Takeout food was very fast and delicious. I got the cheese enchilada plate and salsa with chips. The price was also good. Sweet tea is very good. The staff was constantly cleaning. I've been there several times and have enjoyed the meal and the staff is very friendly.
Had one of the best Tex-Mex meals I've ever had at Pepe's in Harlingen, TX. Simple but inviting decor. Once you're inside you'll be struck by how clean the restaurant is. My waiter was there just seconds after I was seated offering chips, salsa and beverages. The chips are lightly fried and served warm and crisp. The salsa has just the right touch of seasonings. On the waiter's recommendation I had the Fajitas Asadas. The skirt steak was seasoned nicely and grilled fajita style. It was tender and delicious. The churro beans and rice accompanied the skirt steak well. The flour tortillas were piping hot and tasted either homemade or procurred locally. They were delicious. The waiter was attentive and prompt without being intrusive. The Fajitas Asadas was his suggestion and I'm so glad I took his advice. I can't recommend Pepe's in Harlingen, TX highly enough.
By far the best Mexican food in Harlingen. Good atmosphere it's busy but it's still comfortable. The food is so flavorful and the service is very fast. My family eats here all the time.
The service here is impeccable. Friendly (half-) faces and speedy food delivery. Our glasses were never empty and the chips, made fresh, were spectacular. The salsa here is mild, which would be my main complaint. Food choices are fairly standard for American-Mexican food. The meats are cooked wonderfully. The sides are very standard, which makes them forgettable. I do highly recommend this place. Note for COVID worries: the tables are placed very far apart to help with social distancing.
Great local restaurant! Go early for lunch, it gets packed! But once you get in, it's worth the wait! I had the chile relleno, delicious! All the plates are great, staff is friendly.
Waiters are always attentive and food is always consistently good. I always get the same thing when I go and its continuously good. I always get the mexican plate because its never let me down and is very filling. I’ve brought many colleagues here and will continue to do so as long as nothing changes.
If I could give 10 stars I would. Between the food that is mouth watering and authentic... the staff is part of the experience. They are friendly and on the ball. This is my favorite restaurant hands down and one of my favorite things about Texas. Since moving here I cannot say enough good things about this place.... so nice to see a place that has not only great food but great service as well!!!!!
My family and I love the food at Pepe's. On this visit, I was interested in trying the mole sauce and asked for it on the side. When I explained to the waiter I was venturing out of my comfort zone, he offered to bring me a sample. He then brought two, one that was just the sauce and one that included cheese that would be on my enchiladas. Wow! What a great idea!! I discovered that I love their mole sauce AND that Pepe's customer service is phenomenal!!
Always love Pepe's! My favorite is the Jalapeno soup. On the appetizer menu, it is enough for a meal: chicken, rice, avocado and cheese with garnish of onion, jalapeno, cilantro. Chips and salsa are always fresh. The botana is also great. They do use Amercian cheese (I'd prefer cheddar or jack) but the fajita meat is tender and lean.
Fajitas were so tender. And I didn't think it was possible... But... I ate the crispy beef tacos the NEXT DAY. Yes, I sure did. And they were delicious . Corn tortillas were still crispy after heating up. INCREDIBLE...!! HOW CAN THAT BE..??? Well, this was surely a great discovery. I'll be heading to PEPE'S a lot more often.
Food is really good, our waiter was excellent in keeping up with refills. Enjoyed dining here, good family atmosphere.
Service was outstanding! Our waiter was attentive, fast and professional. Margarita tasted great and food was good. I had the Molé enchiladas, sweet flavor. If you are not use to those try something else, or try em.
*UPDATE* My parents went this weekend and reported everything was phenomenal. I got a text that all has been restored and everything is well in Pepe-land. We can all now live happily ever after! New cook alert. I have been going to Pepe's for years. I used to go when it was Antonio's too. I live in Corpus and every time I visit the valley, my family and I make it a point to come here. Their fajitas were immaculate! Super tender and a tiny bit crispy with unbelievable flavor. But for the very first time, the food was disgusting. The fajitas were chewy and not the signature style we came to love. They are more like boiled cheap taqueria style. The ribs were also off. It used to be tradition. Tragic actually. Anyhow, my mother asked and yes, they have a new cook. That shouldn't be an excuse. Recipes should go with the cook. They belong to the restaurant and they should learn the Pepe's method. Heartbroken. RIP Pepe's Mex Restaurant. :(
The botana is always great & the staff is very attentive. The chips are the best home made chips I've ever had. However the flour tortillas can be hard & the rice can be somewhat bland. Definitely still worth the visit.
Great little Mexican food joint. Waiter kept my tea glass full the entire time. Come early or be prepared to wait for a table.
Great food with fast friendly service! A+++++
Pepe’s catered for my mother celebration of life luncheon in Los Fresnos and they did an excellent job. Thank you , for your great service.
