We ate here twice and the food and service were outstanding. Great variety, reasonable prices. It was packed on Super Bowl Sunday morning but the staff was able to keep everyone happy. We came again Monday morning and had the same unrushed experience. We’ll be back.
The chilaquiles are good. They have 2 different ones. Red and green salsa. The red salsa is the spicier than the green salsa. Can't go wrong with either one of them.
Their eggs and pancakes are amazing. We came around 11 on a Saturday and I expected it to be packed because Weekend, am I right? Wrong. I was shocked to see maybe 7 people total in the whole restaurant!! Our food came quick as heck and the server was really polite. We’ll be back! 5/5 overall.
Excellent. Everything was cooked perfectly. The hashbrowns were extra crispy and they even have grits. The server was wonderful, too. It was so good that we got into the car and talked about what day we could return for another visit.
Great diner food and the service is amazing! The classic building and design are cool and they play good oldies music. The staff is really friendly and they will not let your coffee cup get even close to empty. It's a pleasure to dine at Chips!
My husband and I visited the area for a staycation. Our hotel breakfast was really bad, and I decided it would be nice to try out this restaurant. We arrived when they just opened, so we pretty much had the restaurant to ourselves. Our waitress was a breath of fresh air and very attentive overall. I live the vintage feel to it. I orders the Casablanca “gringo” omelette with hash browns and a side of French toast. The omelette was okay, and everything else was delicious. Our experience there was so pleasant, we went there for breakfast again the next day before we left. This time I ordered the chicken friend steak with French toast, hash browns, and a side of sausage links. My husband ordered the same with regular toast, a strawberry shake, and onion rings. Our order arrived very quickly, and everything was absolutely delicious. I had the best nap in the car. 10 out of 10, I would definitely recommend.
The service was absolutely amazing. I don't think minimum wage does them justice because they deserve a raise. The food was really good and actually the first restaurant in years to get hash browns, correct unlike some places such as ihop or Dennys. Overall, I loved that old diner style atmosphere 👌
Such a great breakfast spot for anyone who enjoys taking a step back in time! This place screams 1950s, inside and out, and it's in a great location for anyone staying near LAX. Food is reasonably priced, and there's a Mexican breakfast section on the menu with lots of things I had never seen before. I loved our waitress, and as a fun bonus there was a crew from some production company there surveying the place to decide whether they were gonna use it in some big movies. We had so much fun and we really enjoyed our food. Definitely recommended!
Best raisin bread toast! Great enchiladas as well! Open late on weekends! This place hasn’t changed a bit!
This is a must go. The staff, food and atmosphere was great. The French toast tastes just like my grandma used to make it. My coffee cup was never empty and the staff all had smiles on their faces. We will go back again.
I love this era of diners. There is such an authentic feel to these. I had the basic bacon, eggs and waffle and honestly I was super impressed. The staff always made sure my cup was full of coffee and the customers there were all friendly.
Everytime I come over from New Zealand I have to visit this iconic restaurant. The staff are lovely and some are the originals from as far back as the first time I visited 15 years ago. The food quality is out of this world as are the fantastic kind and friendly staff. Prices are so reasonable too. See you again in June !
Visited on a Sunday afternoon - plenty of parking in their private lot. Not many people dining. Service a bit slow. 4% surcharge for non cash payments.
Nice food and good portions. We went for breakfast and they had great service.
We had little get together/ birthday party of 6 outdoor, it was so awesome. Our first friends dates after 2yrs🤭 They weren’t rushing us at all. Servers was so friendly, it was my first time. Food was great 😊 We were generous to leave good tips cuz they’re were so patience to us. Definitely we will be back.
1st time ever going there. The breakfast was really good. We ordered breakfast and it was really good. The grits were just the way I liked them. They were not to stiff and definitely not runny. The waiter was nice. Definitely will go back. Keep up the good work.
The Elvis omelette was really good and the vintage vibe is cool.
It’s a mid century modern diner that retains its character in a part of greater LA that has erased most of its historical buildings. Which makes it almost worthy of a visit on its own! If that’s your thing (it’s one of mine). But the food and service was also great. And fast. There’s plenty of parking in the back. I’d return.
