Tip: A small order of fries can feed a family of four, and the pastrami sandwich is huge, enough for two people to split. Consider sharing!

I have found that the consistency of the food taste or quality and portions between the many locations I've been to is spot on. The portions are typically more than most people can eat by themselves and the taste will make you attempt it. That brings up price. In My opinion you get what you pay for. Here it's quality AND quantity. You get plenty of both. You won't disappointed. When I arrived, it must've the perfect timing. I was able to park in the 3rd spot on the lot and I didn't have to wait to put my order in. There were a few people already dining and enjoying their lunch. More people were filing in as I waited for food to be ready. By the time I was done and ready to go, the place was packed. Quite the statement of the quality and value people have come to know about The Hat.
Always great food a large menu and great prices
Wow! I came here on the wrong day. It was a Friday night and we stopped during our travels from Arizona to Oregon. I don't eat meat on Fridays. They did have a killer grilled cheese and tuna sandwich. Although I discovered that I only needed one order of fries when visiting this joint. Dang. I think I had a potato coma from eating so many fries. They fill the bag and definitely take the prize from 5 guys on bag of fries. Definitely would eat here again if I visit Cali in future.
2/18/26: Excellent pastrami dip sandwich and big portion.
Great food great service very clean great staff highly recommend it the best pastrami ever
I had a great experience at the Hat in Pasadena. The staff is very friendly, the restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. I appreciate a good sized menu and well portioned servings. Thus far I've had the Wet Fries, which is fries with gravy and it was perfect. The fries were just right and the gravy was very delicious. The next time I went I had the Onion rings and the Grilled Cheese sandwich. I really loved the Onion Rings because they were crispy and very tasty. The Grilled Cheese sandwich was not my favorite but I'm giving them 5 stars because I just like it made differently. If I was going to improve the Grilled Cheese, I would use a cheese with more flavor, (like medium Cheddar/Sharp). The American cheese "they" use is too bland. Then I would butter/margarine the bread before putting it on the grill. This flavors the bread. Currently, the bread of the sandwich is nicely toasted but unflavored, because they cook the sandwich using the lightweight grease on the grill and that has no flavor. Anyway, it's my goal to try the remainder of the menu. Can't wait to go back.
Bbq beef was awesome, and don't miss the great chili fries there is enough for 2.
Such a cute little restaurant with the added bonus of free parking for customers! The pastrami sandwich is always done perfectly and food at this location always comes out pretty quickly. The only negative thing I could touch on would be that the chili dogs were a bit messy for my taste, but they tasted fine. I’d say the sandwiches are always a good choice.
I'm biased, east los classic, great food, better staff, clean and fairly priced
Meatiest Pastrami and the onion rings best l ever had
Came here after attending an event at The Rose Bowl. The food hit the spot! Nice generous portion of fries, and great tasting burgers. The Orange Bang was refreshing!
Is there anything better then chili cheese fries with pastrami on top?!
Excellent ! As good as my "sweet re magination" Maybe I hit them on a great day, I haven't been in several years, but this classic pastrami dip was EXCELLENT ! Not even soggy ! Clean, safe nice area
Best Pastrami this side West of the Mississippi 😋 brings back good memories of me and my Nina Bebe eating Pastrami at the original The Hat in Alhambra 💗
Absolutely LOVE their pastrami sandwich! So render and flavorful.
An institution. Always try to get here when I'm in Pasadena or Pomona. Honestly, I don't think I have had anything here but the dipped Pastrami with mustard and Swiss. No pickles. Chili fries are a meal in and of themselves. Don't skimp.
Never been here before had no real idea what to expect so went by others reviews!! Lucky for me the use canola oil so I could have the fries and ordered the chili cheese fries with fresh tomato’s and pickles on top, they were gigantic but delicious!! I also had a grilled cheese sandwich that was nice an cheesy!! We had to take home the chili cheese fries because it was so much food!! Didn’t know what to expect when I microwaved it the next day, picked off the tomatoes and pickles before heating and actually, I was surprised at how tasty it was when reheated!! For some it might be a little pricey at we had two medium drinks, 2 sandwiches and those loaded fries and our bill was almost 32 bucks. If I’d known the fries were so big I would have skipped the sandwich!! I’d go back!!
Stopped in because we just happened to need to use the bathroom and ended up getting a pastrami sandwich and it was the best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. Service was quick and friendly as you order at the front counter and the atmosphere is just an old school diner vibe.
