Yummy and inventive Lao food! Everything we tried was really good. I would recommend a reservation just so you can get in -- the place isn't giant. Will be back!

I found the food here really good! Came in for lunch and the main things on the menu were rice+meat+vegetable. We had the 24 hour pork belly, the pork sausage, and the beef short ribs. All were very rich and flavorful. Delicious! We added the egg on top which was nice and runny (*warning* for those who don't like runny eggs). Also tried the condensed milk soft serve cone and the coconut rice pudding. The rice pudding was different, but very good with a rich coconut flavor and banana nut topping. service was fast and friendly Slightly on the pricier end for lunch (spent about $12 per person) but definitely worth it for the quality of the food! Will stop by again if I'm in the area!

I think I found my new favorite Asian fusion lunch spot. My coworker and I shared the blistered green beans, which contained a nice little kick. I had the gai yang, which looked, smelled, and tasted amazing. Great grill marks on the chicken, which was moist with the crispy skin. The mint leaves that came with the dish acted as a nice palate refresher.

One of my favorite restaurants. Great quality and skews more authentic. I love almost all the dishes but my go to here is the fried chicken with green papaya salad and some sticky rice. Start it with some beer nuts and a dark beer lao. BOOM

Prefect & hip & dekicious low key meal in uptown! Salt and pepper shrimp were the highlight. Sweet service staff also, very attentive and knowledgeable...awesome hip hop music too~

Finally got to try this place! I've been wanting to come here for a while! It's best to go with a big group to be able to try a bunch of different things. It's small plates, so you can get a lot of dishes - we got a bunch! Nice to try a variety of tastes, textures and flavors. Everything was very flavorful. My faves were the Crispy Duck Leg (special) - I loved the basil caramel; the Satay Beef Short Ribs - well-seasoned, and the peanut satay was good and not overly sweet; and the Fried Chicken - which was reminiscent of Japanese kara age (I recommend getting the sauce on the side for best flavor). But everything was good!

A very laid back and fantastic Southeast Asian "street food" restaurant, though I would hardly describe the quality as "street" anything. The chefs know how to play with seasonal ingredients, providing a varied and fresh menu that will make you come back again and again. They are definitely known for their pork belly rice bowl, but I find their entire menu to be extremely polished and tasty. Linden St. Brewery brews a beer only for them called Supafly. It is a rice beer, packed with citrusy and crisp flavor, though lacks nearly all carbonation. It pairs quite nicely with this genre of food. Make sure to come early, as there is often a line.

Blistered Green Beans, Our Khao Mun Gai (the chicken fat rice had option of egg on top YUM), Satay Beef Short Ribs, Gai Thot, Seen Ping, Jasmine & Sticky rice. For three people was enough and then some leftover. The server\s were very gracious and the prices were reasonable. The place is clean and the wait wasn't too long at all, even for a Friday evening. I'll definitely recommend to friends when they visit Oakland and I'm very grateful to my local peeps for bringing me!

I enjoy the Hawker Fare experience quite a bit. They basically do a fushiony, modern take on classic Asian fare—including very tasty rice bowls. I consistently come back because the food and ambiance are totally solid, and well done chicken and rice is a go-to comfort food. I particularly enjoy the blistered green beans, their kao mun gai, and any of the desserts made with Strauss Soft Serve. The banana sunday was one of the BEST desserts I've ever had. I think it was on the specials menu, so hope they opt to keep it in the rotation long-term!

It's right around the corner from my office, and the cuisine is a ray of light in a rather bleak array of Uptown Luncheries. It's a bit too dear for everyday, but perfect for special day lunches. I crave their dishes of noodles and greens, porkbelly and chicken combinations, and would never think of bypassing the egg on top. They call it "street food" but it's like street food reinterpreted, using very good ingredients. Don't be put off by the throngs if Pandora hipsters waiting for tables. Service is fast and efficient, and the wait is never long. Now shut up and eat your noodles.

This place has a really cool vibe to it and the food/drinks are on point. Very unique dishes with what seem like quality ingredients. Seemed a little pricy for what you get but will still be going back again to eat.

We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. He has been reading up on reviews and was talking about it for a month or so. We thought it would be the perfect place to take him. This place is a upscale version of Asian street foods. The flavors are good, the presentation simple and clean. I ordered the pork belly which I really liked. The short rib my friend ordered was good. We did share an order of mussels which was serviced with a bowl of rice. I didn't feel full when I was done eating, but I would go back on a day where I wasn't starving.

This is one of my favorite "comfort food" restaurants in Oakland. However, last I was there they were less than accommodating to my date who was a picky eater. While I don't like picky eaters either I was embarrassed by the inflexibility of the server. There is nothing particularly outstanding about the food that warrants such rudeness. So next date I'll probably go to Homeroom. . . but I still like Hawker Fare.

Hawker Fare is located on Webster street north of Grand Avenue. Once I got there I realized that I'd previously eaten there when it was a Thai restaurant. Turns out that the current owner's mom retired and her son reopened the restaurant as a tribute to southeast Asian style street food specializing in rice bowls. Went there for lunch with a friend and we shared the short rib and the pork belly rice bowls with a runny egg on top ($9.50 each + $1.50 for the egg). The food was good, but nothing exceptional. A restaurant of fusion Asian food. They have good portion sizes and a disco ball hanging in the middle to add to your eating experience. My dish was rather on the salty side but very tasty.

We wanted to like this place, we really did. So much so that even after having a pretty bad experience the first time we came on a bustling Friday night, we went back a month later to give it another shot. This time on a busy Saturday night. To get straight to the point: the ambience is nice--not too big, not too small, the people are friendly, the drinks are interesting, but the food here is too spicy. We are honestly blown away that most people can eat the food here. Let me set the stage a bit: I say "most people" because my boyfriend A who can eat chilis and spicy on the spicy meters of all cuisines, and 4/6 things we've had at Hawker Fare have been overwhelmed with the hot/spicy rather than spice/complexity/flavor/taste. The worst offender of all was the beef tartare larb. Sure, the hipster waitress said that it was "a little spicy" but we had no reason to think she meant borderline inedible. That time we also had the khao man gai (not really flavorful and completely off on the sauce if you take nong's in portland, or even lers ros in sf, as a standard) and the moo yang (nothing special, hard to get lemongrass pork wrong. The larb had dug a deep hole in how we saw the restaurant's food..and the two other items didn't do anything to dig its way out. We waived that dish as a fluke. Fine, so we go back this past weekend and order completely different things: the blistered green beans, the green curry with fish dumplings, and the sausage entree. Green beans were good. Green curry and sausage were again, spicy for the sake of spicy. To be more specific: green curry was not that flavorful, but did include hefty chunks of thai chilis (which can be really bad for those who can't take spice). Sausage had the thai chili built into it. Hotter that what we'd imagine most people could handle also. Oh and the chicken fat rice was nothing to linger about. It says something when people rave most about the green beans. Sorry Hawker Fare, we really wanted to like you, but if we're in Uptown or Downtown Oakland, honestly our money is better spent somewhere we can taste the complexity of the flavors instead of getting our taste buds obliterated by thai chili.

Our server was temperamental and ruined our experience, she failed to order a meal with the rest of our party. Then disallowed us to cancel our order and brought it out burnt. I'll admit I was sad because the host and hostest was quite amazing--got our wait from 40 minutes to 5.

I must say the only thing that made go for a second time was the location. Food below average, and unpleasant servers.

We were promptly seated, early for a reservation, then moved. All within 5 minutes. Then ignored for another five, before we left. Very unfortunate, as I looked forward to experiencing what I heard was a wonderful restaurant.
