Amazing local gem of a restaurant. Steak was done to perfection. The atmosphere is fine dining. The staff are great .
Following an authentically warm welcome from the host I was seated and took in my surroundings, which I’ll attempt to chronicle as eclectic upscale casual with scattered diner features. Ask me tomorrow and I’d likely describe it differently but the main thing was, it felt inviting and warm and cozy and worth the trip to the far side of Merrimon. - Service was flawless and effortlessly gracious; many thanks, Nicole. - The salad of charred beets and apples was a masterpiece of texture, taste and presentation. - The focaccia, from Asheville Proper, was decadently satisfying. Its dip tasted a bit off to me - perhaps too much sage? But hey, silly me, it’s described as a “sage dipping oil,” after all. - The accoutrements to the gnocchi were nice, but the dumplings themselves were unforgettable - pillowy morsels of otherworldly deliciousness with wonderfully crispy edges, oh my! - My apple tart was served with a “fall-spiced” ice cream that brought tears to my eyes - after a fall of unparalleled suffering and loss in Western North Carolina, its familiar, comforting flavors lifted my spirits with the promise of better autumns to come.
It feels like it’s time to review Little D’s. This is our fave neighborhood haunt. We have been several times. I’m always a little worried when I write a review that others will discover what a secret gem this place is, but I will write one nonetheless because Little Ds Deserves recognition. So what is to love? 1. The bartenders! We always sit at the bar. The bartenders are excellent, and I enjoy the vibe of the bar. It is lit perfectly and we can talk to the bartenders about our favorite potions and tonics and they are quick to make a beautiful drink. In the winter time, I enjoyed a wonderful winter daiquiri, and now that it is spring, there’s a daiquiri called “Torrents of Summer“ that is similar but also distinct from the winter version. So many other creative cocktails to enjoy. Including one recently that had Matcha in it. These are true mixologists! 2. The focaccia! This is unlike any focaccia we’ve ever had. Throw away all your notions of focaccia, except for the soft inside. This has a wonderful flavor and the softness of a traditional focaccia, but boasts a surprising crunch on the outside. This is the best focaccia I’ve ever had. And we make a lot of bread at home as well. That is high praise indeed. 3. We always order the shareable plates. The beef tartare is enough for a meal. Pair it with the focaccia, and you actually have some bread to take home. Other favorite shareable plates include seasonal gnocchi and beets; there is also usually some sort of shrimp or scallop offering. At one point, they had a foam that was on the scallops that was amazing. The menu changes seasonally, and there’s always something new to try. 4. The portions are usually generous. Something like a shareable scallop dish would certainly have fewer scallops than a main course, but again, paired with the focaccia or a salad, and you have a full meal. 5. They have gender neutral bathrooms! Yay. As someone who works a great deal with the trans and non-binary community, you have no idea how important this is. Thank you!
We live here. We eat at a new place every weekend. This is THE BEST food and drink we have found. A must!!!! The kitchen is a master artist of flavors. Wow! Thank you and see you soon!
I’ll be honest, Little D’s was not on my top 5 list of places I haven’t tried yet in Asheville that I wanted to try. It’s in a nondescript shopping center with a grocery store, a nail salon, and a pet store, and had never caught my attention. A friend ate there and liked it, and suggested it one night when we were going out to dinner. I’m glad he did. We tried it … and we liked it so much that we went back again a week later. Little D’s is not very large. There are several tables and a few seats at the bar. The service is excellent … friendly, helpful, and attentive. The menu is fairly small with maybe 12 to 15 appetizers/shareables and 5 or 6 main courses plus a couple of daily specials. I’d never had an old fashioned … not sure why because I’m a bourbon guy. Bartender Andrew made me one and now I’m an old fashioned guy. We started with the roasted butternut squash focaccia and fried oysters, and both were delicious. For main courses, my wife and I both ordered the stuffed butternut squash (see photo). It’s a butternut squash cut in half and stuffed with kale, white beans, onions, walnuts, goat cheese, and a fig balsamic topping. My wife is pescatarian (or is it presbyterian?), so it was a logical pick for her. I’m not pescatarian, but I saw it delivered to another table and it looked really good, so I decided to try it too. How good was it, you ask? So good that when we went back a week later we ordered it again. Friends that were with us ordered the lamb special and the mahi mahi, and they both gave their entrees a thumbs up as well. In my view, the food is outstanding. If you’re looking for a place to eat in North Asheville, you should definitely consider Little D’s … who knows, we might see you there.
