**Don’t sleep on the fish tacos** I hit up Bakersfield while in Pittsburgh for a work trip. I sat at the bar and was greeted warmly by the bartender who took time to share his personal recommendations with me. I ordered the short rib queso, two tacos, and a salad. For the salad I had the small “Willie” and it was a great option - crunchy, fresh, and a nice dressing. The small was also a lot of salad for the money! For the tacos I had the short rib taco, and the fish taco. I personally loved the fish taco and would have had two of those over the short rib taco had I known how delightful the fish taco would be (crunchy fish, fresh slaw on top…yum!). I paired both tacos with the Bakersfield house made hot sauce. I also enjoyed a honey dew margarita with my meal. I have to say, I thought about that margarita all day the following day. Such great flavor, and freshness. I can’t say enough good about this place. If you’re in Pittsburgh , find it and eat there.
My dad and I went here, it was honestly so good. Taco Tuesday, includes $3 tacos! The tacos were the perfect size so that you can try multiple kinds!! Drinks were delicious and I’m not a huge fan of tequila. Rex was working the bar, he’s awesome!
Excellent food and great location! The salsa trio was delicious. The tacos are small but tasty too. Perfect to try a few.
Bakersfield is a Mexican restaurant located on Penn ave downtown pgh. The tacos are good, my favorite one is the short rib. They also have $3 taco Tuesday. Bakersfield also has fresh fruit juice margaritas
Bakersfield has a great atmosphere every time I visit. I have visited the location several Times, and the food has been good every visit. If you’re in search of a good cocktail, then this is the spot. They offer special pricing for a different liquor each night of the week. So, there will always be happy hour on at least one of the liquors in the restaurant. The wait times are almost nonexistent once you are seated. If you order tacos, they’re usually at the table within 10 minutes. I’ve been a busy nights and not so busy, and the delivery time was almost the same. The waiters and waitresses have always been nice, and are good with keeping water and drinks refilled. If you’re in search of a nice place to dine with friends, family or to just network, then this is the spot. If the weather is nice, they offer outdoor seating. The location is in a cluster of restaurants, but they stand out with service. I would recommend this restaurant if you’re in the downtown Pittsburgh area.
Have been here a few times and every time I've felt welcomed and enjoyed myself. The tacos are solid with some good variety and you can't beat the price, especially during happy hours. I also regularly get their margaritas which are great. Their staff is really friendly and the handful of times I've been in, any staff I asked had recommendations to give about their menu. The bartender Rex was a great example of this and helped me order up a solid meal which I really enjoyed. I definitely recommend this spot and take my friends whenever they visit Pittsburgh
I was in the city for a business trip across the street and stopped in for dinner with co-workers. We actually walked to another place, but that place had a 1 hr wait time so we back tracked to Bakersfield, and I gotta say, it was meant to be for me. I didn't used to be a big fan of tacos but after having eaten a couple from this place, I am convinced now that tacos can be fancified and taste delicious. I had a Baja shrimp taco and a short rib taco. I have to say the flavoring in each were unique and meshed so perfectly together. Well done to chef! The trio dip were the best I've ever had anywhere. Ever in the hunt for the best old fashioned, this place serves up an impressive smokey old fashioned.
This place is amazing! Wonderful service and even better tacos!! We ordered a pitcher of margaritas for the table and we easily got 8-10 drinks out of it. The tacos had great variety and we obviously crafted with freshness and flare. They make it easy to mix and match with premium meats and toppings on each so there’s something for everyone. The cheese dip and salsas were also very good. We loved the atmosphere too, very modern and fun. Such a great experience!!
Shout out to MIKE for setting us up with Tequila and Tacos!! The street tacos were amazing. Def recommend the roasted cauliflower veg too.
3 friends and I met here for taco Tuesday, our first time. Had a blast! Emma was our server and she was awesome. Great price and great time! Highly recommend
This place was true authentic Mexican. Wonderful tacos that you can’t find no place else they tasted so fresh and delicious that each person in my group started out with 3 and ended up ordering more for a total of 6 tacos to each of us! The salsa and chips were very excellent. I enjoyed the mild salsa as I don’t like to much heat, but two of my friends fell in absolute love with the hot salsa. Now for the best part the margarita’s. They was some of the best that any of the people in my group or I had. They was all made fresh and delicious and the waitress even told us they don’t have any mixes it’s all made to order. You could tell by how delicious and addicting they was. I recommend doing pitchers and splitting it that’s what my group did and then we each tried each other’s. Highly recommend this place for a fun and relaxing time! Will be back
Great tacos, excellent staff, and memorable vibe.
