This is a classic new york diner. Feels like home every time you walk in. Ask for Gabrielle. He will always take the best care of you!
I've had breakfast at this cute cafe/diner a couple of times and have nothing but positive things to say! The omelettes, fresh fruit, potatoes, bacon, waffles are all very fresh. Service is on point and quick and the waiters are attentive. Highly recommend!
Was pleasantly surprised… Food here was very good and reasonably priced. And the french fries were absolutely perfect. Crunchy on the outside with good potato texture on the inside. Service was good, staff was friendly. I'll be back for sure.
I have been to this restaurant for almost 25 years as my best friend used to live around the corner and now I being my parents to enjoy some diner food, which is becoming less and less in Manhattan. I have never been disappointed with the food and much less the service. A great neighborhood institution.
Thank you Cafe 82, I had the most delicious Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner! It was good to the last bite and made my St. Patrick's Day Special!!
We had a delicious, stress-free, Thanksgiving from Café 82 (carryout - brought it home) We first had their Thanksgiving meal in 2020 when our regular plans were cancelled. Been ordering every Thanksgiving since - even if we had somewhere to go - just so we'd have leftovers the next day. This year we ordered even more. Everything was wonderful - from soup to dessert and in between. And I love that they let you get all dark/or all white meat. I don't think a fancy restaurant could have made it any tastier. (Maybe lose the maraschino cherry garnish tho) And the service was great. I had bought reusable shopping bags. They packed the food in them, - moving around some groceries "for balance" I stopped in yesterday to tsay how great the food was. I think the woman was bracing for a complaint... (the only time they got something wrong was that first order back in 2020. They gave us spinach instead of whatever vegetable we'd ordered. What a happy mistake! We've been eating their spinach ever since (and not just on Thanksgiving)
It was a scary rainy day in the windy apple I stumbled into cafe eight two at 5am soaking wet and hungry. The hostess smelled like warm cinnamon and hugged me before showing me to my seat. I ordered some of their famous jelly beans and cotton candy it was delicious I highly recommend stopping here and eating you won't be disappointed
I have been coming here with my family for 20 years. Best diner ever! Definitely have a cheeseburger
Cozy little spot to come after the theatre. Staff is friendly and the food is great. Got the pancakes, best I’ve tried so far.
Thanksgiving 2025: Just had 6 Thanksgiving meals delivered. SO good! I've been to fancier restaurants where the food was not the good. This was our 6th year ordering Thanksgiving from Café 82 ------- Thanksgiving 2020: I ordered 2 Thanksgiving meals for pick up/take out. We were so happy that they let us order all dark meat. The food was WONDERFUL! . Everything was really tasty! The soup, the turkey, the stuffing, the gravy, the potatoes, the vegetables, the rolls, the pie - all very, very good. They got one of the vegetable sides wrong - but the spinach (that came instead of string beans) was SO GOOD we didn't care. I think my husband was a little skeptical about a coffee shop Thanksgiving meal. Well, he LOVED IT! And the price was a lot less than some of the other coffee shops nearby. I called Café 82 to tell them how pleased we were. Thanksgiving 2024: We loved our Thanksgiving meal so much that we've ordered it every year - sometimes going right in the fridge for "leftovers" the next day - even if we were going somewhere for Thanksgiving. Today we got 6 meals delivered. SO good. Everyone loved everything. Our guests said they were skeptical about a diner Thanksgiving meal - but they loved it!
Cozy, comfortable, and welcoming. Cafe 82 is the definition of the neighborhood diner. They serve good food and coffee in a friendly relaxed environment. Plus, they use their own delivery folks and actually answer the phone. I love that they continue to thrive on the upper west side of Manhattan.
FIREEE its a cute little diner and the chocolate chip pancakes were SO GOOD, we got everything we needed quick and the servers were rly polite
Very great experience and service here. My husband and I stopped by to grab a bite before catching a movie. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and server. I had the Turkey Burger and he had the Tuna Salad triple decker sandwich—both very delicious. We will return especially when we’re in the area.
Great GF menu for my wife, she had delicious pancakes. I had the eggs Benedict, also superb.
The food is consistently good, wait staff is attentive. Typical diner setting but my opinion is that it is one of the best area diners. Had a excellent lunch with a visiting friend.
