The octopus is amazing. We found this place on TikTok serving excellent Italian food. There is no comparison to their starter octopus dish. It will blow your mind. Place reminds me of the Godfather, the servers are honest and very helpful.

Still good after all these years. Steelhead crudo was amazing. Good fish, good drinks.

What a throwback restaurant that makes you feel like you’re back in the 80s/90s and that’s a great thing! You can tell that there are a lot of regulars and tourists in here but it’s great. The waiters are dressed up professionally and the food is good. Has a mom/pop feel to the service and food. I was in SF for a work event and this place was the best food I had all work!

We sat in a private booth with old-school vibes that had privacy curtains and a call button. The sea food Excellent. The sourdough bread - perfection! The service was exceptional!

A quintessential old-school San Francisco institution... One of the best meals I've had in a long time... The Cioppino and Garlic Sourdough Bread... PERFECT a meal close to heaven. When you dine here, you experience why San Fransisco is one of the gastronomy capitals of the world

We popped in for a quick bite to eat and headed to the bar. The bar area was packed while the dining room had some areas sit and eat. We chose to sit in the dining room. Instead of ordering individual entrées, we decided to order a handful of appetizers inside dishes to share. Our dining liaison was very accommodating and nice, with a couple of fun quickwitted jokes. Super nice guy. The hostess was also very friendly and accommodating. Lots of seafood on the menu, we enjoyed some smoked trout, cured salmon, octopus, and a couple vegetable sides. All very tasty.

Wonderful weekday lunch experience and a celeb sighting too! Excellent sole, samdabs, drinks and tiramisu. Expensive. Excellent flavors and great staff! Recommended!

Delicious! Their steak rib eye has a sear to it that gives it its moistness and flavor. I always get it with broccolini and baked potatoes. The servers are really kind and always available. It’s pretty calm here too.

This classic restaurant although famous for business lunch that is fast and not supposedly be too hospitable with beyond service, was very accommodating when I visited to treat my friend for her birthday. The food always come fast and up to standard made it great for weekday lunch. Just posted here since I mentioned it in my previous post about @Boulevard

Was on the list to try when in San Francisco. It had a neighborly feel. Loved the raw oysters and whole grilled Branzino fish.

Classic, Gem, old San Francisco, again and again. If you live in SF and you never been to this place that was established in 1867 then you live under a rock and just go there.

Absolutely delicious place to eat. Everyone loved their food. The gnocchi was delicious, the cod was melt in your mouth soft, the salmon was also soft and flaky, and the stuffed petrale sole (stuffed with crab and shrimp) was just superb! We sat outside in the covered dining area and loved the ambiance. And the service was friendly.

We found this restaurant on Google while looking for something close to our hotel. From the outside, the restaurant didn’t stand out, but inside, it’s so comfortable, and the food is incredibly delicious! The fish is outstanding! Thank you for your love of cooking.

This place is fantastic. Our service was wonderful and the food was amazing. The prices are very reasonable for the location, service, and quality of food. We had the salmon and halibut and both were cooked perfectly and the sides were so tasty. I highly recommend getting an order of sourdough, it did not disappoint. Would definitely come back next time we are in SF!

Fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff, extensive wine and food menu. Sam’s is a must visit for business and personal meals - something on the menu for every appetite - and Peter, Stefano, Bilyana and the rest of the team are like a host family at a large dinner….warm personalities, many stories, and deep knowledge of the menu.

A classic well-oiled machine filled with old world charm and perfectly executed food. Pictured is a perfectly crisp Louis salad with bay shrimp (3oz) and, for (lunch) dessert, sugar and lemon crepes which harken back to an era of delightful but simple pleasures. For those in need of a measure of privacy, there is a plentiful supply of private booths.

I found myself in the showroom of Ellis Brooks Chevrolet on the corner of Bush and Van Ness talking to some lunkhead car salesmen about a brand new 66 Impala, and when the alarm clock went off I realized it was just a dream, and my nap was over! I had a planned dinner with a little Singapore Sling that likes to ride bareback but before heading home to Napa, and the horses I thought it'd be a good idea to have some Sand Dabs from Sam's Grill & Seafood Restaurant...And let me tell you, those Sand Dabs were Amazing..Better than Amazing, they were Spectacular! ☆☆☆☆☆

Excellent service, atmosphere & good price. Fish & chips are 5 star at least... Great wine & beer (a lot on tap) menu for sure. Highly recommended! Clam chowder was also excellent!