I usually go to the one in temple city, but this one is just as good. Fast, friendly, and delicious food. Prices are average, but worth it. No drive thru and the parking is limited, but the large clean dining room and of course the food make it worth going.
Pastrami Dip - 5 🌟! Thick Fries w/ Gravy - 5 🌟! Unexpected bonus chili - 5 🌟! The Hat has been in LA for a very long time and while I don't remember how I found them originally, I feel I go here once or twice a year on average. I used to get the smothered fries but it was so huge I would throw out over half the fries. This time I ordered small fries and a side of gravy and it was also a huge portion. There was a mixup and they gave me chili instead of gravy. When I asked for the gravy (it's a Canadian thing), they gave me the chili as a bonus. I know The Hat has multiple locations but I gravitate to this one. Easy to get to and parking is not a hassle. I'd be curious to go to the OG location once though.
Always have to make a stop at the hat when we are in town visiting the family best pastrami ever the chili cheese fries are delicious even take sandwiches home with us in a cooler always havw great service and it's clean
HATS OFF 👌👍❤ I ordered 3 sandwiches deconstructed style. They were delivered 10 hours later and 2 were immediately devoured! My "vegetarian" 110lb child ate a WHOLE sandwich by herself. I just had my last sandwich today. Amazing! Thank you so much the YUMMINESS and the care it took to taste so yummy 10 hours later and again 2 days later. Do you FedEx sandwiches? It was as big as my dog.
The Hat is one of must places I always stop by when I am in Pasadena area. I always get the pastrami sandwich. I am certain their other options are as delicious, but I always stick to one item. And if there someone else with me, I do get the chili cheese fries.
One of the best pastrami sandwiches I’ve had in a long time! And the chili cheese fries were enormously portioned and amazing!
Local burger chain with brightly-lit, clean stores. Huge burgers, very good pastrami & chili. Our meal was nearly $50 for 2 pastrami chili cheeseburgers and a chili fries - lots of fries - with pastrami. If we had gone for double cheese burgers, each would have been less than $10.
Visiting The Hat in Pasadena, California, was a delightful experience that left a lasting impression, especially with their pastrami sandwich and chili fries. From the moment I stepped into The Hat, the welcoming atmosphere hinted at the culinary delights that awaited. The star of the show without a doubt was the pastrami sandwich. Generously stacked with perfectly seasoned and expertly cooked pastrami, each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The meat was tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of fat to enhance its richness. Coupled with a soft yet sturdy bread that held its own, it was clear why this dish has garnered such acclaim. Not to be overshadowed, the chili fries were a revelation in their own right. The fries themselves were golden and crisp, providing a satisfying crunch with each mouthful. But it was the chili that elevated this dish to new heights. Rich, hearty, and packed with flavor, it complemented the potatoes beautifully, adding a comforting warmth that was both inviting and satisfying. Service at The Hat was impeccable, with friendly staff members who were both attentive and knowledgeable, adding to the overall positive experience. The ambiance of the restaurant, casual yet inviting, made it a perfect spot for both quick bites and leisurely meals. For anyone with a love for classic American comfort food, a visit to The Hat in Pasadena is a must. The pastrami sandwich and chili fries are standout dishes that offer a delicious testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality and flavor. It's a culinary experience that promises to delight and satisfy in equal measure.
If you're looking for subtle, delicate dining, keep driving. The Hat in Pasadena is where comfort food dreams go to get bigger, bolder, and absolutely better. This isn't just a sandwich shop—it's a Southern California institution dedicated to the art of excess. The Dish You Must Order: The star of the show, hands down, is the Pastrami Dip. Forget everything you thought you knew about pastrami; this sandwich is piled high with so much smoky, tender, peppery meat that you'll barely be able to close your jaw around it. It is pure, glorious indulgence. The Side Showstopper: Equally famous are the Pastrami Fries (or "Chili-Cheese Fries" if you're feeling wild). These aren't just an afterthought; the crinkle-cut fries are perfectly crispy and capable of holding up under a mountain of chili, cheese, or that signature sliced pastrami. A single order can easily feed a small army—or one very happy person. The Vibe: The atmosphere is pure, nostalgic old-school fast food—quick, efficient, and focused entirely on the massive portions. It’s a great, casual stop for lunch, dinner, or a late-night fix. In Short: The Hat delivers on its promise of "World Famous Pastrami." It’s an awesome, messy, and absolutely essential stop for anyone craving serious comfort food in Pasadena. Bring an appetite (and maybe a friend)!