My wife and I found this place by looking on Google maps to find a cafe for breakfast near our hotel. From the minute we walked in we loved it. It is the typical American diner that we were trying to find, the service is great and food is top notch. Went there every day of our stay for breakfast before venturing out for the day to look at the usual tourist stuff. The staff got to know us so as we walked in we sat down and without asking for our drinks order they brought it over then we ordered breakfast. They seem to have a good local following as most of the clientele were locals and very friendly.
Woke up craving pancakes and found this gem! Fluffy buttermilk stacks, crispy bacon, and the friendliest service. The veggie omelet is stellar too. Now my weekend breakfast spot, worth the wait if there’s a line!
Food was great! I went for breakfast, Pancakes were tasty, everything was cooked to perfection. I’ll definitely be coming back.
One of the last best diners in the Upper West Side.
Ate supper there, last year and this year. Wonderful place. The service is excellent. The food hot and the salads large n fresh. A true Diner. Love this place while in Manhattan.
Been going there since the early 90’s. Has always been beyond awesome. You won’t find better food anywhere. Have had the same waiter Miguel the entire time. Zero issues to report. BTW Cafe 82 is kept super clean ALL the time.
This is my favorite diner in the city. I come here by myself, with a few or many friends. The place perfectly accomodates any kind of crowd, whether outside or inside. There’s plenty of choice in the menu, and food is delicious considering the good price. I’m celiac and they have a gluten free menu. Their gluten free food is safe from cross-contamination. This place is my go-to. What makes it special is the personnel as well as it being community-based. Every time I go, I see the “usuals” and it’s been a pleasure to become one myself. The personnel will welcome you back every time and make you feel home. They are efficient and kind. Most of all, they remember how I want my coffee and prepare one for me even before I ask for it. I’ve now been coming here regularly for 2 years and I highly recommend you try it!
Amazing lunch! I got the Cobb salad and my husband got the Ruben with corned beef and both were huge and sooo good. Service was quick, coffee was great. So happy we stopped here today !
Been going to Cafe 82 regularly since the mid 90's. I still have the same waiter Miguel. The place is kept constantly super clean. Food is always beyond awesome!!!! I have zero issues to report.
This place is awesome. The food was delicious, the place was spotless, the staff were friendly, efficient, and attentive. Top all that of with reason able prices and you have a pleasurable dining experience that is truly rare. We place to return - often. I give Cafe 82 my strongest recommendation.
Absolutely the best customer service I have ever experienced. No doubt would be coming back. Took the order via grubhub and even labeled each meal with the persons name under the special instructions. Didn’t even ask for that. Dealt with 60+ orders phenomenally.
One of my favorite places in NYC! Great breakfasts. The servers are all business, no slacking or insincerity here - they're very attentive and quick. And the food is amazing, with generous portions. The French toast made with challah bread was some of the best I've had, anywhere. We got lox with a bagel and mistakenly figured it'd be the usual - thinly sliced and not quite enough lox, but as seen in the attached picture, it was a pretty significant cutlet of salmon. Can't wait to eat here again!
Best Diner on the UWS, no doubt about it! Great breakfast especially! Many healthful options including egg white omelets and fresh fruits. Try the fresh muffins! Comfy booths inside with a counter too, if you like. Outdoor sidewalk seating is available year round, too! Take-out is available. Plus they have their own delivery staff. Good fresh coffee! A popular lunch and dinner spot too for everything from burgers to grilled cheese. Greek specialties too. Multi-national staff is always highly efficient and courteous!
I came for the gluten free menu and found it to be even more extensive than I imagined. What I love is that Cafe 82 is a regular diner with all its charm and also has GF options, including the chocolate chip pancakes I enjoyed yesterday! They were delicious, as was my husband's gluten free corned beef sandwich.
One of the best gluten free menu i had!!! The food was amazing! The service was excellento they been so nice and i had so much fun to come over and over again to the same place in my vacation!!! Every morning i hade different breakfast and it was sooo good every time! Also the home made gluten free pasta is sooo good! The prices been great! I will come back next trip for sure!!!!
