A great little hidden gems up in the hills. I stopped by the three days. I was up there for a weekend and if it was closer, I’d be there every morning.
Been stopping here for breakfast the last two days while our mountain home is being worked on. Have past by here for over Thirty years, finally enjoying what they have to offer. Excellent coffee.
Wow, what can I say? I thought Twain Harte was void of any establishments other than "dive bars". This place is a good breakfast stop by San Fransisco standards. Even if you're vegan, they'll easily accommodate. I chose the veggie and black bean burrito, and it was simply amazing. It hit the spot.
This is a must stop place for our family! We start every trip to the high country with a delicious pastry and cup of coffee. The artichoke and jalepeno is our children's favorite while I am a huge fan of the quiche!! Everything here is so worth the drive!! :)
I have been coming to the shack for 8 years. Great cinnamon rolls and just in general great food. It has become a tradition with our family and those that stay at our cabin to get food from the shack. Their burritos are really good.
Friendly, professional, and detail oriented staff. We had sandwiches, avocado toast, acai bowl, and chai tea. Everything was delicious and was prepared quickly. Quaint atmosphere indoors, and cute outdoor seating area under the trees. You must go if you're anywhere in the area (Pinecrest, Cold Springs, MiWuk, Twain Harte)
Ordered a 9 inch birthday cake - german chocolate. It was one of the best ever cakes with rich taste and not just cream and chocolate. All adults and kids loved it. Make sure you pick the cake up by 2PM though otherwise they don't have space to store in the fridge.
This was a gem to find! They have amazing savory breakfast options like egg sandwiches and breakfast burritos in addition to a whole pastry line up that’s hard to choose from. Also I had a smoothie that was perfectly done, not too sweet.
The vegetable quiche was very good, but the caramel cinnamon rolls was unreal. Was not brave enough to try the bacon caramel cinnamon roll.
These ladies work their butt off. Their customer service is top notch. Their food is amazing. They deserve all the business they receive. Went up to dodge ridge for new years. And they were probably the only place open for food or coffee. We were excited to have amazing food and drinks before going to the snow.
Wonderful place. Staff is incredibly nice. Pastries and snacks are some of the best around. Coffee is great. None of that watered down perko's coffee here. Lots of variety as well. If you haven't yet you really should stop by and say hi. Maybe on the way up to enjoy a day on the slopes?
A wonderful place with fantastic food and a superbly welcoming team of staff. I was running a motorcycle ride with 14 bikes and we went 15 miles out of our way to get to this place because of the excellent reviews. We were so pleased we did!!! Alicia was there to welcome us and find out more about our adventure while the delicious food was being prepared. This little place does BIG business and it won't be long before they need to expand!! You MUST visit this place!!!
Cozy cafe - FABULOUS food. We ordered the breakfast burrito, which was a generous portion. We also ordered some bakery goods that were fantastic. Especially the cinnamon rolls.
Everything offered sounds or looks amazing, and I have never been disappointed. Excellent sandwiches, tasty baked goods, a variety of unique drink options, and of course, friendly service make this our favorite place to stop on the way back to the valley.
Great place for breakfast. Sunday is eggs Benedict specials. I had a breakfast burrito. Staff is super friendly. Just had breakfast there again with my good friend. Excellent service and food. Brought a buddy today that had never been. He loved it. Had breakfast.
The best place in this area! Greatest breakfast burrito and pastries!
I travel over Sonora Pass every three or four years and I time it to stop for coffee and sandwiches here. Outstanding small business.
Always a wonderful spot to stop. She had gluten free, an Amazing bakery. It's worth every bite. It's real food. The burritos have cut up vegetables upon request. Alicia understands the word.. Yum 😋
Delicious little bakery in the forest! We stopped here for lunch after a great hike. Sandwiches were fresh and tasty, cookies were awesome. Picnic tables off to the side looked out onto the trees. Lovely!
Love the vibe, food and coffee here!
