Tried rump steak instead of my usual fillet or ribeye; unfortunately, it was too chewy. The mushroom side was so delicious, but the slaw was bland and dry, needing more sauce or mayo. On a positive note, Chop House craft lager impressed me, despite not being a beer person. Friendly and helpful staff. I'd return to explore their other dishes.
Been to the chop house many times. The food is spectacular. Always the best produce. My husband loves the steaks and I love the mushroom gnocchi. The portions are huge! Service staff are lovely and helpful. Its beautifully decorated and such and unusual space dining in the mezzanine of an old railway arch. Prices are pretty standard, but the food really feels a notch above what you what get in an average restaurant of this price range.
Absolutely amazing meal had here. Myself and my partner were celebrating our anniversary and upon mentioning this as the reason for our visit, the lovely staff member (sorry I forget her name!) brought out two glasses of prosecco for us on the house. A really nice touch! Onto the food, simply delicious. We had the Chateaubriand (medium which was perfect even though I normally order medium/rare) with thick cut chips, broccolini, mash potato and Mac & cheese sides. All washed down with a bottle of lovely Malbec. Sublime! 10/10 for everything guys, we absolutely loved it 👍🏼
Food wad amazing. Service was good, very friendly and attentive girls looking after us. One thing as an American upstairs was kinda hot, I know we're spoiled with central a/c and all that. Wasn't too hot to enjoy but slightly uncomfortable. Dress light for us yanks.
Modern interiors set within the converted arches next to Edinburgh Waverley station (car park/Market Street side) A contemporary bar downstairs with a sleek restaurant upstairs. We were walk-ins on a friday night but they found us a table within 15 minutes. Super friendly waitresses (Ayesha served us and was brilliant!) Sharing Steak was beautifully presented but a bit under seasoned, which was easily remedied with salt and pepper. MIL loved her burger. Sticky toffee apple cake was the winning dessert. Friendly swift attentive service and a vibrant atmosphere. Perfect arrival meal into Edinburgh
Great location, I remember the arches being derelict for decades, so this is a fantastic use of the space ❗❗ Love the look, which is not refined but it is cool and makes me want to relax and soak up the atmosphere, today it was funk and soul music Friendly and competent staff, great 👍🏻5⭐ Drinks ....big choice and plenty cocktails Now to the meat on the bones, the food; first class, well cooked, presented, hot, fresh, obviously good quality. One of the best burgers I have had, the steak was first class, macaroni side was also great We look forward to returning soon and recommending. Note: very fairly priced, so a solid 5⭐🐮🐂
OK so give me a break on the atmosphere. We were the first table in on a Sunday afternoon. The staff are super friendly and helpful, and I am betting it is a fun bustling place on a Friday evening. The food is stunning, the chicken was succulent with a crispy skin! The margarita was spicy and the fries are a revelation. The starters were top notch too. Go search this place out and don't miss out!
Firstly, atmosphere. The arch literally melts away with a unique hanging couch design i haven't seen anywhere in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Scotland, the tables are notably well placed although it may seem a little far to reach for some it lends to good posture and comfort. And before I talk about the food, let's address the amazing service, i often struggle with the Scottish service sector, few can deny that some scots just shouldn't. But this is something else, not overly attentive, but accommodating and delightful, will chat and follow up but don't push it or disturb. Knowledgeable and down to earth, extremely polite and just good staff. And one more thing... There's a icebox filled with crustations at the bar. Well played. Now food I ordered a rib eye (medium well, i don't like blood) and the famous Mac and cheese, and everyone else got the sirloin. (Imaginative aren't they) To start i got tempura prawns and mosteralla. The cheese was well olive oiled, peppered and presented. It was also really good fresh mozzarella which is the main thing here, the peppers were also really good and crunchy. The prawns came with puree tomatoes that weren't great, over seasoned and a bit dried. However the prawns themselves were a multifaceted experience of batter and "squish" that you only get in premium seafood, 5 stars for a starter, no head but that's a UK thing. Steaaaaks The ribeye was amazing, without sauce perfect, and with peppercorn, the best steak in the east coast besides Hawksmoor, for half the price. Enough said. The Mac and cheese was HOT but creamy And all those little burnt bits were delicious. The sirloin was delicious and well charred and salted. Overall amazing atmosphere, menu and staff. Also the business cards are chamfered, 5 stars for design. (If you can't tell i came with Napier students)
Chop House specialises in Steak, specifically their Porterhouse and Chateaubriand, other classic brasserie dishes available including Rotisserie Chicken and Steak Burger, but plenty of other options and sides. Great wine list and Cocktail List. All served my experienced Chefs, Waiting staff and Bartenders, friendly, polite and Knowledgeable. One of three venues in Edinburgh this one is small but beautiful, located in the famous Edinburgh arches it houses two floors the first set on a mezzanine. Good toilet facilities. All in all a great experience, pricing reasonable, you can spend a little or alot depending on your tastes. Highly recommended.