I headed for the outdoor seating, I'm mobility restricted. The staff graciously led me to the main dining room, where I was offered a nice table. I ordered my wife's favorite, the Scallops. The menu pic online doesn't do it justice. Perfectly cooked ( no small feat) well seasoned and paired with an incredible carrot dish, and red potatoes.

This is one of the best restaurants I have eaten at in my life. Food is heavenly, service is perfect and professional, and atmosphere is romantic and unique. If you want the best seafood dinner, come here. It is pricey, but a meal you will never forget

Delicious food and fast service. One of the best seafood restaurants i have ever been to in San Francisco. The cioppino was absolutely delicious, my raw oysters were amazing and the bread was delicious. We will definitely be back.

J

Lovely iconic eatery serving local dishes. White table service paired with knowledge service (they can recommend wines if you ask). The food is tasty and generous. The poached celery (celery victor) was well cooked and full of flavour. The Cioppino was also a great medley of local flavours and the tomato came through. There's a good atmosphere here. You come mainly for the history but the food is worth a detour, especially if you are looking for some local cuisine. The cocktails aren't half bad either!

C

Highly recommended if you’re in San Francisco! I had the Stuffed Petrale Sole "Marguery" (Dungeness crab, shrimp, shrimp cream sauce, potato puree). Terrific meal and service!

I have great memories of my dad taking me to Sam’s when I was first getting my career kicked off in SF. Having recently come back after years, I must say it’s still the same solid establishment! Great food, service, and that classic SF ambiance which takes you back in time. All the seafood here is fantastic.

Delicious very filling. The fish is killer and calamari steak. Tiramasu was hella good. Perfectly filling portions. More expensive but cute atmosphere and great place for a date 😉

Great atmosphere! Waiter (Stefano) and staff were amazing and really friendly, food was also really good. Highly recommend for a nicer dinner.

We ordered the steak and it was done perfectly. The Toasted Angels (oyster wrapped in bacon) offered another way of eating oyster but the bacon was too thick, overpowering the freshness of the oyster just a little. The fish and chips was competent but the highlight was the fries. The steak was wonderfully done, medium just the way I liked it. We were served by Alejandro and he was really helpful and polite. Food was 4 stars and Alejandro added another.

J
Jesse Chang

Tried the crazy burrito here, with fries and flaming Cheetos in the filling. I probably should have gone with a more conventional choice, but it was worth trying at least once.

A

Great vegetarian options. The veggie nachos were super filling and huge. Also had veggie burrito. Would be nice if it was more flavourful but still is a great place.

Best meal on this San Francisco trip! Loved the thematic interior and wall frescos. Order the Al Pastor super taco (with the lot), a Mexican coke and got complimentary tortilla chips and 3 small containers to hit the salsa bar! The salsa bar was fresh and beautifully presented and I tried the tomato, verde and habanero salsas. All delicious and the habanero was spicy but didn't blow my head off. My food was brought to my table which was a nice touch given this is a fast service restaurant. The portion size of the single super taco was enormous (forgive me, I'm Australian and portion sizes in USA still astonish me). The pork was tasty and tender and all the toppings went together perfectly. Staff were friendly. Sadly in Australia, we have garbage Mexican food... I wish Taqueria Zorro would consider opening a Sydney outpost so I can eat there all the time! Don't miss this place!

JESUS CHRIST. As a Mexican craving actual Mexican food in the bay area, I can certify this place is legit. I don't know if it was because I was slightly drunk, but everything I got tasted HEAVENLY. My non Mexican and not so drunk friends also enjoyed their food a lot, hahaha. I got the Tacos al pastor and tried the quesabirria. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, I 100% recommend this place if you're looking for the closest to the Mexican experience I've experienced in the bay area. Also, they were open after 11.

L

Food was delicious! Authentic Mexican food, exactly what we were looking for. Definitely visiting on our next trip to San Francisco.

