Great little brewery nestled next to the river but away from the tourists. Flight of beer beyond the normal ‘rinse and repeat’ you normally get paired with an amazing pineapple habanero wing plate… divine - from Wisconsin 5 stars Sorry already started eating lol
Excellent Food, excellent beer, excellent people! And the story of the brewery’s origin is inspiring! 💜
We were in town for a conference and love to seek out local places and support them. This place did not disappoint! We started with a flight of beers to taste and quickly found our favorites. The Vienna lager and the black lager were exceptional. We decided to share a chicken, bacon & ranch pizza. Oh, man, let me tell you that was the best pizza we have had in a very long time. The pizza had what appeared to be fresh ingredients and a light crust that was full of flavor as well. The staff recognized us as out of towners right away as they must have a pretty regular clientele but we were greated with open arms and made to feel as one of the regulars. They made recommendations on beers and food and helped us with our quest to find more quality breweries while we are in town. The brewery was very clean, we were seated next to all the tanks and equipment. The restrooms were very clean. There was outside seating directly in front of the business which appeared very well kept up and clean as well. Would definitely recommend a visit here and if we are ever back in town again, we will return for sure!
Ricardo and the team at Back Unturned Brewing Co. are always incredibly welcoming and create a fantastic atmosphere for both great food and hosting a business social hour. We’ve hosted our group here three times now, and we keep coming back because the experience is consistently excellent. Everyone in our group loves the craft beers and the delicious food. Ricardo does a wonderful job accommodating our semi-large social hour group and always makes us feel taken care of. The pizzas are outstanding, and the focaccia and beer bread are absolutely amazing—definitely try them with the beer cheese! Everything on the menu is simple, well-made, and full of flavor. Back Unturned is always our first choice when we want a fun place to gather, enjoy great food, and keep things at a reasonable price. Thank you to Ricardo and the entire team for helping make our social hours so enjoyable every time!
Service was excellent, staff were very nice. I had the Paradise Pale - excellent pale ale - and the Dream Juice, which was fantastic. I got the lunch combo with the Formaggio bacon calzone and green goddess salad and both were absolutely delicious. Great music!
I almost never write reviews, but this experience was absolutely worth sharing. The service was phenomenal, and Pia was incredible—friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what she does. Her beer and food recommendations were spot-on, and thanks to her suggestion, I tried a sour beer that completely won me over. Everything about this visit exceeded my expectations. I can’t wait to come back and will definitely be telling everyone about this place.
BLUF: Great beer, great food, and great service. Highly recommend you check this place out if you’re a fan of craft beer and supporting local businesses. Back Unturned is easily one of my favorite local breweries in San Antonio. Their beer is fantastic, with a few staples, and some constantly rotating innovative taps. Their most popular beer, Dream Juice, is a fruit forward hazy IPA that always quenches my thirst, and a beer I’ve introduced many a non-beer drinker to with very positive feedback. Their take on an Oktoberfest, Backtoberfest, has been my go to choice lately, and I’ll be sad to see that keg dry up. They offer flights of beer, giving you an opportunity to sample four beers of your choice, and their beers are listed on Untappd if you’re a user. Many foods pair well with beer, but perhaps none better than pizza and wings, which happens to be their primary culinary offering. They do a limited pizza almost every month, and I haven’t had one that wasn’t a hit. Their mainstays are delicious as well, highly recommend the Spicy Hawaiian. (Pineapple belonging on pizza is a hill I’ll die on) The venue is small and very inviting, walk in and grab an open seat wherever you’d like. They’re dog friendly, and this is one of my favorite local spots to bring my pup. Service is top notch, and I’ve always been greeted warmly by their staff, and rarely have I had to suffer an empty glass for too long. Things worth knowing ahead of time: No dedicated parking lot, but there’s ample parking within a city block at either the Maker’s Market lot or the lot behind their building, both of which I believe are paid. Dog friendly inside, limited outdoor seating available as well. Trivia by Live Trivia the second and fourth Mondays of the month. They used to have a full bar, but no longer offer that, limited to beer and a few wine options, beer being the obvious standout here. They offer a weekend brunch, haven’t tried it yet but it’s on my to-do list.
I absolutely love the pizza here. The rajun cajun and Mediterranean pizza specials have been my all time favorite and I wish they were normal menu items. I have never had an issue with service or my menu items. They do get busy do prepare for a wait if you're there during busy times. Love the culture of this business and they have a great family story
Amazing beer, food, service and a great story on how the brewery was founded!! Our waiter Sean (sorry if it is spelled the other way) was so friendly and did an awesome job. The Dream Juice Hazy IPA was incredible!! We liked our first pizza so much we ordered a second and what we couldn’t finish went back to our hotel with us!!! They allow dogs and were very accommodating to us with our young daughter.
