My wife and I enjoy coming to Kalaveras for the food and drink and the desert. The one thing they do on Wednesday they give paint classes limted seats make a reservation to space a spot.

We have been wanting to visit this place for a long time and we are so glad we finally made it happen! We ordered the margarita flight ($25), guacamole, and tacos (chicharrón, barbacoa, and asada). Everything was so fresh and delicious and the service was super fast and accurate. Take advantage of their happy hour and Tacos Tuesday special ($2 off tacos).

This was a great place for some delicious Mexican food with spectacular cocktails. From the get-go, I loved the patio area for its attention to Mexican culture. For food, we had the ceviche, aguachile, enchiladas con cameron and tres tacos de camaron. Everything was cooked perfectly! Be aware, they have delicious mezcal cocktails. You truly can't go wrong.

Management is A+, this place is top notch service. I’ve never had food come to the table so hot that I had to wait for it to cool down! The Carne Asada plate is 100, the taste, the tenderness of the meat, the flavors, all I can say is WOW! Had the guacamole too and loved the hand made tortillas! This place does not mess around. They have an awesome DJ as well it’s like a night club experience! The Flan was amazing. Staff was on point!! Everyone was super nice and attentive and customer satisfaction is number one! THANK YOU FABI 😊This is my new favorite place!

Pretty cool place. Authentic Mexican food and courteous service. The best handmade tortillas I've ever tasted in California. Delicious well crafted drinks. A separate bar and lounge area, which I found interesting. Good idea to keep children in the dinning room. Live music after 9 PM on Saturdays. Dancing and a cool ambience. Oh, and I got to sing and dance with the Band!

First and foremost the food and drinks were delicious. Food was warm and had lots of flavor. The drink was really good. I was able to taste the liquor which is very important. Restaurant was clean, not packed at all. The young lady that helped us was very professional and checked on us to see if we needed anything. Also recommended some drinks and desserts. I was surprised at the total I paid, I was expecting to pay more just because the food was good and the plate presentation was very nice. Music was at a perfect volume, not to loud or to low. I will definitely be going back.

This is a perfect example of what I talk about often. The place right down the street needs to put their nachos on a bigger plate. I think they actually give you more food than this place but it's all crammed on such a tiny plate than it's hard to eat... This place does a great job. I live right next to a Kalaveras but I've never noticed it. I also never noticed how many Kalaveras locations there were around the area. We were on our first date at a coffee shop nearby and I had brought up how hungry I was and she recommended we try this place out because we were both craving Mexican food. She recommended the Enchiladas Verde so that's what I ordered. It was delicious and that sauce was amazing! I highly recommend it to all you enchilada enthusiasts. Chips and salsa were also served with our meal which is always a nice touch. I don't remember our server's name but she was checked up on us very frequently and was just great overall. I will definitely be back in the near future and will try their drinks as well!

LOVE this place! Montebello location so far beats the others. Staff are on point, food is super yummy and cooked as you request!! Overall feel of the place is relaxing and inviting. Hillary was our waitress for the day, my birthday. Excellent service, great timing to check in and attentive. We have come back a few times since and will keep coming back to this location! LOVE!! They need to have that Mango drink on a daily too. Do not forget to try the guacamole with chicharron --yummers!!

Great place for drinks and food! The tortillas are fresh made and the drinks have a good punch to them. They have a lot of alcohol for drinks can't really remember all of them. We got appetizers and got full! The waiter was really nice and knowledgeable in the menu and drinks! They have events for almost every day, live marachi on Tuesday.

Awesome Margarita Tuesdays. Came in with my wife and some friends for my first time and absolutely loved their margaritas and food. We tried a pitcher of their mango and cucumber margaritas topped off with tamarindo and salt all around the glass which was super flavorful! Tried a couple tacos and churo icecream sandwich. Such an amazing experience. Service was excellent food and drinks on point!

The ambience was beautiful, service was great, the cocktails were so tasty, and the food was exquisite!! Can't wait to return 😊 The churro sandwich is a must!!

