Great food especially the babka, cozy ambiance and very friendly staff. I would definitely go back.
I love love love a good almond croissant and these folks do not disappoint!
BLACK STAR 🤩🤩🤩🤩 fantastic, variety of Pastries for children and adults, the breakfasts 🍳 are well prepared with good presentation, the coffee to wake up every morning exquisite, good atmosphere definitely recommended we will return soon to delight in what this excellent cafeteria offers us ☕️
I love coming for my morning chai lattee and my breakfast burrito✨️ the staff here are nice and atmosphere very clean love this place 🫶🏻
This little gem was really great! Vibe, service, food and coffee is superb. Shout out to this barista Rizza 🫶
I'm new in the neighborhood I'm just starting to get to know the place and this is a good place to visit and have a coffee with a fresh pestry the staff is very friendly and attentive definitely my favorite coffee shop
Always a treat at Blackstar Bakery in LIC! Great food, from buttery pastries and croissant sandwiches to delicious toasties. The staff is always warm and smiley, and the space is clean and cozy. Love coming here!
Love Black Star!! Their coffee is excellent, pastries and food are delicious, especially their "Avocado Toast", my favorite! The atmosphere and the staff are very nice! Thank you!
If you want to enjoy REAL good coffee drinks, this place is a place to go. Good coffee and good vibes in one place. I like to come in their quiet hours, usually afternoons but mornings get busy.
This place is a hidden gem in super-industrial Long Island City. The salmon croissant is insanely delicious and quite light on the stomach. The croissant itself is fluffy with that satisfying crispiness. The 2 eggs sandwich w/ sriracha is also a nice meal. Not too spicy, all was just right. The matcha lemonade is to die for. It’s insanely good, despite the eye-brow raising name 😭 The French vanilla latte was nice, and the variety of milks offered (oat almond etc) was a plus. The berry lemonade, Palmer style is just as thirst quenching as the matcha lemonade. Equally refreshing is the OG Palmer. And the desserts are so cute, see the photo attached; big thank you guys for letting me photograph in your space!! Pistachio Muffin is solid, has actual pistachios in it, just FYI and the Apple Dount has a sort of Apple Jelly (or merengue) in it! A nice touch for the apple lovers out there. Anyway: if you’re in LIC, go here. It’ll be an oasis on a sweltering day.
My go-to cafe in LIC. Staff is always so friendly and warm. Great bakery options and lattes.
I just discovered this spot today while strolling along gantry park. Really good coffee with a variety of pastry selection. They also serve food like brunch-y light yet fulfilling items. I’m coming back for the breakfast burrito and i’ll take a photo of that next time.
A perfect spot after a nice walk at the park. Located very close to Gantry park, this cafe serves the BEST coffee drinks I ever had and some fresh and delectable pastries and sandwiches. I personally love their Breakfast Burrito and Mozzarella Toasted sandwich, I added some turkey for an extra protein and it’s amazing! I recommend their Chai Latte, it’s my favorite. Very friendly staff and clean space and the vibes is just right.
This bakery makes delicious stuff. You can actually see employees baking as you place the order. Items are freshly made on the spot (or at least the items we ordered). I posted a picture of the menu, I don;t believe it varies too much from store to store. The Avocado Toast is really tartey and, again, super fresh. We cot some croissants... AMAZING. we came back for more! The seating area is of a decent size. The WC is actually small, I can't recall if there is a Male/Female or just one for everyone. Customer Service is Excellent, super friendly staff.
Fire. Quality food and great price. Also the matcha latte was one of the best I’ve ever had!!
Love this place! Pastries are freshly baked and coffee is always outstanding besides that the service is wonderful, the staff are friendly welcoming and always accommodating.
★★★★★ Black Star Cafe is an absolute gem in NYC! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a cozy yet modern vibe that makes it perfect for catching up with friends, or just enjoying a peaceful coffee break. The baristas are friendly and truly passionate about their craft, always delivering expertly made coffee with a smile. Their espresso is rich and flavorful, and the pastries are always fresh and delicious. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or just looking for a great spot to unwind, Black Star Cafe never disappoints. Highly recommend! Black star is not just another coffee shop it’s a vibe!
