Had a wonderful dinner at Copper Bar tonight! The service was truly impeccable. Both our male and female servers were so attentive and kept checking in to make sure everything was great, I just wish I had gotten their names. The host was also fantastic and made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we walked in. As i’ve mentioned in my past reviews, I really value great service even more than the food. That said, both the food and service were excellent. We’ll definitely be back!
Beautiful sunset, beach and ocean views at Manua Kea resort with good food, service and local live music. Fresh seafood dishes along with vegan and land dishes, especially love the KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower), which has incredibly light breading. Visit every time we are in the area. The wine list is good, but corkage is also available, currently $45.
This was our favorite spot during our stay at the Westin Hapuna, located just 'next door' at the historic Mauna Kea Hotel! When we couldn’t get a reservation at Manta, our concierge recommended Copper Bar, and we’re so glad they did. Thanks to the convenient shuttle service between properties, getting there was easy, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like a magical experience. Breathtaking views, warm service, and incredible food. Everything about this place just hits right. The newly remodeled space offers a beautiful atmosphere, complete with live music and hula dancing, which makes for a truly memorable evening. The food? Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The Caesar salad was crisp and refreshing, a perfect start to the meal. Pro tip: they’ll happily split it if you're sharing. The daily catch was cooked to perfection, and the steak was rich and tender, on top of thick, savory mushrooms. After dinner, be sure to take a stroll down to the dock to catch a glimpse of the manta rays gliding through the water. It’s an unforgettable bonus of dining at the Mauna Kea. Copper Bar is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and take in the best of Hawai'i. We’ll definitely be back.
Copper Bar truly exceeded my expectations! Jaslyn, the General Manager went the extra mile to curate a birthday celebration with a quieter table, utilizing our candles + decorations as well as gifting a beautiful printed frame with a personalized birthday wish. It was truly special! The beet salad with shrimp and burger with fries were delicious as well as the chocolate peanut butter dessert. Allergies of gluten and dairy were graciously accomodated. The ambience is super cozy and inviting. The live music was unexpected and fantastic. When the staff came over with the birthday dessert/flare candle and had the musician sing happy birthday with a personalized name, it truly made our celebration meaningful!! Jaslyn, thank you so much for your attention to detail, kindness and generous assistance creating a memorable celebration! We definitely recommend visiting the Copper Bar in your travels!
Love this location — great for a quick bite, drinks, or to watch the sunset. The food itself is very hit or miss; for example, the gyoza shown here was one of the best dishes I had on the island, but the sushi was just ok. Drinks are great, service good except when they won’t seat you despite dozens of tables open.
The views, food, and live music were amazing! Their flatbread was delicious as well as their fresh catch of the day. Calamari was so fresh and crispy. I would skip the beet and arugula salad, nothing to write home about. Other than that, we had a perfect evening at the copper bar!
Great view, friendly bartenders (the host sucks, left us standing there and didn't come back so we just sat at the bar) the food is incredible. We had the wings and ribs, both likely the best food we had all week. Manta had better cocktails, maybe go to Copper Bar for dinner and finish off the night at Manta for a nightcap.
One of the best places on the island for meals made from local meats and ingredients.
Very cute open air restaurant/bar at the Maunakea hotel - the vibes were romantic and relaxed. It’s a great spot to catch the sunset views, and grab a few cocktails before dinner. They have live music playing along with a hula dancer. Even with the music, the vibe is still very calm and relaxed, and you can continue to have a conversation. When the live music isn’t playing, you also hear the sounds of waves crashing on the beach. The food is so-so, but the ambience and location make up for it.
For those who have been to the Mauna Kea in the past, the more recent remodel of the Copper Bar in recent years is stunning. I apologize for not getting photos of the Copper Bar itself but the attached photos are of the beautiful sunset views. Copper Bar is great for tapas, sushi, and happy hour but doesn’t have a lot of air-down dinner options. The cocktails are intoxicating and you are almost always treated to an incredible hula experience during your meal. I wish I could transport myself to the Copper Bar as we speak
We love this place. Live entertainment, staff is friendly and fast, and the food was great. Really loved the sashimi! Reservations recommended.
Had reservations for dinner yesterday. We arrived early, so we decided to get a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. I had the mai thai frozen cocktail. Delicious! Service was pretty good. Dinner service was amazing! Loved our server. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner. We never felt rushed.
