Have had multiple weekend stayovers at Hillbrook over the last four years and love every trip. Usually visit during winter but plan to do a warmer season next year to be able to enjoy the grounds and walking paths more. Five stars are associated with: rooms, food, service, friendly and helpful staff, ease of communication before/during/after, and events. Overwhelmingly accommodating for Gluten Free.
Thanks for a great weekend! Last weekend, my wife and I celebrated my military retirement and over 25 years of marriage, and we had a great experience at Hillbrook. It was the perfect distance from D.C. for a memorable get-away weekend. I definitely recommend the Locke's Nest room that overlooks the grounds, it's filled with tons of natural light from all of its rooftop windows, and complete with its own staircase entrance within the main building. The staff made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived, and their hospitality was unmatched. All the best! Nick
This was our 3rd time staying at the Hillbrook Inn but first time in a cottage. There was an issue with our room in the main house (water leak or something weather related I presume) so we were upgraded to the Spring Cottage. Our first full day on the property we had had a 90 minute couples massage during the day and then the 3 course dinner in the evening. The food was excellent, especially the blood orange tart that we had for dessert. The cottage to ourselves was an unexpected bonus. Gas fire place, large shower with an even larger soaking tub. The only thing we did not enjoy was that the mattress in the cottage was extremely soft and had a dip in the middle. Some people love a soft mattress but we prefer firm. We did rotate the mattress for night 2, which helped somewhat with the dip. The staff could not have been nicer. Everyone was attentive without being intrusive, from the front desk staff to the servers to the room attendants. Even the property maintenance people were offering to help with anything we needed. We will be going back again next year for sure!
From the moment you drive up, the property feels special. Deer and other wildlife appear along the approach, giving the Hillbrook Inn, particularly the Hawthorn House, a quiet estate-like atmosphere that immediately slows you down and pulls you out of city mode. The food is exceptional, truly Michelin comparable. Every dish is thoughtful, balanced, and beautifully executed. Just as impressive is the staff. They are warm, attentive, and genuinely impeccable. Their focus on the small details makes the entire experience feel effortless and deeply intentional. This is not a traditional luxury hotel, and that is what makes it stand out. It has an understated elegance paired with a deep sense of peacefulness. It feels like sleeping in on a Sunday morning after a demanding week in the city, calm, restorative, and exactly what you did not realize you needed. A rare place that gets everything right without ever trying too hard.
Hillbrook Inn and Spa is an absolute gem of an experience for enjoying a first class Bed and Breakfast. The property and buildings are beautiful. Immaculately decorated and polished as though it were for a President (George Washington owned the property at one time!) Aside from the physical--the buildings, rooms, and spectacular interiors--the team that works at Hillbrook are in perfect synch. They attend to every need, are professional, kind, and friendly. My wife and I really enjoyed the wonderful meals prepared by world class chefs and served by the smartest restaurant staff. Not only did it taste out of this world, we got an education on the food and wine like we've never experienced. We really loved our vacation, and recommend Hillbrook highly for anyone considering a stay.
We eloped at Hillbrook! We wanted to just show up have a romantic and relaxing time, that’s exactly what we got. Mark made the whole process easy and instilled our confidence in him, the staff, and other vendors they use. We were completely hands off. Everything was perfect, beautiful, and stress free. Everyone was so friendly, helpful, and welcoming we appreciate all you all did! Thank you so much for making it so special 🖤🤍 we will be back.
Wonderful quaint inn near Charles Town, WV. Delicious food, excellent service and many great amenities such as a fire pit, extensive grounds and a spa. Rooms were pristine and quite comfortable. Inn is off the beaten path but setting is beautiful! I highly recommend!
This place was lovely, quaint and perfect for a very relaxing getaway. We actually liked that the hawthorn building we were in was a little drive away- it was very secluded. Everyone we encountered who worked there was helpful and very hospitable. We did dinner the first night and loved it- great meal, service was amazing. Breakfast too was fantastic. The spa was great and relaxing. We would love to return.
