Really good and flavorful bbq. The sausage & brisket is good so is the potato salad, watch out for the beans though, they are good but they add a lot and i mean a lot of black pepper to them.

Was visiting from Chicago, where the barbecue selection is pretty weak. But the City Meat Market was really good, even on the 107F day we were there. It was delicious--but don't expect luxury or icy A/C.

Absolutely wonderful and Im very hard on BBQ. #nailedit

We were on our way back to LeagueCity from Thorndale yesterday around the lunch hour went in for a great taste of bar-b-que an wasn’t disappointed. It was great had the brisket an sausage . My dad use to come here all the time.🤙🏻

Solid and great staff. They really try and work hard for their customers. I loved the chicken and sausage. I recommend for a quick road stop between Houston and Austin. I will be back.

Simply the best BBQ joint I've been to. There absolutely no frills- the food is so good that nothing else matters. One of the things I miss since leaving TX.

D

Excellent little hole in the wall BBQ Place, jump in for a quick meal, excellent smoke flavor. Open early 7:30 a.m. selection depends on availability, and time of day. I stop every chance I can get.

C
Chris Lott

Brisket and ribs were on point. The sauce was a little thinner and sweeter than I normally like but I'd go back in a heart beat.

Hands down some of the best Bar B Q that I’ve ever had . If anyone asks about good Q City Meat Market is #1. Rip to the owner he was a nice guy.

A classic small town Texas barbecue experience. Meat cook perfectly and delicious beans and potato salad as well.

A
Asher Jones

The Brisket is not the best in Texas. Go to Snow’s for that however the Beef ribs are absolutely delicious. I’ve never had beef ribs this good. For that alone it’s worth 5 stars.

D
Danielle Gonzales

Great place for local BBQ. Service was friendly. Atmosphere nostalgic and inviting. Highly recommend the brisket and chicken here.

R
Reta Killingsworth

Not the place for vegetarians. This is an old school, butcher paper joint. No plates. But, hands down awesome BBQ served by local legends who learned at the feet of the legendary pit master. These folks KNOW barbecue.

A
Andy Draz

This place meets and exceeds all expectations. Best BBQ I have ever eaten. Do yourself a favor and stop in here!

We were driving through and my husband was looking for some authentic Texas BBQ! Well you didn't disappoint! Great food, had the chicken, brisket and potato salad! A must stop if in the area!

We have been driving through Giddings for a few months. We would see this place for once we stopped. We were rewarded with great bbq. Brisket, pork ribs, wonderful sausage. We really liked the bbq sauce also. We will have to be stopping here more often.

M

My wife had to hold me back from going back in and running back my order. Jesus that was good. Brisket and steaks were juicy and delicious.

J

Happened to be driving by on our way from Austin and saw this place and thought lets go check it out. The BBQ Gods were smiling on us that day! Some of the best ribs I have ever put in my mouth! The sausage and brisket were amazing as well, sauce? You don't need sauce on BBQ this good! My next trip to TX I will be headed here again!

s
shenitra simmons

I purchased brisket, sausage, and pork. The sausage reminded me of some of the best sausage I had ever eaten from my childhood. The brisket, and pork is exceptionally seasoned. I really don’t understand the few bad reviews for this establishment. I’ve had bad BBQ, and I guarantee you, this place ranks on the top of my list of some of the best bbq I’ve had in a while. The lady behind the counter was really nice. Definitely will be back!

N

I’m a trucker and I thought I had Texas bbq until I came here and they showed me the truth. Everything was so good and the lady upfront was really nice 👍 👍

We were driving from Houston to Austin sometime in 2015. We suddenly craved some good bbq and randomly found this place - it was literally by the highway. Since that day, I've been dreaming about their ribs at least once every month. It was the BEST BBQ RIBS I have EVER had IN MY LIFE!

M
Mike Schechter

One of the all time great BBQ joints. We were the last order of the day, so we got sausage and beef ribs because that's what was left. Absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked. Outstanding sauce and they don't drown the meat in it. It's all about the meat here, since you're eating on a picnic table in the back of a butcher shop. But you won't care after the first bite.

T
TX Bucksnort

Excellent food but it’s a hole in the wall. They make the best bbq.

A
Adam Ramirez

Saw this place on Texas Bucket List, and had to try, got a brisket sandwich, it was sliced, the brisket was very juicy not too smokey of a taste, the atmosphere is very nostalgic, lots of old pictures, very simple setup as for tables and chairs, not a fancy place, a very old building on the corner of Hwy 290 and Hwy 77, you enter through the side, but I came in through the 290 side, the food was excellent and the sweet tea was delicious, I would stop here again!

