The best Indian restaurant we know in New England. And persistently keeping high standard for 40 years ( yes. We were there that long ago). An amazing service, good food, nice portions. And unbeatable location! We love it.

Both the Maharaja Biryani and Chicken Chettinad we ordered were delicious. The staff was very attentive which was a plus. The food is fairly expensive at 25-30 dollars a plate but it was a worthwhile experience.

Sooo good! Will be back, everyone was so nice and the food was delicious. Felt like a fine dining experience and we got to sit by the window and look out into Harvard Square. So fun!

The Maharaja combines excellent Indian food with great service and a nice atmosphere. It has a great selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. The place is a bit expensive being 20-30 dollars per person.

Came here for an early dinner, and wasn’t expecting much but some pretty good food. Well I was blown away by not just their food, but their service too. Upon entering I warmly greeted and shown to a table near the window, which overlooked the street view of Harvard Square. Because it was early, there weren’t many patrons dining, but you could tell they packed a crowd later in the evening. It was plenty of space and the table setting were neatly placed. I ordered a lychee martini and it was soooo good. Usually I have to ask for extra lychee, but they put 3 in my drink from the start. It was very tasty. They charge an extra $3 for top shelf vodka. For my meal, I ordered the chicken samosa, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan bread, and a dessert called gajar halwa. They give you two chicken samosas, which are packed with chicken. And no need to over-order this dish, because the pieces are very big. You could probably spilt this between 3 people easily. The chicken masala was amazing. The chicken was marinated heavily, and so tender. It was just really good. As for the garlic naan it was a nice portion, and tasted even better after dipping it in the sauce from the chicken tikka masala. I wasn’t a fan of the gajar halwa, but I’m sure someone else would love it. It was too much carrot for me. I only gave the atmosphere a low rating, because it was hard to find the entrance & there’s construction going on outside.

Elegant place to have official or family dinners. Vegetarian food was good but as a spicy food lover it was little bland even after taking their spicy option, it wasn’t spicy enough for me. I loved the daal makhni, it was so yum. Quantity was more than enough for chicken biryani.

Excellent food. It was really tasty and the quantity was good too, we took home leftovers. The service was great, it felt like they really did care about us having a good meal. The view is great since the restaurant is on the 2nd floor and it's entirely surrounded by glass. If you want vegetarian food, they have lots of options. Highly recommend this place!

My fave spot in all Harvard Square! Went there with a group of 7 for a larger dinner. Ordered a ton of different options, including vegetarian ones (they have a large selection of veggie dishes!). Food: They serve papadams first and they were really good, slightly spicy and served with some great, homemade sauces. Next came the veggie samosas - really good and surprisingly spicy. The mains - I was able to try three differen ones: Baingan Bharta was really good (if slightly fatty - but let's face it - best Indian food usually is!) and fulfilling Chicken Chettinad was a really spicy and flavorful dish, highly recommended (Medium Spicy was not very spicy at all, but on the other hand Spicy option was really a lot for some of our crew!) My fave was the Goa Fish Curry - wonderfully creamy and rich taste - definitely recommended! We also tried a bunch of Mango Lassis and would definitely recommend the one with mint and ginger - wonderfully sweet and refreshing! Service: They sare all nice and quite fast, but I have to note that the restaurant was not very busy, only like 1/3 full and we waited more than 30 minutes on our mains... Not the best, but could be much worse I guess :) Ambiance: It's nothing special and feels slightly dated as a spot, but I lreally liked the floor-to-ceiling windows, which make for a nice addition if you can get a window seat.

A homey perch above Harvard‘s shopping street for delicious Indian food that will make you feel like you’re at a family table. Have been to the Maharaja multiple times over the years and it’s the atmosphere, service, and high quality food that makes it a spot I should visit more often! Today we ordered the chicken tikka from the tandoor section for the first time, and it arrived on a sizzling platter with vegetables and a lemon wedge: absolutely delicious. The paneer dish was fantastic too, as were the vegetable samosas and complementary papadums. My only point of feedback would be to reduce the salt level a touch and the sugar level in the mango lassi, but personally I cook very sparingly with these so I am probably more sensitive. The atmosphere and service is what really stands out here. On this evening, our server came by three times to ask whether we were enjoying our food, and the background music was violin renditions of Coldplay songs i.e. very relaxing! One thing I will say is that the flavors do seem adapted to fit a broad set of palates. Authenticity isn’t really one of my yardsticks to evaluate restaurants. My palate is informed not by home cooking but by the excellent Indian food I had living in Asia. Could the flavors be a bit punchier and complex? Sure. Is it the best samosa I’ve ever had? No, but that’s a bit beside the point. You can tell the food is prepared with care and love, and all that together with the warm service when dining in makes a visit here like a warm hug. Absolutely recommended for small and large gatherings!

