Yum, best Watermelon margaritas, Delicious tacos. Staff is upbeat and super friendly.
Wow, Cantina Barba is an absolute hidden gem! We have been coming here for years and tonight was the first time I ordered the burger.... and HOLY SMOKES WAS IT AMAZING! They have some delicious and authentic tacos, but I couldn’t believe how tasty this burger was. It seemed like it was a spin on a Big Mac, but wayyyy better. If you’re not in the mood for a burger, I recommend the chicken or smoked pork tacos! Full of flavor, and I love how simply garnished they are - a dash of onion and cilantro on top. Overall, everything about this place is great. The vibes, the staff, and the food all make for a really cool spot that is worth checking out in Houston. It certainly always hits the spot and won’t disappoint! COVID TIP: awesome patio for those who are looking to eat outside. PRO TIP: Ask for the secret Momma Lona‘s habanero to add to your burger!
The Tuesday burger special at Cantina Barba is hands down one of the best deals in town, BOGO burgers! The burger may look small at first, but it’s surprisingly filling, especially if you go for the double meat. I highly recommend! Wished we known about it sooner!
The best tacos and burger and plays music even a 63 yr old loves - playing the zombies / tone of the season!!
Love their tacos here - especially the vegitarian one! My friends also rave about the burgers and I can't wait to try their watermelon margaritas next time
Low key hole-in-the-wall that serves great food and drinks. Mainly outdoor seating with a covered patio and limited inside if you need a/c. Their carne asada quesadillas are THE BEST in Houston. And gotta pair it with a ranch water, so delicious!! I always have to stop by here anytime i'm in the area. The parking lot is small but you can park on the street. This place can get packed weekend nights but I feel I never wait longer than 10 minutes to order. I can not recommend this place enough.
This place is one of my favorite taco places in all of Houston. This is my go to. We’re talking about solid tacos. Open late night and early morning. Also, if you want any type of margarita, this is a place you wanna go to they even have a speakeasy in the back that’s open on the weekends at night. This is for all the locals and people that’s in the area.
One of Houston Gems, Great spot for #patiodining during #COVID ... they have a great and fast pick up service as well. They offer great selection of Sotol and Mezcal cocktails. Their smoked meat and oxacan cheese could be the best in Houston. They have breakfast tacos all day. Their veggie tacos are absolutely delicious.
Cool cantina. The frozen margaritas and palomas were very good and the tacos were delicious. They also have The Mijo Mezcal bar out in the back that is a must see. The wall of skulls is interesting. Cantina Barba is not your ordinary bar. A very cool place. Stop by and have some tacos.
I have passed by this place for many years tonight was lit they have an amazing bar music had the opportunity to experience for the first time tonight this place is a hidden gem and they have the best birra tacos in Houston Texasi wish I would have known sooner will be back. Exceptionally delicious oH my goodness !!! The birra is perfectly cheese and the sauces dip is off the chain!!! And the carde asada fries are very delicious as well great pricing!!!
Been coming back at least once a week. Awesome micheladas, just the right amount of mix. The service is almost always fast, never been when the place is super packed. The food is great, the smoked pork tacos and an asada quesadilla are a must. The menu might be simple, but the quality of the food is what keeps bringing me back.
This is hands down one of the best restaurants in the heights. Their burgers and breakfast tacos are out of this world and the staff are incredibly polite and welcoming.
Their carne asada breakfast taco & watermelon Agua Fresca are my ultimate faves but the burgers!! Tacos!! So good
My partner and I love our Sunday ritual of having brunch here! We love their breakfast tacos and other tacos, quesadilla’s, margaritas and even their fries. John is always so friendly and goes above and beyond with service and making you feel like you are part of the family.
Great spot, the whole staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The mezcal and tequila selection is nice. The food portions are a bit small for the price but made with care.
We ordered burgers and tacos. First impression was that we would be disappointed. Could not have been more wrong. All Solid. I wish I ordered more food, because a line formed and I left wanting more. Don’t sleep on this place.
Googled a late night food place and fell on this location. It was definitely well worth eating and would come back again. The barbacoa quesadilla is absolutely amazing filled with meat and cheese and topping it off with the green sauce..This was definitely bussin that I ordered more to go.
cody & jesus were AMAZING, staff was nice & accommodating, and the food was a 10/10 as always. they were playing twilight on the tv and I sat & watched while I waited out a storm. barbacoa tacos, elote, and drinks were perfect!!
