Everything we ordered was amazing. Portion are large. A bit pushy with tips.
Love this place! Was brought in by my uncle last time I visited. I was literally in heaven with some of the dishes. Can't wait to visit again!!
Excellent seafood banquet type food but without going to a Chinese wedding for it. And reasonably priced too!
Good, will come back. Waited for about 10min around 12pm on a Saturday. The food is great. You can see some dim sum in the rolling cart before order them. The environment is loud due to full of people ( but that also means their food are populate)
We recently started to yum cha at The Kitchen again after a years long hiatus. Our last time there the dim sum was barely edible and we vowed never to return. Recently a friend told us that The Kitchen had come back stronger than before. We were dubious but thought what the heck! We arrived about fifteen minutes after opening on a weekday and they were already almost full. We were surprised to see quite a few staff we knew from the old Asian Pearl a little further north on El Camino from the years when Asian Pearl was one of the top dim sum restaurants in the Bay Area. I could go on and on about how good the dim sum and noodle dishes are but they are very good! Come try for yourself! That's what we've been doing for the last month. We go maybe twice per week and my wife sneaks in an extra visit now and then. I especially call out their baked goods. Their dan tat, char siu so, char siu bao and bolo bao are all first rate. It's fairly easy to get a table during the week, we usually don't have to wait more than a few minutes but come early or late on the weekends or be prepared to wait for quite a while. We used to be loyal Koi Palace denizens but ho nestly, the average quality at The Kitchen is better and the price is less. Koi, you had better step up your game, there's a new King of the yum cha! Update. The Kitchen is still a very good place to go for dim sum in the Bay Area.
We really like the dim sum here and still find our way back after we moved further away. Food is tasteful and consistent. Parking can be tricky on weekend mornings as there is farmers market in the parking lot next to the restaurant. Tip (18%) is also included in the receipt, which we do not mind as the waiter/waitress gives us a reminder. Overall, this is our favorite dim sum place in peninsula.
This place deserves many more stars than given. It's easily the most authentic cantonese restaurant in the Bay Area. It's always busy, which also means that you have to get their attention for service. I come here with the mind set of getting the most "authentic" food and service which I got every time!
authentic Hong Kong food. usually long wait around dinner time tho
best cantonese food in bay area. I always bring friends from other places to this restaurant. Truffle duck is a must!!! Great service, fast speed, always full house. Dim sum is good as well. Usually no parking right in front of the restaurant, but you can park 2 blocks away in a public parking lot.
Recommended by local Cantonese friends. Best salt & pepper shrimp ever! Giant shrimp, perfectly cooked. Ribeye with scallions was tender and tasty. Classic beef chow fun. Chicken breast with king mushrooms was good but overshadowed by the beef & shrimp. Hot & sour soup was the only disappointment, sour but kinda flat, missing the savoryness of most versions I've had. Hot fruit soup for dessert. Ample portions, reasonable prices. Service was very good, attentive but not intrusive, no language barrier. I'll be back again, and again, and again....
The best of the east incorporates what is best in the west in that the meat is grilled with that bbq smoky crisp flavor! I always buy the sweet and sour chicken every time I come here, the chicken is tossed and seared to a crisp; it’s a wonder how the batter looks so perfectly fluffy. The added pineapple, onions and peppers give it such good taste. I recently tried and would strongly recommend the rib eye with pepper (they also add green onions) Anyhow, the quality of the meat was just so good and juicy coming off the grill; I will be absolutely ordering that every time i come eat here too! Crowd is noisy but food is just too good to care. Ask your waiter for extra napkins while your putting in your order; saves you some trouble if you accidentally spill something; as you’ll probably need an extra one also to wipe your face; otherwise this truly is a great authentic Chinese restaurant.
Excellent quality foods with baked goods particularly well seasoned. 25 minutes wait on a Sunday at 1pm...normal, not too bad. Staff functioned efficiently and food was circulating at a good place. Got to move fast or you'll miss the popular dishes. We did not see many green veggies. Great lunch!