I've been coming here for a long time now and never was I disappointed. The food tastes good, all the wait staff are so friendly and helpful and many have been there for years. I don't know the owner, but that tells you a lot about him if the employees have stayed working at a place for so long. We hadn't been in a while, but Marcos, our waiter who's waited on us before noticed we hadn't gone in a while and still remembered what I usually order. The song "where everybody knows your name" came to mind right away. I could go on about how awesome the customer service is.
This place is where you need to eat when you want homemade Mexican food. Reminds me of what my mama and gma would make. Service is always great. There is rarely a wait because the table turnover is the best. I love the corn tortillas. Hot sauce of great .
I had never heard of Pepes until this past Easter weekend. I’m originally from Port Isabel now living in Houston with my family went down to visit my mother and took her to eat there not only was the service amazing But the food was absolutely to die for!! Everything coming out of that kitchen looked amazing and the plates were stacked!! The waiters were dressed the same and looked so professional. It was truly a delightful experience. We will definitely be visiting again in the future.
I have loved earing here for over 20 years. The food hasn't changed quality or taste. It is still AMAZING!!!
Authentic Mexican restaurant. I thought I'd had good Mexican food before but this is a truly excellent Mom and Pop restaurant. A local favorite if you will. The salsa was a soft pink color and I was concerned but tasting it made me decide that what ever you ordered here is going to be legit. I had a chili releno and a taco with beans and rice. I can't believe how wonderful it tasted. Yum!
If you're looking for affordable tasty tex-mex food, this is the place. I love the chips and salsa(not free) and the crunchy tacos and enchiladas Verdes have always been my favorite. The service has always been great!!
Authentic, delicious food. Relaxed atmosphere. Attentive servers, friendly people all around. Everything was great. Will be back. Highly recommend the flan. Served chilled with whipped cream 🤌
Tasty food and excellent service. I could've sworn they had my abuelita in the kitchen, cooking my favorite dishes! Highly recommend!
Staff always friendly. Great food. A bit small inside but has a good home feeling .
Not only is the food incredible, but the stories we shared with the owner were great. And then he comped all our food! Unbelievable.
100 times better than Los Asados. Pepe's are generous with their portions of Botanas. And juicy tasting fajitas.
The restaurant offers excellent fajitas, rice, and beans; we particularly enjoyed the "Fiesta for Two" and their margaritas on the rocks. The ambiance is quiet, comfortable, and ideal for a pleasant evening.
Waiters are exceptional. We have never gotten fantastic service any where else like Pepes Restaurant.
Very great food and super attentive service.
The first thing I noticed was the delicious smell surrounding this resturant. SO GOOD! I had the Enchiladas in Mole, rice & refried beans. I cleaned the whole plate. I received fast and friendly service & the have excellent prices. If you are in the area I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great service. Came during our lunch hour. They seated us really quickly, brought out our food and drinks. Our refills were so fast I wouldn't even notice them refilling them. Food price is very reasonable and there is a certain hustle you can feel within the serving staff. Would recommend to anyone looking for something well priced and delicious.
This place never lets you down, great service on top of great tasting fajitas Botana platter. Can't miss. Always packed, means it's good. Get there before the lunch rush.
Waiter was great never had to speak a word. He was on top of everything and did an excellent job and describing the plates . 10/10 experience.
Awesome service! Botana was very filling, fajitas are great. Salsa is maybe a little more blended than I would prefer, but the taste makes of the best restaurant salsas. Food came out quickly, and our waiter was very attentive and polite. I felt very taken care of. Botana for 2 is highly recommended.
Great little Mexican restaurant! The food was delicious and aesthetically pleasing. The service was outstanding, and the prices very reasonable for this area. Well done!
Everything delicious on my end but my co worker was a little disappointed with the order. They always get the same order and this time they said it different the chicken tasted different. Green chicken enchiladas (dont remember the name, sorry) but other than that Everything was what to expect at Pepes great staff, great food ( beef burritos cant go wrong with that) enjoyable atmosphere not to rowdy and loud. Overall a great place only bag thing its closed Sundays 😂 can't stuff my face with great Mexican food on Sundays . Highly recommended if visiting the RGV.
Excellent service feels like your are eating at a 5 Star restaurant. Waiters are excellent. Food is very good. Would definitely recommend to eat there
The food is great, the waiters and waitresses will over service you. Kind, polite always. Mr. Ayala the owner knows what he is doing.
This place may be the best Mexican food restaurant in Texas. Other places may do a thing or two better..but overall Pepe's is the best I've had. The service is second to none. If you are doing yourself a disservice not eating here. This is a contender for the best restaurant in Texas.
