Customers rave about the exceptional tacos, particularly the pastor and tilapia varieties, highlighting their freshness and deliciousness. The chicken tacos, uniquely dressed with pimento cheese, pico de gallo, and sweet chili sauce, offer a delightful balance of flavors. Beyond the food, patrons appreciate the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Don't miss their signature red and green sauces, adding a spicy kick to any meal.
El Jeficito is a family-run restaurant with delicious and authentic tacos. Customers rave about the fresh ingredients, unique flavors, and friendly service. The al pastor, fish, and chorizo tacos are particularly popular. It's a small place, better for takeout.
Tip: This is not a place to sit down and have a meal- it's tiny. Consider takeout or visiting their food truck.
Food is great! Need to improve ordering process. Maybe put names on orders to make it easier to match people with orders.
very very very good food, Burrito awesome and My wife said the chicken tacos was divine.
My go-to meal is the veggie torta but everything is great from there. Reasonably priced as well
Best tacos in Durham! Easily adapted to vegan and full of flavor!!
The food is delicious! We came on a weekday evening, they were pretty busy but the wait was WORTH IT!
Some solid tacos and nachos! Portions weren't massive but everything tasted great. They also got the good stuff for drinks (cold Jarritos and Mexican coke) so you know they know what's up
Wonderfully creative ingredient combos! Loved the chicken, steak and chorizo tacos and the beans were delicious too!
Best tacos in Town! Will definitely be coming back. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Nice to see good restaurants opening up with all the craziness going on
Amazing food, even for people with good taste. Dine in experience is minimal - exactly what you would expect from a hole in the wall, amazing food with no frills. There is a park just around the corner which I recommend.
I had the breakfast burrito and it was so big I ate it for lunch too! Delicious, speedy and friendly! Will definitely be visiting again!
We visited their food truck for the first time at an early morning event. Best breakfast burritos I’ve ever had. Still thinking about them!
The tacos were superb. I had the steak and bulgogi and both were phenomenal. Definitely worth trying both!
Best tacos I’ve ever had. Each one is unique with surprising and incredible flavors. Great service!
Service was great and the bull was so much fun. Maggie got us our food right away with a smile on her face. 10/10
If you have not had the opportunity to stop by this location, you’re missing out. Absolutely wonderful Service, very friendly with absolutely fantastic food. will definitely stop by again.
This place is AMAZING!!! THEIR TACOS ARE DELICIOUS! Rice and beans are amazing too! I had a steak, fish, and chorizo tacos. A must try!
Super yummy!! Location is nothing fancy but perfect for dinner after a swim at the quarry. Will definitely be back !
Loved the tacos from the food truck! Some of the best I've had, really yummy and filling, variety of flavors was great.
Excellent chicken tacos but it could be better setup for done in. Gave it 5 stars for perfecting the food I don't really care about ambiance much
Food was prepared quickly and my complicated order was put together correctly. Use DoorDash for pickup or delivery. Avoid Grubhub, it's way more expensive!
This place is exceptional! Simply done street style Mexican food done well. Make this your Taco Tuesday tradition!
Really enjoy the veggie quesadilla. They consistently have lots of veggies but not so many that they are falling out and making a mess
Randomly stopped in after hiking at Eno River Park. This is THE place to go to get great Mexican food. Stop in! You won't be dissapointed!
I had some of their tacos at the zinc House event, and they were amazing!
The food is just sooo good. The bulgolgi Tacos are my favorite. The people who work here are wonderfully nice.
Their tacos are insanely good! They are by far the best tacos I have had in the triangle.
Just what you'd expect from a taco joint. Good, tasty and fast. Staff is super friendly.
Awesome!!! First had their food off of their truck but having a restaurant to go to makes it even better!! I cannot compliment there food enough. Great, great place!
This is our go-to place for carry-out tacos. The food is fantastic, the price is good, the people are nice, and the orders are ready in no time. I love this place -- can't wait to go again soon.