Highly recommend for a great late afternoon lunch. We got the Flat Iron Steak, medium (but looked like rare, lots of flavor without tasting salty). Came with its own miniature pot of yummy pepper sauce. Also came with string french fries (crispiest fries we’ve ever had. So light). We ordered a side of mushrooms (mixed uncommon varieties. We ordered the butter sauce with no garlic. Scrumptious!) and a side Ceasar salad (generous grated cheese, crispy croutons, disappointing dressing. We’ll opt for another veggie next time). We split the meal and both were very satisfied. £35 included a 16oz lager and a lemonade. Can’t do better than that! Ate outside on patio people watching and petting every dog that passed. We’ll be back.
It’s not cheap, but it’s good. You order steaks by the ounce (or whatever metric unit they use), so if you are from the states that’s something that might throw you off at first. But the staff are great about helping explain it. The steak we had was excellent and juicy. The sides were on point as well.
Probably best steak house in Edinburgh. When your main selling point is cooking steak then you need to be good. And Chop House Market Street were. Good quality cut of meat cooked as medium rare. Flavourable while remaining juicy. Just the right side of tender making it pleasurable to eat. Add in a good range of sides (truffle chips a favourite) add to the steak well. Staff friendly with quick service.
We ate here last time we visited Edinburgh and it was so good we came again during our second visit. My wife loves a good steak and they make a cracking one! I had the Monkfish pictured and it's was so good I actually ordered a second! You could argue there's not enough in one portion but I'd say it's just that damn tasty! Great service and they have kids menus available too
We came to celebrate our anniversary with my partner and we were not disappointed. The staff gave us a free glass of prosecco while we waited for our table to be ready. The food was really good and the staff were very polite. Recommend the sirloin with macncheese as well as the potatoes. Desert was decent. Service charge is not included
My family’s 1st time in Edinburgh and I decided to try the Scottish beef. We had a 1kg tomahawk, 2 fillet, oysters, some sides like in the picture for 3 aldults and 2 ten-year-old kids. - Staff was really nice and she explained well about the Scottish dried beef used as we were there for the 1st time. - About the steak: i chose medium well as we had kids and we waited for 45’ which the staff already told us about that. She also suggested us the 1kg tomahawk was enough for just 2-3 people but I didn’t believe at first as we had kids and asian stomach 🤣 I soon regretted that I should double the meat bcoz it was too good, soft and juicy, we could eat much more but couldn’t wait for more 45’. - Sides: Portion is big compared to the price. I love rocket salad and potato was yummy.
Chilled out industrial decor. Staff were great and friendly. Came in without a booking before dinner service. Staff were happy to accommodate us. Steaks were great and cooked to our liking... blue/rare. Sides we picked were also great. Chillie burnt greens.... garlic wild mushrooms and truffle chips.. the later could've done with with truffle oil. We picked peppercorn sauce and the bone marrow gravy. Peppercorn was great. Bone marrow gravy in the other hand... could've been reduced more and lacked bone marrow flavour. Had the muscles with garlic butter sauce for starters. Went down very well. Could've ordered the bigger size but wanted space for steaks.
Amazing hospitality, the chief was surprised by our request that no alcohol in our meal and he manged to whip an excellent replacement with big talent. Greatfull for best meal.
On 3rd August 2023, I visited there to have lunch. I ordered Fillet Steak and Mussels. All were very good! Staffs were very nice. Very comfortable shop! Looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you!
