Philippe The Original is a solid stop. We took the family downtown LA on the train, and it is a short walk from LA Union Station. The Beef French Dip sandwich was good, and the fresh Frisco bread was amazing. I really liked the double meat pastrami sandwich, big enough to share. Coffee was really good and only 46 cents. Big lunch room, easy to find seats. Line moves fast. Classic place with old school vibe and fair prices for DTLA.
Philippe's, what can you say about a classic dipped beef sandwich? It's the atmosphere, the delicious sides, I really like the pickled beets, and I prefer the pork sandwich. Classic potato salad is always good, no matter what sandwich you order. Try the mustard with your sandwich, it's what other mustard want to be when they grow up. You can't go wrong with a good dipped sandwich.
Honestly , this was such a cute place. Old school and very simple. This is one of those regular spots to get inexpensive food. I actually just got the pb&j when I went but a few of my group got the dipper and they thought it was great. I’d recommend going here just for the old school vibes !
"Historic? You've gone to the right place!" My aunt told me over the phone. There was a line, and a lot of the crowd seemed like locals and the cashiers knew exactly what they wanted. Definitely wins in the atmosphere, and service was really nice. Plenty of seating and plenty of parking. I could smell the food upon entering. It was a pretty busy day, and the line moved steadily along, as those cashiers seemed to have everything down to a science. I got the classic beef dip, potato salad, and pickles. I was hungry. Right off the bat, I could tell from the smell of the restaurant that they bake the bread fresh. This was confirmed when I sank my teeth into this sandwich. Light, airy, and crispness that you should get from French bread. The meat - very tender, and juicy, and can taste the Au Jus sauce well. The potato salad was very nice, and the pickles were a nice touch. You can find plenty of seats. A lovely sandwich, and glad I drove through all that traffic for this delightful experience. If you're a sucker for historic restaurants like me, go here and get the original French Dip.
As a local, I recently visited Philippe The Original, and it’s every bit the iconic LA spot it’s known to be—the birthplace of the French dip sandwich with a story that started in 1918. The tale of Mathieu accidentally dropping a French roll into a pan of hot roast beef juices, only for the policeman to love it and come back with friends, is practically legend. That history alone makes eating here feel like a step back in time. I ordered the beef French dip sandwich, coleslaw, and cheesecake. The beef dip was, as expected, phenomenal. The soft, slightly crusty French roll soaked up the rich, savory juices just enough, and every bite was packed with tender, flavorful beef. The house mustard added a nice spicy kick that paired perfectly, and they nailed the “dip” level I asked for—not too soggy, just right. The coleslaw was crisp and refreshing, with fresh cabbage and a creamy dressing that balanced the heaviness of the sandwich. It was the ideal sidekick. The cheesecake? A total surprise. Silky, rich, and just sweet enough without being overwhelming, it was the perfect way to end the meal, especially with a hot cup of their classic coffee. Walking into Philippe’s is like stepping into a time capsule. The place hasn’t moved since 1951, still housed in that old machine shop with a hotel upstairs. The setup is unique—ten “carvers” behind a long counter, each handling their own line. My carver was quick, friendly, and made the whole process seamless, from taking my order to handing me my food right there. It’s efficient but still has that warm, family-owned vibe that makes you feel at home. The place was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, but the line moved fast, and checking out the menu board while waiting was half the fun. Philippe’s delivers on its promise of tradition—consistent food, great service, and an atmosphere that’s as authentic as it gets. It’s a must-visit in LA, and I’m already looking forward to my next trip to try the chili or maybe the pork dip. The beef French dip alone is worth coming back for!
Historical pit stop for people traveling through Union Station. Beef Sandwich Jack cheese Double dip on the side Add some spicy mustard when you sit down. 😘🤌🏼
The original Philippe in downtown Los Angeles. Great sandwich, authentic sandwich shop experience. Long line on Sunday noon when I went, but it moves fast and the service was excellent!!