Traveling from Vermont to LA. This is hands down the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. Not only is the food AMAZING, the staff is incredible. They are so personable and accommodating of allergies and your likes & dislikes. The quesadilla and wet burritos are to die for. We are definitely coming back before we leave! If I could leave 100 stars I would!!

As a party of three, we had a fantastic time at Kalaveras! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially since we’re not from the US and needed some assistance with the menu. Our waiter suggested that a taco and a burrito might be too much food, which we appreciated. We decided to try all the different tacos available, and one of us had a burrito. The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff made our dining experience even better with their attentiveness and great recommendations. Highly recommend this place for both the food and the service!

Cane on for taco tursday and happy hour, and you just can't beat 1 dollar tacos all day! Lengua,pastor,Pollo,carnitas, barbacoa, and more! Only small negative is the portion of the carne asada fries was very small in my opinion but it might be because it's happy hour but still I don't think it's worth the 8 bucks. The atmosphere is great, I love the neon lights and beautiful dia de los Muertos arts found all over the restaurant inside and out. Outdoor seating is also available with heat!

This was my first time visiting Kalaveras in Montebello, and we went for lunch to celebrate Karla’s birthday. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed perfect for a weekday lunch outing. I ordered four tacos: pastor, carne asada, barbacoa, and chicken. My favorite was definitely the pastor full of flavor and really well prepared. The barbacoa was good but could have had a little more seasoning. I had the green salsa, which was mildly spicy and just right for me. For my drink, I ordered the berry mocktail. It was a bit sweet at first, but once I added some water, it tasted perfect and very refreshing. Some of the girls ordered the same tacos I did, while others tried the tacos de papa, and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. We celebrated Karla’s birthday during lunch, and she ordered a flan for dessert. We sang happy birthday, which made the moment feel extra special. The service was great friendly, attentive, and never rushed. The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and had a calm, pleasant vibe for a Tuesday afternoon. Another highlight was Taco Tuesday tacos were only $1.99, which made the experience even better. Overall, it was a really nice lunch, and I would definitely come back again.

Ambiance: Lots of wall decor and tvs in the bar area. I found it to be a bit dark personally.... think casino. Service: I went during happy hour right after work, and it seems to be really popular, so the place was pretty chaotic. (Wasn't a bad thing, just lots of people having a good time) I got everything I ordered fast and correct. I never had to wait long or ask multiple times. They were all very nice. Food: I really went for the cocktails, ended up trying 3, and enjoyed every single one. I also got the birria tacos, which were delicious and hot. I'd definitely be back!

First time at a Kalaveras and def coming back for more rounds! Now here’s my take on the prices for food and drinks. The food was delicious and service beyond and above. However, the food prices are okay for Mexican appetizers, and entrees. I don’t think it’s worth eating a $15-$25 dish if you’re already going to be spending $14 on cocktails. However, I really loved their rolled taquitos which was $14 something and their carne Asada quesadilla which was about the same price. As for their desserts I tried the churro and lava cake which was $14-$15 each. Like I said about their food, I don’t think their dessert is also worth that much for something small that’s not meant to be shared unless if you have a small appetite. Other than the food being expensive I enjoyed their cocktails and the ambiance so much that I’ll be coming back for drinks 🍹

Ok lets go! The food was traditional you wanted rice and beans Boom! The beans have chorizo nom, nom! I had the combo plate an enchilada and taco lots of flavor. The food was very delicious. I would give it a 5 star rating but they took long with my husbands food and his michelada.

Surprisingly good and food was very fresh. Always apprehensive of the chain Mexican Restaurant which consider Chips and Salsa as an appetizer but by my surprise they have several to choose from including their guacamole for your chips and my personal favorite the Esquite (Corn not on the Cob). We tried the Chicken Enchiladas but were disappointed with how dry the Shredded Chicken was but the sauce and beans more than made up for it. My Kalifornia Burrito was amazing, it was so good! It could've been better if they had not picked the first flour tortilla from the top (a good chef knows that the plastic pressing on the tortilla causes the edges to stale faster). The customer service was impecable, they couldn't be more friendly and attentive. Top, top, top service.

