Amazing food, go early for BBQ, as they may run out later in the evening. Everything is reasonably priced and the beer is awesome. Staff is super friendly and helpful, just a warning though it's CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM if it's working.
This is a great brewery only a stones throw from NYC. There are always a ton of beers on tap, most if not all being actual Defiant brews. Just visited for the second time this past weekend. Cash only, with an ATM onsite...recommend one person from your group takes money out and the rest venmo that person - incur as few fees as possible! The outdoor space is a really nice touch. It may overlook train tracks, but the picnic tables allow you to get some fresh air while trying all of the beers. The service is prompt and friendly. This last time we visited, it was with a much larger group - we sat inside because of the chill in the air. They offer games for a refundable $5 deposit which can make your time here extra fun. We played Uno with our group of 11. We ordered a Monster plate - you have GOT TO TRY their BBQ. The wings are out of this world good. The brisket is always tender and the perfect amount of fatty. The Ribs are a close second for me behind the wings - they're so big and meaty and perfectly smoked. The pulled pork has been a bit dry each time we've been, but they're awesome hot bbq sauce helps with that. Their corn bread is tasty, and their mac and cheese is CRAZY good. We also successfully rang up a $550 bill by the end of the night...but we spent a good 6 hours there. We went halloween weekend, and they played Young Frankenstein and Rocky House of Horrors, how can you leave when they're playing the classics and serving decent beers? We watched as the contestants to their halloween costume party arrived and mingled, which was sometimes hilarious and sometimes horrifying - nice halloween combination. They offer $1000 to the best costume - I think we all mentally noted that we need to be back with our A-game next year. Beers were decent. Nothing that blew my mind, but nothing that was not up to par. I enjoyed their lighter Hefe most and their pumpkin ale was my runner up. We always have a great time talking, laughing and throwing some back here. It shares a parking lot with Metro North...but driving is easy and the route is beautiful from NYC. Highly highly recommend coming here, over ordering food and spending quality time with amazing people. It gets me every time.
Fan of the defiant triple, so it prompted us to check out the brewery. Awesome barbecue and great beers. Bartenders were very accommodating. We really enjoyed ourselves. Can’t wait to stop there again!
Man, where do I start? I probably come here on average once a week sometimes twice if the tap list is really good. The beer selection is usually good, sometimes I want to try 5 or 6 beers, other nights I stick to my favorites (Baron Von Weizen looking at ypu). Then there's the food. The dry rub wings are some of my favorites and the other smoked meats are also good. They've got a good charcuterie board and bacon/Mac and cheese tacos are really tasty. Last but certainly not least is the lovely staff. As shameless semi-regulars we've gotten to know a few people there and they are all very nice. Trivia on Thursday nights is also really fun.
A great bear selection, and if you love barbecue , you won't be disappointed by the food either. I love the atmosphere and never had any complaints about the service. Everyone was very friendly. One of those places you keep going back to.
If you are a beer connoisseur then you have to go to Defiant Brewery! Some of the best beer you will ever taste. Extremely knowledgeable bartenders, seasonal brews and great food. Very friendly and very relaxed atmosphere. And the best damn wings in Rockland County!
Great atmosphere and awesome beers. The BBQ is really up there with some of the best including that of the Salt Lick in Texas. I bring my whole family including the kids. Good times
Jen’s the best! Took care of all of us and gave great recommendations. Thanks jen!!!
Arrived for dinner. The place has a very rustic steam punk vibe and is currently decorated for Halloween. Very cool place to hang out. We tried a variety of their drinks and found every one to be delicious. We had ribs, corn bread, mac and cheese, cole slaw, and potato salad. Everything delicious and the staff friendly.
Easily one of the best breweries I have been to! The choices of drinks are great, and the food is amazing! I can never have enough of their Smoked chicken and mac and cheese! It can get a bit crowded at times, but it's spacious enough that it's not a problem! It is also cash only, so keep that in mind! They do have an atm inside.
