Hatch is a hidden gem in downtown LA, famous for its yakitori. You can get good variety of yakitori from chicken to beef tongue and unagi, and yet it offers much more than that. Their house salad is the best salad I have had for a while. The Yaki onigiri is my family favorite, while my personal favorite is the soft shell crab taco--juicy and delicious. The staff members are attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is busy and live but not too crowded. I highly recommend Hatch for your next food adventure in DTLA.

HATCH in Downtown LA is one of those spots that hits you with flavor, vibe, and personality the second you walk in. Tucked inside The Bloc, it blends modern Japanese izakaya energy with a fun, laid back atmosphere that makes it perfect for date night, pre event bites, or a chill dinner with friends. The yakitori is the star perfectly grilled, juicy, and packed with that smoky binchotan flavor. The chicken thigh, pork belly, and lamb lollipops are must orders. Their squid ink karaage? Wild. Crispy, bold, and totally unique. Even the small plates go hard corn fritters, raw bar options, and those addictive sauces that make you want to order “just one more.” Drinks are just as strong. Their Japanese whiskey selection is legit, and the highballs (especially the green tea one) are refreshing and dangerously easy to sip. Service is friendly, the space is stylish without trying too hard, and the outdoor patio at The Bloc gives you that breezy DTLA moment. A creative, flavorful, and super fun izakaya experience in the heart of downtown. Worth the trip every time.

I've been to Hatch at least four times, and the atmosphere has been consistently terrific. Located in a mall in the heart of DTLA, we got very lucky in regards to parking and found a free street parking spot immediately outside of Hatch - so that was a great way to kick off my most recent experience there. In terms of flavors, however, some items are far more flavorful than others. The most recent time I dined at Hatch, I ordered the prix fixe menu. Now, I usually don't prefer the prix fixe because I enjoy selecting my own dishes. But I felt like trying something new that evening. And true to my intuition, I think I would've enjoyed my experience more had I ordered a la carte. I wasn't quite full after the prix fixe experience, so I did order agedashi tofu and eel, which were both delicious - and honestly my favorite items at the end of the evening. Previous times I ordered cocktails at the bar, which were always phenomenal, but this time I didn't. Overall, a good experience and enjoyable for a date night. IG: @dawntc

Loved our dinner at Hatch. Service was great- very attentive. When we could not decide which sake we wanted, they let us taste a couple. Then you get to choose your own glass - which is a fun little experience. Food was so delicious. Everything we tasted was phenomenal. Love that they have small plates so you can taste a variety of things. Definitely get the ahi tuna and the mushroom- with hot sauce. The vibe is fun. They have fun sayings on the employees shirts. Great place to go as a group, couple or solo.

Perhaps my favorite meal of the year. We had dinner here the other evening. There is ample parking available in the parking structure. The ambiance is ultra-modern. We went with the tasting menu. You get their favorite items for $55 a person. And many of these will become your favorite items as well. Even though they have a full bar, we decided upon a mocktail. They have a seasonal one and it was nice and refreshing. The miso corn soup begins the tasting menu. The sweet grilled corn balances nicely with the salty miso soup. The tuna tataki handroll is a thick cut slice of tuna. The tomato and shallot salsa pairs perfectly. Next is the miso beer spare rib. The rib is marinated in Sapporo and the mest just falls right off the rib. I could have eaten a full rack of these ribs. Their most popular item, the squid ink karaage is next. The best tasting karaage I have ever had is taken to another level when you add a squeeze of the fresh lime and dip it into the black garlic ranch dip. The yakitori skewers are next. The ahi tuna yakitori is thick cut and absolutely delicious. The mushroom party yakitori is so flavorful. The chicken meatball yakitori needs to be mixed in the perfect sous vide egg yolk for another level of flavor. The crispy on the outside onigiri is the perfect ending to the tasting menu. If you still have room, get the grilled Fuji apple. It is a baked Fuji apple with ice cream, fresh berries and a sesame butter cookie. If they sold the cookies, I would buy a dozen. Fantastic service and easily my favorite meal of the year will make this a place I want to come back to time and time again.

The yakitori selection is a must: Pork Belly and Corn a la Elote were standouts🌽🥓 For dinner, we had the Royal Hamachi, Wagyu & Wasabi yakitori, and Let’s Bone Marrow—served with grilled garlic mochi bread (trust me, don’t skip it😋). We basically ordered every item in happy hour menu, and they were surprisingly good, usually I wouldn’t expect food quality to be good in a fusion style izakaya. I would highly recommend the chicken heart and inked karaage. I can give the food 5 ⭐️ if just for happy hour menu. The beef tongue and lamb rack in the regular menu, however, it’s just ok. Also beef tongue is more like braised beef.