We discovered Hillbrook Inn 10 years ago returning from a vacation. Lovely place. So when deciding where to spend our 38th wedding anniversary it was an easy decision. Went there for one night. Stayed in the Winter Cottage ( stayed in the Summer Cottage last visit). Room is really romantic. Gas fireplace, comfortable bed, large walk-in shower and soaking tub. Opted for the date night package so a bottle of Prosecco was waiting in the room (I wish it was on ice, but 15 minutes in the freezer worked) as well as a dozen beautiful roses. Dinner was the highlight of the evening. Four courses (actually 5) with expert wine pairing. Michelin quality!! Our server (Trevor I think) was extremely knowledgeable about the wines. And as many pointed out, breakfast is equally as good. Will try not to wait 10 years to return.
What a magical place for a special get away!! The setting makes you feel as though you have traveled far from any urban areas. The butterflies fluttering all around us as we walked from the gatehouse to the main house were amazing. We stayed in serenity and were so happy with us. I hate to tell others how special it was for fear we won't be able to book it the next time we want to visit. The meals (dinner and breakfast) were beyond superb - especially the dinner. The little treats were a nice surprise and delicious. The horseradish cream with the scallops, the mushroom pate, the chevre with the salad, and the chocolate creme brulee were particularly noteworthy. I'll be returning for a meal even if I can't book a room!! The staff is professional, from Mark to Kerry to Jessie: they are all friendly and accommodating. I can't say enough nice things about Hillbrook and look forward to my next visit.
Our first visit to the Inn. Friends got married this past weekend. We stayed in the Spring Cottage. The room was really cute and spacious. The king size bed and pillows were very comfortable. I usually don't expect that so it was really nice sleeping comfortably. The level of service provided for the wedding was excellent. The staff deserves every bit of the 5 stars. The grounds are beautiful. The Inn is so cool. Old and rustic. We loved it. The food was excellent as well. If we're back in the area we will stay here again.
A lovely place to stay for a little getaway. We stayed in one of the cottages and had a lovely dinner at the Inn. Great food and great service. We will be back!
Amazing service, great time will most definitely be coming back here again. I couldn’t thank them enough for a wonderful dinner, made for a very special Valentine’s Day.
Wife and I had two interesting and relaxing days at a lovely location scouted out in 1730's by George Washington when he worked as a surveyor and later purchased by his family so yeah, he knew the area and they picked the best of the best. Staff is on top of their situations, I didn't talk to anyone that seemed overwhelmed or uncaringly retired in place and that is a treat. The breakfasts were just way above average as was the spa treatment. No complaints and will be back often.
I drive back and forth between Florida and New York twice a year, bringing my two dogs. I have stayed at Hillbrook now about four years. We stay in their pet friendly cottages, a 5 minute walk (or 2 minute drive) to the inn for dinner and breakfast. The cottages are so lovely and so welcoming. There are bowls and towels and treats for the pups. They are very private and quiet, and it is very easy to take your dogs out for walks. The grounds are lovely and it is so nice to wake up to the birds and the flowers and the green. The staff is all very accommodating and friendly. The breakfasts and dinners are really good and it's so nice to have a drink and dinner and then just fall into bed! We love it and go back time and time again.
We first came to Hillbrook 4 years ago. We live in petersburg virginia and the drive out is beautiful. I love all of the horse farms . Everyone at the inn is so accommodating and friendly. The rooms are beautiful. The food is out of this world !!!! I can't say enough about this amazing bed and breakfast and look forward to going back we've decided every year. I highly recommend this Inn for a great romantic getaway. Keep up the amazing work all of you do!!
We absolutely loved staying in the Winter Cottage! Just a few steps from the main lodge. We thoroughly enjoyed the 6-course wine pairing dinner - the wines paired extremely well with the incredible food! A culinary delight! Highly recommend for a romantic get-away! And the service was spot on! Thank you!
What a hidden gem among the beautiful scenery of West Virginia! We loved our stay in the main house. The room was clean and comfortable. The people were so kind and helpful. We had a the four course tasting with wine pairing…delicious! Breakfast was amazing too!
Had the most enchanting stay at the Hillbrook Inn! We were fortunate enough to stay in the Summer Suite, which features what might be the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. The peaceful, off-the-beaten-path location creates an atmosphere of complete serenity. The dining experience here is absolutely exceptional. The included breakfast went far beyond typical hotel fare, offering gourmet dishes that started our day perfectly. Dinner was truly memorable - and we weren't the only ones having a special evening, as we got to witness a beautiful proposal at the table next to us! I treated myself to a massage at their spa facility. While the spa space itself is modest, the quality of the treatment was outstanding. Sometimes the most amazing experiences come in simple packages, and this was definitely the case here. What truly sets Hillbrook apart is their staff. Every single person we encountered demonstrated genuine warmth and attentiveness. From check-in to check-out, the service was impeccable without ever feeling stuffy.