Great atmosphere and right on Penn Ave. We sat outside and the weather was perfect. Not a lot of car traffic on the street but the bike lanes proved extra entertainment. Server was amazing and the food was good. It’s important to know that the tacos and the drinks are very small. For 4 people we had 3 appetizers (to share) and 3 tacos each. Each taco is around $4 each and the margaritas are $10 each.
Excellent tacos. You’re going to want more than one, they’re not huge. And if you’re with a group and order lots of tacos, they deliver them on a platter, so it can be a little confusing with who’s is who’s. They play great music in the background and good vibes in there
Sat at the bar for margaritas, guacamole and tacos. Everything was amazing! Ordered the pineapple margarita which had Licor 43 in it - I haven’t seen that in a margarita before. It was absolutely delicious! All the bartenders were very friendly and attentive. Highly recommend!
Tacos are 2-bites-and-done but pretty good. If you like tart drinks then the honeydew margarita is for you. Rex was welcoming from the start and checked in on us frequently.
Bakersfield helped in creating a special memory for us on our big day by hosting our wedding party for a lunchtime taco break between the ceremony and reception. Despite the busy weekend in Pittsburgh, they were able to provide us with a quiet, large space in their beautiful lower level. The tacos and drinks served were some of the best you'll find in Pittsburgh, contributing to a fantastic dining experience. The friendly service extended for special events added a personal touch to our wedding day. Bakersfield's ability to offer delicious food, a great atmosphere, and accommodating service made our wedding party lunch a highlight of the day. If you're looking for a venue with excellent food, a charming ambiance, and exceptional service for your special event, Bakersfield is the way to go. Our experience was memorable, and we highly recommend Bakersfield for any wedding-related celebration or gathering.
The food is great and comes out fast every time. Love the queso and guac to start, and all the tacos are delicious! The skinny margs were also a hit with our group. Will be back soon!
What a great place. Gluten free menu with super tasty gluten free food. Strong tart margaritas and friendly bar staff. Who could ask for more!
The food was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed that the tacos were ala carte, so you can make your own sample platter. Two tacos were plenty for me. My husband had three and he's a big guy. We would totally recommend this spot. I wish I could return, but I don't live in Pittsburgh. We were visiting colleges.
Mike was an awesome server and the margaritas do a great job getting you day drunk if that’s your jam. If not, the food is quite a delight and will make you feel like you are deep in the heart of Mexico. Great food. Strong drinks. Handsome server named Mike. 5 stars. ⭐️
My experience here at Bakersfield Pittsburgh was most enjoyable. I love the great atmosphere, people, food, and most notably the drinks. My bar tender for the evening (Rex) was most helpful and made my drinks with care and elegance. Would definitely recommend going back. The stuffed Peppers are my favorite!!!
Everything was delicious! We had a reservation on a Saturday evening around 6 but probably didn’t need one. Chicken tacos and queso were perfect
Al Pastor tacos and the queso were to die for!! Both bartenders provided exceptional service. They were so positive and welcoming. Loved my mezcal margarita. With so many options in the area I was glad I chose Bakersfield.
Wonderful experience. We had to sit at the bar downstairs but the server was great. She explained how the tacos are small and suggested the dinner for two option which we would not have thought about and had almost got up to eat somewhere else. All the food was great. Margaritas were great. Went in winter but I suppose we could have ate outside.
Bakersfield is an awesome choice! Me and my girlfriend are college students and obviously do not have the biggest budget, so when we want to go out for a nice meal this is usually where we end up. Our favourite item is by far the carnitas tacos, they are delectable and are truly one of my favourite bites in food. The food is fairly priced, the staff is great and the atmosphere is super chill, the basement is our preferred level for the more relaxed atmosphere. We usually split 6/8 tacos and leave satisfied and without burning a hole in our wallets. Would definitely recommend!
My wife and I tried Bakersfield for the first time last night, and we cannot wait to go back! We arrived during Happy Hour and ordered a couple Modelo’s and the chips and queso. The queso was phenomenal and some of the best chips we have ever had! We then ordered the empanadas and those were great as well. Our server was incredibly friendly and attentive. We are excited to go back and try more food!