I don’t write reviews often, but my family and I deemed it necessary to write a review about this place. We have ordered tacos from this restaurant on more than one occasion. After the first experience, I would literally sit at work and daydream of these lovelies. I had the beef and tilapia and both are equally amazing. Also, the rice and beans are fire. Get it.
I am picky about my tortas, pupasas and tacos. This has absolutely dethroned my favorite spot in all categories. Handmade tortillas, quick and friendly service, and the food is incredible. I will be bringing my friends and family here, and am pumped that I live so close!! P.S. Get the churros, they won't last long until they're sold out!!
Hands-down our favorite taco place. We tried their food truck (at Fortnight Brewery in Cary). We loved the fish tacos so much we drove 26 miles to the Durham restaurant. This time we tried the Tajadas this time and were mot disappointed. Gotta try everything. Way above your average tacos and well priced.
Wow! Go here! Clean indoor seating area, friendly staff, creative menu, quick service. The food was top notch. Tried the hash taco and cauliflower taco - big flavor! They included a red sauce and green sauce (red was HOT!) with your meal.
We ordered the tilapia tacos, steak burrito with hash, and side of nachos and it was all so amazing!! The tacos were on point with their flavors (mangos and the slaw sooo good) and the burrito so stuffed I couldn’t finish it in on sitting (streak was so flavorful!). Def satisfied and cant wait to order again soon!
This was my first time eating there. Both of the people working were friendly and answered any questions I had about the menu. The restaurant is very clean, and the burrito I got was delicious. Maybe one of the best burritos I have had! Would highly recommend going if you are in the area.
Awesome, flavorful tacos. Indoor and outdoor seating so this is a great place to stop if you’re traveling with your dog. Fast and friendly service. We will definitely be coming back. Thank you!
Wonderful delicious fresh tacos on home made tortillas is a treat at any day! We called the order in and picked picked up in 15 min. The place is small and sparkling clean. Employees wearing masks. Will repeatedly it soon!
El Jefecito makes our whole family happy, which is hard to do with 2 adults and 4 kids. We LOVE their tacos — the chicken taco is the best! We get takeout from there about once/week and it’s consistently fresh and delicious!
We ate here twice in one week while visiting family in NC. Delicious cauliflower and goat cheese tacos. Nopal hash brown tacos were super good, too. FANTASTIC vegetarian options. I still crave them now that I am back in rural NY. Que rico! Gracias!
Kind, wonderful people! You’ll have to come try their tacos! Chicken is my favorite! Next time I am definitely going to get Papusas! You will not regret stopping in, delicious!
Exceptionally tasty tacos! We tried the chicken, fish, chorizo and bulgogi and loved them all. Hope they're back in our area again soon. Highly recommend
Tried the chicken, cauliflower, and Korean BBQ tacos and they were out of this world. It was clear the toppings for each meat base were carefully selected to provide a full flavor profile, and all of the ingredients were top notch 👌
This place is so good and the owner is so nice. If you love tacos then you'll love this place. The tacos were so flavorful and they have a lot of tasty choices to choose from. Love this place.
The food is so good that your tongue will punch your face to get to it. Everything is fresh and they sport an A rating. Great to eat after hiking Eno Quarry or Duke Forest.
I’m addicted to the fish tacos! Tilapia is my favorite fish and mango is one of my favorite fruits. The steak taco is amazing too. Haven’t had anything bad there yet!
Excellent fun food with thoughtful flavor combinations. Each element was perfect. Restaurant was super clean and everyone was very nice!
Get the chicken tacos. I need to go check out their breakfast. A little more expensive BUT you pay for the quality. It’s spotless , they’re wearing their masks, and such a wonder /helpful staff to talk to. I look forward to talking to them every time I stop by.