What a wonderful spot! The inn is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mtns just southwest of Harpers Ferry and offers a tranquil slice of solitude. My wife and I visited this beautiful getaway on Mother's Day weekend with one of our furry friends who enjoyed it every bit as much as us! Our cottage was cozy and romantic - if a bit dated in spots - and just a few steps from the main building. The staff was exceptional - especially Blake (at check-in), Jessi (dining room) and Mark P. They were simply fantastic - friendly, informative and helpful - and will bend over backwards for you. We enjoyed the chef's tasting menu for dinner and the next morning's breakfast was perfect. This is a particularly great escape from MD, DC or VA. We can't wait to be back-
We were at Hillbrook for my husband's 50th. A quiet weekend away to unplug, and it totally delivered. Everything was top notch. Our cottage was adorable and we loved the private patio that looked out onto a horse farm. The fireplace and soaking tub were divine. Every person we encountered was pleasant and helpful. Food was spectacular. We will definitely return.
I took my mother on an overnight girls trip for her 75th birthday! She had an amazing time. Every employee at Hillbrook Inn was kind and courteous, and went out of their way to make her birthday stay extra special. When we arrived in our room at Hawthorne House there was a birthday card waiting for her on the bed. When we went to dinner, they seated us at the table in front of the fireplace and greeted my mom with a happy birthday. The person preparing our breakfast even came out of the kitchen to speak with my mom about the way she would like her breakfast prepared. The attention to detail and the little extras really made this trip special. When our fireplace was not working on arrival, the hospitality manager was very prompt at fixing it. We had a fire waiting in the fireplace when we returned from dinner that night. Everyone was very attentive to all our needs. The grounds and rooms were beautiful! The only reason I took one little point off in this area was because our bathroom vanity did not have any lights above the sink area. There were 8 bulbs laying on a bench seat in the bathroom. Not sure if they were the old ones or the new ones that someone had just forgotten to change. Overall, this was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend this place for a romantic getaway. I'd love to come back in the spring or summer when all the flowers are in bloom.
We spent 3 days and 2 nights in the cottages, did a tasting menu one night and a couples massage the next day. Very much enjoyed the room, including the large bathtub. Meals were great! Breakfast was our favorite. We appreciated the kindness and attention of the staff. It was a wonderful, relaxing weekend- we will come back
We have stayed and had dinner on 3 occasions. Each was a wonderful experience. The staff was welcoming, attentive and pleasant. Both our dinner and breakfast were well prepared and delicious. The portions are appropriate. The house wine was a bit pricey at $18 a glass. Our waitress was terrific. The cottages are quaint and comfortable. Convenient to the Inn. Communication from the inn was thorough and timely. We had an issue with our bill but upon calling the next day it was addressed professionally and quickly and apologetically taken care of. We will continue to stay and eat at The Hillbrook Inn.
We stayed her for my wife's birthday. She loved the Serenity suite. It was a wonderful place to stay. The staff are Awesome and So nice. This was just a Wonderful place to stay. Beautiful and peaceful. So clean. The Food was GREAT. Thank you Hillbrook Inn.
We stayed this past weekend as my husband was racing at the Summit Point Racetrack. Beautiful place that was super convenient. The staff were very accommodating. The breakfast was outstanding. We also had dinner one night and that was also incredible. If I had one gripe, it would be that I wish the driveway was paved. It would have made for a beautiful walking path. The gravel was hard to navigate. Other than that, I would highly recommend.
We came here for our honeymoon, amazing service, food to die for (kisses to the Chef) Kerry, Kathy and Mark amazing amazing and kind people. We will definitely be back. You guys made our trip unforgettable. Thankyou for everything.
We went to Hillbrook for a nice weekend away after our wedding. It was the perfect place to fully relax. The rooms and food were fantastic as well… the dinner is worth the price. A couples massage was affordable and truly relaxing. Staff was kind and sweet as well. We loved it so much we extended our stay and are looking to book yearly for our anniversary. During our stay we did accidentally get charged twice for our room but after chatting with staff they fixed it. It not a negative per se but certainly just something to review before checkout.