Great little spot for dessert. Great variety of desserts and friendly service... Unfortunately we pigged out before I could get any pics, because it was too good 🫠
Super cute coffee shop and bakery! Got some breakfast with açaí bowls, breakfast burritos and pastries. Everything was yummy. Wish I had tried a cinnamon roll, next time! Definitely worth a stop before starting your day.
Amazing prices, delicious food. If you're driving through this area, definitely stop by. If you're not in the mood for a full breakfast, just get some cookies and a coffee. They even have a great selection of wheat free treats!
I've been coming up to Pinecrest for decades and though I had seen this restaurant right off HWY 108. I had never stopped at the Sugar Shack before. Oh, how I wish I had discovered this place sooner. Great food, awesome service, great coffee and iced tea, sweet, wonderful pastries. All the other places along 108 between Sonora and Pinecrest pale in comparison to Alicia's Sugar Shack. Besides the great food, I have to compliment the owners (Alicia, yes I'm taking to you) for hiring the best, most friendly staff in the Sierra foothills. I'm coming back, again and again!
One of Twain Harte’s “have to try” spots if your visiting! Great menu with Wheat Free bakery items, Açaí bowls, and a full breakfast menu all delivered with a happy, cheerful attitude! My only regret was not buying more muffins and scones to take home with me! Do not pass this place by!
One of my favorite little spot tucked into the mountains. Love their coffee and breakfast sandwich!
So so good. Wonderful little place, super friendly staff, delicious pastries and hot food. We came back twice in the same weekend! Must try!
I was worried that being under new ownership would change the Sugar Shack for the worse but, dare I say, it changed for the better! The food and service seem to have improved. I had the best experience there that I've had in a while. Highly recommend!
Excellent healthy breakfast & lunch options AND great fresh baked goods every time. Very nice staff, and where I get my morning cappuccino. ....oh, and my wife favorite 🙂
Don't let the name fool you! Besides delicious sugary treats they have healthy options like smoothie bowls Etc. Even full on eggs/bacon breakfast and an array of breakfast and lunch specialty sandwiches. A great place to stop when up in the mountains. Not the biggest inside but the food is awesome!
I have been coming to Alicia's for years. My family has been coming to Twain Harte since I was a little kid and my parents moved up here full time a few years and ago and every time I come visit it's a ritual to stop here. Tho I can't each much of her pastries every now and again she will have a vegan option. However back in the day before becoming a vegan I would eat at least two Cinnamon rolls per trip!! They are some of the best in the world, not because of any special ingredient but because she puts so much love and hard work into her creations. Alicia is so sweet, and her daughters are proof of how wonderful of a person she is, cause they are equally as amazing!! They work hard to make everyone feel welcome and give something great! Everything is hands made fresh, the place can get packed I've seen lines out the door! She even supports local artist and the pictures on hey walls are by local artist and can be purchased! This place is a must-go-to spot in Twain Harte!!
So glad we stopped in for some sandwiches yesterday on our way up the hill! Place was clean & I'm glad to say they're requesting everyone wear a mask when indoors. Staff was friendly & they were cranking food out despite being slammed 👍 Pictured is "The Emily" which coincidentally drew the attention of my taste buds. Sandwich roll was soft, yet hearty & the ingredients were quality 👌 not pictured is the Italian sandwich that my man inhaled. I would have liked the option for salt & pepper/oil & vinegar, but I'm very picky 🙃 I also have a wicked sweet tooth & couldn't resist trying one of their blueberry cheese muffins. Yum!
A necessary breakfast stop if you're ever eastbound on CA-108 throughTwaine Harte. A quaint little breakfast nook offering an assortment of breakfast sandwiches and baked goods. Their breakfast sausage is amazing and the staffers, all the locals and visitors are friendly, helpful and offer great conversation and advice while you're waiting for your food.
We had Alicia’s Sugar Shack cater 2 breakfasts for our wedding weekend. They provided quiches, breakfast burritos, pastries, and fruit. Everything was absolutely delicious and everyone mentioned how absolutely delicious the meals were! They also did a dessert bar for our wedding dessert of cookies, shortbread jam bars, and brownies- all which were a huge hit! I highly recommend them for any catering needs or just to stop by and get a yummy meal or snack!
