Shwack Cantina in San Clemente is a local favorite known for its friendly service, chill atmosphere, and tasty food. Standout dishes include the fish tacos, burgers (especially the Big Al and Cantina Burger), and surf & turf. Some found portion sizes small for tacos.
Tip: The Gnarly Nachos are a great way to fill up for cheap. Happy hour drinks are reasonably priced.

Great casual place to dine or get a few drinks. Servers are friendly and will check you guys every now and then. Indoor and outdoor seatings are available. Their mahi mahi is fresh and not frozen. Sauteed vegies are well seasoned. Calamari tastes good too.
Came late after checking into my motel. It was getting close to closing time but they didn’t bat an eye, just offered me a spot and cheerfully took care of me. The Bourbon Brisket sandwich was one of the best things I’ve had lately. Add some good music on the stereo and a good house margarita and you have a really happy guy that will come back soon. Thank you!
Bomb small local spot. Fish tacos are on point and the beer selection is pretty unique. Friendly service and a good selection at the bar inside the restaurant. Stop by if you're looking for some good food or looking to get a couple of drinks.
Solid food, nice atmosphere there. Ordered the Shaka Tacos (fish) however I was kinda disappointed with the portion size for the food. (but rising costs amongst everything so I understand) But my friend ordered the Gnarly Nachos and those are a great way to fill up for cheap Parking was easy Quickly helped us and sat us at a table Would come back again
Our favorite spot in San Clemente! We have never had a bad experience here, and all the food is GREAT! I believe at this point we have tried everything on the menu, and when our family is in from out of town, the Shwack Cantina is a must visit!
My friends and I found this gem and loved its food and service! We all ordered our very own versions of Surf & Turfs, and enjoyed the marinade of the meat. The marinade was so flavorful. Drinks are reasonably priced beyond happy hour. I definitely will return again if I’m ever in San Clemente.
My new favorite place. Cool indoor/outdoor vibe, friendly staff who are good listeners, and delicious, reasonably priced food. We had fish tacos (best I remember having, made with succulent mahi mahi) and the surf’n turf (all cooked perfectly). But shhhhh, don’t tell anyone, mk? P.S., we keep going back and it is good every time. Definitely recommend the calamari tacos. Eggs Benedict was on point, too. And must reiterate — the excellent service rounds out the experience. Not only are they friendly but they LISTEN. Did I mention that? Kudos to management and staff.
Wow, what wonderful service and food. Our waitress was SUPER friendly and tentative to our needs. The atmosphere was very chill and open. The food was excellent and came out pretty quick. I ordered Philly cheesesteak, which had very tender beef and sautéed onions and peppers. They also give an Au jus dipping sauce that made the sandwich KILLER! The wife had Al Pastor tacos. Shredded pork with all sorts of flavor, fresh and sweet zesty taste to them. Then we shared Spuds Cantina style. It's sliced potatoes covered in melted cheese, bacon, and cilantro with their Shwack Sauce, which tastes like an avocado ranch mixture! All three items were delicious. Perfect first-time experience.
Atmosphere was great and the “Big Al” burger was delicious. White shark Belgian white was good as well.
AMAZING. I've been to 10 countries and the french fried potatoes were the best I've had. Got the cantina burger. Highly recommend.
This place is a great alternative to the Shwack in Dana Point when more in the mood for Mexican food. Also, this location has a full bar! Definitely order the Chips and Queso.
Had a great dinner here! Food was bomb and the servers were so sweet!

Amazing chili Verde! Good beer selection. Fantastic breakfast. Not enough positive adjectives to describe this place...
First time here. We stopped here to have some Mexican food, but all ended up getting burgers. The burgers and fries were amazing. We will be back again.
Delicious everything and great fast service. All good was hot, fresh, and all the way from burgers to the Mexican food each dish is AMAZINGLY delicious. Best fries I’ve had in a while.
Great food, service and atmosphere. This was a fun family friendly restaurant with delicious food. Will definitely come back when we are in town again.
A cool new take on The Shwack. This location does not have the full menu of the Original Shwack located in Dana Point. But it does have a great menu that has been added to over time. My wife ALWAYS gets the Chicken Tortilla soup. Also make sure to order the Tijuana Spuds!!!!