The beer here is really good, they shy away from a huge menu of IPAs and have many other styles available, all of which were very tasty. The BBQ is a star at this place though. Had brisket with chili, potato salad, and cornbread. Huge portions and simply fantastically well made. The only drawback is they are cash only. There is an ATM at the brewery, but it will charge you a couple bucks to take anything out. Otherwise, an awesome establishment.
You know it will be a unique experience as soon as you smell the earthy yeast and smoke combination as you walk in the door. Great smoked meats and sides paired with a wide variety of beers. Muddy Creek in particular pairs well with the food. Atmosphere is friendly open space with cornhole and darts as well as board games available. We hung out for hours with our large group (including kids) and will be back soon!
The beer is really good. More like a food to me than a drink. Great variety. Bartenders know their stuff. I love the Keep It Simple design of the entire brewery and experience there. Unfortunately they were out of the pulled pork last Friday, so we went for the wings - which were very meaty, cooked perfectly, and seasoned in a delightfully unusual way (seemed alike a combo of a medium Jamaican jerk type rub and the slow smoking/roasting.). Fantastic. Bought two growlers and will be back. I live just 8 miles or so away but I think I might move closer.
We religiously stop here on our way to visit family and friends in NJ. The staff is always so nice, the beer is great with many selections, and the food is awesome! Not to mention they are great with having you g kids there too. Always a favorite of ours.
Great beer brewed on premises. Wide selection. Their orange cream ale is great during the summer. Staff KNOW their beer. Outdoor seating. But the hidden gem in this place is their BBQ. All of it is good....but their wings are hands down best u have ever had!
Never disappoints, BBQ is one of the best in America, North, South, East and West. Beer is great! Headless Horseman beer is in can now for the season, get it while you can! Great atmosphere, always jamming to classic rock, the soundtrack of my youth!
Amazing as always. I tried 3 different beers as well as a BBQ sampler. I was not disappointed yet again. I highly recommend this place. Great food and the staff is always really cool people who make you feel at home. Highly recommend the BBQ sampler.
Excellent brewery. I love their muddy Creek lager and o'defiant stout. The BBQ spot is excellent too -love their wings. Lots of seating and bar space. Worth a visit! They also have wine, cider & root beer for those who don't want beer or alcohol.
Spacious place with friendly staff and a surprisingly long list of house brews on tap -- including at least 4 IPAs. There are no TVs at the bar, but a large back room had a big wall screen with the World Series playing. The brisket in our sampler was not very good, but everything else was excellent, including the ribs, pulled pork, and especially the smoked wings. The sides were also very good, including the corn bread, chili and mac and cheese.
There's a certain atmosphere you expect from a brewery and beer hall - a stale smell, too-loud music, salty snack offerings to keep you drinking. Defiant has always impressed with its exceptionally clean building, wonderful classic rock sound, and thoughtfully crafted BBQ menu. They're following along with the trend and popularity of IPA's, but have never slacked on delicious and crisp lagers for those who don't always want a flavor bomb or to have their beer punch them right in the face when they take a sip. I've been there many times, and I will continue going back whenever I have the chance.
One of the best brewery that I have visited. Defiant had a small place when I visited for the first place which makes the place get crowded quickly. But ever since they expanded, there is more room to chill with friends. The staff is knowledgeable about the beers on tap and their menu is definitely a meat-lovers dream. Definitely try their smoked wings and brisket. They have a big area at the back with projector screen and would usually have sports on. They also have bean bag toss if you get bored sitting down.
Really cool brewery! Great variety and great service! Good BBQ too! Plenty of space in this cool old building. Fake News Neipa was pretty good. Hefeweizen was delicious. Season IPA was really good too. 2 hours will be a bit of a drive from home but well worth it and get a hotel room nearby!
I went there with my brother, he likes craft beers and smoked meats and I do a lot of smoking myself. We had the ample sampler, everything on that tray was delicious. I've made a brisket years ago and it didn't turn out like yours, I'm going back to the drawing board to try it again. I give a big thumbs up for your place.
Excellent beer and atmosphere. It is now a regular spot I'll visit when I come to town.
I stopped in for a beer, first time here. The owner was friendly and welcoming. I'll be back. Update: I had the BBQ for the first time. It was unbelievably good. Ribs, Brisket, Pulled Pork, Chili, Cole Saw, Smoked beans. Everything on the plate was excellent. This is the real deal BBQ!