Food was delicious. Wife & came here this morning for breakfast, and everything was so good. Staff were all friendly, and attentive as well. I definitely recommend, and we will be back if on the area for sure.
Chips has been here for a long time and has been looking better recently. Preferred over norms and i hop. Recommend the potatoes and club sandwich.
This place is wonderfully stuck in 1962! Friendly service, clean, diner menu with a CaliMex spin. It’s apparent that ownership is on-site - warm welcome and lots of hustle. 100% lives up to its 1950’s-style sign on the roof and decor. The real deal, hidden in plain sight. Best flan ever!
What a fun place to grab some grub with a 50s aura, celebrity moments, great food and family style service!!
Exactly what you want in atmosphere, flavor and service if you want the diner experience! Retro vibe with outstanding service. Great coffee! Awesome menu with standard egg and omelette dishes as well as chicken fried steak and pork chop options. Also great selection of Mexican dishes like machaca. Outdoor dining available. Free parking in back. Metered on the boulevard. Neighborhood parking on street, but can be crowded. **we were there early on a Sunday morning before church let out. It gets busy!!!
Very traditional diner food with standard Los Angeles flair. Warm, welcoming service. Really great coffee. Dependably excellent experience, every time.
Incredibly authentic place to get your breakfast. It’s open from 6 am, so perfect if you are jet-lagged. Food and service are equally great.
Took me 30 yrs to find this place. I live in the neighborhood and never thought a good restaurant like this is around the corner. The food is great, the atmosphere is clean and the price is right. Will come more often😀
Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, amazing service, what more can you ask for?
Such a wonderful experience!! Especially if you're into mid-century pop culture and such. Delicious food, too.
Food is amazing! Service was excellent, I never had to ask for a coffee refill! The interior is vintage and unique in that it's the original interior from wayback when. However, the vintage interior could use some TLC to brighten it up a bit. Aside from that, Chips has excellent food and service! Stop by if you're in the area!
Great place, we were in town visiting my sister this place showed up in restaurants near by…. Boy were we happy to find this gem…. The food is super, great tasting and big portions (not huge, just well served) my daughter had the French toast, my wife the omelet and I the country fried steak…. All delicious!!! Their coffee is fresh. It has a small parking so on packed days you will have a hard time finding a place to park, but it’s all the worth it…. You gotta try this place !!! And Barbara was a doll……
Equipped with old-school oldies playing in the background and comfy faux leather booths, Chips Restaurant was great! It was my first time out here in Hawthorne and I wanted something home style and not too filling. I ordered the Chilaquiles which comes with two eggs and beans however I subbed the beans for hash browns! The staff was kind, quick, and seemed to dote on their regulars. I ordered a strawberry lemonade and it came with nice chunks of fresh strawberries on the bottom and the waiter was kind to give me a refill and occasionally ask if I needed anything and if the food was good. It definitely was, chilaquiles weren’t overly spicy and eggs were sunny side up to perfection. I’m not in Hawthorne very often but I’ll definitely be back to visit! 💛
It's a family-run business. They are very kind people. You will certainly be very well received and taken care of. The food is very tasty and well-served. I will always return to Chips when I'm in Los Angeles. There is free parking in the back, but it's also possible to park in the surrounding area.
Great experience in a time capsule of a restaurant the food was perfect dinner fare and the staff were so thoughtful and are a wonderful team. Definitely give them a try they deserve 10 stars. A comfortable weekend stop in between life’s errands.
I stumbled upon this cute diner on my way to my Air BnB. It had good ratings so I decided to try it. The service was exceptional and the food was pretty good. The rice was the only part I didn’t really like. I think, in hindsight, salsa would have helped. The portions were really good and the atmosphere was fun. It’s been there for a long time so you know they’re doing something right. I would definitely go back.
