Ask your partner if they'll take you on a date. Ask them if they'll take you to Little Walters. For the record I don't think a reservation is necessary during the week, it is probably necessary during the weekend. The place isn't that big and that's quite alright by me. They haven't hung their sign outside yet but they don't really need to work a big neon pierogi in the window. The place is cute. The bar takes up maybe a fourth or third of the space and there are a few two tops, and fours. There's exposed brick and some venting. There's a few Polish pieces around the place and to me it's just enough accenting. We got seated at one of the high tops and it was decently sized. We were given the drink and food menus, and I zeroed in on the pickle martini. It's everything I wanted. Salty-briney, vegetal, body, dirty martini. I do love an olive dirty with vodka but pickle brings it to a new place. My partner got a beer, and then declined the vodka portion to make it a "citywide". I gladly accepted it. I chit-chatted with the excellently social wait staff, Nika. They gave me the low down on what I needed to have and try. They also explained WHY I needed to have it. The why was very welcome. We started with the assorted pickled salad, cabbage pierogi, and the kielbasa. All of these were perfect. The beets had a well done dill "pesto". The tomatoes were perfectly marinated. The cucumber was outrageous with a tahini-esque sauce. The kielbasa had a pile of pickle (that were maybe the best I've ever had, do NOT tell my grandmother), and mustard. The mustard was just bitey enough to cut through the delicious fatty smokey flavor of the pork. We moved on and had a cutlet. Which, let me tell you is almost a traumatizing concept growing up on Shake'n'Bake. I wasn't convinced but after another lowdown from the staff I was sold. It showed up and it was GORGEOUS. The piece was perfectly brown. The cauliflower on top was mustardy and on point with sharpness. There was a pan sauce that my partner and I fought over. I gladly forfeited because the cutlet and pickle were that good. I got a second cocktail of a homemade sort of liquor topped off. This was berry, dessert, smooth, and oh so summery. For dessert we had the "water ice" and cheesecake. Let me tell you that the cheesecake is maybe some of the best dessert food I've ever had. But it is not sweet. It is so exquisitely balanced between crust, cake, and topping. The fresh herb really brings the whole project together. I am so moved. The water ice wasn't quite water ice, but damn. It was smooth like soft serve. Light like water ice and slightly savory fruity from the wheat berry. This place is pumping out desserts for people like me. I have heard things about the chocolate peanut butter pierogi but I am beyond happy that I chose these. TLDR: amazing honorable Polish food. Don't be afraid to pay for this. We can pay $5 for a taco. We can pay $5 for a pierogi. Try as many things as you can. This chef is clearly putting heritage and heart into these plates and my soul feels it. Stop by, ask questions, but most importantly, enjoy yourself.
I didn’t know Polish food could taste this good. I need to apologize for my horrible pictures. Little Walter’s bartender makes a very tasty Old Fashion. Little Walter’s custom made smoker/roaster/grill makes all of the magic happen. Everything comes out flavorful, tender and juicy. The piece of bread with amazing sauce got a picture because it was tender and a pleasure to eat. Chocolate Peanut Butter Pierogi topped with homemade ice cream. Sounds disgusting right?!?! I give you the Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure 5 star money back guarantee if you don’t like it!! - This is made up, I am trying to make a dramatic statement. - Little Walter’s, I liked it, I liked it a lot!!
My friends and I have never had a true Polish restaurant experience until coming here. We were all delightfully surprised. I’ve never given the cuisine much thought but turns out I was mistaken for that. The interior is super cute, it’s small and the servers are very professional and nice, Michaela was super helpful and informative throughout our whole night. They start you off with fresh bread, dill butter and whipped pork fat, so so yummy. After, We had so many dishes, including the eggplant piergois were delicious, a tad spicy and super flavorful and soft. The potato/onion pierogi was more comforting, mild and traditional but still flavorful and buttery. The pickled herring was amazing, I ate it almost all myself it was “salty and tangy” my friend said. Paired with blackberries, roe and rhubarb. The kielbasa was smoky, juicy, and paired well with the mustard and delicious side pickle. The chicken cutlet was also its own star, its huge, boneless and beautifully crispy. The sauce was like a sweet vinegar vibe to me. Of course we had to order all the desserts. The peanut butter pierogies were chocolate based with a peanut butter potato inside and topped with ice cream and peanuts. Pretty yummy with chocolate sauce as well. The “water ice” was smoother than ice cream and soft serve and was super tart and delicious. The crunchy element added a nice flavor. The cheesecake reminded me of carrot cake and had a strong thick cream cheese flavor which I’m a fan of! Overall really enjoyed it and I think it did well to introduce me to Polish food for the first time! Definitely intrigued.
