Popped in to have lunch and it was the best meal I've ever had in North America. We had the seafood gumbo for starter and then grilled salmon with candied yams and cornmeal stuffing for the entree and it was fingerlicking good. The cherry on the top was the delicious peach cobbler. It's their number 1 dessert and we can totally see why. The customer service was great, the waitress was very helpful and welcoming. We would give this place more than 5 stars if that were possible. Will definitely be back on my next visit to NYC.
The food is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! I had chicken and ribs, mac & cheese and greens. Lawd this is the only place that can compete with my mother's cooking shhhhhhh! Lol next time I'm I'm in the area I'll definitely stop back by in a hurry. My only regret is that I didn't purchase the book of recipes😒 but I'll definitely look for it online. Give it a try, you won't regret it. Soul food at its best!!!!!! I went back again July 2024 and I got the book. Same great food, atmosphere and service! AMAZING!!!
Do yourself a favor and choose them! A+++ I ordered delivery for my mother's 69th birthday and even asked for a little extra cornbread on the side and they added a nice portion of cornbread and also added a candle for her birthday and wrote a little note that said "Happy Birthday Mom." It's really these little (BIG) things that go a long way! I'd be remised not to mention the food - everything was seasoned so good and cooked to perfection!! I was so thankful I chose this place and was blow away but not just the food but customer service too - Thank you so much - this memory will be cherished by the whole family - especially my Mom!
I called to clarify my Groupon and spoke with the sweetest woman. When I got there, I had difficulty getting my Groupon voucher to open; they were so amenable, helpful & understanding. The food is out-of-this-world delicious. I'd swear my Grandma made it all. I don't usually eat fried food, but the fried catfish is not heavy at all; the batter is nice and light. Oh, my stomach (and taste buds) are SO happy!
I love the baked turkey wings just like my mom used to make Never saw them on any other soul food restaurant menu Good variety of appetizer and entree/ sides To choose from- Ribs are great too Took the desert home. Delicious sweet potato pie and peach cobbler Small cozy dining-in area feels like eating in grandmas or mom's home with other guests
Walked in and it was like I left NY and was in New Orleans. The waiter and staff laid on the charm. Then I looked at the menu and MIND BLOWN! A legit no compromise southern menu right here in NYC. We tried the jerk wings, ribs, oxtail and banana pudding and everything was INCREDIBLE! This place is next level!!!
Literally by far, the best and freshest AUTHENTIC soul food you’ll find in New York City. The food is always fresh, the chicken is always crispy, the turkey wings are always flavorful, the Mac and cheese is always made with love and the collard greens are always made with southern expertise. The desserts are absolutely amazing and the staff is extremely polite and accommodating! Please don’t miss out on this amazing restaurant. If you’re visiting NYC and need some soul food made with love, please visit! Enjoy!
Every dish I've had from here has been cooked with so much love & flavor. As southerner in the city, it's the best place I have found to complete those soul food cravings. From the baked chicken to the ribs to the yams to the delicious punch, trust me when I say: it's all damn good.
Very nice, cozy atmosphere. Food is excellent. We had Ribs, Fried Chicken, Peas & Rice, Macaroni & Cheese, Potatoe Salad and Sweet Potatoes. The prices are very reasonable. Service is excellent. Recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys eating good food.
I’m from NC, so I know about Southern and comfort food. The food at Miss Mamies was amazing and the service was excellent. Kenny (our server & bartender) provided extraordinary customer service and was a joy to be around. Please do yourself a favor and experience delicious meals that won’t cost you an arm and leg!
My experience at this place has been nothing but the best. Lot's of home down loving from the staff and in the food. Staff very attentive but not annoying. I've had the meatiest ribs falling off the bone melt in your mouth experience right here at Miss Maime"s. I've had the smother chicken Mmm gone. Any of the sides that you put with it is superb. The ambiance always good. Noise is low unless your singing to the tunes of the R&B they play while your dining. Every song they play I know. It reminds you of back in the day when music had meaning. I plan to visit today. Don't know what I'm gonna eat but I know I'm gonna enjoy the beat of the music while I decide.
This restaurant is a New York treasure. It feels like having a home cooked meal at a warm relative’s home, rather than at a restaurant. The food is delicious - can’t get enough of the catfish, collards, and cabbage, not to mention the rum punch. Gracious welcome and service as well.
