Went to Philly in search of the best cheesesteaks, and John's rates up there with the best of them, so made sure we stopped by to give it a try. After two days of non-stop cheesesteak gorging all over the city, this place makes the top of the list. The food itself was unbelievably good, but more than that, what stands out is their love for the craft of making authentic and delicious food. You can tell that after three generations continuing at this location, this family has not only perfected the recipes, but cares about each order being the best representation of that perfection. Large portions, great flavors, top quality ingredients, fast and friendly service... all around, it was a pleasure and a privilege to eat at John's!
Tucked away in an industrial pocket of South Philly, John's Roast Pork is a time capsule of the dive dinner era. This bright blue shack has a utilitarian, no-frills atmosphere—outdoor seating, order-at-the-window service, and a crowd of workers and pilgrims united by the focus on food, not ambiance. And that food delivers. Their namesake roast pork sandwich is a masterpiece of simplicity: tender, slow-roasted meat piled high on a crusty seeded roll. The detail that makes it unforgettable is the hint of pepper in the pork—a warm, aromatic note that cuts through the richness and makes every bite super tasty. It’s a true taste of Old Philadelphia, and absolutely worth the pilgrimage.
John’s Roast Pork delivers excellence at every level. From the moment you walk up to the window, you can immediately tell this is a well-run operation that takes pride in consistency, quality, and execution. There’s a reason this place continues to outperform in a city loaded with elite food options. The roast pork sandwich is a masterclass in balance and precision — tender, perfectly seasoned pork, sharp provolone that cuts through the richness, and broccoli rabe that adds just the right amount of bite. The bread holds everything together without compromising texture, which speaks to thoughtful sourcing and attention to detail. Every bite feels intentional and flawlessly aligned. Beyond the food, the team operates with efficiency, professionalism, and a clear commitment to customer experience. Even during peak volume, throughput remains strong without sacrificing quality — a true example of operational excellence under pressure. Simply put, John’s Roast Pork sets the benchmark. If you value craftsmanship, consistency, and a product that consistently exceeds expectations, this is a mandatory stop in Philadelphia. Highly recommended and absolutely worth the visit.
A legit spot that truly does justice to the iconic Philly cheesesteak — a worthy contender among the best. The seeded roll delivers that perfect crusty snap on the outside while staying soft and airy within. Inside, a mountain of generously portioned, juicy seasoned steak is layered with sweet, caramelized onions and sharp provolone for its savory. Each bite is indulgent, hearty, and deeply satisfying — the kind that leaves you already planning your next visit.
I live about an hour and a half from Philly and when in town, I make two stops every time! John’s Roast Pork and the Rocky Steps! I’ve been going to John’s for close to 20yrs now and it hits the spot every single time!! The cheesesteak is loaded with meat & cheese. I get mine with Cooper Sharp, onions & mayo and it’s absolutely amazing!! Thank you guys for always being friendly and providing excellent subs, hoagies, cheesesteaks, steak & cheese or whatever else people might call them.
The bread here is next level. It is some of the finest I've had on a sub or hoagie. Fluffy, remarkably fresh, and with an oily hue that is a pleasure for the senses. I ordered a roast pork sandwich and a cheesesteak and loved both. I have since been struggling to decide whether I prefer this spot over another famous South Philly place that starts with an A. I think they win on seasoning and John's wins on bread. But just by a whisker in each case. Practically speaking, the deciding factor is convenience. It is much easier to get here by car, and way easier to get there by train.
We tried 3 other places for cheesecakes while on this trip. John’s Roast Pork wins by a mile. For taste, John’s earns all 5 stars.
One of the best cheese steak joints anywhere. We always stop here when we get near Philly. We always get our own and as soon as we sit down we say we could have shared one and take half home. I could probably finish one myself but I would be hurting for a while.