Delicious food, awesome people, and a great setting! Breakfast burrito was perfect because the potatoes weren’t too thick or overwhelming. (We added avocado & salsa 👌🏼) The toasted coconut and mango scone was amazing! Highly recommend this place 🤙🏼
This is hands down one of the best places to hit up if you're in the Tuolumne county area. Breakfast and pastries on point and never disappoint. I would suggest calling ahead during the weekends as it can get pretty busy and isn't the biggest place so it can get packed quick. Highly suggest the breakfast burrito and any of the sweets although my favorite is the pretzel chocolate toffee cookie. 11/10 would recommend
Best breakfast burritos you can get! Awesome staff, super friendly, nice down to earth quaint atmosphere, love this little town gem
Hands down the most delicious and fresh pastries, sandwiches, quiches, and more! Lots of vegetarian options too. The staff are always so friendly and the cozy warmth of the setting (inside and out) cannot be beat! Even on super busy holiday weekends, they keep the line moving and deliver outstanding food and service!
“The Sugar Shack” or “Alicia’s Sugar Shack” is a MUST! My husband and I honeymooned in Sonora for a week and ate their 3-4 times. Home Made Pastries (Blueberry Sweet Cheese Danish and the Coconut Scone were our favorites), house made kombucha Breakfast burrito, “Mixto Cuban Press,” were a few of our favorites. Staff is super sweet and everything made from scratch. Elderberries for the elderberry kombucha, foraged by the owner, ham is from locally raised hogs. Much love for the Sugar Shack, from the Cowarts🤎
Great place with indoor and outdoor seating. You can get "real food" for breakfast (not just traditional breakfast fare). Service is fast and the staff is paying attention. Generous portions. Ate there twice and same experience both times. Highly recommended for coffee and pastries or soup and sandwiches.
PCT cookie was great, breakfast burritos were great, coffee was great, staff was great! Can't wait to come back!
Great bakery and breakfast spot! They bake every morning - best tasting cinnamon rolls we have ever had! Great coffee too! Our kids beg us to go every trip! Excellent location to stop at as you head up the mountain to Dodge Ridge
This iconic roadhouse bakery is quaint, rustic, and just adorable. We enjoyed our many treats outside, under the pines and cedars, at one of the many outside tables. The place fills quickly in waves, and it's not uncommon for the kitchen to be a half hour out. The treats are fresh and homemade. The Jalapeño and artichoke turnover was FABULOUS!!!
Quick stop on a day trip at this great place. Had a bacon Carmel sticky roll that was amazing with a Chai latte. Prices are good and well worth the stop. Sorry, no pictures because the roll was so tasty I forgot.
The best! House made ganache in my Mexican mocha. Fresh, handmade pastries. Real fruit smoothie! Best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had with house roast pork and house made salsa.
Loved walking to this place in the morning. One of the biggest things the whole family misses after coming back from our vacation to Mi Wuk. They had something for everyone. Really good pastries, breakfasts, cookies, coffees, Italian soda, etc. Wonderful community atmosphere and a fantastic view across 108 into a mountain valley!
Edit: Love this place, as a tip to the flanders, it helps to squeeze up next to the fireplace and make the line wrap around like a whip...better to block the bathroom door than the front door. Always worth the wait! The pastries are so well done, fluffy, flakey, ooie gooie, crusty goodness.
ALICIA THE OWNER WAS NOT HERE WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 09, 2020 1:55 pm BUT JESSIE THE RESTAURANT REPRESENTATIVE WAS CORDIAL UNTIL LORI SOMEHOW MADE HER MAD AND I SAID IF YOU WILL YELL AT ME NOT MY WIFE JUST BECAUSE IT WAS NOT OUR DAY THE CHEMISTRY STILL COME AND ENJOY BETTER DAYS ARE AHEAD AT ALICIA SUGAR SHACK IN SUGAR PINE CA
Homely vibe inside the place. Huge selection of breakfast fare including eggs any style, granola, burrito, sandwiches, croissants and danish. Excellent coffee as well. Their avocado toast and eggs Benedict are outstanding. Friendly staff and the place is packed on weekend mornings.
