Used to come to Monterey on the weekends growing up. The Little Chicken house was always one of my favorite places to get some local food from. I've literally eaten from here at least once a year for my entire life of 29 years as of writing this. I don't live close enough to Monterey any more to come as often, but when we used to go each weekend I would almost always have a meal here. The owners are really nice guys, everything is their family recipe (at least the meats are), and it's always been nice seeing them. They have a good life story, and this restaurant is their entire focus for the last few decades. The real star of the menu is the chicken. As the places name suggests, that's the specialty and why you should eat here. Yes they have other meat options, but those can sometimes be hit or miss and not always available each day. As they don't run the smoker out front everyday anymore. The chicken though is cooked on this central rotisserie inside using local oak logs. One of my favorite pieces is the wings when you order a full or half chicken. They get perfectly crispy and we'll seasoned, they leave the wing tips on as well and that's the best part. Then you get to the rest of the chicken and it's just exactly how you'd expect perfect bbq rotisserie chicken to be. Eat it hot and fresh or you'll lose some of that crispy skin. Whatever seasoning they use on the chicken is really the secret to it's success. That combined with the oak smoke. Are they objectively the best bbq around? Probably not if we're being honest. Yet when I'm craving some bbq chicken, this place is the only option for me. It's like having a home cooked meal for me, it's childhood. Plus on a good day, their chicken does become objectively better than everyone else around (they are pretty consistent overall though, but it's a two man team and some days they are just good instead of great). The Little Chicken House is forever a happy place for me, and always brings me back home to childhood memories of Monterey and Pacific Grove. Keep these guys around, give them some business when you can. They earned it.

The Little Chicken house is a fantastic restaurant. I've been twice and tried almost the entire menu. Everything, from the pork to the sausage to the brisket, was delicious. The owners clearly care about making their food the right way.

Be prepared to wait, but be prepared to be rewarded for your wait with delicious ribs and chicken (and other stuff, but thats what I got) chicken and ribs were both falling off the bone. The sauce was delicious, not spicy, not too tangy. I recommend stopping by.

Great food, good prices, large servings, pleasant employees. Couldn't ask for more! We were on vacation and in this area for 3 days. We got food from there two nights. Best we ate on our 12 day trip!

THIS is one of my favorite restaurants! THIS GUY has a small chicken snack that looks like and old MCDONALDS or something. He has an enormous rotisserie where he makes incredible rotisserie chicken! He also has a grill out front where he cooks ribs, that are TO DIE for! AN excellent BAR B Q sauce, with a variety of vegetables or cole slaw! If drive a hundred miles for these ribs!

Will a trip to Monterey grab some food here before you went to the beach It was really awesome. Taste was good fast and price was great.

It looked like a little place and we almost drive right by but the kids were hungry. OMG! I am so happy we stopped! The best rotisserie chicken and the ribs, although fatty, were full of flavor! The BBQ sauce is perfect so make sure you ask for it. Mac and cheese was good- hard to mess that up and the corn bread and garlic bread were perfection! We ordered more fries. On the reals, best bbq chicken and ribs on this side of the bay all the way down to Hollister. A+++++ you heard!

Super good food for a reasonable price! When you walk in, you are greeted by the fire grill and roasters where they cook the meat. My husband and I got the ribs and they were delicious. The service was a little slow, but the food was so good that it was worth it. Just a hole in the wall local place with really solid barbecue.

Absolutely amazing food !!! I'm so glad we found this place. It's a small little place with few tables. But the food was super yummy. Their roasted chicken was super moist n well cooked!!! The staff was very nice and food was served in less than 5 minutes!They have a drive through so if you r in a hurry, you can stop here for some awesome food on the go. The most delicious chicken you can find in the town.

This has been a required stop each visit for decades. We always look forward to a ribs, chicken, fries and beans meal down at the beach across from the golf course. Now, my granddaughters have grown and made Little Chicken House a ritual visit. We’ve gotten to know and talk to the owner over the years. Portions and prices are perfect. Wood smoked ribs and chicken have always been appreciated. The drive through is quirky but this place proves sometimes the “hole in the wall” places are best. Ocean, arts and Little Chicken House on the beach. The best of California!

Authentically great on-site roasting - our meal was so great, we couldn't stop eating long enough to post a "before" photo! The Garlic Bread was actually "gah-lick!" yummy. Great fresh vegetables, nice macaroni salad, made with large elbow mac.this is the only place we've been to that also includes the neck... Nicely roasted, not yet crispy, a real delicacy. Next time - brisket!

