Decided to check this place out after watching the hyped up review videos online. Let me start off by saying, the hype is real. Their chicken is tender, juicy, and you get big pieces too. The chicken is seasoned just right, but beware of the spice levels. I love spicy foods, and I mean habanero spicy with any food I eat. I went with their choice of hot for my sandwich, and boy was that thing spicy. Come to find out it's habanero and ghost pepper mixed together. Their waffles have great flavor(hint of nutmeg if I'm not mistaken), nice crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Their fries are crispy and well seasoned too. I also tried their banana pudding, it was delicious. Chunks of banana, wafers and some whipped cream on top. Parking is street parking or a parking lot next door from what I saw. The parking lot charges about five dollars for the day. Overall, a must try for anyone who enjoys a spicy chicken sandwich.
This was my first time trying Howlin’s Ray’s and I can definitely see the hype for this place! This is basically like Dave’s Hot Chicken, but California stapled. My cousin took me to the original location in LA Chinatown. There’s only street parking available, but when we got to the location there was already a line to go in… that’s how you know it’s a good spot! The service was honestly the nicest I’ve ever experience for a fast food place. The inside was small, but it was more of a pick up and dine outside type of place since there were tables available outside. The servers were really friendly. They made conversation with us and even asked me about NOLA since I was in California for vacation. They even gave me a sample of their hot chicken to see how well I can handle their “hot” spice (spoiler: it was so hot!). When it was our turn in line, we ordered their 3 Medium Tenders ($13.00) and Shake Fries ($5.00) with their Comeback Sauce ($0.75). When I tell you the tenders were huge, they were HUGE! One tender could literally fit a small bowl. The medium spice level was enough for me, as it already had a minor kick to it. They also come with pickles and a toast inside. The shake fries were pretty good as well. Their comeback sauce is kind of like Cane’s sauce but with a bit more zest. Overall, even though this is a fast food type of place, I’d definitely recommend you trying it out if you ever visit California.
With so many good reviews I feel like this is redundant, but I still want to show my support cuz they deserve it! This place and its owner is incredible. The service and atmosphere is amazing, all of the employees are super nice and helpful, and they go above and beyond offering free items and paying extra attention to everyone. Of course, food is probably the most important thing, and fortunately It’s just as good as the service if not better. The chicken is obviously the star of the menu and they have it down perfectly. It’s high quality, consistently tender chicken and the seasoning blend/batter on every spice level is just addictively good. Unlike most restaurants, the sides are just as good as the main courses, you can tell that every item on their menu was carefully crafted and made with fresh quality ingredients. No matter what you order you will not be disappointed, especially considering how fair the prices are. Overall a 10/10, easily one of the best restaurants in la, and an amazing owner that deserves all the success. And by the way, if you go, you have to try the banana pudding, it’s amazing!
Honestly best service I have ever had. Loved the food and it seemed like every employee I spoke to absolutely loved their job. I thought the portion sizes are big and couldn't finish all my fries with a drink and burger. If I lived in LA I would definitely make this a regular spot. Place is busy and you do need to line up but 100 percent worth it. The stickers are a howlin too!
Howlin’ Ray’s fully lives up to the hype. The chicken is incredibly juicy with a perfectly crispy coating, and the seasoning is packed with flavor. I appreciate how you can choose your heat level, whether you want something mild or extremely spicy. Even with the long lines, the staff stay friendly and organized, which makes the wait feel worth it. The sandwiches are filling, and the sides pair really well with the chicken. This spot is a must try if you enjoy bold flavors and quality comfort food.
After watching tons of video reviews, we were salivating and ready to make this our first stop on our way to Disneyland! We arrived around 4pm and had little to no wait. Kevin rang us up and he was so friendly and knowledgeable! He really helped make our visit that much more enjoyable!! The sandos were AMAZING! Hot, crispy and oh so flavorful! The thin sliced onion in the coleslaw *chef’s kiss! Shake fries have a beautiful spice and the comeback sauce? Lights out! Grateful for our experience! Thanks Kevin and the Howlin’ Ray’s team! We are praying for God’s blessings over you all!
6/5 Stars — The Best Hot Chicken I’ve Ever Had I visited Howlin’ Ray’s in Chinatown, tucked away inside a small mall, and from the moment I saw the line, I knew we were in for something special. The wait was absolutely worth it. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about what they do. That energy carries straight through to the food. I ordered the chicken sando at the Hot spice level; phenomenal. Perfectly balanced heat, incredible flavour, juicy chicken, and flawless execution. I then had to push my luck and tried an Extra Hot wing. The staff warned me it would be intense, but curiosity won. It was definitely hot but still manageable and unbelievably tasty. What really set the experience apart was the hospitality. After noticing I needed water post-wing, the staff immediately handed me a bottle on the house. That small gesture made it feel less like a transaction and more like being welcomed into the Howlin’ Ray’s family. Exceptional food, exceptional people, and an unforgettable experience. I would genuinely fly back just to eat here again.