Was very yummy! Nicole was amazing!
Awesome new restaurant in north Asheville. The tuna crudo and mustard crusted grouper were both excellent. Jay, the bartender, was a breath of fresh air and we will definitely be frequenting this spot.
I took my parents and grandparents here for dinner. We all agreed it was one of the best meals we have ever had. We had the winter menu featuring mushroom ragout, pork tenderloin, beef tartare, and focaccia. Can’t wait to come back for spring shareables.
What a sweet little restaurant!! One of the best duck dishes I've tried...I can't stop raving about it. The flavors/ingredients are unique and seasonal. I liked the option to do several small plates if you want to mix it up. We tried the octopus, which was well-prepared and came with some yummy sauces, the kale salad with peaches, the dry aged duck, and the summer squash caponata. All 4 were really good. Oh and I was super impressed that they had 2 GF desserts on the menu that weren't just the basic flourless torte. The chai semifreddo was unique and so delicious!!
Absolutely delicious! The flavors of each dish were creative, perfectly paired and so tasty! You can definitely feel the intentionality of menu. The service was incredibly friendly and upbeat as well! Great energy and great food.
The food was incredible. I had a steak with the most amazing homemade steak sauce. I even bought a bottle of it. I could drink the stuff. I dine out in Asheville a ton and rarely does a meal feel as mind-blowing as this one was. Even the kale salad had a flavor profile that I loved. And I'm not a huge fan of kale. Sat at the bar and the service was stellar. Modifications were made for me...gluten and dairy free... without an issue. I appreciate feeling like I can eat amazing food even with a more strict diet. Thank you! We will be back often!
The best apple tart I’ve ever had, despite living in 2 different cities in Europe known for their amazing pastries. 100% solid Manhattan cocktail, and I’m really picky about them. The cauliflower soup special was so good that my parents tasted mine and ordered their own. Other amazing things: the beets and chèvre, the steak, the shrimp pasta, the lemon cornmeal cake. Oh and the server Jay was just fantastic. I’ve lived in Asheville for 22 years (and worked in food service for over a decade of them) and I generally don’t try restaurants until they’ve made it for a year or so…the Asheville food scene can be pretty Darwinian…but my family really wanted to try this place and I’m stoked that we did. We will definitely be back.
Absolutely incredible. We live close to this place and finally tried it and we were blown away! The flavors and textures were spot on. Great cocktails. Lovely vibe. So grateful to have a restaurant of this quality in our neighborhood.
Fabulous food and service. Top notch cocktails. 10/10
We had never considered Little Ds even though we live near by. A friend took us last night, it is now our go to. We all had the rib eye, cooked as requested, Abigail our server, took excellent care of us without hovering. We were not pressured to leave , great since it was a reunion of sorts. The decor is lovely. Who is the decorator? I am over the moon with this place.
I asked about a tasting menu and even though they were working out the kinks they made it happen for us, which felt special. The server was helpful but we were left without silverware a few times, nothing that impacted our experience. Food coming out of the kitchen was delicious, executed well and with precision timing. Food was very fresh and seasonal, seasoned well, and every time we finished a course the next one dropped, would highly recommend anyone in Asheville give them a shot.
We went on a Sunday, and the restaurant was not that busy. I had the charred carrots, focaccia, and gnocchi. The sauce on the gnocchi was delicious! The focaccia came in handy in scraping every bit of the sauce. :) The wine selection had a mix of old world and new world wines. We wished there were more French wine options though. We'll come back, and definitely recommend Little D's to a friend.
Great place. Meal was perfect and very flavorful!
First time for us. Previous reservation was woped out by Helene. Everything was wonderful...especially the grouper soup. It was OUTSTANDING. Will be back, cannot recommend enough.
I had the chargrilled sirloin cap steak. It was very delicious food. I also had some of the focaccia. It was very nice food for me. Nicole was our server. She did a good job.
Great place. Had Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Brussel sprout leaves and chili crisps. It was wonderful. Followed by Dry Aged Duck Breast with pickled fennel, butternut squash and fried Brussel sprouts. Also aoli and a duck jus. This was excellent. Duck breast is not at all like chicken breast, which I find dry. This was juicy and tender. A really nice experience. And Rachael made it even nicer. Would really recommend.
We were the very first takeout diners and were pleasantly surprised and most impressed with the preparation, quality and variety of flavors perfectly paired. Fantastic to have such a fresh high quality restaurant added to north Asheville. Congratulations to all the management and staff for a job well done.