By far one of my favorites spots in the city for tacos. Every time I have visited the food has been amazing. I keep coming back for the Quesadillas but the Asada Tacos are on point too. The mix drinks are very good; I personally recommend "La Paloma" because its not a super sweet drink, it has the right amount of tanginess and tequila with a nice spicy chili mix on the rim that gives it a delicious kick. Oh and did I mentioned that they serve yummy breakfast tacos too?!
Food is great and drinks are strong, there is a small parking lot but plenty of street parking. It's definitely worth a stop before a concert down the street 👍🏻
Food is always great, very tasty. I also enjoy the frozen margaritas with mezcal, those are delicious. Is a place I visit everytime I’m in Houston. Nights are wild at the bar in the back. You have to give it a try.
Okay...I know most people would come here for tacos but this burger is pretty legit! I ate it so fast and then wanted a 2nd one but I had to have some self control...I also got fries but I feel like they needed some salt or seasoning. They were cooked nice and crispy though! A beer with my meal really took it over the top 😋 I can't speak on the tacos because I haven't tried them but I will be back to try them and from the look and smell of them I'm sure I will not be disappointed!
Enjoyed an amazing lunch on the outdoor patio at Cantina Barba on a weekday and had an amazing experience. You get the authenticity of authentic Mexican food truck dishes with the refined atmosphere of a great cocktail bar/restaurant. I enjoyed the taco’s, chips and horchata! Everything was well seasoned, I received great service, the meal was prepared quickly and otherwise I had a great meal here. Definitely recommend for great tacos, drinks and good vibes. 🌮 🥑 🍹
Came here with my brother and two friends; great food and chill vibes! Perfect spot to grab some tacos after a night out or hitting the club. The salsas were amazing, full of flavor and heat. Definitely coming back to Cantina Barba! Also, shoutout to whoever decorated the bathroom with that upside down Jason and the blood splatter everywhere. Sobered me up quick.
Great, cozy mezcal bar which also serves outstanding tacos, quesadillas and burgers. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar and are then promptly prepared and delivered to your table. Indoor seating is limited but there is a nice outside deck offering a lot more space when the weather is nice. The food is a bit pricey but absolutely delicious.
Got the pastor and barbacoa tacos. Both were good, but the barbacoa was especially delicious. They also had a good selection of tequila, I forgot what tequila I got but it was really smooth. I'm not really a tequila guy but maybe I'll become one now!
The food, atmosphere, and staff were all awesome. Visited for the first time with a few friends on a late Friday night, and we had no issues finding a place to sit. Friends told me to try a margarita and glad I did because it didn't disappoint! The al pasta and carne asada tacos were delicious. I appreciate all the staff that helped me and wish I could remember names to shout y'all out!!
My favorite restaurant in all of Houston! Food is always served quick, hot & fresh. I have been dozens of times & will be back dozens more.
The burritos are really good (I sub the fries for rice) and service is great. It's convenient that they are opened late. I usually pick up after I put our baby to sleep for a late dinner.
I stopped in for some takeout. The service was good. The food was ready quick. The roast pork burrito was delicious. I really loved the red hot sauce they gave me as well.
Really good tacos, I had the pork, potato and eggs breakfast taco and it was great!
Came here to meet up with some friends. I really enjoyed this little spot. I got some chips and queso and added salsa. The lage size was enough for the whole table of 8. I really liked the queso, it was good quality and the salsa was okay. I would like it spicier. I got a happy hour margarita, but they still charged me full price because it was 7:04 on the ticket, so that was a bummer. The one downside was that if you sit on the patio, there were a ton of flies. They need to get those little fly fans for the table to keep them away bc no one want flies sitting on their food/drinks. I will come back in the future especially if going to a local show at White Oak Music Hall 🎶 🙂
Smoked pork are the best tacos they offer, and the plantains are a treat. Chips were oily, soggy and average queso and beans. Update: Chips were fine. They are similar to those at Fusion Taco down the street. We went at night and needed to sit outside. It was so dark that we had to use a phone light to see our food. Unfortunately, not a great place for families with young children at dinner.