What a great place! Best beer, nice people, good food!
The drinks are great, the food is great! But the staff is the BEST, especially Dave! I lost something here and called Defiant the next day, and Dave was super patient and understanding of my panic. Not only did he find what I lost, but he was incredibly kind and I am super appreciative!!!!
Can we talk about the owner for a bit? He is legitimately the sweetest most attentive person I have ever met. Our group of four, stumbled at Defient brewing co. on a Friday in Memorial Day weekend, and the owner was the most attentive, sweetest host imaginable. The beer was fresh, crisp and undoubtedly delicious. We’re from Connecticut, but we’ll be visit soon for sure! One-thousand percent recommend! Love this place! ❤️
Really nice energy and vibes, exactly what I want from a brewery. You walk in and there’s tons of seating, and then a large open room in the back that they had the game playing on a projector screen, along with dart boards and lots of other games. I can see this being great for events and large group get togethers. The beer’s good, and their brisket is excellent. Really nice ambiance and value for money. Great place to spend an easy afternoon
Great brewery, James the bartender was sensational and a pleasure to speak with. Beer was great. Atmosphere was good and pricing is good. Can't speak anymore highly of this place, even the neighborhood around it is gorgeous as well. Definitely recommend this to anyone in the area, next time I'm in NYS I will be back absolutely.
Good craft beer. Brew master/owner is usually there and has excellent back stories regarding the business, his beers, and his passion. While you are there, order a NY style pie from Russo's Pizza. Go there! Atmosphere is fun!
I love this brewery so much. The place is really big when you walk in that is the main area you go up to the counter to order and if you need samples they provide you with some which is really nice. The prices are great. If you walk towards the back there’s a huge place to sit and eat and also sometimes they have a band playing which is very nice as well. The great thing about this place is that they’re not overly crowded lotta times so it’s very nice to go with your friends and be able to talk and mingle and relax. The beers are so good and amazing. I’d recommend this place to anyone! Great place to go to any day of the week.
Very cool place to hang. Decent beer selection and the food was really good. There is plenty of space for groups. The outdoor seating is my favorite. Three of us shared the Alamo (I think that’s the name) platter for $48 and it was just the right amount of food. Also, they have a sauce that is in a ketchup bottle, so some people stayed away from it, you should know it’s NOT ketchup and you’re missing out if you don’t try it.
Great beer at a great spot! Neill really knows his stuff, he can give the backstory to every one of his excellent brews - and he’s got something for every taste! Definitely recommend dropping by for some games, maybe food, and definitely quality beer 👍
This place is truly a treasure. As many breweries limited themselves to very few styles of beer, Defiant goes against the grain and offers many. All delicious. A recent visit on xmas eve had us trying stouts, Christmas ales, Oktoberfest, Belgium triple, and many more. While I enjoy all they have to offer in BBQ, their smoked wings stand out the most. They are simply the best wings I have ever had. I sound like a fan boy because I truly am. Located right across the Pearl River Train station makes a day trip to Defiant from NYC a no-brainer.
Just over the NY State line from NJ, Defiant Brewery in Pearl River, NY. There are many beers to choose from. BBQ is also available on certain days, otherwise there is no food available, but several restaurants in the area. I enjoyed the Headless Horseman Pumpkin Ale @ 5.7%. "Pumpkiny" to a point then dead stop! Not overbearing like some others out there. Also had a very enjoyable 10 oz. New England IPA, not "piney" tasting. Brewmaster/owner, Neil Acer knows what he's doing for the past 17 years. The brewery is located literally across the tracks from the MetroNorth/NJ Transit station on the Pascack Valley Line.
Nice selection on tap! Nice friendly atmosphere too! Tom(brewmaster), Sean, and Mike are always ready to Serve up some Delicious Beer to tantalize and intrigue your tastebuds 😊 Good barbecue ‘homemade style’ food.
