I recently visited Udupi Palace on Valencia St. for some South Indian cuisine, and overall, it was a great experience. The food was delicious, especially the thali and dosa, which we highly recommend. The idly and vada were also good and did not disappoint. However, the panipuri we ordered was not up to the mark. It didn't quite meet our expectations. Despite this, the overall dining experience was positive, thanks to the excellent service and the quality of the other dishes. If you're looking for authentic South Indian food, Udupi Palace is definitely worth a visit. Just maybe skip the panipuri and stick with their strengths!!
Recently a friend and I had made lunch plans for the end of the year (we work together and we don't usually see each other again for months). She recommended Udupi Palace and I'm so glad she did- I've had Indian food before when I lived in LA but not since I moved back to the Bay. I'm pescatarian so a veggie friendly menu that is also budget friendly. WIN WIN! We ended up inviting other colleagues and we were a group of 14 in total on a Monday afternoon. We called ahead of time to make sure they could accommodate us and it was no issue at all. The ambience gives very casual and cozy. The service was 10/10- Jacob was our server and although I didn't ask I almost felt like he could have been the manager or owner. He gave us full attention, made sure our water glasses were full and when I say as soon as we all ordered- the food was coming out piping hot and fresh! I was impressed. Location: It's located in the Mission off Valencia- a short 10 minute walk from the BART station (24th/Mission). Lots of culture all around. I took pics of everyone's food including mine: Some our selections were the paper dosas (which is like a thin like crepe fried up)- they were huge in size...well very long. See the pics A number of people ordered different types of dosa combos, we had veggie byrani and I had the lentil/veggie soup which was perfect on a chilly day. One of the dosas came stuffed with potatoes and another combo had some sort of salsa on top and came with a mini fried donut of sorts. Great variety of options to choose from. I would highly recommend checking this place out for great hospitality, good warm food served with care and a price menu that won't break the bank. I see they have a location in DT Berkeley as well. One other thing to mention- online it does mention if you are part of a large group (over 6 or 8)- they automatically charge gratuity. However, when our receipt came- that was not the case. We assumed it was added in and realized quickly it was not automatic so just check your receipt. ENJOY!
such a wonderful cozy and casual dinner spot!! this was my first time trying an uttapam, idli, and medu vada and they were all great. my photo is of my plate partly eaten because it looked so good I forgot to take a picture before digging in. they were busy on a Saturday night but the staff was very nice and attentive. we had a delightful time here it feels like a true gem of a restaurant. would absolutely recommend
Walking into Udupi in San Francisco is like stepping into a culinary portal that transports you straight to the heart of Karnataka. My recent visit was a true revelation, a testament to the fact that authentic, soul-satisfying South Indian vegetarian food thrives right here in the Bay Area. We went on a quest for the perfect "tiffin" experience, and Udupi not only met our expectations but completely surpassed them. Our journey began with the classics, and oh, what classics they were! The Idli was a cloud of perfection—steamed to a pillowy softness that dissolved on the tongue. Paired with their vibrant, flavourful sambar and a variety of chutneys, each bite was a symphony of tangy, spicy, and savoury notes. The Vada was a revelation of its own. Crispy on the outside, light and fluffy within, it was everything a good vada should be, with a delicate hint of spices that made it utterly addictive. But the real showstoppers of the meal were the dosas. The Masala Dosa was a work of art—a paper-thin, golden-brown crepe with a crisp, lace-like texture, generously filled with a perfectly seasoned potato masala. It was pure comfort food elevated to an art form. The Masoor Masala Dosa, however, was a pleasant and innovative surprise. The addition of lentils gave it a richer, earthier flavour and a satisfying texture that made it stand out from the crowd. The individual portions we tried were equally impressive. The Upma was a testament to the chef's skill—light, fluffy, and packed with flavour from mustard seeds, curry leaves, and vegetables. It was a humble dish done with true grace. The Pongal was another star; a creamy, comforting rice and lentil porridge, beautifully seasoned with black pepper and cashews. It was a warm hug in a bowl, perfect for a cozy afternoon. The Onion Poha was a delightful discovery. Unlike the flatter versions you often find, Udupi’s was perfectly moist and tender, with the gentle sweetness of onions and a medley of spices that made each spoonful a pleasure. It was a simple dish, but executed with such finesse. And finally, to end our incredible feast, we had the Kesari Bhath. This wasn't just a dessert; it was a grand finale. The vibrant orange hue, the fragrant aroma of saffron and cardamom, and the rich, buttery texture studded with nuts—it was pure bliss. It was the perfect sweet conclusion to an overwhelmingly amazing meal. Beyond the incredible food, the service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was bustling yet comfortable. Udupi San Francisco isn't just a restaurant; it's a destination for anyone seeking a true taste of South India. Whether you're a seasoned fan of the cuisine or a curious first-timer, this is the place to be. We left feeling not just full, but truly nourished, with a promise to return soon to explore more of their menu. This is, without a doubt, a five-star culinary experience.
Ordered the idly-vada combo and Malabar parotta and veg thali everything was super tasty and the service was quick. I was happy to know the owner is from Udupi, and they even make the idlis in the traditional Udupi shape. Definitely recommend if you’re missing Mangalore/Udupi-style food!
The food here was absolutely awesome, and the environment was super cozy. It seemed like they might have been a bit understaffed when I visited, as the guy was struggling to manage everything, but he did his best to accommodate everyone. Despite that, the food arrived quickly and was incredibly tasty. You should definitely try their dosa—it's a must-have!
Amazing food. Excellent service. The dosa and curries are delicious. Highly recommend!!!