You have to visit this Indian restaurant, by far best Indian food I have had in the US. Be careful with asking for spicy food, the chef is tuned to adjust spice level as per Indian pallet. Great food, polite staff, we had Punjabi Kadi, Bartan bhartha and mango moose. Definitely recommend.

Delicious combination of spices that'll make your taste buds happier and happier with each bite! Definitely a must if you're ever around and feel like having an authentic experience. From mood lighting to the Naan, it's meant to be experienced with loved ones or if you're on a date. Enjoy!

We ordered the chicken tikka masala, top menu from the lamb section, garlic nann, sweet lassi and diet coke. The sweet lassi wasn't very sweet, which is like minus 0.3 stars as I was really craving lassi. I guess it can't be the same as the ones I had in Mumbai. Besides the lassi, everything was very good, including the service and the atmosphere. I ordered spicy chicken tikka masala, which wasn't spicy for me so I'd definitely get spicy ones again next time. The lamb was really good as well. The rice that came with each dish was enough to make us quite full. The atmosphere and the service definitely deserves a 5 star! Highly recommend.

Absolutely the best Indian food in Boston. The flavor is authentic and delicious in every way. The prices are pretty good, the atmosphere is great, and the staff are very friendly. Definitely good to go with friends or even by yourself for any hankering for Indian cuisine. 10/10 would recommend!

This was an excellent buffet, with many options. I found everything to be delicious. I also enjoyed the lemon drop cosmopolitan. The place was a little hard to find. The GPS said I had arrived, but I didn’t see it anywhere. Turns out this restaurant is on the top floor of a larger size building. But that also gives it a nice view if your seated at the window. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very nice and attentive.

We went after the Harvard-Yale game, Fatima our waitress guided us through the menu and gave us an amazing recommendation. The food was delusions, the ambiance, and the atmosphere was perfect! Highly recommend

One of the best Indian restaurants I have ever been to not just in Cambridge but anywhere. Everything, vegetarian and meat dishes, was delicious. Mild versions were not spicy at all, while hot versions had just the right amount of spice in them. The staff was extremely kind and friendly, providing recommendations and taking into account small changes to the dishes that we ordered. Great atmosphere and location, right next to Harvard Square. We ordered too much and took it with us to enjoy the next day. I will soon be back!

Excellent experience every time we go here. This time we ordered lamb biryani, an extra raita, and a mango lassi. Oh and before they bring the entree, they serve a cumin bread with three sauces which are really tasty. The food smells good, tastes good, and just makes you feel good. The yogurt complements this dish delightfully. We had it yesterday, and I already miss it! The service is wonderful and everyone is so friendly and nice.

Wow what a delightful experience. Everything we ordered was exceptional. We tried sham savera(never seen on menu anywhere else in Indian restaurant) - taste was just perfect. We also tried dal, naan, and jeera rice and no disappointment. Ambiance was great too. Undoubtedly one of best Indian restaurant i have come across till now in US.

I just had an amazing dinner! Their food is a little pricey (on Uber eats), but it is worth every penny! I took a bold decision of ordering the Nargisi Malai Kofta. I say bold because every other Indian restaurant I have tried makes it very sweet and somehow it is dried up cream or something with only sweet taste. But!!! This restaurant just nailed it, it was perfectly creamy yet I could taste all the spices and the koftas were tasty too. In addition I ordered paneer kulcha and samosas. Paneer kulchas were fully filled with paneer and not sparse and crispy as I like them. They also gave three different kind of chutneys to go with the samosas and the paneer kulcha and complimentary rice. The quality and quantity of the food was perfect overall. Will definitely order food from here again! Update: ordered Navaratna Korma this time, it is the best dish from this restaurant so far!

My group and I stumbled into The Maharaja on a beautiful afternoon. We were immediately greeted and sat down. We then met Edwin. Let me say this, Edwin is one of the best waiters we have ever had in our lives. Best energy. Best service. He also was the bartender at the time, making us genuinely the most refreshing drinks. What an incredible experience. Thank you Edwin and thank you The Maharaja. 10/10 experience, we’ll be back 100%.

