I've slept on this place for too long. Great food, great portions at a reasonable price. They were playing soft classical music when we stopped by before closing. Cashier was very friendly and attentive. The room is clean with good aesthetics.
Loved everything about the experience, the gentleman who took our order was so friendly and answered our questions, realized we had little ones and brought us water cups and plates without us asking. There is a great natural light, soft music so you can still socialize and the fooood, it was so gooooood, everything was good, that's not even an exaggeration. The flavor omggggg, please stop and eat here.
Hawaiian BBQ in Poway? I always wanted to try it, but was a little skeptical of location. This Groupon gave us the courage to try it and boy were we surprised by the wonderful seasoning of the food and generous portions. Ono kine grindz! Broke da mouf! 5 BIG SHAKAS for Ipo Hawaiian BBQ.
My first time back since I heard it’s under new ownership/management. I ended up getting the Special BBQ Combo #1 and Seafood Combo #3. The BBQ plate came with chicken, pork and beef with a side of rice and Mac salad. The seafood combo came w fried fish and shrimp. I also got 3 spam musubis. I have to say, the food blew me away. The portions are generous. The meats were flavorful and has a char without being burnt. The seafood combo was crispy. The spam musubis were proportional! Most places give too much rice to spam but here it’s perfect enough take away from the saltiness. IPO has plenty of parking and lots of dining spaces to eat inside. I wanted to phone in my order but saw no phone number. When I asked, they said check IG. They have drinks that I’ll have to try next time.
A hit every time. Something for everyone. They always have a deal going on & everything tastes next level delicious.
Tried it for the first time a couple days ago under the new owners. Before it was OK. Inconsistent at times. Let's just say it wasn't my first choice when I had a Hawaiian BBQ food fix. After trying it recently though, it'll probably be one of the first places I'll think about going to for my fix. Ordered the Garlic Shrimp, Surf & Turf (asked for Mahi instead of shrimp), Garlic Fried Chicken, a la cart Short Ribs, and a Spam Musubi. ALL of it was good! Big plus for me: two scoops of rice, with the mac salad. Some places only give one scoop rice, one scoop mac. It was all so good. Such a big improvement than before. Simple menu. Can't wait to try the other offerings. Chef David took my order and prepared the food. Such a nice guy. He was welcoming and kind. Had a great experience.
The food was really delicious! My favorite was the BBQ combo, which was very flavorful and juicy. The crispy shrimp was also excellent! I will definitely be back!
Came here with my buddies and we all loved it. I got the mixed combo plate which came with bbq chicken, bbq beef and boq short ribs. So amazing highly recommend. My buddy got the garlic shrimp and loved it, I took a piece and it was delicious. My other buddy got the loco moco and said it was one of the best he's had. My other buddy got the chicken lumpia and the spicy short rib and he loved it. We all shared the crispy wings and we all loved them. Restaurant was clean and the cashier was a great which is always a plus. Definitely coming back here to check out the rest of the menu.
Super fresh cooked to other katsu and grilled chicken! The portions were HUGE! Easily 2 or even 3 servings of protein on the grilled chicken plate and 2 on the katsu plate. The chef was also running cashier at the time and he was super friendly! :) the mac salad was awesome and flavorful and the rice was topped with nori flakes! Definitely going back, super worth the money.
New Owner! Had the chicken katsu. It was delicious and perfectly cooked. The macaroni salad was on point. Highly recommend!
We had the Special bbq combo Pineapple Orange Chicken bowl Spicy beef ramen and had the pleasure of tasting the Kimchi we both were so impressed with the flavors of everything this spot was a true delight! We will definitely be back😀
Hidden Gem! According to the staff, the place is under new management. Food was fresh and delicious.
Have been coming here for years. Jenny is so gracious to all her customers. Food is delicious. We especially like the beef, ribeye, and chicken.
Everything is great! I highly recommend this place!!!
Been going there for a while, super great food, i always get the bbq chicken, cannot recommend enough, crazy portions, insane quality, just wish I was closer lol
I will admit. I was shocked when walking in, the environment had definitely changed since my last visit and I was hesitant . But I am thankful to say that the food was excellent. All reservations about the restaurant changed after first bite. Glad to have them in Poway!
Home cooked delicious food made fast and with a personal touch! Our team at mossy Nissan in poway ordered catering and they took amazing care of us! I would recommend them 10/10!
Teriyaki chicken is some of the best teriyaki chicken I've ever had. The Hawaiian donuts were phenomenal.
I'll be real, all I ever get is the spam musubi. I am a creature of habit. It's super inexpensive and reminds me of my childhood. They're always super friendly, & my food is done reasonably quickly. It's worth noting that they're a mom & pop place. If you walk in to get food for 8 people while it's busy, it's gonna take time. Have reasonable expectations.