We enjoyed our experience at Little Walter's! The food was excellent, and we were very impressed with the cocktails. The service was personalized and top-notch. Great addition to the neighborhood!
Tonight, I had a date night at the critically acclaimed Little Walter's in Kensington 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 One of the best damn meals I had this year. Sustainable, farm-to-table, all made in-house Polish cuisine that's flavorful, memorable, and splendid. Everything in here makes sense and it's as relaxed in its vibe as it is effortless in its great service. Go now. And yes, their perogies are outstanding -- tremendously. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Loved our little date night here! The bread with dill butter was absolutely insane and will take up space in my brain for years to come!! The pierogi and kielbasa were also excellent, I can’t imagine going back and not ordering either of those. All the waitstaff were very friendly and the sweet little shot of cherry liquor as a digestif was a great touch. We can’t wait to go back and try more!
If you never had Polish food - this is the place to try it! The pierogi and pork served with a side of Bigos (meat and cabbage stew) were delicious and tasted authentic. Żurek, a sour rye soup, didn’t have the most flavorful broth but that was our only complaint. They have a good selection of Polish alcohol too. Huge shout out for the beautiful Polish ceramics from Bolesławiec!
I’ve eaten here 5 or 6 times, it has become one of my favorite restaurants. Some of the 1 star reviews for this place are ridiculous.. the hostess did not smile at them, the system had a glitch the first day they were open and charged people an extra 0.75 fee which they immediately fixed and refunded. People are so weird. The food at this place is amazing. That’s really all you need to know. Highly recommend the pickle martini, the surowka, kielbasa, and of course any of the pierogi.
The best Polish food I've ever had. Pierogi are almost better than my grandma's. The waitress was super informative and attentive. Pickle martini is also one of the best, and next time I'm thinking of trying it extra dirty. The homemade pickle brine is top notch.
This is truly a hidden gem!! I come from a polish background and these pierogies are some of the best I've had. The kielbasa was also really flavorful. Each dish also came with a different sauce/condiment (specified on the menu), all of which were really amazing!
Eat here, you won't regret it! Forget about another boring taco night—enjoy some fantastic Polish cuisine instead. The food is delicious. The wait staff is friendly and professional. The atmosphere is casual yet refined. The head chef and staff are clearly dedicated to their craft. Nearly everything on the menu—bread, pickles, kielbasa, desserts, even a Polish spirit—is made in house and/or sourced fresh. I was lucky enough to try a big portion of the menu. The dishes and flavors are familiar but not at all boring. They offer fantastic vegan and vegetarian options. The plating and presentation is IG worthy (the unique handmade plates from Poland are gorgeous enough on their own). Bottom line, they're doing something special at this place and you're gonna want to try it and support it!
We'll be back! First time dining here for all three of us. We split 3 starters, 2 mains, and one dessert and left full and happy. My fave bite was the pork with kapusta but my other two diners loved the pierogi ruskie. Also enjoyed the kielbasa (though I'm still partial to Czerw's). Don't skip dessert--choc and PB pierogi were a great finishing bite. Staff also friendly and very attentive (we had to keep stopping them from taking our unfinished plates away 🤣).
Went to Little Walter’s 1st anniversary. Food was great- got to try so many dishes. Bartender & waitresses super friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
Amazing food and service! Great staff. Warm, cozy atmosphere. Ate at several top restaurants abroad in Europe recently and Little Walter’s food well exceeds this. Michelin level service, drinks, dinner, and dessert.
