Another win for the food for all app! I consider myself very lucky to be able to pick up a delicious, nutritious ample bowl of spicy pork, cabbage and rice for a fraction of the cost via the food for all app. The portions are really generous and the spicy is indeed spicy. I am here at off hours of 8 PM, even though this place is conveniently open 24 hours. It’s like I have the place to myself and the s bowl is just one of the selections available at a discounted price. Thank you so much for joining the app, and for being part of not just the slow food movement but the stop-food-waste movement.
Found this place using the food for all app. I was surprised to how big the place is and the variety of food! Was definitely a great experience and soooo worth it with the app
Good selection of different types of food. I had korean beef over rice which was tasty but lukewarm
I'm not going back but it was an experience. The sheer amount of food present should have lit a red flag in my head as to the quality, but I went in anyways and loaded up on an over priced pound of food. It's just your standard Chinese buffet with a Wall Street cover. The only difference is Chinese buffets usually don't cost this much. They must fill their trash every night with so many pounds of food, it's almost depressing.
I would recommend EVERYONE check your statements and keep receipts. My wife was the first to notice that the totals charged at the point of sale is not what is charged to the bank account. Saw it first hand today, and upon questioning I was shown a tiny notice (behind display items) stating there's a 3.5% service charge for debit/cards. Got it, not unusual and understandable, however how does a charge of $10.91 at point of sale come up to $12.33 charged to our account? Not sure what math they're using, unfortunately didn't take my receipt but still trying to figure out how 3.5% of that total charge leads to $12.33? That's more like 13%, but without a receipt I can't tell what else may have been tacked on. In the end its Not the amount- it's the principle: clearly and boldly notify customers of all fees, so they can choose to pay cash or buy elsewhere. Something isnt mathing, but I'm going to find out and warn my co-workers who frequent this establishment often. Funny thing is we've been coming here long before it was even called Essen, but haven't paid mind to the fees till recently- Please do what we haven't! (But definitely will be moving forward) Check your accounts!
Well the food was good, but I had a tuna salad sandwich on rye with a pickle spear. The sandwich was really excellent. But when I looked at the buffet it looked pretty tired and there was no way I was going to eat from that. They let the food sit out too long. But my big complaint is the attitude there. A lot of Latino men with a lot of attitude. They look at you like they don't want to help. You ask a question, and they don't speak any English. But then to be rude and sneer at your customers? These people are not cut out for public work. I asked him what time do they close and they said we never closed but if you look at the hours they closed. I almost didn't make it. And of course yes it's expensive, a sandwich and a Coke and a few pieces of chocolate cost me $18.50, and there was no receipt given. But I would go back for just for the sandwich.
Food is hit or miss at the buffet and the prices (by weight) are very high. Best bet is to go for their sandwiches/subs/wraps or the hibachi/noodles. The price is set there and is reasonable for the area and the food is pretty good there. DO NOT buy drinks here. It is a total ripoff and they do not provide a receipts showing how much they charged for what. I was charged $14 for 2 bottles of iced tea and a bottle of water!
We were tempted by their "healthy slow food" description but I was not impressed. The choice is good. Though no description of what you are choosing from a buffet so probably not the best for a fussy eater. Some dishes were nice, some were average. But the place is very pricey, especially, that there is nowhere to sit so you end up with a take away (there were a few tables on site only. Despite it being not busy at all, no one seemed to be interested in cleaning them). Maybe I would give it more stars if it wasn't so expensive for what you get..
The food is good, but it's PROFOUNDLY overpriced. We went in twice, and both times my wife noticed the cashier weighed our bottled water along with the food. My wife was too nice to tell me, because I would have told the cashier to eat the food herself. We ate at a similarly styled restaurant in Herald Square for 1/2 the price. By my estimation, each bottled water added $15.59 to the bill. The place is a scam. Stay away! There are tons of better places in walking distance. Expect this place to go away in the near future.
Guy cooking my sandwich was rude, impatient, and totally unhelpful. Grilled chicken sandwich was lackluster.
Guy tried to charge me $46 for 2 6-packs of Modelo. I asked where the prices were and he said I was supposed to haggle for it. After I said it was too high, he took the beers and hid them behind the counter. Not only is that a rip-off but also illegal to not post prices.
The prices at Essen are ridiculous and not worth it at all for the quality of the food here. I paid 8 dollars for entirely overcooked soup. This is supposed to be CHICKEN NOODLE. Where the noodles at? Oh thats right you cooked the soup for so long that the noodles broke into tiny soggy fragments. You also cooked the soup for so long that the chicken is extremely tough and hard to bite through. It’s actually pretty nasty and unpleasant, I won’t be able to finish even half of this. Someone here needs to revisit their cooking skills. You’re making food for people not for animals, remember that. Cook it with a little love geez.
Veggies are not washed... I got bok Choi for lunch and as soon as I put it in my mouth, I felt sand... well I looked in to it carefully and found it was full of sand at the root... I don’t think they wash the vigies at all. Disgusting :( String beans were all super chewy and couldn’t even eat them.