This is not insignificant so let's start with the free parking directly across from the establishment... Yeah 👍 When I was there I observed 4 extremely courteous food specialist making sure your order was exactly what you came for. Another very significant observation, the table attendants were immediately present to clear the tables and keep patrons with available seating. Now the food. As I age, I've noticed myself gravitating towards high quality foods with balanced portions sizes. I absolutely love the portion sizes because I no longer need to feel incapacitated after a meal. I'd rather have quality prepared meals with considerate portions that leave me feeling kenetic as opposed to unavailable. I ordered the NY pastrami. It was superb. I like my pastrami well seasoned, tender and sliced just right. The flavor was perfect and and the the bread fresh. I had a long drive ahead of me and I left feeling extremely satisfied and energized. 10 out of 10 for me.
The Beef Dip was delicious✨ This place is really popular, so there was a long line to order Fortunately we were able to get a seat without waiting because they had plenty of seats I’m just wondering whether the Beef Dip normally comes with dipping sauce or, customers have to ask for it at the counter They didn’t give us the dipping sauce at first, but everyone around us had it So I asked for it at the counter and got it Did they forget to give me the sauce or was I supposed to ask for it when I ordered?😂
Phillipes is a staple in DTLA (adjacent). Down the street from Union Station. A place that is so consistent in service and food!! Lemonade is always under a $1! Lamb dip is perfection. Chili is delicious (either with or without beans). Potato Salad is so good. Pickles are a must!!
I used to live nearby in the late ’90s (yes, I know! Dating myself), and Philippe’s was a regular stop in my younger years. Somehow, despite over a decade of marriage, I only just managed to finally bring my better half here, and I couldn’t be happier that the place is still exactly the same. We came in late on a Tuesday evening after Christmas, and for the first time ever, there was no rush at all. It was almost surreal seeing this legendary spot so calm and empty. I had the double-dipped lamb, my husband went with the single-dipped pork; both absolutely delicious, just as I remembered. We lucked into one of those highly coveted booths (a rare prize during busy hours) and took our time enjoying the meal. Afterward, we wandered around, taking in the historical photos, artifacts, and memorabilia scattered throughout the building. What a treat to finally share such a beloved piece of Los Angeles history with the person I love. Philippe’s isn’t just a meal - it’s a time capsule, and I’m grateful it’s still standing exactly as it should.
The French dip is absolutely amazing. I got double meat which was well worth it. Drink selection was very diverse. The decor inside was also something to take note of. I got pudding for dessert and that was also a great treat. Parking can be difficult at times but they have 2 lots and street parking as well.
Saw it on a food review channel on YouTube and did not disappoint. Went during the Dodger's celebration Parade in Nov 2025. Pretty busy but lines went extremely fast. I enjoyed the quick turnover in regards to order vs receiving the meal. Staff were prompt, helpful and friendly. Well priced and great selection.
Went here on a Sunday morning. Parking was easy to find since the establishment has 2 parking spaces for patrons. The line was pretty long, but with the amount of workers at the register the line moved pretty quick. The menu is somewhat extensive, so being in line for a long time is a plus. I ordered a beef single-dipped sandwich with a side of au jus, pickled eggs, custard and their house lager. The cashier prepared everything for you and they give you a tray to take to a table. Everything was delicious. Personally, I'd have more meat on my sandwich, but now I know to ask for extra. The pickled egg was delightful along with the custard. The beer was delicious and refreshing. The house hot mustard is definitely something not to mess with. Enjoy in light portions, but I did take some home. Overall, a great experience! Historical, the atmosphere is a cafeteria environment, and the food was delicious. Definitely worth coming to the inventors of the French dip sandwich.
A wonderful old-school gem, a perfect example of high-quality simplicity and friendly service. The lamb dip with blue cheese was divine—and don’t forget the wasabi-esque mustard! The cole slaw, potato salad, and tapioca pudding were also the epitome of classic comfort food. I’ll be back!
This place reminds me of how Katz deli is set up in nyc. Stand in line to get your order at the counter and pay then find a table. Beef dip was excellent. I ended getting it “wet” which means both sides of the French roll get dunked. You can control of how much Au jus is added by asking for single dip (they dip one slice/side of the bread), double dip (dip both slides of one side of the bread), or wet which is dunking the bread. The beef French dip still comes with its side of dipping au jus. Pastrami dip was also delicious but it doesn’t come with its own sauce. The coleslaw was fresh and sweet and a good compliment to the sandwich. I could have done with a little more acid to give it some tang. I thought the mac and potato salad were too sweet and one note. Overall I’d get the beef dip again and consider trying some of their pickled items.