I was visiting my in-laws for a week and ate here at least 4 times. Every taco I had was wonderful. I wish I could get them this good up in Maine!
this is a wonderful restaurant. The ingredients seem to be pretty fresh and the flavors are yummy. I like to get the torta with chorizo. It comes with jalapeños which is the perfect amount of spice for this white boy. They have a delicious Verde sauce and a nice spicy red sauce as well. I bet they have spicier stuff too. I have always ordered their food as Takeaway, and they were happy to provide knives and forks and napkins. I could use a lime wedge with that torta. 😘
I love getting the tortas and the Pupusas!! Delicious and quick!
Absolutely the best Mexican place in Durham! It looks unassuming from the outside but the food is delicious and authentic, plus the service is so friendly. Can’t recommend it enough!
The best al pastor traditional Ive had in Durham! A++++
This is not a place to sit down and have a meal- it's tiny. I suppose you could in a pinch. That said, I walked over from Der Nachbar and got some of the most amazing tacos I've had in a long time. The food here is YUMMY!
One of the food trucks was at Eno River Brewing in Hillsborough, and is one reason we chose to visit the brewery! Staff was nice and ordering was easy, wait time was short and you get a pager (so you don't have to stand around), and the food was excellent. Fresh, even plated nicely!
Jefecito was at Steel String at Pluck Farm this evening. I got the 3-taco mix-and-match plate: fish (tilapia), bulgogi, and chorizo. Each taco was generously filled, distinctive, and delicious. 5-stars- easy!
I can not recommend this business enough, I've visited their food truck at Bombshell Brewery and now at Rex Heart Hostpital. Their tilapia tacos are out of this world, fresh, and incredibly delicious. I'm absolutely planning a trip to their restaurant. Reasonable prices, wonderful customer service, and fantastic tacos!!
Enjoyed El Jefecito’s food truck at ZincHouse Winery and Brewery. Great to wash down El Jefecito’s guac and chips with a good, local brew! You must try their red and green sauces which are politely spicy. Made an excellent addition to the guacamole and chips. Looking forward to trying your vegetarian tacos next.
So good!! Great spot you can call in or place your order inside as well as dine in with the option of picnic tables outside. They also have a food truck more info for that on their website. They serve fish, chicken, steak and veggie options. My favorite is the fish tacos I've also had veggie quesadillas and chicken and steak tacos, I'm working my way down the menu :) check them out.
Tacos are really good !! I wish I took some photos. But all taste delicious, the flavors are a bit different but work together perfectly. I was completely full after 4 tacos and a few bites of their nachos. Family run to boot. Enjoy after a day at Eno!
I was pleasantly surprised to find this gem! I decided to try the Chicken tacos. Dressed with pimento cheese, pico de gallo and sweet chili sauce, they provided the perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and heat! Additionally, the customer service was superb! I will definitely be back.
I would have shared pics but the food didn't stand a chance of being photoed. As soon as we got the take out in our car, the aroma was intoxicating. My son had a chicken burrito, and I had pastor tacos. They were absolutely delicious. Fresh ingredients and wonderful seasoning. Very friendly staff. We will be back, again, and again, and again.
I just ordered doordash from here after reading some of the reviews online and I have to tell you--the hype that people have shared doesn't even come close. The food absolutely blew me away! I couldn't eat it fast enough yet I wanted to savor every bite. I got a chicken taco, chorizo taco, guacamole and chips, and some pupusas! The servings were generous with all ingredients. I can't wait to come back. :) The pupusas aren't pictured because I'm saving them for dinner and I know looking at them too long would make me immediately want to eat them. COME HERE!
Y’all. I usually can’t be bothered to leave reviews, but this place is worth it. Family owned (wonderfully kind people), no frills, clean, and good good food. Having lived in LA and NYC, I can’t stand mediocre Mexican. This place rocks, and I’m looking forward to frequenting it more in the future. It’s a great mix of traditional and inventive menu items. The selection is limited, and trust me - that’s a really good thing. They know what they do well! I had two chorizo tacos and one fish taco plus the red and green sauces for $11, which was a fair price for some very stuffed tacos. Everything was awesome and the red sauce has a nice kick to it. I encourage you to try this place if you’re checking it out, especially during these crazy times where local businesses need us more than ever!