We were in town to visit my son and his family , and we were hosting the dinner for them and we ordered a family style dinner and let me tell you we were not disappointed. Everything was extremely delicious. My only disappointment was that the bag wasn’t enforced on the bottom and when we got to our Airbnb, the bottom fell out, but thank goodness we managed to save the food and nothing went to waste. Might be a good idea for the to go orders to put a piece of cardboard just so that it doesn’t happen to anyone else other than that I highly recommend this place. They took great care of us.
Sat downstairs with a party of 6. Booth was massive and table was big. Pitcher of margarita was perfect for our group. Beer selection is great as well. Each of us got two tacos and queso for the table. It comes out pizza style on a platter and the waitress points out which are yours. The vibe was great, the playlist was so so good and it was very clean.
Had drinks here two nights in a row while in town for a conference. Also had lunch there the one day. Food is excellent. Empanadas were perfect and queso with short rib wax the best I've had. Service is quick as well as getting your food and drinks. Highly recommend if you're in town.
Great margaritas, tortillas, and tacos. It can get busy but the servers are always hustling. They have a good happy hour too.
Visited when attending an event at the Convention Center. Close walk and food was excellent. Chips and Salsas (3 salsas) was very good and fresh.
Finally got to try Bakersfield! Quite a popular spot for tacos here on Penn Ave. However, I decided to try a different part of their menu. I got to try their Milanese Torta and a side of rice and beans. The Milanese torta was amazing. Almost a bit like chicken park (both breaded chicken), but in differently spiced and sandwich form. Breading was light, and the chicken was juicy. The portion was quite nice too. Very fresh vegetables. I will say, although the green sauce was good, I wish they offered something besides just salsa as a dipping sauce. The rice and beans were pretty great too. A little expensive as a side, though. The rice is flavorful, with hints of cilantro and maybe a little lemon. Beans are great too, almost creamy, and topped with more sour cream. All in all, quite good!
My friends and I got drinks, tacos, appetizers, and salads. We all enjoyed our food and drinks. I got the shrimp and chicken tacos, and they were both great but I liked the chicken taco more.
Great food, location and ambiance. The waitress we had was not great but she at least got the order right. The prices are very reasonable ($4.5 per taco). Tacos are not quite as big as the ones we find at Condados. If you order 2 tacos at Condados, you might want to order 3 here. There are not many chicken options (only Pollo Verde in tacos). They only have one sandwich option (Torta) but it's great. Everything we ordered tasted great.
Bakersfield in downtown Pittsburgh: tacos so good they’ll make you forgive the parking situation. Loud, lively, tequila flows like the Monongahela—basically church, but with better queso…and you’re in Pittsburgh.
The $26 dinner for two was a perfect deal. The food was very fresh and flavorful. A Pittsburgh classic spot.
On a volleyball tournament weekend my daughter and I had dinner with some of her teammates here and there were couple of good thing about this place: 1) It's one of the few restaurants out there that have large booths for about 10 people (or even larger parties) 2) They were able to switch my reservation from 4 people originally to 9 people in a quick, easy way, so that goes to great service. 3) Food was good for the most part, try the Quesos as appetizers for sure, as they were the highlight of the night. Same goes for the Guacamole and Salsas Trio. Now on the negative side, unfortunately the tortillas in my tacos were cold when I got them, as if they came straight from the fridge (and I didn't have the time for sending the order back), otherwise I would have given this place 5 stars. I'll come back with no doubt anyway and give those tacos another try.
Out of towner review: Excellent meal ordered to go. Food was fresh and cooked to order. Staff wasn’t the friendliest but luckily I interacted with them minimally. Here’s what I ordered: - Chicken Torta (delicious sandwich, the chicken was fried to perfection, though everything else on it was a little boring) - Shrimp Taco (shrimp cooked to order, but there was wayyyyy to much slaw on it) - Chips & Salsa (fine, green salsa by far the best, but nothing too exciting) Overall, I enjoyed my meal and would recommend checking out Bakersfield. The staff and food not standing out so much dropped my review to 4 stars. Enjoy!
All in all it was a good experience. I recommend you make a reservation. We made a reservation for 845 but we’re sat closer to 9:20. Not a big deal, happy to see a busy business. The short rib queso was a nice starter. Service was good, food came out pretty quick. I really enjoyed the pineapple margarita. Gracias chef!