This place caught our eye and we just loved the way it looked. So we went inside before we went to our football game to get some breakfast. The place was like I stepped into a 50's movies set. I fell in the with it. We ordered our food. They had lots of great choices. Everything was delicious. If I'm ever down in this area again. I will most definitely stop and eat here again. Everyone was so nice. Thank you..👍🏾😁👏🏾
Loved this cute LA 50's diner. Feels like being in a 50's movie. The personnel is friendly and considerate. I was not in love with the presentation of my hot turkey sandwich, although the taste was not too bad. The fruit cup did not smell too fresh. I hope I will have the chance to try the other sandwiches. Some of my coworkers had chicken sandwiches that did not look bad.
Cute 1950s style diner with friendly staff and good food. I have ordered the chilaquiles and they are very satisfying. I have ordered the three stooges, which come with three pancakes, three eggs any style and 3 pieces of sausage or bacon and it was delicious. Pancakes bigger than my head. Coffee flowing out the pot. And they got micheladas too.
I pulled off Hawthorne Boulevard expecting nothing, and discovered Chips—a striking Googie coffee shop. The jutting roof, glass windows, and tropical greenery make it feel cinematic and oddly futuristic. Inside, the coffee is unexpectedly solid; smooth, uncomplicated, and comforting. It’s not crowded, so I settled in with my latte and felt quietly lifted by the aesthetic and the calm. This gem is perfect when you crave an architectural novelty alongside your morning cup.
Really nice!!! That’s how I’m imagine an American Diner. Good choice of breakfast, super friendly people and food that is delicious. It’s also not expensive! I really can recommend the hashbrowns and the soup. I had an omelet which also was great! If you are a spicy person you can ask for habaneros.
Chips is an adorable diner straight out of the 50s but with none of the cheesiness. You feel like a regular the moment you walk in. Our services Carlos was so kind and attentive. We got the Eggs & Chorizo and the country fried steak. Both were fabulous. We will absolutely be coming back!
This place is great. Everybody was very friendly. Seems like the place has lots of regulars which is a good sign. Very classic diner feel inside and out. The corned beef hash and eggs was really good. Some of the best corned beef hash I've had in a while. They have a parking lot in back and there's lots of street parking too.
There are a lot of great diners in LA and this is definitely one of them. It’s the classic 50s style diner with a huge menu, filled with all the classics that you would expect. They have a lot of different seating options available both counter and booth. Our server was really polite and also very attentive. It was really busy when we arrived for a 10:30 AM Saturday brunch but we only had to wait a few few minutes to be seated. They have a medium sized free parking lot attached to the side but it was full when we arrived so we had to do free street parking a block away near the church. As always, I started with a cup of coffee and it’s that true strong diner coffee that I love. For my meal today I chose the Chicken Fried Steak and it really hit the spot. Their gravy is not watery and it was a good sized portion. The pricing is also fair for all the items, so it really would be good for families or large groups. Overall a really delicious diner in the South Bay. I’m not in this area often, but I certainly would stop in again next time I am down that way, and would recommend to anyone else that’s in the area.
Came here because it was near the airport. It was pretty much empty for a Sunday evening which was great. I totally dig the 50s vibe it's got going on. Booths were clean and the waitress was awesome and quick to come around. Food and drinks came out quick. Unfortunately the food was 3/5 at best. Strawberries for both the strawberry lemonade and waffles were canned I'm pretty sure. Which is crazy since strawberries are so plentiful in CA. My daughters French toast was pretty good but nothing special, just French toast done right. Waffles were basic as well, nothing wrong with them, just basic. Eggs were fine, sausage was definitely Jimmy Dean. Overall not a bad experience and the prices weren't crazy high but for almost a $100 for a party of 4 I think I would prefer fresh fruit and waffles and french toast that are better than I can whip up in 5 mins at home. Great service though and again, there was nothing wrong with the food, it just wasn't anything special.
Breakfast served all day! Machaca and eggs were good and the coffee was hot. Excellent service from a friendly waitstaff! Not a vibe at all but good for a quick, hot meal that you don't have to cook.
I haven't eaten at this establishment in over 30 years! It's good to see that it's still going strong. The place is fresh and up to date, the staff friendly and polite, and the food came hot and quickly. I ordered breakfast and the only thing keeping my review from a 5 was there was something off with the grits. Otherwise, the pancakes, eggs, and polish sausage were all fine.