This is my first time coming here, decided to come because whenever I pass by it looks full in the parking lot, let’s start with the service, very fast and employees were so friendly and nice, refills were coming back to back which I loved, the man who attended us was very attentive. The food was delicious, everything was great, it gets packed, but it’s worth it!!! Will be back for sure !!
The papa was so delicious and fresh! The service was awesome I wish I asked for the waiters name to give him a shout out 😊 everyone was so respectful and they have the best chips and salsa for sure! The ONLY downfall was the Tea is lipton and lemonade wasn't like an Agua but all drinks free refills under $3 if your on a budget they got a variety of plates under $10 I love it here I just hardly go because it's always packed lol luckily when I went this past weekend it was kind of dead for the first time that ive seen but I love this spot family fave for sure ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The food was super delicious, and plates were well served. This is the first place i seen where they put plenty of meat on the botana and the fajita had a delicious flavor, The service was definitely the best around, and the waiter was very attentive and friendly. It's definitely my new place for fajitas!!
Everyone and everything is great at this place. Excellent Mexican food with awesome service. Staff is always attentive. Lunch rush gets busy but the staff is so professional that they got it down. Want less of a rush, come by between 3PM-5PM. Food is still awesome but less of a crowd. We always get the Fajita Nachos Supreme with lettuce. Best in Harlingen.
This food is great. I recently had the chicken plate and it was loaded. The restaurant has always been full everytime I've been there. It is a noisy venue when full and that's why I could only give a four star rating. The staff is polite and efficient.
We have eaten here twice, once was for lunch and the other time for the Tuesday buffet. The atmosphere and service are great, but the food is average. I was definitely not impressed with the buffet. There were only about 5 choices of things to eat--if I remember correctly it was enchiladas, tacos, rice, beans and just one or two other choices. Yes it is all you can eat, but there isn't much TO eat. I would recommend trying other places in town since there are so many to chose from, but Pepe's is a good fall back.
Good food in a nice family atmosphere. Don’t plan on a late dinner, as it closes at 8 on Fridays. We arrived around 6:50 and had to wait 20 min for a table of 2. Ordered the beef and chicken botanas for two. Basically a big plate of nachos with beef fajitas, chicken, fresh avocado, and fresh tomatoes on top. I noticed a couple of previous reviewers said the food was bland. It’s true that they don’t add much salt compared to Houston Tex-mex, BUT they do put a salt shaker on the table! Beef fajitas were tender and well seasoned, but not salty. Everything looks fresh - salsa, tomatoes, herbs, etc. Charro beans were good, but again, many would want to add salt. Frozen margaritas were good as well. This seemed to me to be more Mexican than Tex-mex; all male waiters with traditional clothing, greasy but fresh chips, no flashy deco like a Chuy’s or Pappasito’s. We’ll definitely visit again if we’re in town.
Food was good. Service was too. Some of the staff should smile when helping customers. If helping patrons isn't your cup of tea, then let's find another job. All in all, our waiter was very courteous N pleasant. We'll return for the food and Raul.
Great service....great food! The Botana platter had great chicken and steak fajita meat. Enough to feed 2 or 3 people. Good spicy salsa, but not so hot that it lost its flavor. Will be back.
Our favorite Mexican restaurant in Harlingen. Service is always fast and efficient. Never had a bad meal here. Sergio is our favorite server, he never fails to greet us and take care of us. The food is tasty and priced just right.
The food was good, but the portion was small for the price. The flavors are more modern and less authentic, in my opinion. I would try again
Visiting town from West Texas and selected this restaurant by chance and let me tell you it was a very good decision. The place is not extravagant but the food was amazing and it's rare to get excellent customers service my compliments to the cooks and waiters / waitresses plus the cashier. I would definitely eat here again and recommend you to eat here. Oh forgot the music is also awesome. Thank you for your pride in you work. ❤️
Really enjoyed the food at Pepes. Service was very professional, quick (Waiters literally whiz past), and serious. The hard floor lends itself to a bit noisier atmosphere than a nicer type restaurant for a quiet meal. Metal chairs clanging and tables being shuffled around kind of distracts from the white shirt wearing professional seeming wait staff, so ambiance is a mixed bag, but food is very good.
The restaurant is a little old and dated but very clean. I had the crispy tacos and they were very good. They had a nice crunch and good flavor. It came with a side of refried beans and rice. The service was super quick. I will be planning to go again soon.
Stopped on our way to La Feria but that's another story. I had the fajita taco dinner and my wife had the El Fiesta for one. We also had the chili con queso. The chips they served were way too oily for my taste. The flour tortillas were not the greatest. They got hard really quickly. Overall and ok experience.
Excellent meal, and service was good. Great price.
Rice was not well cooked it was a bit crunchy but otherwise the food is always delicious. I love their chile rellenos with only cheese 🧀
Better food at some other restaurants but a fee items are excellent but everyone has different taste. Some friends rate it 5 stars in all categories.