S
S Figueroa

The brisket, sausage and chicken were fantastic. The smoky odors drew us in. We were not disappointed. Everyone here is super friendly, including the regular customers who struck up conversation

T

Simply really good smoked meats. I have traveled past this location for over 10 years and while I knew about its high reputation I finally took the time to stop in. I ordered the brisket, ribs, and chicken. I cannot say which was my favorite, but I do have to say that the chicken was really spot on. As a cook myself I know its hard to smoke chicken without drying it out and they nailed it. The meat literally fell off the bone with every piece. *pro tip* if you want chicken it sells out fast so you may need to arrive early or call ahead to make sure it's available. They do use a little more black pepper than other places and it does provide a good balance with the smoke they give it. None of their meats are too salty. Overall, simple recipes that have been time honored and they work; so nothing needs to change.

R

Our usual stop when driving through Giddings. A little later in the day than we would have liked so of course ribs were the only thing left, no brisket or sausages but the ribs were moist and tender. Its been about a year since our last visit but nothing's changed. Its still Good. A bit pricey but good. Best ribs in Texas so make sure you stop. Don't let the "Hole In The Wall" decor fool ya. Order n Eat. Enjoy.

A
Andy Moore

There was no line here when I rocked up at 9 am on a Saturday, having driven a few miles from Lexington and an absurdly long line at Snow's. I ordered brisket, pork shoulder and sausage (ribs weren't ready yet), and they were worth the drive, especially the pork shoulder. And the sauce is dynamite!

D
Dave Peterson

This is a "gotta stop" BBQ joint if you are ever anwhere near Giddings. Great atmosphere as this is a real deal meat market. The brisket was moist and flavorful with deep smoke penetration. The pork rib was excellent. And I loved the serve-yourself pickles and onions right there on the counter. Totally worth it.

B
Big E

Meat pulled straight from the pit and slapped on a proper plate (brown butcher paper). Hands down the best BBQ sauce anywhere, ever! One of my favorites places for almost 40 years and the ordering line that weaves through the pit area hasn't changed yet.

S

This is Iconic style barbecue as you can get it. Go at lunch time because they sell out of various items through the day. The meat is best eaten at lunch . I am sure they haven't remodeled any part of the store in 30 or 40 years. You tell them what you want and they put it on paper and weigh it. They only have about three large tables to eat at so I would assume most of their volume is to go

p
phillips michael

Sold out of everything by the time I got there. Sausage was the only thing left . I'm going to assume that was because everything else was as good as the Sausage.. It's all about the timing.,.,.

M
Michael Naydan

My go to place on hiway 77 for bbq. I plan my trip to the coast by timing it to get there before noon. After that time pretty slim pickings- but better than nothing!

M

Giddings TX, City Meat Market has (hands down) some of the best smoked meats. My wife and I met my mom here to celebrate Mother's Day, exchange gifts. Amazing food, super-friendly staff, awesome atmosphere. My mom got brisket and chicken, my wife got ribs and I got brisket, sausage and pork. Plus each of us one side. Lots of food for roughly $83.00 dollars. I should've took a picture of it all, because it was a lot of food. See, honestly the best smoked meat you can get in Texas, will be at the small town places like City Meat Market in Giddings TX. I highly recommend eating there, especially if you love BBQ like me.

J

Chicken was absolutely savory, great temperature, needed no barbecue sauce. Brisket was ok, center of the brisket strip was a little bit on the dryer side, with the sauce it was great. Don’t get me wrong it still had a great taste just a bit dry on the center.

J

First time stopping in. Had the brisket and homemade sausage with potato salad. Everything was great. The brisket was tender & flavorful and the sausage was done to perfection. The atmosphere can’t be beat. This is the type of place that makes a great pit stop for lunch, you can just feel the history in the building and see it on the walls. The owners are very nice and knowledgeable. You have to try the sauce that they have on the tables that gets hotter the more you shake it!