The short rib queso was absolutely incredible! I would go here and just order this one thing. Of the entire taco list, we tried all but the fish. They were pretty good. Some of them are quite small. Unfortunately, I did not like the homemade tortillas as they got a little too soft or soggy for me. My partner had no issue with them.
Not a bad place, the apps were better than the tacos. Just not much flavour for the tacos. Pitcher of Marqueritas could use more tequila, really limey, not boozy.
This place was so close to being a 5 star experience. If you want a classic margarita, and you’re picky about good margaritas, don’t get one here. As far as one of their unique custom margaritas, it seemed decent. The apps were very good. The main course (tacos) were good, but they came out cold. So it was a huge disappointment and I’m not sure how that even happened. Overall would give it a try again. Just avoid the classic margs and hope food is warm/hot when it comes out. Maybe we were just unlucky.
This was one of the only open places at dusk. We had a group of 8 and quickly got seats in the booth! To begin, we got virgin margaritas and they were very good! It was sweet with a perfect pinch of tingling spice. We got the pollo verdes, papas rajas, and the huitlacoche tacos. The tacos are very small, about the size of an orange. The ingredients as well as the tortilla were fresh, but the pairings of certain flavors just didn’t work. These tacos were a HIT or a MISS depending on what you ordered. Our server was incredibly fast and kind, but the food was just lacking. I would give this place a 7/10. (would definitely come back for the virgin margaritas!)
We heard great feedback and reviews on this restaurant and decided to stop here after an event. It was so very busy. We ordered a dip, salsa, guacamole, chips, drinks and one of each taco from the menu. The appetizers were delivered very fast but we were still waiting for our tacos. Soon, our excitement turned to disappointment. We noticed it was taking a while for food that day when we looked around the room. We asked neighboring patrons how long they had been waiting for food. Some had been there waiting for food as long as 45 minutes. We decided that we did not want to wait. We called the waitress over to cancel our order. The manager (wish I could remember his name) stopped over to our table and was so apologetic and completely amazing; transparent of some kitchen challenges experienced that night and let us know this was completely uncommon. We really appreciated that. Very top notch leadership there to come and do that. Thank you. You are the reason for the 3 star. We will certainly be back to give it another try in the near future and change my rating if it applies. 🌮🌮
Very meh. Went with a friend when they opened at 11am for an early lunch. The inside smelled like a mechanic's shop with a very distinct oil smell. We sat outside. Waitress was attentive, which was nice. Food overall was extremely meh for the reviews. The queso with chorizo was very good and so were the empanadas, but that was about it. The esquitas corn salad had no flavor, all 3 tacos I had (fish, chicken, and cochinita pibil) were also disappointing, especially the chicken which tasted liked boiled and shredded chicken on a tortilla). I wouldn't go back except to just get the queso or empanadas.
Service was great, V was awesome. The food itself is bland though. People boasted about these tacos but there was little to no seasoning on anything we got. Except the chips, which were drenched in salt. So just went way overboard in the opposite direction. Check out viva la vidas. A little further out but prob the best mexican food in the burgh
Summary: For tacos, the quality to price ratio is likely the worst in the city. Overpriced and our table of 6 were all dissatisfied with them. However, drinks were a highlight and some of the dips were good as well. Among the 6 people in our party we tried at least one of everything and the highest rating we got out of anyone was a 6/10. Personally I thought that was too generous. Rubbery tortillas and mediocre fillings. The fish was the only one I'd say that I liked of the 5 I tried. Salsa is extremely watery. Queso was very good. Contrary to how poor the food was, the drinks were on point. We had several different margaritas and all were pretty good. Service was good, out waitress came around several times but was somewhat absent after we got our food. The atmosphere is nice and inviting with no harsh lighting. Ultimately though I have to base my rating on the food, which fell far short of our expectations, especially relative to the price.
Decent upscale vibe, with cold food, and cheese dip that’s tastes like potatoes. Service was not impressive. I’m not from here but always go to a fusion style taco joint and assumed being close to the water would guarantee fresh seafood. My assumption was wrong and ended up with what tasted like frozen fish. The salsa verde is bland, and their “hottest” sauce was not hot but just tasted disgusting.
Cold, gross tacos, queso that tasted like potato’s , chicken looked white and canned, chips COVERED in salt, and was seated with another couple in a dim basement on valentine’s day. Very unsatisfied with my visit. Didn’t even finish 1 taco.