I've been going here since I was a little boy. My father went here when he was a little boy (WW2 vet). Whenever went here sammiches were a NICKLE! Times have changed but the food is just as good as the first time I went there. I consider it a treat to eat here and to me it's more then food but memories of happy times. Oh and dont forget to put the mustard on your sammich. Then buy a bottle/jar and take it home. Preferred gotta get menu, beef double dip. Dill pickle, cole slaw, glass of lemonade, cherry pie and cup of coffee. My personal fave and dont forget to try a pickled egg.
An L.A. institution and landmark. A must stop for anyone visiting L.A. Even the locals remain consistent customers. A delight to go with the favorites. Get the beef "wet" or double dipped with extra sauce. Make sure you try the mustard too. Pickled egg was a treat. Top tier for old school vibe. Gave me thoughts of L.A. in it's golden age.
Enjoyed the experience at one of the oldest eating establishments in Los Angeles today! The supposed birth place of the world famous French Dip sandwich. It has history, even still using sawdust on the floor! The food is of course absolutely delicious, they wouldn't stay in business this long otherwise. The prices have been one thing to change for sure, it's about $15 now for a sandwich, without any sides. They do have plenty of home made potato or macaroni salad and cole slaw available for around $4 each and a variety of drinks from sodas to juices to beers. Parking in the downtown area is usually hard to come by, but Philippe's has 2 parking lots available for customers - complimentary! Well worth the visit, no doubt at all 😉
For being an old restaurant, the quality and vibes all around were very impressive. Great value on the drinks and the sides, and although the sandwiches were a LITTLE bit pricey for the size, the taste made up for it. They had sports on the TV as well, and the ambiance felt very unique. Not many places like it for sure. Definitely would come back, but it may cost a penny or two.
I went late at night so there was not many people there. It was a good sandwhich but not best french dip i ever had. Thats only thin i oredered but i like the vibe and friendly staff. I could have used a bit more flavor on the beef but ill be back to try iut other items. Ole school diner feel and im sure it gets crowded during the day.
I'm in between, it was very flavorful, the location is old school, old style deli kinda place, it was slow when I came in, but it looks like a favorite place to some. Like I said I'm split because I enjoyed the sandwich, but I did not like the portions... Small BOLILLO( baguette),the lady serv8ng me said it was 4. Something of meat, but hell how do I messure that, I'm carrying a weight machine to check, the point is it was skimpy, by the way it was 17.50, TAX INCLUDED... defenetly not happy with the price... That dipping juice....mmmmmhhmmm was good though...
Pro Tip ⚠️: Try the beef with cheddar—but go easy on the signature mustard, it’s hot (in the best way). Also, free parking is a win! When I Visited: We stopped by Philippe’s before a Dodgers game, based on a solid rec from a stadium employee. Food/Drink Details 🥪: This place is a classic American diner—simple, tasty, and affordable. I had the French dipped beef with cheddar and it was on point. Ingredients were fresh, flavors hit just right. For dessert, the cheesecake was old-school and delicious. Service 🤝: Friendly and fast. Perfect for grabbing a bite before the game. Atmosphere/Decor 🍽️: Retro diner vibes with a timeless feel. There’s just one TV if you’re hoping to catch the game, but it did the job. Overall Experience ⭐: Philippe’s is a hidden gem just 10 minutes from Dodger Stadium, with two free parking lots and that no-frills, good-eats energy. Great spot for a pre-game bite or a casual meal with flavor and history.
This our first time at Philippe i didn’t know it was such a popular spot, the interior is very old school diner vibe with the phone booth n merch stand at the entrance. The floor was covered with sawdust ( i thought it was breadcrumb at first), not sure if thats the style of it or they haven’t sweep the floor lol. Service was quick despite the semi long line, counter ladies r nice and friendly, made the sandwiches very fast. Vibe is chill, feels like u are in those 90s movie scene at the diner. We got 2 things: 2 beef dips sandwiches n chicken noodle soup bowl. Total almost $40, kinda pricy for the value you get. However, the sandwiches are pretty damn good, beef v juicy n tender, flavor reminded me of the brisket in pho soup. Decent amount given per sandwich. Chicken noodle was pretty standard, taste like soup, delish but nothing special in term of flavor. Most likely coming back to try more things they offered. 8.5/10