Discovered this place not long ago, and we LOVE the tacos. Busy nights/times mean a longer wait for your order, and the online ordering doesn't show you the reduced price for 3 tacos instead of just one. Call in ordering is still a work in progress. We think this will all get worked out in time, and does not detract from the fresh delicious food. Definitely delicious and unique food, friendly staff. There are a couple outdoor picnic tables if you order to eat on site. No fountain drinks, all bottled or canned drinks, including water. We love the veggie options, but our favorites so far are the chicken and the steak. We'll be back to try them all eventually!
Great tacos, but the guac was too salty. Would definitely recommend for a quick bite
Seems to be a popular place. I found the chicken burrito bland. Chicken crumbles instead of shredded chicken. I can see the potential if you order the right thing.
Their tacos are great. Only giving 4 stars since the "your order is ready" notification was at least 10 minutes ahead of my order actually being ready. Good food takes time, and they make great food here. I just prefer when "your order is ready" means it's actually ready.
Take out has been going smoothly, if I order in person, they quickly prepare the food and I'm out the door. If I call it in, I've never had to wait past their estimated times. Interior is a bit Spartan, but given the times that's fairly forgivable. The nachos are hearty and the burritos are filling. If you're looking for tacos try the delicious bulgogi ones.
This is a Mexican Family run restaurant that does all of the basics well with huge portions. The Chicken Big Burrito was HUGE and enough for 2 meals. It also came with a few chips, Pico de Gallo and some so so cheese sauce in a separate container that is best left there. We also got the Chicken Quesadillas that was enough for two meals. The meal was prepared fast so it was hot when I got home. Very tasty overall but a few things seemed to be missing. More chips, some sour cream, hot sauce and maybe some guacamole all on the side would have made this a home run. That being said we had what we needed at home except for the extra chips. A solid 4 out of 5 overall. They also have a food truck to watch out for.
We had the taco truck come out to our office at work for Taco Tuesday. Overall the food all looked very good. They did surprisingly well with the overload of employees that flooded out to get tacos. A line of 50 people all showing up in quick succession with many more walking over still. I got the chorizo tacos and they were great with a little green salsa. They were a little salty for my taste but still very good.
Food is awesome no doubt. But it's a horrible experience if you order through any platform. They don't seem to actually receive/care about the order until you show up at the counter. What's worse, the staff will then be genuinely confused with the platforms when you try to show your order to them. It's the same regardless of the specific platform (I tried at least two). What's the point then? If you can't do it right, just don't partner with the platforms that make you confuse yourselves. tl;dr Just go and order at the counter. Placing the order upfront through anything isn't worth the hassle.
Decent taco shop with well prepared homemade fillings for tacos, tortas and pupusas. Pupusas delicious but a bit gooey and sloppy.
Paid $14 for three small tacos at a food truck so was hoping for a bit better. Got Adobo, Bulgogi, and Chorizo; chicken used in Adobo and Bulgogi was dry and needed more seasoning. Chorizo was good. Tortillas were cold, not even heated up on the griddle. Very disappointing.
Got take out from the restaurant. Unfortunately very overpriced for what was received. Otherwise would have given 4 stars for food.
This is a review based on lunch at the restaurant on Highway 70. I’d like to say something more complimentary but while the food is ok, the prices are significantly out of line with comparable restaurants within a mile or two. $15 for three tacos.
I had high hopes but was not impressed. I had the fish, bulgogi, and steak tacos. While the fish taco was delicious the other two were lacking flavor. One had pickled cucumbers that just tasted like cucumber and the other had kimchi and daikon that was bland and lacking any tanginess. I might try it again for the pupusas since they looked good but there are far better tacos in Durham.