Came here in the early AM after a night out on the town. Conveniently located no frills Mexican joint with late night hours. Fantastic food, friendly/quick service, great prices and portions. A few little tables inside but most people order takeout. The tacos were great, and the Zorro burrito was fantastic. Highly recommend.

Before that more popular spot who won’t be named moved into north beach, real ones know this was the original taqueria. Been coming here for a few years and the thing I like the most is they keep their prices fair, and unlike other places they don’t go light on the protein. They got daily deals, I normally come for the lengua torta on Thursdays. I get mine with extra meat, but it’s still very fairly priced and comes with fries too. It’s a family run joint that’s been around for a minute. I also always see the same cook there which a good sign for consistency. Overall a solid spot. They got a good salsa section, and overall offers a classic SF taqueria experience that I would recommend, especially for the neighborhood choices.

Late night hit this place wandering around the Columbus Street. What a way to end the day with my stomach filled to neck with the delicious Carnitas Burrito. Carnitas was so soft and chewy. The green salsa was the best among the other salsa. Wished the hot salsa to be a bit more hot.The Burritos had no cheese and avocado though.

This is one of my favorite spots to eat at. Everything is very good. I've never been disappointed. I love their Flautas, Quesabirrias, Quesadillas and Tacos. Churros are really good too.

Welcome to a timeless San Francisco. A menu that blends the ninteen fifties and the present day. Wood panel interior and an excellent bar. Competent and attentive servers. I'll be back often.

We had a delicious lunch here in one of their cool private booths. I had excellent scallops with pea risotto while my wife had some equally good swordfish. They were easily able to accommodate her gluten and shellfish allergies. I started off with a tasty cup of clam chowder. We finished with chocolate puddings. The wine list was impressive, too.

Our server Shaw was amazing. He was funny, attentive and personable. As was the person who served us, I believe it was the owner. He was great as well. When we walked in the door, he immediately started banter and brought us to a private booth with a curtain. My wife had never been in a booth like this, and she loved it. The food was so good, and the service was old school and above and beyond. I can't recommend this place enough. Thank you for starting our weekend off so great!

a

Oh the fish here is sooo fresh and delicious!!! Sam’s should have a higher rating!!! The food quality is tops, the ambience is perfect, the bread is divine, the servers are attentive, the menu has something for everyone, it’s in a perfect location, and they care about their customers. Don’t forget dessert. The chocolate mouse is incredible.

D

I enjoyed this meal and experience very much. From the moment I walked in and was greeted and sat, I wasn’t pressed the entire party wasn’t there. The dishes were all delicious with generous portions of seafood. We had the sourdough bread, the seafood salad, crab cakes, the seafood risotto and the full crab. One of the best seafood salads with a generous portion of shrimp, prawns and crab, try their blue cheese dressing. The crab cakes were thick and full of flavor. As we sat the restaurant was closing and never felt rushed or like we were a bother. All of the staff and bartenders were genuinely kind and made us feel very welcome. It’s like stepping back in time, in the best way, to the US’s 5th oldest restaurant. I’ll definitely come back next time I am in town.

Reno and team delivered an excellent family dinner for 11 people. Such seafood delicious food ! From start to finish service and presentation did not disappoint. The sundae at the end was a perfect way to wrap up the meal.

Best cioppino in the City. It's stacked with seafood and the broth is decadent. I'd drive up to SF just for a bowl! Overall the restaurant is an SF classic and a must try for City visitors. I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life and have never been until this past weekend - what a stupid move. I certainly should have come here sooner and much more frequently.

After spending our day on Fisherman's Wharf and around the downtown area, we were ready to eat dinner somewhere close to our Hotel on Montgomery St. I wanted great seafood and saw Sam's was close and had lots of seafood options. The clam chowder was amazing! Full of flavor and a lot of clams! Also enjoyed the Oysters Rockefeller! Not many places offer this and it's one of my favorites. Ordered the fish and chips as our main entree. As fish and chips go, this was the best fish and chips we have ever had!! No heavy breading, it was light and flaky. Delicious!! Paired our food with a great Chardonnay and wonderful service by Mike. They don't have many restaurants like this around. Go and enjoy! We did! K & A from Michigan

Come on - classic SF financial district eatery / deal making / watering hole. Professional, courteous, knowledgeable service from front desk to table servers. Went today with my buddy (100 years old) to quietly celebrate him and a successful meeting on Montgomery Street. We got a private 2-person booth to the left, but kept the curtain open to see the people action. He had halibut (with broccoli and mashed potatoes) and I had sand dabs - tender, perfectly cooked, no bones. Two glasses of Savignon Blanc with the fish and black coffee to close during our long conversation. My buddy said he really missed working downtown on Sansome St., (in insurance) some 50 years ago, and lunch today at Sam's brought that back. Great day.