Cantina Barba Was a pleasant surprise with great drinks. The mezcal margarita was very good and had a nice smoke spice to it, you should also grab an extra mezcal shot to go along with it as the drinks are small. I have to say that the tacos were at best ok. I only had one type of taco the beef fajitas taco but in my personal opinion if you can't make that great I hesitate to try more. I'll be giving it an other chance but the 4 star rating is strictly for the drinks!
Bar manager was friendly and welcoming. Mixologist was flawless and fun to watch doing her drink magic. We ordered the elotes, carne asada taco, pulled pork taco and Tex Dip. All was fresh and nice but not exceptional. Drinks we ordered were Pinaple Hibiscus Margarita, house margarita and Death Proof. All were fine but again not exceptional. Bar and resturaunt are clean and fun. Great place for a pre-show meal for a date.
Almost all the tacos were great: Barbacoa, Smoked Pork, Papas con Rajas, and Steak and egg were all good. The tacos al pastor were almost inedibly dry. Take away service was okay. Would be better if they had more than one person at the counter to manage take away orders instead of having to wait in the same line as on-site orders.
I’ve been coming here for the past 5-6 years since I moved to Houston. A buddy recommended it to me, and it instantly became my favorite taco spot to go to. But I don’t come here that often. Why is it that you ask… it’s my favorite spot after all. Their prices are just a bittttt overpriced. These 2 tacos cost me $13.41. Just a Carne Asada and add avocado…basically $14 for 2 tacos that are slightly bigger than street tacos is crazy work. Please, y’all’s prices are a bit much. I can go to another taco spot around town or a damn good taco truck and get more for less. Other than that, the vibes are immaculate. Customer service is straightforward but nothing to write home about. It’s really a “No BS” kind of spot, so you just get what you get. They’re not rude, but I feel like often times it feels as if they’re a bit too “cool for school.” Another annoying nitpick is they don’t have a phone number you can call, which is…bizarre to me. Maybe they’ve added one since this review, but I’ve never been able to find it. The deck & cover they added on the side is a really nice touch compared to the gravel that was there before. It keeps the sun from destroying your soul in the middle of summertime. And the small little shack they have on the opposite side of the deck is a whole damn vibe in the summer and whenever they have it open. You get some quality DJs in there, and it’s a super fun time. Overall, I’ll keep coming back because they’ve never given me a reason not to. This is one of the dopest spots in Houston to hit up for some tacos by far!
After reading about this place on Secret Houston I wanted to love it so much. Unfortunately I did not and one of the reasons was because of why I wanted to go in the first place, Birria. Upon arriving we were told that the Birria isn’t available until 2pm (would have been good to know) so we ordered other tacos off the menu. We tried the papas con rajas (best taco we had!), smoked pork and carne asada. Apps we had were plantains. The meat tacos were fine, just like any other taco and the tortilla seemed pre-made. The best taco was the papas which was very good! The plantains were amazing as well and would recommend. After we got our food the lady who took our order came and told us it was our lucky day because the Birria was done early. So I eaglery hopped in line and got 2 orders. First the price was a bit high because it was $11 for 2 tacos and then the whole taco itself. I must have hyped it up in my head so much because the tacos were disappointing. We had Birria a couple weeks before in Vegas and those were damn good, so I was hoping the same. Unfortunately it wasn’t close. The meat and broth were fine, no flavor really, and the tortilla seemed pre-made again. The only flavor came from the cilantro and onions. Needless to say I was let down and wouldn’t recommend the Birria. We were told the most popular item on their menu was the hamburger, and no one in our party got that, so that’s our fault I guess. If you stop you gotta get the papas con rajas and plantains. Also make sure you stop Thursday - Sunday because the bar next to it is open! We wanted to try the bar (another reason I wanted to visit) because it’s the tiniest bar in Houston and the drink menu looked fire!
Its a small place, the food is good but prices kinda high. the drinks are on point tho. I got a watermelon margarita.. well a couple of them and some tacos sat on the patio. Wasn't loud and was able to sit with friend and just chat and enjoy the breeze. Only one restroom was a big issue the line was long but staff was nice and fast
Great late-night spot with tasty tacos and a relaxed vibe. The food had a nice smoky flavor, drinks were good, and the atmosphere felt lively but comfortable. Staff were friendly and service was smooth. It can get crowded at night and parking isn’t always easy, but overall it’s a really solid place to grab food and hang out.