This place had a great atmosphere. I really enjoyed the micheladas, delicious. The art murals were cool and great place to take some cool pictures. For the food, I ordered the Asada tacos and Carnitas. The food was ok, handmade tortillas. It was a bit on the expensive side for tacos, $4.50 each. For 5 tacos and 4 beers I paid $77 dollars.

We also got their birria tacos, quesadilla, and a few other things. The service was superb and very nice. I got the horchata colada(it tasted good but the rum was a little too strong for me). If you like it loud with a dj and a bunch of music I recommend sitting inside. On the other hand if you don't they have a nice large patio outside that sits large parties. I definitely recommend this place and I can't wait to come back!

Norteno Style Mexican food, this should be a familiar flavor for anyone who has had Northern Mexican food, (Mastisa) Carne Asada is good, there rice is a dry-style Great service, all there servers so far have been very helpful and fast. The real treat here is there Tequila selection; with all three styles available. Tequila, Sotol, and Mezcal. I would suggest a Tequila (Jimador) as a starter, and a Sotol (Hacienda) for after dinner. Or if you are keeping it "Fun", a pitcher of "Chupacavras" is Ideal. ( Sugared rim, cucumber based drink)

Updating my review. They got better on prices and quality of alcohol beverages. The food CAN be very delicious, the problem is the inconsistency with portions and flavor. They recently changed the habanero salsa and it's not as great as the previous recipe and the rice is bland sometimes. The service CAN be very good depending on the waiter/waitress, I have two favorites.

We usually come for the drinks, they are pretty generous, Margarita flight is 👌🏽 Staff is friendly and the vibe is good. Doesn't get too wild at least for happy hour. Ordered apps a few times and they are decent, definitely recommend.

Plenty of parking that is shared with the plaza. Peak times can get very busy with long wait times so go early! Outdoor patio is a fun vibe for lunch or dinner. The tables weren’t the cleanest even after the waitress got a rag to wipe it down, maybe because of the cracks in the table itself. And it kept rocking too even when I wedged a napkin under one of the legs- kinda noting especially when you have drinks on there. Groups of people come here to celebrate various occasions so def not a quiet spot if that’s what you’re looking for. They have tables that can accommodate large parties and groups outdoors, not sure how it is indoors. Drinks are great! Who doesn’t love a good Maragarita!? Get a flight to try all the flavors. The chamoy rim is so delicious I wish they had been more heavy handed with that. Service was nice. Our waitress really helped me pick out the dishes that I wanted and was really patient.

Really loved the ambiance of this place. The food was delicious and customer service was absolutely great! Place was clean (except for restrooms) and well decorated. I really enjoyed everything, except for the margarita flight. I was expecting the servings to be much bigger for $35. The presentation is lovely, but they were like sample size. Aside from that, the food was great in flavor and presentation. They also have a great selection of drinks to choose from. I ordered the Pasta a la Diabla and loved it! Will definitely try again if I'm ever back in LA.

Kalaveras is a fairly large, family-owned/operated “chain” of restaurants throughout SoCal; you’ve probably seen one or two in your travels. It’s a “modern Mexican” restaurant in design and food offerings. The food at Kalaveras isn’t bad - in fact, my girlfriend said their Albondigas Soup might be the best she’s ever had. However, it feels like Kalaveras tries too hard to be “fancy” and somewhat froo-froo with their offerings, much in the same way as the Javier’s chain. In our opinion, Mexican food just needs to be freakin’ good - it doesn’t need to get lost in fancy presentation. And that’s kind of the downside to Kalaveras. We ordered the soup, several Asada Tacos, and Taquitos Dorados (some chicken, some potato). The taquitos were okay - but the dye-colored tortilla wraps are off-putting, and my girlfriend says it messes with the taste, which I agree with. My asada tacos were good and the presentation was great (dunno why the photo I took of that isn’t showing up in my images for this review when selecting which to upload - weird), but the marinade used kinda dulled the taste for me. Kalaveras is an upscale, “hip” and “fancy” place - and the prices reflect that, unfortunately. This is kinda a one-and-done situation unless there aren’t any other options nearby and you’re craving Mexican food. Like I said, it’s not BAD - it’s just too fancy for its own good and the higher prices detract from what could be an amazing go-to for Mexican cuisine. Restaurants often trip over themselves when trying to be something they’re not - or shouldn’t be. A great Mexican place should be warm and welcoming, nicely decorated, and the flavor explosion of the food should be the focus, even if it’s a burrito lying on a plate with hot refried beans and rice swamping together into melted goodness. Food over fancy, in our opinion. Kalaveras is trying too hard to be fancy.