First time here yesterday after seeing John's on Worth It and other YouTube channels. Ordered a cheesesteak with the peppers, but it did not have any peppers. Also ordered the roast pork sandwich with spinach, but it did not have the spinach. Both sandwiches tasted really good though. Customer service was good. There is minimal shaded seating. There is parking on the sides of the roads and across the street. They don't do whiz here, so heads up for those that want whiz. If I'm ever in Philly again I'd be down to come here for cheesesteaks, and I think others would really enjoy the food here as well.
My fiancé and I were in the area and wanted to get a Philly cheesesteak. We googled “ Best Philly Cheesesteaks” and scrolled through the first article. We picked John’s Roast Pork based on the pictures in their reviews. We ordered one cheesesteak to split bc they’re huge. And, listen, let me tell you, after the first bite we understood why and how this place has been around through three generations! Forget the cheese-whizzy places, trust me! One bite of John’s Roast Pork’s cheesesteak and you’ll be a believer too! We got a new favorite place to order from. We wanna say ‘Thank you!’ to the staff ( Esp the cook!) at John’s’: THANK Y’ALL!!, We’ll be back, for sure.
Phenomenal cheesesteak. Roast pork was o.k. The cheesesteak here is large, tastes great, has little to no gristle and is priced quite fairly. Much better deal than many other places while being a much larger portion of meat. Much better taste than vast majority of other competitors. Might try it with a plain roll next time as the sesame seeds didn't add anything extra or better for me although the bread was still great.
John's Roast Pork... I'm not much of a pork person nor do I care for pork so don't take my recommendation on their roast pork sanwhich but I mainly come here for the cheesesteak. I've come to Philly twice last December and this December. I've had a year to dream about what I had last year. Sadly they changed their bread that they use to use last year. Overall this cheesesteak will not disappoint, its definitely a must when in Philadelphia. The meat and flavor of it is what stood out the most both times. I just wish they had the same crispy on the outside and soft on the inside bread they had last year.
Finally made it to John’s Roast Pork, and it definitely lives up to the hype. The roast pork sandwich was excellent. Juicy and quite flavorful, but they were out of broccoli rabe, which was a little disappointing because that would’ve deff enhanced the overall flavor. Even without it, though, still one of the better roast pork sandwiches I’ve had. The real surprise was the french fries. Perfectly crisp outside, soft inside, just the right amount of salt. Some of the best fries I’ve had in a long time at a fast food joint. If you’re in Philly, it’s absolutely worth the stop. Just hope they’ve got the broccoli rabe next time.
I'd give 10 stars if I could. We got off the plane visiting from South Carolina and immediately came here. I chose this spot over lists of best cheesesteak in the area and it was about a 30 minute drive from the airport. Pulling up the line was super long so we knew we were in the right spot. Ended up in front of 2 guys who work for Barstool sports and told us how to order our roast pork sandwich. We got it Italiano style and a cheesesteak with mushrooms and onions and a order of fries. Best cheesesteak I've ever had. Down here in SC people go for Harrys who are from Philly and Inkys..who are frauds but this sandwich from John's Roast Pork has set the bar extremely high. Definitely gets my vote for the best and with being a James Beard Award winner...that says something. The fries were perfectly seasoned.
As someone who grew up around Philly and has since moved away…this is always the first stop when driving a little less than 2 hours from the DMV to Philly. This is the real deal and always my favorite before hitting the stadiums before games or just a visit back in the city. The staff is always super friendly and I have never had an order issue. Everything always is top notch! I cannot wait to come back to have some Cooper Sharp next time! GO BIRDS!! 💚🦅
We stopped at John's before a show at the 2300 Arena, and let me say thank goodness we did! The food flavor was excellent, the staff was super friendly, the portions were well worth the value. All in all I highly recommend putting this place on a go to list if you have not had the pleasure of trying their food. 3 generations have done it right!!!!!