I have just the best time here! The service is so courteous and on the ball. The waiters work together to make sure all of the diners' needs are taken care of. The atmosphere of the restaurant is great, very comfortable for solo diners like me who can either dine left alone or make new friends, whatever strikes our moods for the day. A diverse and entertaining population of local residents who visit multiple times a week can always be relied upon to be there. The food is fantastic. It is perfect. If I ask for eggs over medium, those eggs will for damn sure be OVER MEDIUM. This means the world to me. A couple days ago I went and tried the chicken parmesan. It was legit enough food for three people! I could not believe my good fortune when that feast was laid before me. It was a thing of effing beauty. Upon realizing what was happening to me, I literally rubbed my hands together and then took photos so I could cherish the memory, lol. The quality of that chicken parmesan could not have been better! Gaaahhhh!
Delicious! Very kid friendly. My son loved the pancakes with strawberries.
Great breakfast options for my gluten-free partner and good things for everyone else. I look forward to going again as the place was lovely and the food was just as good. Attentive service lifted the experience as well.
Ive been going to Cafe 82 for over 20 years! Always a great experience. Breakfast and Lunch has always been awesome. And the staff is efficient and friendly!
Classic no frills diner thats open early and late. Turkey club and steak & eggs are good. Definitely a neighborhood spot.
I love calves liver and there only a view restaurants that have it on the menu. My friend had the biggest chicken pot pie he ever had and he loved it.
A true Original NYC Diner through and through... Your treated like family as soon as you walk in as Sarah greets and seats you.. With Gabrial set and ready to take your order with warmth and personality... 10 Out of 10.....
I had breakfast and dinner here on my recent trip. The open-faced hot turkey sandwich was JUST what I needed after a long day of traipsing around the city. The French toast and scrambled eggs were great, and I don't know what brand of coffee they use, but it was SO good. The staff was great, and there were a lot of regulars there, which is always a good sign. I have another trip coming up soon, and I'll be sure to visit!
This was my first visit, and it was a good one. I got eh cheeseburger deluxe. The burger, fries, and onion rings were delicious. My sister ordered home fries, bacon and scrambles eggs. She said it was delicious as well. The place is small and tight, but the staff were nice. We didn’t have to wait and the food came out quickly, and it was hot.
Do not remember last time in a NY Cafe this was great. I had a Reuben sandwich with pastrami instead of corned beef . It was delicious, so we're the fries , coleslaw and the pickle . The parents had cheese ravioli with a salad. Both were perfect serving size. No complaints from them. Excellent servers, kept my coffee cup filled. Oh and mother had NY Cheesecake for dessert. It was REAL NY Cheesecake. She completely enjoyed it.
Cafe Eighty 82 is a great spot for breakfast or lunch. It was packed at 11:00am on a Sunday, but we were seated within 5 minutes (table for 2). Food: The food was pretty fantastic. I made a classic breakfast sandwich, which came out really fresh. The fries have a great crisp on them. The eggs florentine and breakfast potatoes were also great. The menu is a little smaller than other diners, but a nice split of breakfast and lunch. Service: The service here is quick. The wait staff is really friendly and attentive. There’s not a great place to stand when you enter so it seems like the prioritize getting you seated quickly. Atmosphere: Cafe Eighty Two is a classic bustling diner. Quick service with no frills great food and plenty of coffee.
Had a nice breakfast and the service was really friendly.
My significant other and I stopped in to have a little breakfast before starting our day. My order was very simple coffee, bacon and Belgian waffle with fresh fruit. The waffle came out burned with fresh food on top of it. I was offended that I was still served The waffle so I notified the waiter immediately he returned it. And bought me out the correct order. Which I had no complaints about after the fact. So in my opinion maybe this was just my experience because that was my first time eating at that establishment. When you order be a little more aware of what's being bought to you.
I like the atmosphere. At lunch around noon mid-week. I was seated immediately and the food came out in short order. The service was a tad slow but I chalk it up to it being lunch rush. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice, low key lunch.
Very good location and a variety of items to order. You need vaccination card and mask when you enter the establishment. We ordered a short stack of pancakes which were pretty good, enjoyed every bite. Customer service is great, they checked if we needed coffee a few times while we were eating and once we were done they were quick with getting our check. I appreciate how quick they were.
The atmosphere is a diner, so it is that. The service and staff there are amazing. The food ranges greatly so having everything perfect is difficult but they do a great job and the daily specials actually do change. Definitely worth a stop.