We went for early dinner on a Sunday without a reservation and scored a table by the window with a beautiful view of Winthrop Square. Our server was prompt, friendly and gave us excellent menu suggestions. The mango lassi was delicious, and the papadum flatbread for the table with sauces was perfect. We ordered four different chicken entrees and each were incredible. Even the veggies in the tandoori chicken were sautéed and seasoned perfectly. Portions were generous, and the bread basket was more than enough for our party of four! Overall a fantastic meal, great service and a great location. Highly recommend and will be back!

If you love authentic Indian Food. You have to try this place. Nice air, all professional. Welcoming environment. Bright open street view through windows is definitely a plus.

The naan was very buttery and delicious, the shahi paneer went perfectly with it. Great location with a lively atmosphere and is close to MIT and Harvard. Will be back soon!

This place is impressive! In a city full of bad culinary (and other) options, this is one of the precious few good choices one can make. Genuine Indian fine dining done well. We ordered a few items that historically have been a bad experience for me in other places and Maharaja delivers flawlessly. The galauti, seekh and a saag curry … all three hit the bullseye on quality, taste and portion size. There was a distinction in the flavors and consistency of the galauti and seekh … not just rolled in different shapes but actually made to be different. The chicken in the saag was tender and the gravy was perfectly seasoned. I also loved the paneer Bhatura … I was not sure what to expect but then it arrived, it was exactly what I imagined. Again, flawless. No excess oil, just the right amount of paneer, coated on the inside of a fluffy poori which was holding its shape … well done! Decor was very authentic … this is what I’d expect at a five star hotel restaurant in India. Nice street view, finished ceiling, wooden art panel, white table cloth (no paper) and quality silverware were all nice touches. This place deserves the full five stars in all 3 categories. Compared to what passes for food in Boston, this place deserves more.

Delicious food, although pricey. Everything tastes authentic, the spices and flavours they use here reminds me of home. I order the shrimp biriyani and fish pakora through UberEats once a month. The portions are good too. When you ask for spicy/hot, it is truly very spicy, on a south Asian scale (coming from a Bangladeshi). This is the only Indian restaurant I like in Boston and I’ve tried all of them- even among the most popular spots, this place is truly underrated!

Food was excellent. Service was even better. Nice views from the second floor location. Goat curry and butter chapati were awesome. My wife enjoyed her chicken biryani. Will definitely go back.

We went for lunch. Food was delicious, slightly more expensive than we expected but most things are now. Generous portions so matches the price. Will definitely go again when in the area.

Amazing Indian food and super nice service! The atmosphere was crowded and yet surprisingly homely. It seems like an upscale place but prices aren't even that bad. Goes to show that other Indian places overcharge you for bad service. Maharaja on the other hand was totally worth the cost!

Very good food, bit on pricier side but perhaps reasonable for location rght at Harvard Square . We were a large group of 9 people so tried lots of dishes. Tandoori Chicken and naans were totally fresh, which means 20-25 minutes after ordering but very tasty. Lamb kakabs were good as well. Vegetable servings were reasonable sized. Baigan bharta very well prepared and authentic. Bhindi pyaza was the only rather poorly prepared dish, there were very few pieces of minutely cut bhindi and large chunks of onion filled the whole serving - really just a serving of chunks of onion - we did not complain to avoid a scene because rest of food was good and complaining would ruin a nice overall experience for our group, but it really should have been sent back. They added 18 pct gratuity automatically, so bill was $309 with gratuity for 9 people (only water, no drinks alcoholic or otherwise), so not cheap, but quite satisfying. Will go again for quality of their tandoori offerings.

The Restaurant is a great spot for flavorful Indian food. The dishes are rich, aromatic, and clearly made with care. The curries are well-spiced, the naan is fresh and soft, and the portions are generous. The menu offers a nice variety, with plenty of options for both vegetarian and non vegetarians. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the service is prompt, making the overall experience very enjoyable. If you’re looking for delicious Indian cuisine in the Boston Square area, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit with a nice view.

Every dish in this restaurant was good (nothing bad or amazing), just good. Wouldn’t mind going here for again if there’s not much around open.