The BEST!!! Such delicious and homemade food. Everything was amazing. Super nice service too. Must go!!
The sugar shack has a very large breakfast menu, burritos, full breakfast meals, pastries etc...! Helpful staff, and a cozy atmosphere. It is a great stop when heading up to the snow ❄️
Melissa and her team are so amazing at what they do. There are yummy food options for everyone and the coffee is literally the best!!! The staff is so sweet and kind. This is our Sunday tradition before heading out to hike. We love our Sugar Shack staff and delicious food.
Th best breakfast burritos we have ever had! Atmosphere was so great! Staff were kind and just wonderful! Yummy cookies too!
My favorite place to visit when we are at our cabin is the Sugar Shack, where I enjoy their breakfast burritos, cookies, and cold brew. I love the staff; they are always helpful and friendly. Definitely a must if you are in Twain Harte!
Hands down the best place in the area. We had sandwiches, fruit bowl, eggs toast. Everything was perfect. Their coffee and pastries are a must try. Would recommend 100%.
Very much enjoyed our breakfast at The Sugar Shack!! We have a place in Mi Wuk & have frequented for many years, before and after the change in ownership. We're always happy with each visit. Food, as always, was on point. I don't know the name of the purple drink. I think it was a kind of lemonade. It was a great recommend by the staff. 😋 They all know the menu and aren't shy to give you a suggestion which is so helpful because EVERY SINGLE THING looks amazing!! Enjoyed the banter with the cashier as well. You don't get that kind of friendliness as often on the day to day. We'll be back to the Shack next time guys! Thanks for taking care of the lot of us!! 😋🥰
We stopped to get breakfast on the way from Sonora to Dodge ridge ski resort. This little breakfast place offered lots of baked goods and breakfast meals. We got scones, cookies, cheese cake cup and everything was delicious. Also, the breakfast burrito, scrambled eggs, and breakfast sandwich were very good. The staff were friendly. There are some table inside and plenty of outside seatings.
Super small location but super worth it! During tourist season it's standing room only to order, but be patient with the staff as they are already catching a hard time from the non-locals. The young ladies at the counter are always so cheerful and helpful no matter what, and the food is hot, DELICIOUS and priced right. My fav is the breakfast burrito, with bacon and avocado!
I love this place! Great coffee and espresso drinks, Food is phenomenal, and the pastries are delicious! Also not to mention the beautiful view right in front. Whenever I'm in the area it is a must stop. Going Skiing at Dodge Ridge?... You know I'm stopping on my way. Staff is also very friendly
Great breakfast place to go to before sledding. I recommend going earlier in the day rather than later because this place gets busy! I had the breakfast Burrito with bacon and avocado. The combo with eggs, bacon, cheese, potatoes and avocado was amazing!! I also got to try the lemon blueberry cheesecake bars and a mango smoothie. The mango smoothie was unfortunately very watery, but the lemon blueberry cheesecake bars were so good we had to stop by the restaurant before leaving to get some more!! There was a bit of indoor seating, but with so many people in line, it was crowded so our group decided to sit outside. There was plenty of seating outside with views of the nearby forest and a small patch of snow that hadnt melted nearby that the kids could play with. There was also plenty of room for the kids to run off some energy or play hide and seek while waiting for the food to come out. Overall a very good local breakfast place!!
Second time and here and was even more pleased! Good espresso. Good people. Plenty of takeaway pastry options, plus oats or fruit bowl to pick from the counter. Full menu of sandwiches, toasts, and smoothie bowls you can eat in our takeaway. There are 5 picnic style tables inside this cozy little shop. None of the pastries are vegan but there are wheat-free options.
