We absolutely loved visiting The Rum House multiple times during our trip to NYC. It’s a great spot for drinks after a show—gorgeous atmosphere, excellent music, delicious drinks, and friendly bartenders. Rene in particular showed us a great time. You don’t see great rum selections at many bars, so this is a must-visit in my opinion.
Lovely bar connected to the Edison hotel following the same theme. Lovely cocktails and staff would visit again.
We stopped into the Rum House on a rainy night last week, a bit randomly after doing the tourist thing in Time's Square. The atmosphere is dark with red low lighting and on a Sunday night it was fairly busy; we had to wait a bit to get seats at the bar. Staff was nice and pleasant and left us alone when we wanted. We had 4 different rum cocktails, all were great. The mojito was exceptionally good, not too sweet, not too mixed, and they were happy to oblige with my requested topper of some dark rum. The "pina colada" was smooth and had some emotion rather than being basic and plain. We did not try any of the bites, but would highly recommend Rum House for some elegant but still fun and tropical rum drinks. They had an extensive list of other spirits as well, and the old fashioneds looked good but we did not try.
The atmosphere and cocktails were very good. Gino and the rest of the barkeeper crew are fun and very warm people.
I think this is one of Manhattan best kept secret spots. Small jazz bar with a good selection of cocktails and with live music. Been to couple of jazz clubs in London and they tend to charge a cover for just getting in. Here entry is free, spaces are tight but the atmosphere feels authentic. Cocktails are good size and packed with flavour. The live band was amazing and they were so close that it felt as hey are singing just to you. Cant recommend enough!
Basilio Is TOP TIER. Your bar is truly blessed to have him and we were blessed to be served and engage in great convo with him.
I came just for a quick drink before going back home, but the atmosphere and vibe were too good to just bounce. This is really a hidden gem for me. The bartender that took care of me was super skilled and mixed my drink to perfection. I'm definitely coming back for more drinks!!! 🥰🥰🤤
Nice bar. Expensive but it's NYC so pretty much everything is expensive. They had live jazz so that was really nice. It's pretty small but that's a trend in NYC. Pretty much most bars and food establishments are very small in Manhattan.
For me it is one of the best cocktail places. If you are are rum cocktail lover, of course this is your place. Well done cocktail. Low lights. Low music. Even perfect if you want to go alone. Try to sit at the bar because you will see all the bartenders skill and you will always have a nice talk. They also have cocktail with other kind of spirits, but if you are at The Rum House, you should try some Rum Cocktails
Excellent drinks and atmosphere! Love the vibe, and it's a little hidden gem in the midst of a very busy area.
The minute I walked in, Gino was ON IT. Being from TX, the southern hospitality sometimes doesn’t compare up north but I’ve never been happier to sit at a bar in NYC. One of the best experiences I’ve ever had in Midtown and would come back anytime just to chat with Gino. Thank you!!!! 5/5
Tried this place out on a Tuesday night and it was the perfect end to a workday! A true 20svibe setting with pleasantly nice ppl enjoying cocktails and snacks. I had the pineapple daiquiri and the hotel nancial cocktail each for $18 a piece and really strong but great tasting selections (all recco from the bartender). Even to my surprise there was a 4 piece band that started at 9:30 that kept the vibes immaculate the whole way through. Def recommend trying this place out for a simple, yet sophisticated vibe in Times Square/theater district.
Just go. Thank me later - Authentic Old Manhattan - What a GEM! As a Canadian who has been to New York almost a dozen times over the years, I have certainly developed a love for my favourite hot spots in the city. I JUST discovered The Rum House last Sunday night (September 24, 2023) along with my best friend (who found the place on google), and WOW were we ever surprised. I can say with certainty that this was likely my most favourite night I've ever spent in Manhattan, EVER. George and his band sang straight to my heart with all the classic songs you'd expect out of a vintage New York in the 40's, 50's and 60's. I sang my heart out without a care in the world while George stayed classy and hit every note as though he was Sinatra's, Martin's and Armstrong's living spirits! The drinks were great, the people were from all over the world, the staff was friendly and professional and the entire experience was a thrill. My heart needed that night, thank you for delivering. I will be back! Well done! Marcie.
We were staying at the Edison Hotel, and the Rum House is located at the first floor, just in front of the elevators. It was just our must go every night before going to sleep. Every night they have live music and every night different artists (and they don't charge cover), all the artists were so good, I couldn't say which was better than the other. We sat at the bar and some times at tables and always good attention. A must go, we definitely go back our next time in NY.