I can't say enough great things about Defiant! Last week we hosted a small wedding reception and it was perfect. We were able to do anything we wanted with the space we had (we didn't rent the entire place, just a few tables). The food was great, as usual! The beers and other drinks were great and the price was so reasonable! We were able to use all the games at the brewery, and we were even able to play Terminator 2 on the projector which was a major bonus. The staff was truly wonderful which made everything even better. The owner, the cook, and the bartender were all so friendly and helpful. I couldn't have asked for a better place to have a casual, and intimate wedding. Thank you guys SO much!
Pearl River's Hottest Brewery is Defiant. LITERALLY Wow! You know how sometimes you cannot decide whether you want to go to a local brewery OR sit inside a sauna🥵? Well, now you can have the best of both worlds: At Defiant Brewing Co. Sip on one of their MANY original beers (unless they're out of most of them which they seem to be lately) while sweating out all of those nasty toxxxins🏖️. Surely the money they are saving on that AC bill are passed on to the customer in the form of their great prices! 💰💰💰 ---- Seriously though, a girl literally passed out while I was there last week because it was like 100 degrees inside. I don't know anything about running a business, but I'm guessing ideally you don't want that to happen.
5 stars for Defiant Brewing Co.! Neill, who I believe is the owner, made my experience truly delightful. Located in Pearl River, NY, Defiant Brewing Co. is a haven for beer enthusiasts and creators alike. Crafting outstanding ales and lagers for 16 years, Defiant Brewing Co. is dedicated to challenging the norms of mass-produced beers. Their commitment to quality and innovation shines through in every sip. I had the pleasure of trying the Devine Light beer, and it was easily one of the best light craft beers I've ever tasted. The flavors were exceptional, leaving me eager to explore more of their offerings. The brewery itself is impressively spacious, with ample parking available. The prices are reasonable, making it a great value for the quality of the drinks and experience provided. I'll definitely be returning to Defiant Brewing Co. for more delicious brews and the warm hospitality of Neill and the team. Cheers to a fantastic brewery experience!
Stopped by Pearl River to try the brewery. Got the Christmas ale and it's good. It's a smokehouse so you get a delicious variety to choose from. There are even some vegetarian options to pick from. Parking is limited. It's right next to the Pearl River train station if you're willing take mass transit.
Great BBQ and tasty beers.... Sadly they don't make my favorite one anymore, but they still have a great assortment. The back area with the picnic tables is awesome, especially when they have a live band on.
We stopped in to Defiant one weekend afternoon on a beer tour of the Hudson Valley we found online. We began here and ended up really liking the beer. We unfortunately arrived too early to try any of their food, I guess they only serve at dinner time. The atmosphere was very unassuming, there is basically a long bar and a few tables under the active fermentation tanks. Some of the tanks are even used for serving and the bartender will draft your beer from them. They have a rotating selection and a few regulars. We tried the blonde and the IPA and both were very good. There's something about beer straight from the tank that tastes way better. The service was good as well. We were served right away and the bartender kept checking up on us and told us a little about the history of the brewery and about the beer. The owner even stopped by and talked tous a little about running the place. It had a great local family owned vibe and we'll definitely be back to continue to fill our new growlers.
I come here a few times a year when visiting family in the area. I've had a one star experience and a five star experience. The chilli, wings and brisket are usually excellent but they have over cooked it before, the one star experience being served wings so dry the meat could not be separated from the bones. The beers are usually good but as others have mentioned the stouts are usually a little watery. I also had the worse pilsner I've ever tasted here. I no longer try the assortment and stick with what i like, usually the 9% Belgian triple.
Friendly service and tasty beer, the nachos took 45 minutes and the chips were stale but the brisket on top was awesome. Limited outdoor seating but ample well spaced indoor seating in a very open warehouse type area
They've expanded fairly recently. Once upon a time it was just a cozy hallway with a handful of beers on tap. Now they've cleared out space for biergarten style tables, a kitchen with BBQ, and even more beers. My one complaint for this place has been consistent, and that is that it gets really loud. Maybe it's the structure of the room, but everything reverberates and it makes conversation nigh impossible., especially when a band is playing.