Thought I came here for snowboarding but clearly it was for the food! Great food, awesome people, and fast service! Get a sandwich to-go before going to the mountain! It's less expensive and tastes a lot better. (The Emily is amazing!) ***Update*** Went here again this season! Amazing as always. They don't make a bad item here. Been getting their veggie sandwich and it's surprisingly great (I normally get some sort of deli meat).
Very nice, helpful, and lovely people. Clean and organized. It was our first time here, and they helped us to get very yummy and delicious coffee, hot chocolate, cookies, and Smoothies. We enjoyed our new Jumping Monkey coffee😋.( hope I am right at the name of coffee). I recommend this place!!!! Thank you for great service!!!! Karmen and Friends!
Lived in Sonora/Twain Harte 20+ years. First time I ate here. The food was simple, but excellent! Had the breakfast burrito. Amazing! The service is amazing also. Very organized. The only bad about here is it is very small. Only 4 log style picnic tables to eat at. In the winter not too goid, but any orher time there are tables outside to eat at. Definitely coming back. The pastries are to die for!!!!!!!
Wonderful food and excellent service. Baked items are always tempting and incredibly scrumptious. I've had biscuits and gravy from lots of places, including the deep south and Portland, OR. The biscuits here are honestly the best I've ever had. Just the right consistency: flakey and light, but substantial. Highly recommended. Update: Apparently the establishment changed hands. The bakery items seem like a better selection, but the biscuits and gravy are only mediocre.
Good food and great staff. Staff was friendly and helpful. In the front where you order was a little tight but it goes to show you how good this place is because it was standing room only.
This place has amazing food and service. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because twice I have ordered an iced tea here. Both times I got a cup full of ice with only 1-3oz of tea in the cup. That is an unreasonably small portion for the cost and I highly recommend that they change this practice. Otherwise, the food and service are 5 star plus.
Very cute place! I have celiac disease and they made ma a gluten free sandwich that was incredible. They mixed up the order a bit, but I still had a gluten free meal. Very cute store front and very kind staff!
Small place, so we couldn't order and sit. They do have outdoor seating so you can bring a dog. And they don't offer the biscuits and gravy every day, so call ahead. Very good pastries. I had a blackberry and sweet cheese and loved it. And uncle swears by the Cinnamon rolls.
Cinnamon rolls were great and the sandwich ( The Emily) was really good!!! And the The CLAM CHOWDER was probably the best I have ever had!! Seriously you must try it!! Won't talk about the ladies, that will just have to be up to you!! I will just say The food is what would bring back here.
Small bakery and coffee shop that serves limited breakfast plates and sandwiches. I had the Shack Breakfast and added potatoes for an extra charge. It came with eggs made your way, toast, and a meat item. I chose the toasted pork and what a great choice I made! ☺️ It was so moist and soft that I wanted to have that meat for tacos with some salsa. The potatoes are heavily seasoned with herbs but were soft and not burnt in any way. My older son was disappointed that biscuits & gravy was only served Thursday through Sunday (we were there on a Monday). The best part was the friendly staff. They may have been training new people which was great because I would have liked to work there in that environment. Such great staff!
Beautiful cozy bakery. Wider variety of gluten free options than im used to. They have gluten free bread for the sandwiches apparently. Lots of healthy options w breakfast plates and smoothie bowls. The lady was annoyed by me though because she had difficulty understanding me - that’s the only reason i didn’t put 5*. A little oasis in the middle of nowhere
Every time a certain employee is there, who I believe is the owner's daughter, I am ignored for several minutes and forced to wait while others who came in behind me order ahead of me. I am one of the few colored people who live right here in Sugar Pine and can't help but think this is the only clear difference between me and the others. Food is still great, but service like this should never happen to anyone. Happened again just today. Food still wonderful and so is Alicia, but I'm changing my review from 5 to 3 for consistent conduct of this employee.
Gluten free scone was meh. The staff seemed put out to just fry two eggs. The Danish had walnuts - did not expect that, and the Quiche, which I asked them to warm, was room temperature.