One of the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever had. The pastrami, the bun is all amazing. I unfortunately don't live near one so I have to grab it when I'm driving by. Unfortunately I have no pictures because I immediately started eating it the moment I brought it to the table. 🤣
Stop for a bite to eat any time in LA area. Great food! Anything off the menu is a good pick. Good service, even when busy. Well known LA spot to eat, lunch is busy, but you'll still get your order pretty quick. A few locations throughout LA, so you can get your Hat menu fix, if in the area!
Hands off the best chili cheese fries in town! We tried their chili fries several times this year. Always the same and the best. The portion is huge! more than enough for 2 people. I love it with or without cheese. The fries are crispy enough, not mushy or over-crispy. The mexican cheese is just AMAZING. If you want a lighter version I am also obsessed with the tomato and pickles version as well!
Since my first visit as a kid in 1975 this place has never changed which is a comfort. We always get the Pastrami dip, onion rings, fries with chili and cheese on the side for better distribution and to make our own chili cheese onion fries. And whatever you do, don't forget to get an Orange Bang, also you get 1 refill free. From the first bite of food I'm transported back to being a kid. We go to the one on Lake.
This place is such a a steal. All of the reviews that said a pastrami sandwich and a gravy fry is enough for two people to split were right! The two of us could not have eaten more. That meals we had a full dinner for $20 for two! The pastrami dip sandwich was great. The gravy fries were fantastic. The gravy is delicious and the fries are nicely done so that they can stand up to the gravy.
Big portions for a great price. A place where you can get a loaded pastrami without breaking the bank, the sandwich is stuffed with delicious thin sliced portions of beef. Very popular place with great smiling staff and super fast service with a smile. Parking lot was full and it’s kid friendly.
Yummmy!!! Don’t forget to ask about their secret menu, we saw pastrami chili cheese fries on our way out that were on secret menu!! I got Turkey sandwich and added avocado, so good!! Hubby got pastrami dip but hot dip on the side so it wasn’t soggy. He ordered fries and wow plenty enough for 2-3 people!! Clean place delicious food and service was great!! Highly recommend!!
There are many locations to chose from but my FAV is Pasadena. Staff is super friendly and they always get the order right. It's fast its clean it's REALLY REALLY tasty. This is in my top 3 pastrami places in So Cal..... ENJOY 😉 12/27/23-UPDATE: Had a Ham & Swiss for the first time today.....Wowzers 👍🏻....... it was pretty RAD 😍
This restaurant is so very clean, not even funny. The staff is so nice and happy with big smiles. The food is AWESOME! I think The Hat has the best pastrami. The pastrami chili cheese fries are FIRE. I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD COME TO MY HOME TOWN! IF you ever have a chance to stop in a try, I highly recommendyou do.
Good food. The fries they give you are very generous. Had the "wet"gravy fries for the first time today and they were great. I was told to get them topped with pastrami next time. update: went again today and had a double cheeseburger for the first time, got an pastrami sandwich to eat tomorrow and shared some chili cheese fries with my wife...... SO DAMN GOOD. They really care about quality and consistency with the product as I watched the kitchen prep the food and each order delicately but swiftly out together!

I don't know what it was besides this wasn't "The Hat" that I'm used to going to almost my entire life in Upland cause this place was different. Same thee best pastrami sandwich west of the Mississippi river and very quick service and clean restaurant I think it was the price and fact that they didn't have any combos everything was charged separately that threw it off for me. Still the Best pastrami sandwich in So-Cal ☆☆☆☆☆ Oh and let's not forget about "chili cheese fries" #1
Home of the World Famous Hat, originally started in Boyle Heights by two Jews, migrated to Alhambra for many years and now various locations in Southern California including Pasadena. Great thinly sliced Pastrami. The Pastrami dip is $11.99 which is cheaper than its biggest Pasadena competitor Lucky Boys! Top of the line if you enjoy Pastrami!
Very friendly staff and hard workers 5/5. Atmosphere's clean 5/5. As for yhe food The pastrami sandwich is good 3/5 Sizes of it is smaller than imagined for the price . A bit on the dry side. I suggest asking for Au jus on the side and adding it. The fries were fantastic 5/5. Very thick and very crispy and fresh. It'll be nice to have a bit of seasoning on it thou. The burgers are okay 3/5.
It's ALL they say it is. I personally luv pastrimi and they have it down. It is 1 of the BEST. Flavorful not dry , juicy. Very good service and their system is efficient. We went at lunch time, had time to eat there and get back to work on time. Fries were a lil under cooked but overall it was good.