Food is ok, ambience is excellent 👍.We ordered galauti kebab which though succulent could be more authentic. Good assortment of drinks and the servers are very personable. We tried the Dhaba chicken with garlic naan which was good. Overall this is a reasonable place to taste Indian cuisine.

Dariusz Jemielniak (Pundit)

It used to be a casual place with great lunch specials and an all-you-can-eat buffet. Now they don't offer that anymore but the food is good, even if a bit pricey (~25$ per dish naan is extra). The food tastes fresh, although naans seem to be pan reheated. "Medium spicy" means "mild" :)

Came here as a big group for my friend’s birthday. Before the visit, I had a few takeouts from this place, and i wasn’t particularly impressed with their tikka masala and the saag paneer. The chicken samosas were good, but the tikka masala was a little too sweet. For the visit, I got the mango lassi cocktail and the maharaja biryani. The Maharaja biryani came out in a traditional steel bowl and in huge portions. The default spice level for the biryani seemed to be high, so the lassi was a necessary drink to accompany with it. The seasoning, however, was a bit lacking, and the meat portion of the bowl was very small compared to the rice quantity. Overall, a great place to enjoy an authentic Indian food experience, but if you have low spice tolerance, make sure the put the request beforehand.

(The food was 3.5/5) The food is good and the service is excellent. Free papads as starter was a good start. We ordered biryani and galouti kababs. The kababs were great but the biryani was not up to the mark. The ingredients were good and the goat was well cooked but the flavor was too single note.

Great Place for Indian food. Variety of options available veg and non veg. Chicken lollipop was great, tandoori roti was chewy and hard, garlic naan was good, butter chicken was good, was disappointed with chicken Biryani. The ambience was great.

This place USED to be really good, delicious food and drinks. But my recent visit was a hugeeeee disappointment. I don't know if there's been a change in ownership or chefs but all the food was bland and tasted unseasoned, basically like tomato sauce from the basmati to the curry to the masala. The only thing I really enjoyed was my mango lassi with ginger added.

V
VB

The restaurant looks nice and the service was fine, but the food was average. The aalu chaat was tasty, but all the other dishes were just okay, nothing exceptional. The mango cocktail was good. Overall a bit disappointing! There’s something wrong with all the Indian restaurants in Boston, besides madras dosa (love that). We had the aalu chaat, hara bhara kebab (not melt in the mouth, more like a tikki), chicken lollipop, veg biryani (which did not taste like biryani at all and had broccoli and zucchini in it), dal makhani, paneer makhani (too sweet), kadhai paneer, bread basket (dry).

Nice Indian place in Harvard sq area. The location is great. If you can get a table near the window, the view is great. We were impressed by the courteous staff. The kababs we ordered were good. But we loved the mango mousse cake. Highly recommended.

I think the best selling point for this place is the location. Great ambience and great location no doubt. Sitting near the window looking out to great energetic views at Harvard square is an experience. The staff is courteous and service is good. Now the main thing which is food, I find is pretty average. Nothing extraordinare especially when taking prices into account. It's bit pricey for the average tasting food. Have been to this place many a times now to come to this conclusion about the food taste. The last visit was rather disappointing. The menu says entrees served with "Basmati" rice. What was served was no way shape or form basmati. Not even close to it. Naan was rather small and just average. Kadhai paneer tasted okay but dal makhani was not even close to the real deal. It was just average. Mostly go there for the ambience and fine dine kind of experience, food is just okay.

The ambience is good. The Indian flavors are not much infused into the food, most of them are bland and lot of space for improving the dishes.

S

The Chicken Biryani I ordered via Uber Eats was disappointing—just average at best, and the raita was watery and bland. Overall, the food wasn’t worth the price. $30 for a biryani feels steep given the quality, especially compared to other restaurants

S
Sukhada Mukte

I really used to like the food here, but the quality nowadays has gone down. I feel like the dining in food and experience is much better, but their takeout and delivery food absolutely sucks. This is the 3rd time I ordered food delivery of the exact same dish and got really awful food. I ordered the matar paneer at a medium spicy level, all 3 times I got a bowl of paneer with too many peas and absolutely no gravy. I won't even talk about the taste, there was absolutely no flavor at all. If you can't make the dish properly, at least don't rip off your customers by serving them such substandard stuff and charging exorbitant prices for it.

n
nishka monteiro

The food did not taste very authentic and was not well cooked. It also lacked flavour. For appetizers we had the Hara Bhara Kebab which was the only tasty item we had here and Galouti Kebab which was large pieces of meat with very little flavour. For mains we had Maharaja Dal Makhani which was not cooked enough. There were pieces of lentils in the dal that were almost raw. The Nargisi Malai Kofta was okay. The kheema Naan had the same meat from the Galouti Kebab. The service was not very quick and overall a bad experience. Definitely not worth the cost.