+ Sourdough was fresh, smalec was delicious + Homemade kielbasa was tasty + Service was super friendly We did have a small "delivery fee" added on opening night, but it seems like that fee has been removed moving forward.
Little Walters is a fun spot. They have a good selection of polish favorites from beers to cocktails and vodka to core dishes. We didn't try the mains but will be back.
My wife and I enjoyed the rich flavors of the food, the pleasant atmoshpere and attentive staff. We were pleased with the portions and the warm bread with delicious butter. We are looking forward to our next visit and recommend that you check it out.
Best pork I’ve ever had. Absolutely delicious. Also good pierogies. It’s like, elevated polish food. Delicious, elevated, and delicious. I’m not polish but it was good. Would recommend to any non-polish people and polish people I.e. everyone
Awesome polish restaurant. Really good sourdough bread with herb butter and lard with crispy pork skin as the starter. Delicious kielbasa and mustard and unreal pierogies. We had the potato and farmers cheese and lamb neck pierogies. Would highly recommend both. Rotisserie pork with potatoes and bigos was delicious. Quick friendly service and great cocktails as well.
Some of the best food I’ve had In a long time. first time here and it was fireee; we ordered the potato pierogis, the lamb neck pierogis, and the kielbasa for starters and split the smoked monkfish as our entree. I also got the tart cherry mocktail and my bf got the apple milk foamy cocktail.
Truly a gem of a restaurant, and it's clear how much care and consideration is put into everything they serve. They make seemingly simple dishes remarkable, and the house cocktails are especially tasty. Plus the smell of roasted meat is the restaurant is wonderful. Highly recommend.
Little Walter’s is delicious every time. The picked vegetable salads, pierogis, golabki, and desserts are wonderful. The atmosphere and plates add to the experience.
INCREDIBLE!! There were 8 of us (4 of us are/were chefs) and we ended up ordering 2nds of EVERYTHING! The chef came out and talked to us. He and all the staff are lovely. Over 95% of the food is house made. The other things, like the mustard, are from small businesses in Lancaster.
I can’t wait to go back to Little Walter’s for their out of this world potato pierogis! We loved it so much we had to order a second round. The service is warm and attentive - everyone on staff is incredibly knowledgeable and makes you feel so welcome. The decor and vibes are inviting and fun to see all the amazing veggies they’re picking. Definitely don’t skip out on the creative and delicious cocktails and the desserts!!
As a polish person, I highly recommend this place. Their pierogi are very authentic and taste like my grandma's. Stuff us very knowledgeable about all the dishes. They also have some polish beers and liquor. The drink menu is very fun and pretty unique.
Little Walter’s is one of the best restaurants I have been to in a very long time! Everything was top-notch. We were greeted immediately with a smile when we walked in the door and the knowledgeable, friendly staff checked in on us often throughout our meal. Beautiful solid wood tabletops, that we were told all came from the same tree, an exposed brick wall, that speaks to the history of the building, a modern open kitchen concept, and an exquisitely refinished church pew. What a cool combination of old world European mixed with modern style! The crowning touch is the framed marriage certificate of the owner’s Great grandparents next to their picture on the wall . And the food, that was incredible! Our kielbasa was flavorful, crispy on the outside and juicy and delicious on the inside with just the right amount of spice. The combination of the kielbasa, the tastiest mustard I have ever had, and the pickles which were just the right amount of sour and crispy, made a perfect bite. Next, we shared a plate of pierogies. Always a favorite, and these were no exception. So authentic, you could tell they were homemade. The stuffing inside wasn’t heavy, and again just the perfect blend of seasoning, cheese, and potatoes; the caramelized onions added just the right finish. Although we could not pronounce our next dish, the wieprzowina y rozna, we definitely enjoyed it! The rotisserie pork had such a flavorful crust on the outside and the kapusta (cabbage dish), was the perfect accompaniment. The picture I took was actually after we had already dug in, but you can still see the beauty and how it was served. Throughout our whole dining experience, the staff was courteous and very solicitous, checking on us often, and taking the time to explain and pronounce everything on the menu, including the authentic cocktails. And let me just say if you are a fan of gin cocktails you must try the.pszczelarz! Light, refreshing, and, oh so good! We finished our dining experience with two delicious desserts. The blueberry pierogies, which were served over an amazing homemade cream that was just the right blend of sweetness made this dessert. A light and tasty treat. We also sampled the sernik, the spiced honey cheesecake served with peaches on top; a truly divine dessert!. Can’t wait to return and try the rest of the menu; judging by the happy faces on all of the people at the tables which were full all around us, this restaurant will soon become one of the hottest spots on the Philly restaurant scene!