Excellent atmosphere and food selection. Sashimi selections were excellent. Mai Tai is one of the best on the island.
I had such a great experience here! The restaurant is beautiful, the food is amazing, and the views are stunning. There was even live music and a Hawaiian dancer. I highly recommend the sushi which may be some of the best I’ve ever had! I also tried the mushroom pizza which was very delicious.
Wow, we had a perfect evening at the Copper Bar, from the warm welcome from the staff and friendly service to the perfect view of the sun setting. We ordered the calamari, heart of palm salad, pineapple flat bread, and volcano sushi roll with the jalapenos on the side, and everything was flavorful and fresh. We also enjoyed a mud pie at the end of dinner. And as of this wasn't enough, there was live entertainment -- with music and dancing so beautiful, i felt compelled to ask who it was. His name is Pomaika'i Brown (he was the actor who played the cook in the movie First 50 dates) playing the ukelele and the Hawaii guitar, and his wife Toni beautifully dancing an array of hula dances. Their performance really draws you in, if you allow it , and helps you feel the true spirit of Aloha. I highly recommend this experience!
Hampshire (late menu) was excellent! Drinks and comfortable chairs were great. Overall very nice experience.
Exceptional service from beginning to end. The restaurant was completely booked, but the host found a way to seat us! Enjoyed a delicious KFC fried cauliflower appetizer then exceptional Mai Tai and Margarita followed by mahi mahi dinner & fish & chips from Gilbert the cook who even visited our table! Great views 110% satisfied!
Great place to get drinks and some food everything was awesome here. We were able to just walk in after a long day of driving.
Mahi special with rice and vegetables was amazing. The view is incredible and the service is wonderful. Try the house drink special too- passion fruit, orange juice, guava juice and pineapple juice.
Great bar. They have a bourbon drink that they smoke. It's amazing. Great staff. Beautiful atmosphere.
Cooper Bar has a great atmosphere and location on beach views, live music, and great food. Our server John gave great customer service and was familiar with menu. We had the catch of the day. My wife’s birthday dinner was celebrated here at Cooper Bar, great drinks, we will return.
They are currently severely understaffed. Much of the restaurant had reserved signs, which we quickly figured out meant they don't have enough servers. We sat at the bar. Service was great. Had the calamari appetizer which was super fresh. Two of us had the beet salad which was excellent. Love the live music. Hope they can get properly staffed
Went on the first night and last night. Great staff Fantastic sashimi
Great all around the service was good. The atmosphere was beautiful and the sushi was super fresh and the cocktails were delish. Be aware though if you book a reservation here they charge a $50 cancellation fee for each person that doesn't show up. That's what I was told when I booked the rez, not sure if they enforce that or not. I thought it was odd that they told me the only time they had for dinner was 8pm but then I got a text at 7:15 that our table was ready. It would have been nice to have eaten earlier if it was available... Oh well, we still had a good time. We were there on a Friday night on labor day weekend and it was super quiet and not a lot of people there.... Which I am ok with...the fewer people the better in my opinion.
One of the best meals I've had in quite a while. Excellent sashimi, delicious flatbread pizza, lots of tasty small plates and salads, and the baba ganoush was out of this world!
My family has been coming to Mauna Kea Beach hotel in Hawaii for years, and it’s become a truly special place for us. Every time we visit, we look forward to eating and spending time at the Copper Bar. The team there (Sho, Kanoe, and Keola) welcome us like family. They are the heart and soul of this place—their kindness, warmth, and genuine hospitality keep us coming back year after year. The food is always incredible, but it’s the people who make The Copper Bar unforgettable. Most recently, I stopped by to see if we could arrange a special dessert for my parents’ 57th wedding anniversary. What they did went far beyond anything I could have imagined. Not only did they create a beautiful dessert, but they also changed the menu to say “Happy 57th Anniversary Roger and Susan,” made a framed picture with thoughtful words, and even presented them with special wedding lei necklaces. It was truly amazing—thoughtful, personal, and full of aloha. We left with full hearts (and full bellies!) and memories we will treasure forever. Thank you, Sho, Kanoe, Keola, Jaslynn (the GM) and the entire Copper Bar team—you made a beautiful milestone even more special.