Cantina Barba Is a classic mezcal bar, I visited the bar at night after winding down from a fun night in the city. The food here is reasonably priced, and the ambience is pretty cozy, I personally haven’t had a chance to visit the bar in daylight but I’m willing to bet it’s prettier in the day time. Ambiance: outdoor patio 10/10!! Spacious, and vibrant at night. Indoor seating 6/10 a bit cramped, indoor seating gives off dive bar vibes. Cuisine: 10/10 classic bar food, the nachos were even better!! Price Range: reasonably priced, the chicken quesadilla was priced at $8 with a drink. Parking: 4/10 awkward real estate location, late night stiff parking. Alcohol/smoking: Alcohol/Smoking friendly Operating hours: 9AM-2AM SUN-THU, 9AM-3AM FRI & SAT, great spot to hit up late at night.
Where can you get mezcal margaritas and tacos on a Sunday evening after 11PM? Cantina Barba! The mezcal margarita is pretty decent on alcohol content, but would like to see a bit larger margarita for the $12+ price you're paying. Tacos are $4.50/per so I'd recommend getting the burrito on a food/$ basis. The red sauce has a good spicy bite to it. The green sauce is not spicy and compliments the food well. The food is made to order so within 10 minutes we had our order delivered to our table by the cashier. Indoor seating is limited (~6-8 total indoor seats) while plenty of outdoor seating is available. Plan ahead: Very limited parking, you may have to park along the street.
Barbacoa Tacos - $2.50 each Elote - $4 Plantains - $3 Total was $12 & change after tax, not including the tip. I got the tacos without onion and cilantro. The meat isn’t barbacoa meat. They give half of a sliver of lime for two tacos. The meat tastes like kinda dry brisket. The elote comes with spicy mayo, cheese, and chile powder. The corn is kinda hard. Comes with half of a sliver of lime. They didn’t even fill the styrofoam bowl. The plantains... I asked if they were going to be hard or soft (basically if I was going to get true maduro that’s soft, squishy, and sweet). He said soft. They came out and they’re hard and not really sweet. They come with melted cheese, peppered with queso fresco. I don’t know.... the price doesn’t really make sense for what I can get in the surrounding area. I’ve had better elote from a stand. I’ve had better barbacoa tacos from a truck. I’ve had better platanos from a taqueria. All within the area. I’d say this is a latin cuisine restaurant with the vibe of a taco truck & the quality of food from a hipster latin “restaurant”. I don’t know. Not super worth it to me. But I’ve had better in the neighborhood. Also, I’m Hispanic so maybe that plays a part. I’d say 2.5 stars.
This place is super cute and the margarita was one of the best I’ve ever had. That being said, I felt like the tacos were average. I was most disappointed in the elote because it was obviously canned corn, which they then added the traditional elote toppings to. If the corn wasn’t canned they would have earned another star.
If you come here for happy hour, get here early. On a Tuesday afternoon, the line was non-stop after 6 PM. I preferred the frozen mezcal margarita over the traditional frozen and I only ordered chips & queso. The chips and queso is garbage. It reminds me of cheese sauce straight from a can and it was not hot, barely even warm, super thick, and absolutely unappetizing. The chips are thick flour tortillas and need to be seasoned better. I had the cantina burger several nights before as a take-out meal, and it was just ok. I didn't care for the special sauce as it tasted like a sauce you will get from a fast food joint. Service was not impolite but could be improved. They do not have an efficient system set up to provide for a shorter wait in line. I do not know that I would make a trip any length of time to come here but I might try to get here for an earlier happy hour.
Not a bad place to get a taco. Great ingredients. Good price. I ordered one asada taco and one smoked pork taco. Pretty simple both came with cilantro and onion. Not street style, so they are a little bigger. Tortilla was nothing special, I could tel it was machine cut but well cooked over an open flame. To wash it down I got a michelada. I will say that it is on the spicy side, great flavor. Only complain is that michelada didn’t come with a lime. Red salsa is pretty spicy green salsa not so much. Inside dinning space is pretty limited. I’d say it’s a good in and out spot nothing to brag about.