If there were an option to give 0 stars, I would have given it to this place. Worst customer service, mediocre food, very overpriced. If you genuinely love/know Indian food, this place is not for you. Let's start with our server Ivan - he was absent-minded and uninterested in working. He mixed up our main course orders and forgot to put our biryani and dessert orders in. 20 mins after we got the main course, we asked him how long we had to wait for the biryani and dessert; he very arrogantly said the kitchen is closed and he can't help us with it. We placed our orders when we sat down to eat; how is this possible that half of our orders reached the kitchen in time and the other half didn’t? Let's talk about food; we ordered many things on the menu half things we didn’t get, and the other half were inedible. The only thing we liked that night was Hara Bhara Kabab. We paid $100+ for this meal. Totally wasted. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

p
pranitha r

This is a big disappointment. food quality is worse. THE CHICKEN IN CHICKEN LOLLIPOP IS SPOILED. We complained the same to the server who straight away ignored what we said. we also over heard while leaving that MALAI KOFTA WAS SMELLING BAD AND NOT TO SERVE ANYMORE. so anyone who came during Christmas eve and ordered chicken lollipop/malai kofta and do not feel well, you are FOOD POISONED. Ordered 1) Mango rum lassi with the tamarind and mint touch - BAD, If you are ordering this drink, make sure you are going with the pain mango rum lassi. 2) Aloo Samosa chat - $14.99-The taste is ok but this is nothing close to a chat. they basically cut a samosa into 2 pieces, added channa and green sauce, tamarind sauce. 3) CHICKEN LOLLIPOP - $14.99- CHICKEN IS SPOILT and could smell it. Make sure you are opening this up and check once before you eat. 4) Chicken biryani - $22.99 - This is a biryani without any masala or Indian spices. Taste is ok. Please do not order this if you are eating alone. This will come for 3 people easily. The service is very very slow, probably the reason why this place looks crowded always. I would not recommend this place food quality wise. High chances of FOOD POISONING. I would definitely never go again here. (Total $100 for 2 with Tip)

WORST RESTAURANT.. DON’T WASTE MONEY. Went here for lunch today (11th august 2023), we ordered chicken samosa, chicken curry, garlic naan, Tandoori roti and goat biryani. Chicken samosa was good but chicken curry was SO BAD the chicken was not cooked properly. Tandoori roti was dry and the goat in goat biryani so literally so uncooked that we hardly ate 1 piece, when my husband complained to the server that the mutton is not cooked properly that person said,”yes because the goat was old it was not baby goat”. I want like what -_- I was literally dumbstruck after listening to that answer. I even puked twice in the evening because of that pathetic food. This restaurant should just shut down, it was that bad plus it is very expensive, I don’t really mind spending those extra dollars but atleast maintain the quality of the food they only want to make money.

Food was good ! Went for the buffet, earlier today 11/11/25 for lunch. It was good, just typical options that one will usually find in an average indian buffet. My problem was the server, after I was handed the the machine for my signature I check the no tip button as I was planning on leaving cash for the tips. The server told me straight in my face to put some tip on the card. I was like buddy relax let me sign it, and I am leaving cash for the tips. I was stunned that the guy waited and was looking after how much I was tapping on the tips and everything. It just absurd! Never going to this place where you are being pressured to tip as you are signing your check !

We went out for dinner with friends for a meeting, and I think we were subjected to disrespectful verbal abuse by the owner or manager of the place. I think this arrogance comes from the fact that he earns a lot of money. We are very dissatisfied. Those who are considering going there should think again; it's not suitable for a family environment. Nobody wants their children to be exposed to offensive language. I definitely do not recommend it. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience. The food I ordered was bland, arrived cold, and raised serious concerns about freshness. For the price, the quality was far below expectations. What bothered me the most was the manager’s attitude. When I tried to give feedback about the issue, I heard the manager using inappropriate and disrespectful language about customers. This kind of behavior is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. Due to both the food quality and the poor customer service, I do not recommend this place. I will not be returning and would not suggest it to others.