We ordered in from Miss Mamie’s for the first time and I am so glad we did. The grilled BBQ shrimp were perfectly done and the sauce was fantastic. My fiancé loved the smothered chicken. The sides were all great, and the cornbread wasn’t overly sweet. Will definitely be ordering again!
I went in to see if they had biscuits (they don't) but I was told that their cornbread is unparalleled, and after eating some of it, I have to agree. It's got the perfect texture and sweetness levels. And on top of that, it tasted freshly made. I'll definitely go back to try other vegetarian dishes that they may have!
The food here was amazing! Without naming any other known “soul food” spots close by, this by far was the best so far! This was the 4th on my list and I’m very impressed! And I’m not usually a reviews kind of guy. They really season the food right, flavorful, WITHOUT over-salting, and all the sides I had, which included stuffing, yams, fries, cornbread, and plantains, were all great compliments to my entrees. For a guy who grew up in Mississippi and Louisiana, and has been looking for a good spot, Miss Mamie’s DEFINITELY gets my stamp of approval! Thank you!
I wanted turkey wings. They were out. I tried the ribs as an alternative. BOY BOY BOY. The ribs were delicious! Not sure who the cook was ... but a gold medal needs to be issued. *The piano is tuned & quite playable.
I've been meaning to visit this place since I saw it on the food network a few years ago and was not disappointed. The setting is inviting and makes you feel as if you are about to enjoy a home cooked meal. I had a refreshing fresh squeezed lemonade and ordered the Miss Mamie's sampler so that I could try a variety of there menu items and I'm glad I did. The North Carolina rib was fall of the bone tender and jam packed with flavor. The grilled shrimp were a good size and paired well with the mashed potatoes and the spinach. The plate also came with a piece of the fried chicken which had a crispy/crunchy exterior with a subtle hint of spice and the dark meat was juicy and tasty. I took home a slice of the #1 peach cobbler in NYC and I can say that I will definitely be coming back to this place.
The white tablecloths and large windows looking out at Harlem perfectly compliment my favorite meal here- catfish, collards cooked just right, and cornbread. Every time I'm here I get plates to go for family or friends. The staff is friendly and very kind, and my favorite part is being greeted by Miss Mamie in her beautiful outfits. This is my comfort space.
This place is a stable of the neighborhood. I have been eating here since I was a teenager so that’s about 20 years. The food hasn’t changed and is delicious as it was when I first ate here. I recommend dining (take out is good too!) so you can experience the mac and cheese fresh out the oven.
This place is incredible, 25+ years doesn’t surprise me. Everything was perfect. Can’t wait to come back.
Once again they exceeded my expectations! Had a small graduation dinner with friends and family. Ordered smothered chicken, cat fish strips, collard greens, salad and cornbread and not only was I supposed by the price for 12 meals. It was enough food to feed everyone twice and take home food! Everyone enjoyed! Hospitality was also 5/5 would definitely continue to go back! This was by far the BEST smothered chicken and collard greens I ever had from a restaurant. THEN I had the lemon pound cake and peach cobbler. BOYYYYYY!!!!! It was so good it almost taste like apple cobbler. Customer service was great! And we got our food when they were closing and it was still fresh!! I love that! Highly recommend.
Hidden gem Michelin Bib Gourmand Food is as fresh as it gets Flavors are great Prices are reasonable Decor makes you feel like you are in a southern home Got a chance to meet the nice owner (woman owned business) and learn more about the restaurant which was incredible. No wonder this place has been around for 26 years Will be coming back again
Just ate here today with my family, we will certainly be back. The food was delicious! I had the catfish, and it was cooked perfectly. The yams and Mac and cheese sooooo good. Everyone enjoyed their food, even my mother, who is a very picky eater. It's a cozy spot. The waitress was so attentive and was extremely nice. This will definitely be a spot we check out when we come to the city. I will definitely recommend it. The best soulfood restaurant I've been to thus far, and I've been to many.
Walking in the place is well laid out. Airy with beautiful photographs hanging in the wall. Ordered the fried chicken plate that comes with two sides (cabbage & Mac & cheese) then a piece of cornbread. The fried chicken was actually really good. More flavor than a so-called place I tried a while back. Mac and cheese was yummy and not too cheesy (sorry). The cabbage was delicious, and the little one enjoyed it. Would go back to try their other items. Oh and the young lady that helped me, such a beautiful and pleasant woman.
Everyone who worked there was very nice and quick to serve me and the misses. We enjoyed the fried chicken, corn bread, and fish! Definitely recommend!!!
