Booked a Sunday lunch for the family, the service was fantastic and the food was gorgeous with generous helpings. The staff are lovely and make sure you are enjoying your meal and have everything you need without being pushy. Altogether a great experience and definitely a place we will revisit.
First time dining at The Plough at Galgate, despite passing it many times over the years. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The food arrived very quickly and was delicious. We shared some starters, Cheesy Garlic bread and Mozzarella sticks. For the main, I had the Southern fried chicken loaded chips, and my Mum and Dad had the Crispy chilli chicken loaded chips. The bill came to just over £43, which is about average for such a place.we would come back.
Came here for work... The place looks lovely, bright and clean (rose is doing a wonderful job) Photos show this fantastic building with large seating areas to the side and rear. Activities for the little ones in children's corner. The landlord Steve was very accommodating and again very welcoming, he was busy preparing large high quality beef roasting joints for today's service...(looked and smelt amazing) Great venue with extended seating available for larger parties and a huge free carpark 😎
Great pub with a large outdoor seating area, which is a sun trap and opposite the main northern railway line. The pub offers a good selection of beer, wines and spirits to choose from. Food menu has lots of great choices, from bangers and mash, to a good Sunday Lunch. Great atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff. Has a small car park, with limited spaces due to its location, on the busy A6, but don't let that put you off. A dog friendly pub.
Incredible memories of eating here as a student and 8 years on the place is still performing so so well meeting my rose tinted expectations (in fact in many ways beating them) The Godfather burger remains an unbelievably enjoyable experience. Such great value. Really juicy and succulent beef patties with thick (and I mean thick) cut bacon and what feels like inches of melted cheese. The fries are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle (personally still prefer the thick cut chips which my partner had with her lasagna though) Service is great and they have a good and robust system for covid. Overall a fantastic meal out.
Really good food and service , nice atmosphere, would recommend to anyone that is wanting a roast dinner and is in the area.
From the moment of entry, the welcome was warm and sincere. I am a fussy eater and the food was simply out of this world! The service was faultless including the once standard but now rare check back to make sure everything was satisfactory. Having heard they host a variety of events rest assured i will be visiting again!
Lovely warm and welcoming pub. I was made to feel at home by the girls serving behind the bar. Gracie was attentive and professional. A credit to management.
Now under new management. The food was fantastic and the staff were lovely. In their short stewardship they've already planned and funded a community vegetable garden on the pub land which I think is commendable for community cohesion and much needed low-cost food provision to those willing to participate... Excellent!
Came for dinner today to the Plough and from start to finish it was excellent. We were 2 adults and two babies wanting lunch. We were greeted by Jackie and offered a seat with loads of space for the 2 prams. We were offered a highchair immediately which was sturdy, clean and had secure straps to keep my little girl in ( doesn't seem much to ask for but I have been no where that's had the 3 things above so big major tick for this) You go to the bar to order and it was Shirley who served us. I'd mentioned I was going to have a pudding, and they let's us have a tab, this was perfect as it meant we could also add more drinks to the tab. Just overall more convenient to do it this way. We got there ar 12.10pm and there was a few tables full already and throughout the hours we were there it filled up inside as well as outside. The menu has a tasty choice of starters, light bites, mains, sandwiches, sharers and puddings and there was NOT ONE THING I didn't want to try! And it made it harder to choose as we kept seeing all the mouthwatering food coming from the kitchen. Because we were wanting to try a few things we picked 2 starters, a light bite mean and 2 puddings (attached the pictures) and every bite was amazing!! The mucky fries with chicken spring onion and truffle mayo was just incredible. I think they are going to be a regular choice for me. We were sat for over 3 hours and all the time we were there Jackie and Shirley interacted with my daughter 21mths and my niece 6mths as well as having a good chat with us. The pub itself was very clean and the refurb has been done very well. A great atmosphere with nice background music. Possibly my best experience locally with atmosphere, customer service, and food. I have already planned to go back next weekend and this is absolutely going to be a regular dining place for us. I was apprehensive as I did love the Plough previously and must have been over 50times with the old owners so if I was truthful was unsure what to expect but honestly, Jackie and Chris are doing an excellent job and the food is incredible. Make sure you do go in and support them.
Lovely, cosy feel pub. The staff were attentive, checking if they could do anymore for us.The food was well presented and good value.
Really good value and tasty roast dinner! Lovely warm service too, thank you 🤩
Stopped here on our way to the Lakes. It turned into the best Sunday lunch we have ever had. The service was very friendly and we did not have to wait too long for our food. Could not believe the quality and quantity for less than £15 each. We are even planning a return to the area just for the lunch. Excellent.