Great place empty when I went should definitely be full.
Place is clean and the service is good. Cashier was polite and friendly. They are currently doing only takeout. I had the garlic chicken, which was very good, crispy and well seasoned. The macaroni salad is good too, seems like they put a little more pepper in it to enhance the flavor.
Crunchy musubi was great. The Mac could have used more carrots and cucumbers. BBQ plate was a mountain of meat. Will definitely go back and get loco moco and kalua pork. Jack in the box across the street is no longer the go to. Atmosphere needs more ukulele and palm trees Adding Hawaii to the sign outside might get more people in. I had no idea what this place was until I walked closer and saw the small led Hawaii sign so I said aloha And ipo is the Hawaiian noun and verb for love
Just tried this place out for the first time and will definitely go back! We tried the garlic chicken which was moist on the inside and lightly crispy on the outside, the spicy pork, which very flavorful but not very spicy. Perfect with a little chili sauce though. Also got the spareribs and my boyfriend is over here licking his fingers and has cleaned the bones so I'll guessing they were really good also.
Best veggie lumpia I ever have had. The Gyoza just as amazing. Cannot wait to try the rest of the menu. The food quality is A plus. Loved the food!
Nice local business for Hawaiian food. I ordered their spam musubi and a small bowl of katsu chicken, good portion sizes. Be patient though, they're kind of slow with prep because of staff so don't come in starving.
Food is very yummy, the "new management" (wasn't here for the old group) is Korean and talks pretty loudly in the kitchen. It feels like a friendly place Food is a little pricey but the taste is worth it. Most dishes come with scoop of white rice and macaroni salad which I like. I usually order BBQ chicken which is very tasty
Ive been coming to this place now for 2 months and what can i say, since i walk in the door there is David always smiling an ready to my order great customer service and what can i say the food is amazing thus its why i keep coming back!!
The food was amazing and my two picky sons loved it. They also like the boba slushies. We tried the barbecue and spicy chicken, both very good.
Love the food. The chicken and the short ribs are absolutely delicious my family loves the pasta salad as well we always get a can of their teas and juices everytime we go by recommend to anyone who likes Hawaiian or Japanese
We took our daughter, son-in-law, and 4 grandkids out to dinner at IPO. The staff informed us that they were cooking the rice and there would be a wait. We waited and it was worth it. The restaurant provided us with some free food that was delicious. When the good came, it was wonderful. Glad we visited this place!
5 stars!!!!!!!! Just because the main guy at the counter is and excellent worker and a gentleman! You loose him you loose the business. Give him a raise!!!!!!
OMG! THE FOOD IS AMAZING! MY FIRST TIME HERE TODAY! I GOT THE BBQ COMBO AND CRISPY SPAM! THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE! THE MEAT WAS PERFECTLY SEASONED AND TENDER! THESE GUYS ARE 100% TIMES BETTER THAN L&L! THE PRICE IS RIGHT & THE FOOD IS FRESH! MY NEW SPOT! I'M IN LOVE!
I came here during lunch and was amazed by all the food choices. I was indecisive and couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat. The worker, David recommended the chicken katsu and I’m glad I took his recommendation! It’s the best chicken katsu I ever had, tons of flavor! I dined in and the interior is very modern compared to how it used to look. Tables, chairs and overall is very clean and comfy. Customer service was also great. David was patient and very kind, great personality. It seemed like he was working by himself and there was a big rush of people coming in. I noticed he handled food prep and the front in a timely and friendly matter. This guy deserves a raise!
We were excited to finally check this place out and it did not disappoint. We got the mixed chicken plate with chicken katsu and bbq chicken, spicy chicken plate, spam musubi and the malasadas and enjoyed it all. Hawaiian food can sometimes be a little salty, but not here- everything was fresh, flavorful and seasoned perfectly. The portion sizes are great and enough to share. This is definitely going to be our go to spot when we want a little taste of the islands. The service is warm and friendly and they even gifted my little one a lollipop. We ended the meal with their fresh malasadas and let me tell you, they are little magic pillows. Do yourself a favor and check them out.
This is my second visit. The first time was a bit busier. I was the only customer during my visit this time. I ordered food for take-out. The staff who took my order was friendly. He recommended #1 Special BBQ combo. It included short ribs, beef, chicken, rice, and macaroni salad. The portion was big enough for three of us to share. I also ordered a Thai tea, spam Musubi and fried coconut cream mochi balls (these mochi balls were delicious). The price was reasonable for the amount of food that I got. The space was clean and has plenty of tables.