Absolutely incredible! From the atmosphere to the service and drink list, Chop House ticks all the boxes. The lobster was one of the best I've ever had, and the rest of my family loved their steaks. The wait staff made sure we had everything we could want and went above and beyond. Highly recommend this restaurant for a delicious night out in Edinburgh!
Oh chop house. What a fantastic restaurant you are. My wife and I had dinner here as our last date in Edinburgh before leaving back home, and it was worth every pound. From the wine to the steak, everything was served to perfection. Even though it is somewhat pricey, the price makes up for the absolute beast of a meal we got. I didn't even want to brush my teeth before going to bed that evening, just to savour the taste. The atmosphere is pretty good, and we were served great drinks at the bar before being showed our table. There were no cats though.
For us this place was pricey but my goodness was it worth every penny! We were so tempted to lower all our star ratings, just so this could be 5! Every element of every dish was packed with flavour and cooked to true perfection - even the bread and butter was to die for. While the steak is their signature dish and was of course delicious and juicy, we saw other dishes being delivered to other tables that looked just as mouth watering. Olivia our waitress was fantastic, happy, helpful and service was incredibly fast without being rushed. The décor was an impressive industrial design that was cosy and comfortable despite all the hard metal lines. The lighting made the walls look like they could have been made from gold! Overall we can't recommend this place highly enough and if your looking for a seriously high quality establishment without any pomp and pageantry, this should be the place!
A great place close to Waverley Station. We had fab cocktails, I recommend the Bloody Mary- spiced and delicious. I had mussels and the other half enjoyed a perfectly cooked rib eye steak with a decent Merlot. Service was excellent and friendly. Top notch and good value for Edinburgh. 10/10
Absolutely fab place to eat on our first night in Edinburgh. Exceptional bar staff who (easily) sold us signature cocktails, which were delicious! The scotch egg was the best I've ever had, and the steaks were cooked to perfection. Would visit again and recommend to anyone!
Great atmoshphere on Saturday evening. Staff all very friendly and attentive. Food was really tasty. Ribs were super tender. Fillet steak cooked perfectly and was delicious. Really nice evening with friends.
Fantastic! I had my birthday meal here recently the raised seeing is a cool novelty and the view is amazing if you are at the very front. You might have to look for it but they have their name on the ice cubes too. Some of the best staff I've ever come across they were so friendly, almost made me forget the steak was perfect. If you can go, go. Do it now.
I had the pleasure of enjoying the Sunday roast at Chop House, and it was absolutely fantastic! The roast was cooked to perfection, with tender meat, crispy potatoes, and all the delicious sides you’d want. The flavors were rich, and the portions were generous – truly a meal to remember! What really made the experience stand out, though, was the service. Cara was exceptional! She was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. Her recommendations were spot-on, and her warm personality added to the overall experience.
We had a lovely meal at The Chop House, the spare ribs were great as were the (huge) onion rings, steak and chicken. The chimichurri sauce was exceptional! 4/5 stars due to the salty fries which reminded me of salt and vinegar crisps. The lager in frozen pint glass washed it down well.
I visited Chop House on a Sunday and chose the rump roast, which includes an appetizer or dessert. I ordered the mussels, which were my favorite part of the meal! The roast was good as well, but 3/5 stars for me as the meat and potatoes needed some more seasoning. The vegetables were seasoned well. Service was great!
Out with my steak buddy to try out chop house steaks. Loved their tiger prawn starter. The relish with it was really tasty and slightly sweet. We had a rump steak each. Mine was medium so it was pink but not bloody. Very tasty. The temperature of the steak was only warm and should of been hot but there was only one waiter/barman at the time so we let that slide. The straw fries with light and a really nice different variation of fries. Good service and would definitely recommend trying here.
We were craving for some good meat after the hike at Arthur’s Seat. Ordered sourdough steak, and fillet steak and a Mac cheese for the LO. The food was good overall. Good meat and the seasoning was good. However I felt the sourdough steak might be a little bit over cooked so the edge of the meat was a bit dry. The fries were the most amazing discovery as I ve never seen such fine cut of fried!
