The food here is outstanding and for a very good value. The chips and guac come with a very large pile of guacamole. They have many types of salsas with varying spice that were delicious. The meat varieties for the tacos was something I have rarely seen before, including common options like carne asada, and rare options like tripa, lingua. Overall everything our group 8 was delicious, the service was fast, and the price was right. I definitely want to come back.
We were on a taco crawl and this was our 3rd stop. We were hitting our limit but still wanted to try this spot. We were a little embarrassed ordering 1 taco for 2 people but the kind cashier didn't make us feel bad at all! 🥲 He was SO sweet and treated us as if we ordered 100 tacos. He encouraged us to visit the salsa bar and take our time to enjoy our taco. I can't wait to revisit soon!
This was a spiritual experience. I moved to the East coast several years ago and there just aren’t taco places like this there. These were the best tacos I’ve had in years! The Al Pastor and the asada were phenomenal.
Great place for so cal tacos or burritos. I had a California burrito with carne asada, which was humongous and fully satisfying. The salsa bar has some good options as well.
Oh my god. The carnitas are straight bomb. Fire. They slap. Seriously though- this might be #1 carnitas. Al pastor way better than most. Guac on street tacos is fire. Soo good. Here’s the thing, tons of Mexican food down here, but history and tradition matters. Chuchys has been a downtown staple for ever. Back when he sat at the register at the restaurant under the bridge on the way to Coronado. It’s as real as it gets. Taste history-
Very good tacos. Had one Steak, one Chicken, and one Pork. My favorite was the chicken but the steak was a very close second.
First thing, the food is really good. The high rating truly reflects this establishment. Too many reviews hating on everything here but the food. This place is what it is, accept it or move on because this place is a lil gem!!! It reminds me of those lil spots for tacos in TJ. I've been here three times and it's been pretty consistent and usually lil wait time for ordering, I've never been here during lunch time. I've only had the tacos so far, tho I do wish they'd used two tortillas instead of one. A friend of mine ordered a burrito and said it was delicious, better than those overated places on the other street. Salsa bar salsa's are tasty and on the mild side, the sliced carrots were excellent, overall it's a nice salsa bar, gets the job done. I really enjoyed coming here, again it's very nostalgic for me. Service is always great, this place offers a taco Tuesday which tells me that they love their customers. Do yourself a favor, skip the long waits elsewhere and give this place a try, your patience and wallet will thank you. Enjoy
Absolutely delicious! Homemade tortillas were not too thick and not too thin, salsas and guacamole were delicious! The tacos are too die for the asada Is nice and Smoky and the lengua was perfectly cooked and tender. 100/10
They serve the best carne asada in San Diego County. We stumbled into them when they catered our friend's wedding. It was so good had to get their information. In the three years since the wedding, we've driven their all the way from La Mesa passing who knows how many Taquería to have the very best. We even used them for catering family dinners. If we're in the area we'll always pick up a meal, even if it's too go because it's absolutely delicious! The people are kind, helpful, and laugh at my husband's "dad jokes" allá! It's hard to get parking right in front/near, so plan to walk a block or two--but so very worth it. Red salsa is 🔥. ¡Pues si no pica, no tiene sabor!
I don’t want any of yall to go here because it would make me wait longer. If not equivalent, might be better than tacos el gordo. I’ll say it. The value, price, flavor, and type of quality you receive is all there. I have gotten tacos, fries, combos, burritos, here. All amazing. I think the two meats you use to compare taco shops is carne asada and al pastor. (I also like to throw in a cabeza and they also deliver here). Carne asada have a good Smokey and fatty background to the meat. The al pastor is similar in carne asada execution but sweet. I stop by here before every padre game. Highly recommend.
I ordered carne asada tacos and a mulita, and everything was excellent. The tacos were packed generously with meat, much larger than expected for the price. The mulita was flavorful, cheesy, and satisfying. The salsa bar was spotless, and each salsa had bold flavor with just the right amount of spice. The staff was friendly, service was quick, and the overall quality was far above what I anticipated for the cost. Great portions, fresh ingredients, and a welcoming atmosphere—highly recommend this spot to anyone craving authentic and delicious Mexican food.
Best tacos I've had to date. I've had good tacos in my town. Gone to tacos El Gordo as well in vegas. Plenty of good late night tacos trucks in the LA county. But these hit different. I highly recommend for anyone in town looking for well seasoned savory tacos. I had a quesitaco de birria, and regular asada and pastor taco. You can't go wrong with any!