We wanted Chinese food near our hotel. We went to a highly rated place that we discovered only had take out due to Covid. They recommended The Kitchen as one of their favorites, with authentic Chinese food. Oh my, what fabulous food. I had never had Peking duck, and it was amazing. Everything was tremendous. We were the only non-Asian folks in the restaurant, and it was packed. It wasn’t like the traditional Chinese food I have had. The lady who directed us there was correct, authentic and great.
This place is a hidden gem. Went in, place is pretty much full and we were the only white people there if that tells you anything. Looks really nice inside and the food is amazing, they bring you tea right away when you sit down and after you eat they bring you a sweet red bean soupy dessert that is delicious. If it werent on the more expensive end I would have ordered a lot more. The cashew nut chicken is to die for!
Food is good, come for the soup of the day. However, be ready for the noise of a classical Cantonese restaurant (which is also a part of the experience )
Compared to local Chinese restaurants such as peninsula, koi palace and other yum cha places . This one has by far my best recommendation on food quality and service.
Great food and chicken feet. Service took a little long to get food out though.
The place is not big, but the food is really good. We had dim sum which tasted and looked like they were made from their own kitchen, and not from a ‘factory pre-cooked dim sum place’. A lot of places now a day use dim sum from a central kitchen and deliver to the restaurants.
We had great dine in experience in the dim sum place. The dim sum are very authentic and the volumes are big enough for 4 pax to enjoy. (Aside from the egg tarts, which only serve 3 pieces in a dish/ per order) and the fish 魚腸粉(?), which is recommended by the waiter, is superb, but it might be too much for 4 pax with several dim sum to devour.
Typical Cantonese restaurant with the usual food. Got in and it was not what I expected from the outside. Outside is nothing to write home about but inside is clean and bright. There was a serving of tea and my uncle ordered the rest. I request the duck with truffle. He went seafood and it was the correct call. All of our dishes tasted fresh. We gotten shrimp, deep fried fish and a seafood mix on top of the duck we ordered. On the way to the bathroom, there was baners hanging on the side saying they were Michelin recommended in the past hence why their food tasted so good. Note: parking is terrible
It's worth the drive from wherever you are in the Bay area, just for the food. It gets super crowded on weekends and parking is next to impossible. If you are a large party seated at a big table, you might not be able to hear each other. It's really loud. But, darn, the food is worth it.
Heard about this restaurant from friends who say that it serves authentic Hong Kong cuisine and managed to visit it on a Friday night for dinner. As expected, there is a good crowd of diners and the two of us had to wait for about 15-20 mins before we got our seat. As expected, the food is good for the few dishes that we have ordered. Also, from the manager’s mouth, we learned that the restaurant has been operating in this location for 30+ years. A note: service will improve if you are speaking Cantonese throughout your meal.
Very delicious cantonese food (definitely among the best in south bay). I was especially impressed with the beef tendon, it's cooked absolutely to perfection. I came here for the bbq duck because according to a friend it's the best in south bay - I'd say it's among the best but not miles better than the other good ones.
Have heard about this place for a long time from a friwnd, and finally got a chance to dine in for dim sum and dishes. So far the best dim sum place in south bay area. The pictures were taken after we tasted and ate some of them before realizing taking photos. The sauteed chicken feet is very flavorful, tofu skin curd is mouthful and not tangy, and each shumai has two whole shrimps. The lamb pot is also very delicious. Highly recommend to try it out here. But be careful you would want to come here early enough for a weekend lunch.
Lunch dim sum with no wait around 1130am on a Friday. Street parking was fairly easy with more on the back. Prices are very reasonable compared to other places. Although the lunch specials like noodles and fried rice are on the more expensive side, not sure if portions are larger. We did have to wait for an add-on order for more than 20min, which was the only disappointment. Would recommend coming in for lunch dim sum.