Love love love Miss Mamie’s. From now on, when I have the time, this will be my treat to myself. I had the fried chicken, with greens & fried plantains— deliciously spiced. Everyone around me was ordering short ribs, fried catfish & candied yams, and they were all audibly satisfied. I will be back, as often as I can. All the staff were welcoming and warm, even though they seemed to be short-staffed or training someone new.
I had completely forgotten about Miss Mamie's restaurant and I'm so glad I returned to have their good soul food. For starters, try the homemade iced tea and her famous seafood gumbo. I promise you will thank me later. Hands down the best I have tasted. I always have fried chicken, mac and cheese, and cabbage. Comes with a warm piece of cornbread. My group had a variety of entrees including the sampler and ordered all of the desserts for the table. They all raved about their food and the desserts. The service and Miss Norma Jean are amazing! I just love Miss Norma Jean and I'm glad I returned back to a place I always loved so much. Pick up a book on the way out and have Miss Norma Jean sign it for you! Just a lovely woman. I'm definitely going to go back this week.
I ordered a delivery, and I'm very impressed. There's quite a few soul food places in the area, but I haven't liked any of them, although they have higher rating. Food is delicious. String beans are tender yet crunchy and garlicky. Potato salad has just right amount of mayo. Beef ribs are saucy but the sauce isn't overpowering. You can still taste the tender meet. Great food overall Oh and they made sure to wrap the to go box with a plastic wrap so the sauce and juices didn't leak through. Thanks!
This place just tastes like a home away from home. Mamas love in every bite. I suggest the sampler for a unique flavor profile of all flavors you can get. Audible sounds of flavor from my friends as we ate. A special place with romantic New York charm
I discovered a gem here and will become a frequent customer. The workers all displayed friendly attitudes. The meal options, affordable costs and excellent service create a positive experience. The food had just-made quality and excellent flavor. People speak truth about Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too - it's genuinely excellent.
We thoroughly enjoyed delicious catering from Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too for a the launch of a new perfume. Little did we know we were in for such a surprise to actually meet the iconic former fashion model Norma Jean Darden, known for her role in "The Battle of Versailles" battle between French and American fashion designers, and subsequent documentary and book prior to founding her restaurant, Miss Mamie’s Spoonbread Too, which catered our event. What really helped our team was the helpful thoughtful discussion we had prior to the event, to be sure our selection would delight guests. The catfish bites, jerk wingettes, deviled eggs, fruit kebobs, and brownies were perfect and delivered with care.
Catfish was super CRUNCHY, moist and succulent - juices literally burst out when you bite into it. They cut them into thin pieces and do something to them to make them ultra juicy yet also ultra crunchy. I just came back from Atlanta and no catfish down there compares to Miss Mamie's. Mac and cheese, yams and collard greens were all delicious. This place stands apart from the other soul food restaurants in NYC for quality. I am now switching to Miss Mamie's for my usual catfish meal each weekend.
The experience was super good, and the food was super taste. The owner was so sweet to greet our table and check in on us. Thank you for such an awesome experience. Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Sampler with three veggies (spinach, cabbage, and potatoe salad). Fish sandwich with French fries. Peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream.
I came from Jersey just to try this place. I ordered the smothered chicken, macaroni and cheese, yams and banana pudding. It was absolutely delicious and worth the trip. I forgot to get the server/host name (very low cut hair and an accent) but she was so polite and had such a great sense of humor. I came with my daughter for her birthday and I told her that I wanted to tip the waitress well bc she was so awesome and polite despite handling Uber eats orders and the people inside on her own. I thanked her and complimented her personally. It was definitely an enjoyable experience and I will hopefully be back again 🫴🏾❤️
This place is the epitome of Southern cuisine best in the entire neighborhood or New York for that matter. If you’re going to judge southern food off of anything, the collar greens, here are the best I’ve ever had in my entire life. I will never be able to experience eating collard greens in any other restaurant or location the same again because they are the top of the pedestal of flavor to compare too. Just blown away buy the food and flavor this small place produces. The staff is wonderful and the speed of the dishes are served quick and hot and with the best smile and vibe you can ask for. I can’t wait to come back!! This is a must experiment NyC location!! Taking the # Number 1 spot for NYC Must Eat locations.