Stopped in for a quick bite. Always clean and bright dining area. The shared pastrami was great as always. We were looking forward to sharing an order of chili cheese fries as well (huge portion suitable to share), but was disappointing. The fries were barely done and as a result turned to mush. Will try to remember to ask for "well done" fries next time. There was plenty of chili and cheese, however lacking in flavor.
The cost of the food is very reasonable. The pastrami dip is very good, fries are massive. I recommend this place everyone.
We got a recommendation to come here since its known for its pastrami so I was really looking forward to my meal. It was ok, they give you a generous portion of pastrami as it overflows the bread, but I found the pastrami to not be super flavorful and actually kind of on the dry side. I had to add extra swiss and a ton of yellow mustard to get it up to snuff for my tastes in pastrami sandwiches.

Menu is solid old school Burger's Sandwiches Sides.... No shakes, salads, none of that jazz Prices are reasonable for amount of food, and filling you up. Accept phone orders. Easy to find location, generally parking available in lot Or surface streets. Customer Service - Professionalism... Does vairy. If they are; busy, not in the mood, tired... your left without. Worse yet attractive &/or normally friendly female customers. Get inappropriate over attention, and can even be treated openly disrespectful. .. if you find a customer of interest. No need to be so obvious or distasteful about it.
I order a bbq beef sandwich. It was processed meat on a hot dog bun. Fries were under cooked.
This establishment is known for their Pastrami Dip but I opted for a Double Cheeseburger $7.59 and a Hot Dog $3.99. They were ok but nothing to write home about. The burger wasn't very flavorful and the hot dog was somewhat small. On the positive side ordering was easy and the servers were friendly. Free parking in lot.
Very nice and clean location, very efficient service. First visit I enjoyed a "Pastrami-Sandwich" this was the best!! Today I ordered the "Steak -Sandwich" totally the opposite. They should change the name to "Lettuce -Sandwich" it had a miniature piece of burn meat. See photos and stick with the Pastrami
Food is pretty good. But the staff needs to understand what customer service means. Why am I getting attitude when asking for condiments? Serve people. I’m not asking you to put on a fake smile but understand what serving people means.
I tried the pastrami and pastrami chili cheese fries and I was disappointed. No flavor and it wasn't worth the money!
The staff and manager was extremely rude to me from the moment I walked in, presumably because they’re ageist and I happen to look really young, they apparently think that gives them license to be rude. The female cashier barked “Can I help you??” as if I’d walked in from Jupiter. And when I politely asked the manager for a water cup he threw the cup of ice down angrily. The customers also gave me weird, angry looks presumably because it’s a neighborhood joint and they didn’t recognize me. I’m originally from Pasadena (though a different part) and moved back, and this all made for an extremely unwelcoming, unpleasant, and downright hostile lunch experience. Ruined my day. And all due to ignorant mentality on the part of both staff and customers.
I got sick from the food! Had the runs for two days & stomach ache! NEVER AGAIN!!
chili cheese fries were absolutely terrible. No salt on the fries or the chili. i couldn’t really even tell what food product the chili was made of. this establishment is pure Cisco.
Most the workers look miserable and are rude especially tall Hispanic older guy with big bald pattern on top of his head was very rude and asked rudely what was i waiting for like if i was there for nothing and then i told him waiting there because i placed an order and he didnt even have my drinks ready as he asked me my ticket number and he got me my drinks and placed them there rudely. Very horrible establishment as if i ever choose to eat there then im going to get it to go.
I'm a fan of The Hat, but this location fails at the quality of their onion rings and the horchata. The Onion rings are under done and fall apart as you grab hold of them. The horchata is pure sugar and water and lacks tremendously in quality. There was no one in line and only one other customer inside, so there's no excuse for poor quality and oversight of these details that undermine the reputation of the franchise. Will not be coming back to this location.
Great place for pastrami or roast beef sandwiches. Sadly today 8/12/23 I visited the store in Pasadena. I watched them make the roast beef sandwich and they ran out of roast beef so they just shorted me and the $ 12.00 sandwich was worth maybe $3. The Glendora store still great. Never going back to Pasadena store. "Where's the Beef?" Not happy.
Hi, I’ve enjoyed The Hat in the past, but my recent pastrami sandwich was extremely disappointing. The meat tasted boiled out and flavorless, almost as if it had been over-steamed and lost all seasoning. It was inedible, and I had to throw it away. I’m hoping you can address this quality issue for the price you pay it should taste flawless.