This is a good place for our New Year dinner, Cantonese restaurant. Ordering in advance can save us waiting time, great! The serving size was average, and six of us basically completed nine dishes. The dishes taste good and the service is attentive. Recommended and worth visiting again. Give a like! Update: … We got together there again this Thanksgiving. As always, we can make an appointment to be seated on time. It takes more than seven people to make an appointment. The dishes are still delicious and plentiful, and the waiters are as warm, courteous and quick as ever. Very good! Thanksgiving dinner for my family was very satisfying!
Visited here a second time. The double boiled soup is great. $25 you can't get anything better. The menu listed the soup serves 4 people, however I think it's enough for 8! Everything else is good. The price is reasonable, and the service is also good. They charged 18% tips by default.
Came here for lunch on a weekday and was seated promptly. Food was delicious! Dim sum was ordered off of a paper, but they did have ladies walking around with trays. Fairly clean and spacious, and great prices for dim sum. Looks like a popular place for lunch, esp with large families or groups.
We walked in at around 10:30 for its dim sum and had a short beef rib to go. The taste for dim sum was good, but you can find a better dim sum place in the Bay Area. Looking forward to coming here for dinner next time.
Really good quality Chinese food. The servings are a bit smaller than other places. One dish will probably give a small taste for about 8 people, so consider ordering 1.5 orders if you have more than 10 people or just make sure to order more food than you usually would. The pork, seafood, and chicken dishes were better than the steak dishes. We asked about BYOB but one guy said he corkage fee was $20 while another said it was $15 so I'm not sure which one was accurate. No cake fee and they we're nice enough to provide a candle since we forgot. The service is better than the regular Chinese restaurant service (but maybe because my family is Chinese and speak the language). It's a solid pick for a family dinner. My mom says they offer a late night menu that's mainly rice porridge (jook) and noodle dishes. Gotta check that out one night!
Pretty much a standard Chinese restaurant experience. Helps speaking Chinese, Mandarin or Cantonese. Place can use a refresh. Probably not the cleanest but the price is about right and food is good enough.
Food is good, but inconsistent, and has gotten more expensive, as expected. Very crowded. Tables are packed in, & it was annoying that the dim sum cart kept running into my chair in the congested space.
Food is always good here. My go to place for authentic dim sum. The inside is much nicer than the outside would imply. Service is typical of an authentic Chinese restaurant -not warm or fuzzy but quick and to the point. So if you are going for the service-don’t. Go for the food.
Good quality Chinese seafood restaurant. A little on the expensive side but that goes along with the type of seafood they have on the menu. Lots of traditional Asian seafood delicacies like abalone and sea cucumber. This is in addition to the typical seafood fare like crab, lobster and a variety of fish. In the tanks today I even saw a live king crab. The dining room is big enough to accommodate a party of 15 at a single table. Any larger and you’ll have to split into multiple tables.
Best truffle roast duck! Salted egg yolk prawn was not enough seasoning but still ok. Pekin duck was so k but the skin needs to be crispier and seperated from the meat more. Peking spareribs was good but need more orange peel, toumiau was good, fried rice and noodles truffle duck was just ok. Tofu Japanese with ground pork was good
There are quite a few choices for dim sum in this area. The Kitchen is consistently good. Service during our recent visit seems to be better than before. The waiter gave us a "heads up" about the mandatory service fee included on the bill. We appreciated the transparency which allowed us to tip additionally/appropriately for the service we received. My only minor gripe was that tea was $2 per person which feels a little excessive for the tea that was just mediocre.
Update: customer service is definitely a bit lacking during dinner hours. Not only is the hostess a bit rude but the wait staff are not the most observant. Awesome public parking lot nearby, good for elderly diners. Nice well lit restaurant. We came for dim sum, not overly crowded on a weekday and pretty good. Custard tarts have great lamination. Good for the late night dinner because they're open till 1 am.