Great location if you want to have some coffee / breakfast by the waterfront. They have a variety of coffees including cappuccino and espresso. Prices are good. They also have fresh breakfast menu including croissants and bagel sandwiches. Can become crowded at certain times. Will recommend.
The food and coffee at this café are top notch. I ordered the Sriracha Breakfast Sandwich (egg, cheese, tomato, mayo, and sriracha on a toasted brioche bun) and it was absolutely incredible. So freaking good. I also had a hot latte which was equally delicious. Excellent quality coffee. I wonder what kind of coffee beans they use?… It was really crowded when I went on Saturday morning at 11:30am and there was about a 5-10 minute wait to get my food and coffee. Not too bad. There are a few tables inside and also a few outside but all were occupied so I took my food to go. Staff was very friendly and helpfully answered a few questions I had about the menu. I’ll definitely be coming back and I’m looking forward to trying everything on their menu.
One of my favorite coffee shops in all of NYC. I love the cold brew and the vanilla lattes, and all the pastries are delicious - especially the almond croissants. I’ve had their avocado toast, multiple breakfast sandwiches, and their breakfast burrito, all of which are amazing. The staff is friendly and works super hard during the busy hours as well! But please, for the love of God, stop using the wooden forks and knives. They are by far the worst utensils known to man. Not only is the wood not sharp enough to cut hard bread crust (obviously…), but the fork makes sure that every bite tastes like a popsicle stick.
Great quick brunch place! Went to LIC location because we needed a place that would take less than an hour so we could make a ferry in Gantry Park. They have counter service so it is fast, but the table seating is relaxed and pleasant like a regular restaurant. I am gluten free and they had bread for any sandwich order. They recommended the Avocado Toast. I’m not a millennial so this was my first try for this item. The gf bread was very good, the avocado was ripe, the poached egg was ideal - fully-cooked white and runny yolk, and the micro-greens added the flavor. Making it dairy-free was not an issue. My friend liked his burrito a lot too, but it was not gf so I didn’t try it. The homemade lemonade with mint was just right. I liked the open, airy feel and the big, southwest facing windows, and the whitewashed interior. Bright and cheerful. Bathroom was tidy. Staff was nice and helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
I really love this coffee shop! The coffee tastes great, and there are plenty of drinks to choose from. The pastries are fresh and yummy too. The staff is kind and welcoming, and the place feels cozy and relaxing.
Absolutely lovely spot! The fresh mint tea is incredible - huge, fresh mint leaves that taste so good. I added a little bit of honey and it was perfect. The decor and aesthetic of the bakery is really pretty. Also, the fresh baked goods are delicious! The chocolate chip cookie, pan au chocolate, and parmesan & leek croissant are all incredible! Couldn’t recommend this spot enough.
A True Neighborhood Star! I've been searching for a go-to cafe since moving to the area, and I think I've finally found it in Black Star Bakery & Cafe. The service was the cherry on top. The staff were genuinely friendly, attentive, and happy to offer recommendations. You can tell they're passionate about what they do. Black Star Bakery & Cafe is more than just a place to grab a coffee; it's a wonderful experience. It's a must-visit for anyone who appreciates quality baking, great coffee, and a cozy atmosphere.
Whenever I want to have brunch in Long Island City , I go to Black star Bakery and cafe, because they’re the best. Even though they have indoor and outdoor seating, i just love taking my food and eat it by the waterfront with the perfect view of New York City. My fave in their menu is the the second avocado toast with gluten free bread+ egg. So good! I also like their coffee- they use Oslo coffee roasters which is awesome - so oat milk latter for me. If you want more food options (bowls, sandwiches, pitas…), I would suggest trying to other branch that is on Vernon street.
This is hands down my favorite cafe! The staff are always warm and welcoming, the drinks are consistently delicious, and the atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to relax or catch up with friends. They are dog friendly as well. My go-to order is the yogurt bowl with extra nuts and an iced oat latte with triple shots!