Coming to CHIPS is like stepping back in time in the best way possible. The midcentury vibe is impeccable 👌, and the food and service is as decent as any good diner you'd expect...but with a very Southern Californian flair (think burritos and Mexican influence meets Midwest diner). Sometimes you just need a good omelet and to sit in a tan curved booth sipping on some diner coffee!
I've had streak and eggs @ several restaurants, and I was presently surprised to find great quality at Chips Diner compared to bigger corporate chains. The service was friendly but a bit slow. I didn't give it five stars because of the price. Maybe the price is right and I'm just used to paying less in other places. I'm definitely coming back!
Definitely an old school diner with great music playing in the background. I ordered the Denver Omelette (3 eggs) with hashbrowns (it was ok) and a side of fruit (good). If in the area, I would consider stopping by again and trying something different. Limited parking available on side street. Friendly staff but they did take a bit to bring the check so I had to go to the counter and pay.
Absolutely one of the best breakfasts in LA! I had 2 eggs over-medium and they were cooked perfectly! Asked for crispy hash browns and we could almost break off pieces to eat it. Sour dough toast was sooo good. The bacon was smokey and cooked well. OJ was good. Believe it or not, I'm a connoisseur of iced tea. It was dark and clear. Delicious! The staff are friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is my fav. It takes me back to the diners we went to when I was a kid in the 60's!
Felt like Marty McFly when stepping into Chips. Retro feel and expansive space which looked and felt well maintained and clean. Food was hot and fresh and service attentive. It’s nice to have some Mexican breakfast options - and I had the machaca and it slapped. Lots of hot sauce options and it was a nice touch for the tortillas you could do half and half to get both flour and corn. A solid A tier contender for a breakfast rotation!
The food was pretty decent. We ordered the: Healthy Turkey omelette Kids 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 bacon Chilaquiles with scrambled eggs Shortstack 2 coffees and 1 milk Total was about $65 before tip The omelette was okay needed some salt and pepper. The homestyle potatoes came out softer than I wanted 6/10 Chilaquiles were good, they would’ve been better with an over easy egg but can’t have raw yolk. 7/10 Their pancakes aren’t soft. They feel stiff on the outside and the syrup doesn’t get absorbed so it takes a bit to get into the pancakes. 4/10 Overall it was decent food. The service made up for it but it can get busy out of nowhere
Back to CHIPS in Hawthorne - the last time I ate here I was like 11 y.o. & my mom was still here. I returned today with my wife 41 years later. We had lunch then, a 🍔 & 🍟 s w/ a root 🍺 and it was good - I still remember. Today, we had breakfast and it was good. There are no turkey bacon or sausage substitute options so if you don't do swine 🐖 choose accordingly, my wife did. I enjoy 🐷 from time to time so it's all good. Their hotcakes 🥞 were on the dry side (hence 4 vs. 5 stars for food) but everything else was delicious. Wifey got a turkey omelette w/ country potatoes & a 🥞. I got Machaca & eggs - it was great. The refried beans appeared to be made with large pinto's or where moderately whipped/mashed. I splashed some Cholula on everything and tore it up.😋😋😆 Lastly, I love supporting local smaller businesses - especially old skool diners, hand written tickets, old memorabilia, a counter, and 'posivibes' exist here. I will return and hopefully they will redeem themselves on their hotcakes 🥞 Go check them out - I'll be back!✝️🛐
I don't live around Hawthorne but we were dropping someone off at the airport and had a little time to grab breakfast prior to the flight and BAM! We stopped by Chips and you can tell the place hasn't changed since pretty much the day it opened, a little bit of a blast from the past walking in here with the decor etc. The service was fantastic and she was extremely helpful, I got the chorizo and eggs that came with rice, beans and corn tortillas! It tasted good and our food was served within about 15 minutes. Definitely a place to swing by and grab a quick bite of food if your in the area.