My visit here was a little mixed. Positively, the tacos were great. I had the Bulgogi tacos. Negatively, $48 for 2 lunches with soda and nachos... No (free water) and no refills, left me with a negative impression Probably will not return even though I enjoyed the food. I personally feel that the value for the portion size is poor.
No masks on any staff even though sign on door says it’s required and Durham requires it. Food was $10.50 more than online indicated so I felt deceived.
The food here was actually pretty good. But they lost 3 find me because of the spoiled sour cream. They had it in little containers out in a tray instead of refrigerated. Big mistake that could possibly get someone sick. No bueno
12:15 pm on a Friday I arrive for lunch. Neon signs are turned ON and says OPEN. Google says the store should be open. Doors locked. I don't have a lot of spare time for lunch so I probably will never try this place again.
Decided to try for lunch on seamless and the great reviews definitely led me astray. The chicken taco was dry and everything from the burrito I got to the sauces were extremely bland. Based on my food I wouldn’t say it was worth the price or the 4.5 rating. I’ll have to take the other half home to add to it so my money isn’t wasted.
Very disappointing, my chicken tacos were cold and did not taste very good, the chips were overcooked, guacamole was bad, it was a group of four of us to give this food truck a try no one enjoyed their food.
Placed an order online and arrived on time to find the restaurant and truck were closed on 12/30. Was notified 5 minutes after arrival and refunded. Showed as open online.
Garbage and they lie! Ordered twice via GrubHub and each time after waiting 40 minutes to an hour, the orders were canceled with no reason. Today after I ordered I waited 30-40 minutes and called and asked if my order was going to be delivered and the person who answered said "oh yeah, they already picked it up". I literally ended the call and a minute later received the cancelation from Grubb. STAY AWAY, you've been warned.
Received the wrong food. Drove all the way back to see what could be done. The doors were locked and wouldn't come to the door. Held up the bag of food, but they just turned out the lights. Won't be returning.
Tacos are fine. Food is unbelievably slow and they underestimate the wait time.
If you like velveeta labeled queso, this is the place for you. Every ingredient comes from a can and it tasted exactly as you'd expect it would..
Staff was just hanging out when we went to pick up our food and had not "accepted" our order on their side. After waiting 50 min order was still incorrect and missing several items.
Called in an order but they didn’t prepare it. Then when I arrived they got the order wrong. I asked for traditional tacos and they put some white sauce on top that I swear was out of a salad dressing bottle. Worst tacos I’ve ever had. We couldn’t even eat it. I wouldn’t care normally but for $5 a taco they can do better. I used to go here more often but it’s definitely not what it used to be.
To start, this review is about the concession in the Durham Bulls ballpark. The teenager working the register needs a few lessons in customer service and manners. I asked for extra cheese for my nachos. I was told “we cannot do that”. I said you really cannot charge me for extra cheese for my nachos. With a snappy attitude she said they could, but it would be $2. I said that was fine. Then she snaps back again and says that I have to pay the $2 in cash because there is no way to ring it up in the register. I will say the food is okay but pricey at $45 for a nachos, 3 tacos and 2 sodas with an attitude. The best thing is there are no shortages of other food options in the park. I will not be returning to El Jefecito!
Unfortunately we were overcharged and we did not receive all of our order. I was the only customer when I walked in and was told it would take 10 minutes. It took 30 minutes. In addition we ordered one pupusa and three tacos with a side of chips and pico de gallo. We were given no chips and were charged for three pupusas. We will not be returning even when we return to the brewery next door.
This place should call itself diarrhea taco. We (me and my husband) eat here pretty regularly due to the convenience that it’s close to where we live. It’s pretty hit or miss. This afternoon was a total miss; I picked up some items from here on my way home from work. My husband ended up vomiting after tasting the verde salsa that had gone bad. Probably won’t be paying for this convenience any more .