Service was excellent! Food was on par with expectations. Would suggest adding some filters to the water and ice machine, tasted a bit musty.
Great little TexMex in Harlingen. The dining area is open, and it's seat yourself. I've been eating here for Yrs and yrs. The servers have been here for decades and are mas South Texas Friendly. All in all, Pepe's is no frills Mexican food at a reasonable price. You must overlook the cashier. Ive never seen her in a good mood. Dont take it personal. Plotted Scouts screening forward.
I was very disappointed. We used to eat here all the time. The food was bland. No flavor. The salsa tasted like chopped up tomatoes with nothing else. The food used to be the bomb; it was a dud. The staff is still very nice and prompt. That's why I rated it higher than 1 star.
This place was recommended. Atmosphere was tasteless. The tables were too tall or the chairs were too short. Not comfortable at all. No appeal. Food was average. The service was excellent. Would I go back? No maybe take out next time.
The food was tasted good, flavorful with exception of the salsa. The salsa is nothing but tomato. A suggestion is they should notify customers that chip and salsa is extra $3. I found out at the register. Don't assume all customers know about the extra charge.
3•15•25 1st time here decided to come in and give it a try and see what they were hyped about. Look guys it's good but I wouldn't say the greatest the menu looks big but it isn't alot of repeatorial foods anyways ordered the Joe's house special comes with fajita, 1 cheese enchiladas, 1 taco rice beans and guacamole. Now fajita was thin and ok, the enchilada i don't wet think it has enchilada sauce it's just cheese so meh! It's too bland tortilla inside. Isn't even moist, just dried with the cheese, so technically, this is a lazy enchilada IYKYK.. tortillas, they are not even soft and get super hard. I had to tell them to bring fresh ones, but I guess they make a stack earlier, and whatever is left, they reheat and aren't freshly made. Rice and beans, as usual, everyone's go-to on plate rice was cooked well. The other plate we had was enmoladas that were there. Like I said, enchiladas don't have flavor as it should be, so yeah, they bland. They are pricey, but it's not a restaurant. I'd say it's a must to go. For the portion, it's there, but the quality isn't. That's why I scored it a ☆☆☆ staff is friendly yet took long to attend us when they sat us down. Do I recommend it well? It's your call, but as for me, nah, I won't.. just expected better from all the hype. As usual, a restaurant gets popular, and then, in the end, it slacks serve cheap with higher prices. I know inflation, but that's not an excuse.
My server Marco did an amazing job. Quick and professional. My glass never went empty and he was one step ahead on everything I needed. I ordered the carne asada plate. The asada was very flavorful and made for excellent tacos on their tasty flour tortillas. The Charo beans were ok, but better when I added salt. Rice was pretty standard. They do charge for chips and salsa, which is not an issue. But, for me the flavor wasn’t there. I would be happy if they were free (of course) but wouldn’t pay for them. Overall my experience was excellent but food was pretty average. I get the feeling that Pepe’s caters more towards the snow birds and those that may not want a lot of spice in their food.
I was fooled by all the cars parked outside during lunch time. Stopped to try it out. The Fajita plate was very disappointing. No flavor, cooked on the stove, the rice had no flavor and neither did the charro beans. The flour tortillas were more like store bought than hand made. Not worth the 14 bucks. The Fajita serving was also small for the price. At la parrillita for $10 you get way more fajita and actually grilled with flavor and the beans and rice way better. My wife had the Mexican plate. The cheese enchiladas were good and so was the Chille relleno. Again the rice and charro beans lacked flavor. I can't speak for the other plates on the menu but what we had, I was a bit disappointed.
Watch out NOW THEY HAVE HIDDEN FEES! They’re charging for things other restaurants don’t normally charge for on a normal plate like tortillas, beans & complementary chips etc.
I ordered the cheese enchilada plate with a sweet tea and I did not really enjoy any of it but the waiters were friendly and prompt. Like another person said those enchiladas are just cheese and tortilla, no sauce, so no flavor other than cheese. The "charro" beans I'm almost 100% sure are canned beans which I know some restaurants do but other restaurants always add spices, tomato, onion and cilatro to fake the flavor of authentic charro beans but this restaurant is just straight canned beans. The rice needed more flavor and the sweet tea is not brewed it's powdered tea from a can.
I got this place recommended, now I want to and slap them for sending me there. Not good at all
I wouldn't trust this restaurant. I paid with a credit card and my coworker left a cash tip. They added 18% tip the next day to my credit card WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION I will never eat or recommend this place
Do not recommend. Ugly Mexican food I ever had.I got the Chile relleno and lamprey egg around the chile was hard, rice and , beans were flavorless had no salt, and tortillas were hard and cold. My friend had Chuleton and the meat was hard, flavorless and her beer was served in a plastic mug. Salsa was horrible and super expensive. Bad experience.