One of the local diners in the neighborhood and one I go to for that diner fix. Favourites include the chicken pot pie during the winter months and the turkey dinner when I want to gorge on wonderfully roasted turkey meat. The turkey melt is excellent too. The staff are very nice and friendly, what more can you ask for in a diner?
We arrived with a party of 11 (which included 7 children). The staff quickly placed us in 2 booths and provided highchairs for the babies. The orders were taken quickly and delivered in no time. The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. Honestly, we were there about an hour with such a large party and we left full and happy.
The pancakes are great. I enjoyed them a lot. There is not a lot of space inside and it seemed like the menu prices were not accurate because what I ordered should have been around $35 and I ended up with a $50 bill. Don't know how that happened, but it's all good. I would recommend this place.
Simply: Diner feel, diner menu, diner food. That said, they do have a separate 4-page gluten free menu that, surprisingly, offers a wide variety of GF options (not just salad) all the way up to dessert. Service is very good and we seemed to have more than one person tending to our table. The inside is small and crowded, but they do offer outside seating. If you have a gluten allergy, definitely a place to add to your list.
We had take out breakfast from here for a few days which was great and the guy at the bar/kitchen was so lovely, so we decided to eat in for breakfast another day - although the food was still great, the woman on the register and the man serving us were really not friendly - a bit disappointing. But a huge thank you to the other waiter who was so lovely.
We decided to stop here for a nice early dinner after the Jim gaffigan show. The food was amazing and it didn’t take long at all. One huge complaint I do have is the waiter was high in age and wasn’t great at hearing anything we were saying, he never offered drinks, and we waiting quite a while for our check. The French onion soup was TO DIE FOR!
Decent diner. Outdoor seating available. We were seated indoors (our preference) fairly quickly but served fairly slowly. I like coffee right away, not ten minutes after being seated. Food and coffee were pretty good. Typical diner choices. Tiny bathrooms. Probably worthy of three stars, but it gets one extra because it’s a dying breed but still hanging in there.
Cafe 82 was the first food stop my chum and I made on Saturday morning during our hike up Manhattan (which means we were pretty hungry when we showed up). We didn't have a giant, elaborate meal here, but like any respectable diner it had the food we needed it to have, and kept us chugging up the island. We showed up around 10:30am on an incredibly humid day. The plan was to get a little sustenance in lieu of a "real" lunch we intended to have further uptown. The place was bustling, with both the outdoor and indoor seating pretty packed, though we were seated right by the entrance inside quickly. Unlike the prior 100 blocks or so, this was clearly a locals spot, with a lot of older patrons who clearly have lived in the area for years. Good vibe. Both of us ordered two eggs and toast, and my chum also got a side of potatoes for good measure. Everything came out fairly quickly (a diner like this is a well-oiled machine) and drama-free. It's pretty hard to mess up eggs and toast. Coupled with a huge appetite, this was always going to be a tasty snack. Was it the best eggs and toast ever? Eh, probably not. (I like my scrambled eggs a little fluffier, and both of us were mildly saddened that the toast wasn't pre-cut into triangles, which I promise you I did not actually take points off for - I'm high maintenance but not THAT high maintenance). But everything was devoured, as it should have been. The service was solid. This is the kind of place that has an army of people roaming around so even in the chaos it's easy to hail someone down for assistance. It didn't take long to grab the check and continue our trek. And the added bonus of a legit diner safely tucked away from the tourist traps? We got a meal that was less than $15 per person - I'll take that every time.
Gluten-free pancakes were horrible!! Tasted like wall paper paste and were sticky inside. The manager did offer me a GF waffle but it wasn't any better. I am giving 3 stars because my husband had the steak and eggs and enjoyed it. They didn't offer to take it off the bill
I love this place. Have been coming here for years...since childhood. But our main waiter was grumpy and I was getting racist vibes only from him. He didn't look at me when I had my and up and looked at him as he walked passed. I guess he was mad I got a ginger ale from another friendly waiter because I needed ginger ale for my stomach. I originally ordered a half and half for my daughter and myself. He did not know what that was. Half lemonade and iced tea mixed together should not take 40 mins to make and cost more than a fountain beverage what did they have to do buy the lemons?! Anyway the rest of the staff was very nice and helpful. Pricing could be a little better but the quality of food is yummy and reliable.
