Make reservations. I wish their web site indicated reservations recommended. We got there 8 minutes after opening on a Thursday. We were lucky enough to get a small table, but others had to wait. It would have been worth a wait. Great country steakhouse. The steaks are cooked to perfection. Your meal comes with a small veggie tray, shrimp cocktail, salad, potato or grilled vegetables, garluc bread and ice cream or sherbet. I love the extra plate menu item. For $18.00 I got everything on a meal without the steak. I don't eat much meat so i got the extra plate and my husband ordered a steak big enough for me to have a couple of slices. Great tasting steak. The grilled vegetables were excellent. It was worth the drive from Avila Beach. We will return next year on our visit to Avila.
Fantastic food in great service. This restaurant is totally worth the drive from Santa Maria.
A few days ago we stopped by again; it was too early but the door was open and we went to the bar for a drink. We both enjoyed a delicious "the Allen" and can highly recommend it. Even though we had no reservation, we were seated shortly after 4. Dinner was great; we shared a rack of baby back ribs, wonderfully seasoned and tender, vegetables, salad.and ice cream for dessert. The waiter was very attentive and gave us plenty of time to enjoy our dinner. All the while many other customers kept coming in and the place filled up quickly. We would definitely recommend this unique restaurant and the drive from Thousand Oaks to Casmalia is very beautiful too!!
Everyone knows they are the best steaks, hands down. Their seafood is better than any seafood house on the central coast. The service is amazing, bar is great. Our favorite restaurant!
Errrrehhhh ladies and gents! My first time going to the Hitching Post got me hooked! They have a delicious Linguista that is cooked beautifully! Their steaks will also not disappoint. I like mine a little above rare and it was amazing! The waitress and bartender Angi was professional, attentive, and very kind, couldn't have asked for a better rep! Food does come in waves (appetizer, salad, meal, dessert, hot beverage) so be prepared to pace yourself. On average a dish is around $50 but the food is well worth the price!
Best experience ever! Chef was amazing and so personable! Food was beyond my expectations! Everyone was so friendly! I’m from Tennessee cannot wait to come back to The Hitching Post!
I was in Santa Maria for work. I was told to go to the Hitching Post for a great steak. I was not disappointed! I love the fact this restaurant is off the beaten path in Casmalia. I went on a Tuesday evening for dinner. It might be off the beaten path, but it’s definitely well known; they had a good dinner crowd. I sat at the bar. The bartender provided phenomenal service. I ordered a filet mignon with grilled vegetables as my two side. You also get a fresh vegetable tray and a small shrimp cocktail as starters. Garlic bread with your meal. Ice Cream for dessert and coffee or tea. I actually had iced tea with my meal and coffee with my ice cream. They cook the meat over an open pit BBQ inside the restaurant/kitchen. You can watch them cook through a large window next to the BBQ. Everything was delicious. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The grilled vegetables were fantastic — mushrooms, bell peppers, onions; it was done like a kebab. I wish I lived closer, but I’ll definitely go back anytime I’m in the area.
Went for birthday dinner, it feels like it’s in the middle of no where. This was last minute decision so had no reservations which are recommended. The place was absolutely packed yet we were able to find a parking spot. They were able to squeeze us in at the bar after a short wait which was awesome points #1. While we waited out back in their patio we brought drinks from The bar which helped pass the time. Garden is decorated cute and there are some seats. I got the sirloin and scallops which include an appetizer of veggies, shrimp cocktail and salad. After the main course, dessert and coffee or tea (awesome point 2, 3 & 4). The steak was cooked to perfection, I got medium rare. I haven’t had such a perfectly cooked steak in … at least the last 8 years. The scallops perfectly done and not chewy at all. Great flavor. (Awesome point 5, 6 & 7). Staff checks in on you periodically and takes plates as you finish. (Awesome points 8+) Overall impressed. Very happy we decided to stop in and thankful to be seated without reservation.
If you are a fan of Jocko's you are gonna live this cowboy restaurant. The fish tray that you used to get at Jockos is once again on your menu. I had a steak and my date had the lobster tail and we shared. Huge lobster tail and perfectly cooked. Tha grilled artichoke is not to be missed. The meal also includes a shrimp cocktail and a crispy fresh salad. Do not go to this place unless you are really hungry. Just a great date nite experience.
I recently dined at The Hitching Post, and I have to say, it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, but what really stood out was Chef Luis. He went above and beyond to make us feel like family, offering genuine hospitality that made the evening feel special. And then there was the steak... Hands down, the best steak I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and bursting with flavor. You could tell that Chef Luis takes great pride in his work each bite was absolutely melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The seasoning was spot on, enhancing the natural flavor of the meat without overpowering it. The service was top-notch as well attentive without being overbearing. It’s rare to find a place that combines exceptional food with such heartfelt hospitality. If you're looking for a steakhouse experience that’s not just about great food but also about feeling genuinely cared for, The Hitching Post is the place to go. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!
It really was that great. Went two times in a week to see how consistent they were, and they are, very consistent. Such great steak for the money. Ice cream flavors rotate out too!! Also the stray cat outside, I don't know what his name is, but i Nicknamed him "Scratchy" he's always by the front door ready to greet you lol.