This was a wonderful place. Service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The meal was fantastic. I had the sirloin and half a lobster. Just delicious. My only observation was the beer selection was very very limited. And by that I mean 2. And neither was that great. Otherwise a good expierence.
My family and I ate here after arriving in Edinburgh. It was quite nice, I had the sunday roast. It was a 35-day dry aged steak and other stuff on the side for 21£. The steak was pretty good for only 21 pounds, although I would have loved to have more potatoes and less of the green stuff. My family also thought the food was good. The homemade Lemonade was great as well.
Came here for food after reading loads of 5 star reviews but was left bitterly disappointed. We both ordered fillet steak- one medium-rare and one medium-well. We had a very long wait for food (and drinks). When our steaks came, they were both significantly overcooked. The medium-rare was medium-well and the medium-well was past well-done. The picture below shows the "medium-rare". This was mentioned to the waitress who completely ignored it and then forgot to bring our 2nd drinks.
Not a bad place with good, decent steaks, cocktails, and sides. The atmosphere is really cool, especially with the hanging sofas on the ground floor and a nice view of the Governor’s House and Calton Hill from the first floor. However, my last experience here was quite disappointing. We were seated at a table near what I assume was the kitchen upstairs, and staff kept carrying bags of waste past us. The smell and sight weren’t exactly appetizing. On top of that, service was extremely slow - we waited a long time just to have our order taken, and it felt like we were forgotten, even though the restaurant wasn’t crowded (only about three tables were occupied). Plus, the music was too loud, making it really hard to communicate. I might give this place another try because the food was decent, and I’d still recommend it for that. But I really hope they remove that table.
Staff were very very nice. Ambiance was awesome. Very interesting decor. I would give a borderline 4 star and I would come back to try it again. The view from my booth was cool. Music selection was cool. However, the ribeye was decent but at that price the expectation is for a larger sized meat. The bearnaise sauce was decent. The mashed potatoes were fine. I received a different side then ordered and the mushrooms in some type of sauce were okay (I am not a fan of mushrooms and wished the heirloom tomatoes had been provided). But it was nice to try something different. The Sauvignon blanc was good. The steaks didn’t melt in the mouth except a few pieces. I would say try it but maybe a different entree would be a better selection. I am traveling and maybe my experiences are way out of line for the type of meals in Edinburgh. I am in no way trashing the place. Give it a try and hope you enjoy it. By the way, if the staff weren’t so friendly I would not recommend it.
Staff were lovely, atmosphere was fine. Only place not decorated for the holidays which was a bit disappointing. Ordered the chateaubriand, we had waited about 40 mins for this (no starters) and it was so chewy and completely well done at the end when we had asked for medium. We are big steak people, chose this for a big celebration after getting married and was so disappointed. The sides and lobster were lovely but the steak was one of the worst we’ve had. It came highly recommended so maybe got them on a bad night. £96 for the steak so would expect a higher standard, If we weren’t starving we would’ve sent it back.
It’s a strange restaurant - nothing especially wrong but, equally, nothing especially good. The bottles of water we ordered arrived at room temperature, the “string” fries that came with the lobster were cold and greasy, there was no salt or pepper on the table, and the house lager tasted watery. Service was friendly but maybe understaffed. Overall, for a bill of £330 for 4 people, is was a little disappointing.
This place has really gone down hill. Service though friendly was unattentive. Ribs to start were burnt, returned to come back stone cold. Medium rare sirloin came part medium, part well. Missing sides, other sides were pretty grim (chilli potatoes were swimming in grease and had no chilli, slaw had zero dressing and mash tasted like water). To top it all a rowdy group of about 12 blokes came in and disrupted all the diners meal and staff vanished and let them behave appallingly. For over £150 very disappointing, they disounted sides and starters plus 10% but honestly felt like we'd been mugged.
We dined here tonight for my boyfriend's birthday meal. It was ok at best. Felt a bit conned from the ourset at being asked if we wanted water, to be given a bottle of still water to be paid for while the tables next to us were given tap water. We opted not to gave starters for that reason, trying to rip off customers by sneaky tactics doesn't make for a large appetite. My partner had the steak and thoroughly enjoyed his meal which is the main thing. The burger I had was fine, not really comparable to other restaurants round the city. Service was polite enough however we were rushed off our table after we decided we didn't want desserts - never even got the chance to finish my expensive water! We won't be back. While the steak was good, we can get better, honest service elsewhere with steak just as good.