While this can be a decent place to get a coffee and basic breakfast food, like eggs and toast, as with any diner, the food beyond that is not very good. Nor are the dessert items. The last time I was there, I ordered a chocolate chip cookie to accompany my coffee, and what I got was this stale slab of lame cookie mass wrapped in plastic. I asked the waiter to take it back because it looked not edible, and although he took it back and didn’t charge me for it, he disputed my characterization of it. He said, “just say you don’t want it, don’t say that it’s stale.” But it was, and I don’t see why he seemed offended. My dad was a regular at this place, so it certainly has its charm for some, especially senior folks, who you can often see dining there. But in this neighborhood, you can do better when it comes to coffee and pastries and basic brunch fare.
Staff are friendly and helpful. The food is a little heavy, greasy and lacking in flavor to our foreign palates, but that is what most of the local customers want and are used to. So this is a good place for a real New York lunch experience
Had an omelette that came with potatoes and toast, unfortunately the omelette and potatoes were super bland. Son had a Virginia ham and cheese sandwich, which was crazy thick and tasted great. Chocolate milk is made with hersheys syrup and the serving size is huge! It was alright overall, but I probably won’t go back.
Food was cold and miscolored. Wait wasn't long, but was awkward because there was no waiting area. It was also overpriced.
Decent service and comfortable seating space, but the food seems just okay here. The quality seems low, but I guess comparing the prices to other brunch spots nearby and Manhattan diners, it makes sense. I still wouldn't pay the price for what we got though. We got pancakes (regular and chocolate chip) and they were just alright. They were thin and floppy (not very fluffy, but they weren't dry). The chocolate chips in the chocolate chip pancakes saved the flavor, but I can imagine the plain pancakes being unappetizing/unsatisfying to eat. It looks unapparent from the outside, but there was a good amount of chocolate chips embedded near the center and inside of the pancakes. They provide a lot of packets of craft syrup and butter. Unfortunately, maple syrup is $2 per packet. I've also tried some of their toasted homemade muffins, which were alright. The corn muffin was a bit dry, and the blueberry muffin was a tad bit too sweet for me. I feel like I need to try some of their other dishes like omelettes or eggs benedict to fairly comment on their food quality, but I don't know if I'd come here for that when they don't appeal too much. I would say the quality is comparable to City Diner and Manhattan Diner. Other notes: - The handwritten check can be a little hard to discern. - We go up to the cash register to pay - They have a separate gluten-free menu
Food is really bad. Do not order the eggs Benedict with mystery sauce. Definitely do not order the corn beef hash which tasted like they just poured it out of the can. When we told the waiter that the corn beef hash was bad he insisted on saying 4x that I was the first ever to complain dismissing my comment. Not good service and really bad food.
I stopped by for dinner with my two nieces and I had a terrible experience!! I was lead toward the back past all the empty tables in the main dining area. Then I was asked 3 seperate times for our order when we had just sat down seconds before. I felt rushed and unwanted. When I ordered my burger I made the mistake of asking for a cheese burger with no cheese and was sternly corrected by the waiter. Then when my niece ordered her salad she asked for avocado in it and it seemed her request annoyed the waiter. No one came to ask if we needed anything during our dinner and at the end when I asked for the check, I was told I was going to be charged 3 extra dollars because I was going to pay by card. I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with this visit as I've been here several times alone with just my husband to grab a quick bite after the movies and those visits were great! On those visits we were well attended to and the wait staff were very friendly. I am absolutely taking my review to Yelp.
Just had an insane experience here. My girlfriend and I went and asked if we could be seated at a booth so we could sit next to each other, which the waiter said was fine. Her and I weren't super hungry so we just wanted to split a burger and coke. They then told us we had to order more if we wanted to sit at the booth... We did, and when my birger arrived I asked if I could get some onions to put on it. To which the waiter informed me that onions would be extra. Overpriced food with rude staff.
I will start off by saying the service I received here was exceptional. Service receives 5 Stars but that’s where my positive experience ends. I came here for lunch with my father and toddler after a visit to the children’s museum around the corner. The prices were high, the food mediocre and the menu limited. I asked them for a children’s menu for my toddler and was told they don’t have one. I was directed to their appetizers which for the most part gave me a choice of chicken fingers, Buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks. I ended up ordering the chicken fingers and there were way too many for my two year old, two would have been sufficient and the meat was beyond questionable - it reminded me of cafferteria food. The lack of a kids menu with thoughtful portions and well rounded meals was a big miss. While the service I received was good and the interior of the restaurant was clean everything else about this restaurant fell well below expectations.