Good food, but service has gone downhill and not what it once was. On our last visit, we waited 40 minutes for our food. There were three of us and we each ordered 4 tacos. There were only 3 other tables occupied so it was a pretty slow Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, I had to go up to the counter to check on our food twice; once after 20 minutes and a second time about 15 minutes after that. On my second time asking, one of the kitchen cooks informed me that the people working the front counter had forgotten to pass on my order... YIKES. We received no apology for the delay or for the mistake on their end. We were offered to go boxes as their way of trying to make amends… When the food finally came out, it was cold. This was after a 40 min wait. We finally decided to give up, finished our drinks and left. We’ve been customers here for 3+ years and have seen a steady decline in service at this establishment. Sad, but it seems like money is all they care about now. Recommended items: Smoked Pork tacos 🌮 (I add avocado and cheese), micheladas, and plantains (with crema & queso). 4 stars for food/drinks, 2 stars for service.
I got 2 carne asada and 1 pastor tacos with an horchata drink my sisterhad the same but with a paloma. The staff was friendly but the food was disappointing and the drinks. We also tried their Agua de Jamaica and it was too sour. The food was too overpriced for it not to taste good. It was a disappointing experience considering spending $70 just so the food to be tasteless.
Not sure how the food gets such great reviews. The food was slightly below average and way overpriced for the taste and portion size.
I ordered a burrito delivered from here because I heard you can order them with French fries inside. Being from near San Diego, I was excited about the thought of ordering a California Burrito. What I recieved was one of the smallest burritos I have ever seen. If a happy meal came with a burrito, it'd be this size. It tasted pretty good,, but low on all fillings. For $15 plus the cost of hot sauces, the portion is just unacceptable. It was probably half or even a third of the size of a regular California burrito. I'm beyond disappointed. See picture for scale with 12oz soda can. I finished it in probably under 10 bites.
Dive bar that sells food, go for that and the frozen mezcal margaritas. Hamburgers are soooooo overhyped, you will be disappointed and wish you were across the street at What-a-Burger (if they had a bar) oh, don’t get the guac taste like it’s out of a squeeze bag. Decent soundtrack. $$$$
My girlfriend just picked up food from here. The tacos are tasty but very small and not worth the price. The plantains we both ordered were burnt, soggy and greasy. The only reason I tried to eat it is because I was starving and the establishment is about to close or else I would’ve brought the food back and asked for a refund.
This is the 3rd time I have placed an order for pickup. Me and my co-workers ordered food from here for the last time! I always order the cheese dip with the guac and carne asada which is great. BUT! They give me a bag of stale tortilla chips EVERYTIME!
1 star ⭐️ for bad customer service from the owner. I was parked outside waiting on family members to go inside to eat and was told we needed to park somewhere else because we were taking 70% of his parking lot. Be humble. Dude
I used to love this place, live 8 blocks away, and walk there on my way to concerts at White Oak or just because any day of the week. However, the last couple of times I've noticed the quality of the food has gone down. Today, I got a couple orders of quesadillas and added beef/pastor as usual, and this is what they did!!! Barely put 3-4 tiny cubes of beef and didn't even grilled the cheese enough. For $5/quesadilla, that was ridiculous. I'm never going back or bringing our group on friends anymore.
My experience at this location was disappointing. I ordered a barbacoa taco, a steak with eggs and onion taco, and an elote. My girlfriend ordered the fries. We also ordered a couple drinks which were awful, I returned the drink and had water instead. The elote had no flavor, I couldn't eat it, I threw it away. The barbacoa also had no flavor, I added a little salt which made it edible, but the filling was minimal. The fries had a huge glob of avocado right in the center of the fries which I thought was careless. I would not recommend ordering a watermelon margarita. I do not recommend this place if you're looking for authentic Mexican food. Please do not be fooled by the pretty presentation. The food lacks flavor and it's overpriced.
Ordered through door dash and the order was cancelled 30 minutes AFTER it was supposed to be delivered. No phone number to call Cantina Barba? A restaurant without a way to ask for help is ridiculous. Unreliable, hiding from customer service, and I no longer recommend. Don't take a chance on getting service like we did.
This is the second time in the row that I've gone to order food from this place. Which I always enjoyed, but waited almost 15 minutes for somebody to come back to the bar and take my order. There seems to be no urgency for customer service. When I left tonight there were 8 people in line waiting. Sometimes success breeds arrogance.