I made the mistake of flying into Philadelphia on a Monday. Imagine my disappointment to find out that John's Roast pork was closed. I then wandered into to the desert of New Jersey for 3 days and 3 nights before I was able to finally return to get one of the best cheese steaks in Philadelphia. For a sandwich that is only meat and cheese (I don't like onions) John's always provides not only a superlative but also very filling meal. The bread is crispy and buttery and still very soft on the inside. The meat was hot and dripping and had just shy of a perfect salt level. The cheese... I love a stinky, stretchy provolone and the sign of a good cheese steak is that my hands smell faintly of delicious cheese steak even as I write this. John's Roast Pork has the SECOND best cheese steak in Philadelphia and it's a lot more accessible than number 1.
The hype was real. Legit one of the best cheesesteaks I’ve ever eaten. 9.9/10 cuz nothing is perfect but this was damn close. Worth the 2ish hour drive from northern NJ. My GF said, “would i drive here on a weekend just for a cheesesteak? YES.” 🤣 ~$45 for 2 cheesesteaks with fried onions and Cooper Sharp, two sodas, and an order of fries.
Location but far out. Better than Pat's or Geno's where no longer freshly made to order. Wait after order about 10min. Cheesesteak good. Didn't regret making a trip out. Roast pork (never had them) surprisingly good. Guess it's well thinly sliced, so became flavorful, no longer dried-up taste. Choice of mild or sharp provolone. Popper was pepper cheese fried breaded. Quite nice. Fries crinkle. Serves Pepsi drinks.
Tried the roast pork, roast beef, steak & cheese, and chicken sandwiches. Roast pork was delicious, but the roast beef was the best I’ve ever had. Steak and cheese beats Geno’s and Pat’s hands down - I don’t like liquid cheese on my steak and cheese! Could take or leave the spinach but amazing sandwiches with high quality ingredients - bigger sandwiches at a better price. We got sliced roast beef to go and make our own sandwiches.
Lots of parking and easy to get to, they also take card as well as cash. Very efficient ordering and they make the sandwiches fresh and they do not take very long to come up. Be warned, large is a very large sandwich. I had roast pork with provolone it was absolute perfection. It was hot steamy goodness with a bit of pepper and salt and you could tell the pork was perfectly cooked as well as sliced. They are closed on Sunday and Monday so be aware before you walk from centre city to get there. It is worth the walk. They do have lots of seats, undercover, and outside.
No frills cheese steak institutional. No indoor seating but the enclosed patio was good enough even in the cold.

No lines when we stopped by in the mid-afternoon (likely after the lunch crowds) on a weekday. I've heard parking can be challenging, but we were able to get street spot right along Weccacoe Avenue. Nice woman at the window took the order and it was ready in about 5-10 minutes. Really good Roast Pork Sandwich and a decent Cheesesteak. Very sizeable sandwiches...the $10ish small sandwich is packed and is more than enough for one person...the $16ish large is massive.
Very good, fresh pork mix. "Dad's way" gets the sandwich a bit spicy but not too much; just right. Dad's way also let's the ingredients stay complimentary so they don't overpower the great pork mix.
A 7.5 out of 10. I’ve had cheesesteak outside of Philly, and boy are they hella salty, and mind you, I’m not from Philly, so I’m eating what you would call a knock off cheesesteak. The cheesesteak had the perfect amount of saltiness, meat ratio and cheese ratio. John’s Roast Pork is on a corner, from what I heard they do get very busy, we went on a random Tuesday, while on a mini vacation in Philadelphia. My husband on the other hand gives a 8.2. He’s had many cheesesteaks as well, knock offs and the real deal, as he’s originally from Philly.

John’s Roast Pork came highly recommended as one of the best Philly cheesesteaks! I got a cheesesteak with cooper sharp and fried onions. First thing I noticed was the bread, meat and cheese ratio was off. Roll needed to be scooped out, you can see from the photo how bread is majority of the sandwich. The meat was high quality and no fatty pieces, but the cheese was sparse and not evenly distrustful throughout. Each bite was different and not in a good way. It was mediocre overall. I wouldn’t come back here, I much prefer Del Rossi’s and Angelo’s.