I truly enjoyed the experience I had at Spoonbread! The ice tea was delicious (per the menu!). I was in love with the cornbread hash and candid yams, a surprise treat and flavor that was new and exciting. I had the platter to sample a few sides and the shrimp, ribs and chicken (🙌🙌 - pictured below). The waiter was helpful and appreciate their willingness to let us stay a little late to get a few sides and dessert to go! Also, I thought it was very cute that the staff sang happy birthday to some other guests that were having dinner next to our table.
Finding a African american restaurant on the upper west side of NYC is like looking for a needle in a pin stack. I think this is literally the only one. I was passing through her for a client who swears by their food. He’s a older white guy who if not for him I would have missed out on the best tasting banana pudding I’ve had In memory. It’s my favorite desert and theirs had some southern black magic mixed in it. I wish I had purchased two servings. Theirs some nice history around this establishment and I suggest you go there, look at the old photos lining the walls and enjoy some really delicious food. #southernfoodnyc #africanamericanrestaurantnyc #foodnyc #upperwestsidenyc #nyc #uws #bananapudding #kingofcoffeenyc #kingofmarijuananyc #sankofatafari UPDATE!!! After my first review I was contacted by management to try the peach cobbler. It was yummy for my tummy.
Great restaurant for authentic soul food. Great menu options along with good portions. I really loved the flavors. Food was well seasoned with the correct spices. Reminded me of my grandmas cooking. Smothered chicken was fantastic. The sampler was great as I got to sample some of their main entrees and sides. You can't go wrong with this place. I have had soul food from various restaurants and Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too is a keeper. I will be going back SOON!
The food was really great and the owner was delightful. I'm not sure how I felt about our waiter. He didn't seem too friendly but he wasn't exceptionally rude or anything. The leftovers were just as good!
I definitely liked my experience! The young lady was a one stop shop....honey! She held down the entire front of house. She was the bartender, waitress, hostess and runner honey. Now, the food: BBQ ribs were delicious and completely melting off the bone. The sauce was the perfect match. The mac n cheese was good....not the best I've ever had. But good! The yams and collard greens are what's going to bring me back. OMG!!!! They are delicious. So, i ordered the Miss Mamie Sampler and honey it was just enough to make me order a plate. It is worth the money. Try it!!! I then shared a combination entree of ribs and fried chicken. As you can see in the picture, we ate all the meat. We were full to capacity!!!!! Only downfall was the cornbread and the card machine being down. If it would've been online l, then the tip would've been higher. But, i must say.....this place is definitely worth the try.
Went to Mamie's for an early weekend dinner. It was also the Valentine's weekend. Place was fairly empty at 5pm by the time we left at 7 it was more than half full. The seafood sampler was ok, everything tasted fresh and it was crunch. Uncle Al's ribs were excellent, meat was tender and flavorful.
Nice spot to go for some good soul food. The second time i went an elderly woman came out to greet us and make sure everything was good. She was so sweet. The cornbread was delicious. If i could make the trip on my own i would go every day just for the cornbread too bad i can't.
Very quiet and exclusive site, nothing touristy. Excellent fried chicken made with love for assiduous of the zone. Very careful and personalized attention. A culinary oasis with Jamaican fragance, in a modern and cosmopolitan Harlem. Excellent quality / price ratio. 100% recommendable!
My Sis and I stopped by lunch after church yesterday. I've had one of the best fried pork chops I've had. It was delicious! I had the potato salad and string beans as side and they were equally as delicious. I live upstate, but hope to get back soon!
Food was overall very good. Norma was extremely kind to us. I am sad- however- at the lack of staff at this restaurant. There was only 1 server at the time that seemed to be doing everything. Making drinks, handling angry delivery drivers, having to tend to multiple tables, and running back and forth to the kitchen like a madman. I felt bad- but it seems that the place could run a LOT better with more staff. Although the food is great, the wait times to be seated, given drinks, and served our food was ridiculously long. I know soul food is made to order, but the poor 'server/host/bartender' who literally had to do everything seemed extremely overworked. Having people designated to do each specified job (One hostess in charge of seating people/dealing with delivery people, a couple of servers to handle food and give orders to the kitchen, and one person that can bartend) would greatly benefit this restaurant instead of overworking one young man and one chef in the back. Because the food was so great I am rating 4 stars. I do hope- in the future though- that they will hire more people to be a more cohesive unit.
I ordered the fried chicken dinner with collards and Mac snd cheese. Then I orderd sweet potato pie for deseert. My dinner was so so si delicious, however, my sweet potato pie was not tasty at all. The staff was very friendly, the prices was very good as well as the portions. A good place to dine.