Always excellent service, outstanding atmosphere and perfect food.
I've hesitated to leave this review for a long time. Selfishly I want to be able to eat here whenever I want. This place deserves a week long waitlist. Food is always impeccably crafted. Flavors and freshness are superb. Service : Immaculate. 10 outta 10.
Had a great Easter dinner here - there were three in our group and we got the ny strip, scallops, and mahi and split some roasted beets. Everything was well prepared and tasty and the service was great. Excellent addition to north Asheville!
A quiet gem with delicious creative preparations. We had the snapper and mahi mahi. Our waitress was so helpful and overall it was a lovely evening. They were able to accommodate my gluten, peanut and sesame allergies.
This place is a gem. Left the Omni to dine here and were thrilled with the food. So glad we went!
Had an excellent impromptu anniversary dinner from start to finish. Delightful dishes. relaxed atmosphere, great service. We will definitely be back!
We celebrated a birthday dinner here with friends. We shared several shareable plates and the grilled red beets were the best out of the three. Then we had main dishes. The steak was absolutely delicious and the pork chop is amazing! You definitely will not be disappointed. We will be back for more celebrations!
Saturday around 6pm there should've been a line out the door for this place, and I am manifesting that it will. We got to sit at the bar and Andrew took care of us, as sober people it was nice to see a mocktail section. We ordered the focaccia, meatballs and gnocchi and the cinnamon cheesecake. I should've, and maybe would've given a more private seating lick every one of those plates tonight. The cinnamon meringue was my favorite component tonight. I am a cinnamon girl, and that was delightful. It was also nice that the chef de cuisine (Chef Sam) also brought out the cheesecake. He was another delight that came with it. Sweet potato gnocchi was my next favorite. All the textures and flavors complimented each other so well. I could eat that every night
10 out of 10!! This place is absolutely phenomenal! The drinks are perfectly curated and the food! Oh my goodness, the food! This was legitimately one of the best meals we have eaten! The flavors, the thought, the execution, all were incredible!!!! Will definitely be recommending this place to everyone we know.
My girlfriend and I went here for her birthday and we were not disappointed! Jay was our server and I cannot say enough good things about him. He made the experience special but not uppity which was perfect for us! Cocktails were amazing and food was to die for. Thanks Jay!!
Place is legit, every single plate was a 9/10. Jay and crew were fantastic. seasonal southern/globally inspired shareable plates yuuuppp
Very good food and wine. Went after spending a day at the NC arboretum and enjoyed the whole experience!
I have passed by this restaurant many times. It is so much nicer on the inside! The atmosphere is beautiful, high end, and comfortable. Food was delicious, complex, and artful. Drinks were similarly creative and high quality. I am excited to go back and try the menu in a different season! The staff was very kind and accommodating of my food allergies, as well. This is truly a hidden gem.
Little D's has become our favorite local spot. The food never disappoints. As a family of vegetarians, we always have several delicious options to choose from. The chef continually updates the menu based on seasonal and local ingredients, ensuring there's always something fresh and exciting. Yet, some tried-and-true items remain consistently available, often with slight adjustments that elevate them based on the season and weekly ingredients. The quality of the food is evident, and the way the chefs celebrate single ingredients, like peaches or zucchini, showcases their talent and passion. The staff strikes the perfect balance between being friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The intimate and well-decorated space creates a wonderful atmosphere. Would absolutely recommend Little D's!
Great find!!! We live in Mills River and were recommended to try Little Ds out. We are foodies and love to sit at the bar. The staff was inviting and made suggestions for us newbies. From the foccacia, to the cauliflower and the tartare, all was delicious. Then the steak and grouper were spot on. We had the creme brulee for dessert. Amazing! We will be back.
Little D's is truly a gem in the culinary scene. Every visit is a delightful experience for the senses. The menu is a treasure trove of flavors, where each dish is thoughtfully crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their attention to detail and passion for food shines through in every bite. From the first appetizer to the final dessert, each dish showcases the chef's creativity and expertise. One cannot help but be impressed by the diverse range of options available, catering to various tastes and dietary preferences. Whether you are a meat lover, a seafood enthusiast, or a vegetarian, there is something for everyone at Little D's. The flavors are bold, the presentation is exquisite, and the portions are generous. The service at Little D's is equally exceptional. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure a memorable dining experience. The warm and inviting ambiance of the restaurant adds to the overall charm, making it a perfect setting for any occasion. Overall, Little D's is a culinary haven that never fails to impress. It is a place where food is not just a meal but an experience to be savored and remembered. For those seeking a remarkable dining adventure, Little D's is undoubtedly a must-visit destination.