K

Classic seafood bar and grill with Top notch sand dabs and some of the best chipino you'll have anywhere in San Francisco. Extraordinary old restaurant and beautiful facility with lots of old San Francisco touches. Always a favorite for lunch.

I regularly order from taqueria Zorro and I have had nothing short but a wonderful experience. The food is always hot and delicious, there are also options for those who are vegan/vegetarian! Service is always impeccable, and catering orders are always on time. Highly recommend this place!

Great place. Their burritos are the size of 2 meals while only $13-ish. I just sit here and do work with their free WiFi daily. Great vegetarian options

R

These guys were really, really nice. I accidentally took someone else’s quesadilla and they made him a new one and were really nice about it. Food was highly respectable. Don’t give them a hard time.

For catering, Taqueria Zorro was 10/10. So fast and responsive via email. Tariq worked quickly and diligently to make sure that all our dietary preferences were accommodated. The food arrived perfectly on time and the staff was kind and helped me set up. Then the food itself was delicious. Each dish came in generous portions and tasted great. Feeding 30 people was made easy with Taqueria Zorro

J
John Saddi

I ordered catering from Taqueria Zorro, and it was fantastic! Everything arrived right on time, the portions were generous, and the food tasted amazing. You can tell they put care into every dish. This is my go-to taqueria, and I highly recommend them for both regular meals and catering — they never disappoint!

K

Hadn’t been here in years and wanted to revisit. Great atmosphere, good service, over priced food. Seafood was delicious, vegetables rather bland and over cooked. 2 dishes, bread and a glass of wine was $108 before tip. Was fun seeing and saying hello to former Mayor and California Speaker of the House Willie Brown holding court at the bar at 2pm in the afternoon. He’s 91 and enjoying life!

J
Jason Dragon

I think this place could be better if they updated a few things, for instance, the selection, which is too many in my opinion. This place was recommended by Lafe, the concierge at the Beacon Grand hotel. Although the food was really good, I can’t recommend this place for your normal diner, as it was kind of fancy, people dressed in suits, as well as pricey for the portions, and the quality of the food. I would equate this place to being similar to the old bookbinders in Philadelphia back in the day. There was a very old sense of familiarity associated with the 1950s through the 70s feel segregation of private booths, as well as rooms that were closed off, very posh. I ordered the octopus and I have to say, it was perfectly cooked. My wife had the stuffed pet role Marguery which was supposedly stuff with Dungeness crab shrimp and shrimp purée. I looked through this dish and tried to find any crab None was located. I did however find a very small piece of shrimp inside. That was the extent of this $33 dish. It was disappointing.

R
Russ Lewis

5/16/22...Had lunch today. Moderately busy but it was not noisy. Calm dinning experience. Service was relaxed. Had the calamari app and liked the slight heat of the coating. The swordfish was very good as my partner had never had swordfish. I ordered the crab salad but was served a shrimp salad by mistake but it was quickly corrected. The dessert was lemon tart, very good, and cheese cake which was a no bake cheesecake. It was presented with some mixed berries which was a good idea as the cheesecake lacked any flavor. It was not what I was expecting. The bonus today was seeing Mayor Willie Brown also having lunch with some people. If you are looking for a piece of iconic SF, this is worth the stop.

Lovely outdoor patio, 1server working but he was amazing. He poured drinks & served food. Checked on me multiple times, amazing attention to his customers. Makes for a nice dining experience.