Very hospitable staff. Quite possibly the warmest I’ve ever been treated at a restaurant, and I’m from the South. Food was very tasty. I had the fried chicken, mac n cheese, and greens. The rum punch had some sort of ginger or mint that added fizz and a peculiar taste. Not my favorite taste but strong enough to make you forget you don’t like it. Service is extremely slow, so don’t go if you’re in any sort of hurry. It took over half an hour to order and about as long or longer to pay, but the food comes out in pretty good time. I would definitely go back.
The sampler was great! Gives you a taste of everything. The banana pudding was ok and my drink was really good! Service was a bit slow considering there weren't a lot of people there when I went.
I’ve been going to Miss Mamie’s for years. The atmosphere is always friendly and it feel more like a neighborhood spot and the crowd is diverse. The food may sometimes be inconsistent but on average it is good—my favorite is the smothered chicken. If you’re in the area it’s worth a try if you are looking for southern comfort food.
Cobbler was outta this world. Melt in mouth sweet goodness. They could give us more cream. The sampler platter was a bit underwhelming. Ribs were good though. Candied Yams on the side were nice, as was mac n cheese. Cornbread stuffing was weird, The cornbread itself was ok. Had Banana pudding another time, it was incredible, but a very small amount in a glass that was designed to dissapoint you. Pretty unjust price, such a shame.
Hadn't eaten there in years, ordered the turkey wings, collard greens and yams 3 weeks ago and the food was ok. The collard greens were spicy (I hate spicy food), turkey wings, a little salty and cooked hard yams were good.
The fish was very good but a small portion. The garbage and string beans was good but also a very small portion. The music was good to listen to. Not enough waiter staff. Long wait for food. So if you like good soul food this is the place if you have but so much time to eat then go to a different place!!(not the place for you)
Cute spot. The staff is so friendly! Loved the fried chicken. The corn bread was very dry. The sweet potato was just ok. My favorite was the chocolate cake! The coconut cake was terrible.
It was pretty basic. $6 for jar lemonade is ridiculous without refills. The rice for the rice and beans was 2 mins undercooked. The chicken needed a little more seasoning or marinades in buttermilk. The waitress was nice and attentive. The restaurant was nice and clean.
It was recommended by friends and mostly driven by my wife's previous experience (11 years ago), we made our way to the establishment all the way from the Midwest. We had the three piece chicken meal with no drinks. The chicken was delicious though one piece was too tough to finish, and as the others have said, the collard green was pretty good too. I personally liked the mashed potato. The place was clean, cute and well lit, and it has a good view of the park. The waitress was quite wonderful and attentive. That been said, I feel the meal was just above average and a bit over priced. What's interesting was, the great review I read in the restaurant hallway by NYT, mentioned the chicken meal was about $10, where we had paid $20. Not sure how old that review was...
My family and I had a long day out so we wanted to get some local soul food. We were headed to Melbas but they were full. When we initially came in no one was there to greet us. I saw why bc there were only two severs and the place was pack. We were expecting a third guest but bc the long wait she left. After finally being seated we had to wait 30+mins.for the menus, than wait 30+ mins.for the water, than we got our orders taken, after another 30+ mins we got cornbread and it was a real LONG wait for the food. Than when we did get the food our drinks hadn’t reach the table. We had to remind the server and there were no straws. The restroom was clean and didn’t have lingering odors. Overall the food was good and stuck to the style of southern cuisine. My mom tore her plate up!!😂😂
I have gone to this place many times. This was one of my favorite soul food places but now they are really not as good anymore. They wait is too long for half good food. I ordered catfish and they cut one piece of fish and half and served it. 20 plus dollars. Greens were salty. Wife had fried chicken, overly fried. You have really gone backwards with the goodness of the food. The food was so much better in the past.... On another note please get the women in the front help. What is her job? Bartender, waitress, cashier, and cleaner? She is doing everything. She is way overwhelmed. This is always been like this... Like, I said been going here for years. So I have seen many different people in the front. Always one person. You guys have stayed in business because of the location and that some people really don't know good soul food in that area. You got to do better for the prices. The Atmosphere has always been always nice. Please do better..
This restaurant was pricey and was a long wait, but was worth it for the delicious chicken. However, they ran out of several items of food, and we had to constantly change the orders because of this. The peas were a weird gray color and did not look appealing at all. The staff was very nice and apologetic about the food mishaps. The BBQ chicken was very good, and it was a simple and cute building. Overall, an okay experience.