I recently visited Black Star Bakery & Cafe and ordered an avocado, egg, and cheese sandwich on a bagel, paired with a pumpkin spice chai latte. The latte was exceptional, easily the best I’ve had in a long time, with a rich, perfectly balanced flavor. The sandwich was also very satisfying, fresh, and well-prepared. Despite visiting at 9:30 a.m. and encountering a long line, the experience was well worth the wait. Highly recommended!
Still My Favorite Spot, But Please Get My Order Right! As a native LIC resident, I’ve been going to Black Star Bakery for years, and it’s honestly one of my favorite neighborhood spots. I love their croissants (the “everything croissant” is my go-to), the cozy coffee shop vibes, and the staff is usually really friendly and welcoming. It’s the kind of place that feels like home. That said, I’ve had my “everything croissant” order mixed up as a bagel at least six times now. Thankfully, I’m never in a rush and don’t mind waiting for them to fix it — but lately, the guy in the back seems frustrated when it happens, as if I should just take whatever he made. Today was a bit disappointing. When the order came out wrong again, he seemed visibly annoyed and didn’t even bother to toast the replacement — just slapped some cream cheese on a cold croissant and handed me the bag. For a place I visit every morning and where I spend at least $15 a day, that stung a little. Still, despite the mix-ups, I can’t quit this place. The croissants are that good. Just hoping they slow down a bit or come up with a system to avoid these repeated mistakes. 4.5 stars — because I’m still gonna go. I love those darn croissants!
Nice location of two that are near each other; right near the park and waterfront! I walked by and smelled fresh pastries being baked and it smelled amazing so I had to stop in in try. I was happy to find this cafe was open late comparatively, into the evening which was exciting. This bakery and cafe is styled so nicely inside! I was really blown away by the atmosphere and the wonderful music selection they had playing. The staff was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable to my questions about the products (which you’d be surprised how many people are just showing up and know little about what they’re serving) so that also was nice. I got some pastries and some coffee and the coffee was pretty good. More of a medium with a chalkiness like cafe bustello ; which if you like is the style I got served. I prefer it more dark with less of that grit but it was good. It’s really a nice store to sit in and recharge between moving spaces. My friend got mushroom tarts to take home and raves about them; buys them in the multiples! So definitely would recommend them. Good croissants too and the waffles. It’s a nice spot with also a nice, very stylish, and VERY clean bathroom which is always worth an extra star and worth mentioning. 6/5 for that. Great cafe! Assorted croissants like everything croissant and churro croissant , as well as cake pops too! Check them out! 😎 ☕️ 🥐
I just had to share my amazing experience at Black Star Bakery & Cafe! Their food and drinks are truly exceptional. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. The pastries are freshly baked daily, and it shows in every bite. The coffee and hot chocolate are expertly crafted, making it the perfect spot to relax and unwind. Whether you're a foodie, a coffee lover, or just looking for a cozy spot to hang out, Black Star Bakery & Cafe is a must-visit. I highly recommend it!
This place is a gem! The atmosphere was so peaceful with plenty of natural sunlight, making it a perfect spot to relax. I ordered the latte, which was incredibly delicious, and the staff was so welcoming and knowledgeable about their menu. I also tried the m&m cookies and it is delicious. I’ll definitely be back to try more drinks!"
Amazing coffee, killer pastries — and the clean, cozy vibe makes it even better. But the real stars? The staff. Super friendly, fast, and always welcoming (Huge shout-out to Lyn, Riza and Jalla 👩🏻🍳⭐️). They remember your order, your name, and make every visit feel like home. Spotless space, great energy — Hunters Point is lucky to have this gem. Go once, and you’ll be hooked!
We were introduced to this cafe and really love the vibes around here! Menu may seem expensive but the servings are generous and the food’s great. Definitely recommend their palmer and matcha lemonade as refreshers. We’ve tried the burrito, breakfast plate, and grilled cheese — hoping to come back soon and try other offerings on the menu!