Got half chicken and half rack of ribs with potatoes salad corn bread and fries food was delicious.

This place is really underated, the people there are lovely specially the guy from Salvador. I ordered brisket and beans, it wasn't the best brisket I had in the US but for the price you just can't complain! Definitely going back!

I've been coming here for years and I have yet to be disappointed. It's a great inexpensive local place with a home backyard BBQ feel. If you come in with these expectations you'll have a great time!

You feel like a guest when you come to the little chicken house... Very attentive to service with a smile. Portion size is very large for the price. I had the chicken and hot links as two and got two sides. They're always making sure your drinks were full.

A friend suggested Little Chicken House while I was in Monterey. I have to say I was very impressed with the food and the kind hearted server. I will go back every chance I have.

Good place for a quick stop. The food feels just a bit better than a fast-food. The Coke was a bit watery. The personal didn't seem to speak English a lot but seemed nice. Not too bad overall.

I enjoyed my hot links and the bbq beef. My wife had fall off the bone ribs. BBQ sauce is good and the sides we had were yummy. Mac o Cheese, Mashed Potatoes and BBQ Beans. We did the drive thru and received excellent service.

I purchased the Two Way combo with ribs, chicken, macaroni and cheese and fries. The ribs were absolutely great, fall-off-the-bone style and the sauce was a sweet and smoky sauce that had a tomato taste to it. The chicken was excellently baked and the chicken skin with their sauce was amazing. Contrarily, the macaroni and cheese and fries were poor in my opinion, they could use work. We eat there about twice a month. Rotisserie chicken is consistently good, pork is Ok, but brisket is up and down. Good sides -- potato salad, BBQ beans, corn bread. Cash or credit card.

Brisket was tough and so was the chicken. BBQ sauce was very watery and lacked flavor. Salad came straight out the bag with hidden valley ranch and mac n cheese was straight macaroni with cheese and absolutely no seasoning. They were nice enough to comp our meal even after we insisted on paying several times they refused to take our money. I really wanted to like the place but it was the worst bbq I’ve had in a very long time but Monterey isn’t exactly the bbq now capital is it?

The quarter chicken was delicious. It was a first for ordering a side of Mac n cheese and receiving penne pasta covered in shredded cheddar.

The chicken is great and very convenient but WAY overpriced, especially given the roadhouse feel of the place. Ribs and beef are ok too. It's just hard to go back when 2 nearby grocery stores sell rotiserie chicken for half the price.

Super nice guys working here, but the food quality just isn’t high enough. Fatty ribs (not in the good way), mac and cheese was literally just noodles with melted cheese mix, and Cole slaw didn’t have much flavor. Bbq sauce was watery and bland. Generally I love supporting old school bbq joints like this but the meal was disappointing.

Fast service for the drive through. The man who helped me was very friendly. The BBQ chicken sandwich was fresh and hot. The semi shredded chicken was bland w no BBQ flavor. It was plain chicken with BBQ sauce poured on it. I've had other items here that were much better.

Ordered the two way, chicken sandwich and pulled pork sandwich combo. The sandwiches and fries were pretty good my kids enjoyed them. The ribs were undercooked and the BBQ beef was overcooked. The mac n cheese was kinda hard to eat because it dried up and binded itself together. Because of the good prices, I will give it another try.

Uhh, this was a fail for me. I guess the translation of "bbq" depends on what part of the states you're from. I didn't enjoy the chicken or the BBQ sandwich. The Mac and cheese was not bad. I ordered the 3 meat combo and 2 sides. I thought for sure this BBQ was going to be the bomb for having been here so long. I have never tried it and my aunt moved down the street about 30 years ago. So my meat selection was brisket ribs and hot link. You can tell these ribs were boiled before being put on the grill. So yes they were moist but flavor wise it's missing as I would call Sazon. The hot link was OK but kinda on the small size. The brisket I would prefer Dickeys over here. I would hate to think this is the best BBQ in Monterey bay. Oh my sides were coleslaw and baked beans. Cole slaw tastes store bought and the beans taste like Canned beans. Will I try again? Hmmm maybe to try the chicken. They are fast to serve through the drive through.

Large portions does not make BBQ any better. I will try their whole chicken next time as this comes right off the rotisserie thus it's not held in the back of the house. The staff very friendly! Enjoy

I was pretty disappointed with this place considering how authentic it looked/smelled. You can smell the scent of the barbecue from the street and it sort of lures you in. I had the brisket and some french fries. The brisket was swimming in sauce and just a little bland still somehow, while the fries were a pile of inedible mush.