I came in on my day off from work and got about what I expected. The food was pretty decent, it just didn't taste as fresh as I would've hoped. I got the lunpia and gyoza as starters and they were both kinda bland. However, the BBQ plate was really good and it smelled good too. I was a little worried that the price was too high, but the portioning for the meat was a lot. Lastly I got the fried Mochi and it was super crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. I wish it was a little sweeter, but it was still really good. All in all, I would recommend people try the food out and see what they think!
I love how in the "To-Go" box, they added the lettuce. It absorbed most the moisture, so the Katsu was still crunchy when I got home roughly 10 minutes later. Very flavorful too. Will definitely return with friends and family.
I really like the food here. I have been twice. Both times I was very pleased. It's very casual. Lots of parking. Big portions.
my daughter craved spam musubi..she had 2 and was happy..😃
Definitely new ownership has this place moving and shaking! Interior has been remodeled and the overhead menu is new. Still has the Hawaiian plate lunch theme. I ordered the chicken Katsu plate and it was delicious, tasty and fresh. My only complaint is the breading was to thick and over powering the chicken. The Katsu sauce was super tasty, rice was sticky and the Mac salad was super tasty. Small reminders of home, I’ll definitely be back but I will try something other than the Katsu.
Today is Sunday, and according to their posted business hours, they open at 10:30 AM, which is why I stopped by after church. I arrived at 10:50 AM to find the doors unlocked, but all the lights and menu screens were off. A staff member told me they weren’t open yet. When I pointed out the posted hours, he replied, “The girl that opens isn’t here yet.” This was frustrating, especially since I drove over 20 minutes to get there. Management should do a better job ensuring the business opens on time and is properly staffed. I decided to wait 10 more minutes to see if the employee showed up. The employee did arrive, and I placed an order for the seafood combo and the BBQ short ribs combo. The food was mostly excellent. The garlic shrimp was flavorful, and the BBQ short ribs were outstanding with perfectly balanced seasoning. The only disappointment was the mahi mahi, which tasted more like a basic battered fish with little to no flavor. Overall, a rocky start due to poor opening management, but the quality of the food (especially the short ribs) helped redeem the experience.
Craving a spam musubi for an afternoon snack so I stopped in here while I'm in the area. The guy who took my order was nice and friendly. The spam musubi was ok. The nori on one of the musubi was coming apart and opening up. The spam could have been thicker. It was mostly rice with a thin slice of spam on each one. I didn't order anything else so I can only say that I don't recommend the spam musubi.
Food was very just okay. I got the spam musubi which was good, but I also got the fried garlic chicken and man I don't know if it was the ride home or what but the crust was not crispy. The taste way alright but the sauce it came with was good. I love Hawaiian food so it's hard to disappoint but I think it could have been better overall.
BBQ chicken was mediocre. Not bad but not great. I would go to another Hawaiian BBQ place if you like katsu for less. I haven’t tried their other menu. The price is $$$ for the quality. The cook / cashier seems unfriendly. Atmosphere is ok. The whole restaurant is clean!
Ok last time I ordered a pick up I ordered what I always order I been a customer of this place for 14 years, so I got my usual I didn't check my food so I got home and they only put one tablespoon of macaroni salad, ONE spoon! No teriyaki sauce even when i requested one, since this new owners came in the prices are higher than what they were before , so for 20+dollars that my BBQ Beef was i feel that I should've gotten more than one spoon of salad, it was not a scoop like they normally put it was a tablespoon size little serving. Anyways the food its okay. The girl that helped me was nice tho, also place was cleaner that what it was with the past owners so ill give them that. Also I went the other day on it was 11 am and it was still closed..... they have posted days and hours that they don't really follow and this has happened few times already management needs to be on top of that..
Fantastic food, but be aware staff closes the place at 8:00pm vs the 8:30pm that’s listed!
This was my first (and last) visit to IPO Hawaiian BBQ. I told the cashier it was my first time and instead of offering recommendations, he just stood there until I ordered. I ordered the short ribs and was shocked to see the amount of fat on each piece. One of the short ribs was still raw inside! Save yourself $23 and go somewhere else!
Overpriced, The Teriyaki sauce is watery and not thick like Teriyaki sauce is supposed to be. They charge for every single Teriyaki sauce you ask for. When I had already spent $26 dollars
i've only been here once, and honestly, the good reviews really aren't adding up; i wonder if i came on a bad day or what. my macaroni salad was room temperature, bland, and very greasy. the garlic chicken was not tender at all and again, it was very bland. now this wasn't the worst food i'd ever had, but it didn't seem fresh at all, but rather like reheated leftovers.
There used to be a chubby Asian guy working at this place, and he was a professional, and most importantly, he made great Thai tea. For a long time, I used to come here every day and buy this tea. But after he left, the place turned into a mess. And the way they make Thai tea is terrible! I don't visit this place anymore.