One of the best cold brew I ever had actually not one of the best, but this is the best cold brew! Also, this is only cafe i know in new york that serves pistachio Milk!! Not syrup but a milk which is makes me want to come back more and the pastries worth every bite. Kudos to all the staff, all of you did a great job!
I love blackstar and order/visit pretty frequently - they have one of the best chai lattes ive ever had (made in house i believe) and great breakfast sandwiches!! the only thing i wish was better was the prosciutto. i’d love a prosciutto di parma that was sliced alot thinner than they currently do it- but not a deal breaker :)
Been going here for years. Their bakery selection is the best part. The hot coffee is good, but the iced coffee is way too weak for my liking. Their other prepared dishes are all satisfying. People that work there are pleasant and really keep the line moving. The prices keep going up each year and it's at a point where I reconsider if I want their $10 egg sandwich, or the bagel place's $6 BEC. You can see the gradual increases in the menu photos posted.
Tasty babka (slightly crisp on the outside, gooey/dense middle)! No WiFi, but very nice seating.
Solid coffee and exceptional customer service. Decent space for working but I can definitely see this place being crowded
Mostly, this is a great place, a variety of good bakery food, including for some dietary restrictions. Today I went in to get some thing and the cashier picked her nose and then got my items without having gloves on. Maybe have those handling the food wear gloves, and different workers as cashiers?
I’ve been coming here for a while for there coffee but haven’t had the time to try their food options until recently. Everything from this place is delicious but it’s definitely pricey for what you get. They tend to have extra charges for milk and flavor substitutions. Overall it’s good but more as an occasional visit. Would recommend!
Solid croissant, generous avocado portion and really, REALLY good matcha. Grateful this is just down the block from me, will come back! I also like that they dont have wifi, the people taking full on conference calls and hogging tables in local cafes is out of control.
I really like black star cafe and definitely recommend it as a very cute cafe with good quality food and coffee. The reg coffee is consistently great, but the lattes have oscillated between incredible and mediocre. I do kinda believe that if you pay $6+ for a latte it should be amazing but you can’t count on it. But maybe that’s on me for buying a $6+ latte. Service oscillates the same way. Most everything is overpriced, but sometimes it’s totally worth it! It’s the ambiance and gamble on quality that always keeps me coming back for more 🤣 they do have wifi but not for customers
Black Star Bakery is the dreamy French corner in the middle of a crowded neighborhood. The croissants are buttery flaky, not greasy and with the perfect crunch. Please order the smoked salmon with micro-sprouts, or the eggs cheese (+ prosciutto). All the pastries are to die for, the chocolate twirl and mini apple tarts yum. So are the savory bite size Burekas, potato, mushroom, cheese, you name it they have it. Almost forgot to mention delicious hot beverages (wink wink hot cocoa or soy-cappuccino). Looking forward to another rainy or sunny Sunday morning to go and choose new things to try from the delicious display. Follow @destination_food33 for more reviews
I came here with my friend to get two drinks and it wasn't bad! I got their strawberry matcha and my friend got their pumpkin chai. Both drinks were on the sweeter and creamier side. Although they were good, I wish their was more strawberry in the matcha and that the matcha was stronger. My friend also loved their chai drink, but we did agree that the chai flavor wasn't very strong. Nice spot to grab a drink or bite. Note: There is no wifi here to do your work.
Wonderful Cafe to hang and relax. Coming in from the cold weather the cafe is so warm!! Love the minimalist decor and pastries display. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating as weather permits. Waited on the line and unfortunately got skipped to order. There was two cashiers, one actual the other mobile (on IPad). Sadly, I was unnoticed waiting on line and had to wait for the other cashier. Ordered a 16 Oz Dark Hot chocolate. It is made out of chocolate chips (not powered) which is great! Tasted very good as well! Would of given 5 stars if it wasn't for the non-acknowledgement on the line.