I've been here a few times, and the food is consistent. I've tried their tacos gobenador, tacos chicharron, barbacoa, and carnitas.. all were tasty. The enchiladas were ok, nothing special, I feel most Mexican places use the same (or similar) green sauce. Overall good place to eat and have drinks! Good for large parties and happy hr.

The drinks were delicious 3 stars for that alone. La Kalavera is a refreshing lime margarita my favorite and highly recommend. The food lacked flavor. I went with a large group and we all ordered different dishes so I was able to sample a lot of the menu and each one was bland. The $9 quesadilla came with a quarter size container of sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo 😭. The vegetarian options are limited to 3 items. There is no A/C in the building so I would sit outside. The tortillas tasted like Northgate yellow tortillas and the size was the same. Maybe I went on a bad day. I won't be coming back to eat but I sure will be back for the drinks. The plátanos are tasty!

The food was okay, nothing out of this world. We had a brunch on a Sunday morning right when they open so it wasn't packed plenty of parking in the back. The restaurant itself is clean the service is good the food was very bland I got the chilaquiles and they weren't spicy so not much Chile, the rice didn't have a lot of flavor the beans were okay. I got a chamoy margarita which was super sweet.

Came to see what the fuzz was all about.. drinks were good they had a good selection of tequilas. This new torta on the menu was really yummy however the combination plate I got which was recommended by the bartender was not anything special. Rice and beans were not good, Chile relleno was bland and the potato hard taco was missing flavor. I did like the carnitas/chicharron taco. Overall an okay experience.

First off the decor flows, the ambiance is nice, and the service quick and attentive. Onto the food, we ordered ceviche as an appetizer and they add mango salsa to it. I liked how light it was and the mango added to it. However, it did need salt which we found under the tostadas once we were almost finished. After seasoned properly the ceviche was delicious. For the entrees we ordered a mushroom taco, kalavera salad, and kalavera carne asada bowl. The mushroom taco was tasty but needed salsa and lime. I was surprised they didn't include some on the plate. The salad was good and I liked the jicama, but it needed more dressing and it was small in portion for the price. The bowl was a bigger portion but the rice was dry and so was the asada. Best thing in the bowl was the salad. Maybe we didn't order the right items. Lastly, I loved their presentation for their shots; on a cutting board with a line of salt and an orange carnation. I don't know if I'd come back, but if I did I'd stick to their staple entrees.

Cool place. Affordable. 4-stars cuz the chef is in the back probably isnt mexican so i got a C-grade taco. 1 layer tortilla and it broke on me. They need to have it two layer. That's the standard anyway. The ingredients in the taco are not chopped to the proportion size of the tortilla. Salsa is good tho. Good spicy. Flavor profile is great tho

I usually refrain from posting negative reviews, unless it's warranted. The micheladas are basic, and bland. Had to order a side of chips for the queso fundido. We saw our waiter and staff walking around as if the place was packed, but kept on being ignored to refill drinks, and bring us the extras we ordered. The parillada was bland too, the asada was overdone and had a wonderful charred taste to it, YUM! The Pasadena location was on point when it was opened. Stay away!

Normally I like this place but tonight as we "type" this; the beer is flat, tortilla chips are stale, tostada is stale, queso fundido hard/dry. May not be a big deal to some but I also believe karaoke should not be on a Saturday night while spending the only night available to carry a conversation with someone. The place could be better with better management 🤷🏼‍♂️

(Go somewhere else; check the cost)It tries to be fancy so it keeps the cost high to make it seem that way. Service was slow, the waiter kept forgetting our order and they have no common sense. The surrounding areas at least have happy hours or specials. And was hoping for at least chips and salsa that are at least half decent but was disappointed 😞.