This was our 4th time to Hillbrook Inn over the last 10 years. As always the food and the accommodations were exceptional. The new event center made New Years Eve even better.
My husband and I just booked this for our babymoon and it was exactly what we were looking somewhere where we could relax for a day away from the hustle and bustle. The grounds were so charming and looked like it was taken straight out of a story book. Our servers at breakfast were so kind and personable and the food was delicious!
The Hillside Inn was nothing short of amazing! We were pleasantly surprised with the level of our dining experience and overnight stay at the Inn. The staff were friendly and helpful with any of our requests and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Can't wait to come back!
If you like cozy fantasy books and puzzles this is your jam. Such a lovely place and I highly recommend. Excellent food and scenery. Stayed in the fall cottage. The rooms are in good shape but could be updated a bit but by no means a reason not to stop. Dog friendly.
Very clean and super friendly staff. I would highly recommend!! We were sent there by the company "Weekend on a Whim". Book your next surprise weekend getaway through them, and they may send you to a top notch place like this as well.
What a hidden gem! I had a change in plans and was looking for a relaxing place and called them with the hopes of getting a last minute reservation. They were so nice and got me a room. It was so comfortable. I had the four course dinner and it was amazing. I loved how they listed the purveyors and used as much local food as possible. Breakfast was included in the room price and was also delicious. I didn't get a chance to try the spa but some of the other guests raved about their massages. I highly recommend Hillbrook and will definitely be back.
Hillbrook Inn is an idillic retreat nestled in the beautiful countryside of West By God Virginia. I fell in Love with WV whilst here. The property resonates with tranquility. We were graced with views of deer in the creek, turkeys, bunnies and birds. My partner and I stayed in two different rooms and both were delightful with comfortable beds and charming fireplaces. Our dinner was delicious. The staff were more than accommodating, they were welcoming. We are eagerly awaiting a return in the future.
Amazing service and the food was excellent! Mark was extremely helpful from the time we made our reservation for our son’s 16th birthday. Mark had his baker make an amazing looking cake to celebrate our son’s birthday, and his recent black belt accomplishment in karate. Mark greeted our son upon arrival and brought us to Kerry who took great care of us the rest of the evening. The staff did an outstanding job making our son feel special and helping us celebrate his milestone birthday. We appreciate all the fine touches they did to make the day special for him. We definitely recommend the Hillbrook Inn for celebrating your special occasions. Thank you, Jeremy and Courtney
From the very first moment we decided to book Hillbrook Hotel and Spa, we knew we were in for something special. What began as a simple plan to elope—after spa treatments, obviously—turned into one of the most meaningful experiences of our lives. When booking our spa appointments, we casually mentioned our elopement plans. Brooke (I believe that was her name) immediately connected us with Mark and from that moment on, the level of care and attention we received was absolutely top-notch. To our delight, Mark was also able to perform the wedding ceremony himself. What started as a low-key elopement became something incredibly intimate and unforgettable. I have traveled all over the world, and I can honestly say that the guest service we experienced here in West Virginia was beyond exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the hotel staff took such thoughtful care of us—snacks, bottled water, and genuine warmth throughout our stay. Mark truly took charge and handled every detail of our big day: the flowers, the cake (which was made the very day of our wedding!), the ceremony itself—every detail was flawless. And the food—absolutely incredible. Truly unlike anything else. Every bite felt special. We recommend Hillbrook Hotel and Spa with complete joy and enthusiasm. This place is now part of our story, and we will be returning every year to celebrate and continue this beautiful tradition. Thank you! What a gift.
Love this little gem! Have been coming here for years and absolutely love it We stayed in the Summer Cottage and loved the double shower. Everything was clean and service was top notch. Definitely recommend staying for dinner at the inn. Regina is an absolutely amazing chef. She truly went out of her way to make our experience memorable, providing us with a last minute cheese/charcuterie board and spending time with us at the table! The food and service was 5stars!!! I cannot recommend it enough! The only issue we had is that the WiFi is horrible, they really need to upgrade to starlink
My wife and I had a magical time here this past weekend! Celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary, we first came to Hillbrook in the middle of the pandemic in 2020, and were treated so well we had to come back. The hour long couples massage was luxurious and every bit of food from breakfast to the incredibly well laid out dinner was worth every penny. If you are thinking of treating yourself to a wonderful experience, look no further than the beautiful mountains and hills of WV at Hillbrook Inn and Spa!