Decent dim sum. Stand out was the pineapple pork bun. Very tasty. The restaurant was clean and service very attentive. Prices were on medium high side, but about right for this of establishment. I recommend it for casual dim sum. I haven't tried their dinner menu yet.
I had 4 hours transit at SFO and didn't want to waste my money on not-so-good Chinese food at airport so we decided to make a quick visit to this restaurant, which was less than 5 minutes drive by taxi from the airport. Most of the customers were from local and Chinese, and everything was authentic and served right. You have to complete an order form at table at this restaurant, at least when I visited during the weekday. I am not sure if you have dim sum carts going around the tables on weekends. It was absolutely worth getting out of SFO dining at this restaurant. On the way back, we walked to the BART station for 5 minutes and rode BART back to SFO.
Food is good, parking is a different story. Although there's a parking lot next door, parking is extremely challenging even on a weekday. The restaurant itself is nice and clean. Waiter of course will try to steer you to all their premium specials but we chose their comfort food. Good thing about this place is it's not overly salty but the food will get cold quickly as they have their A/C full blast.
If you're craving genuine HK style food, this spot is hands down the best in town. The menu is packed with authentic dishes that taste just like they came straight from a bustling Hong Kong seafood restaurant. That said, be prepared for a bit of a wait—by 6pm, it's already a full house. The dining room is tight, with barely any space between tables, and the noise level can get pretty intense. It’s not the place for a quiet dinner, but it’s perfect if you’re here for the food and the lively atmosphere. Service is friendly and efficient when it’s not too busy, but once the crowd rolls in, expect some delays. Still, the staff does their best to keep things moving.
Decently priced dishes and the food is okay. Finding parking can be a challenge at times.
All dishes were delicious and interesting. Service was great too. Definitely come back.
Wonderful food especially the stir fried beef dishes! The drawback is the service time which takes over 30 mins for our meal to come. Ambiance and atmosphere are noisy and loud like any other dim sum restaurant on a weekday evening. Great food if you wish to wait for over half an hour to be served.
Yummy food. Been visiting this restaurant for many years. Most of the time gor Dimsum. Once a while we have dinner here. The signature dishes here are the deep fry porck knuckle. Looks like this is Macau stlyle dish. The other one is wasabi chicken and pig stomach. Both are delicious. This place is very casual and many item in the menu. All the one we ordered were delicious.
The food is excellent. Dim sum carts go around on weekends and all weekdays you order dim sum off a pater. It was recently renovated so it is very clean and spacious. The price is reasonable and the portions are relatively big. The food alone is 5 star but the service is 3. The restaurant is packed with local Chinese both at lunch and dinner times. Food is prepared in the traditional Chinese way and not modified for the American only paler. I think the restaurant should receive a higher rating.
Expect a full house on Saturdays. Highly recommend you get there before 11a. Order from the menu and select your dishes then you can also flag down limited dim sum from the push carts. You have to be fairly assertive to get anything which is expected from larger Chinese restaurants such as this one. No soy sauce or chili on the table or other utensils so make sure you ask when the server comes the first time. Dim sum itself is solid but today's ha gao (shrimp dumplings) were over steamed which melted the wrappers. Siu mai (pork dumplings), chicken feet and salted fish fried rice were pretty good.
Came here for a late night food around 11:30 p.m. spot on a Friday night. There is street parking and public lot to the left of the restarant. Inside was brightly lit, the staff greeted us and sat us down. Ordered the Ribeye Steak with vegetables, Peking Spare Ribs, and Hot & Sour Soup. The Ribeye Steak and Vegetables was great. The ribeye was flavorful and mushrooms were huge. Hot & Sour Soup was just right, left a light warm "spiciness" down your throat. The Peking Spare Ribs had a slight crisp to it and lightly covered in a sweet sauce. Overall the service was fast and attentive for a late night spot for eats. The menu contained a lot more items such as a Cantonese section and a lot of choices for seafood dishes.