Visited Defiant a few weeks ago and had an amazing time. Their selection on tap was great (with some hilarious names; I got their "Fake News" IPA) and their smokehouse food is PHENOMENAL. With amazing sides and well-cooked briskets and wings, my friends are planning to go back to get the ~$250 Viking feast just to say we did it. Four star rating is because parking can be a bit difficult to find, especially if it's a busy night. Also, service was attentive but a bit delayed because of weekend business.
• Been going here for years when they only served food on certain days of the week. • Overall solid experience, although it has become a bit commercial over the past couple years. Lacks that small local brewery feel. • BBQ is a great value for the price as long as you avoid the samplers. Samplers used to be huge portions. They have drastically cut down on the portion sizes of these menu items over the years. • Terrific quality in regards to their beers. • Large establishment. • Outdoor area. • They hold seasonal events.
Amazing barbeque! Go for the food if you're not interested in the beer. The beer is an added bonus. Good beer I haven't found anything that has blown my mind but definitely some good ones just nothing amazing. Friendly atmosphere, big open clean space. Wish they had more games readily available also the music situation could be greatly improved except when there's live music that's really awesome.
I've been a patron of Defiant prior to its expansion, but have enjoyed coming here all along. I love Defiant for it's craft beers, they have so many original delicious brews and they take great pride in their work. Their food menu has greatly expanded since its only beef jerky days. I didn't enjoy the food on my last trip (except for the teriyaki beef jerky which was EXCELLENT) but they enjoyed their meals. Definitely good snack food. I love the low key atmosphere and the availability of cornhole and darts. Defiant knows how to entertain its crowd :) I now am gluten-free, so I was only able to enjoy the cider, so I hope they add more options soon! Will definitely return.
4 stars primarily for the food. The portions are great and the ribs were awesome in my opinion. Atmosphere is good, lots of space so finding seating wasn't hard. Unfortunately I'd give it a 3.5 for beer, while it isn't necessarily bad, I found the flavours to be a subdued and lacking a little.
The aromas of the brewing and the smoker put you in a good mood as soon as you walk through the door! Excellent beer varieties. Service super friendly. BBQ meats were a bit dry for my taste, but still good. Side dishes were excellent. Will definitely return!
Very large, cavernous interior that can hold a lot of people. I tried a few different varieties of their brews, my favorites of which were the Limonseco and Orange Cream. Sampled the BBQ, which was decent but not the best I've ever had. Overall, solid place with good service and beer.
By far one of the best aesthetics we've witnessed at a local brewery. The train station next to this brewery added to our enjoyment for sure. The bartenders were very engaging and professionals in their trade. The beers were great and food good. We got a sampler and enjoyed the brisket, corn bread and wings the best. The ribs were very close to being done and would have been great with more time. We came early to beat the crowds and make sure we got parking. We were happy with the price tag at the end for all we ate and drank. Don't hesitate to try this place. It has many good features and looks as if it might be growing. We could see why!
The beer definitely is worth the drive. I would recommend to going here to have a few drinks before going out to eat. But the bbq is okay. Only recommend the wings and ribs. The sides aren’t worth ordering
*CASH ONLY* It doesn't mention on their website and in the darker atmosphere I didn't notice the chalk board written note. That being said....the 1 pint would have cost $10 if I did have cash and with having been to hundreds of breweries around the country I can say with confidence that is REALLY expensive for a pint!! With the ease of the square or other card services I am absolutely amazed that this place hasn't joined the modern times and got on board!! I mean....food trucks offer more payment options than this place....definitely a shocker!
I had never even heard of Defiant Brewery until one of my boyfriend's friends decided to have his birthday there one Sunday night (the night that the Giants lost embarrassingly to the Packers). I don't know if they have any brewery tours there, which is what I would normally be interested in, but I spoke to one of the employees there and they said they brew all of their beer on premises. I tried 2-3 of the beers (can't remember which ones but it was the darker and/or higher ABV ones) and I liked them all. Plus, they had pretty good BBQ food, which I did not expect at all. We got the platter that serves around 15 people, which came out to around $30 pp. It had a good variety of things - ribs, wings, beans, mac and cheese, cole slaw, potato salad corn bread. However, all of their meat items seemed to be seasoned with the same spices/sauce so if you don't like the flavor of one thing, you probably won't like the rest. Tip - parking around the back!