Great bar located in the corner of a historic art deco hotel. Drinks are slightly expensive, but high quality and reasonable given the location near Times Square. 100% worth the price for the live music shows. If you are looking for a classy venue to be transported back to the roaring twenties, this is the place.
Let me tell you something - we walked into #therumhousenyc expecting a drink. I left wanting to name my first born “Mai Tai.” This place is vibes. Like if Sinatra and a Caribbean pirate opened a speakeasy and served liquid gold in glass form. The drinks? Phenomenal. Not “oh this is nice” phenomenal - I’m talking shut-up-and-take-my-money phenomenal. One sip and I audibly whispered, “This might be where I achieve my final form.” We started with the pretzel - and I’m convinced it was forged in the fires of Mt. Snackmore. Soft, warm, slightly salty, with a mustard that had me considering unspeakable things. Then came the marinated olives - and I don’t even like olives. But these? These were like Mediterranean candy. I felt cultured. I felt sexy. I felt…hydrated. Ambiance-wise, it’s moody, it’s jazzy, it’s got that dim glow that makes everyone look like they’ve got secrets and a Netflix deal. If you don’t leave here slightly tipsy and dramatically humming a jazz riff in the rain, did you even go? 10/10. Would drink here again until my credit card begs for mercy.
The atmosphere is immaculate. It feels like a throwback to a bygone era that is cozy, intimate, and classy. The drinks were well made and fairly priced. There’s live music after 9:30! Great place for a drink at night.
Renee - the most awesome Rum House Manager was absolutely amazing ! He made our experience wonderful and memorable ! His energy was great ! The drinks was fabulous , the popcorn the best popcorn ever and the Jazz music amazing ! Seriously best popcorn I’ve ever had anywhere ! Highly recommend this wonderful bar connected to the Edison Hotel ! Thanks for an amazing time ! Georgiana - White Fire Rose 🌹
One of my favorite bars . If you are visiting time square do visit this place. Excellent cocktails and cozy ambiance. We came here early to secure the seat for the Jazz music night. The Mimiandpod brother were playing it was really awesome. The Rum House totally matched my expectation of a cozy jazz lounge. Very comfortable and intimate.
Very nice bar attached to the hotel Edison in Times Square. The atmosphere and Ambiance is very nice. Live music on weekends. Piano and other instruments. Bartender was great (see pictures no glasses). Drank scotch all night, but very entertaining watching him make mixed drinks for people. Talent.
What a great spot to hang out on a Friday night. Rum House has a speak easy vibe, live jazz band and an innovative drink menu. We got there around 11 pm, and the place was packed. Took us a minute to find a seat as we had no reservation. The bartenders were so accommodating, and even with the overwhelming amount of patrons, Chris took time to recommend and adjust drink recipes. Located just about 3-minute walk from prime location of Times Square, The Rum House is a well-rounded, pretty decent bar that provides great socializing at good prices. We stayed until closing :)
Nick is the best bartender! best service, very attentive, and drinks very strong! really enjoyed our experience with everyone involved in the bar!! a must do for new york
I came here solo for a nightcap during a business trip to NYC. The Rum House feels intimate and private, a hidden gem as many have mentioned, right by Times Square. I was impressed by the live jazz, the quality of the cocktails, and the warm décor. Try an Aviation or if you’re ordering off the menu, the Painkiller does just the trick. Service was excellent given how busy the location is. I look forward to the next time I can enjoy a libation or two at The Rum House again!
Met up for drinks and bites with a couple great friends of ours who are also from the west coast. Service was phenomenal and the manager took extremely good care of us and accommodated all of us even with the available tables being reserved. Drinks were very strong and tasty. Not a ton of bite options though, we settled on the olives, pretzel and salt and vinegar chips. Atmosphere was also amazing. Low light and very chill mood inside. Live piano was also a hit!
A rum lover’s dream but an absolute NYC staple. Where else can people go out to a swanky dimly lit cocktail bar and be serenaded by luxurious cocktails and funk jazz beats? The vibe is immaculate and this place lives up the classic Manhattan cocktail lounge reputation. The drinks are bold, exciting, and rum-forward. Have to give a shout out to the best doorman in the biz, Gino, who not only made us feel welcome like VIP’s, but did his best to bestow the same feelings to everyone else who walked through the door. His energy matched the brand the drinks and decor worked so hard to cement. We will be back
LOVE THIS PLACE!! My friends and I are regulars here, such kind staff!!! Gino is so kind every time we LOVE HIM!! Basillio is such an amazing bartender!!!! Will be back here all the time! The live music is so incredible!!