WOW. We are blown away. We had dinner for two last night. Every bite was better than the last. The gnocchi was so good we ordered a second plate. Service and ambience was delightful. We are so excited to come back. You will see us soon! Also, something to consider, maybe add a "Tip the kitchen" item on the menu. They can have all my money!
A party of two. We were quickly seated at the bar even though we lacked reservations. The food was fantastic as were the two mixed drinks we had. The bartender was very friendly and able to go over the menu in great detail and help us pick a drink based on our predilections. The duck breast was cooked to absolute perfection, well enough to get a sear, rare enough to be juicy. Good location, friendly staff. Would Absolutely come back here again.
We have waited a long time to try Little D though it’s in our neighborhood and we shop at Fresh Market several times a week. Till we came across Little D at Heritage Fire last year and had a chance to experience its food, we knew little about the place. It is a nice and unique little place in the hood with creative food and charming decor. Place is small so reservations highly recommended. It was a busy night and diners look sophisticated. Our server was friendly though a tad over the top and not so authentic for a sophisticated place. It was super noisy and our aged neighbors had a hard time hearing. Food was beautifully and creatively presented. Shareable were small portions and fairly pricey if a group were to order many to share. Food was good but not a wow and totally over salted We had requested low salt due to a dietary need for our aged neighbors and our food came loaded with salt! I hope Little D chefs pay attention to this as I saw that others have mentioned this too in their reviews. We are sitting on the fence on Little D at the moment. We feel it deserves another visit. We are not getting a clear idea its positioning yet and we hope it finds its groove. It can really be a nice go to place for a nice dinner in the neighborhood.
The service, wine recommendation, and atmosphere was wonderful. I tipped the server twice. 3 out of 4 in our party were very pleased with their food. I thought my wife's pork chop was more med well than med. My duck with pasta was overly salty and the grilled broccoli seemed overcooked but that could be my pallet. With more experience, I could could make better choices. Still 4+ rating.
The cocktails were excellent. The panzenella salad was excellent. The duck was very good. The carmel cinnamon cheesecake was excellent.
Atmosphere was great! Server was wonderful. Food was just OK. The fish was super salty and the sweet potato gnocchi didn’t have much flavor. The chocolate bombé dessert was average with the coffee cake tasting a bit bland. Would go back for just a cocktail!
Tried several dishes with a group. The group was a fan of the scallops, thought gnocci and focaccia were ok, not so much the hasselback potato or glazed Brussel sprouts. Squash, pork loin, and steak got better reviews. Not at a price point were they can afford to have OK food.
It was fine but hard to recommend at the price point for fine dining. The presentation was creative but octopus and steak were overcooked and bland. Quality of ingredients did not stand out. The swordfish was small and overly salty. Again the food was ok and service nice enough, but for the price point you want to expect top-notch.
It’s nice to have a new restaurant on Merrimon but this one is bit pricey for what you get. Also, the menu was very limited. My husband liked the lamb but the my mahi mahi dish was small and not very good. I was also unimpressed with my wine pour. I will try it again because the atmosphere is clean and fresh and the service was good.
Not bad not good. The food was overall “fine.” We had shishitos & cauliflower shareables. Decent. Not very flavorful, though and the teres filet entree was not warm or very tasty.
I waited a bit to give a review. I really do not enjoy giving a bad one, but this needed to be done. Went there for the first time this past December. We had a group of six, also first timers. It was very cold and windy and they sat us to the left, just inside the door. They had rigged some kind of fabric screen to block the wind when someone opened the door, but that didn't work. We all had to keep heavy coats on throughout the meal. As far as "food" the only thing memorable was the steak tartare. It was very good. I shared the T-bone special with someone. If I recall, it was at least $60, but I love a good steak. This wasn't one. It was thin and way over done. We did all enjoy the fried brussel sprouts appetizer. Quite frankly, I'm over that trend. That tends to happen in Asheville. Just a couple of years ago it was "fried okra". Something new and creative would be a welcome change to the appetizer menu. OH, and the service sucked! That's as honest as I can be. Nothing good happened here on 12-20-2024;-)
In a strip mall, atmosphere was poor, tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the food (especially the mahi mahi) was almost inedible with how much salt they used. Vegetables were over charred and lacked flavor. It was so bad, we left to go somewhere else for dinner midway through. In hindsight, we should have sent the food back.