Daughter's acai fruit bowl was very good. My breakfast and cookies and pastries not so much. Was so looking forward to going too. Ordered 2 scrambled eggs and sausage with sour dough toast. Gave me large order of scrambled eggs. Issue was part of eggs were runny and undercooked while other parts were dry and overcooked. No seasoning. Looked like added too much milk perhaps since were very light yellow. Sausage order was just a small amount of crumbled up pieces of sausage that had no flavor and was served undercooked, grey colored. Overall was pretty terrible. Turned my stomach. Very disappointing. Bought a few cookies, peanut butter and snicker doodle and a savory pastry to go. Cookies were dry and lacked flavor and pastry tasted yucky, flavors not balanced.
Not a big fan of their cold brew as it was a little thin, tasted weak, and didn't seem to give me much of a caffeine pick-me-up that I was in need of. The strawberry danish was just OK. I got a sandwich and it was decent, but wouldn't order it again. The egg was cooked to absolute perfection though. The burrito was also just OK, came off a little plain. Lastly the pulled pork was not something I would order again, utterly underwhelming. Staff was extremely nice, kind, fun, and helpful. Would come back just for the crew.
Last month, on my most recent visit to Alicia's, I witnessed a local customer who the staff greeted by name harass and provoke another customer at length while in line, telling him he wanted him to get the F out of his town (an assumption made based on the other guy's ethnicity) and suggesting they go outside and fight. I brought this to the business' attention privately, acknowledging that it wasn't the businesses fault, but assuming they might care, and the owner was dismissive in the tone of her response. Even if she and the staff didn't know it happened, as they claimed (I provided the customer's name, description, and time of incident), an "I'm sorry that happened," or "Thank you for bringing this to my attention," would have been the professional response. I had been there three days in a row - the coffee and pastries are fine and the baristas are friendly - but I will go somewhere that is more respectful in the future. I am used to it in the foothills, but for out of towners who might care, the staff and most patrons are also unmasked indoors.
I have been going here for 10 years and this was our favorite place. But the prices went up and the quality went down. The food got smaller and a lot of different sandwiches or breakfast burritos topping are more money to add or don’t come with it anymore. I don’t want to spend 9 dollars on a burrito and just want to add avocado and sour cream. I would get an Emily sandwich on a croissant and now it is about 1/2 the size it use to be and the price went up. How is that fair? I won’t be going back for a while until the quality and quantity is more for my money.
I used to really enjoy this place but I feel they have really lost their touch. The pastry's are all incredibly doughy and undercooked. The potatoes are often undercooked. The smoothie bowls are literally all the same and never follows the ingredients the bored says which is very frustrating if you are allergic to anything or wanted what you ordered. If you're only getting coffee then great otherwise take your chances.
The food is always good, I go often, however anytime I put in an order the person on the other line is very rude, pushy, and makes the whole encounter uncomfortable and feeling rushed. I wouldn't leave a bad review if it wasn't a reoccurring problem that I have and have heard from many others.
I came here because a friend of mine recommended it and I was visiting the area. The food was okay (not super special, definitely overpriced). The wait staff was not helpful. First, they charged me the incorrect price for items and then instead of refunding this and charging the correct amount, they simply charged me a second time. Finally they claimed they could not provide a receipt and I did not find out about the double charge until after I looked at my credit card statement once I returned home. Bogus!
The man behind the counter seemed annoyed to have to speak to us. We asked for a plain croissant and he said he needed to check and see if they had any today. He came back and said they do have them, but are only using them for sandwiches. Makes no sense to me why you would NOT sell a customer something that you have readily available. I had already ordered a burrito for my other daughter, but regret not cancelling the entire order and leaving. I have been to the sugar shack several times and it seems like the service has gone downhill each time. Almost everyone working there looks like they would rather be anywhere else. It wouldn’t kill you guys to show any semblance of gratitude to your customers. Also, the burrito we got was made wrong. I asked for just eggs and cheese and it was loaded with potatoes. We will not be back, but not to worry, I don’t think they care.
I don’t know if it was a fluke, but our roast pork Benedict’s were cold. Hollandaise sauce tasted like melted string cheese. We were there on a Sunday during brunch