The hype is deserved! This chicken sando was amazing. I got the X-Hot and he got the Hot. They gave me gloves with the food so I didn’t burn myself. It wasn’t as spicy as I thought it would be but the hot was spicy for him, who is more sensitive to heat. The fries were FABULOUS. As was the lemonade. We waited in line for about 50 minutes but once we ordered, it was ready in about 5-10 minutes - super fast. We were able to get a table and the stuff was super nice and helpful with it being our first time. 10/10 recommend
I visited Howlin’ Ray’s in Chinatown yesterday and was genuinely blown away! The fried chicken was incredible — super crispy on the outside and juicy inside. But what surprised me even more was the amazing service. From the moment we ordered, the staff were incredibly friendly. They offered helpful suggestions, explained the spice levels, and made us feel really welcome. I also noticed how well the team got along with each other, which created a really warm atmosphere. It was my first time here, so my friend and I took a lot of photos of the chicken and the cute packaging. One of the staff members came over to check how we liked everything. When we told him it was delicious, he was genuinely happy. A little later, he even brought us some small but adorable souvenirs as a gift. I honestly didn’t expect that at all. I was really touched by the team’s passion and sincerity. It’s not just great fried chicken — it’s an experience. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting LA!
I love Howlin Ray's every time I'm out in LA if I have the chance I'll go grab a sandwich. I usually get the hot and it is pretty hot. But I've learned over time if you're getting the checking tender like the strips go one down so get like a medium or even this. Since it doesn't have the bread or the coleslaw to cool it down and the pickles it could be really hot. But the chickens excellent there's plenty of seats the line goes pretty fast and the staff are always fun and very friendly. And whatever you do when you're eating don't touch your freaking eye. Lol
My amazing friend took me here to challenge me with hot fried chicken, and of course he lost. We ordered the "hot" level and ended up tearing up (mostly him) 😂 The staff were super friendly and helpful; one even noticed him struggling and brought us extra drinks! Amazing food and even more amazing people!!
This is by far the best chicken sandwhich ive ever had (ive had many lol) got the sando with fries and waffle. The comeback sauce is soooo good and the waffle is seriously one of the best waffles ive ever had. I was shocked how good everything was. Definitely a MUST TRY when in LA. The workers are so nice and try really hard to make sure you are good and have everything you need. This place has it down to the T. The food the service the environment. 10/10!!!!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS PLACE!, Best hot chicken out there and the quality and customer service is an A+++. Shout out to Ryan for the exceptional customer service and taking care of my sister and I. Charlie for a great welcome and experience. Amazing service thank you! The whole team was fire and working hard! You guys rock! Ty
This place had an amazing staff that look and sounded like they love what they do and had incredible hospitality and their service was phenomenal! My brother got one of their classic sandwich’s and I myself being a vegetarian got what they called Mario Style fries which is shown in the third photo and it tasted absolutely delicious! If I’m back in town I 100% will go to get it!
4th time leaving a review for Howlin Rays and for some reason it keeps getting removed throughout the years? Weird. This place is hands down one of my favorite places to eat in the country! Best chicken sandwhich, hands down! The sando- Chicken is breaded perfectly and then covered in their seasoning. Add a good texas toast and some coleslaw with pickles and they have created a masterpiece! The tenders- same pieces they put in your sandwhich and definitely stand up by themselves. So good! Shake fries-The fries. The FRIES. THE FRIES! An amazing crinkle cut seasoned fry. Just amazing Dont skip on the sauces either. The house made ranch is some of the best ever! And the comeback sauce is a must with your tenders. The vibe is always energetic and everyone has that eagerness like your at an ice cream place. Wait in a line, as there is always a line. ALWAYS! (Order online if your impatient) But so worth it. We parked this time in the big paid parking lot across the street and walked to the Dodgers game. About $10 and a 30minute walk.