Good day, Upon arrival the hostess was on her cell phone as well as during and upon exiting. When asked, she said she was from St Lucia, why not employ a Southern Bell instead? The smothered Turkey wing, yes ONE wing for $22+ is absurd as the fatty skin covered the Turkey bone and you could barely find enough Turkey on the bone to make ONE Turkey sandwich. The smothered GRAVY was tasty BUT the fatty skin is not edible which means you really aren’t getting much from one wing. The cornbread has a weird starchy taste and isn’t good! Is it vegan or just missing ingredients? Standing near the counter smells of exterminator spray which is where your food is placed by chef. The Mac and cheese was tasty but the mashed potatoes were bland and cold. When I told the hostess after calling her over while on her mobile phone she said that they were cold because they were put on the plate first and did not offer to replace them.. That really doesn’t make sense at all! Melba’s has them beat on many levels!
Wait long i thi k tjere is one cook my chicken was Raw yuck had to send it back. no salt or pepper on the table: hot sauce was a chinese packet what???? The owner came in i will say this allow me to come in and cook the ambiance would be astronomically different. Its a nice place but Fire the cook. Mac n cheese yuck collards ok nothing great! And my friend had short ribs she couldnt even cut. Wow give me a weekend the crowd would be around tje corner...please get inside chairds not lawn chairs they were jars and uncomfortable. Wait aervlce too young. Waitress told me she cant remove the tomatoes from tjhe Gumbo...whT i nwver ordered gumbo i ordered a green salad no tomatoe..she said it come with tomatoes...huh is it premade. What if im allergic.to them she just didnt bring it: i was still wondering when did i order Gumbo..im allergic to shellfish. Oh boy one weekend let me come in and cook. The end and it was abThank you dinner for me and my sister. I couldnt wait to get home.
I don’t know what happened to this place. When we went for early dinner there were three other table occupied. Yet it took about 15 minutes for server to come and it took over 50 minutes for our dishes to arrive. The only reason we stayed was that we were chatting to catch up with each other. It turned out that fried chicken was too dry and I felt horrible I recommended the dish to my friend. Everything, service and cooking felt like they just opened yesterday and still trying to figure it out. There were several Uber eats messengers and poor guys were waiting forever, too.
Sad to say we did not have a good experience, considering that we drove 1hr and 30 minutes. The Ribs were practically frozen to the touch, the lady taking orders was very nice, but our overall experience was not pleasant. The wait time for our food was over 1hr as well. Definitely didnt match the previous reviews.
I ordered a meal that included macaroni and cheese with smothered turkey wings- the gravy was all over my macaroni and cheese- the gravy was obviously to hide the dryness of the turkey wings! Although I ordered on line I went to get the meal but didn’t check content, had I done so, it would have stayed there! I called and was offered another macaroni but the idea that they would serve it in that condition made me not return!
The first time that I went there the food was excellent the service was great. Even though I know it is Mother's Day restaurants are busy we had a 4pm reservation we did not get water until 5 along with cornbread. The Fried Chicken was not cooked thoroughly they only gave you one piece of rib and there were labels from the collard greens cooked inside of them they need more help.
I’m a little confused… I ordered to share at a friend’s house and this was my payment breakdown: $12.95 - BBQ chicken sandwich: the chicken was good and juicy however it came with no accompaniments or sides (just chicken on a bun) $7.95 - Mac and cheese- I got a small scoop of Mac and cheese.. for 7.95 I expect at least a decent take out side container ? $7.95 - French fries - I’m sorry but I got like 20 fries for $7.95… in what world is that acceptable? Maybe at the Mandarin Oriental. My subtotal was just under 30 dollars, I paid over 15 dollars for sides that quite frankly were the smallest portions I’ve ever had in my life… Tell me if I’m crazy ? See pic below (I had about 4 fries before a taking the pic, the rest is untouched)
I use to frequent Miss Mamie’s Spoonbread too with friends and family during my college years over 18 years ago. Today In brought my wife and children for dinner after our day at the museum. My wife and children ordered the meatloaf with two sides. I ordered the fried catfish with two sides and the addition of Hop n John. I was nostalgic for the flavors that I enjoyed when I frequented Spoonbread 18 years ago and regrettably I can best describe the food as disappointing. My two children who spilt the meatloaf could not stomach to finish their dish which was serves lukewarm. My wife who I hoped would enjoy her first experience here was also unsatisfied with her dish. I tried the meatloaf from her plate and I was disappointed; it tasted like luncheon meat that was is mealy and warmed in a microwave oven; in my opinion…this version of meatloaf should be off the menu permanently. My fried catfish was not terrible but it was underwhelming and a menu item impersonating a past favorite that I ordered often and recommended always. I recalled thick, hot, crispy catfish. Today I was served three thin and wispy pieces of catfish that was more batter than fish. After a fun filled family day at the museum, I looked forward to a the flavors of home cooking that I once enjoyed at Spoonbread Too only to have an uninspiring experience which I hope my family and I can one day forget; it was the low of our day. I’ll always remember Spoonbread for all the years of good eating when the restaurant was in its heyday but regrettably the days of hot, fresh and delicious home style cooking for Spoonbread Too has come and gone. Thanks for the memories.