I’d been hearing good things about Hatch, so I finally decided to check it out. It’s located in Downtown LA with parking available in the structure — just don’t forget to get validated or it’ll cost you a lot. Reservations were easy to make through Resy, and we happened to go during DineLA. The vibe is modern and stylish, definitely a good spot for a date. The menu is American/Japanese fusion, and it works really well here. We ordered one DineLA set menu and added a bunch of items à la carte so we could try more things. A few standouts for me were the Squid Ink Karaage, Corn Tempura Tower, Wagyu & Wasabi, and the Grilled Rice Ball. Honestly, everything we tried was solid. They even have Japanese apple soda, which was super refreshing. Overall, I was impressed. The food had more flavor and creativity than I expected, the service was smooth, and the atmosphere made it a fun night out. I’d definitely come back again — just don’t forget that parking validation.

Solid spot for Japanese skewers and small plates. We tried the Tuna Tataki Handroll, Miso Beer Spare Ribs, Squid Ink Karaage, Yaki Onigiri, Ahi Tuna Skewers, and Chicken Meatball Skewers. Everything was really good—the ribs were tender, the skewers had nice flavor, and the small bites were all well done without feeling over the top. The spot is tucked inside The Bloc in DTLA. It’s laid-back enough to pop in after work or for a casual dinner. Drinks are solid too, and the menu makes it easy to share a bunch of different plates without feeling like too much. Overall, it’s a reliable choice if you’re in the area and want some good Japanese eats without any fuss.

All the courses were tasty, in particular the ribs and squid ink karaage. Their cocktails are unique - I ordered one with smoked corn and whiskey. Service was excellent on a quiet Sunday evening. They also validate parking. If you sit near the front they also have movies playing on a projector, which is kind of cool. Definitely would return.

Although people might know Japanese cuisine for the sushi and ramen, the eyes of the masses are just beginning to peer into the other wonderful culinary delights Japan has, including yakitori. This world is filled with flames, small plates, and of course, beer. HATCH does a great job of bringing the spirit of yakitori to a more mainstream audience and they bring their own style with them. Design/Location Once you walk in you see the restaurant is comprised mostly as a long, wide hallway. On one side you see a long row of tables with bulbous lighting hanging from above. On the opposite you see a large continuous slab of dark black quartz (or marble) countertop running from the entrance to the kitchen. A large bar comprises the entrance part of the running countertop whilst long shelves on the walls are ornately dressed with liquor bottles, Japanese novelties, and bottled mystery delights. It screams trendy but functional. Food The food is the star of the show. I was lucky to go to DineLA and try their menu which had sample versions of their menu items. Here's what I felt about them. Miso corny soup - Japanese cuisine usually utilizes miso soup at the beginning of a meal to help start getting the digestive system. This version is no exception. Tastes just like a traditional miso soup with the only difference being the slight sweetness of the roasted corn in it. A traditional start to get your appetite going. Tuna tataki hand roll - appreciated this being a solid piece of tuna instead of chopped up. Tastes very fresh but that's the extent of its flavor. Luckily, we were given some pickled Japanese cucumbers on the side and that added a nice note of brine to the hand roll. Miso beer spare ribs - easily a highlight of the dinner service. Slow braised for over 4 hours and then cooked over fire the caramelized parts have a nice crunch to give a hint of sweetness. It is super tender and easily falls off the bone. It's the best of sweet and savory. Squid ink karaage - a satisfying karaage where it's not too dry but with a black exterior instead of the typical golden brown. Their version of karaage is infused with squid ink in the batter. Served with a black garlic ranch on the side this is best served with lemon squirted on top and eaten with the pickled beet. Chicken meatball skewer - a staple of any yakitori and izakaya you would go to in Japan, HATCH's version is as a good as any you'll find in Japan. Glazed with their yakitori sauced the caramelized areas mixed with the meat gives a delicious bite of chicken. Mushroom party skewer - definitely a party of different mushrooms, this includes shiitake, button, and oyster mushrooms with seaweed flakes on top. The mushrooms take on the flavor of the fire and the delicious yakitori sauced brushed on it. Every bite is a good one and dare I say, a party in your mouth. Hokkaido scallop skewer - the scallops come with a spicy yuzu mustard and when you bite into it it'll slap you in the face and call you Sally. The sweetness of the yuzu hits the back of your tongue and as the sweet, soft scallop lands on your palate it's an enjoyable bite texturally. Yaki onigiri - as a Korean 누룽지 is a staple of favorites which is the crispy rice you find at the bottom of a hot stone pot for a 비빔밥. The crispiness of this dish brings that nostalgia back and it makes for an item that stands on its own but can be a perfect pairing with any of the meats presented. I wish this was brought before the skewers because as the last dish it was too plain. Conclusion HATCH has got it going on and they have a good energy to them. A perfect location to enjoy dinner with a group, a date, or even solo the food will keep you satisfied and it's a good starting point for a weekend night. If you've never had izakaya or yakitori before but always wanted to try in a more American friendly atmosphere, this is your entry point.