We had chicken and pork and it was ok. Nothing great about it which was really disappointing because I was hoping for it to be amazing. When we walked in it smelled great and we couldn't wait to try it but what we found was just chicken and pork. Nothing special, we could have made it at home for far less money. Will be trying again as I want it to be good but as of now i am not a fan.

3-9-25: Tried for the very first time with my girlfriend. Ordered 1/4 Chicken with Baked Beans and Garlic Bread; 2 meats combo (Chicken & Ribs) with Coleslaw & Baked Beans. Baked Beans weren’t Baked Beans (more like out of a can Pork & Beans} Chicken was extremely dry! Hardly any sauce! Napkins were still white because there wasn’t any BBQ sauce. Ribs just like the Chicken NO SAUCE! Not flavorful at all!

Awful service. Overpriced. Low amount of food. Food was only moderately good. And, for the price, it's insulting to be served food on styrofoam plates with plastic spoons. Avoid this place and go somewhere else. I strongly DO NOT recommend.

Worst food I have ever eaten, besides that the waiter service was bad, I don’t really know why people go back to that place.

This place is flat out not good. Also not BBQ. I had to ask what the “sauce” they literally poured all over all of the meat was. They said it was bbq sauce but it was essentially watered down ketchup. Their turkey tasted like it had been sitting around all day and was hard and tuff- same with the brisket which wasn’t even brisket meat. The chicken was decent and the only thing i would ever think about getting again (but not after what we saw when we were leaving. Read below) Their Mac n cheese was penne noodles with a tiny bit of cheese melted on top. Their mashed potatoes were not seasoned whatsoever. I made the mistake and walked to the back to wash my hands and the kitchen is SO unsanitary. And then as we were leaving they came out and hung a raw rotisserie chicken rack on the TOP of all of the cooked ones and managed to rub the raw chicken on the top 2 rungs of cooked chicken. This place needs to be shut down by the health inspectors because I truly worry I got food poisoning or salmonella tonight. Needless to say we didn’t take more than a few bites and left and will never be back.

Just left, got down the road about 2 mins later to eat it, and I'm here to say it was all horrible. I got a hotlink lunch, with Mac n cheese. The bun was worthless since it was sopping wet, fries were cold, mac and cheese was dry as can be, and the link itself was ok. Ended up only eating the link, and it def wasn't a $15-ok hotlink. Definitely not coming back for any sides, but would give the chicken a try... It's smell is what drew me to the place.

We tried this place and it was disappointing. My bf and I got the brisket and pork sandwiches. The meat was very bland and nothing could fix the brisket. We are not going to return here. The sevice was ok.

The only good quality about this place is that I didn’t get sick from it afterword. The ribs were way over cooked, the sauce on the chicken is flavorless, and their Mac-and-cheese is literally cheddar sprinkled on dry noodles. I was pretty convinced it’s a front by the time I left. Save your money.

WORST BBQ I’VE EVER HAD!!! I was so excited to try this place because I love BBQ, but the food was just so so so bad. The owner was friendly and the service was fast (drive thru), but not worth it at all. I got the beef and the ribs with Mac n cheese, and everything was cold and looked days old. The meat was dry and disgusting and the Mac n cheese was hard and dry. Literally the worst bbq, potentially even the worst food, I’ve ever received from a restaurant. Seriously, this is my first ever food review. I wasn’t going to say anything, but I fasted all day for this food and was so excited to try it and it couldn’t have been any worse. Maybe it’s because I went through the drive-thru, but still.

I do not claim to be an expert on barbecue, but I do know quality and taste ,unfortunately, this had to be the worst pork ribs I have ever had in my life fatty ,tough ,flavorless ,no smoke flavor whatsoever it was like they been cooked in the gas oven ,they even had a weird smell to them. We threw them in the trash.I mean it was bad really bad

This place is terrible! We ordered the brisket and a rib plate. First the brisket plate it does not tell you it's a "sandwich" dry meat, very little bbq sauce. Mashed potatoes cold and dry even with the gravy. Baked beans, ha, these were nasty pork and beans without pork and without flavor. Rib plate okay ribs but the Mac and cheese no flavor, clumpy and cold. We took our order to our hotel which is literally 3 minutes away by car. We get there and the foods cold. The containers are paper, good for the environment but bad for food. I can't say anything good about this place.