Overall experience was definitely satisfactory. The energy in the room was super welcoming. It was my first time and the pie brought me back to nostalgic pizza taste that is somehow incomparable to Any pies that I’ve actually had. If you’re in the area looking for a beer and want an incredible slice of pizza this is the place to go .
Super cool place 😎 to grab a bite, I enjoyed the salad and pizza lunch special and it was a reasonable price point ☝️.I lf you get a chance read origin story on the back of the menu, A short summary is to follow your dreams and never give up no matter what hardships and challenges you face in life the story spoke to my heart and food spoke to my stomach, which was really good ... Super fast and friendly service highly recommend if you're in the Neighborhood!!! EV
5 ⭐️ all around. Great place to cool down, enjoy some cold beer and delicious pizza. The Salad was really good too. The entree size was more like a side salad. Get the family size instead if you are splitting it with someone else. On that note, the large is more like a medium size so I easily ate the entire entree salad and half the medium size pizza with more room in my belly. 😁 hope this helps ✌️
So glad Ricardo didn’t turn his back on his dream and followed thru with Back Unturned 🍻 Stopped in for lunch - specials are a generous pizza with salad, plenty of food, brick oven prepared. Salads fresh with tasty dressing. Very chill vibe inside. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Brewmaster at work. Dream Juice is what a hazy should be, slightly dank, with hoppy hints and murky…but very easy drinking. Bock is malty and chocolatey, not watered down…Great flavor! All-around excellent experience, we’ll be back!
I read the story about this brewery and had to go check it out. We went for the Sunday brunch and daily lunch specials. Hubby ate every bite of his breakfast flatbread. He loved the combo of breakfast flavors! The Hawaiian pizza (without the spicy) has delicious. A side salad rounded out the combo. Pizza was just right chewiness and the perfect amount of toppings. We will be back!
After seeing the owner on SA Live we stopped by for a vist. It was lunch time - we found two seats at the bar. After sharing it was our first time, out server offered popular drinks and food. After a few samples, I had a cool blueberry beer, which came with a cool mug! My husband had the recommended salad and pizza while I tried the nachos. We felt welcomed and were about to meet the owner. We will continue to support local business!
Great first first visit to a brewery I didn’t even know was in my work neighborhood. Will totally come back when I am in town for work. Atmosphere was great, liked the pizza and felt their trademark Dream Juice. I love any beer I can’t see through! Nice meeting Chris, Matt and others!
Great laid back atmosphere, great selection of pizzas and flat breads; all other food item selection is not very extensive but there are plenty of great common options (wings, sandwich, etc.). We had the Brussels sprouts (Parmesan & Garlic) and were delicious; also the Caprese Salad, and the Chorizo Hash and were excellent. Ordered the beer sampler and a strawberry lemonade Gimlet and were also great. service was also on spot, even though it was early lunch and not overly crowded our food came out quick and servers were very attentive!
Went with some co - workers after work and let me tell you I was hoping for good expectations and was sorely let down . Not only were the staff not very friendly but they seemed very un informative with the menu. The food wasn’t advertised as is . Won’t go back as this isn’t a place to go to . Also I had to slice my own pizza with a place utensils because they didn’t do it the first time when cutting the pizza .
Just a heads up for anyone thinking about coming here — this place might be fine if you’re drunk and just looking for something greasy, but if you actually care about the quality of your food, I wouldn’t recommend it. The pizza was extremely greasy and honestly gross. The service was bad, and the overall experience felt unprofessional. I’m also not sure what the dress code is supposed to be, but it didn’t reflect a good image for the company. I don’t drink, so maybe that’s why the food really didn’t work for me — but overall, I won’t be coming back.
I’ve been a long time customer to this establishment and enjoyed cocktails, (no longer an option here), exceptional beer, really good wings and pizza. Recently the waiters were all changed and cocktail service ended. We’ve been loyal customers so we decided to give the new crew the benefit of the doubt. We decided to grab some beers and watch the end of the Spurs game. The Brewery closes at 11:00, a waiter 5 minutes earlier closed our ticket courteously because they were closing. At 10:59 an employee, supposedly a manager, behind the bar, not assisting with any closing duties, rudely said in a loud voice “ We’re closing and shutting off the TV” Before that was said there was 50 seconds left in the game and we were putting on our coats. I said in response “this place sure has changed.” Last time I encountered such rudeness was at the restaurant Ocho, also near the Riverwalk. They are now out of business. We will not be returning, sometime in the future we will look in to see if this person is still working here (though we have not seen her do much working besides lurk behind the bar and the ladies room door. Customer service is one of foundations of of any good business, hopefully this establishment will return to it’s previous standards.