We had a very large group and they were so kind and accommodating. Server did a good job. Food was delicious and well-priced.
Patio dining party of 6. No waiting although it was busy. The food delicious, everyone was happy with their orders and service was amazing! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
we were looking for tacos and ended up here getting burgers and beers! Sat at the bar, watched sports, flirted with the bartender, ate spuds with yummy sauce. Great lil place for food and drinks and vibes
Really a great spot. Had the Chaka tacos, solid. Loaded spuds were decent. Solid meal and great atmosphere. I'll be back to the Schwack.
Great food! We have had the carnitas nachos and the steak tacos. Both are excellent. Great little bar area to watch the game!! Great beers on tap.
My family really loves this place. Good food, great prices, and everyone is very friendly. The $15 surf n turf is so good I'm getting hungry thinking about it.
Good cantina, order food up front and find your own seating. Features full bar and nice deck seating excellent for lunch or a family dinner. Absolutely A1
I love everything about The Shwack. Food is amazing, service is great and all of the above. I've never had a bad experience. So glad I live less than a minute away!
Went thir for a hamburger and fry's a and got a GREAT service!!!!! Then went thir THE NEXT DAY with my wife and got the Best service we ordered Tijuana papas the BEST!!!!! CANT say enough Good things about the food and the service it's a 10 in my book
The veggie burger is really good! Decent beer selection. Nice to sit at the bar. Low key, casual place.
I highly recommend this place! Great taco Tuesday deal 3 tacos for 6 bucks. They also serve burgers and have yummy home made cookies!
Sweet place! Awesome drink selection, friendly staff, and dog friendly! This place rocks and I will definitely be back for another Jalapeño Margarita.
The food was excellent, fresh and high quality, at very reasonable prices. Attractively decorated inside and outside, with patio dining. Highly recommend!
Good food, different from the location in Dana Point. Different menu, more Mexican food inspired. Food was very good as expected from Shwack because IT'S ALWAYS AWESOME! :)
Great food, fun atmosphere, nice patio. Best albondigas soup around, Shaka tacos & Cantina Steak are super yummy!
Loved the atmosphere. Chill tropical with rad framed art and surfboards. Delicious chicken tortilla soup and great service.
Great place to eat if your trying to get great quality! All of the staff was super friendly and my food came out pretty fast!
Came here with two toddlers and the service was awesome! I never ever take them out to eat because it’s so hectic but the waitress was incredibly attentive, food was great, table and dining area were clean, and I’m definitely coming back again.
Advertised as a Mexican cantina, but has the best hamburgers I have ever tasted in my life! The thick cut potato wedges are a must with any of the burgers too. Good service, good beer. I am a big fan and will be back again. 5 ☆☆☆☆☆
You guys… we love your food… have for the last 5 years. So fresh and hot. When changes are made, For the better, i feel it’s fair to go back and make a review right!! Halen gave us exceptional service and our drinks were refilled and there was follow up!!! Thank you!!!! Thank you Halen for your exceptional service. ERIN GETS 10 STARS!!!!! Exceptional service on a to go order!!!
The food here is always mouth watering good! Friendly service and great atmosphere. I love a double Big Al's burger with Jalepeno ranch and spuds on the side but have had their salads too which I must say are delicious for salads ;)
Healthy, casual, fun, friendly place. Our food was outstanding, fresh, and well seasoned. Not your average burger menu, but so much more. Walk up counter, with family, patio, and bar seating. Must be a local favorite, that we happened upon passing through.
Very comfortable outdoor seating, service is great and food and drinks come out quickly. The shrimp tacos were perfect. Lucy was a fantastic server!
I randomly came here while I was waiting on my car to be detailed. I ordered a Spanich salad with fish. It was DELICIOUS and I had a Peach something for the drink. Waitress was awesome. It doesn't get any better than this.
Everything was delicious - guacamole, chips, salsa, veggie butrito, and pork enchiladas were all a hit. They don't make their own hot sauce which is a little bummer, but the food is so good I can easily overlook this detail. Great service, cool vibe, nice bar.
The food here was delicious! Service was outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive without being overbearing. The chicken poblano with pinto beans was perfect.
