This was such a unique experience. The restaurant has a Panaderia, an atoleria and a restaurant. All of them offer flavors of Oaxaca. The atmosphere and architecture is so inviting and the service is outstanding. You feel at home. From the receptionist to the cooks and particularly in the Atoleria, Victor, was amazing. He dedicated time to explain to us the history of the Atoles, their differences in flavor and preparation. You can tell he is proud to work at Tierra del Sol and knows his trait. A must see in Oaxaca.

We had brunch here on a Sunday so didn’t get the full dinner menu, but it was outstanding. The rooftop terrace was beautiful and we enjoyed the brunch. It was different kind of food on a much higher level than you normally would get at a basic restaurant. My wife and I were doing only Michelin star mentioned restaurants while in Oaxaca for the first time and we’re so glad we didn’t miss this one. they have a beautiful pastry shop and bar and we really enjoyed the food. Don’t miss this gem

The idea of the chef and what they represent is beautiful so is the location. However I was disappointed to see cocktails were premixed, service personnel unorganized, they were a lot of people there but none with a clear task as they all asked the same questions and stuff like bringing the menus was forgotten. For the price I expected flawless food but unfortunately the ribs were very chewy and undercooked. All in all a nice place but overpriced in my view.

This restaurant is in a perfect location overlooking the entrance to the botanical gardens. The food really was very good - we tried the stuffed chili and the shank mole (nice and spicy). It was a great experience. I would have given 5*, but I was disappointed by the ridiculous size of my negroni. Without the icecube it would have hardly filled the bottom of the glass.

The service was kind. I love the concept of the restaurant sourcing foods from local farmers and growing their own food. Of the three dishes we had, the mole was my favorite of all the moles in Oaxaca. (Bay leaf) I felt the beans for the olla de frijoles were very average for the cost. The tamale was okay. But the mole punches you in the face with flavor and I would lick the plate if I could. I loved the cardamom and chocolate atole drink. Atmosphere: though beautiful, it’s very, very warm up on the rooftop. No fans and the air stays still. This could be a good thing because you’ll get swamped with the delicious scents from the kitchen, but you’ll be wiping sweat from your brow as you do.

A beautiful, savory first floor experience marred by poor service and heavy meals. No suavecito. Try to avoid blaming your guests. Excellent views.

Oaxaca is now overpriced, and this restaurant is the clear example of a badly managed restaurant that has no business in being over expensive. The service was very bad, slow and had no attention to detail to be charging 3x what they are delivering. The dishes are all over 25 dlls, and have little substance in them. This is Oaxaca, not NYC. And in Mexico we pride on being servicial and humble. Sorry

3.5 Stars We had an ok evening at Tierra del Sol but it was far from perfect. Cons; It started off shaky, the organization of being seated for a tortilla and salsa tasting prior to heading up to the restaurant was very poorly executed. We were seated in kind of a holding area, waiting for room at the counter to become available and frankly we felt completely ignored. We sat there for 10 mins with not a glance from any staff members, while people seated around us were offered drinks and interacted with staff. What felt particularly rude was that a couple who entered the restaurant at the same time as us were told that they couldn't be seated because they didn't have a reservation. They went upstairs to look at the restaurant, came back down, seated themselves next to us and were being served drinks, while we, who had reservations, were still sitting there being completely ignored!!!! The whole tortilla/salsa before dinner was a nice idea, incredibly poorly executed. Pros; The restaurant upstairs was very attractive, our table had a lovely view. Our waiter was friendly, informative and engaging. The food was typical Oaxacan flavors, nicely presented. However .... The bone marrow was ok but surprisingly bland for marrow. The three generations mole was lovely but the turkey it came with was dry. Cocktails were nice, the Mexican Chenin Blanc we had was huge - very different than a light French Chenin Blanc. It was an interesting tipple. We would probably not return.

There’s a lot to love about this place- it’s a beautiful seating, staff are warm, there’s a very clear philosophy underpinning everything. However there is definitely some room for improvement and we came away feeling the meal was a more style over substance. Service was a little chaotic- we had a very eloquent explanation of the restaurant from (presumably) the manager, but were then passed over to a few waiters who didn’t seem to be in communication with each other, meaning forgotten drinks, strange timings etc. The food was really inconsistent- my Huauzontle (pictured) was memorable and exciting, served with tortillas made on site and with a lot of thought and care, but my friends had some truly uninspiring quesadillas that really made me question the standards here. Everything was also *very* expensive relative to its quality and competing restaurants in the vicinity. Perhaps the brunch chefs and staff are just not up to the evening standard. I wouldn’t rush back unless there was an effort to bring the quality in line with the price.

This place tries hard to be trendy, but the overall experience was pretty average. The atmosphere is nice, but the food didn’t live up to the expectations — especially in a city like Oaxaca, where the bar for good cuisine is set high. A lot of the reviews here have a similar tone, and I’d have to agree: the dinner leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not a bad spot, but definitely not the standout it wants to be.