Quant little historic butcher shop and bar b que establishment. Friendly service . Friendly and helpful employees. Fair prices on their good items. Brisket and chicken and homemade smoked sausage. We didn't eat any brisket. They were sold out. The app tells you open till 4 on Saturday. Nope because of it. We just about missed out on food. Store closes at 2pm. Didn't try the butcher shop. Got to talk with the owner. She's very approachable and friendly. She's following in her father's footsteps. Been around for over 100 years. The place never had been remodeled. Highly Recommended – Great Service & Quality BBQ Stopped by City Meat Market in Giddings, TX early in the morning (around 8:00 a.m.) because I needed something quick, filling, and high in protein before a long day of online gaming. Most BBQ places weren’t open yet, but City Meat Market was — and I’m glad they were. I called ahead to make sure they had what I was looking for, and the staff over the phone was respectful, knowledgeable, and helpful. When I arrived, the in-store staff was just as great. Everyone was extremely friendly and took the time to help me choose the right type and amount of meat so I wouldn’t overpay, which I really appreciated. Everything was already cooked and ready to go, making the whole experience quick and easy. The atmosphere has a cool old-time, classic meat market feel. The layout was a little confusing at first, but the staff guided me step-by-step all the way to the back where the food is ordered, so it wasn’t an issue at all. Payment was simple (cash or card), and checkout was smooth. There wasn’t much foot traffic at the time, but that’s understandable given how early it was — I’m probably one of the few people craving BBQ at 8 in the morning. Overall, excellent service, great food, and a welcoming experience. Very high rating from me, and I’ll definitely be back.

The pork shoulder was amazing. The service and ambiance were bare bones. I would have expected more for $18.00 a pound BBQ.

J

The brisket and pork ribs had a great smoky flavor, but were a bit over cooked. The staff was super friendly.

I went there for lunch. I went in the side door. You go to the back to get the BBQ. The far left door is the one to go into, to get in line. This is a very informal place. They have a very basic variety of food. I ordered 1/4 pound of BBQ beef and spicy beans. You get bread, BBQ sauce, onion and pickles if ask. It is served Aggie style -- on butcher paper. They are friendly people, so stop by for this unique old time Texas experience.

M

The brisket and ribs were great. We like the very informal dining area. The beans are a bit too spicy but the potato salad was good.

The workers are very friendly. The place was small and old lol. The brisket was good and tender. The sausage was a bit dry. Ribs was okay.

Classic small town Texas BBQ. Had a sausage and some pork shoulder. Sausage was light off flavor but good quality meat and smoke, definitely needs the BBQ sause (which was outstanding). The pork shoulder was their recommendation and that was a solid hit. If go back if passing through town but wouldn't drive too crazy far to make it happen.

C
Cam T

The BBQ was good. The service was excellent and prompt. The gal behind the counter will even smile when she relays the bad news that no, you cannot have a Styrofoam container for your leftovers.

D

My piece of brisket seemed a little over cooked, but still was good. Sausage was average.

J

Bottom line, it's a mom n pop type of place...a meat market with tables in the back where they're selling BBQ plates....wait, not plates!! They serve the meat on meat paper!! 👍🏽

J
Joe Bob

Great BBQ. Remember that this place is a meat market first and a restaurant second. I dig it, but it's not for everyone. Go pass the meat counter to the back of the store is the BBQ pit. It's just a small place for good food. Only a few folding chairs and tables to sit and eat.

A Texas BBQ legend—but maybe past its prime We stopped at City Meat Market in Giddings hoping for that iconic Central Texas barbecue experience. While the history and charm of this old-school spot still shine, the food didn’t quite live up to the legend on this visit. We ordered brisket, sausage, and ribs. The brisket was a bit on the dry side, and the sausage—while flavorful—was overly greasy. The ribs were the standout: tender, smoky, and packed with flavor. The potato salad leaned more toward mashed potatoes in texture, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. The real winner of the plate? The beans—hearty, seasoned just right, and full of comfort. Washed it all down with an ice-cold Dr Pepper, which helped bring the whole Texas experience full circle. Still worth a stop for the history and the small-town charm, but the food could use a little tuning up to match its legendary reputation.

This place is quite unique and as I understand it fairly famous around here. I'm visiting from Colorado and decided to stop by. . This kind of place isn't usually my cup of tea if I'm being completely honest. I'm not much of a meat eater other than chicken and fish. Luckily they do infact serve chicken (by the half I might add) and no not half a pound... half of a WHOLE chicken haha... Crazy. . Anyway I had the chicken half and my father had the brisket. He seemed to really enjoy his food and I did enjoy the chicken as well although I must say thay the potato salad was honestly the best part of the meal for me, it was delicious although unusually small in portion especially compared to what they offer for the stars of the show (the meats). . This place won't be for everyone given the extremely rundown, rustic vibes and featuring ridiculous portions. Its almost as if you just walked into a dusty antique shop where someone happens to be slinging meats in the back while the townsfolk flock to get as much meat in there stomachs as possible. . I like this place even though it's really not my style at all solely because of how unique it is... It maybe dirty, greasy, and unsightly to most people (especially those who live in the city or upscale areas) but it seems like a real hit in the community that it resides in and the very friendly people who work here obviously love what they do and whole-heartedly appreciate those who stop by to enjoy the unusual setting and abnormally large portions for the love of meat. I'd say give it a shot if you're looking for something very old-school... if not only for the food but for the quite unique experience.