As a tourist from Austria with a deep appreciation for a good steak, I have to say: The Hitching Post absolutely nailed it. Everything about the experience was smooth and spot-on. No frills, no fuss - just excellent service and even better food. The steaks were perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and clearly high quality. You know when you take the first bite and you just know you’re in for a good evening? That was it. The staff was professional and attentive without being overbearing, and the atmosphere had just the right balance of relaxed and refined. No single over-the-top moment - just consistently great service and an obvious pride in what they do. If you’re anywhere nearby and love a proper steak, do yourself a favor and go. This place delivers exactly what you’re hoping for when you walk into a steakhouse - and then some :)
The place is out in the middle of nowhere, where there is no cell service, which is alright because it provides an opportunity to connect with the people you dine with. I went to Hitching Post on my birthday with co-workers, and we all enjoyed our meal. Our streaks were seasoned and cooked to perfection. For a 4 course steak dinner meal, you can't beat the price and quality of the food and level of service. Reservations are highly recommended as this place can fill up quickly. Two thumbs up!
The Hitching Post in Casmalia is a beautiful, rustic establishment! The food is expertly cooked and plated, the portions are hearty and the food fresh! We were lucky to be seated in front of the BBQ Pit and got to watch everything being cooked. Best steak and Lobster I've ever had, and you should definitely get the Artichoke Heart appetizer!
First time in "THE HITCHING POST" this place was recommended by a friend. I had to put this place to the test. I ordered a t bone steak, which was marvelous and perfectly cooked. The taste was rich, and it met almost all my expectations. It had a little bit of chewy sections of meat. The customer service was incredible . I could not believe that the prices in the menu were so affordable. They include a salad, veggies, coffee, and a small yet delicious shrimp cocktail. There is plenty ty of parking. (This review is not paid by the restaurant)
The place is like going back in time. About 1/2 mile away your cell phone may get no service. Don’t let the old time rustiness fool you. The steaks and other food are worth the drive from Lompoc or surrounding area. But, go when you are hungry because it is a full three course meal. However, if you need to save room for the Ice Cream Sunday at the end you can split your meal. There is a fee for splitting but you can even get your own baked potato ($18). Highly recommend the Fillet. If you get there early enough you can sit near the open grill and watch them cooking it.
We came here for a family celebration and their staff was amazing with our party of 6, including a handicapped participant. They ensured we were all comfortable and well taken care of. Overall all our entire experience here was great. Their concept is so great, most steakhouses make you pay out the nose for every step of your meal. Their course inclusive meal is refreshing, even if it’s a vintage model. Loved everything part of my meal. Their shrimp cocktail was tasty, my steak was cooked to perfection, and their homemade ice cream was soooooo good!! Also their martini was perfect and their house wine delicious. Overall I can’t recommend this spot enough, and I can’t wait until my next visit!
I tried both places and liked the Buellton site better. Not a bad experience at all. Service was great. Long Island was great. Seemed a wonderful place to take family for a night out. I could see the grill, which was interesting. The main course was very good. I got the ribeye. Salad, shrimp cocktail, and dessert were lackluster, but that’s not why I went. I'd go to HP1 for a family dinner, and HP2 for date night.
Spent New Year’s here! Usually the food is really good, but I think they were trying to get a lot of food out and our steaks was undercooked. It was one stage undercooked. The smoking of the vegetables and the seafood was delicious! The artichoke is always a great go to appetizer!
I had really high expectations because I’d heard such great things, but honestly it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. The shrimp cocktail they served was eh... the shrimp were served lukewarm, and the quality just wasn't there. Plus, the sauce was way sweeter than I expected. The salad was also pretty basic; it felt like something you’d get at a Golden Corral. As for the mains, the Sirloin was cooked perfectly, but the flavor itself was just okay. The lobster was a huge disappointment... it was surprisingly tough/hard to eat. Filet mignon was actually great! If you’re getting steak here, definitely go with the filet. Our server (I think her name was Amy or Emily?) was super sweet and fast. The vibe is very chill and laid-back. But just a heads-up. It's in the middle of nowhere, so I had no service on my phone. Personally I wouldn't go visit again but since this is popular restaurant, I would still recommend my friends to visit
This was our second time going to the Hitching Post with unfortunately the same experience both times. We arrived on time with a reservation for 2 and waited about 15 minutes to be seated. I consider this to be not to bad. They attempted to seat us at a very small table against a wall in a corner. After looking around it appears they cater mainly to larger groups of 4 or more people, with few tables for 2. They are a large restaurant with 2 big rooms and a couple small rooms, all crowded with tables. We felt like we were being rushed all night with our main course arriving before we even finished our salads and appetizers. The food was practically thrown on the table with the servers in a hurry to move on. The steaks were okay, but in my opinion not as good as I would like from a highly rated steak house. Based on our two similar experiences, I think the restaurant is over-rated for the service and food.
For the price - was expecting far better food than what we had. Our total was $129 for two entrees and two lemonades. I wish i would have served my wife with crab legs and store bought steak at home for that price… The entire serving staff seemed tired and just… blah… I expected the ribs to fall off the bone - they were anything but. We were really excited to try this place and have a new favorite to take family and friends to but it WAS NOT worth the hype. I could see how it used to be a great spot, but it is past it’s prime. We will not be going back.
