Our waiter was good, but another that was serving coffee refills next to our table, totally ignored us. He turned around to look at me when I asked him for coffee and just left, his coffee pots were pretty full. Another waiter passing by told him that I was signaling him, he ignored him too. Clearly ignored me, like, 'that's not my table.' I brought it up to the cashier. Never going back there.
Very easy to miss the entrance. Food is only OK. Very well known to locals so it is often very crowded. Extremely slow services from waiters!! You might want to eat there anyway because other similar restaurants are poor also.