This used to be my favorite diner. I love diner food and eat at diners all over the City. I would go out of my way to visit this one. The wait staff is great, but the food quality is now lacking. The last two times I've visited, they have served me cheap, fatty bacon like you would get at a Waffle House. This never used to be the case. It was nothing but strips of fat. Gross and inedible. If you're not going to order bacon, this is still the best diner on the UWS.
It’ll be sad when this place eventually closes, but it won’t be surprising when it does. Have been several times over the years, and each time I hope things have changed for the better. However every time I immediately remember why I don’t come back often. It’s very expensive for what it is, the food isn’t great, and the staff is rude. I want this to be my go to morning place but I always feel like they want me out as quickly as possible. It’s too bad because there aren’t many old school diners like this around this neighborhood any longer.
Not a great experience for lunch today. We each ordered Reuben sandwiches, which were served open face, and were on the dry side. The pickles and French fries were good. No refills on iced tea, I would have appreciated knowing that before ordering. Very slow service, and waiter had a disinterested attitude, probably why it took 10 minutes to get our check after asking for it.
I was here Last night with my family and I can't let you that I never was more disappointed in food then last night. I usually go to Neptune Diner in Astoria and the food there is amazing, good and fresh but last night here it was like left overs it was disgusting. I took my brother here because he is visiting from Europe but never again. I will NOT recommend anyone to go here for a great food because they would not get it here.
Cafe 82 is a disappointment in every sense of the word. From the uninspired and flavorless cuisine to the abrasive and impolite staff, dining at this establishment is a forgettable experience. The abrasiveness started as soon as we walked in. My wife wanted to leave right away. I convinced her to stay since our daughter was quite hungry. I should have listened. As a therapist of color, I understood that the abrasiveness might be cultural. It was not. What culture is rude to a 1yr old and an elderly lady? I observed a server berate an elderly woman trying to understand her bill. She was trying to understand why there was a surcharge. They charge extra if you pay with a credit card and this is not clearly explained. Furthermore, the menu lacked creativity and the dishes served were devoid of any real character or taste. The focus is not on providing a flavorful experience, but on the convenience of mass production. Which I question. Ask yourself, have you ever eaten at a restaurant, ordered french toast, and gotten a single slice of Pepperidge Farm bread? In truth, the real tragedy of Cafe 82 is how its staff conducts themselves. The employees were rude and lacked any sense of hospitality. Their demeanor was unprofessional, and it was evident that they were not passionate about their work or providing a positive experience for their customers. If you are from NYC, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. If you are visiting and you need a quick meal, please know that this is not indicative of the NYC dining experience.
None of the food was satisfying. The steak from steak and eggs was overcooked and not seasoned. Salt and pepper wouldn't help for this but it helped slightly with the wet scrambled eggs. The toast was dry and cold in the sense of it was toasted an hour prior and was just sitting there. The bacon, egg, cheese bagel was not filling. The hashbrowns had a few crispy pieces but as a whole was not delicious. The service was not the best especially being there was only one other table there.
I went to this establishment with my daughter and grand daughter. I was not pleased one bit. The individual working outside was not friendly at all. We sat there for a while before the waiter came out after we said we are ready to order. The close menus obviously didn't give them a clue. Two others that were seated 10 minutes later were attended to before us. The waiter seen bothered to serve us. He not once asked us if we wanted a drink with our meal. The other individual came to refill our water glasses and spilled water on the table and didn't bother to clean it up. Never again will I go there.