Wanted to have a few drinks while listening to live music during my weekend trip to New York City. Arrived around 8p on a Friday night without reservations and was able to get a table right away. This worked out perfectly as the night went on, the longer the line was and was down the street by the time I left. It's a small, intimate cocktail bar so the tables are very close to one another, but everyone is in their own world. Also, with the natural crowd noise and then the music, you couldn't hear anything at the next table anyway. Enjoyed a few small bites from the popcorn, peanuts, and olives with the drinks. Everything sounded so good, so ordered a wide-range of cocktails primarily from the Rum Cocktails and House Originals. Each drink was nicely presented and had its own character. They were well balanced between the liquor, liqueur, and sweetness. All were good, depending upon what flavor you're looking for. The small bites were simple, but were perfect for snacking. The band started around 9:30p and they sounded great. Nice mix of modern jazz, classical jazz, and their original mixes. They were very engaging and kept the atmosphere very lively and entertaining. Recommend coming here if you're in the Times Square area, just come early to beat the crowds.
Extensive drinks menu with a tiny bit of food, the hot dog was actually very big and we got chips on the side, there are so many delicious options for drinks. We had daquiris which is similar to a gimlet (it’s not the frozen ones you might think of) a paper plane, hotel national and it was all well balanced and delicious, great vibe, they started live music at around 7 and that was nice and not too loud, our server was also fantastic
If you are coming to NYC for a limited time, this place is a must go-to! The drinks are affordable, there is live jazz music, and the feel of the bar gives off the perfect 20th century NYC vibes. Our bartender provided excellent service, making us feel very welcome.
Amazing little spot with an incredible rum selection, great atmosphere, and excellent service. Despite being so close to Times Square this place still has soul and a great authentic vibe. Really enjoyed hanging out here for a bit and chatting it up with the bartenders (especially Gino), trying some new rums, and enjoying their unique house cocktails. One of my new favorite spots in the city.
We were looking for something to do on our overnight trip to New York, we popped in around 11 PM and unfortunately couldn’t find a spot to sit. After waiting a few minutes outside, we noticed that a table had cleared up so we made our way back in and we were seated. Our server was attentive and kind, the drinks were spot on. I had an amaretto sour, it was one of the best I’ve had. We did not try any of the food on the menu as we just come from dinner. The live music was a vibe. The atmosphere was perfect. As someone who has never been to New York before now, this place is exactly what I was hoping for. It feels, authentic New York. It was the exclamation to our night as we had just left the Broadway Theatre watching the Great Gatsby. Definitely worth the wait. Will be back!
Wow! This was a fun cocktail bar! Got lucky and came in right as Jazz band was setting up! Band was great, perfect for a date night! Try their rum drinks, super tasty! Seating near jazz band was limited, would recommend getting there early! Table service was quick, our server was great! Would recommend for a nice vibey night!
My husband and I came to The Rum House before a Broadway show and had a great experience. The space has a classic Cuban-meets-Old-Hollywood vibe. We sat at the bar and the bartender was knowledgeable and attentive. We arrived during happy hour and started with drinks from that menu. For our second round, I ordered a Painkiller (the Painkiller is my favorite rum cocktail), from the full menu and it ended up being one of the best I’ve ever had! I had to stop myself from ordering more—I didn’t want to be crawling into the theater. Overall, it was the perfect spot to kick off our evening!
We went to the Rum House after a Broadway show to listen to the jazz band and have a cocktail and it didn't disappoint. It's a great old fashioned feeling bar that has a extensive rum selection and rum cocktails as well as other drinks. The Jazz band starts playing at 9:30pm and there is no cover charge, seats fill up quickly, but we managed to get the last table seats available. The bar has a great atmosphere and the band was good and played a number of songs including one vocal, "I've Got You Under My Skin", by Frank Sinatra. We had a wonderful time and will definitely go again. 🍸
Loved this place! We first popped in because I heard about their happy hour which is from 4-6pm and offers very fair priced drinks, especially for being in NYC. They are a cocktail bar so food options are limited to small snacks; however, the marinated olives were quite tasty. We were told every night they have live music beginning at 9:30pm. We went back and heard some wonderful live Jazz and enjoyed more drinks!! I recommend the mojito. The location is perfect if you are seeing any shows on Broadway or are near Hell's Kitchen or Times Square. Renne and Gianni were exceptional. Definitely will visit again when I find myself back in Manhattan.