We went to experience American southern food. Unfortunately, they told us they can't make their signature Gumbo nor Banana Pudding😔 So we ordered a sampling plate. Oil used for deep fried stuff didn't taste fresh. I didn't feel life in food 🙁 Collard green on the side was extremely salty😐. Lastly, they got the order wrong and served us extra sides which we didn't notice until bill came.
They have some nerve charging the amount they do and only giving three little ribs a small scoop of sides. Also I ordered yams, and they didn’t have. It’s a soul food restaurant how do you not have that? And the cornbread stuffing is gross and dry. Food wasn’t packed well, and arrived cold and messy in the delivery. Sad.
I had such high expectations for this restaurant and so sad it wasn’t so good. Let’s begin with how unsanitary things are. The ordering counter is sticky which reflects how disorganized and messy behind the counter was. None of the staff had hair-nets, aprons or gloves on. I orders (pork ribs , Mac n cheese and yams with a side of collards, red velvet cake , two pieces of fried chicken and a cup of juice). The juice container was so dirty I asked the waitress to throw it out. The Mac n cheese was hard and tasteless. The yams lacked the syrup , sweet boost it needed. The collards was inedible, way to much vinegar. The pork ribs swam in bbq sauce which took away how tender they were. The fried chicken was nice and crispy but needed to stay in another 2 minutes. Lastly the red velvet cake was so dry the birds flew past it when I threw it out. The portion size was smaller that I would have liked but I’m glad it was. I spent $65.00. God bless this establishment, it’s owners and it’s cooks.
Went here for an early dinner and the food is expensive for tiny portions. I ordered meatloaf and my partner ordered the “seafood sampler “. Seafood sampler comes with “shrimp, whiting and catfish and is $27! I ONLY received 3 pcs of shrimp and 1 small piece of whiting. When asked about the catfish , they said they were out. Why didn’t I get another piece of fish then. How is this entree called a sampler and I only get 3 pc shrimp and small piece of whiting and I got charged full price of $27. Bad management to not compensate customer for missing meat and still charge full price. NEVER going back! I felt like I was scammed and that’s not nice
Had a delivery order with them. Took an hour and a half to get to me because the restaurant didn't have my order and two drivers got tired of waiting. I called and no one picked up, and when they called back 20 minutes later the woman on the phone was rude. When I got the food it was ~okay~ at best. would not patronize agian.
I've been going there for quite a while, but over the time it has been going down in my eyes. This is just one instance from a few that I will share. I went there 12/30/16 to treat my aunt and family to a belated birthday dinner to her. The food was mediocre at best. My beef ribs were cooked to hard the rice and peas were kind of bland. Then on top of it all went to pay my bill with my credit card and had the waiter come back to tell me that the machine was outdated and would have to wait a while before they could charge the meal on my card. Obviously I was not gonna sit there and wait so I payed cash. And I still tipped the waiter who was more concerned about other patrons(who were white, us Hispanics) way more than she was about us. If you want great service and even greater food go to Amy Ruth's everything about them are outstanding. I will not eat at spoonbread again as I felt neglected and discriminated against..... And to think I used to tell my friends with praise for them and always tipped the staff generously everytime I ate there....😕😕😕
Not going back to spoonbread just came from there order they Turkey wing they were hard cornbread bread very dry. Waiter change only thing did put gravy over the meat.the gravy see didn't make gravy right tastes like oil.hearing good things about this place. The employee was excellent. So not coming back. the drink had better that just waste of my time
Hello, just left this place with 2 of my friends, we sat our selves and waited for about 10 minutes, before greeted by one Server/Bartender in the entire place. There was a group of 6-8 people at one table and another had 2 people and 1person for, a to go order. Even with the understaffing, we took a shot and ordered, 2 Grits with Catfish and 1 Waffle and Fried Chicken, 1 side of Mac and Cheese. The grits neither of us could continue to eat, it had a taste of tap water to me, how you ask, I asked myself the same thing, the fish wasn’t that bad. My other friend liked the Chicken and Waffles. The Mac I had was salty, my friend who substituted Mac and Cheese for her Grits, her Mac had Cheese thrown on top, and not fully melted. My 1st time there, not worth going back.