Best huevos rancheros I've had in CA. Incredible chocolate chip cookies. Blazing fast service, and you order & pay at the counter before eating which is super efficient. I love their music too - it's always groovy.
Incredible quality and quantity especially for the price! Chile verde was super tasty, even the beans and rice were flavorful. Excellent meal, will be stopping by again and recommending to everyone
Really tasty tacos for their $6 taco Tuesday special. You get 3 tacos with your meal, I just wish you could change out the meats between tacos. Otherwise it was absolutely delicious and the staff was very friendly.
Sooo good! We happened upon this restaurant looking for an open restaurant after church on Easter Sunday! Food comes out quickly! Tastes good! All the kids loved it! We had a party of 17 and everyone was happy with their food!
Great service and food. The burgers and nachos are my favorites. oh, and the margaritas delicious too. Family friendly, outdoor seating and has a full bar. The decor is surfy, artsy.
Best margaritas in town easily!! Our bartender was christian and he was super on point and friendly. Food was delicious too! Chicken verde and the papas highly recommended
I will never understand why the line isn’t out the door every night for this place. Some of the best food I’ve ever had and definitely THE BEST shrimp tacos I have ever had. There is always a friendly staff working and the margaritas aren’t bad at all! But seriously I could eat the shrimp tacos every day.
We’re local aka right up the street and come at least once a week. The staff is super kind and attentive, and the quality of the food is outstanding at affordable prices. Can’t get better than that. Always craving a skinny spicy marg from these guys! The veggie burger is probably the best I’ve had in town.
Two words: fish taco. The absolute best I’ve ever had. Fresh, flaky, perfectly cooked fish plus amazing sauces and tortillas. Had to go back a second time on my trip to Dana Point. Plus, everywhere else is pretty stuffy and this place has a good friendly vibe.
My friend and I love coming here for Taco Tuesday we get the fish and pork tacos. We love the smoked flavor of both and the toppings on it. The homemade cookies are a nice little dessert. Christina is all smiles when we come in and is very friendly and helpful! Love the atmosphere and definitely recommend this place for all ages!
We love Shwack, we can walk here and the food is reasonably priced and tasty. What more can you ask for? I thought it would have a different menu than Shwack in Dana Point, but it is similar with some extras added like the Brisket Sandwich, Shrimp Tacos and a few other things
I really enjoyed my experience at Shwack Cantina. I had a plate of shrimp tacos that were seasoned very well. We enjoyed their chips and guacamole which was EXCELLENT. The potato wedges tasted a little "different", I couldn't put my finger on what it was, they were definitely good but I cannot for the life of me describe the taste. My family enjoyed their taco salads and chicken quesadillas respectively. I encourage anyone to stop by when in town.
Cool spot. I had the house made veggie burger. It was quite appetizing with excellent texture and delicious flavor without trying to be like fake meat at all. The potato wedges were also delightful with a slightly crispy and salty surface. I was satisfied.
Great Service, staff was friendly and attentive. A few different beers in tap, all great from local breweries. Pretty good food too. Chicken enchiladas were tasty. I'd definitely come back.
This was my first visit, but it won't be my last. This area of town is usually more neglected by the crowds during the evenings, so it's probably not too crowded most the time. It wasn't crowded for us, but it wasn't empty. I got some mixed drinks and some beers from the tap which had the typical prices and selections which include some local brews. The dinner I had was really good and they had a good choice of items without making you overwhelmed with too many choices. I should check it out next time during lunch, while my car gets washed from down the street.
First time here - the guys at the Rainbow outlet recommended it. Walk up, order model. They had a cozy looking bar area that would be be a fun place to catch a game. I had the Enchiladas that were stuffed full of meat. 3 sauce choices but I went with the poblano green sauce. Restaurant was super clean and the staff was friendly! I can't wait to go back.
Talk about a great new place to have in San Clemente! The good is GREAT, I highly recommend the tacos, any tacos 🤓. They seem to always have some kind of special going and they have a full service bar inside with bar style seating with an outdoor patio on one side and full restaurant style seating on the other. Great staff as well, always seem friendly with a smile, Shayna that works behind the bar is the best though 👌🏽
Overall, everything was good or great. We had the burger, the crispy chicken sandwich Buffalo style, the pollo a la poblano, and the spuds. The pollo a La poblano was outstanding. The sauce was irresistible. The burger was great. So was the sandwich. Especially the bread. The spuds, however were stale and undercooked. The dish has a lot of potential, but maybe our batch wasn’t fresh. The sauce that came with it was great, though.