I would give 100 stars 🌟 🤩 ✨️ if I could, we live 2 hrs away. When we are in town we have to stop by this place has exceeded my expectations. The staff goes above and beyond with hospitality. The customer care that radiates from this place should be in EVERY business the food is excellent the staff is AAAAAMMMAAAAZZZIIIINNNGG THIS is why I dont mind driving and going out of my way to eat here. Olive garden has nothing on them because when you are at Howlin Ray's you truly are family. We need a Howlin Ray's in Bakersfield. There is a.......... Dave's chicken Nashville Hot Chicken Angry Chicken But none of them are on the scale as Howlin Ray's yes you heard me right this is finger lickin goooood chicken and they have there own drinks no fountain drinks, they do have soda cans and there drinks sweet peach pink and white can lemonade yellow and white can. There are tables outside, the staff calls your # when your food is ready make sure to stop by the counter they have a yellowish treasure box with fun pins and stickers of Howlin Ray's. There is street parking you have to feed the meter. If you are ever in Chinatown don't forget to stop by and meet the staff they will make your day. OH!!! yes, I almost forgot 🤔 to mention and get some chicken strips or chicken sandwiches too 😋 😅 🙃
I’ve eaten a lot of fried chicken in my life, but nothing—and I mean nothing—comes close to Howlin’ Ray’s. From the second I walked in, I felt the energy. The staff greets you like you’re an old friend, hyping you up before you even take your first bite. It’s rare to find a place where the vibe is just as memorable as the food, but this place nails it. They gave me a little sample of the “Hot” chicken—ghost peppers and habanero—and wow… it lit me up instantly. Within seconds I was sweating, grinning, and realizing that as much as I loved the flavor, I might not survive a whole sandwich at that heat level. So I played it smart and went with the Luis Sandi sandwich at “Mild.” Best decision ever. The chicken was crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor, while the pickles and slaw balanced everything out perfectly. Every bite had that perfect crunch and tang—comfort food with just the right kick. What really stood out, though, was how much fun the whole experience was. The team behind the counter was laughing, joking, and making sure everyone in line felt welcome. It didn’t feel like just grabbing food—it felt like being part of something special. By the time I left, I was full, happy, and already planning my next visit. Next time I might brave the “Medium” just to test myself again. For me, Howlin’ Ray’s isn’t just a restaurant—it’s an experience I’ll be craving for a long time. ***plus there’s a great little vintage store in the strip mall where we found some snagged some amazing finds!!! **hardly any seating! Good luck
These burgers are BIG! Photo does not do it justice size wise (I have huge hands). Get the dry age, worth the price. Best non-smash patty burger in the city! Hot dog was okay, not nearly as memorable as the burger. Fries were also good and large portion. Service is awesome, the ladies working during my visit were very nice and helpful.
I’ve been coming here for years, but this is my first time leaving a review—and it’s long overdue! Hands down, this is the best fried chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. I’m at a point in life where the medium heat is just right—flavorful with a kick, but still enjoyable. I tried the “hot” during the winter and it was a bit too intense, so choose your spice level wisely! Everything on the menu hits—from the tenders to the wings—and you have to try the comeback sauce. To top it all off, the service is consistently fantastic. Always a pleasure coming back!
Absolutely remarkable experience at Howlin’ Ray’s Hot Chicken today. We went at 11:30 and there was already a bit of a line. Throughout the ordering and seating process, we had the best service I can say we’ve received in a long time. Ryan, Cairo and the entire staff went above and beyond to make this a great experience. The food was hands down the best Hot Chicken I’ve ever had, coming from a Dave’s and HHC fan. Truly delicious chicken. I got a medium sandwich and it is a hefty portion. My wife got mild/medium tenders and felt the same way. We shared fries and got one of each sauce – all great as well, but I recommend the Comeback sauce. Howling Ray’s has a disciple for life in me. Look forward to the day that one of these bad boys winds up in Utah

Howlin' Rays Hot Chicken is a decently good chicken sandwich place! I may not be the appropriate audience for this place as the chicken sandwich I got was good, but there was nothing "wow" about it. We were recommended this place by a friend of ours who lives in California as a must try spot. We stood in line for about 40 minutes and ordered the medium chicken sandwich, and the "secret" menu Mario fries. The sandwich was good, but as already mentioned, at no point did I think this was a sandwich I would stand in line for 40 minutes to get again. The Mario fries also weren't worth it in my opinion, though I did enjoy them more than the sandwich myself. Personally, I enjoyed the spicy Popeye's chicken sandwich more than the one I had out Howlin' Ray's. Kudos to the customer service though. From the cashier to every other individual you interact with, they are extremely friendly and they talk to you and seem to genuinely care. They also seem to give out some freebies which is super cool. We got to try all of the sauces they had for free (which were all delicious. My favorite being the honey mustard). Overall, if you are a fan of chicken sandwiches, try it out and you won't be disappointed. However, if you are like me and you are someone who eats chicken sandwiches occasionally, you probably will end up like me and question if standing in line this long was worth the wait. I would say no, unfortunately it was not worth the wait.
Didn't like it. It looked like steroid chicken and it wasn't crispy. It's just my own preference. Home fries for me.
Food is very good, service was great. I got an umbrella while waiting in line. The wait in line was a bit long. Took me an hour before I was served. The prices are a bit high.
Sad to say last visit was late on a cold day. No line was great. Too bad the breast was way over salted and wasn't hot. Not the Ray's I keep coming back for.
The staff was so nice and so helpful. I hate places though where you are fighting for a table . Food was as expected though it's a huge piece of chicken for the price.
Food is good! Food is also super expensive too...hole in the wall, have to use an app to order, so many fees avoided if you do pick up. Great chicken spot tho! Wish it was more friendlier for the c…

Chasing the Heat: Howlin' Ray's Delivers in Chinatown
Alright, let's talk about a place that pretty much defines L.A.'s hot chicken scene: Howlin' Ray's. Tucked away in Chinatown, this spot has a reputation that precedes it, and for good reason. You know how it is here – sometimes you brave a line, sometimes you get lucky on a colder, late day. But whether you're queuing up or strolling right in, the anticipation for what's inside is always buzzing. Now, I'm not going to lie, I heard about a recent visit where a breast piece came out a bit too sa