Taqueria Los Chuchys was excellent food was sooo good I got a Californian burrito and three carne asada tacos all excellent definitely some of the best carne asada I've had and I've had alot they have a nice salsa bar service was great the only thing that sux and has nothing to do with the restaurant is parking it is Downtown These new price changes for parking downtown are incredibly expensive and so I paid for 2 hours and it cost me $16 I know I did not need 2 hours but I always just do max and I forgot about the price change
Been eating here for a few years (most recently 7/24). Pretty chill Mexican spot. The workers/cooks are always nice. Got the taco combo (Al pastor and carne asada). Everything per usual is fantastic and very flavourful They have a salsa bar in the back but I do want to note the salsas that were labelled as mild were kind of spicy and more like medium (but then again I'm more sensitive to capsaicin ) Also this place used to be one of the cheapest places to eat at but this year I was shocked. Nearly $18 for a two taco combo (it does come with chips, rice, refried beans, and a drink)
THE BEST CARNITAS TACOS IN TOWN + OPEN SALSA BAR! I was on my way to a different taqueria when I came across this one. Right off the back I enjoyed that it was not overwhelmingly busy, the location was clean, service was fast, and the best part of it all an open salsa bar! A problem that I come across taquerias/taco shops in San Diego is that they are very stingy with their salsa. So being able to find a taqueria with an open salsa bar is always a huge plus! All of the tacos we got were delicious but my favorite was the carnitas tacos. Absolutely one of the best carnitas tacos I’ve had in a really long time. I would definitely check this place out again and recommend it to everyone!
I got 2 quesabirria tacos that were really good, my husband got his carne asada tacos and the meat was sooo soft and delicious. Our daughter got carne asada tacos with onion and cilantro and was very satisfying. The agua frescos are so authentic my husband got a piece of the hibiscus in his mouth. The quesadillas weren’t the best so tacos del gordo has nothing to worry about. The area where you orde is a small area so if can get crowded quick.
Hole in the wall taco shop. Was recommended to me by friends and well worth the stop. Refried beans were a little bland but that was my only slight miss. Had the Carbe Asada Burro. Filling and damn tasty. This space is tiny, with rail seating as well as tables that can be moved around. 2nd visit: I swear the burrito weighs 2lbs. And the guacamole is enough for 4 people.
The tacos are so delicious! I can only imagine how good the rest of the menu is..So flavorful, I had a cabeza, carne asada and a birria queso taco.. I could’ve eaten another 3! Although all were very tasty my favorite was the cabeza! 😋 Friendly staff, very clean and organized establishment.
I wanted to try this Mexican spot out and got food around 3 pm on a Sunday. I ordered the Al Pastor Mulita (2 corn tortillas with cheese and Al Pastor). The food tasted solid, everything I expected. Not mind blowing though. The employee was really chill and attentive. The salsa bar was nice as well! Very spicy salsa!!
Okay, the tacos here aren’t the best I’ve ever had (I’ve been to Mexico, so I know what good tacos taste like). I got 2 tacos and 1 drink for around $14. The paper wrapping the taco is color-printed—does it meet food safety standards? The sauce from the taco causes the ink to smear. If you’re looking for high-quality tacos, try The Taco Stand—it’s about a 10-minute walk north. They are shooting a video at the restaurant today, so check it out on their IG
I got the pollo and carnitas tacos (3 tacos for $18). They were very mid tacos. Overstuffed with guacamole, fairly bland, and very oily. My stomach hurt immediately after. I don’t know why this place is 4.6 stars… I’ve found better tacos in the middle of VA on a dirt road, literally. The staff were super friendly/nice/efficient, but the place was tight to walk in and slightly awkward/uncomfortable to wait for your food. Sorry not sorry, just being honest.
Not worth the wait honestly. I came during lunch rush and waited 40 minutes for a few tacos. I had just had coffee prior so the time allowed me space to get hungry again. I had nowhere to be. I am not a taco lover but when I do crave some, I expect to be wowed. I think they are worth it for the unlimited salsa and toppings bar. The tacos are a generous size but they’re soggy and greasy. I hate eating tacos where it falls apart from all the liquids. It’s just lazy. The tortillas didn’t even taste warmed up. I tried the chicken, birria and lengua. I have had lengua before and it was super delicious. Laziness again, the lengua was cut chunky, only two pieces in the taco. It was bland and underwhelming. Chicken had way too much guacamole on it. Birria was also bland. I wouldn’t go out of my way for this but it’ll do on a slower day.
Came on a Sunday night after the Padres game, menu board hard to follow as it’s TVs flipping between their menu and the HULU Home Screen. When I finally ordered the bigger cashier girl doesn’t listen for anything had to repeat myself several times. And she still managed to get our order wrong. Two tacos and a burrito was nearly a 10 min wait with only one ahead of me. Trash was over flowing. Salsa bar was great, steak packed in a tiny taco, service just needs work
I will give them another chance, but this time around I wasn't satisfied. I had 3 tacos, cabeza, lengua, and tripa. The only one that i liked was tripa nicely crunchy. The tongue will not be getting again, head was good I was just disappointed with the giant piece or cartilage they put on my taco. My wife had carne asada and she liked it, the aguas frescas were good. I will try one more time the downtown taqueria another shot to see if they can change my review. I will try the national city taqueria as well and compare them. But as of now I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.
Terrible!! worst taco shop I’ve been in a long time. Not sure if they serve meat or what was all that cartilage in my “carne asada” quesadilla. Pastor tacos looked like painted meat and tasted really bad. Never going here again.