Highly recommend the shrimp queso and the nachos. Delicious. House salad was great, and the pork was flavorful. Kids chickadees were dry, and the sauce was too spicy for them. They ate them with sour cream instead. Quick, friendly service even with big parties. The margarita did not have a good flavor, and it was small for the price.
The food and atmosphere are great. I loved almost everything. The chicken meatballs I had were dry and overcooked. Everything else was top shelf.

Fries were fat and good. Tacos a little fishy. No craft beer on happy hour, 2 bottles MX beer to choose on hh. Hamburger is where it's at. Husband says better than a Red Robin. Simple beachy decor.
Really good food. First time visitors so we very were happy with the food and service was friendly. Going back before our trip is over!
Food was good. I had a vegetarian burger (not many vegetarian options, for Taco, the vegetarian option inly has onions and tomatoes). Non vegetarian was fine, as per friends.
Great food. Great service. I would like to be able to choose different kinds of tacos on the 3 tacos plate. They told me I had to have all on them the same. I would think it would benefit them to have people taste the variety and have more reasons to come back. Makes no sense to me.
Great for a lunch with picky eaters... Mexican food as well as burgers. Lose a star since the chips and salsa and the spuds are sometimes terribly overcooked, but sometimes great. Love the steak tacos, and I actually really like the cheap burger.
The food was good, the drinks were good, place was wildly understaffed. Maybe it was because we came in the day after a holiday but the service experience was lacking. We were constantly waiting and it seemed like larger patties we're being served better. Hopefully when we visit in the future it'll be better.
I have no clue if it’s a California/meat price thing, but for tacos, burritos or whatever I had that evening, they noticeably held back on the amount of meat they put in said food compared to VARIOUS local Mexican restaurants throughout Mid-America (from Texas to St. Louis… even the mountain west). Still good food & company though!
Patio is dog friendly, interesting menu options (I love the chili Verde) and drinks include Mexican and a few craft beer options. Casual dining pay as you order. It's a tad funky, and isn't that what you really want? Oh yeah "veggie bites" appetizer rules!
The only reason it’s not a five star is because of the prices. The food was tasty. That burger left a wonderful impression on me! Sadly I got very few fries, that was a bummer
Good food had the ceviche girlfriend had shrimp Verde enchiladas ,she really liked El fuego margarita, cantina service can be described as ordering at the front of restraunt, finding a seat, being served at your table with little staff attention. It was something I wasnt expecting .
Great service, friendly staff, savory tacos with quality steak, food priced very reasonably (taco Tues.), including well drinks; but name mixed drinks priced very high....I would recommend asking for quote first. Fun time overall.
Great spot for happy hour and craft beer. Bartenders are friendly. Prices are fair. Please read the happy hour menu carefully... Kinda misleading in some areas. Kinda counter service, kinda full service. Sometimes the tacos don't come out hot or don't come with the freshest ingredients. Parking lot easy. Also has street parking.
Had some of the best fish tacos I've had in a while here. The sauce on the tacos is delicious and the fish was grilled rather than fried. Plus, if you order "to go" you have some space outside to sit and eat if you choose to in a socially distance environment.
Great lil place to grab a quick meal for friends or family. Good burgers, tacos and salads. The fish plate one of my favorites. Priced reasonably, you order at the counter and food delivered to your table fairly quick. Bar on-site for those tasty adult beverages. Parking lot small but there is street parking. At peak hours wait time will obviously be longer.
Visit this small in the cut nice restaurant customer service was great. Food was great. But I tell you the company I had was not great. There was a young waitress there who seems to be struggling although she has a job. If you feeling more than generous I will tip her more than generous. She goes out her way to make sure that your evening is a really good one her service is impeccable.
Great location, plenty of parking, which is hard to find in San Clemente. I like the outside patio. We tried the kids' chicken fingers, which were very tender. My friend and I shared the brisket sandwich, which was very good. The fries were average. My second visit and I will return.