If you are craving authentic Chinese/Hong Kong-style dim sum, this spot is definitely worth checking out! The flavors are traditional and well-executed, with a great variety of specialty dishes to choose from. Parking Tip: It can be tough to find parking during peak hours, so plan ahead. I recommend arriving early or coming after 1pm to avoid rush. What we tried and ratings: * Malay Singaporean Sponge Cake 5/5 * Pork Stomach with Steam Chicken 5/5 * Beef Balls 5/5 * Black Truffle Duck 3/5 * Lotus Roots Mixed Vegetables 4/5 * Steam Pork Ribs 3/5 * Shui Mai Dumplings 3/5 * Crispy Pata Chinese style 4/5 The oolong tea was excellent, and the service was quick and attentive throughout our meal. No reservations are required, which make it convenient for spontaneous visits. Overall, a solid dim sum experience with standout dishes and great service. Will definitely be back to try more.
We order the following: 1) Truffle roast duck - I recommend. If you like roast duck and truffle, this is your kind of dish. 2) Lobster lo mien - fresh lobster and slippery, saucy noodles. Delicious and seasoned well. Not salty. 3) Snow pea leaves - bit on the oily side, which is not my preference. I usually like it freshly tossed in the wok with garlic. 4) Tofu with sautéed ribeye steak and broccoli - I love tofu. The steak had good wok hay and very tender. I recommend this dish. Very traditional chinese restaurant. Service is OK, but the food speaks for itself. Everything was very tasty.
Under new management, The Kitchen's dim sum menu is truncated compared to other dim sum restaurants in the Burlingame/Millbrae area. The place was packed on a Monday after the Lunar New Year weekend as a lot of people don't have to work today. The food was OK. You can order the dim sum from a paper menu. There is a single dim sum cart that roams around. The confusing part is, some of the items we ordered from the paper menu were available on the cart only. The dim sum cart never came by our table. We had to ask one of the waiters for help to get the shrimp dumplings and sticky rice chicken for us. Total before tax and tip for two was $70. Service was excellent.
The food is excellent. Some dishes are very creative and different from the traditional Chinese cooking. Dinner is better lunch. The food alone is a 4-star but the service is only 2-star. The service is so bad that the will pick up the dishes while you are eating and hand you the check. Don't go on weekends, always go on weekdays if I want to get enough time to eat.
Food is good. But to me just the same as other favorite dim sum place. Waiter forgot to deliver one dish till we were almost done but marked it delivered on our sheet. Place is too noisy to hold a conversation.
This is a popular place to come for dim sum. It is somewhere in between "budget" and "high-end" dim sum for both quality and price. Overall we think it is a pretty good value. Although the restaurant is quite spacious It is still best to get there early even on weekdays to avoid a wait. For dim sum, The Kitchen uses an order form as opposed to other places that send the wait staff around with trays or carts. The order form style works okay for a couple people; I've wondered if ordering from trays and carts on the fly is easier for a larger group. The service staff has been attentive. However, more than once one of our dishes has either been quite late or didn't show up until we asked about it, so make sure that your order is complete. We have been disappointed with take-out service. We called on December 31 to confirm that we could get a take-out order on January 1, and the answer was "Yes". We asked if we should place the order in advance or order the next day, and the answer was "Order tomorrow". When we called the next day to place our order we were told, "Too busy, no take-out, bye."
First, food is very mediocre. I do not recommend the Shanghai dumplings here. Staff is friendly but service is disorganized. We had 4 people but only got 3 place settings. It took forever to get another plate and utensils, soy sauce, etc. It also takes a long time to get food. There was only one steam cart and one dessert cart. We had to wait to flag someone down to order. You also have to wait a long time to pay and leave even though there are people waiting for tables. Probably understaffed but the food is no better this time than when I came before the pandemic.