Got the Tuna Melt sandwich with half fries half onion rings and washed it down with a sprite. It's a cute little diner on the corner with old school seats and decor. The place is a little bit old but still cute and well kept. The tuna melt sandwich was tasty, could you use a little bit of salt & tasted good with Tapatio hot sauce. The lady was very friendly. I went with my son and other kids, they had pancakes fries and chicken strips and they all finish their food. Then we all shared a delicious banana split. Prices are fair and they have a small parking lot in the back
Service was really good, but food needed more flavor, especially the menudo. Menudo should have patitas not patotas (pork feet). The pork foot looked like a bare cow foot, no meat. Expected fresh strawberries for the strawberry pancakes, not thawed frozen mushy pieces.
Amazing food, not always the best service. I went here last Sunday. Our waitress was very friendly and nice, but we only saw her when she took our order and when she brought our food. She didn’t check on our table, offered refills, or bring us the check. We ate our food and waited 45 minutes for the check. After waiting, we flagged a different employee down and told him we needed the check. More time went by, so my boyfriend just gave the employee enough cash to cover our food and tip and we walked out. It could’ve been that they were busy or that maybe we were forgotten about. Anyways, come here for amazing food! I don’t know about the service. Be prepared to wait.
It was our first time here, we were grabbing lunch. It was overall good the food was good. They say they serve fresh orange juice but it's not fresh. Also we were eating on the outside part of the restaurant and there was way too many flies that made the whole experience bad. They do serve a good amount of food for the price. The lady who was our waitress had the best customer service which made everything great. She was nice and they brought our food out quick.
Food is ok at best. We go here every time we go to my children’s Dr across the street. Dont recommend either of the chilaquiles red is too spicy to eat and green were not good at all. The service was ok until we got up to pay and leave my daughter asked for a milk shake to go and the waiter made the nastiest face, I guess they were closing in 30 minutes (they close at 2 or 3 pm) and they had cleaned the machine already but I mean, oh well.
Went here for my dad and his memories of eating here as a boy after church. The booths were a little tight. The food was not quite right to me. The waiter was nice and friendly. The decor was very much to liking, pictures of old Hollywood stars...
On Aug. 23, 2025at around 9am, I bought a breakfast for pickup at this Chips Restaurant that’s already wrapped in bag. The service is good like the receptionist is friendly, and the place is a walking distance to where I live. However, when I get home, I checked the food that I bought from them. I saw a scrambled egg with a slice of American cheese on top of the egg. That is not how you make a scrambled egg with cheese.Their pancakes is light brown instead of dark brown and they gave me less butter and less syrup for 2 pancakes. That is cheap quality for the price I pay of 24 dollars even though it comes with home fries potatoes that were sliced in cubes. When, I make my scrambled egg with cheese. First, I I break about 4 eggs for me my daughter and my husband in a bowl. Then, I would put milk or a heavy creamer to make the eggs fluffy. The, I add garlic salt and pepper for seasoning. Then, mixed them together. Turn on the stove and put the pan on it. Then, put a small Irish butter or any butter or oil little bit. Then, pour the mixed eggs in the pan. Then, add the sharp cheddar cheese while cooking it. Mix them in. Then, you can add sharp cheddar cheese at the end and then turn off the stove. It was hot on this day that I decided to go buy the breakfast and I was having a migraine headaches at that time too. That’s why there not a lot of people coming in to Chips Restaurant. I like Pann’s Restaurant better that this Chips Restaurant. If they want more people to come to dine in the Chips Restaurant they better make good food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hoping next time I try this Chips Restaurant it would be better food so a lot of people would enjoy and come in more often.
Stopped here for breakfast and was quite disappointed. Food quality was low, asked for a medium-rare steak and it was basically boiled over well done. Other items we ordered were also pretty low quality. Price was very high for what we got.
Gerat service and vibes. Garbage food, why would any eat this stuff? Nasty oily nonfresh fried steak, packaged "biscuits," canned chili, cold eggs, cold hash browns... The positive reviews must be fake.
Was Craving for Fish and Chips and Found this place. SORRY BUT THE MOST DISGUSTING FOOD EVER!!! $63.00 Bucks Down the Drain