Excellent and tremendous beer choices with very good prices. Their food is also very good and mostly along the BBQ, BUT extremely over priced depending on your choice. I bought the Chilli Cheese Frankfurter, it was 12 dollars for a single basic hotdog covered in some chilli. The most any normal human should pay for Is 6 dollars at MOST. It was one single sausage with a basic cheap bun. Honestly it was a rip off to pay 12 dollars for a single small barely filling sausage. Hope nobody ever buys this item again, stick with the wings.
The beer and food is very inconsistent here. Brought people several times and felt bad I dragged people here because of the food and beer. Many times they are pouring a stout out of the tap and it is all foam. Takes like 2 minutes to pour it and what you get is completely flat. I still come back though because I like the atmosphere and when the beer and food are good, they are good.
The beer was great and the indoor area was spacious. The staff were helpful and friendly. The food was the major letdown and I do not suggest eating here for the following reasons: 1. Portions were small, for the 26 dollar platter we got 4 ribs and 2 slices of brisket. We expected much more meat. 2. Sides had too much pepper
Defiant used to be my favorite. Brewery have had great beers and smoke meats. What happened now with this place, not many beers on the menu and smoked wings that I order very hard to eat , dry like a bone with no smoking flavor. Maybe a week old.
Really cool atmosphere and pretty good beer. I found a lot of their beer flavors (especially the fruity ones) really lacking in punch. It seemed like the same flavors just recycled. In fact, my friends accidentally switched their blueberry and raspberry beers and didn't even notice - that's how similar they were. I would love to see more intensity in the flavors. The fruit ale had such a subtle fruit flavor you could easily miss it. I love their Medusa IPA though! So good. Pricing on the beer is pretty standard when compared to other breweries. The BBQ is really great, big portions, but fairly expensive. The tacos are probably the best value on the menu and they are delicious! The cornbread here is some of the best I've ever had. Service is also friendly and fast. I took off a star for the just OK beer and for the fact that they are CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM, but it's a little ridiculous not to take card in this day and age. If we were getting premium pricing, I might understand, but the beer pricing is comparable to other breweries and the food is on the pricey side. Overall, I'll be back!
I miss Defiant circa 2014. Food was much better. I hope they can get back to that. Covid was tough but one thing I will say is Captain Lawrence seemed to have figured out how to recover. New menu items all the time. Beer was still great but that’s about it. I’m in the packaging industry, if I were you I would just make the Pearl River location packaging lines. Close the restaurant. Get some cash flow going and find a new location that can have a better outdoor area like captain lawrence where adults can bring there kids. Also new menu items would help. The bbq was great back in the day but now it comes ice cold and smaller than before.
Decent beer but very few choices I remember coming here a few years ago and there was a wide range of choices. I went today and about 6 months ago, and neither was all that great. Today there were I think six choices on tap - an IPA, a hefeweizen, a kolsch, a pale ale, a sour and a lager. I am an IPA person and the IPA was decent. We have been to a dozen breweries in this area, and this now stands out (repeatedly) as having the fewest choices. It makes it not quite worth it for me to visit unfortunately.
I called in an order for pick-up. My son headed over to get the food. Five minutes later, I get a phone call. " Sorry, we're all out of the ribs. We'll double up on the pulled pork, chicken wings and brisket." But the ribs were what we all really wanted. Couldn't he have told me when I placed the order and give me the option to cancel? So my son returns with the food. One small pan with clumps of barely pulled pork, two small pans of overly spiced chicken wings, two small pans with brisket that was seriously hard to swallow. It was fatty, cut too thick and dry. One little cup of bbq sauce for all of it! Seriously? The four sides weren't enough for the amount of people the menu said this monster special would feed. Barely one cup each. The macaroni and cheese were literally tasteless. No cheese, no flavor at all. The cold slaw was okay. The potato salad was the best as was the corn bread. That's pretty much what I was able to eat out of all of it. 'Never thought I'd ever pay such high prices for corn bread and potato salad! We've had Defiant Brewery food in the past. It used to be exceptional. That was back in 2019 and before. A lot has changed over the years. We won't be risking ordering takeout food from Defiant Brewery again. Truly sad.