Food was bland, service was below expectations. Ask server to use a scissor to cut some buns in half, she told me to just use my hand to pull it apart. I know help is difficult to find these days, but it was like tough luck.... Guess I will try somewhere different for Dim Sum for now. Perhaps they just had a bad day, since I have been here before with no issues. Just disappointed ☹️
The food in this restaurant is very delicious. The siu mai is probably the best I have ever eaten, but the shrimp dumplings are the worst I have ever eaten because skin is broken. Others such as sesame balls, taro cakes, radish cakes, steamed aged orange skin short ribs and rice rolls are all delicious. But the service and dining environment are terrible. There are always people behind me and it is difficult to call the waiter. Saturday at 11:45 am , the wait time around 35 mins .
Food was not bad, but not good. Service was decent. Not the best place to grab a bite. I'd recommend you try other restaurants in the area.
This used to be my favorite restaurant. Today we went there and is totally no service. We ordered two steam rice. It’s taking forever to get it. We order twice and end up we never get it. Food quality is still OK and price is good. I don’t know what happened to the management.
The menu was not clear with details of ingredients. Unless you take someone who knows Mandarin, you basically can't communicate with most of them. The place was super busy and crowded. The only good thing was green tea and sesame balls. I ordered something and I got it very late when everyone in the group was about to leave/pack left over food. I wouldn't recommend it unless you don't care what food has inside.
I recently visited The Kitchen in Millbrae for some dim sum, and it was... just okay. The service was quick, which was a plus, but unfortunately, the food didn’t quite live up to expectations. The dim sum itself was fine—nothing special—just your standard offerings, though the selection was a bit limited.
Probably the worst time I had in the Bay Area sadly... I feel that when you go to Chinese dim sum establishment, they should make the two basic dishes well. Pork and shrimp dumpling and the taste and flavor was really missing. The noodle wrap Chinese donut rice noodle roll was an absolute miss! The donut in the center was undercooked and chewy, and the noodle was undercooked and grossly under cooked. Pineapple egg custard bun was the best of all the dishes. Second was the steam spare ribs. Cooked enough with the right amount of flavor. It did taste delicious! But that did not save the overall meal.
This restaurant mandates tipping. In the US, tipping is voluntary, and they seem worried you won't tip. The first time I paid, their machine malfunctioned and made me swipe my card again. As a result, my bank account showed two transactions, and both were successfully deducted. They could have used a void refund to immediately return the money, but they insisted on using the refund function, so it took two days for the money to arrive. I found this extremely inconvenient. Furthermore, the tableware also had some stains.
We found it so rude and disrespectful when the waiter at the Kitchen restaurant in Millbrae came to our table to tell us that the tips we left was a few dollars shy of 15%. It has to be 15% or more. We modified the tips to be 15% and left. He came by to pick up the revised check and laughed. The rest of the waiters cheered him on. This is disgusting. We’ll never return. I hope the owner sees this comment and know what they were doing, unless the owner too is part of it.
Avoid this resturant! If you have to, keep your receipt! They will steal your tips without your authorization. They include the 18% service fee in the bill, so I left the tip section as blank. But they still charged another 18% upon the food and service fee! If you don't want to be scammed, don't go there.
Food is decent but absolutely next to no service. We came in tonight to eat dinner and had to wait so long to have a waiter do anything for us. You literally have to flag them down to get attention. At the end, I gave a 8 percent tip ( I thought that was generous for the service that was provided). I was stopped by a waiter to questioned me why a low tip. I told him I tip base on the service I received! He looked upset. Won’t be coming back.
I have photo documentation of this transaction. Any attempt to charge more than the agreed amount will result in a bank dispute I have already paid a 10% tip What made this experience unacceptable was that the staff questioned me three times about the tip and did so in a judgmental manner, which felt like pressure rather than service. Tips are voluntary. Repeatedly confronting a customer about the amount, especially with a scolding tone is unprofessional and inappropriate, regardless of the type of restaurant. This behavior made me very uncomfortable and completely overshadowed the meal