We just returned back to the US after a 4 month trip to Asia and was ready for some American food! I ordered a crab salad and crab cakes and the lady was very nice and helpful when I called 35 minutes before they closed! I grew up in SF and must have driven & walked by here 1000 plus time in the past 40 years and never ever saw this place! The Dungeness crab was very fresh but the arugula salad with the crab cakes was old! $71 is a bit expensive for a salad and crab cakes! But it’s San Francisco! Morris

J
Jim Tulio

Attentive wait staff. Food was good. Maybe the best calamari I have tasted recently. I had fried seafood platter. Shrimp and scallops were great. My colleagues liked the halibut. Would probably return.

B
Barry Louie

Decent tacos. Ordered al pastor, cabeza, and carnitas on Taco Tuesday, so $2.99 per taco, loaded with meat. The al pastor was a tad bit overcooked, but the flavor was good. I’ll definitely try them again on Taco Tuesdays.

D
Daniel Mckernan

If you're in North beach and craving some Mexican food, this is a good option. I usually get a regular asada burrito, but if you're feeling sit down their asada plate is pretty satisfying. Their habanero salsa can be hot or miss, some days it's got good spice, other days it's mostly tomato flavor.

J
JT W

Food is delicious, staff is super nice. Vibe is a little strange, very old school stuffy vibe I think on purpose. That’s ok with me but I don’t recommend sitting in the private booth at the back near the restroom. Smelled weird

R
Ridge Greene

Great atmosphere, staff is wonderful but for the first time there were a couple issues, they forgot one guests chowder and overcooked the classic Petrale Sole, not a whole lot but its usually perfect. We'll go back, its a great place.

A
Annabelle Sri

I took the fish Taco. The fish was well cooked. Ingredients were mostly fresh. Waitress is not particularly talkative but doing all right. The inside was kinda loud and resonating, but still ok. There are sauces available and free to grab yourself. Almost everything is plastic so not the most beautiful decoration but we're here to eat :) Paid 8,17 after tax.

I recently dined at Sam’s Grill and had a delightful experience. The highlight of my meal was the Mixed Grill, which was cooked to absolute perfection. Each component of the dish—from the succulent salmon, scallops and petrale sole to the perfectly seasoned vegetables—was flavorful and well-prepared. For dessert, I opted for the Hot Fudge Sundae, which turned out to be a fantastic choice for sharing. The rich, velvety fudge paired perfectly with the creamy ice cream, making it a decadent and satisfying end to the meal. It’s definitely a dessert meant to be shared and enjoyed with a companion. The ambiance of Sam’s Grill is classic and inviting, with a charming, old-world feel that adds to the dining experience. The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed throughout our meal. However, the only downside was the noticeable abundance of waitstaff who didn’t appear to be busy. This was somewhat surprising, especially on a Wednesday evening, and it gave the restaurant a slightly overstaffed feel. Despite this minor issue, the overall experience at Sam’s Grill was wonderful. The quality of the food and the pleasant atmosphere make it a great choice for anyone looking to enjoy a fine meal in San Francisco.

A
Amie Dignan

Total ick. Stopped in for the first time solo. Bartender immediately touched my hand and asked if I was ok. I pulled away and he kept trying to touch my hand and ask if I was ok. His hands were sticky and it creeped me out. Salmon came out half cooked. It was the weirdest vibe and I couldn’t wait to leave.

S
Sal Sali

Its really messed up when you order every day from the same restaurant trying to support a local business in the area and when you call your left on hold for 13 mins all while you hear the employees talking and laughing and than get hung up on later There are 3 different taco places I could go to in the area but I wanted to support your restaurant But I will make sure next time to take my business where it's appreciated

K
Kristin Marie Frost

Ordered a MYO "VEGGIE" burrito. However there were ZERO veggies at all...instead, got a cold flour tortilla filled with pico de gallo and lettuce. Literally. That's it. Also specifically ordered guacamole, jalapeños, whole beans, limes, and Serrano peppers on the side. Got NONE of them with the order. Just two small containers of salsa. The entire order with the up charges, was over $18. Complete insanity. Needless to say, it was not eaten. The entire order was literally disregarded, as it all clearly noted on the order receipt. I do NOT recommend even attempting to order from here. Horrible experience and quality.

J
J Z

Terrible experience the lady at the register purposely over charged me for my burrito. She said because I was using Apple Pay they haven’t updated the prices. Than I watched other customers being charged regular price with Apple Pay. Maybe she was being unfair and racist towards me. Really bad experience