Bottom line, it's a mom n pop type of place...a meat market with tables in the back where they're selling BBQ plates....wait, not plates!! They serve the meat on meat paper!! 👍🏽

Brisquit was spot on. Sausage they make their own was amazing my husband stated. Ribs were ok and had plenty of meat.

So disappointed, the brisket was too tough to eat. I have stopped in before and the brisket was tender. The sausage and potato salad was good.

Good old school style of BBQ. Sliced pork was amazing and sausage was pretty good as well. All other proteins were sold out so call ahead if you have your heart set on a certain type of meat.

I've passed by this place for decades and I've heard many stories of how wonderful the bbq is but had never stopped until yesterday. In fact, my trip to Giddings was focused on having lunch here......but I was disappointed. The smell was wonderful, walking through the door was like entering a time warp that took me back 40 years, the atmosphere was incredible but unfortunately the food fell short of even my slightest expectation. Except the pork ribs.....they were pretty good. Noteworthy in fact. I would recommend this to anyone for the experience at least. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day.....idk. Also, I found it to be pretty expensive. 2 ribs, 1 lb of brisket and 2 cans of Dr Pepper shouldn't be $56

City Meat Market is one of those places we've driven by countless times. I think only one of us had even been there previously. We had seen reports over the years that they can be hit or miss, so our expectations weren't very high. It turns out that might be a good frame of mind in which to start the day. We chose brisket, pork sparerib, and a sausage link. The owner, Gerald Birkelbach, added a few pieces of smoked pork butt to our order, asking us to give him our thoughts. The sparerib was peppery and salty, but in a pleasant way due to its difference from most spareribs we encounter. We decided it was likely due to being seasoned with table salt, given its more concentrated flavor than the kosher salt used by many BBQ joints. The sausage, predominantly beef blended with a little pork, was juicy and delicious. Brisket was smoky, but not in a particularly good way, and could have used some more time on the pit and a rest. The highlight here had to be the pork butt. Great pork flavor throughout and nicely seasoned. Gerald says he cuts his pork butts about an inch-and-a-half thick, adds his seasonings, and they get a smoke bath on his direct heat pits. This turned out to be a memorable experience, and I will definitely make the stop again if its early in the day, rather than just pass by on the way to Austin, wondering if I should.

A little disappointed this time. Last visit (last year) I would have given a 4 overall. This time the pork ribs were probably a 4, the brisket (which was brought out of a tub of hot water) was brown and anemic looking and dry - a "2" maybe, and the sausage was dry and bland. I gage my bbq experience by how much bbq sauce I use. I drenched these pieces of meat in it. Sorry, City Meat Market. I want to love you but I don't.

The BBQ was quite good. The brisket was pretty moist but a little fatty. The sausage was good but it's the type of sausage that falls apart and doesn't stay solid when you cut it. No beef ribs. ☹️ Also would have liked to have known how much the items were prior to ordering. They just had a sign but no prices.

My wife and I were headed out of town to go to LJ'S, and we were excited. When we pulled into the lot other cars were pulling out and leaving because it was closed for the holidays without posting it on their website or Google. Trying to salvage our trip we headed over to Giddings because the last time we tried City Meat Market they were out of food. We arrived very hungry and with high expectations. The building is very run down and in need of some TLC, but not wanting to judge a book by the cover we continued to the counter to order. We ordered brisket and sausage, our go-to for new places, and sides of potato salad and beans. We were warned that the beans were very spicy, but there weren't many other choices. We watched as the brisket was pulled out of a warming tray full of Au jus, and cut. I wasn't very impressed so far. We took our tray to one of the few tables in the "dining" room, still hoping for the best. The brisket tasted like Au jus, the sausage was dry and overcooked, and the beans were so spicy they were uneatable. As we were eating we watched as employees snacked on the food and wheeled carts of raw meat through the dining area. We left full, but not satisfied. Maybe they had a bad day, maybe their brisket and sausage is normally really good. I'll never know because I'm not planning on going back. Giddings is close enough to several other outstanding BBQ joints where your money will be better spent.

Really disappointed .. we drove 45 minutes to get here, got here at 3:59pm, was locked up and dark (closes at 4pm, we thought they were open later). We called at 4:01pm, and it became very obvious that the person there couldn't be bothered and didn't want our business. If you're open till 4pm, everything should still be displayed until 4pm, and the door locked at that time, then put away everything and turn lights out. This place obviously closes early, because the cases were all empty at 3:59pm. We would have spent a lot. Oh well.