I love the coffee and food and have been a frequent customer for years, basically since they opened when they took over grape/bean/leaf. It’s an hour before closing, I drop my kid off at the gymnastics nearby and need to finish out the workday. Their laptop table with two chairs are taken and there are five empty tables, but they still won’t let me work on those with a laptop. I don’t fault the servers at all, this is clearly an owner policy, and I’ll take my business to one of the other many coffee shops that will let me sit there for an hour on a computer. I am a good laptop person at a coffee shop - I buy food and coffee and stay an hour max. But I was turned off by this from a local joint.
The girls working the cash register are rude and unprofessional. They behave as if they are doing you a favor. And the the gall of flipping the screen asking for a minimum 15% tip! For what? Taking my order with a bad attitude? The guys making the food are a little better but also have just a miserable look about them. Not sure if management is aware of this and are looking into it. Looks like I am not the first one to bring this up. There is no cell service whatsoever and no wifi. I understand some people were abusing it. Give a 30 min wifi passcode with each purchase over $15. It is a shame, as the food is good. With dozens on new places popping up who provide a far more pleasant experience, Black Star better start making some changes.
Decent coffee. Got more annoyed with the slow pace of the workers. Ordered a latte and cheese stick, store was quite empty but the staff taking my order was occupied talking and forgot to warm up the cheese stick. It was giving to me 5 minutes after and still cold. Sucks when it’s morning rush and you’re delayed not because they’re busy but non-attentive staff.
Cute spot by the LIC waterfront. We stopped in to grab some breakfast on a Sunday morning. We tried to avocado toast #2 with gluten free bread add egg and the breakfast bowl (naturally gluten free). Overall food was mediocre especially for the price. Might be better for just coffee & pastries.
priced baked goods and sandwiches. I got a cappuccino, which was decent but nothing memorable. For food, we got: - cheese burekas (3/5 - not the best quality but cheap and fresh) - spinach ricotta danish (2.5/5 - not a lot of filling) - salmon croissant sandwich (4/5 - really nice amount of salmon and croissant was pretty good) - breakfast sandwich (3.5/5 - the sauce was very good, but again nothing too memorable) I could be down to try a couple more sandwiches/pastries. Good place to grab a quick, relatively cheap bite.
Ordered a bagel with cream cheese and a cold brew. Bagel tasted like it was from a grocery store and cold brew was so light it was tasted like water. Stick to their espresso drinks. I’m sure other stuff is good here given the popularity but what we ordered was a miss.
A general issue in the majority of cafes in NYC. Please take better precautions with food safety. While staff were cleaning surfaces, I noticed flies landing on the food displayed inside the mirror. It’s important to keep food properly covered at all times.
I tend to come here on occasion due to its proximity to where I live; however, there are far better coffee shops and bakeries in the neighborhood (Overflow Coffee and Bianco Latte Bakery to name a few). The last few occasions I have received incorrect drink orders during non peak hours. Overall, I would rate the quality of drinks and food as average.
Been coming here for sometime as it’s the closest place my work - but would never go out of my way to go here. The coffee is fine the pastries are about on par with grocery store baked goods. The real negative of this place is if you unknowingly open a laptop not in a designated “laptop area” here you’ll get scolded by the owners immediately. My wife witnessed the owners berating a worker into tears as well the other day. Horrible owners horrible pastries, take your business to one of the many other amazing coffee shops in Hunter's Point the options are endless.
Overpriced. Charged me $10 for four scrambled eggs. And they weren’t even good! I was presented with a sad pile of unseasoned egg WHITES. Do not waste your money here. Edit: to clarify - the pastries are quite good and worth the money. Just don’t do what I did and order brunch. Hope this helps
Coffee was very burned, they forgot my order twice. Then gave me the wrong thing, said it's what I paid for, and made me pay again for the right thing. I won't be back.
Was charged more than the total shown at checkout. Tablet showed ~$71; I tipped $5 (self-service). My credit card was later charged $91.92, which appears to include an unauthorized tip. I tried calling but couldn’t reach anyone and couldn’t find an email contact. Hoping management can look into this and issue a refund for the difference.