Hillbrook was a find for my wife and I. The staff could not have been more accommodating and responsive. Everything about getting to the property and access was so detailed. Any time we spoke with the staff prior to arriving, it was always a pleasant helpful conversation. In the dining room, always greeted by such nice folks. Hannah was a wonderful server! 5 stars for her. We enjoyed everything. Not much happening in town but really, walking the property is all you need and get back in to cozy fire in your room. Nice weekend get away spot so close to DC, VA and MD
Review of restaurant only: We are locals, dined on a Saturday night in the holiday season. Food at dinner was absolute top notch, comparable to the Charleston in Harbor East Baltimore or Antrim 1844. French portions, always lovely, so tasteful, and you don't walk out feeling gross. Service was 9/10 would have been improved if "you guys" and "no problem" were eliminated from the script. Fireside was wonderful, lighting beautiful, music lovely. Two suggestions: take coats at the entrance so my heavy winter gear doesn't need to enter this beautiful dining room - and also I can show off my dress for more than the 5 seconds it takes to sit down. Second, pad the chairs. Whatever padding they had is collapsed so you are sitting on the wood frame. Wine program is outstanding.
My husband and I just came back from 3 nights at Hillbrook Inn & Spa and couldn't have been happier! We stayed in the Spring Cottage, which is a separate building on the grounds of the Inn. The room was luxurious and inviting. The King-size bed was very warm and comfortable. Having a gas fireplace was an added bonus because it was pretty chilly at night. But, really, the best bit was the unbelievably delicious and generous breakfast. Wow! We highly recommend this place for a lovely getaway from the Washington DC area.
We absolutely loved our stay at the beautiful Hillbrook Inn & Spa! From the moment we arrived, felt welcomed and completely at home. The property is charming, peaceful and full of character with a perfect mix of comfort and romance. Every detail, from the cozy rooms to the amazing breakfast, was thoughtfully done. We fell in love with it so much that we decided to book our elopement wedding here for next year! Its truly a special place that captures both heart and soul. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway or a memorable celebration spot!
We recently stayed at The Hillbrook Inn and it was a great experience. The Winter Cottage was a well appointed and very comfortable accommodation. The food was exceptional. My wife had the filet mignon and I had the sea bass. Both entree’s were well prepared and wonderfully presented. We strolled and enjoyed the beautiful and well tended grounds. The staff was accommodating, helpful, and offered a warm welcome. We happily give The Hillbrook our recommendation, well done and bravo. We look forward to returning in the future.
We have stayed at Hillbrook 2 different times and it has been great both times. Restaurant for both dinner and Breakfast has been excellent and the rooms are beautiful. We used the spa for this most recent visit and it was convenient to have on site. The spa was good, not my favorite massage experience, but still nice. Highly recommend. Definitely worth making a visit.
What a discovery! Love Hillbrook and have been going there several times with the family for a weekend getaway. The main house is very historical, cute and the rooms are well appointed. I stayed in the Bramford Suite in the main house and it has its own little entrance with a place to sit outside. Large comfortable room. I gave the room 4 stars only because the fireplace wasn't working, although the room was warm and cozy without it. Service was incredible by the wait staff, but I gave it 4 stars because housekeeping forgot to make up my room 2 days in a row! We had a 3-course dinner, but really it was 6 courses because they gave us little things to eat in between the courses. Kashif, executive chef and Regina, executive sous chef did an outstanding job! I can still taste their food!. Absolutely delicious and quite Michelin quality, but what made it special was Regina came to the tables to talk to the patrons which makes it feel very personal. Loved her and will be back for an outstanding meal for sure. The Locke's Nest is my favorite room, but lots of stairs. The Point is a smaller room with low ceilings. My daughter stayed in the Summer Cottage and loved it. Double showers, fireplace and very comfortable. Our family goes every December with beautiful decorations for the holidays. Shepherdstown and Harper's Ferry are good places to spend the day working around little antique and specialty shops with lots of places to eat. Our family loves Hillbrook and we shall be back!