The cut of meat was good, but not seasoned at all. The chips were old, or at least tasted like they were old pan chips. The lobster were was so over cooked it was like rubber. The service was good. The food had absolutely no taste so would will not be returning.
The design of the restaurant is cool but not very practical. The downstairs scaffolding booths shake a lot especially if the table behind you are on a date and the nervous guy has a shaky leg. Second they burnt our steak. This has never happened to me before so I found it very funny. The staff were nice and came out to tell us while offering free bread. Funny enough the complementary bread was also burnt. Final when our steak arrived and to our disappointment it was tiny. We spend £200 for the 900g steak between 4 people (initial we ordered the 950g but it got burnt). The majority of the weight was in the bone. Honestly each of us could have finished the 900g steak individually. Thankfully we ordered potato aswell which were nice and resolved our hunger. The other sides were not as successful, the broccoli was really bad and the sauce was a joke. Main take away from my review is: Do not order a 900g steak for 4 people.
This is my first review of a restaurant, but I'm incredibly angry about everything I experienced during my visit, especially the lack of sympathy from the staff and the long wait times. If you see your guests dissatisfied because they're waiting too long, at least smile and apologize. That's basic customer service, not just throwing their plate on the table and walking away. My wife was shocked. We wanted to stay longer, but there was no point. It's a Thursday evening, and there aren't many guests, so at least take care of those who are...
We went there hoping to enjoy a nice steak. The waitress recommended the “extra dry” option at 350grams per person, but it was just okay and definitely overpriced. We ended up paying £120 just for the steak, which was tough and chewy( total bill with service charge was 195£ )The mushroom side lacked salt, and overall, the restaurant could use more attention to cleanliness.
Very disappointed. Came here 5 years ago and we had a great experience. It felt unique ar the time, the food was exquisite. This time around, heavy chain vibe, drinks took for ever, the steak barely saved them. Top tip, if its a quiet night and you have people in, get the cocktails to them ASAP, the more they drink the more they'll eat, the more they'll drink the more they'll tip. Simple cycle.
Honestly not great. Steak under and over requested cook level, Rump full of unrendered fat. Rump, sirloin and chateaubriand amazingly have no flavour. Not a hint of beef flavour. Sauces gravy, peppercorn and chimichurri also have no flavour. Amazing how everything had no flavour. Disappointing
Went to Chop House for a special occasion, our first time going. Food was absolutely fine, drinks were lovely. Unfortunately the service was shocking. We went at 1:30pm, it was quiet when we arrived but was obviously busy within about an hour. There were only 2 staff working and unfortunately we sat with finished plates for a good 10 minutes, asked for the bill and didn’t receive it. We then asked a second time for the bill, when it was dropped off, we were advised that the staff member had to do something else then would come back to take our payment. At least 10 minutes later, we still hadn’t paid. A third staff member showed up for their shift and all 3 of these staff were chatting at the bar while we waited to pay. We had to go up to the bar to settle the bill. Incredibly disappointing. We waited 30 mins from the time we finished eating to pay the bill. Unacceptable.
Very disappointing experience... We visited Chop House in Edinburgh expecting a relaxed evening, however from the moment we sat down it was clear something wasn’t right. The restaurant wasn’t full, yet the service was painfully slow. We had to wait far too long for everything – to order, for drinks, and simply to get anyone’s attention. It genuinely felt as though no one was managing the floor. What made it worse was the cleanliness. The booth we were shown to was sticky with visible food residue on the seating, and the table was clearly not properly wiped down. It’s very hard to enjoy a meal when you feel uncomfortable touching the furniture around you. Basic hygiene should never be optional. The food itself was actually quite decent, which makes the whole experience even more frustrating, but good food cannot compensate for poor service and an unclean environment. Overall, the lack of attention to guests and the general feeling of neglect completely ruined what should have been an enjoyable evening. Not somewhere we’d hurry back to :(...