Absolutely worth every penny. The food was spot on, with great portions and flavour! 🤤 We highly recommend the 'swords'! Dog-friendly, really big outside space and tables to enjoy the outside whilst eating. There is an app you can download to order drinks and food at the table. Great for those of us that are extremely vulnerable to COVID and what to step your toe into the outside world and feel safe doing so. Thanks again for the great hospitality and the biscuit treats for our dog. She loved them 🥰
Lovely staff, good food - reasonably priced, great atmosphere. Has a large beer garden, fair size carpark. Near the canal. Noise from road as it is tight on the A6. Also next to the high-speed rail line but you don't notice it inside or if outside, after a few have passed. Only downside is there are tables in front of the dartboard so it is not available sometimes. Will return.
Lovely little local pub serving great food, with a warm welcome, friendly staff and fresh produce. We visited on a Monday evening and stopped in for a drink and some food. The chef was at the bar and was really chatty and accommodating, I asked for a side salad that wasn’t on the menu and he was more than happy to sort it for us. The bartender was also lovely and friendly. There were a few locals in after work enjoying a pint, which gave it such a nice, relaxed atmosphere, it felt local and welcoming. Would definitely recommend. Pop in if you’re in the area! Dog friendly too 🐾
Well just pop down here from Liverpool, and the atmosphere was warm and cosy with a nice welcoming from the staff, the drinks where reasonably priced then we decided to get food, we got starters of cheesy garlic bread, smoky bbq chicken wings, battered king prawns all for £14.49 (which was delicious) mains was smothered 6oz steak with mushrooms crispy onions and peppercorn sauce with chips and peas which was nice but the desert was the nicest part as the the tastiest sticky toffee pudding known to man kind, I would definitely recommend the staff are nice and polite and any issues we had they rectified immediately without any fuss. 1m*'s
All day breakfast at the Plough For £12.99, the photo doesn’t do it justice, it was well cooked and very tasty, I’m really fussy about my sausage and don’t often enjoy them, but these were excellent, very meaty and perfectly spiced, the bacon was crispy, the chips were fresh and hot, for a pun it was well done and good value! The staff were friendly and very helpful, if I’m in the area again I would return
A great little place with a cosy feel. The menu is traditional pub fayre keenly priced but none the less prepared to a high standard - great value for money. The staff were exceptionally friendly. We'll definitely visit again.
Lovely dinner and really friendly and polite staff. Really enjoyed our meal! Big plus for being dog friendly without overwhelming our dog with cuddles or pets.
Lovely couple who own and run the pub. Food was delicious. Lots of help on finding our way back to our motel
Wonderful service brilliant food and the garden area is beautiful and ideal for family. Definitely 5*****
Really enjoyed the meals only let down by the sugar tax on drinks!
Apart from the 30minutes wait on food, and one team member serving, we couldnt fault The plough. The team are friendly and the food was great value for money not just in quantity but also taste. Will visit again soon.
We were made to feel really welcome. Great lunchtime menu up until 5pm - meal and a beer for just £9.99. The scampi, fish and chips and chicken wrap were really tasty. We'll definitely visit again soon
A lovely little pub which could have been a stand alone pub. the food was amazing and so was the atmosphere, a real credit to the area could teach some of the big chains a few lessons in hospitality
Just had a change of hands in the last month been in a few times since and always made to fill welcome. Staff are quick and professional and the food going out looked great hope to try that soon.
Without doubt, one of the most pleasant welcome's I have ever received. Excellent well priced food which arrived quickly. Thank you 🙏
Great little pub, fairly priced food and beer, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff
Really friendly staff and locals, great food. We stayed overnight in the motorhome after having a lovely relaxing meal and chat with the locals. Everyone was very friendly
Thank you for allowing us use of the car park in our emergency yesterday. We'll be back for a pint sometime.
Great value tasty lunch deal. Super quick, piping hot. Friendly service
Friendly staff, good service, nice nachos with tasty sauce, and decent prices. Vegetarian options are limited, but we thought the Mediterranean linguine was really tasty (if you like courgette and aubergine!) and the vegetarian sausages were acceptable (even if the mash was a puree rather than mash) Offering simple swap-outs on the menu for those avoiding meat (e.g. beanburger instead of beef patty, or halloumi/tofu instead of chicken, etc) would make all the difference.
Stopped here for dinner rather than eat at the services, glad we did. Delicious pub grub, Good sized portions for reasonable prices. Nice atmosphere, quite cozy with lower ceilings. Staff very friendly & excellent service
Very good value food that tasted great too. Very friendly and helpful staff. Only thing that let it down was poor choice of ales, but we had great wine and cider. And with the added bonus of being dog friendly too!
Had a lovely family meal here, we were seated between the two toilets which was fine. However, the breeze from the front door was not great and we found the peas overcooked. We would come back again.