Hillbrook is a beautiful hotel, the staff friendly and the dinner is excellent, we will gladly return. Having said this: There is the main house and a number of external locations. We had a 5 min drive to the farmhouse we were staying at. It was not too big of a hassle and the suite we had was beautiful. The farmhouse had a fullsize kitchen and a parlour with a dinner table. We used it in the evenings for playing games. But when dining at the main house, the need to keep sober for the return drive bereft me of some of the experience. I wish I would have known that beforehand. We did a number of day hikes and Hillbrook was well located for that, a whole number of beautiful spots are available and Shenandoah not too far away. I especially recommend to visit Harpers Ferry and take a walk to the Maryland Heights. One small thing with room for improvement: WiFi at the farmhouse was mediocre, streaming a video was not possible but then again, having a bit of a digital detox was part of our vacation.
Hillbrook Inn was simply phenomenal! The rooms were cozy, elegant, and comfortable. The four-course dinner and wine pairing were top notch (our server Riley went above and beyond to enhance the experience). We will be back again soon!
This was our first time visiting Hillbrook Inn and will not be our last. We had wonder parents getaway, and were able to experience both the Spa and the dining experiences during our stay. What stood out to us: Service and food (both in flavor and uniqueness). What where the opportunities: furniture and upkeep. So starting with those highlights, the communication, service level, and sheer hospitality were awesome. The inn stayed in contact, was able to accommodate schedule changes, all with a smile. The service staff at breakfast and lunch were fantastic. Very engaging, versed on menus, and just overall helpful. The food was awesome! Breakfast was served very fresh and very hot! You tell each dish is prepared with each order. At breakfast we received little pastry treats both days and my goodness they were delicious. When it came to our one dinner, the menu is very limited, but we still both found something we enjoyed. Again preparation was great, food was hot and fresh, no warming lamps here! My compliments go to everyone involved in the food experience. Now a couple things to update. The two arm chairs in our cottage were leaning and obviously worn out to the point you would hope they would have already been replaced. The mattress did had a noticeable sinking area in the middle and back support was very lacking. When it came to upkeep, I might a little too picky here, but we had to wipe down the table and chairs on our porch as they were covered in pollen, dust, and dirt. Also there were pebbles all over the floor and under the rugs in our room from the walkways on the property. Some I am sure we tracked in, but many were found upon our arrival. Lastly in 2025, I would expect a little larger tv and most definitely a smart TV in the room. This was an outdated 32" I think and using direct TV. We only watched TV one evening because it was raining so hard outside but we had to watch whatever we could find and it frize many times. I also did only give 4 stars for location, but wanted to clarify the grounds and inn are awesome, but there is not much to do within 15-20min. We could not find a winery less than 30min away, the only brewery in a reasonable drive is closed a few weekdays, so we had to drive a bit more then we expected. Not say they can control that, but something I think should be considered when booking your next getaway. Again the pros outweigh the cons 5x over. Thank you Hillbrook for a relaxing and memorable time.
We stayed in the Hawthron home for our 29th Wedding Anniversary. It was explain to me 2 weeks after I made the Reservation that there was going to be a Family Event at the Main house over our time stay and No dinner accomadations could be offered. That was a little Sad😔 The accomadations were Fantastic! However the drive over was a little father then we thought. There was a Storm that came throu and knocked out the DirectTV(Hate DirectTV) and we had No TV service to use. While it was a Relaxing time for us... We missed watching a movie and relaxing in bed. The other guests seem to have the TV service... But ours was out. We did have a guest service rep. Stop by to check the TV but we were told it was out and nothing could be done. The AM breakfast in bed was completed by driving to the Main house to pick up by my husband. The Breakfast was very Yummy, just did not like that it could Not be brought to us. In All we enjoyed our 1 night stay. I would however, recommend a New mattress for the East room...its at the End of its life😊
Fantastic experience! For somewhere so off the beaten track we loved the Spring Cottage accommodation with our pups. Chef’s dinner & breakfast were amazing! Fresh & full of flavor! We will be back.