Great evening at Little Walter’s. The assorted salads and bread were standout, though everything we ordered was delicious. The waitstaff were lovely and knowledgable. While it was a bit loud as the evening went on, the vibes were comfortable. Highly recommend!
True to its Polish theme, a varied menu covers the bases with excellence in all phases. Fresh, well-executed, and impressive. Friendly staff, food came out quickly, fairly priced. Raves all around. Will return, can recommend.
Just an incredible dining experience from start to finish. The soup and pierogis were the best, but everything was great honestly. My favorite restaurant of the year!
An amazing and authentic Polish dining experience. My Polish grandmother passed away a few years ago and my family hasn't had an authentic Polish meal since. My father and grandfather are both named Walter so we felt like this would be the perfect place. As soon as we sat down we felt like we were at home. Our server Megan was awesome and explained everything to us. The food was incredible and took us back to our childhood. We loved our experience and can't wait to come back! Na zdrowie! 🇵🇱
Excellent Polish gastro pub. We shared everything. The Bigos won the day. Waitress made it all wonderful. Imaginative drinks. You don't have to be Polish to love this place but it helps
Five stars are for the food + service and it was all very good. You do need to know that in our city parking can be a problem. Especially when they build over1,500 new units with less that 100 parking spots in a 2 block area, just 1 block away. No parking. Yes it is expensive. You can look at the menu and prices before going so you don't need to leave negative feedback about the cost of a drink or the polish food. Ask questions about the menu as they were very helpful explaining the dishes and drinks. Now I am not sure how they can fix the noise level but if it can be done that would be a big improvement, in my opinion. When the restaurant is full and it currently is all the time you can't talk to yourself and hear what you are saying. But I read the reviews and was aware of that going in so they still get 5 stars. I felt like I went to Poland for the evening as it was a great experience. We will be returning and I do recommend this restaurant. Enjoy!
Lovely place. Great food, great atmosphere. Front & Back of house were on their A game during my visit. I highly recommend!
Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, we were a bit skeptical. But this gem of a restaurant completely took us by surprise in the best way possible! From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the inventive cocktails, exceptional food, and warm, attentive service that hit every note just right. Our party of four opted to share a variety of dishes of four appetizers, one salad, and two entrées. Basically creating our own delightful small plates experience. Every bite was crafted with flavors that were both unexpected but complementary. We ended the meal with the cheesecake. We are still discussing that unique crust … What truly set this place apart is that it left us without our usual post-dinner critiques. Typically, we’ll dissect each dish, discussing what we might’ve done differently, though not here. Everything was spot on. The only note came from my husband, who’s Polish. He found the dishes to be less traditional. But even he had to admit, the stuffed cabbage tasted just like his grandmother’s. That’s about as high a compliment as it gets. Having a fantastic dining experience from start to finish, we absolutely will be back!
This place keeps getting better and better. How is it possible? The salads, pierogies and bread were all as fantastic as we remembered. Seasonal soups and cabbage dishes blew us away. The cocktails, beers and hard ciders were each delightful. Server Valeria was the best! Luckily, Little Walter’s has added a few tables since our last visit. Now is your chance!
We had a wonderful dining experience here. The food was well-prepared, flavorful, and served hot. Staff were polite and attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxing. Definitely a place we’ll visit again.
Some of the absolute best Polish cooking I have had for years! Their pierogies and golumpkis brought back memories of the delish meals mom, grand moms and aunts made for me. Can't wait to visit them again!