Great place to end your evening in the heart of Manhattan! The bar is bursting with character, has a great atmosphere + the cocktails are expertly made! The staff were really helpful giving us advise on what to order and they had an amazing Jazz Band playing for the duration of our stay Thanks for everything! We are happy to have this on our list of favourites and will openly encourage friends and family to check it out!

This little place is a gem. Different live music . One night it was jazz, another night Blues. Drinks were very good . Need to get there early for a table

Stopped by here for a pre-show drink. The atmosphere was nice. There was not any music while we were there. Our server was wonderful. The cocktails were excellent too. Getting in was the only slight negative because the place was empty yet the doorman said he had to “make sure they had room” which felt pretentious. But once inside it was great!
decent place, cool atmosphere, good drinks. Main complaint is the waitress was quite rude, tip is automatically included, eight dollar tip for two drinks for that level service, not worth it.
Loved it here. Great ambience and atmosphere. Phenomenal band (mimi & the podd Brothers) playing last night. The drinks were phenomenal. Pricey but understandable. I loved the cocktail "Star F**cker" so good I got 2 of them. Place was very tight though, they need to expand it. It's nice if you're sitting & comfortable(which i was), but many people were standing & hoping for a place to sit. Also the bathroom is in the hotel, so you have to leave the place to use restroom. Overall Highly recommend. Great night.
When I visit the place, it looks like a regular bar with a good drinks. I order a bottle of red wine and it cost like arouns $60. Well foe that price the wine were pretty decent, and up untill 9.30 pm suddenly Harlem Slim comes. It was cool with his resonator guitar, the night become lively the bar becomes crowded. Cool! The only downside? There is little choice of snacks.
Stopped in for some jazz. Typical small jazz spot, with great musicians. Get there early for a table. Restrooms are in the hotel lobby, that’s how small it is. 😊
Didn't eat here, came for a cocktail (an Escape) and to listen to some live Jazz whilst I drank it. This place has history and ambience. Drinks are not cheap but it has over 180 different Rum's and the bartenders make mean cocktails. The Jazz was good too. Will definitely return one day.
I’ve been coming to the Rum House for many years and I love it. I love the atmosphere the drinks and the music. However, in the past there was a construction across the street. Now the scaffolding is gone and there is light coming in that feels like a baseball stadium! It takes away from the cozy, time traveling feeling I used to feel when coming here. I asked the waiter to close the shades and she refused. Honestly it doesn’t feel the same. . Please fix this. Close the shades.
We stopped in for a cocktail before a show. This place has great ambience. Lots of wood, red leather, and low lighting. The service was great. Our server was attentive and prompt. If you like your drinks strong this is a good place for you. I thought the alcohol overshadowed the flavor of the rest of the ingredients but that's a personal preference. Overall, a cool place to hang out.

Could have been 5 stars with -more availability on snacks section of menu. (They were out of two things before even dinner time) -more food options in general. -better staffed behind bar. Little slow for my taste. The atmosphere is great, location cool. Clean / good staff / and nice service.
I was so excited to visit Rum House as I am a guest at the hotel attached. Atmosphere is great! It wasn’t busy so I picked a table and sat down. The server took my order and confirmed my seat I chose was ok when I asked. I took out my laptop to work (as I am traveling solo for business) and when she brought over my drink she told me I was not allowed to work. I would need to go elsewhere. Apparently this is in the menu that I didn’t notice. Ok, I said no problem and then she proceeded to escort me to another area that would be better suited since this was meant to be a “date spot.” I was then sat by door to back room by window. I quickly finished my drink and left. I’ve never felt so unwelcome in an establishment, let alone an establishment that had 20+ empty table for those on dates. When I asked the server if this was common for other restaurants in hotels she proceeded to say that no restaurant is meant for “work.” I’m still baffled by the disconnect and service.
The 20% mandatory tip does it for me 😞. I liked the music, the atmosphere, the cocktails were good but overpriced themselves. On top of that the 20% tip automatically applied to the bill, not disclosed anywhere beforehand which is not a good practice for a business like this 😕. The service was okay when the bartender wasn't busy chatting up with girl customers.