This was Lomo saltado? Pilaf rice?? Chimichuri??? When asked if I enjoyed my meal, I gave honest answer ( no) I had 3 staff members come to my table to challenge my honest opinion? Look at pictures?? I would NOT recommend to MY family or friends. Oh & the broken tortillas couldn't even make a descent taco. Ughhhhh.

Food is decent but waaay over priced. Their decor is a bit all over the place, the bathroom is instagramable but makes me wonder how long it’ll take for it to get gross and how hard it must be to clean the vines.. if they ever do. The prices say nice mid end restaurant, but the vibes says something else. Also saw a server vaping as she was approaching her table to take their order which was.. interesting. Went in on a Saturday when they apparently have karaoke night. Would recommend not going on that day. Having to sit through strangers singing, some of them terribly and with the volume way to high, not worth it. Overall a 4/10

Worst service I ever had, waitress kept getting lost. The food was super overpriced and the food was petite size portions. This place is way overrated. Garbage, I would definitely go somewhere else next time. They try to make their Mexican food foo foo, please give me a break. Focus on your customer service skills. Unfortunately two thumbs down.

We have been coming to this place for lunch for the past 25 years. Ever since this same place was known as La Costa. I'm aware that most likely management and/or ownership changes have occurred hence the change of name. Three coworkers and myself went for lunch last Friday March 10, we asked for ONE order of mixed fajitas and ONE order of taquitos dorados. Just entrees, plus a total of 6 Cadillacs and 2 Margaritas. We requested the waiter to put 1800 tequila instead of the Jimador. When the bill was given to us, we had the unpleasant surprise that it totaled $270.61. $270.61 for two entrees, 6 Cadillacs and 2 Margaritas? This included a 18% service charge as the tip was not included. What a rip off!!! When we asked the waiter as to why the bill was so high - he stated that since we upgraded it to 1800 instead of the Jimador - that is why the bill was high. Also he stated that according to the restaurant - the 18% service charge was if there were more than 6 guests or if the bill ran more than $200.00. So regardless of our group being only four persons- as our bill was $211.00 they had automatically included the 18% service charge. I might be mistaken, but since when does a surcharge apply if your bill runs higher than $200.00??? With this practice, instead of encouraging the customers to consume more - they are forcing the customers about watching what they order so they won't be ripped off with the 18% surcharge if the bill runs higher than $200.00 In a nutshell. Expensive drinks, expensive entrees, a mystery surcharge for spending more than $200.00. Go somewhere else if you can. We DEFINITELY ARE NOT COMING BACK

Terrible service. Ladies servers only waiting on their tips. The big guy at the bar rude and arrogant. NO service or internet. That's how bad their employees are busy on their phones -now they need firewalls for client's???? Expensive drinks and they're bad. If you want to donate to their corporation go-ahead. Not the place .

Not worth it I made a reservation and it seemed as if they didn’t even reserve the table before hand! They just put us in a table they put together out of unused table they found ! I waited 15 to 20 minutes to get any service and nobody came to our table and we decided to leave and it wasn’t until we left that they realized we where even there

Waitress didn't introduce herself as I walked in.Also it took about a good 5 minutes plus before acknowledging me to offer a drink on a Tuesday & not bizzy at 230pm.Also when my drink came Waitress was her cell phone & didn't even acknowledged the thank you I said. I won't be coming back. Now Tacos Gueras has a lunch truck and those tacos are the BOMB!!! for $2.50 Location Cesar Chaves and Alma just be careful with her Chile cause is HOTTER than King Taco!!🤣

I came here with my lady , for mother's Day brunch. Got here around 2 pm .. had a reservation. They seated me in a booth that had the ordor of a dirty diaper! When I asked what the smell, I was told, it maybe the air conditioning! I didnn't know how to receive that answer. But whatever. Later , when met with the check , I noticed I spent $101 dollars on subpar menu and service. I'll never eat here again. Especially on a special day like mother's day! I'm embarrassed to have invited my girlfriend on her day of celebration. Wow, Kaleveras !!! Shame on you !!!! Don't go here in Montebello!!! The chips were stale, the mimosas were served in a kid party cup, and the food was horrible ... I should've just cooked at home!!! Happy Mother's Day!!! 👎🏾