This visit was awful the only item I was able to consume was the tarter sauce for my catfish. My bill was a 125.00 after the 5.00 that was removed after my complaint about the turkey wings. My daughters meal was dry which she also had turkey wings. Please give me back my hard earn 💰 by contacting me to be the cook then I can eat my own good soul food. WHAT HAPPEN HERE
Terrible service! The meals took too long to arrive. The potato salad had too much vinegar in it. The candied yams were a bit soggy. There was no staff and only someone who seemed to be handling everything....although very kind, he was alone. The owner was there, she was simply present and that was it. Seemed to have only one cook in the kitchen who appeared to be stressed. We began outside underneath the front pergola, but eventually moved inside the restaurant because of the presence of a rat. The bathroom had no hand soap. The atmosphere gave the impression of a place that was once functioning well, but has now declined.
MISS MAMIE'S IS NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN SOUL FOOD. This place serves a Caribbean fusion version of soul food. It's disgusting!! The cabbage and the cornbread dressing are full of curry powder. The mac & cheese is heavy, stiff and flavorless. Miss Mamie's serves little dry pieces of brittle, flavorless cornbread too. No...not the cornbread bricks!! The sweet potato pie was an extreme disaster as well, I should have known because its color was brown. The fried chicken was heavily breaded and sweet (?). What southern cook makes candied fried chicken in a heavy corn breaded jacket. The portions were very tiny and did not correlate with the hefty prices, but since most of the food was way-off in terms of taste, we didn't care about the small portions. The 1 rib on the sampler was good. The 3 sautéed shrimp were good too. They both tasted like Caribbean food though, not like Soul Food!! We wasted $74 at Miss Mamie's yesterday because the food was utterly nauseating. The tastes of cummin and curry were pervasive throughout most of food of the two dishes that we received and it was sickening!! The place was clean and the service was kind but we went there for 'soul food' and we received food that was equal to what you get in a Caribbean restaurant. Southern people looking for that 'authentic southern' cooking will be 100% disappointed with Miss Mamie's cuisine. We couldn't eat this food. We actually went home and ate some leftovers from our refrigerator. LISTEN TO ME ... If you want soul food like your Grandma used to make, DO NOT get it from Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Restaurant.
Hired this company to cater a Repass. The owner Norma is extremely deceptive. The price she quoted did not include chafing dishes or even serving spoons. She adds on expenses through her subcontractor. The day before the event, I arranged entry to a prestigious church, where her company is not allowed to cater. As a personal favor, I was allowed to use them. All of the items were delivered to the wrong church! The day of the event, the food and servers were scheduled to arrive an hour and a half early. They arrived an hour late. Instead of being able to participate during my mother’s service, I had to call her repeatedly to make sure they were going to show up. Our guest had to wait an hour after the service for them to set up. Family and friends helped set the tables her people were responsible for. I do NOT, recommend NORMA’S SPOONBREAD if professionalism and timeliness are needed at your event. She over promised and under delivered.
It's was a bad experience. The food was not authentic southern soul food the fish was not catfish, the ribs were not smoked. We paid for buffet and got a one serving of what we thought was good. Peach cobbler didn't taste like homemade. However, the baked chicken was tasty. I wish I can give a half a Star.
Had a taste for soul food and this was my first time ordering from here, the ratings were good so far, I ordered smothered turkey wings, rice & peas , potato salad and paid extra for macaroni & cheese and sweet potatoes , the Turkey wings wasn’t smothered, and didn’t get the macaroni & cheese and sweet potatoes , who does that and on top “I paid extra “, sorry but I will not be ordering from yaw ever again, I’ll just stick to Melbas , they follow directions and at least call you If they are short on a few Items smh.