I don’t know what happened to this place. My wife and family have been coming for YEARS this place has memories for us they even catered our engagement party because it’s where i first met my in-laws and got turned onto real beer but… despite the rumors I’ve heard lately, still came here and needed to give them a shot. Only 4 beers on tap, from a brewery on LDW and it was 2 sours, a west coast IPA and a seltzer is inexcusable. They have staple beers and i came tonight ready to buy 4 packs of the staples and they had nothing. I have brought beer novices here to teach them about the different type of beers and it was just incredibly disappointing to see what happened to the production of this place. I’m still giving it 3 stars because the food is still delicious and the staff is super friendly and nice but man Defiant, what happened? I honestly hope they get it together soon and return to the brewery i once knew and loved
I was a bit let down with the esthetics and atmosphere, but the beer and service were great! The place looked closed and shady when I entered the parking lot but decided to check it out regardless. I am glad I walked in as once I walked through the dark alley, It opened up into a nice wide forum with a bar on one side and seating all around. The bartender was super friendly and knowledgeable. She recommended a few beers, let me try them until I picked the poison for the day. Wasn't too pleased with their food offering either, but got myself some chips and salsa while enjoying a few more beers and finishing up work.
Been to Defiant twice now and it's one of those places that suffers by being horribly managed. There's no hostess to seat you or greet you when you walk in. The one waitress did an admirable job both working the bar and circulating but without a system you're just waiting to be noticed or aggressively cutting in. The food and beer isn't worth the long wait.
I was not impressed by the beers, especially after reading good reviews. They were not really cold and a lot of them were not great for their style. Stick to the lager or the Pilsner, but they are not good enough to bring me back. The food was good, but again probably not good enough for me to go back. With so many great local breweries this one would be low on my list to visit.
Beer: Just ok and quite expensive per pour size. The Tripel I had was ok, the Neipa my wife had did not taste good. Solid selection, so potentially other styles are better. BBQ: OK at best. I've had worse but definitely had better, especially for the price. Brisket was very fatty/chewy, ribs were tough, cornbread was flavorless. Sauces were good, Mac and cheese was solid. My wife's tacos were 90 percent coleslaw and drowning in coleslaw "juice." Overall: The staff were very nice and the vibe was cool, but overall the actual products you're were ok at best and certainly not cheap.
Beer, staff and atmosphere are great! But please hire a new cook. The food made me and my mother and wife all sick. Food was cold, under cooked and tasted horrible. This brewery would be perfect if the hired a good chef.
So disappointing. First time I went there last year it was amazing! Not sure about the beer as I don't drink beer, but the food was amazing! However, the last few times we went there's always something on the menu that they don't have. Usually it's not that big of a deal for us cause we can compromise and get something else, so I decided to get the mac and cheese bowl this time and it was horrible. Absolutely no flavor and I had a stomach ache all night afterwards. My fiance was also unhappy with his meal. Not to mention there was one waiter who was literally waiting on everyone! He did a really good job, but that alone kind of says something about the establishment. This place used to be a gem, but I honestly probably won't go there again unless something changes. TBH they could use bar rescue.
A+ for the food, the atmosphere, and the servers. Have had better beer, didnt really love any of the many that we tried, but still a respectable selection. Loved how they served it right out of a big cask, loved the lighting and decor. Edit - went back, beers were worse. Would not recommend.
The atmosphere is nice. Do not know that your cash only in this day and age. Didn't have enough to get any beer other than using their ATM which charges a fee. Parking is also a major issue. The entrance is also the exit and it's very hard to turn around There.
I have given this rating in hopes that it would reach them. The food is great though limited to BBQ offerings it works perfect here. The problem is the beer. I tried three different IPAs and all were unfinished. I suspect the popularity has caused them to rush the fermentation process which gives it a off taste with still sugars detectable and does not have that crisp taste. Since this is their core product I feel they need to take steps To preserve quality of the brewing process Perhaps guest beers brought in if they are going through too much of their own. I was not the only one who mentioned the unfinished taste in my party. If they can take the time to finish off the beer they would have excellent brews.