I’m always eager to try a newly opened restaurant in Philly, and this one especially because I haven’t been to many Polish restaurants! It’s a cozy, corner bar-like restaurant. We ended up sitting at the bar and service was quick. Mikayla was very knowledgeable about the menu. The pierogi were phenomenal. Soft and pillowy, but still a little bit crisp. The kielbasa was a second favorite, smoky and salty. The mustard and pickle cut through the richness of the kielbasa, perfect dish. The chicken cutlet was good, not great. I don’t think I’d get it again. One thing we did not like was the smalec served with the bread. It is rendered pork fat and not something I’m personally into. I much preferred the dill butter. Overall, I had a good experience but would come back only during happy hour as the prices during regular dinner would be high for what you are getting.
Modern inspired Polish food. Each dish we ordered the chef made heartily. I would recommend the kielbasa and pierogi rustika. We had the pork shank special: tasty, salty pork. I wish they had beet soup.
First stop on a Fishtown/Kensington food tour. The tasting menu is a MUST! An enormous amount of food for $65 a head. Not your typical pierogis, but still very tasty. The lamb neck ones were the highlight. The rotisserie pork was the star of the show!
The food was good and I do see the chef trying but for traditional dishes, he needs to shore up on the fundamentals. The most disappointing was the perogies. It was just okay and the mushroom one was unevenly salty and felt like a tapenade in a dough pouch that didn't quite wow. The potato one was also okay and lumpy not in the right way. We are a tough crowd with Polish so having the fundamentals down is important while you wow with the creative twist. The goods were the kielbasa served with pickles instead of cabbage and the 2 entrees-fried chicken with some type of apple sauce gravy and the monkfish in beet sauce with a shrimp kielbasa. I have never had monkfish in an Eastern European cuisine and was so different from the various Asian ways it's prepared. Probably the most interesting and creative Polish dish. The Polish beers and the cocktails were great. Well balanced and enjoyable. To be honest the service and atmosphere was more like 3.5. For the service, our service was just professional enough. We are a gregarious group so not really bothered by the facial expressions of the server. However, the general atmosphere want inviting you to stay longer despite what the interior design and Polish grandma/auntie ceramic dishes wants to suggest. The beginning was fine but at the end, they just want you to pay and get out. Unfortunate since they could easily make additional $$$ in after dinner drinks. The atmosphere is also trying to be cozy but a bit off. No clear line to the bathroom and definitely need to do better job of placing bigger groups vs 2 or 4 dining groups. It's supposed to be an open kitchen, you kinda failed a bit in that aspect since the one big table in the back can see the kitchen. It was an enjoying meal thanks to company and trying a new place but done see us going back anytime soon. But if you are in Fishtown, not bad to try it once. *spent about $60 per person*
This is a great spot for large groups/families! Our table of 7 was perfectly accommodated in this small but cozy space. We all ordered the chef’s tasting menu but our favorites were the kielbasa, the brisket, cheese, and squash pierogis, and the rotisserie style pork shoulder!!
I dined here with my family a couple weeks ago. My uncle who is Polish was incredibly excited to come visit, being that you don't often see Polish restaurants making Top 50 US restaurant lists. My first interaction with the manager, requesting to purchase drinks for the table prior to the meal, was less than nice. Once arrived that evening, the hostess looked confused and overwhelmed. They told us to wait for the table to be set, so we made our way to the bar, hoping to get a drink prior to sitting. Within 1 minute we were told our table was ready. Our server was good, although she seemed somewhat bothered to be taking care of us and did not know how to pronounce names of dishes - which seems like it comes with the territory. I would have expected exceptional service in such a well-reviewed restaurant, with the prices being what they are. Yes, the food was exceptional, innovative and delicious - 5/5 stars, I would recommend it to anyone; but if a bill for 6 people is going to be $500+, I want an amazing experience, not just a good one. Overall, I think the place adds nice character to the area; the chefs are incredibly skilled, and the menu is inventive, but I think the service could definitely use some polishing.