Took my wife and son here , I had to wait for sausages to be available at 12:45pm on thursday. Got home and cook them and they tasted like rotten and spoiled meat.

Did not care for the brisket. No flavor and meat was tough.

Had the brisket and sausage with the potato salad and spicy pinto beans. Only thing that was halfway decent was potato salad that looks store bought

Asked for a # of moist brisket. He takes it out of a pot of liquid and slices it, definitely wet, but not what I consider moist. Ribs okay, but have a weird kerosene-y taste. Out of beans @ 1:30. One trip was enough.

I've had much better. The beans had way too much pepper, I added sugar, and that didn't even help. The sausage wasn't flavorful either. Not good experience.

Please go to Lockhart, Elgin, Bastrop or Manor. We drove from Austin to Giddings and this was so not worth the trip. Our meal was cold. The sausage was cold, hard and lacked flavor. The beans was full of pepper. Now the good. Brisket. Was good, tender, moist and seasoned well. The potatoe salad was homemade and delicious. The stall was very friendly.

The ribs were like eating jerky and 22 dollars for 3 ribs is criminal. Brisket was also very dry and very tough to eat hard to say but very bad bbq

Wife and I stopped by this place before going to a funeral to try there sausages...big mistake that was...not sure what is going on here but the sausage had a strange smell and taste to it...I only ate a couple of bites and tossed mine...my wife ate hers and ended up with a mild case of food poisoning with vomiting and diarrhea....that was our first and definitely last time visiting this place....buyer beware

Patronized this place for the first time and I will not be back. I purchased 10.00 worth of brisket and a large potato salad. The potato salad was good, but I was deceived with the brisket. I was given beef roast at brisket pricing.

Sad to see such a bbq landmark run into the dirt. Brisket is a fantastic substitute for chewing a rubber band, but it used to be phenomenal and melt in your hand. Pork is usually undercooked and sausage is so shriveled and over cooked it’s sad. I’m not sure if they lost their pit master or what, but someone very valuable apparently doesn’t work there anymore. Darn shame. Avoid like the plague.

First time stopping by and I was very disappointed brisket was very dry and so where the sausage ribs where a bit tough I’ve had better bbq then this would not not recommend waisting your money here and damn sure is expensive got 2 link 4 ribs 4 pieces brisket water coke $46

First of all I ordered brisket and the man took it out of a pan of water sitting on the grill couldn't chew it ribs was ok over all it was a bad experience will not be coming back and will tell everyone I know not to go there.

Terrible BBQ. Gives Texas a bad name. Pork ribs must have come from an old boar they found on side of road. Brisket was a disgrace. Sausage was dry and tasteless. Wasted $30. Threw most of it away. Would have taken it to my dog, but I like him too much to feed him that trash.

T
TheHoustongal

The toughest piece of brisket I’ve had in my life. We were at the end of what they had to sell, but I wasn’t impressed at all. The best thing I ate was the pickle and that should tell you what you need to know. If your going to eat in a run down hole in the wall the food better be top notch. So disappointed !

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this one a 2. The Brisket was chewy and very difficult to pull. The sausage smelled and tasted like it was freezer burned or was old and over refrigerated. The ribs were difficult to pull from the bone. It did not look like there was a pit master committed to the art of perfecting BBQ. If you are passing thru try a different BBQ restaurant in Giddings.

The worst BBQ ever. Only the flies liked it (and they were all over the cutting board). The brisket (stored in a pot of liquid; at least it keeps the flies off of it) was tough and tasted like old pot roast; the sausage like bad hamburger. Not sure how it stays open.

This place may have been great once, but the BBQ we had on Good Friday was some of the worst BBQ I have had in my life. The brisket was so dry they were soaking it in hot water. The sausage was dry with no smoke flavor. The ribs were ok. Also it is hard to believe the place passed a health inspection, as dirty and clutter the place is. I was really expecting good BBQ and drove from Houston, left really disappointed.

Paid $72 damn dollars for 5 links, 8 ribs & 6 slices of brisket.....link were dry as all hell & tasted weird, brisket was tender but lacked flavor; ribs tasted as if they were just seasoned with salt, pepper & grease...dogs wouldn't even eat it, could've saved & cooked my own, tasting a hell of a lot better...was my 1st & definitely will be my last time going.

Ive past through Giddings several times. I heard this is the best BBQ in Texas and we were highly disappointed, today. Sauage was dry and the brisket was super tough. The flavor was good. I got a pound each so we could just eat it on the road. Couldn't do that and had to throw it away. Sucks because I've heard good things about this place. Maybe it was just a bad day.