Horrible service. Creepy workers. Got an espresso martini, was way overcharged, prices did not match menu

Last Friday 12 th October I went to The Rum House with a friend . The cocktails and atmosphere were good. We thought it was a good place to stay a bit longer and get another round, but after a very long day we were desperate to sit down. We finally got a seat and a member of staff ( a blonde woman wearing blazer ) told me to get up as the table was reserved. There was no reserved sign on the table . I was under the impression the bar had a no reserve rule. I didn’t want to argue so I got up … but no one sat , some seconds later , a couple who just turned up and had their fresh cocktails sat on the seats I was told to leave . I just have to laugh and I joked with the couple saying that she must like them more than us. I saw a free table next to that one so we sat … a few seconds later the woman’s comes back and tells me to get up again . When I asked her why she said “ I told you already this table is reserved “ so I said : “ reserved for who ??? This one was also reserved according to you and this couple just sat down after you told me to get up !” At this point my friend wanted to leave out of embarrassment. I left the table but I refused to leave , but I didn’t not spend another dollar . Luckily the couple who took the table turned out to be very friendly and invited us to join them. We had a great time , but not thanks to the bizarre and rude behavior of this woman . Will I go back ? Nope. I don’t like being treated second class, nobody does.
This is one of those places that has such a good location, they don’t need to bother with making sure the product or experience is up to standard. Visited here on Wednesday 24th Sep at about 18:30, and during the time we were there there was never more than 3 tables including us. - despite being empty, no acknowledgment when walking in to let us know that it was seat yourself and table service. - the whole time we were there, whichever bartender was messing around with the music would often skip back to the beginning of the same song and let it play again. - after ordering our second round, waited 10+ minutes for our drinks to be made. It was quiet and the bartenders weren’t making any other drinks, just fiddling with the music platform. - someone the bartenders knew was sat at the bar and started watching videos at full volume on his phone, and wasn’t told to cut it out. When drinks are $20-25 you would expect them to care about the ambiance. - when the check came it included a 20% service charge for a table of 2 with an expectation to tip afterwards as well. When I explained that we would be tipping cash and asked to take the service off, he said he would still need the full service charge amount in cash, and only removed it when I asked if it was discretionary or mandatory. This kind of behaviour is preying on the tourism footfall they will get here. Not content with selling so-so cocktails for $25 dollars, they nickel and dime you and hope you go along with it out of social embarrassment. Overall a terrible experience from staff that could not care less about the people they are serving. From a management perspective these things are easy to fix - but they seemingly don’t care either
We’ve visited The Rum House every time we come to NYC, but unfortunately this will be our last. We hyped the place up to my husband’s brother and mother who joined us this time, and the experience was disappointing from the moment we walked in. We arrived right at opening, and the staff was noticeably unwelcoming and standoffish. It took quite a while for anyone to take our order, and the attention was clearly focused on a larger party next to us. There was a woman who seemed to be the manager, and the way she addressed us felt aggressive and abrupt. As she moved tables and chairs around, I was hit multiple times—by chairs and even by her body—with no apology or acknowledgment. I’m from Philly and go to a lot of restaurants and bars, so I’m used to the hustle and bustle, but this was completely unnecessary and unacceptable. Once we realized the tip is automatically included, it made sense why we felt they didn’t care how they treated us.
I had a very uncomfortable experience here. As a Black woman, I walked in and the host repeatedly walked past me without acknowledging me. After several minutes, he finally said, “I’ll get back to you,” conveniently as a white couple walked in behind me. Although we were both parties of two, they were seated in a favorable corner table while I was placed by the door. When I politely asked to move to another available table (with the same amount of seats)I was told it was reserved for a larger party. The treatment felt dismissive and unequal. What made the situation even more ironic was that Caribbean music was playing throughout the restaurant. It felt deeply ironic to enjoy our culture while seemingly disregarding our presence. Additionally, be aware that there is a two-drink minimum. I hope management reflects on how guests are treated and works to ensure all patrons feel welcomed and respected.
I went to The Rum House the other night and had very mixed feelings. The live music was absolutely fantastic — trumpet, contrabajo, piano — more 40s/50s style than modern jazz, but the musicians were incredibly talented, friendly, and cheerful. Honestly, they were the highlight of the evening. That said, everything else was disappointing. A bottle of wine was $60 (just checked, you can get the same bottle for $13.99 online) and honestly not very good. The food menu was extremely limited — the most “serious” option was a $10 hot dog, which took half an hour to arrive (though, to be fair, it was decent once it came). The real dealbreaker came at the end: when the bill arrived, there was a 20% service charge automatically added. This wasn’t presented upfront, and it wasn’t a tip — it was just baked into the bill with no choice. I get that the musicians need to be paid, and I’d happily contribute or buy a ticket at the door. But sneaking in a hidden fee after you’ve already ordered feels shady, especially since most of the crowd are tourists. It’s a shame, because the music really was wonderful, but this left such a bad taste that I wouldn’t come back, even if they booked the best musicians in the world.