Best place in san francisco for South Indian food. They have great dosas and a lot of varieties to try. We had ordered masala dosa, spring dosa, chole bhature and mango lassi. 5/5 for the dosas, they were crispy and filled with potato stuffing and the chutneys were good too. Chole bhature is a 4/5 The mango lassi was the perfect way to end our meals , very smooth and delicious
I'm a white person but I really like Indian food, make it at home, go out for it, so I'm not clueless and I am always looking for another delicious place. Some reviews say the service was bad or the dosa was sour, but that wasn't my experience. The service was fast and friendly, the dosa was crispy and delicious and both the cauliflower and the spinach fillings were delicious and full of flavor. They were well spiced but weren't especially hot spicy so those looking for a little more kick should ask for it. All the sauces were also flavorful and the sambar was delicious. The price is honestly unbeatable for San Francisco, less than $15 a person for a huge dinner is so hard to get. Would happily return. As for atmosphere, it's not a fancy place for a romantic candlelit dinner, but a great casual place to take family or friends.
Solid spot for South Indian food. I love South Indian food and eat a lot so had to try. Not a lot of South Indian food in SF, this is a decent option but nothing like what you can get in South Bay. Got a butter rava masala dosa and it was solid, flavors were all good and the chutneys were great. Dosa could have been crispier. Sambar was pretty good too. Would probably come back if I’m craving South Indian and not willing to drive all the way to Sunnyvale or something
This place is a great food joint with a mix of flavors. The dishes were well-prepared, though the sambhar could use a bit more authentic sourness, and the chole were a touch too sweet. However, the bhature for the chole bhature were fantastic! The rest of the dishes are perfect for anyone feeling nostalgic after being in the States for over a year. It's a must-try if you're in town. The ambiance could use some attention; there were spider webs on the ceiling, making it feel like the spiders are holding a web design contest! The restroom area was also a bit messy. Overall, it's a charming spot with room for improvement.
Ordered takeout. The main food was great. Ordered a dosa & pongal. \nChutneys were good. But their sambar was just very watery with no veggies. That was a disappointment.
So everytime I dine in the restaurant the food has been fantastic. Not the same case for delivery orders though as they miss the chutney's most of the time and sometimes the dosas are broken apart.…

Good prices on solid food but the service is very lacking. I want to go back for the food but the thought of these multiple interactions makes me want to avoid. Cramped seating and the servers don't care to give you any recs and seem to not even eat the food. They missed a plate but failed to communicate any of it so we waited a good while as we assumed it was being served sporadically as with all the dishes. No remorse or any apology which indicates a distasteful lack of care. Also they random dropped off food onto the table without a word. It does seem like this place once was a solid experience but is now all outsourced, soulless, and profit driven. We also went when it was on a non busy 4p Saturday. Dosa was awesome, 2 other dishes were good, and the rice was not good.
Tried a few items here: • Mysore Masala Dosa – 1/5: Not great. The dosa tasted sour, which ruined the experience. However, the staff did replace it after I complained, which was appreciated. • Bisi Bele Bath – 4/5: Very tasty and comforting, but the side dishes didn’t add much. • Thali with Puri – 4/5: The chole curry with puri was the star—absolutely delicious! The rest of the thali items were just okay, and the portions were quite small. Overall, the experience was a mix of highs and lows, but the flavorful dishes like Bisi Bele Bath and puri-chole made it a worthwhile visit.

They use stale ingredients, the oil they used had some sort of a smell, the idli was not hot at all and all the batter: dosa idli vada batter were sour and not fresh. I feel like they use baking soda or something I felt bloated and fussy after I ate here. Overall I would rather travel one hour and get a good quality food in the Bay Area rather than have here.
I had a very disappointing experience at Udupi Restaurant. The service was extremely poor, and the food had no salt or flavor at all. When we politely asked them to remake the dish, the staff responded rudely and in a very disrespectful manner. It’s unacceptable to treat customers this way. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for good food or decent service.
One of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. We went here for breakfast only because no other decent place was open. For the first 10 minutes, no one even bothered to take our order. When the food finally came, it was a disaster: • The filter coffee was weak and sad. • The idlis looked anything but fresh. • The rava dosa was the worst I’ve ever had—stale, soggy, and with onion chunks so huge they were inedible. I was already considering leaving the food untouched when the absolute deal-breaker happened: a black mouse was literally hanging above where we were sitting. That was it—we jumped out of our seats and left immediately. To top it off, the staff had zero concern for hygiene or customer experience. They still charged us nearly $60 for this horrific experience, without a single word of apology. Disgusting food, unhygienic environment, and careless service. Avoid this place at all costs.