We dined family style with a group of five for our first adventure at Little Walters. This classic corner bar reimagined into a restaurant is very cute. Tables are a bit tight but people were very friendly. It is loud when the place is full. We sampled across the menu and everything was terrific. Even little things like the salad was an interesting taste experience. The staff was very professional and friendly. What I did not expect was a very high quality bar turning out interesting drinks of all types. We will definitely be back.
What a delightful atmosphere! The service was fantastic. Our server was very kind and was great at explaining the menu items and recommending dishes. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars is because some of the food was just a little underwhelming in terms of flavor but certain dishes were perfect (the pickled veggies and the soft serve ice cream were incredible). Would come back—but maybe just for apps or dessert.
This place offers much resistance. Think of it as the porcupine of Philadelphia dining. I was all set to be wowed given the glowing reviews. The first indication of trouble was the unsmiling host. Totally mirthless. The tables are set up at a jaunty angle. Somewhat disorienting. We were seated by a large loud party. After a few minutes we requested to move. The only other table the unsmiling host was willing to give up was by the door, even though there were 10 empty tables (he said they were all booked). So I put my coat back on and sat by the cold blasts. Food was actually quite interesting and tasty. We had some pickled mackerel, potato pierogies, kielbasa and fried chicken. It was more than enough for 2. The drinks were all delicious too. I could see the chef working hard in the open kitchen. He’s trying his best and the food is definitely good but I wouldn’t want to return to that atmosphere.
I've have Polish food and many perogies. This is my the first time trying Polish food in Philly. Regardless, it's impossible for everything to be this salty. The complementary butter and spread was my favorite dish out of everything. The ruskie was better than the lamb pierogi. The flavors of the pork dish weren't cohesive. The monkfish "soup" was the most confusing. The server called it a "soup" so I thought, maybe a borscht - light, citrus, earthy. But wow it was a brine - so salty and not something I'd drink! I was full by the end of the night but not because of the food... People have mentioned this before in your reviews - please read them!!!!
The pierogis and kielbasa were delicious but our main meals were very salty. My whole family is Polish so I am accustomed to Polish food and this was a very bad representation of it. It was also very expensive for what it was. The atmosphere was very comfortable inside with nice details with the books on the bookshelves.
We were excited to try this place out on a date night based on a friend's strong recommendation and all the glowing reviews, but we came away quite disappointed. The food was extremely salty (even the desserts!), verging on inedible. The recipes seemed to be random mashups of elements of Polish cuisine and the resulting flavor combinations were strange and unsatisfying, for example: fruit jelly on a chicken cutlet. The chicken cutlet itself was tough and overly greasy. Pierogi seemed more like Asian dumplings. The bigos and vegetable sides were all drowning in vinegar. Every dish seemed to be dialed up to the max for "flavor" with zero consideration given to digestibility. I haven't gotten an upset stomach like this in a long time. On the plus side, the cocktails were pretty good. But on to more downsides: horrible location/bad parking, way overpriced, extremely cramped, bad acoustics (every conversation is amplified into a stressful cacophony, especially from the extras-drunk guests). Two hours next to the open kitchen made us smell like smoke and required immediate showers and laundry at home. Reading all the gushing positive reviews of this place is making me feel like I'm in the twilight zone. They're either fake or my tastes and expectations are just way, way out of sync with what most people want in a restaurant. In retrospect, I wish we had gone to a more traditional Polish restaurant where we could have spent half the money for a much better meal. Or for the $200 we spent here, we could have gone to a nice steakhouse and been guaranteed a great meal.
Really been hesitant about leaving a negative review since I’ve never left one before, but if you’re expecting traditional Polish food/flavors or a Polish experience, I would pass on this place. I’ve never left a meal untouched at a restaurant but I felt beyond sick after 1 pierog (single form of pierogi (pierogi is already plural- no reason to add an extra “-s” or “-es”). Poor flavors and everything was way too salty to the point of being inedible or you’ll chugging water for the next 24 hours. Presentation was nice and goralska decor reminded me of my home in southern Poland. I was really excited about trying this place so I am really bummed by this experience. (My partner and I are both Polish, fluent, and raised on traditional Polish meals as well as lived in Poland.)