Just left Cafe Eighty Two and my experience was so awful I had to write a review. I have been here twice, the first time to pick-up and the second time to dine in. My first experience I was pushing my stroller in the cafe to pick up food and a lady came running out yelling, "no strollers allowed!" I kindly told her I was there to pick up and she had me wait outside and it was 30 degrees outside. Annoying but not a huge deal -and the thing was my toddler has a two year-old's undeveloped palette and he liked their thin greasy slices of french toast and sugar juice covered strawberries. Thinking maybe it was just a one off experience we went back today, about a month after the first incident. Today I made sure to leave my stroller outside and brought my toddler in. Immediately I could feel they were not happy I had a child. I didn't get a hello or anything, I was motioned to take a table. An older gentleman with grey hair and black glasses (who had also been the one to motion) came over to take our order. At this point my toddler who hasn't said a word yet, has pulled out a few of the sugar packets and is stacking them (not opening, just stacking ) the man gets super upset, snatches all the sugar packets off the table and brings them to the next table and starts reorganizing them and we haven't even received a hello yet (to be sure when we arrived at the table they were not organized to begin with). He is now audibly huffing and puffing so loud you would think my child just had an accident in the middle of the restaurant and he's been made to clean it up. My kid is now scared, staring at him and I am so uncomfortable I probably should have just left but I didn't want to make a scene. After his dramatic display about the sugar, he asks what we want. I say I would like french toast with scrambled eggs and side of strawberries. He gets upset again because I didn't point to my which French toast and there are two options on the menu. At this point it's taking everything not to pay and walk out on him. He takes our order then goes back to the bar and starts shovelling his own breakfast into his mouth. Minutes later, without washing his hands, he comes to toss our food down. As expected it is well below average diner food, which is fine for my two year old. Long story short, if you have kids (even the most pleasant) DO NOT take them here. If you like good food also do not eat here. I easily could have been a great customer as I live only two blocks away but I will never come to this place again.
Mediocre food , dirty everything down to stained menues they refuse to wipe. Really fail to see this place's allure !
My girlfriend and I went into Cafe Forty Two on Sunday after spending a wonderful day on the UWS. We were greeted by a man walking towards the exit. We were shown to our seats and shortly after the busser brought us water. Unfortunately, we sat for another 10 minutes, in the not so busy restaurant before anyone else came over; so we decided to leave. Although, I did notice the short pudgy waiter tending to other customers - just not us. They not like us!!
Came here tonight for dinner with my son. I ordered fish and chips and my son ordered a chicken deluxe sandwich. It came with honey mustard on the side. The honey mustard was in a little plastic container that they give you when they deliver. My fish and chips was one skinny large piece of fish filet that tasted like it was frozen. It was horrible. The tartar sauce was not fresh, it was in a packet. I took a few bites of the fish and left the rest. My son’s chicken was so over cooked that he choked on it and coughed it up after the second bite. He couldn’t eat anymore. I didn’t want to make a stink about it so I paid the bill, plus tip and left. Our waiter never asked us why we left all the food and why my son was choking. I will never come back here again!
Refused to seat us at a large booth despite the diner being almost completely empty. The staff were extremely rude. Do not go here.
Please please find another breakfast place. The food was absolutely disgusting. I ordered an eggs Benedict thinking it was the easiest dish to make since you can’t really screw it up, but I was completely wrong. The sauce almost looked like neon orange that tasted like thick water. When I ordered the corned beef hash, I felt like I was eating cat food off a plate. Super disappointed and when I complained to the staff, they gave each other these rude looks to each other about my complaints. No apologies or anything. Terrible and I’m never coming back.
Staff was extremely rude. I stopped in with a friend while we were in the area. I quickly used the bathroom before checking the menu, but then decided to look around the neighborhood first. Two staff members literally ran after me in the street, saying I had to pay for the bathroom. I hadn’t realized that was their policy, but I immediately agreed to go back inside and pay. Instead of handling it politely, the staff member typed in a random charge and told me “nothing is free” in a very condescending way. The attitude was unnecessary and uncomfortable. Definitely won’t be returning.
Easily the rudest staff I’ve ever dealt with. I ordered, sat down, and was there for maybe 6 minutes—mind you, the place was basically empty except for me and a couple sitting in another spot. Then this tall guy/server randomly brings me the check and asks if I’m done (I wasn’t). I paid, kept working on my breakfast and playing with my laptop, and a few minutes later, a shorter guy comes over and tries to take my food—even though my cup was still almost full. I told him I was still eating, and then literally three minutes later, he’s back again asking if I’m finished. Spent $28 on a low-quality breakfast and barely got 20 minutes of peace. Ironically, they did not ask the other couple who were sitting if they’re done. They were just sensitive with me checking emails on my laptop 😂 The whole vibe was just off.