The food was really delicious! I had the steak salad, and although the meat was thinner, it was juicy and very flavorful! It has a patio that allows dogs, but they don't have a "dog menu". Guacamole was really good and the tacos were tasty and a good portion size, could use just a bit more to make them a little fuller.
We all ordered hamburgers. They were big and juicy. The fries are essentially potato wedges and were crispy. They were served with ranch dressing and ketchup. The waitress was terrific! The food was prepared pretty quickly. We split two fry orders among 4 of us. Very generous servings!

The food didn’t impress. We waited almost 20 minutes for a server to acknowledge that we sat down. We had to go get them. The burritos didn’t have much flavor or sauce. The sauce tasted of chili powder without much of the creamy flavor you usually get with enchilada sauce. It was more like chili powder and water. The rice and beans were bland. The burger was surprisingly the best of the items we ordered. The atmosphere was ok. It is tight in there. Parking is small, so you may have to park along the road. When we finished eating, we also had to go ask for our check after waiting for our server for several minutes again.

Food was decent, it was pretty quiet mid-week for dinner. Dollar off a margarita. Extra charge for chips and salsa on the table. Service was a bit slow but server was friendly.
The food quality was a 4 out a 5... If you like the taste of real Mexican food go somewhere else. I ask for a blended (crushed ice) drink.. I guess their blender broke or ???... The actual drink was fine for medium grade alcohol... The wuhan/covid19 rule for "outside" seating were used, loosely. But that doesn't bother me... I'm clean and healthy for an old guy... Keep in mind everyone who is open for business needs our help and support. At least.. at LEAST spend a little money locally... $$$... And remember," tips to the waitresses are like applause for the band, we both appreciate it!" I know, I know... I'm showing my age.
So just stop by here to grab a bite to eat and take it with us. The half moon fries that they have, were very overcooked. They swack tacos where good, server seemed just a little inexperienced but sweet and got the job done. In a very timely manner the atmosphere seems cool maybe for drinking but don't go here expecting a five-star meal that's for sure.
We go here for lunch during work hours. The buffalo blasters are great, it’s hit or miss if you get the dipping sauce from this place for to go orders. Tacos are great! My favorite are the fish tacos. Steak tacos are enjoyable as well.
they have an enchilada listed as $12 yet charged me 15 because they said the price went up. I think that's just really uncool. When I called the waitress on it all I got was Shrugged shoulders.
Party of 4, they said my food was on it's way. Everyone finished eating. Family said there's was good. I finally got mine, took a bite, it was so cold as if it came out of the Refrigerator. Sent it back & did not give it a second chance.
Service was good. The hostess or cashier whatever was pretty knowledgeable about all their beers. Heavy on the ipas. Guinness is a weird beer to serve at a Mexican restaurant. The food. Well. It sucked. I had the burrito. I got red sauce on it but that was a mistake cuz it tasted like spaghetti sauce with some cayenne pepper mixed in it. The beef inside the burrito was good but it was just like big chunks of beef large whole beans a little cilantro and some mozzarella cheese covered in that tomato sauce stuff. I won't be returning
Food is mediocre. Great bloody Mary's though. The big reason for 2 stars though is the outside dining patio. It's filled with dogs. Not just dogs sitting on the ground under the tables, but ON the tables and chairs begging for food, etc. It's completely gross and unsanitary. For that reason alone I won't return.
They don't take orders for pickup over the phone. Clearly they don't want your business. It goes without saying that ordering online is NOT an alternative to ordering over the phone. Fortunately, there are lots of other restaurants around and they're all happy to take phone orders.
We waited for 20 minutes after being sat at a table tonight and none of the servers would acknowledge us. Everyone around us was also looking around for service. We ended up leaving without ever being served. Never going back.
My wife ordered the chicken enchiladas and they were very spicy. She is currently breast feeding our child and can’t do spicy food. There was one bite out of the enchiladas and she went ask if we could change it out for some tacos. The lady then said “that will cost you”. So my wife felt awkward and we left.
Usually every thing is good but yesterday was the 3rd time I get sick from it. Burger smelled and tasted funky. Rancid. I ate every thing trusting it would be good but at the same time thinking of the other times I've gotten sick.