Friendly helpful staff, but food a disappointment Not good portions and poor presentation. Cooked ok. The pub felt a bit run down. No condiments or cutlery on the table. No salt or pepper! The coffee machine was not working, not reaching temperature. At least the helpful barmaid offered an instant coffee. Some soft drinks they had run out of. Soom food took a fair while to arrive, but at least it was hot. It tasted ok, but nothing special. Toilet waste poor. The cubical door would not close or stay shut! Carpets were grubby and needed replacing or a good clean. Shame as the staff were great, and it could be much better with a bit of effort.
My first visit a few days ago was very pleasant on a weekday lunch time with lovely soup and a roll - but the establishment was very quiet. Today on my call on my way to hospital visiting the service was terrible - my drink and ice cream (ordered at the same time) arrived at least 10 minutes apart and I had finished the sweet before the coffee arrived. They were both ‘deposited’ on the table, rather than being served - and neither waiter even made eye contact. The spoon for the ice cream was slid across the table at me. This pub has the potential to be lovely (as indeed it was on my first visit) but I won’t be calling again too quickly at peak times as I know I deserve more for my customer money.
Here used to be our favorite restaurant, things changed after this Thursday dinner. The food was not lots choices since the menu changed but it still ok. Loaded fries and Pork sausage tastes good. There was a cockroach came to my daughter's jacket on sofa and I was very shocked. I was trying get help from the waiter the bar was busy so my husband took it away and solved it. I was very uncomfortable after saw it and took my daughter left. Then my husband told manager there was a cockroach, the sanitary conditions are worried makes me very upset and we decided to leave. The manager seems can't believe what my husband said and just said "ok" then finished this conversation. We feel very frustrated about his attitude and what we experienced. I think it's time to say bye to this restaurant. 2 stars for the memories of this place. Just to clarify to your reply, the third picture is the meal we ordered on last week, and the rest two picture form 2022 and 2023 are from previous visits, which to prove I used to eating here. No sure how Google review manage the order of the images anyway that's not the point of this review.
Sadly the experience was totally different to our first visit here which was really good, hence our return! BUT, upon ordering I was stood at the bar whilst staff were stood talking between themselves, I thought the lady was about to take my order as she had pen and paper next to me, I said could I order the ….. and she stopped in her tracks, and said oh I didn’t see you there !!! Strange when the blonde girl did and the dark hair girl did, both looking in my direction but no one acknowledged me for 5 minutes !!!! So the lady who finally went on to take my order, placed it in the system, asked if the burger was to have cheese and bacon on it, I grabbed hubby’s attention and asked if he wanted bacon, already knowing he doesn’t like cheese, he said no just plain burger and I’d already stated he doesn’t like cheese, so I ordered the remainder and the drinks, then paid. We waited then for the food, the burger arrived WITH cheese AND bacon, so that had to be returned. The garlic bread, chips and mushrooms arrived and the correct burger came out, then 20 minutes before we were asked if all was ok with our meals and I said I haven’t got my meal !! The lady that served me, went to see what was happening, (as the other girl who had brought the food out said it would only be a minute, and it wasn’t, ) She came out a few minutes later with a piping hot lasagne and said ‘sorry for your wait’ then also said it was left in the side because the chef thought it was being served separately!!! I would have accepted the apology not the BS about being left on the side when it was 1: piping hot, 2: ordered as a meal WITH chips and garlic bread of which arrived 20 minutes earlier and were cold by the time the lasagne came out! I don’t expect 5* treatment but I don’t expect to be ignored when stood at a bar or lied to when bringing food out making up a story to excuse something !! Sadly we won’t be back because otherwise the food here has been good! Although the mushrooms were like sponge !
After a long day travelling home we decided to eat at the plough having checked food service was open till 8pm. We arrived at 7.45pm to discover the chef had decided to close the kitchen at 6.45. What is the point of showing service hours if they can be ignored.
Not a pub more like a youth club! Food was edible but the service was awful was like the pub was run by kids. We waited for 55 minutes for food even though they asked us to email ahead and would be served on arrival due to the kitchen closing at a certain time We had to clear the plates off the table ourselves onto another table as they didn’t come to clear them we had to get all our own cutlery just no service!! Also would suggest if you don’t know how to make a cocktail don’t have it on the menu! Would defo not return here at all, worst place we have visited on our holiday so far and if I could have given no stars I would have
Pre ordered food to arrive at 7.30pm. Had to wait nearly an hour for food to arrive. Nothing was said about if you wish to order dessert please do so now so that when we had finished our main course we were told kitchen was closed for desserts. Very young staff who were not very attentive. Had to get our own cutlery. Cocktails were not good. If we were not honest could have got away with not paying for our meals as young staff were under the impression we had already paid. Need the learn from The Stork about what proper service is. Will not be going again during our stay here this week.