Out of most beers, precooked food warmes up and not good service. Beer quality much lower. We used to come a lot and bbq was great and beers were awesome. Far away from the good days
The beer is good and the barbecue decent. The problem is there’s a huge line and wait to order anything. The place was full and there was just one person on the bar/taking orders. My friends got their food rather quickly but mine took ONE HOUR to arrive. I was already packed to go. There was not even an attempt of an apology from the staff.
Beers all tasted like dirt. Tried 4 different ones all trash. Thought some BBQ might save our bad beer experience….everything came out cold. Cold brisket, cold wings, cold Mac&Cheese. The chili was hot out the microwave though. Ball was dropped for sure, 10/10 wouldn’t recommend. Won’t be back.
Was in the area, decided to stop in. All the food was reheated, cornbread was so dry and cold that it was white in the middle. Potato salad was definitely a few days old, it tasted grainy. Dry rubbed wings & ribs weren’t fresh either, the pickles were probably the freshest item on the platter. Wouldn’t eat here again. The beertender was nice, swamped, place was pretty busy for a Sunday with only 2 staff members running around.
After coming to this establishment 3 times, on all 3 occasions the staff informed us that they were out of their bacon, which is what their kitchen is known for. The most recent time we went we called prior to coming to make sure bacon was available. When we ordered the waiter never said they were out of bacon, till he spoke with their one cook who seemed too bothered to make the bacon, rather than they were out of it. On this most recent occasion we even arrived at Defiant at 12:50pm on a Sunday, when they opened at 12:00pm with only 10 other patrons in the building. Our waiter on our second time coming here suggested calling ahead to make sure the bacon would be available and being that we had the same waiter again this third time he didn’t seem to care at all of the suggestion he previously gave us not being true. The quality of food is great, the customer service however is lacking drastically, and the amount of cooking should be raised on weekends rather than turning customers away. Would not recommend coming to this establishment except on off days where they don’t have more than 5 other patrons in the building.
All the beer taste the same. It smells awful inside. The food is the worst bbq I've ever had. And all the staff complain about some manager named Erin. To update in feb of 2025 now it's only 4 beers on tap twice as expensive as the past 2 pool tables one covered in nonsense making it unusable. Still smells. Brewing supplies in the seating area blocking tables and despite it being 95% empty at 7pm on a Saturday the majority of the tables are dirty
Just because your beer is decent (for the tri-state area) doesn't mean you can run your establishment so shoddily. Atrocious customer service, overpriced menu, small portions, lengthy wait times (and that's if they don't mess up your order, which they do regularly -- read the online reviews to find out for yourself). Food is usually reheated and generally not prepped daily, so they're regularly out of items on a small menu. Beers are often not even cold! If you're lucky, you can get a fresh order of wings and a cold beer for about $25-30. **If you're lucky** -- more likely you'll be paying that for reheated wings and a lukewarm beer. Save yourself the time and just go to one of the other breweries in the area unless you enjoy being treated like an afterthought as a customer.
I found myself in this area traveling for work. As a huge brewery fan, and a craft beer lover, I was excited to find this new spot that I'd never tried before. The reviews and images online told a tremendous story so I thought I found a hidden gem. It was anything but. The place smelled of drywall and active construction. The entire space was dirty and dark. Trying to find the bathrooms was a lord of the rings like adventure and took you to their back room that was being painted at the time. All to get to one of the more filthy bathrooms I've ever been to. Finally we get to the beer. I always try to respect the higher quality ingredients, the more time consuming and dedicated brewing process that local craft beer takes. But the beer here was borderline undrinkable.
Place is a dump. All the food was terrible. Nothing had taste. They believe that pepper is the only ingredient in the world. Their bbq sauce was decent, but once you mix it with any of the over peppered, under salted food, it’s just horrible. Also the bartender was just plain rude in all the ways you can possibly be. Please find some cool bartenders. I will avoid it at all cost.