So customer service is not to bad, but the BBQ sauce was watered down the the beef was gross. Chicken breast was ok but then was given a dried chicken wing that can't even be eaten. There Mac and cheese is just noodles with microwaved cheese on it which was disgusting. The potatoes salad was good only because you can tell it's store bought. I will never come back to this place.

This place is disgusting, and that's not just the food I'm talking about. The people working here are rude and dismissive. Do you want to feel like you're wasting their time by trying to buy some of their dry, unflavored, poorly cooked filth? Then come on by! Honestly this food reminded me of a grade school cafeteria having a "BBQ day". Enjoy your piece of chicken on a hamburger bun with some BBQ sauce, Billy. Don't be late for class! Overpriced, poorly cooked, not very clean, incredibly rude staff. Maybe they should consider putting as much work into the restaurant itself as they did into the jury-rigged contraption in the middle of the restaurant that is designed specifically for drying out chicken to the point of being inedible. As a bonus, the thing doesn't even rotate the way it's supposed to. That's cool. A real mechanical marvel. If you are a BBQ lover don't come here. Honestly, don't come to California. Avoid this restaurant at all costs.

Had a BBQ pork sandwich and it tasted old and funky and borderline not edible! Could not eat it or the fries!! Very sorry to leave such a negative review, but I would avoid eating here!!

Order both chicken and beef bbq for take out. Got it back to our cottage and all of it was disgusting. This is the worst bbq i have had in my 50+ years of eating bbq. Just horendous. We actually ended up throwing about 90% of it out and ordering from aomewhete else.

This place is horrible. The worse BBQ ive ever had. Ribs were fatty and the mac and cheese was just pasta and cheese... no flavor! The service was not good either. Took a long time to be acknowledged and then forgot the drinks when the food was serviced. Do not go there if you know good BBQ. Would never go back or recommend!

We're from out of town & always wanted to try this place. Sadly, it was not a good experience. We ordered the 1/2 rack of ribs, bbq pork, Mac & cheese, potatoe salad, coleslaw & bbq sauce. Everything was tasteless/bland. Adding salt to it just made it salty & bland. The bbq sauce was like water. Worst $60 we've ever spent. Wish I could give 0 stars

This review is for anybody getting food to go (maybe dine-in is better?) This was the WORST FOOD we have ever been given in the last 20 years of traveling. It was by far the worst BBQ we have ever seen or tasted. We totally agree with the previous review that received take-out that was so bad they just threw it away. We ordered 1 of the the 3 meat plate (Pork, Chicken, Ribs) with fries and cornbread (about $29). The pork was days old, dry, and tough. The chicken was also old and tough. The ribs were the worst without much meat on them at all. All 3 meats were slathered with a red colored sauce that absolutely had no flavor! It wasn't sweet, salty, spicy, or even like ketchup, it was just red and wet. The meats we were given should have just been thrown out. I can't imagine this place can stay in business giving this kind of food to their drive-through customers. It may have been because we had out of state plates and they knew we wouldn't be back, but hopefully enough of us leave honest reviews to help others avoid this place. SERIOUSLY, avoid this place as ANY OTHER FOOD would have been so much better.

I got the 2 meat meal with 2 sides and it was ALL bad. Fries were WAY overcooked. Mac and cheese was bland and like they literally put shredded cheese on noodles then microwaved it. The ribs and chicken tasted like gas or something off and had this nasty tomatoey wanna be BBQ sauce all over them and it was all sloppily thrown in a container. I wanted to bad to like it, so much so that even after pulling over to eat immediately, I tried again when I got home and couldn’t stomach it. 0/10 Don’t recommend 👎🏻

We decided to try this place on a whim while out running errands. It was dreadful. There were only two couples there other than us. The staff treated us like they were absolutely swamped, even though they were milling around at a snail's pace. We walked up to the register and a man immediately slid a menu onto the counter and pointed at it without saying a word and then seemed annoyed when we took more than 10 seconds to decide. I guess in response to us taking a couple minutes to order, they decided to take 10 minutes to throw our food into boxes. Maybe they were having an off day, but wow. Wow. Even aside from treating customers like an inconvenience, the place is terrible. They have the menu and prices of a great BBQ place, but the food quality of a single parent's rushed weeknight dinner. I do wonder how they managed to make jerky out of brisket. Turns out it's also possible to mummify ribs. For reference, I've included a photo of my "bbq" chicken sandwich (10.99 I think it was). You be the judge.