Awesome place. We had dinners reservations and were seated on time from a friendly hostess. Our server Tony was great, very attentive and personable! A local we met from Mahukona recommended the KFC appetizer (Korean Fried Cauliflower), it was the bomb! Almost ordered it again instead of an entree. Bartender Austin makes a great drink and was great to chat with Rex & Lisa Northern California
We had Daniel from Illinois. Stud! Totally took care of us. Manager was highly involved, took our drink orders. We didn't have a reservation and they all worked together to make it happen. Delicious pizza and sushi.
My wife and I enjoyed our experience at the restaurant. We loved the atmosphere and the service was excellent. We made a reservation so we didn't have to wait long to be seated. It sounded like without a reservation was close to an hour wait. Our drinks and food came out quickly and everything was good. Drinks were expensive, but tasted great.
Definitely off the beaten path if you're not staying at the hotel, but probably worth the drive. The menu is fairly small and mostly consists of small plates, sushi, flatbread and a some mains. We ordered a couple of cocktails which were okay but not as amazing as the rest of the island imo. The soup of the day was a lobster curry...omgggg amazing!!! Tried the sashimi (we made it nigiri) with a trio of tuna, salmon and amberjack..it was nice. Then we split a mushroom/bacon/pineapple flatbread that was alright. Staff is nice. Ambiance is fair.
Loved the view and ambience! Slow island table service. Super kid friendly and friendly staff. Food was awesome!
This bar is located in the 4 star Mauna Kea resort located on the Kohala coast of the big island. Wonderful location and views, great food and atmosphere . Servers name was David , does a great job taking care of his guests. If you're ever visiting the big island make it a stop.
This is a pretty cool bar. They did a great job decorating. The layout is nice. They often have some sort of live music. The servers are wonderful. I didn't find the food at this resort to be impressive AT ALL. But we thought this restaurant offered the best selection of all the restaurants at Mauna Kea. We were pretty bummed actually because when you're staying here, there isn't much food nearby, so you're somewhat stuck for options. 🥴
The best choice at Mauna Kea Hotel during renovations. Comfortable atmosphere overlooking the ocean. Friendly, but stretched thin staff delivery a fun experience. Food quality is good, to very good.
The Copper Bar overlooks picturesque Kauna'oa Bay and features live music and hula. We had the dip trio with outstanding bread followed by several appetizers which were all tasty. After sunset as a bonus we strolled down to the Manta viewing area and saw 5 mantas barrel rolling as they enjoyed their plankton treats. Pleasant experience.
The atmosphere was beautiful and the food was decent, so I really wanted to like this place. However, It felt like the staff member not very welcoming toward us as Asian guests. It wasn’t a language issue — we do speak English — but the restaurant was quite noisy, and we simply couldn’t hear what he said, he seemed irritated and walked away to call another staff member, which felt uncomfortable and unnecessary. We came mainly to see manta rays, but unfortunately none appeared that day.
We ate here at first night staying at this hotel. Friendly stuff and place is great. We asked if the chef can make salmon rolls for my son and the chef made it for him. Food were good. Service was a little slow but that’s everywhere in this island. Sashimi was great though
Good customer service! Very expensive! And they are confused about certain dishes! They have “Vegetable Roll” in the menu which to me it means Fresh Spring Roll. I got vegetarian sushi instead. I told the waiter that they should explain in the menu that is a sushi vegetable roll and he told me “this is what it is in this country”. I told him that at Fairmont Hotel close by the vegetable roll it is actually a Fresh delicious Spring Roll, not a sushi,so he had no more comments. So we payed the bill plus tip 100$ for 1 burger with fries, a “sushi vegetable roll”, a beer and a margarita and a broccoli appetizer. Way too expensive. Nice setting though. We had drinks yesterday, sitting at the bar, which were ok. The best I think is Margarita. I tried the strawberry basil mule and it is too sweet for my taste and I tried the cinnamon mojito which was ok...not a lot of cinnamon flavour.
The food was a decent 3. Def not worth the price. Service was horrible and slow when it happened. Pretty lackluster experience unfortunately.
I’ve seen a lot of complaints about service and I will say our server was actually great! And the food was fine when we actually got it. I got the catch of the day and it was very good but took a while. I think we’d been there for almost an hour when we finally got our food. When they brought our food, my husband’s burger was rare when he ordered medium well so we let them know. They finally TWENTY MINUTES LATER brought the right burger… by that time I’d completely finished eating and they’d taken my plate away and he was still waiting. Our server was great and volunteered without us asking to take it off the bill—seems like a kitchen/management issue that the food takes so long and they don’t seem to rush food that has to be fixed.