Hillbrook is a quirky nice place that represents a differentiated albeit less polished weekend escape from the DC area. I visited recently as a couple. We spent one night, had massages and dinner and breakfast. It's all largely reasonably priced and the general area is fairly bucolic. We stayed at the Hawthorne House which is about a 7 min drive from the main property. It is a stately modern house and our room was clean and well appointed. It is slightly bizarre how far it is from the main house and that there are just guests staying there with zero Hillbrook personnel. But fine. The massages were excellent so check there. The meals were directionally good but not exceptional. And the restaurant setting was cute but not particularly striking which is how I would describe the whole main Inn complex. Dinner took a long time to happen but our servers were good. I think as long as you appreciate what the Hillbrook Inn is and what it is not, you are set up for success. For a nice hour-ish retreat outside the City and something different than Salamander, or visiting Harpers Ferry and want a solid stay, then Hillbrook Inn is good. But if you want a luxury experience or a really manicured property, experience or nearby town, then this is not it. But thats okay!
Beautiful idilic place out of the beaten path. I went with a friend , as a relaxing girl trip versus a romantic getaway. The restaurant is a real gem, and the highlight of our stay. The first night I stayed in a room that was noisy ( right above the restaurant, and the exhaust fan had a loud hum and vibration that went on the entire night), plus no blinds - the bed right under east facing windows … they switched me to a much nicer room the following night, but interestingly the first room costed me 100$ more than the second ( probably Saturday night versus Sunday night) … and not even a discount for having had a crappy night. Told them they should put no one in that room, really. Maybe should be an overflow room if something extraordinary happens. The spa is ok, I had a relaxing treatment, Angie was great. Surprisingly there is no map of the grounds, no room service for food at all, and if the restaurant is booked you have no way of being accommodated even if you are a guest. Not a lot of guidance on activities to do at the area, you have to be very self motivated and look for things. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, apparently belong to George Washington at some point. They could do a better job in giving you a bit of history too. All and all we had a good stay. But definitely not a “ customer oriented “ place.
Not what we thought. The main house and facilities are nice, but not worth the cost if you are not on property. Although it is not explicitly stated on the website, the guest houses are not on property. They are five minutes away, taking poorly lit backroads and driving across railroad tracks. You reap none of the benefits of staying in the main house. Access to the bar, spa, and restaurant are all difficult to manage when staying off property. Off property in a home with other guests, no staff and no security.
Actually it was disappointing. My wife and I celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary here. When we initially made reservations for the farmhouse, there was no indication the farmhouse was not on the main grounds of the inn. It was 1.5 miles away. When we arrived, there were no towels, no bath mat and there was a dirty towel from a previous guest hanging behind the bathroom door. Luckily, the housekeeping door in the main entrance way was open and we were able to replace our towels. The room had multiple “Pincher” bugs crawling around the room, but only noticed them on our last day. Save yourself the “wine tour” expense-again the description online is very vague. It’s just you and your significant other, friend, etc. in the back seat of a car being driven around to 2 wineries. My wife and I thought there was going to be other couples on a large bus type vehicle. Needless to say, we were disappointed. Then when you get to the wineries, you’re just sent off to do your thing..Nobody talks to you about the wine, grapes, etc. Complete waste of $. The landscaping on the main ground and where we stayed was all overgrown with weeds and looks terrible. In closing we won’t be back and for the $ we paid to stay, i would’ve expected a more higher end feel and basic standards met. Highlights : Food from the Inn was good/Customer Service was good. Employees were very nice.
We booked online and specifically checked that we had a dog. They then call back w in the hour and say the room we booked isn’t dog friendly. No problem, just cancel our reservation as you don’t have a room that is suitable. The lady says we will have to charge you 25.00! Seriously- you didn’t have another dog friendly room and we have to pay 25.00? I have a suggestion/ don’t let a customer book a room when they have elected for a dog friendly room- it is called technology/ is it 2025, no 1990. Your discretion in this regard seems likely indicative of the overall experience we would have encountered-
I went here for my birthday spent Wednesday - Saturday. We had a pleasant room experience and breakfast experience effort for Saturday 12/20 the chief was very loud about my partners dietary restrictions which there was no issues the past days it made breakfast very uncomfortable. We could hear the chief question her allergy from the kitchen. It was very unprofessional and rude.
While I appreciate you have a late cancellation policy, charging full price for a service that didn’t occur seems excessive. I called to let them know that I would be late, and they said they would speak to the massage therapist and call me back. I did not get a return call. So I cancelled. Again- totally cool with paying a fee but full price is ridiculous. I would have taken a shorter massage or paid a smaller fee. Boo. I will not return.