The ambiance is definitely a highlight—good mood lighting, nicely decorated, and tables spaced out so you don’t feel cramped. If you can, sit at the bar; it looked like a fun place to chat with the staff. Food was hit or miss. The squid ink karaage was unique and delicious—the chicken was fried perfectly and it looked amazing when served. The hamachi was fresh, sliced just right, and came with a citrusy sauce that had a nice kick. The yaki onigiri was good, though I personally would’ve liked it grilled a little longer for more crunch. The skewers were mixed: Pork belly: chewy and hard to pull off the skewer since it wasn’t charred enough. Eggplant: sweeter than I prefer. Chicken heart: my favorite—tender and flavorful. Chicken meatball: decent but nothing special. Hokkaido scallops: didn’t work for me—the sauce covered up the natural scallop flavor, which felt like a waste. Overall, Hatch is worth trying for the atmosphere and a few standout dishes (the karaage especially), but I’d hesitate to go back unless the kushiyaki itself improves. Great for a quick bite and drinks, but not somewhere I’d go for the skewers alone.

Food was great minus my lamb skewer. Service was awesome. Ambiance was dope. Forgot to take pictures. sorry Food: Very modern take for Japanese food. Ordered a coke (mexican glass bottle) that hit the spot, miso soup (without corn), seared tuna handroll, and lamb yaki skewer: Miso soup was standard miso soup and was perfect for the rainy day. Tuna handroll was great, and, I feel, was pretty fresh (the tomato took a bit from the flavor of the dish but nonetheless was still good). Lamb skewer was only one I didn’t like too well and didn’t finish. Was my last dish and kinda disappointed. Very salty (for a kushiyaki spot) which took away from the flavor of the meat. Only thing about the menu was the expectation of more meat options. Don’t want to only have wagyu as an option. Customer service was pretty great. Had a switch in servers but they were both kind and provided great service. Very friendly and helpful when answering questions about the menu. I was seated at the bar and the ambiance was great. Music wasn’t too loud. Chill vibe all around.

The presentations of the dishes were all nice and looked better than they tasted. Out of 8 plates we like 3. The squid ink karage, the burger and fries, and the bacon wrapped peppers. Oysters, skewers, spare ribs, and some rice thing were okay but wouldn't order again. Cocktails were good. However service was also slow and didn't show any hospitality. Felt like a fast food service vibe. Wasn't worth the price.

The Service has been Wonderful, but we didnt enjoyed the Yakitori - was a bit under seasoned for us and the spareribs - the meat was so tender was falling off the bone, We personally prefer a little more bite to our ribs.. to tell you honestly, the meal is completely overpriced!!

Another day that I ordered delivery on Uber eats due to the reason that I don’t feel to spend time in some non fine dining restaurants so eating at home is more cozy. I would say it was good. But I like being healthier instead of eating oily food even though I know this is barbecue. Overall I like it especially with ginger beer. But inside of me is feeling guilty to eat this to gain weight and fat.

We love Japan! Just spend 2weeks all over including the road less traveled-onsens in 4 prefecture! So when my son’s birthday dinner choice was here and it happened to be La dinning week so we chose the 8 course meals and I was totally disappointed.. 1) nice ambience 2) good service but we expected fine dinning ( although yakitori is a common street food) … 1) one small over cooked scallops… 2) miso soup was salty with few pieces of coin,,,, medley of mushroom was burned and dry, 3) honestly, still hungry …. Could have spend $10 in Tokyo and had a better meal…I was expecting fine dinning yakitori but it was mediocre…