Brought friends here for a treat. The meal started well with attentive service. Drinks and an appetizer served promptly. But the calamari was the chewiest that I have ever experienced. And a few bites tasted ‘fishey’, which is not appetizing. Drinks were ok; the bartender really didn’t know how to make a proper ‘Old Fashioned’. The rest of the meals were fine, nothing exceptional. Then we were totally ignored for the next 40 minutes. We had planned on sampling the dessert options and having additional drinks, but we wound up just leaving and getting dessert at the Westin next door where we were staying. Our server gave other tables much more attention; not sure why, we all wore collared shirts, nice shoes, etc. Gave the server a poor tip; we will never return. We do NOT recommend.
Might have been nice back in the day. Had dinner here two nights and was really not impressed. Expensive but average. The beet salad was good. The other salad we had was something I could have easily made in my kitchen. The blackened fiah of the day was nothing special. Over seasoned.
Good customer service and decent food for a resort. We enjoyed the sushi!
Great atmosphere, but that was about it. Our sushi rolls were OK. Nothing great. Ordered the catch of the day and the fish was old and smelt bad. Our server was hardly around. Would not recommend it and will not be back.
Tonight I experienced one of the most insulting experiences of my life, after a 2 hour wait for our food we were served pizza, with a tomatoes in stead of sauce, Mac and cheese with no flavor, steak with the consistency of sand, and chicken wings with hot sauce instead of flavor. After a long hour and a half for our drinks and a 2 hour wait for our food we had no patience for the udon noodle with no flavor or broth. After our terrible experience finally came to an end, we were surprised to find out that our appetizers had finally arrived, around an hour after our food. I am generously giving this 1 star, because there is no lower option but I would not recommend this spot to my worst enemy. Don’t come here if you enjoy good service and good food.
Tonight was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. It took two hours for our food to come out and an hour and a half for drinks to come out. The appetizers came after the meals. The service was the worst experience. I’m only giving the service one star because I cannot give it zero. They never filled our waters and never served us our food. The food was very mediocre, the mac & cheese was the worst mac & cheese I’ve ever tried. The steak was also very bad. We arrived at 7 PM and are now leaving at 9:30.
The service was absolutely unacceptable, especially for a resort of this supposed standard. Our server was nowhere to be found for most of the meal, and when I tried to get her attention, she blatantly ignored me because it ‘wasn’t her table.’ The lack of teamwork and attention to detail was shocking. We had to rely on the manager to bring essential items like a steak knife and Tabasco, which should have been on the table from the start. This experience was a complete failure, and I’m beyond disappointed.
Our party of 5 was seated at our table at 6:40 and we ordered. At 7:30 our appetizers came. At 8:00pm, I asked if someone could check on our food and was told it would be 15 minutes. I asked to speak to the manager at 8:15pm when our food was not there but two other tables who had arrived after us had been served (one was a bigger party than us too). The waitress told me she would get the manager but that they were taking our food off the grill currently. At 8:30, the manager had still not come and neither had our food. It was not super busy either. We left and will not be coming back as we had to get our kid to bed. I am extremely disappointed in this experience as I had always heard such nice things about the Mauna Kea and this was my first time at their hotel. For a restaurant in a 5 star hotel, I would expect better service and communication. I realize that waitresses have no control over the kitchen staff, but the fact that the manager couldn’t even be bothered to come and speak with us speaks volumes about how this restaurant is being run.
Such a bummer. We were here 5 years ago and the food, atmosphere and service were great. HOWEVER, we went back for my friends 50th birthday today. I noted this on the reservation (which the restaurant website directed me to Open Table). I also noted this to both the host and hostess and the waitress. When we were seated, the I told the waitress that I'd take the bill, but she ended up letting the birthday guy buy. We had to find her to place our dinner order (I stood at the server station until she showed up). She said she refill our waters but never came back so we had to walk to the bar to get refills on water. We waited to order dessert and she never came, so again had to track her down to request or bill. When she brought the bill, I politely explained our disappointments and she showed no compassion or care and just asked "where are you guys from"? I explained that we would never be back and she responded "oh, ok".
Used to love coming here, beautiful location, close to home, but whatever happened to this place is unbelievable. Our food took over an hour to arrive, and service was painfully slow. Our server basically vanished after a couple visits to the table. When I politely asked to speak with a manager, I was met with a know-it-all attitude and completely dismissed. Absolutely terrible. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone anymore.
